about niseko

Niseko is a district at the base of Mt. Yotei that includes Hirafu, Kutchan, Niseko and Rankoshi. Originally named by Hokkaido's native Ainu people, the word Niseko means gorge or ravine.

Niseko is characterised by four distinct seasons. Winter is the most popular season, primarily due to Niseko's heavy annual falls of powder snow. Each season the area averages over 14 metres in total snow depth. Niseko resort, located at the base of Mount An'nupuri, consists of three interlinked ski resorts called Niseko United – Niseko An'nupuri, Niseko Village and Niseko Grand Hirafu including Hanazono. Niseko Grand Hirafu is the largest of the resorts with a wide range of accommodation, restaurants, bars and snow sports services.

In spring, summer and autumn, Niseko is a natural wonderland where visitors can relax and enjoy a wide variety of activities including rafting, golf, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, fruit picking and more.

The Shiribetsu River plays host to a wide variety of water activities including white water rafting, fishing, canyoning and canoeing. Visiting the various local festivals, getting fresh produce from local farms and fishing ports are also popular activities.

Winter Season Aside from skiing there are many on and off-snow activities available.

These include Japanese cultural experiences such as calligraphy, tea ceremonies, snowmobiling, and backcountry guiding, snowshoeing and day tours to nearby historical locations.

ニセコについて

ニセコとは北海道後志管内にある、ニセコ町、倶知安町、蘭越町な どをまたぐ地域の総称である。" ニセコ " という地名はアイヌ語のニ セイコ（渓谷、峡谷）が起源。

While the use of credit cards is spreading amongst the Japanese, cash is still the preferred method of payment at most shops and restaurants, even in Niseko.

Extremely popular, during summer there are so many people lining up to fill their tanks with fresh Yotei water that at times it's almost impossible to find a parking space. Fresh filtered Mt. Yotei spring water flows out of the ground all year round. Hukidashi Park, Yusui No Sato, Niseko Grand Hotel are favorite destinations for tourists.

湧水

羊蹄山の周りには湧水の名所がたくさんあります。ペットボトルやポリタ ンクを片手に天然の名水を汲みにくる観光客で賑わっています。一年を 通し、羊蹄山の大自然のフィルターから染み出る水はとてもまろやかで す。京極町ふきだし公園、真狩村湧水の里、ニセコ甘露泉の水汲み場は 観光地としても有名です。

Kutchan is the nearest major town to the Niseko resort and has a population of approximately 15,000. Sister City of St. Moritz, Kutchan has a long history as a ski town. Primarily a farming district, potatoes are the primary product. The town's mascot is a combination of these two – a skiing potato named Jagata-kun.

倶知安について

別名、蝦夷富士（えぞふじ）とも称される羊蹄山を北方に望む倶 知安町。独特の地名の由来はアイヌ語の " クッ・シャン・イ "（ 管 のようなところを流れ出る場所）と言われています。人口は約 15000 人と小さな町ですが、日本でも屈指のスキーリゾート、ニセ コに近いことから知名度を高めています。倶知安町は北海道でも 有数のじゃがいもの産地。でん粉を主成分として作られる「豪雪う どん」など、名産のじゃがいもを使用した菓子や商品などが町の いたるところで販売されています。羊蹄山・じゃがいも・豪雪は倶 知安町の三大シンボルとも言えましょう。羊蹄山をイメージする帽 子をかぶり、スキーを履いたじゃがいも「じゃが太くん」は、倶知 安町のマスコットキャラクターとして全道各地、時には全国各地を まわり倶知安町の素晴らしさを伝えています。

Ku tchan is co nve ni e nt f o r sh o p p in g . Ku tchan's maj o r supermarkets are "Co-op", "MaxValu" and "Lucky". "Co-op" is located next to the train station and bus stop. "MaxValu" and "Lucky" are located along the Route 5. Right next door of "MaxValu" you'll find Drugstore "Tsuruha", 100 yen shop "Daiso" and hardware store "Homac". Farmer's Markets like "Kutchan Marche, Yukidaruma", "Sanjoichiba" and "Hokkaido Umaimono Noen" are also popular among locals during summer for fresh fruit, vegetables and other produce.

倶知安町は小さいながらもお買い物に便利な町です。スーパーマー ケットはＪＲ倶知安駅に近接するコープ倶知安店、国道５号線沿い のラッキーやマックスバリューなどがあります。マックスバリューに はホームセンターやドラッグストア、飲食店などが隣接しています ので、その他の買い物も同時に済ませることができます。 また北海道ならではの新鮮な魚が手に入る魚屋さんや、採れたて の地元産野菜の直売所など、個性豊かなお店がたくさんあります。

Kutchan Kosei Hospital is the main hospital. The hospital clinic hours are 8am to 5pm on weekdays. In an emergency you can call 0136 22 1141, however after clinic hours, the hospital accepts only serious case patients carried by an ambulance. In this case, the patients need to be hospitalised after treatment as a hospital rule.

洞爺湖ロングラン花火大会

TOYAKO LONG RUN FIRE WORK FESTIVAL

4 月 28 日から 10 月 31 日の 187 日、毎晩 8：45 から 20 分程度洞爺湖の空に花火が舞い上がります。湖上を移動 しながら打ち上げられ、より迫力のある花火を洞爺湖畔 にてお楽しみいただけます。 A 187 day Firework Festival from April 28th to October 31st. Every evening from 8:45pm, for 20 minutes at Toyako you can enjoy the fireworks being set off into the night sky from the surface of the lake - enjoy twice the colours as the display reflects upon the water.

群来まつり KUKI FESTIVAL

ニシン漁で栄えた泊村。ニシンの大群が押し寄せること を「群来 ( くき ) る」と呼ぶ漁師たちの言葉から名づけら れたお祭りです。泊村の味覚を堪能できるほか、さまざ まなアトラクションや歌謡ショーが催され、フィナーレ には海面を彩る花火大会が開催されます。 Tomari-Mura is a village that flourished from herring fishing. The festival was named after the fisherman word "Kukiru", which means a large school of herring.

At the Kuki Festival in Tomari-mura, you can enjoy the fresh taste of seafood as well as various attractions. As a final event, a firework display is held from the surface of the ocean. The display reflected upon the water is a great visual spectacle and a fantastic opportunity for a memorable photo.

さっぽろ夏祭り

SAPPORO SUMMER FESTIVAL

毎年 100 万人以上が訪れる、札幌の夏の風物詩となっ ているイベントです。大通公園に国内のビールはもちろ ん世界各国のビールが飲める国内最大級のビアガーデ ンが登場します。また北海盆踊りやさっぽろバザール等 のイベントが約 1 ヶ月に渡り北国の夏を盛り上げます。 This is the biggest domestic beer garden festival in Japan. The Festival is held at Odori Park and is an event where national and international beer can be enjoyed. Every year, around one million people flock to this event. For about a month there is a ferry to the Northern provinces, where people can come and enjoy Hokkaido Bon Festival and Sapporo Bazaar, which makes for an exciting summer.

The festival offers stands with sweet, ripe cherries, a This famous and delicious water is produced by Mother Nature and Mt Yotei. In just one day, Fukidashi cherry pit spitting championship and bingo!

Park spouts approximately 8 tons of spring water.

近郊の新鮮な農産物や海産物、または自慢のパンやス

海への感謝と、郷土小樽の発展を全市民あげて祈念す る「おたる潮まつり」は、小樽の夏を代表するイベント として定着しています。会場内には地ビールや地元で取 れた魚介類の炭焼きなど百店もの露店が並びます。約 6000 人が踊り歩く 「潮ねりこみ」や郷土芸能 「潮太鼓」 「み こしパレード」 「大花火大会」などが行われます。 This is Otaru's most famous summer festival, "Otaru Ushio Festival". This festival is where local people show gratitude to the ocean and pray for the growth of Otaru. At the location of the festival, there are more than 100 street stalls where you can find a variety of local grilled seafood and beers. Over 6,000 people attend the festival to watch some of the well-known parades such as "Ushio Nerikomi" Parade, "Mikoshi Shrine Parade" and of course, the fireworks display.

KUTCHAN SHRINE FESTIVAL

後志地方開拓の祖神である、阿倍比羅夫将軍が祀られ ている倶知安神社の例大祭です。 神楽やみこし、町指定無形民俗文化財の「赤坂奴」が 町内を練り歩きます。頓宮前には露店も並んでいますの で、夏祭りの風情を楽しんでください。 Shiribetsu locals open up for the ancestral God, General Hirafu Abe and celebrate at the Kutchan Shrine Festival which is an annual event for the area.

At the Shintoist ritual, parades pass through Kutchan Town and you can encounter por table shrines, music and dancing accompanied by food stalls and entertainment from a bygone era. Enjoy the taste of the summer festivals.

ニセコ町七夕の夕べ花火大会 NISEKO FIREWORKS FESTIVAL

ニセコを愛する人々による、 「小さなふるさとつくり」を コンセプトにした花火大会です。 １５００発の打ち上げ花火が会場のすぐ近くで打ち上げ られるため、迫力満点です。イベントは午後 2 時から始 まり、様々な露店が出店するほか、むかしの遊びコー ナーや手持ち花火など子供向けのイベントが多く、ご家 族でお楽しみいただけます。

Come relax in this open-air festival with event stage and great food stalls featuring dried herring fillets - a popular seafood item of Iwanai. A fireworks display over the bay area is held on the evening of the 6th.

ヒラフエリアでの夏のイベント、ひらふ祭り。ニセコエリ アのレストランが出店する屋台や農産物や海産物の販売 もあります。夜には盆踊りや花火大会、お食事券やアク ティビティー利用券などの景品付餅まきなどが催されま す。アットホームな雰囲気で地元の人たちとの交流を楽 しめるお祭りです。 An event held in Hirafu during the summer. This is a festival where you can find stalls of local restaurants, local producers and seafood. At night you can enjoy the Bon Dancing, fireworks, and prize draws for free giveaways, dinner and activities. It is an enjoyable festival where local people will make you feel at home.

The concept of this festival is "a small place held dear to someone's heart", and it is dedicated to 共和かかし祭り people that love Niseko. Over 1,500 fireworks will be KYOWA SCARECROW FESTIVAL displayed into the Niseko summer night. KUTCHAN JAGA FESTIVAL (KUTCHAN POTATO FESTIVAL)

倶知安町の特産品であるじゃがいもにちなんだ、倶知 安町夏の一大イベントです。制限時間内に袋にじゃがい もを詰めて持ち帰る 「じゃがいもジャンジャン取り」や 「人 間ばんば」など大人も熱中するイベントが盛りだくさん です。1 日目の夜は「じゃがねぶた」、2 日目の夜は花火 大会と、2 日間朝から晩まで楽しめるお祭りです。 This is the biggest summer event in Kutchan to celebrate Kutchan's specialty, the potato (Jagaimo in Japanese). The games at the festival are a popular attraction amongst adults. On the first night you can enjoy the exciting "Jaganebuta" parade and on the second day, you can enjoy the festival from the morning until evening when the fireworks display is held.

港町岩内町の海沿いで開催される開放感あふれるイベ ントです。ステージイベントが催され、身欠きにしんの グルメなど様々な海の幸を味わえる屋台が多数ありま す。6 日には岩内港から打ち上げられる海上花火を楽し めます。

Our favorite "Raiden" watermelons producer, Kyowa with a population of 6,000 - hosts over 30,000 visitors in this two-day festival. Scarecrow contest, Banba horse racing, and food stalls are available.

Pacific Music Festival (PMF) brings musicians from all around the world and is an international educational music festival with the aim to popularize music. The concerts are held for free in each city and they vary from orchestral to benefit concerts. There is also the familiar "picnic concert" where you can thoroughly enjoy classical music while eating and drinking under the clear blue sky.

Co-sponsored by Kutchan Jaga (Potato) Festival, the Hill Climb starts at Kutchan town and goes to Niseko Annupuri G oshiki O nsen; a total o f 15.5km o f t ime trialed road racing to an elevation of 617 meters.

Nearly 600 racers attended last year, and the 7th Hill Climb has become one of the major road bicycle races in Hokkaido.

is well known for its various festivals and celebrations, and within the country, Niseko’s temperate summer climate makes it the perfect location to enjoy fun, food and games outdoors. Lush scenery, warm weather, and a thriving cosmopolitan community add unique elements to the Niseko experience with a diverse blend of local delicacies and international foods, fashions and customs.

With cheap flights daily, it’s no surprise that so many travel to the region for respite from the sticky summer heat found further south. An escape with clean surrounds and clear water to dip one’s toes into which can’t so easily be found within the endless concrete jungles of metropolitan Tokyo, not to mention access to some of the country’s most idyllic golf courses.

While Niseko enjoys immense popularity during the winter months where many thousands of tourists flock to enjoy the bottomless powder, it’s no secret that when the snow melts the region experiences a significant reduction in international interest – a predictable concern for business and property owners during the off-season but serendipitous in the comparative tranquillity the warmer months bring to the region.

With summer events on the rise in Hokkaido, we spoke to long-time Niseko resident and Events-Enthusiast Cezar Constantine – owner and manager at Niseko Pizza and the renown “La Andy” Pizza Bus; a permanent fixture at many festivals throughout Japan over the years – he shares with us some of his experiences and his thoughts on Summer success in Niseko going forward… 四季折々に姿を変える羊蹄山と見渡す限りの大自然に囲 まれながらも、とても国際色豊かな町。パウダーを求める 観光客で溢れ返る冬とは違うものの、比較的涼しいと言 われる夏のニセコは、都会の喧騒とコンクリートの照り返 しから逃れてきた日本人で賑わいます。夏のイベントを更 に盛り上げていきたいと語るニセコピザのオーナーであり、 ニセコ在住歴も長いシーザーさんにお話を伺いました。 La Andy ピザバスと仲間を引き連れて 2008 年から参加し たイベントは 30 以上にもなり、ライジングサンロックフェ スティバルや、出店するのは国内最難関と言われるフジ ロックフェスティバルにも初の北海道からの店舗として参 加を果たしました。 夏のニセコビアガーデンやひらふ祭りでは、雨でも楽しん でもらえるように工夫を凝らすなどして、毎年恒例のイベ ントにもサービス精神と向上心を忘れずに取り組んでおら れます。 夏も営業している隠れ家のようなニセコピザのレストラン で、シーザーさんはニセコの将来が楽しみで仕方がないと 嬉しそうに語ってくれました。どこかでピザバスを見かけ たら是非声をかけてみてくださいね。

Tell us about your journey serving pizza at Japan festivals...

During the summer of 2008, we started attending smaller events with the La Andy Pizza Bus… probably over 30 events during that summer and the following years. But our breakthrough moment was attending the Rising Sun Festival in Hokkaido, which we attended for four years running. I think our attendance at Rising Sun was a real advantage because in 2011 we were accepted to set up shop at Fuji Rock in Honshu – the first Hokkaido-based food stall to attend in the history of that festival!

That sounds quite prestigious!

There was a lot of pressure because it’s such a strict event; they only have 100 spots reserved for shops each year, and they have a program in place which favours local services so only half of those spots are open for the rest of the country to apply for, plus many of the remaining spots are already reserved by returning shop owners… our first year there were only 8 unreserved spots for potential newcomers!

Travelling so far and representing Hokkaido must have been a challenging experience?

Of course! The logistics of transporting literally all of the supplies; food, equipment, generators etc – we had a convoy including a 4-tonne fridge truck, the pizza bus and a support vehicle… *laughs* - we were younger then!

Once inside, the pressure only increased – after being shown our spot, outlined by a rope, we start unloading, setting up and preparing – all under the close scrutiny of neighbouring veteran store owners and officials taking photos of each step of the process. At some point during the setup process, one of the tent poles shifted causing the boundary rope to bend slightly… the shrewd officials spotted this and we had to repack and shift the whole shop a few inches to the side so the rope would remain straight… it was scary how meticulous it all was!

So it’s safe to say you’ve learned a lot over the years?

I think it’s all about being organised and clean… if you present your service professionally – then you will make the cut. And of course, you need to be able to sell!

Bringing it back to Niseko a bit – what sort of involvement do you have with events in the area?

We are involved with a lot of events here too; the Annual Niseko Beer Garden started in 2010 – we were having a summer bbq at my house, and we invited a few friends around, and as is the Niseko way during summer I ended up with half the town in my yard!

The following year we decided to upsize a bit, so we started the Sunsports & BBQ event at an outdoor venue for a couple of years before upgrading the event to be the Niseko Beer Garden we know today with premium beers, raffles, games and prizes, international food and live music.

Last year we were also a sponsor of the Hirafu Matsuri – we provided a large marquee which I think went down well because it was raining again! It was a really great event... and I personally really enjoy the Hirafu Matsuri.

Speaking of rain – I guess there are a few challenges when it comes to organising and coordinating an event in Niseko?

Rain. That’s it really. Anything you do – even if it’s been sunny all month – be prepared for rain just in case! If you’re ready for it, then it’s no issue because you’re prepared, and if there’s no rain then it’s a bonus!

What do you see for the future?

Niseko already has a lot happening right now, I think everyone understands and knows that events are a big part of making Niseko more enjoyable in Summer. I think a lot of companies are working together, and it’s quite a progressive area which helps a lot.

We can all feel that Niseko is going to continue to grow even without the snow - it’s getting more intense, there’s higher competition which is a good thing for our customers who are here to enjoy the services, food, resort etc – I think all the companies here are striving to do better.

Compared with other regions in Japan and elsewhere in the world, what happens here in Niseko is unique - it’s moving in a positive way.

It feels good.

The majority of the snow that covers Mt. Yotei every winter does not just melt away in spring but gets absorbed by the mountain itself, filtered through the ground and resurfaces as spring water some 50 to 100 years later!

Natural spring water is pH balanced, contains minerals that are high in calcium and magnesium, and is free of most contaminants typically found in drinking water. Many farmers, restaurateurs and locals consider it to be some of the purest water on the planet and visit the springs year around to collect it to use and drink.

Such springs can be found dotted around the foot of Mt. Yotei in areas such as Kyogoku, Makkari and Konbu onsen. 1/ 京極ふきだし公園 Fukidashi Park A scenic 20 minutes’ drive through local farmlands to the West of Niseko will bring you to Kyogoku town. Here, set in the beautiful surroundings of Fukudashi Park, you’ll find the most popular spring in the area. There is a large park with a children’s playground and wide open spaces that are great for picnics and ball games. There are also food stalls in summer selling locally made croquets, fried chicken and coffee made from the spring water.

2/ 真狩 Makkari Makkari Village also has an extremely popular natural mineral spring where Mount Yotei spring water flows out of the ground year round. A very good tofu shop, Yuusui no Sato, is right next to the spring so you’ll probably find yourself stopping in for some sampling whilst you wait for a space to open up to get water. Nearby is a camping ground at the base of the Makkari trail to the top of Mount Yotei.

3/ ニセコグランドホテル Niseko Grand Hotel A short 15 minutes’ drive from Hirafu village is the Niseko Grand Hotel. Better known for its mixed onsen, just across the road you will find a small spring bubbling from the ground. Whilst not as popular as Fukidashi Park or Makkari, it’s convenient for many locals and the water tastes great. Why not have an onsen while you’re out there.

YOTEI SPRINGWATER 湧水の里 Tofu - Yusui no Sato Located on Route 66 just outside of Makkari next to the popular Mt Yotei Natural Spring. Yusui no Sato combines the mineral water from this spring and local soybeans to produce some of the finest tofu in Japan. There are so many varieties of tofu available you won’t know where to start. Louie Chan, Managing Editor of HK Golfer samples the delights of summer in Niseko, Hokkaido, a region renowned for worldrenowned skiing, but now one that has become a great golf destination in its own right.

HK Golfer Magazine の編集長、ルイ・チャン氏にグリーンシーズン も魅力満載のニセコについて語っていただきました。 日本最北に位置し、本州に次いで 2 番目に大きい島、北海道。中 心都市の札幌は、1972 年にアメリカとヨーロッパ諸国以外で初の 冬季オリンピック開催地となって以来、世界中からの旅行客が訪れ る観光地として成長を続けてきた。ニセコの降雪量は世界第 2 位で、 年間平均して 15 メートル以上にもなる。 北海道を訪れてまず驚くのが、170 以上もあるゴルフコースの数。 そのうちニセコ周辺だけでも 10 コース程が存在することだ。バブ ル崩壊以降は会員以外でもプレーできるパブリックコースが増え、 プレー料金も安くなり、 この北の大地はまさにゴルフ天国だ。冬期、 道内のゴルフ場は積雪で営業ができない為、営業期間は 5 月から 10 月まで。1 日 2 ラウンドのゴルフ三昧や 1 ラウンドの後に温泉で リラックスするなど、お好みに合わせて幅広い楽しみ方ができる。

This northerly island – the second largest in Japan – became a globally recognised winter sports destination with the awarding of the 1972 Winter Olympics to the capital Sapporo. This was the first time a Winter Olympics had been held outside of the USA and Europe - although Japan had previously been awarded the 1940 games that were subsequently never held. Sapporo then became a growing destination for tourists, predominantly domestic until the numbers of overseas visitors grew exponentially following the establishment of the highly regarded tour operator such as SkiJapan.com and its followers. This area, with nearly 600 inches of average annual snowfall, is officially the second snowiest resort in the world.

Golfing wise, perhaps the biggest surprise for a visitor to Hokkaido is finding that there are over 170 courses on the island, with around 10 easily reachable from a base in Niseko’s accommodation hotspot Grand Hirafu. Once largely private, the boom and bust of the late 1980s to early 1990s led to many of the courses opening to the public and prices plummeted. Whilst painful for the developers, it has made the region a golfer’s paradise. Having such a breadth of facilities available in the most sparsely populated area in the country means tee times are readily available and at bargain prices.

Golf here is, of course, exclusively a summer pastime with courses open from May through October. The weather is perfect for golf at that time, and unlike elsewhere in Japan, 36 holes in a day is easily possible — although a leisurely 18 followed by a visit to the onsen P H O T Oalternative. / NISEKO PHOTOGRAPHY (hot baths) is a delightful

Only a 40-minute drive from Niseko, there are two superb Rusutsu golf facilities worth a visit, but be careful not to mix the two! They feature two Curtis Strange designs - not-so-imaginatively named River and Wood – and a superb chalet-style clubhouse. The clubhouse is renowned locally for its “Genghis Khan Barbeque”, which takes place on a huge wooden deck and is cooked on a hotplate in the middle of your table. Ice-cold beer, which is poured from the taps on the deck itself, makes for a great finish to a highly enjoyable 36-hole day here. ニセコから車で 40 分ほど走れば、 ルスツリゾートゴルフ 72 にたどり着く。72 ホールのうちの 36 ホール、 リバー ウッドコースはカーティス・ストレンジプロ設計・監修。36 ホールを楽しく終えた後は北海道名物ジンギスカ ンと冷たいビールで乾杯できるクラブハウスもある。

Hanazono is the best of the bunch in many ways. Great facilities, superb conditioning and memorable holes, with Mount Yotei forming a breathtaking backdrop on many of them.

The wind plays an important part here and the four par-5s can make a mockery of the stroke index if the breeze is coming from an undesired direction. The 16th, in particular, is a spectacular beast when played into the breeze. The par-3s here are also a memorable feature. All four are challenging – especially the 17th, which from the elevated tees looks longer than its 201 yards. The green is narrow and a lake protects the front. With the wind straight into the player (as it was the day we played) a par here is a great result. グリーンコンディションが抜群な上、羊蹄山を眺め ることができる最高に美しいコース。ここでは風の 攻略がとても重要になる。特に16番は美しいホール だが風が吹くと荒々しい獣の側面を見せる。4つのパ ー3はいずれもチャレンジング。特に17番201ヤード・ パー3は201ヤード以上の距離に見え、グリーンは狭 い上、手前に構える池が容易な進入を阻む。風を味 方につけることができれば思い出に残る素晴らしい プレーができるだろう。

The Wood Course here is undoubtedly one of the best in the region. A more forgiving layout than the River, this is nevertheless no pushover.

The picturesque second is an early wake-up call: rated handicap index one, this is a treelined monster at 454 yards; accept a bogey and move on. As with every course in this area, the scenery is breathtaking and makes it difficult to concentrate on the mundane matter of keeping the ball in play. As ever, the wind is a factor, made more challenging due to the sheer number of trees that shield its presence from the tees. Overall, a delightful combination of beauty and bother, you will want to play this again and again. このエリアで間違いなく一番と言えるのがウッドコー スだろう。 リバーコースよりもフェアウェイが広く、 ゆっ たりとしたコースレイアウト。2 番ホールは目が覚め るような美しいホールだが、ここはインデックス 1。 両サイドに OB ゾーンの林が続く454 ヤードのパー 4。 素直にボギーを受け入れ次のホールを目指したい。 このエリアのコースはいずれも息をのむほどの景観 が広がっており、プレーへの集中力を欠いてしまう ほどだ。すべてのプレーヤーが何度でも訪れたいと 思うに違いない。

Rusutsu Resort - River Course The River Course compensates for its shortness by being ill-tempered and dour if not treated with respect. Narrow fairways with steep run-offs on either side would be painful enough. That the run-offs often lead to out-of-bounds makes this a tricky track to master. As the name suggests, water plays a part on many holes and it’s best to keep the big stick in the bag and plot your way around here. This is especially true on the par-5s, which are all short enough to reach in two, but all feature narrow landing areas. Overshadowed by the elegant Wood Course, nevertheless, this is a very fun course in its own right. リバーコースは、フェアウェイが狭い上アップダウン が激しいため、両サイドの OB には注意したい。ボー ルの落としどころを見極め、コントロールを重視す ることがポイントとなる。距離は比較的短く、特に パー 5 は 2 オンも十分可能。距離の出ないゴルファー も積極的にバーディーを狙っていける。

LEAP INTO NISEKO: CANYONING TITLE みなさんはキャニオニングというウォーターアクティビ ティをご存知だろうか。 ヨーロッパでは歴史あるスポーツとして有名で、日本 ではまだ歴史が浅いこともありキャニオニングという 言葉自体、知らないという方もいるかもしれない。 キャニオニングとは、川の地形を利用して渓谷の水流 を滑り降りたり、滝壺にジャンプしたり、探検したりと、 自然と一体化できるアクティビティだ。 その成り立ちを調べてみると 1860-80 年代にフラン スの洞窟学者などによる研究から生れ、やがてそれ は 1986 年にスポーツとして知られることにより、イタ リア、スペイン、ドイツなどヨーロッパ各地に広まり、 それが海を渡り日本に入ってきたようだ。 山と渓谷が多い日本では地形的にもキャニオニングが 全国で楽しめるため、2000 年代に入って急速に人気 のアクティビティとして注目されはじめた。 もちろんここニセコエリアでも人々を楽しませた豪雪 が生み出す清らかな雪解け水により、絶好のキャニオ ニングポイントが各地に作り出される。 キャニオニングの魅力は何と言っても、深い緑の渓谷 で川に溶け込み、身体一つで自然を楽しめる気持ち 良さである。

For

most people who live in and visit Niseko, this might only resonate with them during the winter season. Of course, hiking up to the top of Mt. Annupuri or exploring the wide range of backcountry options here in Niseko during the winter season rewards you with not only breathtaking views but world-renowned deep powder runs.

That being said, mountain climbing in the summer season is equally rewarding with spectacular views of the lush green Hokkaido nature and beautiful sunrises above a sea of clouds. I think that the mountains of Niseko are calling all year round, especially one mountain in particular.

The magnificent Mt. Yotei (also known as Ezo Fuji as it shares a striking resemblance with Mt. Fuji) towers over the Niseko area at an elevation of 1,898m (6,227 feet) and is one of Japan’s 100 most famous mountains. It is technically an easy hike but be prepared for some muscle aches and pains that come with climbing for 4 or more hours and another 3 to 4 hours descending.

If you are the adventurous type, I highly recommend climbing at night. There is something archaically surreal about being out on the mountain alone under a blanket of stars with just a headlamp guiding your way to the summit.

Before heading out on any mountain climb remember to always prepare well.

Bring lots of water (2 to 3 litres) and plenty of snacks. A waterproof jacket is a must in case the weather takes a turn for the worse. A warm down inner jacket or fleece is needed as the temperatures at the peak during the early morning hours drop to single digits and can feel even colder with a slight breeze. Make sure that you have sturdy mountain climbing shoes with good ankle support, and a strong headlamp and spare batteries. If you are so inclined, also bring a portable gas burner for your morning coffee and for a hot Cup Noodle breakfast.

Depending on the route and your fitness level, start your ascent between 10 pm and 11 pm with the aim to reach the summit at 3 am. The sun rises around 4 am but it starts to get light half an hour to 40 minutes before this which gives you some time to catch your breath and brew up a hot cup of coffee.

The beginning of the climb can be daunting as you enter the mountain trail in the dark, surrounded by unfamiliar night sounds and looming trees. Rest assured that this sense of uncertainty will fade away once your breath starts to get heavy and you start to concentrate on your footing as you beginning to ascend. Don’t be discouraged if you can’t see the stars at the beginning of your climb. More often than not, you will ascend above the clouds around the 6th or 7th station and be rewarded with a blanket of breathtaking crystal clear stars. Remember to take frequent breaks and enjoy the tranquil silence and peacefulness of the night.

From the peak, the sunrise is absolutely breathtaking. You will either be rewarded with a beautiful sunrise above a sea of clouds as far as the eye can see or you will have the pleasure of seeing the Niseko landscape from a bird’s eye point of view. Both are a joy to behold, and for however long you relax at the peak while drinking a hot cup of coffee, I guarantee that all your worries and troubles of everyday life will be the last thing on your mind.

There is more to John Muir’s famous words and the full quote goes, ‘The mountains are calling and I must go, and I will work on what I can, studying incessantly.’ John Muir was a master observer who enjoyed the constant work of understanding nature. While we may not have time to study and understand the nature that surrounds us, we can definitely learn to appreciate it and respect it.

The first step to do so is easy: go outside and simply enjoy the beauty that nature has to behold. 登山開始、午前 3 時頃の登頂を目指すと良い。日の出は午前 4 時頃だが、その 30-40 分前から薄明るくなってくるので、その間にコーヒーで一息しながらゆっく り待とう。 聞きなれない夜の音を耳にして、ぼんやりと見える木々の中を進んで行くと、これ からの道のりに不安を感じる始めるかもしれない。だが、登りが始まると呼吸や 足元に集中するようになるので心配は無用。星が見えないからといってがっかり するのはまだ早い。大抵の場合、6-7 合目くらいで雲より上に出れば、頭上には 満点の星空が広がるだろう。無理をせず、休憩をとりながら、夜の穏やかな静け さを楽しむことが一番だ。 山頂から眺める日の出はかなり感動的で、見渡す限りどこまでも続く雲海が広が っていたり、日によってはニセコの全景を見下ろすことができる。コーヒーを片手 に、時間も心配事も疲れも全て忘れて、目の前の絶景をいつまでも眺めていられる ような気分になるはずだ。 自然保護の父と呼ばれるジョン・ミューアはこう言った。 「山が呼んでいる、私は 行かねばならない。常に自然について学び、一番の理解者となりたい。 」

However, a little-known secret lies only a short journey from Hirafu, while still in its infancy Niseko beer (Niseko Brewing Company) has now been operating since 2014 under the direction of Sakurai Shigeru. His microbrewery is located in Niseko Town with the restaurant overlooking Niseko Station and the onsen area. With stunning views of Mt Annupuri, you can enjoy one of his craft beers overlooking Niseko’s amazing powder in winter or stunning greenery in summer.

Sakurai took over ownership of Niseko brewing company in 2014 and has been fine-tuning his craft beer recipes ever since, he now has 8 varieties of craft beer all with their own unique flavour, brewed with fresh Niseko spring water and using ingredients from Hokkaido and the local area to give each beer its own original theme, using fresh hops from Furano while the Rosée Bierre uses organic grapes and fruits from Yoichi. With a cold winter lasting 6 or so months, Hokkaido summer ends in the blink of an eye. Starchy foods are probably the most distinguishing feature of Japanese-style BBQ. Traditionally, cooking quick and easy yakisoba or simple plain rice using a black metal bucket called Hango were predominant; but the modern Japanese are becoming more creative with western-inspired BBQ recipe like bagna càuda served with pan-fried pizza or grilled camembert baguette sandwich to add a little twist and make the most of summer outings.

When it comes to in-season local produce available in this area, you will be spoiled for choice. Go explore Niseko View Plaza or Marche Yukidaruma (located in Homac, hardware store) for straight-from-the-farm vegetables, such as corn, asparagus, zucchini, pumpkin, eggplant, green peppers, cabbage, mushrooms, onions, carrot, not to mention our favourite Kutchan potatoes.

lures many fishing lovers from all over Japan. The mountainous area Niseko also has popular fishing spots - rivers, lakes, and the ocean - within a 90-minute drive distance or less. Whether you fish in rivers, lakes, or the ocean, different types of tackle and casting techniques are necessary. Select the best bait for that specific type of fish you want to catch in the river. Families can enjoy lake fishing and camp out nearby. The ocean offers seasonal variations of fish, and you can expect a larger catch!

尻別川 / Shiribetsu River 川釣りの聖地として全国の釣りファンに広く知られて いる。2016 年まで、15 回も水質ランキングで日本一 になり、昨年までは 7 年連続という快挙をなしとげ た。豪雪地帯で知られるニセコの春は雪解け水が多 く川の流れも速いので、本格的なシーズインは 6 月 からだ。この時期になるとニジマスやヤマメが釣れ、 7 月に入ると水温が上昇し、イワナやオショロコマな ども楽しめる。魚釣りは基本、日の出、日の入がゴー ルデンタイムと言われ、夏になると日没時間が変わ り 7 ～ 8 時位まで釣を楽しめるのはうれしい限りだ。 冬になると―20℃になることもあるが、巨大ニジマス を求め防寒着に身をまとい足しげなく通う釣人を目に することもある。ニセコ大橋下、昆布駅近くの湯山 別橋、家族連れの場合は真狩川公園内（細川たかし 記念像）の小川などが分かりやすい釣場だろう。尻 別川での釣りをする際は、ウェダーとライフジャケッ トは必需品だ。 Widely known for having the nation’s best river water quality (total 15 accumulative years, 7 years in a row until last year), the fishing season begins in June. Snowmelt adds a large volume of water into the river, creating a powerful, rapid flow.

Rainbow Trout, Landlocked Salmon, and other Hokkaido native fish appear from July onwards.

The temperature could drop down into -20 degrees Celsius during winter month, but that doesn’t matter for the passionate trout fans. The best spots are under the Niseko Ohashi (yellow bridge), Yusanbetsu bridge (near JR Konbu station), and Makkari River Park. A wader and life jacket are the must-have items.

北海道では、シーズンを通し多種多様な釣りを楽しむことができ、日本中からた くさんの釣客が訪れる。山々に囲まれたニセコでも、 、90 分以内のアクセスで様々 な釣りを満喫できる。川釣りは、水中環境を想像し狙ったところにキャストする。 また時期に応じて、魚の好む毛針や餌を選ばないといけないので、魚との知恵比 べ要素を一番感じるかもしれない。湖では水の中に入らなくても陸から投げるこ とができ、針が川釣りほど根掛りすることもない。キャンプ場が隣接しているとこ ろでは家族連れでも楽しめる。海釣は季節によりいろいろな種類の魚がかかり、 沖にでると 60 ㎝を超える巨大魚にも遭遇できる。ここではニセコから気軽に行け る釣りスポットを紹介する。

支笏湖 / Lake Shikotsu 支笏洞爺国立公園に属する日本屈指の浸透度を誇る カルデラ湖はヒメマスの生息地として有名で、長径 13 キロメートル、短径 5 キロメートル、周囲約 40 キ ロメートル、最大深度約 360 メートル、平均水深約 265 メートルの湖だ。秋田県の田沢湖に次ぐ、日本 で 2 番目の深度を誇り巨大な水がめと形容されてい る。水温は年間を通して非常に低いが、その深さゆ え厳冬期にも凍ることのない日本最北の不凍湖であ る。ヒメマスは全長 20 － 30 ㎝で最大で 50 ㎝まで 成長する。いくらやエビなどを使った餌釣だけでなく、 ルアーやフライも人気だ。解禁期間は 6 月 1 日から 8 月 31 日で、釣りのできる時間も指定されている。支 笏湖で釣りをする際は、遊漁料が必要になり、また 自身が所有するモーターボートを使う場合は、千歳 市スポーツ部観光事業課への申請が必要だ。美笛川 河口近くが人気ある釣り場の 1 つだ。 This northernmost, never freezing lake is the second deepest in Japan and said to be the clearest lake in the whole country. Located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the fishing season is between 1st June and 31st August, with curtailed fishing hours.

The main resident is Sockeye Salmon in the 20-30cm size, possibly up to 50cm long. The most commonly used baits are red caviar (ikura) and shrimp, but plugs and flies are becoming popular nowadays.

ニセコから車で約 45 分で到着するレジャーフィッシン グスポット。週末になると、バーベキューを楽しみな がら釣りを満喫している家族連れで賑わっている。4 － 6 月にかけてはホッケ、5 ～ 7、10，11 月にかけて チカ、9 月になるとサバやマイワシが釣れる。サビキ 釣りが主流で、釣れるときは家族で 100 匹以上も可 能だ。針に餌を付けずに、撒き餌をするだけなので 小さな子供でも楽しめる。また 3 ～ 5 月はカレイの 投げ釣りも狙いだ。旧フェリー埠頭の角がサビキ釣り のポイントとして人気がある。 A famous family-friendly fishing spot is Iwanai town, just a 45-minute drive away from Niseko.

Types of fish found in this area are Righteye Flounder (March-May), Okhotsk Atka Mackerel also known as Hokke (April-June), Surf Smelt (May-July, October-November), and Mackerel and Sardine (September onwards). Try Sabiki bait rigs, your whole family could catch more than 100 fish.

The old ferry pier is everyone’s favourite spot.

Deep Sea 寿都 / Suttsu Town

ニセコから車で約 60 分のところにある漁港から、釣 り船がでている。陸釣とは魚のサイズや水深が異な り、本格的な竿と電動リールが必要になる。しかし ながら漁船に貸竿と餌があるので心配はない。赤色 のイカ切身を針につけ、海底 100m のポイントに仕掛 けを落とす。底に餌が付いた後で 3 回ほどリールを巻 き、しゃくり始めると、60 ㎝を超えるタラや、大きな サイズのカレイやホッケ、刺身が絶品な柳の舞が簡単 に釣れる。 （天候にもよる）また大物がかかっても電 動リールが付いているので誰でも簡単に巻き上げるこ とができる。船酔い対策としては、近年強い薬が薬 局で販売されているので試すのもいいかもしれない。 7 ～ 11 月にかけてはヒラメも狙いだ。 For a great day on the water, fishing vessels can be booked just an hour away from Niseko. Cod are usually larger than 60cm, large-scale Righteye Flounder and Hokke, rockfish-like Yanaginomai (perfect for sashimi!) are relatively easy to catch. You need the right fishing pole to reach 100m down to the ocean bottom, as well as electric power assist reel for big game fishing. Go for flatfish between July and November.

大物遠投釣り

Long Distance Surfcasting 島牧 / Shimamaki Village

天然のアメマス（海アメ）とサクラマスを海で狙う。 江の島海岸を中心に全国のアングラーに知られている のが島牧だ。ピークシーズンは 12 ～ 3 月の 4 ヵ月間、 この時期になると海岸はたいへん混み合い、10-15m 間隔で人が立ち並ぶ。釣法としては 40 － 50g の大き なルアーを付けて遠投し、速いスピードでリールを巻 きルアーが海面を泳いでいる状態にして、アタリを待 つ。大物がかかると、ものすごいパワーで魚が走り、 リールから糸が出ていく。魚とのファイトに勝ったあ との爽快感はなんともいえない。地元では 1991 年ア メマスダービーが初めて開催され、今でもピークシー ズンの 4 ヶ月という長期間を通して毎年行われてい る。ここ近年の優勝ラインは釣人の間ではモンスター と呼ばれている 80 ㎝クラスだ。 またフライフィッシングでもこれらの魚を狙うことは でき、時期により魚の好む餌も異なり、12 ～ 1 月に かけては、ルアーフィッシングに分があり、2 月以降 はフライフィッシングとも言われている。釣り場のポ イントとしては、 セイコマート裏の河口近辺 （フライフィ シャー向け） ）や江の島海岸、島牧道の駅裏の河口付 近が人気の釣場だ。 A home for White-spotted Char (Ame-masu) and Cherry Trout (Sakura-masu). During the peak months (December–March), this place becomes a special fishing destination for anglers from all over Japan. Winning the intense battle of reeling in and pulling up certainly gives you the biggest sense of accomplishment. The Ame-masu Fishing Derby has been held since 1991, the winning fish have been socalled monsters, at least 80cm long for the last few years.

Use heavy lures of 40-50g, and know how to choose your bait depending on the time of the year. Lure fishing is recommended from December to January, and fly fishing from February. Join the crowd usually found at the mouth of the river behind Seicomart (for fly fishing), the Enoshima shore, or the spot behind Michi no Eki (roadside rest area) Shimamaki.
