Dear Community Members, Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year! The theme of the Adult and Community Education fall catalog is “Change is Good,” and I can’t think of a more fitting sentiment as we embark on another school year. We are always growing and changing in Northside, but we remain committed to serving the educational needs of our students and families. To accommodate our steadily growing enrollment, NISD opened two new schools this year: Bonnie Ellison Elementary School and Dr. Joe Bernal Middle School. We are expected to have an enrollment of over 103,000 for the 2014-15 school year. Northside continues to be the “destination district,” and our growth is a testament to the quality of our schools and extracurricular programs. I also want to express my appreciation to all the members of the community who supported School Bond 2014 last May. Thanks to the passage of the bond issue, Northside has funding for six new schools as well as renovations and expansions at existing schools. In Northside, we recognize that learning is a lifelong process, and that’s why our Adult & Community Education Department provides such beneficial programs to all our community members, no matter your age. It’s never too late to grow, change, and learn new skills and hobbies. I encourage you to take a few moments to look through this course catalog to find something to meet your needs. Courses are offered at locations throughout the District, and I promise you there is something here for everyone, at a convenient time and place. For more information, please visit the Adult & Community Education website at www.nisd.net/ace. I wish everyone the best of luck for the 2014-2015 school year. Sincerely,
Brian T. Woods, Ed.D. Superintendent

A new class due to the many requests we have received. We won’t be able to see everything in this charming city, but we will visit two of the most famous and interesting ones. Texas State Aquarium offers visitors a chance to get up close and personal with hundreds of the Gulf of Mexico’s inhabitants. Over 300 species are represented at the aquarium which also serves as a rehabilitation facility for marine animals and shore birds. After lunch at Water Street Seafood Company (on your own!), we’ll visit the USS Lexington. Not since the Battle of the Philippine Seas has the ship come to life like this. New Virtual Battle Stations are a truly interactive experience that will thrust you into the chaos and grit that was WWII. Price includes the bus and specially priced admittance tickets to the Aquarium and the USS Lexington. The step ladders are very steep and the spaces are small so some people may not be able to navigate the ship easily. No children allowed, sorry. Bring your cooler with a few snacks and beverages since we won’t be able to take long stops due to the length of the drive. We’re going again to the Fredericksburg Theater for a delightful comedy in this theater that has no bad seats. We’ll travel in a new coach bus to Fredericksburg to do a little shopping and dining (on your own) and get back on the bus for the ride to the nearby theater. This price includes the bus and your group ticket to the play. BLITHE SPIRIT, written by theater-great Noel Coward, mixes high society and seances for a grand concoction of laughs and lunacy. The smash comedy hit of the London and Broadway stages, this muchrevived classic offers up fussy, cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine, re-married but haunted (literally) by the ghost of his late first wife, the clever and insistent Elvira who is called up by a visiting “happy medium”, one Madame Arcati. As the (worldly and un-) personalities clash, Charles’ current wife Ruth is accidentally killed, (passes over), joins Elvira and the two “blithe spirits” haunt the hapless Charles into perpetuity. Join us for a beautiful day and a fun evening. Instructor: Mora Tuition $62 Sat 1 session 2:00pm-11:00pm 11/1 Northside Activity Ctr Parking Lot

Czech pioneers built the nationally-recognized painted churches of Ammannsville, Dubine, High Hill, and Praha. They were experts at the artistry and handiwork of 19th century Europe. All seven churches contain ornate altars, intricately painted columns, elevated ceiling arches covered with complex designs, and stained glass windows. We will visit four of them, accompanied by a knowledgeable docent who will explain the unique features of each church, as well as much of the history surrounding this unique area. For those of you who have not visited the Painted Churches, this has been one of our most popular tours. We’ll take breaks along the way and stop for a buffet lunch (on your own-abut $12) in Schulenburg while touring the churches. The tour fee is included in your tuition price.
