THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR In a male dominated EDM scene I am genuinely proud of the NERVO sisters, who not only cracked the DJ Mag Top 100 DJs list (total boys club), but broke into the top 50.

We’ve got an in-depth story on how they began as musicians, followed by a great interview. The men in EDM are wonderful, but the fact that these two ladies are creating a ruckus in the electronic music scene brings a smile to my face.

hen you’re looking for refreshment, the beverage choice you make depends entirely on the setting that you find yourself in. An outdoor summer party might call for an icy margarita, blended together with playful ease and garnished with summer fruit. Glitzy New Years Eve parties clearly call for the matching sparkle of a Champagne Flute. With dimmed lights and sophistication in the air, an undeniable choice for an elegant night out should be a cocktail made with DRAMBUIE Liqueur.

Movers & shakers Featured Sommelier Melissa Bremner | Tetsu

Melissa Bremner: Chef Masa created a new concept to add to his awe-inspiring line-up of fine dining restaurants. Tetsu is his vision of teppan. It adds another component with various proteins, which also adds dimension to the wines that would be fit for pairing. Chef Masa still stands true to his “purist” beliefs showcasing the freshest products for guests to see and indulge in.

NGM: Where did your affinity for wine come from?

MB: I have always had some form of interest for wine as long as I‘ve been in the restaurant industry (13+ years). As my passion grew, I was offered once-in-a-lifetime opportunities and received endless support during my MGM Resorts International management years, which allowed me to be who I am today.

Melissa Bremner not only has an affinity for food and wine pairings, she can accent any Japanese dish with the perfect sake. After working for various MGM establishments in food and dining, this Las Vegas native works as a sake sommelier in one of Sin City’s top teppan restaurants and creates tantalizing pairings of every kind.

NiteGuide Magazine: Tell us about your venue?

Fueled by a passion for his work, Flores knows how to rub elbows with the established and break new talents and products into the spotlight. With offices all over the world, this globe-trotting public relations expert knows how to shine in the nightlife industry.

NiteGuide Magazine: What lead you into the PR world?

Rembrandt Flores: To be honest with you, it was a combination of things -friends telling me I should be a publicist and colleagues throughout the industry saying I must be a publicist. I guess it was destiny and my true calling because I ended up exactly where I was meant to be.

NGM: Founding a PR firm that stretches across the globe must have come with its ups and downs. What’s a challenge that motivated you?

RF: No matter if you are local or global, being a creator and entrepreneur always has its challenges. I am fortunate to have a partner that not only thinks big, but is able to make it a reality. His motto is, “There are no problems, only solutions. You just have to find it!” With that in mind, we constantly 14 20 niteguidemag.com niteguidemag.com

NGM: How does a sommelier factor into a great night out?

MB: A night can be nice and enjoyable, then can change to magical and unforgettable with the help of a sommelier. They can elevate a guest’s experience whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or out “just-for-the-heck-of-it,” by connecting and recognizing what the guest is looking for. It could be finding the perfect pairing or introducing a region/ varietal they’ve never had. Such examples can push and strive for better. Due to our successes here both in the pr, events and marketing space, we are consistently being sought out by global brands to help them in other local markets.

NGM: Is it fair to say working in PR requires a certain type of personality?

RF: That’s absolutely fair! You really need to have an outgoing personality coupled with a VERY thick skin to survive in the world of PR. I am constantly dealing with a myriad of personalities and temperaments so I have to maintain a positive attitude while navigating through this to get my many jobs done.

NGM: What’s the biggest misconception about PR firms?

RF: That we are all the same! I hate when I hear that from a potential client. Essentially what we are trying to achieve is the same, but how we get there is what sets EFG apart. We truly do think outside the box, and are always pushing ourselves to see what we can do for our clients that hasn’t been done before or put a twist on what has been done before. In the end, we want to spread our clients’ message so that they are all successful in their perspective fields.

NGM: How do wine lovers fit into Sin City?

MB: Las Vegas is one of the best cities in the world to accommodate to any and all interests.

Specifically for our wine world, many passionate, experienced, educated people have made Las Vegas their home and have built the foundation to make this city a place for wine lovers to indulge.

NGM: Can you share any advice to our readers regarding what to ask a sommelier when looking for the right wine?

MB: The right wine is what you’re in the mood for.

What is going to take you to your happy place?

The more I learn about your taste and what you want from your evening, the better I am able to serve you.

NGM: How do you think a PR firm helps those that work in various areas of nightlife?

RF: We help by spreading awareness as widely and as quickly as possible. At the end of the day, the world of nightlife wants their venues filled with great people that have lots of disposable income.

We are here to try to make sure people know about these venues and why they should go.

NGM: What’s the greatest reward your company has brought you to date?

RF: Tough question. The fact that I have been able to traverse the globe, spend time with Alisters and meet some of my idols, industry icons and new friends has proven to be the most rewarding part of this job. I have checked off a lot of things on my bucket list because of EFG and I am eternally grateful for those experiences, lifelong friendships, and business relationships.

NiteGuide Magazine: What initially pulled you toward performing?

DJ KAMOFLAGE: I always wanted to make people party.

NGM: How do you feel Southern California’s club scene compares to others in the U.S.?

DJK: Southern California’s club scene is great because it’s a perfect combination of all the great elements of nightlife but wrapped into one general area.

NGM: Can you share with us a memory of a gig that got particularly rowdy?

DJK: New Years Eve 2010 at the Hilton Hotel in Costa Mesa. I was headlining in one of the rooms and the entire hotel had hit capacity. There were even a couple thousand people

Featured cocktail server Tawni Lindquist | HURRICANES Adapting to a nightlife environment comes naturally to Tawni Lindquist, who works as a cocktail server at one of Huntington Beach’s most popular Main Street hangouts, Hurricanes. Originally from Washington state, Tawni shakes up the nightlife scene in Southern California.

NiteGuide Magazine: What do you like to do in your spare time?

Tawni Lindquist: I am a pretty mellow person, I like being with friends and hanging out.

Going to the beach, working out, shopping. I usually get my nightlife fix while at work.

NGM: How did you break into the fast-paced nightlife industry?

TL: Not really sure how it happened, I have always enjoyed the nightlife. It’s definitely different being on the serving end of things. You get to see all the action from a different perspective. It’s fun!

NGM: What drew you to Hurricanes?

TL: I actually had never been to Hurricanes

outside just trying to get in. I saw people onstage popping bottles of champagne all over the unsuspecting crowd and security definitely was outnumbered by thousands of OC partiers.

NGM: Have you ever thrown in a down tempo track to calm an overly excited crowd?

DJK: Yes, but only at the end of the night.

NGM: Do you prefer digital or vinyl?

DJK: I prefer vinyl. I am a scratch DJ and always will be. That’s how I started and that’s how I’ll end. You have more control of all the elements with vinyl, which allows you to be more creative and perform a better show; and if you love to scratch, it’s the only way to go.

Although, I have adapted to the current trends and have no problem using any set up but my first choice is always turntables.

DJK: Knowing that everyone is having a good time just because of you.

NGM: Where and when can our readers find you performing?

DJK: I have performances every week at all the hottest clubs in Hollywood and occasionally in Orange County as well. I also do house parties and private events for special occasions. The best way to keep track of all performances is under my events section on www.facebook. com/djkamoflage

NGM: Do you like mash-ups? What’s the craziest mash-up you’ve ever performed?

DJK: I enjoy mash-ups and the craziest mashup I ever did was 2pac lyrics over a Rage Against the Machine instrumental.

NGM: What’s the most thrilling part about being a DJ?

before I started working there. I had heard about the light up dance floor but that was about it. A couple of my girlfriends worked there at the time and told me about it so I tried it out.

NGM: How would you describe a typical crowd at Hurricanes?

TL: Very thirsty!

NGM: How does the beach crowd compare to other crowds?

TL: Definitely more of a younger demographic. When they go out, they go ALL out!

NGM: What keeps you motivated on a late night shift?

TL: For the most part we have a really fun crowd of people. The people mixed with the loud music, fun vibe, and my coworkers for sure get me through the night.

NGM: Can you share a tip on enjoying a successful night out?

TL: Leave the drama at home!

NGM: Do things drastically change once summer is over?

TL: Yes, it goes from crazy to chill overnight, it seems like. All the tourists go home and it’s pretty much just locals and regulars. Hurricanes has some very loyal regulars –we absolutely love them.

NGM: Can you share any stories of clientele gone wild?

TL: I normally have a story or two to tell in the morning, but there is something about the color changing dance floor that brings out

Sidewalks stay crowded even past midnight, when night markets, eateries, and pubs begin to bustle. Most nocturnal activities include shopping, late night eats, drinking, dancing, and karaoke. Whether you’re admiring the dazzling city lights from any of the high points in Taipei or exploring the night markets or pubs on street level, this East Asian island is sure to keep you entertained. Here are some noteworthy spots to hit in Taipei.

Myst Night Club

On top of one of the best views in Taiwan, Myst Night Club offers some of the best music in the nightlife scene and is one of hottest clubs in Taipei, with lots of space to lounge, drink, and dance. Brought to the scene by local nightlife giants, Rama Thai and the Brown Sugar Entertainment Group, Myst is the premier clubbing experience on the island. You won’t find many other places with so much space and so many people waiting outside to fill it. The interior is adorned with distinguishing features like an indoor waterfall and neon lights, but its main attraction is its open-air wrap-around patio with private booths, a separate bar and a full view of Taipei from just about every vantage point. Weekends are always packed, so consider booking ahead if you’re planning to visit Myst.

The biggest dance club not only in Taipei but in Taiwan, Luxy is the place to head to for famous international DJs who spin on a regular basis. Self-described as a “contemporary nightlife complex,” the club draws both a local and international crowd with its electric sounds, luxurious décor and infamous drink specials. There are three main areas—a hip hop room, an electronic/trance room, and a lounge area. Top acts like Infected Mushroom, David Guetta, and Armin Van Buren have hyped the crowd at Luxy, earning it its reputation as the go-to club in Taipei.

Luxy is open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

Room 18 Among the trendiest and most modern of lounge bars in Taipei, the neon-lit Room 18 is stylish, and its bartenders are consummate professionals. The club is broken into two spaces, Room 18 and 18 Lover. Room hosts a large dance floor with a music mix of hip-hop and electronica with a spirit-heavy drink menu. Whiskey and brandy are popular here. While a night at Room may be a bit expensive with high drink prices and a cover charge, the lively exciting atmosphere is well worth it.

Brown Sugar Extremely popular and boasting a reputation for fine live music and cuisine, Brown Sugar is modeled after your typical New Orleans jazz bar. Offering a mix of jazz, blues, and Latin flavors, the well-known band plays most nights, and the food is not to be missed. Brown sugar is one of the best places in Taipei to enjoy live music.

Shilin Night Market The night markets in Taiwan are abundant in snacks, clothing, arcade games and places to sit, observe and enjoy each other’s company. Shilin Night Market is the largest and most historic in Taipei. The food court is a free-for-all with its most famous features including tempura, fried chicken steak, stinky tofu, and oyster vermicelli. One of the most popular city destinations after dark, Shilin Night Market is sure to be one of the most interesting cultural nighttime experiences you can get in the city.

acklemore & Ryan Lewis aren’t your average hip hop duo. The Seattle-based rapper and his producer constructed songs about thrift store shopping, equal rights, and Nike Air’s, all found on their runaway album, The Heist. On October 25th at the Observatory, Macklemore and company brought the house down.

Macklemore (Ben Haggerty) walked onstage like a man with the world at his fingertips, full of confidence and swagger. When he turned his back to the audience with one arm extended, I wondered for a moment if this would be a show inflated with ego and self indulgence. From the moment he spun around to face the crowd until the last note of the encore, Macklemore and beatmaster Lewis proved me wrong -in a huge way.

The intense energy this group brought (and it was indeed a group effort) had every person engaged with a parade of vocalists, dancers, a brass section and an electric cellist. Macklemore’s natural ability to connect with the audience through both humor and grit left him bouncing, dancing and crowd surfing into the tightly packed (and young) group of fans who showed up for the performance. There was a tender moment as well, when Macklemore pulled up a bar stool and performed his new single that supports same-sex marriage, “Same Love,” with vocalist Mary Lambert.

Charm emanates from this rag-tag and highly enthralling hip hop outfit. The ability to ignite an audience with out-of-the-box lyrics coupled with a supporting cast of lively performers make Macklemore & Ryan Lewis one of the best tours to catch this year.

THE LUMINEERS

all it folk rock, call it Americana, call it what you want; a music reminiscent of a simpler way of life is moving in on the scene.

Multi-instrumental and clad in suspenders and fedoras, The Lumineers are branching away from much of the mainstream style we’ve heard as of late.

The Lumineers are not one of your run of the mill, cookie cutter groups that “just want to make it.” The indie-label band, based out of Denver, has taken pain-staking efforts to ensure that they are making their music, their way. To avid music-lovers, their process of artistry is a dream come true. The Observatory in Santa Ana housed the group’s sold-out show on October 7th, and within the first few moments of the gig it was easy to see why they attracted such an instantaneous following. Wesley Schultz, Jeremiah Fraites, and Neyla Pekarek took the stage (along with some very special guest musicians) and proceeded to woo the crowd with their respective instruments. Playing hits from their debut album, Fraites livened up an already amped crowd by inviting them to sing, stomp, and clap along with several songs. The group also delighted fans by venturing out into the audience to play in the center of the venue, after which they invited one lucky devotee to join them on stage to sing the first verse of “The Weight” by The Band.

The Lumineers put on an amazing show for music-lovers, by musiclovers, and for every reason possible- it works.

Catching Up With Matt Tong of Bloc Party

fter a long hiatus, UK indie-rockers Bloc Party are back on tour in support of their new album Four. NiteGuide reached drummer Matt Tong at his current home in Brooklyn (during the close of Hurricane Sandy) to discuss the album, touring, and why Fleetwood Mac charts high on his list of hopeful tour mates.

NightGuide Magazine: We’re catching you in New York correct? How are you?

Matt Tong: I’m good. I live pretty much in the center of Brooklyn, away from the usual evacuation zones and my neighborhood was fortunately spared the worst of the storm.

NGM: How’s the tour been so far –outside of super storms? Any flat tires or out of the ordinary shenanigans?

MT: Super storms appear to be a running theme of our world tour this year. We seem to be busier than we ever were before and we keep getting sick, it’s made it hard for us to raise merry hell.

NGM: Have any cities rocked more than expected?

MT: We just played a show in Manchester and whilst it’s always a good laugh playing there, the crowd on this particular night was totally out of control. Good times.

NGM: Tell us about life on the road? Do you guys enjoy the time together?

MT: Life on the road truly is a succession of Spinal Tap-esque hissy fits. We’re careful about how we spend time together because one thing we never quite understood was how to assert our need for a bit of space and I think that created quite a lot of tension in the early years. But we definitely enjoy the good times for what they are, absolutely.

NGM: So I’m really interested to hear how Four came together. Did you have songs that built up over the past three years or did you guys just get into a room and start jamming?

MT: A bit of both. Russell (Lissack, guitarist) had been stockpiling some huge riffs that he couldn’t wait to unleash once we got back together. We jammed a lot too but seemed to find a new focus that we never had before.

NGM: Do you have a favorite song off the new album?

MT: “Coliseum” because it begins in a bluesy place that’s new to us and then halfway through it just rips everything apart.

NGM: So the band was on a pretty long hiatus before Four came to be. Do you feel that the break was an opportunity to rejuvenate?

MT: It really was. I think the time off allowed us all to use our brains in ways in which we had become somewhat distant from and it truly did us all a world of good.

NGM: What’s one band you’d like to tour with in the future?

MT: Fleetwood Mac. I’d be interested to see how their particular brand of touring dysfunction compares with ours.

Azari & III’s self-titled debut album has the feeling of a record you’ve already lived with for quite some time now, but have never actually come to own. This album acts as a portfolio of the last four years for Azari & III, showcasing some of their newer gems with already proven major hit singles. The massive summer ‘09 anthems, “Hungry for the Power” and “Reckless (With Your Love)” finally find their way to the States and lay way for the albums classic revivalism sound, combined with today’s modern influences. Tracks, “Tunnel Vision” and “Indigo,” create a tense, edgy acid-house atmosphere emulating the vibe of early instrumental and miminal house that effectively take you on a journey through musical ideals.

O

rchestrating electronic dance music often involves a variety of players, including DJs, producers, songwriters, and vocalists. While many electronic artists carry double duty as both DJs and producers, few hold all four titles.

NERVO attacks EDM from every angle, quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.

Miriam (Mim) and Olivia (Liv) Nervo’s affinity toward sound began at the age of thirteen, when the girls would converse through song while walking home from school in their native Australia. After being discovered by a producer in their mid-teens, they fell helplessly in love with the studio and later moved to the UK where they began working with electronic artists –consequently picking up a passion for all things EDM related. Now one of the top-touring EDM acts of 2012, the pair have built a resume that includes the 2011 anthem for the world-renowned Tomorrowland Festival in Belgium, headlining slots at multiple summer music festivals, and the esteemed honor of being the only females to crack DJ Mag’s 2012 Top 100 DJs list.

After working with pop divas and starlets alike (the girls have penned songs with Kelly Rowland, Kylie Minogue, Ke$ha, and The Pussycat Dolls) NERVO made the transition from demo vocalists for their singers to vocalists on their own material. Self proclaimed clubbers and ravers, Liv shared they prefer the grind of the DJ lifestyle versus a life in the pop mainstream, stating “Where pop stars live the glamorous life, DJs dig into the nitty gritty.”

NiteGuide caught up with EDM’s leading ladies on an SUV en route to Manhattan, where Liv dished on their recent performance at Escape From Wonderland, how they feel about cracking the male dominated DJ Mag list, and what it’s like living the dream with her sister.

NiteGuide Magazine: How was Escape From Wonderland?

Liv Nervo: It was amazing. The crowd was insane! We had so many Nervo fans in the front row with their little t-shirts and signs. It was just incredible. We played a really great spot just before Martin Solveig, and we played a lot of really new material. There was a great reaction, so we’re very happy.

NGM: Congratulations on cracking the DJ poll. Where were you when you found out?

Liv: We found out just before the poll was actually announced, and our agent told us. We were in LA at the time and we were over the moon. We were in the studio with Kelly Rowland [laughing] which is funny because you know she’s been such a massive part of our career, from when we wrote “When Love Takes Over.” We had to do a little acceptance speech and video for being the highest ranked girls. It was just such an honor to be ranked among so many of our peers and people that we admire and look up to.

NGM: After last year’s male dominated list, does your placement come with a little extra vindication?

Liv: I do remember seeing those last year and thinking “Where are the ladies?” and thought, “well, if it’s going to be that hard for us to get in, maybe we should just really never expect to get in, because obviously girls don’t have much of a place on that list.” But this year we were so rapped with coming in; and coming in so high as well! We never expected to break top 50, not at all.

NGM: So festivals are a massive gathering of what I can only assume are your close friends. Is it all work and no play?

Liv: No, no,no that’s why we all love festivals so much! We all get to hang out. You know being a DJ can get a little lonely. Mim and I always have each other, which is great, but a lot of the solo guys like Nicky Romero have just got their tour manager, and who you need everyday. We all really do look forward to the Tomorrowlands, or the EDC’s, or the Wonderlands where we all get to hang out. And everybody gets to bounce from stage to stage supporting each other. It’s just like school camp for adults, with alcohol.

NGM: Your success has been crazy over the past few years. Is it more sentimental considering your experiencing it with your sister?

Liv: We love it. We’re always talking about it. We always have a friend on the road with us, and we can always share these amazing experiences with each other. I think that’s what keeps us so happy on the road, and enjoying what we do so much. It’s a big part of it.

ioneering his very own crossover trance/progressive sound, Artem Stolyarov, aka Arty, is becoming a household name amongst EDM lovers.

Delivering performances that encompass his varied tastes in music and unique style, Arty has scaled the ranks of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs, coming in right above Kaskade and Laidback Luke at number 28. NiteGuide had a chance to catch up with the 22-year-old Russian DJ/producer and learn about his production techniques, rise to fame, and recently developed Sirius XM radio show.

NiteGuide Magazine: With so many younger producers newly entering the electronic scene, what do you feel makes your music and style unique from the rest?

Arty: I’m just following my feeling about the music. Trying to bring something fresh and combine different styles. Mostly it’s more about progressive and a little bit trance sounds.

NGM: What originally drew you to producing Trance music? How do you feel your sound has progressed since you first started making music?

Arty: Trance music is beautiful. I found that it’s not just dance tracks; there is an amazing story that you can travel through. Speaking about my style, yeah, it changed a lot. More into progressive vibes, but I’m still trying really hard to keep this trancy feeling in breakdowns and put it all over the record.

NGM: Starting off your career while still attending University, how was the experience of dealing with school and DJing simultaneously?

Arty: It was a pretty complicated task for me, because during my last year in University I started to travel a lot, but was doing a lot of music at the same time. So it was pretty hard to find the time for all things, but I was probably pretty successful with it, because now I have a degree.

NGM: Were your parents supportive of the music life?

Arty: A LOT! In the beginning they were like “Yeah, making the music is pretty cool, but you should focus more on your studying” but after the first big steps in [my] career, they gave up. They saw how happy I am, and I bet that’s most important for all parents.

NGM: You’ve recently acquired a late-night Sirius XM radio show and Podcast, “Together We Are.” Tell us about that.

Arty: It was a long way for me to make this happen, but it’s a cool chance to find really amazing, different tracks and a chance to share them with my fans and listeners.

NGM: Your favorite track to play out at the moment?

Arty: I’m not selfish, but my remix for Zedd “Spectrum” is doing really well in live sets so far.

Behind the Decks

E

ver wonder what your favorite DJ is doing behind the decks? Whether they’re making it look easy or breaking a sweat, the art of DJ’ing goes far beyond simply throwing on a record or starting up a laptop. Captivating the audience and making people dance requires skill, research, and a bit of elbow grease.

The goal of any DJ is to energize the crowd and make sure they have a good time. However, the method of accomplishing this varies dramatically from person to person. Artists such as Pretty Lights and Skrillex use MIDI controllers to launch segments of their songs and manipulate them individually, creating more of a show-type experience, but requiring much more attention from the person in control. On the other hand, DJs like Nicky Romero and Steve Aoki use larger CDJ type mixers allowing them to let loose, play out their favorite tunes, and become more a part of the party.

Equipment is solely based upon personal preference: it’s how the DJ utilizes the buttons and dials to evoke emotion and make people dance that makes them a good performer. Although, there are a few basic skill sets that are absolute key in earning the DJ title.

Cueing

One of the most crucial functions to transitioning songs is the ability to listen to the song you want to play next. This is the act of “cueing,” and what the DJ brings their headphones for. Sound for the second track is completely off for the audience while the DJ listens to the tune in his headphones before introducing it to the mix.

Fading & Equalizing

Almost all DJs use some sort of mixing console with the ability to fade in and out of various frequencies of the given track. These knobs are often referred to as “filters” and allow the layering of certain parts of the track, such as the vocals or bass line with parts from another.

Beatmatching

Every song runs at a different speed or tempo. The DJ must make sure the two (or more) tracks are running at the same speed to mix seamlessly. This is usually done while cueing, adjusting the pitch slider to make the desired track the same beats-per-minute (BPM) as the one playing.

Song Selecting

Whether preselecting their playlist or choosing songs on the fly, this is probably the most important part of being a good DJ. Reading the audience and coming prepared with an arsenal of good music are vital skills to be mastered.

Effects

Coming in with a handful of different uses and names, these are the DJs bag of tricks for sound manipulation. From stuttering effects to siren-type “phasers,” these tools are used to help blend and mesh together sounds.

October IN REVIEW: FEATURED EVENTS GlowRun Lights Up Sin City Downtown [Las Vegas]

By Fred Dyoll | Photos by Roman Mendez Las Vegas welcomed the GlowRun on October 7th, where 3,000 runners gathered at the starting line on Bridger and Las Vegas Boulevard to participate in the illuminating party in motion.

People showed up in droves to be involved with the inaugural event, where professional and recreational runners grabbed their glow-gear and suited up for the five kilometer run. Participants sported more than just glow sticks and light-up necklaces, runners and onlookers alike were dressed in dazzling costumes, sparkling face paint, and flashing accessories. The route lead the brilliantly lit group through the heart of Downtown, ending at the finish line at El Cortez Hotel and Casino in the Fremont East Entertainment District.

After the run, Girl Talk (one of electronic music’s premiere DJs known for his playful mash-ups) performed at the post-run block party, with opening talent from Capital City. The GlowRun was organized in part by Insomniac, who also organizes the Electric Daisy Carnival in June. With EDC becoming cozy in Las Vegas, endless world-class DJ residencies at nightclubs, and now the GlowRun, Sin City is shaping up to be the newest mecca of electronic dance music culture. Here’s hoping the GlowRun makes its way back through Vegas next year.

Porter Robinson & Zedd Yost Theater [Orange County]

By Justin Olsen | Photos by MyClubScene.com | Martin Clara On Wednesday, October 10th, LED Presents brought the highly anticipated Porter Robinson and Zedd “Poseidon Back-to-Back Tour” to Orange County for a sold out night of musical chaos. Two of the biggest names in the dance music scene took to the turntables simultaneously for two full hours of complete electro-house destruction.

This wasn’t your typical evening at the Yost Theater in downtown Santa Ana. The entire structure pulsated with wall-to-wall unrestrained energy, awaiting the headliners to make their monumental appearance. Australian born DJ and Producer, Nick Thayer, readied the crowd for what was to be an unforgettable night. Building the anticipation with his pleasing blend of electro house and dub sounds, Thayer acted as a perfect introduction for the onslaught that was about to ensue.

The moment Porter Robinson and Anton Zaslavski, better known as Zedd, stepped up to the mixer, the entire room erupted with excitement. Camera phones lined the horizon as the LED walls came to life, delivering the main presentation and a completely new stimulant to the environment. Alternating back and forth on the decks, Robinson and Zedd blew away their eager fans with an unexpected blend of personal favorites and old-school house anthems.

Bringing a festival-like feel to a smaller, more intimate venue, the Poseidon Tour was definitely one of the biggest shows to hit the Yost Theater this year. Be sure to check out both Zedd and Robinson anytime they pop up, they’re an act not to be missed.

Festa Celebrates Italian Culture Little Italy [San Diego]

By Heidi Darby | Photos by Paul Nestor On Sunday, October 14th, the smell of pizza, pasta, and mozzarella drifted up India Street in San Diego, as people came in droves to San Diego’s Little Italy to attend Festa, now in its eighteenth year.

The Little Italy Festa is the largest Italian American festival on the West Coast, attracting nearly 120,000 food, drink, and entertainment lovers. The area itself is a juxtaposing, but beautiful, combination of old-world Italy and new urban development. India Street became crowded with people of every age ready to celebrate the Italian culture.

The entertainment was a mix of traditional Italian music and modern jams, and prompted people to dance in the streets all day long. There were various art exhibits as well –most notably the sidewalk artists who created vivid and breathtaking art for all to enjoy. There were cooking demonstrations and even a demo by celebrity chef Antonia Lofaso, from Bravo TV’s Top Chef. Italian cuisine was offered to attendees by various food vendors, and a beer garden housed a variety of ales. All in all, this year’s Festa was wonderful in every sense of the word.

Big Gigantic Hit Sunset Boulevard House of Blues [Los Angeles]

By Justin Olsen | Photos by Heidi Darby Continuing to ride out the success of their latest album, Nocturnal, Big Gigantic kicked off their Uprising Tour this fall with a full on riot. Fresh off performing a sold out gig to thousands of devoted fans at Red Rocks in Colorado, Big G launched their new tour with a couple intimate House of Blues gigs for Southern California. Friday, October 10th, they took over Sunset Boulevard with opener Griz, delivering a show exploding with heavy bass drops and ecstatic amounts of energy.

If there’s one word to describe a Big Gigantic show it’s “rowdy.” Multitasking between playing drums, saxophone and DJing samples, Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken provide an EDM experience that’s unique and trendsetting in current times. They keep the crowd engaged not only with their pinecone shaped LED set up that spits out trippy obscure visuals, but with their audience interactions as well, which really makes you feel a part of the show.

The venue provided a vibe worthy of promoters The Do Lab, and allowed for a great connection between the audience and the artists onstage. There was a certain warming energy that floated throughout the span of people, which created a pristine atmosphere to enjoy the funky and soulful beats.

Dada Life Album Release Incites Mayhem at Avalon

ever-loyal Los Angeles following. Tickets to the free show were gone in less than 10 minutes, drawing a massive wave of fans that couldn’t wait to get down to the group’s signature, in-your-face style music.

Kicking off the exclusive event, DJ MAKJ created an atmosphere that felt like one of the coolest underground parties ever thrown. Starting with an array of deep house and seamlessly building the excitement into more techno house and hip-hop, DJ MAKJ helped lay grounds for the magic that soon followed.

As expected at any Dada Life show, a plethora of bananas and inflatable champagne bottles lined the stage as the duo took to the tables. The Avalon’s production went into full effect with lasers filling the sky and heavy bass vibrations moving throughout the entire theater. Dada Life held the crowd in the palm of their hands, playing drop after drop of crunchy electronic house tunes that evoked everyone’s inner-party spirit.

The high energy and unrelenting beats eventually climaxed into a full on pillow fight that made for one truly unforgettable moment.

A.W.O.L. Sun In Cabo San Lucas Gets Rowdy

veryone knows that music can take you places, mentally and physically. If you’re passionate about music and travel, you might even cross borders to discover Another Way Of Life. The third annual A.W.O.L. Sun brought musical wanderlust to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico this October 12-16 for some fun, sun, and incredible talent.

The festivities began Friday at 1pm, ramping up crowds into the night when an LED screen-backed Stafford Brothers opened up for headliner Morgan Page. Fist-pumping fans enthusiastically jumped in the pool for some rowdy late-night fun as Ale Rauen closed down the night until 4am with a sky-high energy brought over from her native Brazil. A gorgeous Saturday brought fans back to Nikki Beach, piling in for Kevin Brown’s opening for headliner Bingo Players. WiReD closed out the early evening portion of the night, and afterward fans returned and headed to the sand for the Moonlight Beach Party. The DJ booth had been turned 180 degrees toward the ocean shore and Riley Warren rocked it so hard that people were still buzzing about it days later. Headliner DJ Stellar then took the stage, dropping techno until 3am when the party was closed out by the always-energetic Stafford Brothers.

A slightly-cloudy Sunday morning didn’t stop the Lifers from hitting Nikki Beach for the event. Tara Brooks opened for headliner Gareth Emery, who played until tropical rainclouds began to gather. Despite the rain, A.W.O.L.

Story by Megan Harvey | Photos by Topher Riley hosted the grand opening of SkyPool Dayclub at 10pm, where DJ Chris Garcia opened for A.W.O.L. veteran Chris Lake. The party didn’t stop as fans jumped in the jacuzzi, splashed in the pool, and danced in the rain all night and well into the morning.

Monday turned out to be a blast despite the fact that Nikki Beach was nearly flooded. The day party moved inside to Passion Nightclub, and by evening the rain had let up and the party eased into the indoor/outdoor portion of Passion. Though set times were altered due to the storm, headliner Michael Woods threw down an unforgettable evening set. At 1am, Anthony Attalla (who has headlined every A.W.O.L. event to date) enthralled everyone in earshot, including staff, partiers, and passersby. Just as the party had reached its pinnacle, Category 2 Hurricane Paul swept through the venue launching barware and curtains across the room--making for a truly memorable A.W.O.L. story to be told for years to come. Though guests had to retreat for cover, the party thrived in the hotel rooms –in true A.W.O.L. style.

Escape From Sets Off Nos

ibrant, dazzling, eager EDM enthusiasts flooded the entry gates to Insomniac Event’s 2nd annual Halloween bash, Escape from Wonderland. On October 27th at The NOS Event Center in San Bernardino, top-notch, face melting EDM artists such as Martin Solveig, Nervo, Steve Angello, Crizzly, Sander van Doorn, Laidback Luke, Borgore and many more pleased the masses.

Insomniac is known for consistently providing the ultimate, over-the-top experiences that make your heart race, and Escape from Wonderland supported that reputation. Insane décor transformed the venue into a haunted wonderland complete with daring mazes, luring art installations, and lurking “deceased” character performers ready to scare you around each corner.

Multiple food stands and free water refill stations were densely scattered, (as Insomniac always provides) to keep fans hydrated and healthy. The best part of the night was Insomniac’s new marketing tagline, “YOU are the Headliner,” which came into full effect. Festival goers felt they were meant to be a part of the whole experience, and an equally important attraction to the festival.

There was never a dull moment for the 10 hours of filthy bass and euphoric trance that Escape from Wonderland had to offer.

While the atmosphere was impeccable, a great event cannot be fabulous without the artists. The Slaughter House stage hosted some of the biggest names in EDM history. Despite some unexpected sound glitches and delays, Armin van Burren, who was added to the line up just days before the festival, tranced out the audience with an incredibly well structured set, with appropriate ups and downs to keep fans engaged. Calvin Harris also provided a standout set. Glitter confetti cannons and an array of lasers and lights sugarcoated his performance, causing fans to leave with a craving for more.

Halloween weekend’s top event set some high standards this year. It’s hard to predict what haunted twists and tricks Insomniac will craft next time to top this year’s Escape from Wonderland. For more information on Escape from Wonderland and other Insomniac events, visit www.insomniac.com
