Wine therapy for the skin Scientists have long known wine is good for your heart, but recent research reveals an ingredient in wine, Resveratrol, to be an excellent wrinkle fighter as well. Recent studies have shown that there are properties found in wine, specifically in the red wines, that are good for our skin. The antioxidants that are found in the grapes can have a wonderful healing effect on the skin by countering the damage that free radicals in our environment can cause. Resveratrol a potent antioxidant produced naturally by grape skins and stems, has been revealed to have anti-aging and antiinflammatory effects. And proanthocyanidins, found in the skins and seeds of the grapes, removes harmful free oxygen radicals from the cells. If you need a dose of daily antioxidants to fight the signs of aging and free radicals, using skincare and anti-aging products that are grape-based or contain grapes as a main ingredient is what's right for you. The products you use everyday, those little helpers that make your life much easier and your beauty routine more pleasant - how were they born? Instead of giving for granted their existence, it's interesting to discover what brought them to life, and how much work is behind the birth of a unique beauty tool. This month we chat with the inventors of 2 of the products that made our very own "best of 2008" list of beauty essentials: Michelle Savage creator of Savvylash and Shawna Ellsworth creator of the Tassi. Little, BIG Ideas
Tell our readers how Savvylash was born, what triggered the idea for such a unique beauty tool? The story of Savvylash is something of a labour of love; it was invented by myself, a self-confessed beauty addict who gained a British City & Guilds qualification in Beauty Therapy whilst holding down a full time administration position for Greater Manchester Police, England, UK! For many years I applied mascara and then used a pin (not very safe and probably not that hygienic!) to separate my lashes trying to recreate the Models' lashes on TV and in magazines. When I started doing beauty therapy and talking to colleagues, friends and clients, it was obvious that I wasn't the only one using makeshift items from around the house, so I decided to do my own market research. My findings were that women wanted to achieve the 'lash perfection' look we are seduced by - but in reality, mascara can be difficult to apply and lashes sticking together are inevitable. People were using pins, (I believe - more recently by Julia Roberts in the film Charlie Wilson's War), sewing needles, toothpicks, cotton buds, scissors, tweezers, fingernails, crochet needle and the most bizarre one was teaspoons! When did you realize Savvylash was unique, that a similar one didn't exist? I tried the mini comb on a stick (you get with your make-up brushes) but it simply didn't work, it removed mascara in one way and caused clumping in another!! I searched extensively on the Internet for tool I could buy in order to individually separate my lashes, but was amazed to discover that one DIDN'T EXIST anywhere in the world!!! - I decided there was only one thing for it: Design one myself.. How did you know Savvylash possessed a basic component for the beauty industry - marketability? I relied on my market research and wanted to produced slick and contemporary packaging for Savvylash, giving it a strong visual look, which will appeal to a wide range of customers. I also realised that the 'cosmetic houses' were spending millions on mascara wand technology - in order achieve the perfect lash look - it seemed to be a race to find the 'HOLY GRAIL FOR PERFECT LASHES'..BUT. eyelashes are like fingerprints - they are individual to the person- long, short, curly, straight, thick and thin - therefore no single mascara wand will work for all. However, Savvylash will work with ANY mascara product in order to individually separate the lashes, giving a clump free but luscious lash volume look. Savvylash retails at ÂŁ4.99, which I believe is an affordable investment for any make-up kit.

Little, BIG Ideas
How long did it take to bring Savvylash from the idea/concept status, to the final, successful product we see today? After years of using the pin, I had the idea in January 2004, I thought long and hard about it first and the possible pit falls ahead, as the 'business world, was new to me. However, I had this 'gut feeling' to follow my instinct. So I decided to go and see a reputable 'patent agent' in Manchester, UK and he commenced the initial searches- just to establish as to whether or not there was a patent for an eyelash separator cosmetic product in the process. Once the searches came back negative - I started the patent procedure. The application date was 11th march 2004 however the process takes a long time, in 2006 I was advised that I could virtually guarantee the patent to be granted and that is when I started looking at the Savvylash name, design, packaging etc. In June 2007 I received the granted patent, Savvylash is also Trademark and has the patent for product design in other countries - I also have insurance to cover legal costs in order to protect my 'Intellectual Property Rights' should anyone copy the design without permission!
Where do you see Savvylash in the next 3-5 years? That's a good question - ideally I'd like to see it in the make-up bags/ kits of all make-up artists, beauty therapists and the general public.that would be a good start!! It would be great to work along side a big cosmetic house - MAC - for example - a collaboration would be a dream come true. I do charity work for 'Look Good Feel Better' based at Christies Cancer Hospital in Manchester, UK and It would be great to introduce a limited edition 'pink colour' for the charity. Also, I would like to have a Savvylash brand of products for sale on the internet and not necessarily the obvious choices. As I own the intellectual property rights who knows, I may license my product.
Are you working on any new projects for the future? Yes, my mind is always working on ideas and sketches, I do have a few ideas for additional products, but my concentration at the moment is to expose and establish Savvylash firmly within the beauty industry. For example with Christmas approaching it would be an ideal 'stocking filler' for anyone who uses mascara!

Little, BIG Ideas
How was the Tassi born-what triggered the idea? Many years ago my Aunt Dot came up with a similar idea to help her 3 teenage daughters keep their long hair out of their face and off their necks so they could wash their face, bathe, etc. It was just a simple thing they used in their home. I happened to get one of these hairwraps and used it for years whether my hair was long, short, curly or straight. I loved it and couldn't wash my face without it. If I couldn't find it or forgot it on a trip, it drove me crazy to try and wash my face and brush my teeth. One day I realized if I loved this so much and needed it so much-I knew that other women would as well. I worked and developed the product into what it now is and we eventually even got a patent. It is so easy to use. It eliminates the hair frustrations with skin care. It is comfortable and doesn't mess up or damage your hair. After getting the patent, I started having friends and family try them. Women became addicted and even passionate about them-it made life just a little bit easier. I started selling them from my home in Arizona. Women would come and buy 6 or 12 to give to friends and family. We struggled trying to come up with a name. It seemed like anything that we could think of was already taken or sounded silly. We eventually kind of made up the name Tassi. We had heard of it for a first name, last name and even a dessert. After naming the hairwrap a Tassi, we learned that a form of the word Tassi in old or middle French means "little pocket or little pouch". It was perfect! When did you realize the Tassi was unique, that a similar one didn't exist? I kept my eyes open all of the time-looking to see if there was any thing like it already out there. I didn't see anything. Of course, there are headbands, but they flatten your hair and don't hold the back and sides of your hair. So if you lean forward-so does your hair. With the Tassi you no longer have to worry about getting your hair wet or some kind of product in your hair. I personally think that the great thing about a Tassi is how it goes on-so easy and it holds all of a woman's hair. Women use the Tassi for all kinds of things-washing your face, putting on makeup, taking of makeup, masks, facials, waxings, plucking, showering, bathing, tanning, excercising or just any time they need to keep their hair out of their face-even painting, cleaning or morning sickness. We have heard everything. We went to our first tradeshow in July 2007. It was the Cosmoprof North America show in Las Vegas. We had no idea what we were doing, but we wanted to see what reaction we got and find out if there really was anything like our Tassi. We were blown away by the response we got. Women loved it! We knew we had to move forward.
Shawna Ellsworth
Little, BIG Ideas
How did you know Tassi possessed the basic component for the beauty industry-marketability? I just always felt that every woman needs a Tassi. We do a lot of things with and to our face. Hair is always a problem-no matter the length or style or age of the woman. Tassi solves a problem that all women have. Even for young women-when girls are just starting to wash and take care of their skin-if it isn't easy, they won't do it. I wanted the branding to be young and fun! A real turning point for me was when, all of a sudden, I started getting a lot of trendy teens and "twenty somethings" coming and telling me how much they love the Tassi and can't live without it. Then I knew I had something. How long did it take to bring Tassi from the idea/concept status, to thefinal, successful product we see today? I think I have literally been thinking about this for 20 years or longer. However, it was only an idea. It was always in the back of my mind and there were spurts of time where I would really think about it and work on developing the idea. But I was busy being a mom to our 5 children and just busy with life. Now that most of our children are gone-we still have a 14 year old daughter at home-it was the right time. Where do you see Tassi in the next 3-5 years? I think every woman needs a Tassi. I hope Tassi will change the "face" of the world, one woman at a time. Are you working on any new projects? We do have some fun Tassi projects in the planning stages. Surprises.

one last page before you go My Sorrow, when she's here with me, Thinks these dark days of autumn rain Are beautiful as days can be; She loves the bare, the withered tree; She walks the sodden pasture lane. Her pleasure will not let me stay. She talks and I am fain to list: She's glad the birds are gone away, She's glad her simple worsted gray Is silver now with clinging mist. The desolate, deserted trees, The faded earth, the heavy sky, The beauties she so truly sees, She thinks I have no eye for these, And vexes me for reason why. Not yesterday I learned to know The love of bare November days Before the coming of the snow, But it were vain to tell her so, And they are better for her praise.
