MAPPING Ambli And Ahmedabad Semester I (Group Work)

The exercise intended to create the maps of Ambli village and Ahmedabad city respectively. Ambli village was divided into the gride of 4x3 and each groups were allotted with the place respectively. Mapping was done with the navigational memories and the observation that each had, and was a play of different line types and hatches.

Ahmedabad city was divided among all the students, and the exercise was to map the way from each students house to Indus University connecting the roads to form a whole map. Important landmarks were marked to denote places. The intend of the exercise was to train our mind to recall the memories, as the exercise was also known and ‘Memory Mapping’.

Contextual Study

Uvarsad Village, Gandhinagar Semester V (Documentation) (Group Work) Uvarsad, a village near Gandhinagar is not like a typical village. The village has now incorporated modern architecture and modern lifestyle. Studying the life of humans between typical and modern makes this village interesting.

H O US ING S T U D IO

The intend of the exercise was to study and observe the streets of the villages. Studying built forms as an individual unit with its characteristics, to how two build form creates space, to a group of built form creating a small cluster, group small clusters creating bigger cluster and group of bigger clusters connected with streets and forming one whole village. Also how important landmarks .i.e, schools, ‘Arogya’ centres, shops, temples are placed.

Design Project

Uvarsad Village, Gandhinagar Semester V The program focuses on horizontal and compact housing design as per Gandhinagar climatic response. 32 housing units were required to design on a tight compact site with 2BHK and 3BHK units. Also controlling 60%-40% ration of built and unbuilt area.

H O US ING S T U D IO Section CC’

The design intend to give the same street experiences to the users which are found in villages. A well designed street with small pockets opening to the streets creating gathering spaces, play of plinth levels and sizes allowing different activities, a junction of two streets with hight plinth and a tree creating a gathering space where children can play and aged people and talk.

Design Project

Riverfront, Ahmedabad Semester IV The studio was based on understanding of the essence of the material and climate. The brief was to design recreational spaces such as coffee house, exhibition space and performance space. The site was situated on Riverfront(East) Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad located in hot and dry climate requires mutual shading. The material explored in the studio was Bamboo, and Rammed Earth walls(wall maximum of 15m).The main function decided was performence space and supporting spaces were coffee house and exhibtion space.

Detail 2

The design process started with the idea of having pause points and having circulation, i.e. a path as services and the spaces as served spaced. Also considering river an advantage to the design, creating a visual connection to it. Bamboo being slender and strong material, the entire structure is built with bamboo with Rammed earth wall support.

Design Project

Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh Semester III (Thangka Painting Institution) The studio was based on studying the lifestyle of the people living at a particular place. Dharamshala located in Himachal Pradesh on the edge of the Himalayas surrounded by cedar forest in Kangra district. The place is famous for Tibetian culture and Tibetian paintings, i.e., Thangka Paintings.Studying the lifecycle of the people understanding their mental and physical aspects, Thangka Paintings Institution was to be designed. Studying thangka painters works, their anthropometry, their needs around them, their comfort, light quality in space positing of painters one after the other, hours of daily work, were essential aspects to be studied and apply into the program.

P E OPLE & P L ACES

Mass and void, an important concept followed to design on hilly regions. Observing the chaotic condition surrounded by the high rise building of the site, the design built needed to be submerged into the nature. Mass are the closed space .ie., workshops, shops, living room, kitchen, bedrooms. Whereas voids are the inbetween spaces or the open space which help to create mass. The strong representation of the concept is being reflected in the elevation and plans.

Design Project

Auroville, Chennai Semester VI (Archive) Auroville, an experimental township thought and created by Mother and Shree Aurobindo on the idea of human unity, sustainable living and spirituality, where the life revolves around the Matrimandir. The place attracts many tourists from different corners of the world throughout the year, and especially architects and artists for its planning and architecture. People also come to Auroville as a volunteer in organic farms around, and as a researcher. The site is located near the crown road, opposite to Pre- Cherche, on the way to Deepanam school. Site area in 1250 sq. m and built up area is 250 sq.m

W OR KING DR AWIN G S

Archives is a place where primary source documents that have accumulated over the course of an individual or organization’s lifetime, and are kept to show the function of that person or organization. The project proposed is an encyclopedia of the Auroville, catering majorly to the Architects, artists and planners. Auroville being an experimental township could have a built of record for all their studies, research and experiments. The built is the experiment in itself between two contradicting material in properties. Poured earth being a bold, rigid and massive structure and steel simple strong and visually light material. Controlling the character of both the material overpowering is a main challenge.

Design And Buil With Cardboard, Ahmedabad Semester VI

Workshop main intentions were to explore paper as a structural material. Exercise like bridge construction, load testing, form making, joinery exploring helped more to know paper as a material. Main aim was to construct two 1:1 structures out of honeycomb sheet.

PA P ER E X P LOR AT I ON

Construction of two structure with two different joinery pattern was challenging. First structure has MDF joinery with two strip locking system in it, with shear sheets on the edge of the honeycomb sheet. Second structure was purely out of honeycomb sheet, where each element interlocks with each other to form joinery.

Section across street

The RSP intend to document the character of the street and the lifestyle of people on a busy market street. Below documentation is a street in Mcleodganj which is 6.2KM from Dharamshala. The street is near Dalai lama temple. A narrow street with thousands of walking tourists and cars moving with handicraft and food stalls on the edges makes the street busy. Documenting the vernacular house forms in the villages near Dharamshala taught many interesting joineries possible with stone and mud construction.
