DRAWING & PAINTING CANVAS KIDS (AGES 6-12) YART116 Young artists will have a blast painting animals, still life and landscapes using a step-by-step method. Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to paint on large and small canvases. Instructors will cover basic color theory and fun techniques that can be used to produce magnificent paintings every time. Your little artist will produce at least one large painting and one mini canvas with easel as well as various sizes in between. DRAWING TECHNIQUES (AGES 8-12) YART151 Learn tips and techniques from an artist and draw like a pro! First learn to see, then learn to draw. Students have fun warming up with a variety of challenging exercises designed to help them identify value, proportions, and composition. They will draw from life and work with other resource materials. Students will create compositions with impact using the weight of line, observation, value, and tone. CREATIVE CARTOONING (AGES 6-12) YART161 Ready to have some fun learning about the tricks of famous cartoonists? Kids will be guided through the steps to produce a variety of cartoon drawings. Be ready to brainstorm as we create our own original characters. Students will produce a 3-panel comic strip and learn to do word bubbles, inking and other elements of interest. Participants will also enjoy making various hand-made animation devices such as flip books and an animation wheel. They will learn about optical illusions and how cartoon movies work. A cash materials fee of $20 is payable to the instructor on the first day of camp.

CARTOON ADVENTURES IN SPACE (AGES 6-12) YART146 Join Young Rembrandts as we travel to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in our Cartoon Adventures in Space workshop. Futuristic scenes of otherworldly adventures highlight the spectacular drawings our students will produce. We will join our own colorful cast of cartoon characters, like Sketch the mouse, Shade the cat and Dave the elephant. Not only will our students learn how to illustrate science fiction-inspired characters and moments, but they will also strengthen their drawing and coloring skills. From astronauts in jetpacks to out-of-this-world alien life forms, our students will learn how to compose well-drawn cartoon figures in dynamic poses. Get ready for five days of exciting, intergalactic imagery! All materials included in the camp fee.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM (AGES 6-12) YART159 Enter our Art Studio where you will be inspired by the movie “Night at The Museum”. You never know what will come to life as we explore artifacts such as dinosaurs, Egyptian treasures, miniature cowboys, Romans and even some amazing animals on display. Artists will work in chalk pastel, watercolor, acrylics on canvas and some cartooning. This will definitely be a camp to remember! PAINTED PETS (AGES 6-12) YART160 What does your pet do all day when you aren’t at home? What do they think about? Have fun brainstorming with a fun cartoon drawing depicting their hilarious behavior. Don’t have a pet? No worries! We will have fun with creatures as small as a mouse, as big as a dinosaur or anything in between. Create works of art using watercolor, acrylic, and pastel. This is a fun class that will fine tune artistic skills in every animal-loving artist! LANGUAGE SPANISH AT HOME, AT THE ZOO, AND WITH FRIENDS (AGES 5-8) YLAN105 Learn Spanish through music, games, motion, and fun through the themes of famous books such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear; The Very Hungry Caterpillar; and The Color Monster. Learn to speak about colors, animals, foods, days of the week, opposites, emotions, and more. This class is taught according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages guidelines, and portions are taught in Spanish immersion. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required.

SPANISH IMMERSION SPORTS CAMP (AGES 8-12) YLAN103 Play sports WHILE learning the Spanish language and culture!! This camp is an awesome mix of Spanish, sports in Hispanic cultures, and play! The camp leader will be a Spanish speaker and will teach the campers basic Spanish conversational pieces/phrases incorporated with competing in various sports and games. SPANISH THROUGH HISPANIC COUNTRIES CULTURAL TRIP (AGES 8-12) YLAN104 Learn Spanish while visiting Hispanic countries of the world. Spend each day learning Spanish in the context of historical monuments, cuisine, art, music, and festivals. Visit Mexico, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Argentina. This class is taught according to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages guidelines, and portions are taught in Spanish immersion. No previous knowledge of Spanish is required.

DDS SUMMER TRACK AND FIELD (AGES 6-18) YSCN178 Summer is the best time for students from age 6-18 to get into track and field, gain new friendships, and compete in races against other teams. Participants will join a track and field team which practices 3 days a week. Athletes will learn proper running form and technique for various events such as hurdles, shot put and long jump. These skills will be developed throughout the season so that athletes can continue to improve while getting stronger and faster. Skills learned in Track and Field translate into other sports such as football, baseball, and soccer. Competitions begin in May and run through July.

CHESS CAMP (AGES 5-17) YSNF121 This summer, Complete Chess will offer a series of five-day chess camps for children of all grade levels and chess skill sets. THE BLOC’S CROCS SUMMER LEAGUE (AGES 6-18) AQA105 This is a great opportunity for students from age 6-18 to get into the pool, learn swimming skills, spend time with friends, and compete in races against other teams. The four racing strokes will be taught and developed throughout the season so that athletes can continue to improve, and get faster. There will be five competitions in June and the first two weeks of July. Athletes must tryout on May 12th and demonstrate that they are not afraid of the water. The Northside Community Education Department is a part of the District and consequently we follow district policies, goals and objectives. Our youth programs provide enrichment activities, enhanced self-motivation, social skills, and safety. By registering for NISD Community Education Youth Programs, you agree to the following Community Education guidelines for parents and guardians. YOUTH PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS The program expects that parents will: Keep the child’s application form up-to-date; follow set attendance and pick-up policies; pay close attention to any communications from the Instructor or Community Education Coordinator regarding their child’s behavior and cooperate in efforts to improve the situation. ACRYLIC PAINTING LEVEL 2: FUNDAMENTALS ART105 Master the fundamentals of acrylic painting as you explore principles and theory of color mixing, color schemes, and warm and cool primaries. Learn about value, compliments, triad, analogous and monochromatic hues, the color wheel, how to lay out your palette and keep order while you work. Beginning students learn the art of lapidary, cutting and polishing gemstones that can be used to make beautiful jewelry. CHINESE MANDARIN LAN102 A beginning class in Conversational Chinese using Mandarin, the national standard language in China, required in government, education, military, and business. There are 142 dialects in China, and this experienced teacher will teach you not only the basics of the single standard one (Mandarin), but also introduce you to some basic written characters, both numbers and vocabulary, that are common to all. At the end of the class you will be able to properly pronounce several hundred words and converse about health, time, weather and money, count to 1,000, and read and write numbers 1 through 9,999. CHI GONG EXERCISE (I CHIN CHING) HAW112 I Chin Ching or Yijin jing roughly translates to the “change of tendon and muscle.” The idea is that by tensing your muscles through static holds/stretches and dynamic motions you can build stronger, more flexible muscles and tendons, while achieving better balance and coordination. TAI CHI FOUNDATIONS HAW132 This weekly class is designed primarily for complete beginners, but is also a streamlined way for experienced practitioners to practice the meditative movements of Tai Chi without the overhead of learning new long forms. Tai Chi Foundations focuses on loosening the joints, releasing tension, guided meditations, breathing, chi kung (qigong), and short segments of Tai Chi movements that can be learned and practiced in a single class. CHI GONG EXERCISE (I CHIN CHING) HAW112 I Chin Ching or Yijin jing roughly translates to the “change of tendon and muscle.” The idea is that by tensing your muscles through static holds/stretches and dynamic motions you can build stronger, more flexible muscles and tendons, while achieving better balance and coordination. That’s a lot of promise for just 49 exercises! Many of the Qi Gong exercises are similar to yoga postures and these can be done by anyone. TAI CHI FOUNDATIONS HAW132 This weekly class is designed primarily for complete beginners, but is also a streamlined way for experienced practitioners to practice the meditative movements of Tai Chi without the overhead of learning new long forms. Tai Chi Foundations focuses on loosening the joints, releasing tension, guided meditations, breathing, chi kung (qigong), and short segments of Tai Chi movements that can be learned and practiced in a single class. This will provide all the basic building blocks of a Tai Chi practice. From here, if desired, students can move on to working through the expansive Shaolin-Do Tai Chi Chuan curriculum.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES 1. GENERAL INFORMATION Northside ISD Adult & Community Education offers non-credit classes to all members of the community for personal enrichment and professional development. You do not have to be a resident of Northside School District to take our classes. 2. ADULT CLASSES Our classes are designed for attendees 16 years and older. Youth 15 years and under may enroll into a class with permission of the program coodinator and instructor. Enrolled youth must be accompanied by a paying adult in the same program. Children may not accompany adults to class and we do not provide child care. 3. YOUTH CLASSES Please adhere to listed age requirements in program description. Unless designated as a “Parent & Me” class, parents will be expected to leave the classroom once class starts. All instructors are background checked and we adhere to strict safety policies. All youth camps and classes require completion of a Youth Waiver/Information Form to participate in programs. The form must be signed and submitted to registration office prior to class attendance. You may obtain a copy of the Youth Waiver/Information Form by visiting our office or by downloading at www.nisd.net/ ace. Before participating in youth programs, parents and guardians should review the Parent Handbook also available in our office or by downloading at www.nisd.net/ace. 4. REGISTRATION You may register for classes online, by phone, by mail or in person. All classes, including free classes, require pre-registration. Many classes fill up so register early to avoid disappointment. If space is available, registrations are taken until the first day of the class. Early registrations are encouraged to avoid class cancellations due to low enrollment. Registration for some cooking and crafting classes may close two business days before class time to allow instructors to purchase supplies for class.

5. FEES & PAY TYPES Financial support for our program comes from class fees. Tuition fees are due at registration. Visa and Mastercard can be used to pay for class online, by phone, by mail and in person. We can also accept cash and check payments in our office. Returned Checks: A $25 fee will be charged for each returned check. 6. MATERIALS FEES Some classes have a materials fee which is payable to the instructor in the first class. MATERIAL FEES ARE EXACT CASH ONLY This fee is noted in the class description and is in addition to the class fee paid upon registration. Some classes may require students to bring supplies; refer to class description. 7. REFUND POLICY Refunds minus a $6 processing fee will be given if requested at least 2 business days before the day of the first class meeting. Local tours must be cancelled at least 5 business days before the event. After that time, no refunds can be given. Refund requests must be made by calling our office at 397-8100 (option 2). We cannot process refund requests by email. Instructors are not authorized to approve requests for refunds.

NO REFUNDS WILL BE ISSUED IF YOU FAIL TO ATTEND CLASS Refunds for payments made by credit card will be processed to same card used and may take 2-3 business days for processing. Refunds for cash and check payments will be made by check and will take 4 to 6 weeks for processing. 8. CANCELLATIONS If we cancel a class, you will be offered the choice of an alternative class, electronic escrow (account credit), or full refund. 9. CONFIRMATION If you provide an email address at registration, class confirmation will be emailed to you. A class reminder will be sent via email 24-48 hours prior to class, but students are expected to manage their class registrations and schedules.

10. CLASS LOCATIONS We may change room assignments due to class size or requirements. Please refer to the Campus Supervisor, classroom signs (on or near door), or television monitor (NLC Campus only) for final room assignment. 11. WAITING LISTS Waiting lists are available for classes that reach capacity. Should space become available, students will be contacted in order they appear on the list. Instructors are not authorized to approve requests for admittance to class if a waiting list is in place. 12. POLICIES Northside Independent School District offers classes to the public for purpose of information, instruction, enlightenment, and example ONLY. Such classes are NOT to be construed as endorsement from the individual instructor, his/her company, or Northside School District. We urge all students to conduct their own research into subjects and courses of study. We make no guarantees, expressed or implied, that classroom instruction will result in a specific gain. We cannot be held responsible for any loss, material or otherwise, incurred while following a teacher’s directions. We are not responsible for any personal property left in our buildings. Students take courses at their own risk. Neither the Northside ISD nor any of its instructors is liable for any injury you may sustain. The Learning Tree After School program provides a safe and positive environment for children while parents are still at work. Youth leaders engage students in enriching activities, homework help, and recreation. Enrichment activities are guided by Problem Based Learning principles. Lessons adhere to the same standards teachers use, The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). The General Educational Development Diploma, also called the High School Equivalency Certificate in Texas, provides proof of the completion of an alternative high school education.
