10 steps to a perfectly organized home (and life) Clutter. Stuff. Too much stuff, everywhere. In our homes, inside our heads. We strive for a moment of peacefulness because our lives are filled to the brim with things we might or might not need. When you have too much of a good thing you may start to feel bad about the excess or you may even forget what you have. Accumulating, hoarding, piling up. Sometimes it's an innocent thing you just love to shop every now and then - sometimes it becomes a problem. When stuff rules your life, that's when you need to start thinking about organizing and decluttering. We've asked Aby Garvey, organizing and productivity expert at Simplify101, to help us write down 10 basic steps for you to change your life, starting from decluttering. You will learn a thing or two about how you can control clutter in your homes, and as a consequence, organize your lives, too.

10 steps to a perfectly organized home (and life) 1) Purge, purge, purge Before you can actually organize what you've got, make sure you only have what you need and like. In other words: learn how to throw some useless stuff away. If an item doesn't make you feel good, and you don't need it, why keep it? A dress you haven't worn in years. An old pillow. Something that you keep only because you think you have to. In Aby's words: "Don't give it a second thought. Your goal when you're purging (and buying new things for your space) is simple: surround yourself only with things you love — those that make you feel good."
2) Letting go If you're going through the process of getting more organized and “letting-go” of personal belongings, your relationship with “stuff” will likely change, especially if you experience regret over spending money on things you’ve never used or, in your mind, didn’t use “enough.” Use this new relationship with possessions to change how you shop. Remember, every single thing you bring into your home must be dealt with. The less stuff you bring into your home, the less time you spend dealing with your stuff - leaving you with more time for fun.
3) Should I stay or should I go? Here's a wonderful question to ask as you're going through your belongings during an organizing session: "does this item enhance my life?" this question is courtesy of industry guru Don Aslett who was featured on Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood. Aslett went on to say that it's doesn't matter how long you've had something, who gave it to you (pause and realize I'm talking about gifts ... yes, you don't have to keep a gift forever just because it's a gift), or how much it cost ... if it doesn't enhance your life it's clutter. Clutter should go.
4) Getting rid of the "I might need it someday 7) Decluttering, now The moment you enter home, you probably throw some syndrome" Here's a quick fix for the syndrome that causes our homes to look like deposits. You come across something and think “I might need this someday.” Ask yourself, “realistically, *when* will I need this?” If you can’t come up with a definite answer then assign an arbitrary date up to six months out in the future. Put the item in a box, write the date on the outside of the box, and move on. If the “someday” (the date on the box) comes and goes and you haven’t needed the item … you are now free to send it off to a happier place. Ah, doesn’t that feel good?
5) One comes, if one goes Don't bring something into the home, unless something is going out. This is where you make a commitment to purge one item every time you bring a new one into a space: when getting something new, simply get rid of something old. If you buy a new shirt, purge an old one. If you buy a new pair of shoes, donate a worn out pair. And so on. In that way you will not pile up too much of the same thing.
6) Divide and conquer Spring is a perfect moment for you to start a new oranization routine. Begin by dividing your stuff (clothing, cleaning supplies, books etc) in 3 groups: the basics (the ones you use every day), those you only use once in a blue moon and those you never use. Organize the basics. Store those you almost never use. Purge the stuff you never use.
stuff around. Mail, magazines, shoes, handbag. Within just a few days you'll have a LOT of clutter laying around. Instead, take the extra few seconds to put it where it belongs. Putting things back where they go right away is the single best defense against clutter.
8) Fix what's to be fixed What is that one little thing that's been driving you nuts but you've been too busy to do anything about? The one thing that when you fix it you'll reap huge rewards instantly? Sometimes we look for the big bang - a major overhaul of our basement or the big garage clean up. And while these bigger projects are tremendous for creating more calm and order in your home, sometimes we can get even greater reward with a simple little fix.
9) Avoid impulse purchases Keep a wish list in your purse or wallet. When you see something you want (but don't really need) add it to the list. After waiting a week or so, look over your list. Decide if you truly need, love, or have-to-have anything on your list. If so, go get it and enjoy! If not, throw out your list and pat yourself on the back! You just prevented clutter and saved some of your hard earned cash!
10) 3 weeks and you're good to go If you're trying to create change in your life, remember it takes a minimum of 21 days to integrate a new habit into your life. So give yourself the time you need and once you've developed one new healthy habit, add one more.

All in the name of journalism, we have spent 48 hours getting all pampered up trying all the latest beauty treats, getting made up by famous makeup artists and talking about the latest trends in skin care and beauty with the industry gurus, among other hardships, at the biggest beauty event: Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna 2009. For more than 40 years, Cosmoprof has been the world's most important international event in the beauty and cosmetics sector, now also with a special focus
on the spa industry. And Cosmoprof sure surprised us this year. An even bigger, massive area was dedicated to more than 2.200 exhibitors, coming from 60 different countries, each bringing something unique to the picture. Imagine beauty, skin care, make-up, bath & body, organic, hair care and nail care brands all reunited in one big event. Did we die and go to heaven? Cosmoprof 2009 was all about defining excellence, and the various
events, concurrent to the fair, tried to look for and express excellence in diverse areas of the beauty industry. Cosmopack, Perfumery, Nail, CosmoTalk were hosted in freshly designed spaces and set-ups. But the 2009 edition was not only revamped with a new look: it had three aces up its sleeve. Establishing itself as a true trendsetter, it created COSMOff Lab to discuss and present new looks. It dwelled in the depths of the wellbeing world with Cosmoprof Spa.

COSMOFF Lab / FUTURE GUIDELINES Cosmoprof, as the absolute beauty context, caters for visitors and exhibitors requirements by becoming a “creator of contents” and launching the “COSMoff LAB”, to find out, anticipate and present trends of the future, by laying down the “new trends guide” through workshops and seminars. The culture of beauty partnered with
the taste for beauty to play the starring roles at the 42nd edition of Cosmoprof 2009, heralded by a fully-fledged Workshop for Inspiration being organised inside a truly visionary space - providing the glamorous setting for four evocative days of trends, markets, colours, fashion and current affairs. The Workshop for Inspiration has been the 360° all-round vantage point at Cosmoprof: this is where our gaze was drawn irresistibly, taking in the world at a glance, capturing the
particular moment when we each play our own part in its development, in new trends, the media… Five topical areas and five colours groupings in a full agenda of meetings and events in a workshop packed with excitement (as sessions reserved for professional operators alternate with open-door events) were the subtle leitmotiv accompanying the entire fair in 2009. This is where Cosmoprof also presented a preview of a limitededition Book for experts in the field.

Perfumery is changing and for the 2009 edition Cosmoprof has redrawn some of its itineraries, after analysing the international and Italian markets, so that visitors were able to find areas with shared characteristics and target them directly. Masterpieces (The Quintessence of Perfumery): an area that housed artistic perfumery and products dedicated to end consumers who are always on the lookout for something personal, private and unique. Black Label (Niche Perfumes): a new
trend related to niche brands that have strong personalities and recognisable connotations. Golden Label (Prestige Perfumes): perfumery collections available at the distribution channels of independent perfume shops or buying groups that are known worldwide. NBZ HIGHLIGHT At Masterpieces Rubino Cosmetics presented "Shock", the first ever molecule-based fragrance that directly effects the mind once it's smelled: the
exclusive formulation physically causes an immediate "awakening" of the mind. Following extensive research in the field, Rubino Cosemetics discovered a molecule that, by smelling it, infiltrates the mucosa of the nostrils and awakes the mind as a cup of coffee would. The scent is very, very pleasant and refreshing. Lemon, grapefruit, mandarine and marine head notes are sweetened by a violet and white flowers heart, closed by white musck and timber sweet. The beauty sector of Cosmoprof was celebrating the “taking your time” philosophy of wellness, both inside and out: beauty of body and beauty of soul. Cosmoprof Spa, a special area dedicated to spas and beauty, was also launched this year inside the Beauty sector. In what is considered the new temple of beauty, the display spaces have been reorganised on the basis of concepts and thematic areas, so as to offer visitors customised user itineraries. In the very centre of the brand-new “Spa Concept” pavillion an area dedicated to
installing spa models devised by some of the most celebrated architects in the field, was launched. Enormous emphasis has been placed on the halls’ logistics, so as to make it very simple for visitors to find the areas dedicated to equipment and instruments, with all their new products launches, to cosmetic products and treatments, to design and architecture, to accessories and to technical design features.
NBZ HIGHLIGHTS The Tribu-te Show inspired us all with the top of international coiffure: Angelo Seminara and Trevor Sorbie, Mark Hayes for Vidal Sassoon, Jean-Luc Minetti for Alexandre de Paris, Tim Hartley and Robert Cromeans.
HAIR Meeting Point for the great international hairdressing stars, once again this year, Cosmoprof devotes plenty of space to hair styling. NAIL More space for nail and hand care: a sector that’s growing at Cosmoprof and all over the world. Cazcarra is first of all a make-up school, and the quality of their curses is visible in
the Academy Award Winner movie "El laberinto del fauno", that won Best Make Up in 2007. Remember the scary yet fascinating creatures that were in the movie? Well, the make-up artist David MartĂ attended classes at Cazcarra School, thus showing what kind of knowledge one gets in this school.

What we've loved\6 Finally, a special mention goes to Pascal, not a simple make-up artist but a Maestro of beauty. He comes from the same town as Leonard da Vinci, and with him he shares his same passion for knowledge and the research of beauty. Pascal launched his latest makeup line called Moonlight at Cosmoprof: each product in the line (bronzer, eyeshadow palette, lipgloss and lipstick) come with its own LED light and mirror to simplify application in dark places, plus a special
vibrating mascara that mimics the expert touch of a makeup artist when s/he is applying mascara on a client's lashes. All his products have natural ingredients that actually benefit the skin.

Cosmoprof prooved once again to be the place to be, when it comes to beauty. This year though we've noticed a strong shift from pure easthetics to beauty that makes us feel good. As Jean Runel, Murad International Vice President pointed out, last month (March 2009) was the best performing month, ever, when it comes to Murad products. This means that eventhough (or because of) the economic crisis, people all over the world are willing to spend their money on "feel good" items that will give them personal satisfactions when the
outside world seems to be going bad. In our eyes, this also means that beauty creators, and "beauty addicts" as well, are incurable optimists and want to make this world a more beautiful place, starting from themselves and how they feel.

Hello Ashley, tell us when and how did you first realize that you wanted to become an artist? I've always drawn from the time I could pick up a pencil. When I was a kid I KNEW that's what I wanted to be but around junior high and high school I realized that probably was not going to happen. It just wasn't practical. Flash forward to my early twenties and blogs and the internet and the possibility of drawing for a living once again became a possibility, and then a reality.
Did your parents and teachers encourage you to express yourself artistically as a child? My mom worked at a hospital as a unit clerk and she brought home boxes and boxes of used printer paper, and I drew on the other side. She would tell people I was going to be an artist. So yes, I felt VERY encouraged to do whatever I was passionate about.

Are there any artists, past and present, or styles, that inspire you or that you feel connected to? So many: I love Schiele; Julie Verhoeven has a fantastic style that I think is very popular to mimic, and she was the first to make me realize in my adolescence that yes, drawing was a possibility; I love Nara and Camilla Engman and so many illustrators and painters and pattern makers who I see daily on the internet. Unfortunately, the names fall out of my head almost as soon as they enter.
instantly make me feel hyper-creative and prolific. I still draw sitting outside or by an open window a great deal of the time. The smell of brewing coffee just makes me crave creative projects. I used to get that feeling in my third and fifth grade classrooms, which is why I thought teaching may have been a good alternative for me.
How do you come up with the imagery you use? Usually just sketching turns into something workable. I tend not to use photo references, but when I do I Tell us about your other influences or certainly create different work. I've had that lap desk since I was about 15. Which wins, in your world? Both. My first love is paper drawing but I usually don't like my own work Any tips or tricks for aspiring artists so having it one step removed out there?
