The End of the Beginning:
EDM’s Giant Pay Day By Drew Leahy
E
lectronic Dance Music’s recent rise from a marginalized, stigmatized music genre to the heavily commercialized zeitgeist of the 21st century forever reshaped the business model of the music industry. Until now, never before could a major-label artist sell a paltry 20,000 units, yet sell out the Staple Center in minutes; or pull in $100,000 for a two-hour live set, but never hear their songs on the radio. The reason? A shift from a linear model based on album profits toward an avant-garde model based on free music sharing keeps EDM fans in tune like never before, scouring alternative forms of media for free podcasts and singles. The result? While EDM continues to appreciate with its fans, crowds at EDM festivals continue to grow, and income increases for its artists at incredible rates. A new frontier for live entertainment, technology, and collaborative ambitions brought forth by EDM sits well with fans and vindicates significant pay hikes for those DJ/Producers who are pioneering the way. So much so that Forbes recently declared the top ten highest paid DJ’s in the world. Take Deadmau5 for example: seasoned producer, devout cynic, mastermind of branding, and trailblazer of live performances. Back when most DJ/producers we know today weren’t a twinkle in their father’s eye, Deadmau5, a.k.a. Joel Zimmerman, was pioneering the future of live, interactive performance. By pushing the boundaries of technology and inventiveness, Deadmau5 created more than just a live show, he created an experience for his fans. Complete with interactive imaging, LED mouse helmet, and state-of-the-art light technology, Deadmau5 built an emotional experience, and EDM fans across the globe lined up in hoards to witness it. The bottom line— Ingenuity like this within the EDM industry puts the fans experience first, and the dollars start rolling in because of it.
David Guetta, French producer extraordinaire, broke down the barriers between EDM and pop music with violent force, and forever changed the way the world imagines house music. Though elements of house music appear in tracks as early as the 80’s, no one person managed to infuse the four to the floor elements of house music into mainstream pop music like Guetta did. The bottom line— By pushing the boundaries of collaboration, David Guetta reshaped the culture of EDM music and made it a household acronym . . .and he made a lot of money producing pop songs for major artists doing it. Technology, the fulcrum to which EDM balances on, is like a Phoenix: it burns to ashes and rebirths better, faster, and stronger (no pun intended) every time you turn on the computer. Artists like Skrillex use technology to propel limitless artistic endeavors not possible with one instrument, and use sound engineering to create soundscapes never before heard. The bottom line— Though many musicians of acoustic instruments will argue till the end of time that producers aren’t real musicians, two things are certain: the songs they produce have struck a chord with the masses so much so that on any given night in any major city, a sold-out crowd for an EDM artist is guaranteed. Producers like Skrillex set a well-needed flame of creativity under the music industry’s posterior so hot that its likely to blaze on forever, and pay dividends to its producers the whole ride long.
Forbes Top Ten Highest Paid DJs #1 Tiesto $22 million #2 Skrillex $15 million #3 Swedish House Mafia $14 million #4 David Guetta $13.5 million #5 Steve Aoki $12 million #6 Deadmau5 $11.5 million #7 DJ Pauly D $11 million #8 Kaskade $10 million #9 Afrojack $9 million #10 Avicii $7 million

All American BBQ Feast
est known for their lipsmackin’, hand rubbed barbeque slow-smoked in a pit of smoldering hickory, Famous Dave’s hearty menu offerings feature the most succulent meats, savory seasonings, and award-winning sauces reminiscent of good ol’ fashioned hospitality. “Home of the Big Slab,” Dave’s insurmountable commitment to monster portions separates them from any other barbeque shack. Insisting on a slab of ribs of more than 2-1/2 pounds rather than the commonly used 1-3/4 quarter pounders, Famous Dave’s generous portions speak on behalf of their dedication to hospitality. Not to mention each rib is carefully examined for the tenderest and meatiest pieces, while the rest is trimmed away. Indulge in the All American BBQ Feast featuring a full slab of St. Louis spareribs, a whole chicken, ½ pound of either Texas beef brisket or Georgia chopped pork, coleslaw, Famous Fries, Wilbur Beans, four corn-on-the-cob, and four corn bread muffins, and see for yourself why the critics are giving Famous Dave’s such praise (new Orange County location opening this fall, 2012).

abuki’s family-friendly, casual environment welcomes patrons to indulge in traditional Japanese fare, minus the overwhelming presence of Asian décor and music. Instead, Kabuki aims to pay homage to tradition by delivering quality and freshness in every tasty Japanese inspired entrée, in an attempt to make Japanese food synonymous with comfort food. Delicately prepared rolls like the Dragon Roll—fresh water eel on top of a California roll— showcase Kabuki’s craftsmanship and artistry, and typify the palatable flavors in every hand-crafted sushi roll at Kabuki. Their commitment to excellence in every facet of their restaurant earned them accolades ranging from best sushi chef to best local family restaurant, and speaks on behalf of their longevity and success.

mashburger’s unique name derives itself from its even more unique method of making hand-crafted burgers: instead of patties, Smashburger prepares its 100% Certified Angus Beef into large meatballs that are smashed, not squished, in order to caramelize the beef, creating a sear that locks in juices resulting in a tender, flavorful classic burger. Using only premium ingredients, Smashburger’s menu also includes all-white meat crispy or grilled chicken sandwiches as well as fresh-chopped salads, and the veggie friendly option of a black bean burger, all accented with hand spun Häagen-Dazs milkshakes. Try the Classic Smashburger and experience a classic cheeseburger the way it should taste: caramelized and juicy. Topped with classic ingredients like American cheese, tomato, ketchup, onion, pickles, lettuce, and smash sauce served on an egg bun, the Classic Smashburger is frighteningly tasty and perfectly simple.

Vodka

BROKEN SHED By Kristen Newman
If you’re tired of the same old brands of alcohol and are seeking a new, quality vodka with unique features and an exceptionally smooth taste, look no further. Broken Shed is proud to announce that they’ve brought their award-winning vodka from the mountains of New Zealand and recently launched it in the United States. Distilled four times from New Zealand whey, Broken Shed Vodka is free of additives and successfully blends two distinct water sources, Central Otago on the South Island of New Zealand and Tamiki on the North Island, to create the smoothest finish. They also utilize continuous depth filtering and a custom-designed charcoal filtration process to bring about the best possible flavor and the purest spirit. This unique vodka was founded in 2009 by partners Mark O’Brien, Mark Simmonds, and Steve Turner in the small lake town of Wanaka inside a broken down, old shed where the original recipe was created. In 2010 it was distilled, crafted, and bottled and then successfully launched throughout New Zealand. The shed has since been renovated and now holds tasting events. In 2011, the vodka was awarded silver medals at the San Francisco World Spirit and International Wine & Spirit Competition in England. With vodka brands constantly fighting to differentiate themselves from the rest of the over-crowded market in the United States, Broken Shed definitely stands out as a company with extraordinary heart and unmatched quality evident in every sip. Look for Broken Shed Vodka in stores now and to learn more visit www.brokenshed.com.

New Orleans F
or the past thirteen years, City Park in New Orleans has seen its share of legendary live performances from music’s biggest names. The Voodoo Festival, held there annually the weekend before Halloween, is often headlined by household names, but it also blends in some of the most respected musicians from the local Louisiana scene. It is a multi-day extravaganza celebrating art and music, and this year’s lineup includes Green Day, Skrillex, and Kaskade. It promises great music and a bit of sideshow spectacle with attendees donning outrageous Halloween costumes. If you’re keen on making your way to the Big Easy for the Voodoo experience, you should know that music isn’t the only thing New Orleans does big. The French Quarter and Bourbon Street host a vibrant and notorious nightlife scene. The city of decadence flourishes with good music, great eats, liberal liquor laws, and lively party people. Here are some of the spots you shouldn’t miss.
By Emmanuel Cayanan
Tipitina’s
With a capacity of 1,000 standing room only, Tipitina’s is a great place to catch a show in New Orleans. The size of the room allows you to feel close to the acts playing the stage. The Neville Brothers and Dr. John are some of the local favorites that play multiple times at this venue. In the summertime, Tipitina’s offers “Free Fridays,” where you can catch a show with no cover charge.
Pat O’Brien’s Having become the official watering hole of New Orleans at some point since its 1942 opening, Pat O’Brien’s claims to sell more booze per square foot than any other bar in the country. The crowd at this bar varies by age, and you’re likely on any given night to run into a bachelorette party, a 20th wedding anniversary, or a 21st birthday. The bar area of the establishment showcases dueling pianos where entertainers take requests from the audience. Pat O’Brien’s is a great place to enjoy a beer or a Hurricane, a rum drink invented at the world-famous pub.
The Metropolitan A late-night hot spot and favorite among NOLA’s fashion elite, The Metropolitan is a stylish and sexy nightclub that lives up to its name. This joint is equipped with three full-service bars that serve some of the best cocktails in the city. The Metropolitan is the premiere place in New Orleans to party until dawn and is open every Saturday at 10 p.m. for VIPs and 11 p.m. to the general public.

Preservation Hall It is as much a historical site as its name suggests, but Preservation Hall is anything but an old, stuffy museum establishment. It exudes the kind of liveliness that characterizes New Orleans and gives you a taste of historical significance. A noted jazz performance hall in the French Quarter, Perservation Hall rotates a sensational roster of jazz bands that perform nightly for an entrance fee of a mere $15. Preservation Hall is open from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. and admission is good for one 45-minute performance. This is the perfect place to kick off your night before heading to the surrounding bars and clubs. Photo by Native Orleanian Photography
Bar Tonique
Bar Uncommon
Bar Tonique comes in a notch above most French Quarter bars. It is smooth, sexy, and sophisticated with its cream-colored exterior and candlelight. The cocktail list is comprised of fresh juice-infused concoctions, and they even make their own tonic waters and cure their own maraschino cherries. Bar Tonique offers an extraordinary wine list with a wide variety of enticing selections available by the glass. It is a calm lounge setting set to smooth music, so it’s the perfect place to escape from the Bourbon Street chaos for a moment.
At the Pere Marquette hotel on Common Street, Bar Uncommon serves up some of the best cocktails in the Big Easy. This joint is all about the mixed drinks and the bartenders practice their artistry under the world-renowned chief mixologist, Chris McMillian. The dĂŠcor is done in a bold black, white and red color scheme with a sense of old-fashioned chic. Mint Juleps are famous here and old jazz standards play in the background. Bar Uncommon is a taste of the South.

I started networking and got into the night scene. NGM: What was your first experience with dancing? SN: I’ve been dancing all my life with jazz classes, but got really into it when I was hired at club Glam.
Kandyshop bikinis, they are one of my sponsors. NGM: Do you think you’ll get tired of working in the nightlife industry? SN: There are nights that I have to drag myself out. Sometimes driving home after work at three in the morning isn’t fun.
NGM: How did it lead to go-going?
NGM: What’s a song that always seems to pick up the energy? SN: LMFAO and some hood rap is my thing.
SN: I started getting booked at different venues and have been doing it every weekend since.

Featured Haunted Tour
By Electra Keller
O
range County is a cultural wonderland, with a rich amount of history attached to its name. What most residents are not aware of is the vast amount of paranormal activity attached to that history. Ever been curious about what goes bump in the night? Look no further than Haunted OC. Founder Ernie Alonzo and paranormal reality series star, Ramiro Ramirez (Mun2 Network’s “From Beyond”) collaborated to produce ghost tours and attractions that peak the interest of paranormal lovers and Halloween fans alike. The main attraction of Haunted OC is the Old Towne Haunted History Ghost Walk. The ghost walk is a 90-minute tour that takes guests to antique stores carrying a deadly past and a local building that once served as the old Orange Undertakers Morgue. This interesting tour gives attendees a unique way of seeing the old sights, and rest assured, the tour guides are all professional Paranormal Investigators. Tickets for the ghost walk are $18 per person, operating year round. The company also offers bus tours and paranormal investigation experiences with seasoned investigators as your guides. Haunted OC expands beyond tours and provides a variety of special events and lectures. On October 13, Haunted OC will be hosting “Noche De Calacas,” which will explore the roots of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The event also includes a traditional Mexican tamale dinner, tequila tasting, and a sugar skull workshop. For the literary supernatural lovers, check out a presentation on the history and interpretations of the Necromonicon held on October 22nd at the Orange Public Library with free, but limited, seating. On October 27, get educated on Victorian era seances & occult practices at the Historic Waffle Mansion in Santa Ana ($25 per), which doubles as a fundraiser for the Historic Society. What started with two gentlemen and a love for local history and metaphysical phenomenon, has now evolved into one of Orange County’s best kept secrets. Dark Devil Martini
• 1oz Pineapple Juice • 1oz Cranberry Juice • 2oz 7-UP or Sprite • 1oz Coconut Rum • 1/2oz Triple Sec
• 2oz Dark Rum • 1/2oz Dry Vermouth • Black Olive or Candy Corn
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
Shake in mixing tin then strain into chilled martini glass. Garnish with olive or candy corn.
Build in tall glass, stir, and garnish with an orange slice.
Candy Corn Quesadillas
Frankenstein’s Brain Shooter
Ingredients:
Ingredients:
• 1 Rotisserie chicken, shredded • 1 Jar (16oz) salsa • 1 Cup frozen corn, thawed • ¼ Cup barbecue sauce • ½ Teaspoon taco seasoning • ½ Cup butter, melted • 8 Flour tortillas (10in) • 1 Jar (15-1/2oz) queso dip, warmed • 4 Cups (16oz each) shredded Mexican blend cheese • 2-2/3 Cups crushed nacho-flavored tortilla chips • ½ Cup low-fat sour cream
Chill vodka for better smoothness. Add vodka and lime juice into a shaker; shake and strain into a shot glass. Transfer Irish cream with a drinking straw by holding your finger on the top end and slowly releasing the cream into the shot glass. The cream will curdle slightly due to the lime juice creating a brainlike effect. Add Splash of grenadine before serving.
In a large sauce pan, combine first five ingredients and thoroughly heat. Brush butter over one side of each tortilla. Place on tortilla, buttered side down in a large skillet. Spread with 1 cup chicken; top with another tortilla, buttered side up. Cook over medium heat for 1-2 minutes or until bottom is lightly brown. Flip. Spread ½ cup queso dip over top of quesadilla. Sprinkle cheese around outside edge. Cover and cook for 1-2 minutes or until cheese begins to melt. Remove from heat, sprinkle chips over middle of quesadilla and spoon a dollop of sour cream into the center. Cut into wedges and serve. Yield: 2 dozen.
• 1-1/4oz Flavored Vodka • 1/8oz Lime Juice • 3/4oz Irish Cream • Splash of Grenadine
Bloody Heart Brie Ingredients:
• 1 Large round of Brie cheese • 1/3 Cup cherry preserves • Assorted crackers
Take Brie wheel and carve off the inside of the top of the rind, leaving a slight lip of rind around the edge. With spoon, withdraw 1/4 of an inch of Brie, set aside. Place cherry preserves in top of Brie wheel. Bake at 350° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes. Carefully transfer oozing round onto appetizer plate. Take previously withdrawn cheese and use as stabilizer/glue for candy pumpkins or candy gravestones on plate. Serve with crackers. Yield: 10 servings.
Ghostly Cookies Ingredients:
• 1 Pound white almond bark, coarsely chopped • 1 Package (1 pound) Nutter Butter peanut butter cookies • Miniature semisweet chocolate chips In a microwave, melt candy coating; stir until smooth. Dip cookies into coating, covering completely. Allow excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper. While coating is still warm, place two chocolate chips for eyes. Let stand until set. Store in an airtight container. Yield: about 3 dozen.

Tricks For Your Costumes W
ith Halloween approaching, it’s time to start thinking about which iconic-superstar, evil zombie, or comic book hero will make a big impression at this years costume bash. Think back to last year. Everyone is dressed up, drinking, dancing, and having a good time, but how many costumes come to memory? Only the great and relevant outfits make for an ever-lasting experience. There are three secrets to pulling off “best dressed” at this years Halloween extravaganza: Be relevant, edgy, and most of all be yourself.
Be Relevant - Keep costume ideas up to date with current media or world events. Character Ideas
Edward Cullen
Workaholics
Favorite characters from recently new movies such as The Hunger Games and The Avengers or TV sitcoms like Workaholics and New Girl are sure to be smash hits with anyone. For Katniss:
No one cares if the best Dracula in the world walks into the room; all the attention is going to the strikingly handsome, imitation Edward Cullen.
• Two of your friends (preferably one with lots of hair) • Pair of slacks • Dress shirt • Tie
• Biker boots • Cargo pants • Black V-Neck • Backpack • Toy bow & arrow • Mockingjay pin
• Ray-Bans • Pea coat • Glittered face • Cheap fangs
Be Edgy - Push the boundaries of relevance, incorporate some spice into the mix. Bane
Current Zombies
Rather than dressing as the evil Joker from Batman, bring some controversy as the new, menacing villain, Bane.
Instead of becoming a random walking dead for the night, rise from the grave as Apple creator Steve Jobs or Michael Duncan Clarke. Think outside the box.
• Cheap $20 replica mask • Fur-lined trench coat • Fake/real body armor, or just backpack straps • Army-style boots
• Shaved/bald head • Black turtleneck • Apple sticker • Round glasses • iPod headphones • iPhone/iPad device
Be Yourself - Pick something that suits your personality and interests. Love EDM? Become your favorite DJ or Producer. Skrillex
Deadmau5
• Partially shaved head or Wig • Oversized glasses • Fake/real lip piercings • Pack of smokes
Turn that old hardhat and hamster ball that’s sitting around into one of the most iconic masks in history of electro, Deadmau5.
• 13” hamster ball • Choice of color felt • Hardhat • Glue • Tape • Safety Glasses • Lots of time on your hands
No matter what you decide to dress as, taking these three NiteGuide secret tips into account will ensure you’re making the most out of this Halloween.

Long Beach
Featured Haunted Hotel
The Queen Mary:
By Electra Keller
60 Years of History and Terror in the Making
H
istoric, beautiful, and haunting are just a few of the many words that describe the Queen Mary. The ship originated as a luxury passenger carrier in 1937 in Great Britain, and converted to a troopship during World War II. After service, the ocean liner was restored to her original grandeur, and eventually found a permanent home in Long Beach in 1967 offering rich, tumultuous history for all to enjoy. The ship provides numerous year-round exhibitions and events, (ranging from music festivals to historical exhibits) but thrives in October. During the Halloween season, the ship is transformed into a Halloween spectacular complete with fifteen spooky mazes, live music, food, and cocktails. The most famous events however are the nighttime attractions that focus mainly on the world-famous paranormal activity of the ship, available any month of the year. Having the reputation as being one of the most haunted places on the planet might be detrimental to some establishments, but the Queen Mary flourishes on its reputation of first-hand encounters with the paranormal. Over 150 known spirits are said to be haunting the ship and at least 49 deaths have been reported on site in the last 60 years, resulting in reports of slamming doors, high pitched squeals, and drastic temperatures. These accounts are just a few of the many supernatural occurrences inside the ship. Each room offers a glimpse into what transatlantic travel was like between the 30’s and 50’s, many of the rooms featuring original artwork and rich wood paneling, all setting the tone for an evening guests won’t soon forget. This tourist attraction brings in more than 1.5 million people per year. A visit to Long Beach (particularly in October) would not be complete without a stop at the Queen Mary. Beautiful Music is Boring Music. At Least Today. By Justin Olsen
28 niteguidemag.com
“Some people think too much when they go to the club, like about why they are there or how cool they look. We just want people to leave their brain at home, go party and have fun.” -Olle Corneer
I
n a world filled with copycats and very few top trendsetters Olle Corneer and Stefan Engblom, aka Dada Life, attack Electronic Dance Music with their signature style. Sticking to their roots and straying away from collaborations, the Swedish producers constantly move forward with fearless self-expression. Corneer describes their sound as, “Crashing into a wall, realizing you got blood all over yourself and it really hurt, only to find yourself smiling and wanting to do it over again.” It’s that raw energy and frenetic excitement that has sent Dada Life soaring to success over the past two years. Following the release of their new album, Rules of Dada, the music men embarked on a 40-stop tour entitled “Dada Land” accompanied by legendary LA dubstep producer 12th Planet.
ing Ultra, EDC Vegas, and Coachella, Dada Life continues to set the bar higher and higher for themselves. “Everything’s more commercialized, more people are starting to listen. We’re not afraid of it at all. Americans like everything. DJs are the gate keepers.” Always moving forward and believing their next song can be ten times better than the last, Dada Life continues to energize and shock the masses.
“The tour’s working great, we have a perfect hip-hop/dubstep opening which helps switch things up and the transition is amazing,” Corneer shares. “Dada Land” is not only the name of their current tour, but their Las Vegas takeover at Surrender Nightclub as well. Corneer and Engblom want to “spread the Dada” and create a place for everyone to exist in the moment. In fact, the pair offers a set of rules to their fans aptly entitled “Rules of Dada” where the group expresses their belief that “Beautiful music is boring music. At least today.” They maintain an extreme distance from boredom, starting with their obsession with bananas and champagne (the duo brought along 4,000 bottles of champagne and 8,000 pounds of bananas on their current tour). The curious fruit and drink pairing has acted as a branding object that draws an aspect of intrigue, adding to the excitement at shows with a more physical element. Recently breaking 300,000 Facebook followers, Dada Life has been spoken of as viral marketing trendsetters in the music industry. “We don’t think about it,” Corneer counters. “It’s fun, because you want more listeners. Everything builds gradually, it moves forward. We don’t talk about it or think about it.” With America’s recent EDM explosion, Dada Life has found their perfect niche where they continue to destroy dance floors with a smile. Dubstep Producer
Rusko By Fred Dyoll
D
J/producer Rusko has earned a reputation for rattling speakers –and cages. With his upbeat brand of dubstep, the musician has attracted the attention of M.I.A., Santigold, and recently collaborated with hip hop icons Cypress Hill. After a media-hyped feud with fellow EDM mainstay Deadmau5, Rusko continues to say what’s on his mind.
NGM: Where are we catching you today? Rusko: College Station Texas NGM: Rumor has it you like to party. Confirm or deny? Rusko: Who doesn’t like party? I like a nice cup of tea and a murder mystery when I’m on tour.
Rusko: Yeah, I focused from within to bring you a bad ass record again! NGM: And Cypress X Rusko, I can only imagine how fun it must have been making a record with Cypress Hill. What was a typical studio session like with all of you? Rusko: We sat in the dark and played Battle Ship ‘til we came up with an idea for a song.
NGM: Describe what a night’s like before you hit the stage? Rusko: We light some candles, blast Machine Head, pour a stiff Grey Goose and Red Bull, and proceed to punch each other in the face... Pretty standard.
NGM: How about performing live with the group? How was that? Rusko: It was everything it could have been... Just a big party with some homies.
NGM: Alrighty. How about after? Do you ever party with fans? Rusko: Sometimes I have pizza parties for the fans and I sit and listen to them critique my show and selection of songs.
NGM: Dubstep has completely taken off. How do you feel about dubstep popping up in mainstream culture and music? Rusko: I think it’s great diversity, never hurt anybody.
NGM: You’ve been quoted as saying you like to keep “on the level” with fans during performances. Can you elaborate on this philosophy? Rusko: I become them and they become me.
NGM: You’ve been known to ruffle some feathers. Is it fair to say you’re the bad boy of dubstep? Rusko: Well if anyone wears feathers in public they deserve to get ruffled!
NGM: Your sophomore album, Songs, continues to garner attention. Did you approach this album any differently?

Music Mogul
By Heidi Darby
J
Jermaine Dupri
ermaine Dupri carries nearly every title in the music industry, including record producer, rapper, DJ, and songwriter. He approaches life with an entrepreneurial attitude, operating as CEO of So So Def Records and recently embarked on a journey into social media with his flagship site GLOBAL 14. He’s worked with music industry power-houses that range from pop icons like Mariah Carey to alt-rockers Weezer. NiteGuide caught up with Dupri on his way to Indianapolis to discuss what’s currently on the forefront for the music mogul.
NiteGuide Magazine: You’ve worn basically every hat in the music industry. What excites you right now? Jermaine Dupri: GLOBAL14 and the things I see in my head happening with it. NGM: Can you tell us more about GLOBAL 14, and why it was created? JD: GLOBAL14 is my social network. It was created to home a community of people with the same likes, music being the main focus. But also art, DJ’ing, sports, new gadgets, fashion, and the word on the street alike. NGM: How is it impacting the social media world? JD: I’m not sure it has started to affect the social media world as of yet. My focus is much different than other sites, and the movement of the members is very much like a big family. They call each other out, they share music, information. They laugh and talk all day, every day. NGM: You’ve worked with so many heavy hitters in the music industry, was there a particular album you look back on and think, “That was an experience.” JD: My first album, Life In 1472, I didn’t actually know if people would even like it. I was trying things that hadn’t been done, like the first southern Jay-Z collaboration. NGM: You’ve also found your way behind the decks. How does being a DJ affect your view on the music industry? JD: Me being a DJ has always affected how I make records. I know when the tempo is about pick up; it feeds me ideas and things to write about, it also gives me a chance to test something before I put it out. NGM: Can you tell us about your current musical endeavors? JD: I’m currently working on my new artists, Leah Labelle and Frescokane. I have a new Whitney Houston record coming out in November. I’ve also got the new Mariah Carey single “Triumphant,” new Mary J Blige, GLOBAL14 Exclusive “Everyday People,” Ciara, and Dondria. NGM: You’re seasoned in every aspect of the business, a testament of your lifelong passion and hard work. Do you ever feel overwhelmed? JD: No! Actually, I feel like there’s so much I haven’t done yet, so I just keep pushing. NGM: What’s one bit of advice you’d give to someone looking to break into the music industry? JD: Know what you want first, because if you don’t, this s*** will crush you!

BAT FOR LASHES
Keeping Artistry Alive in the Music Industry By Heidi Darby
N
atasha Khan, also known as Bat For Lashes, is a musician who embraces individuality. The English singer-song writer perseveres as an artisan of sound and lyric in an industry overflowing with manufactured pop stars. Her newest album, The Haunted Man, is third in a body of work that has attracted an international fan base. Her first two records earned various industry accolades and a home on Britain’s coveted “Mercury Prize” short list. With the intricate themes and concepts behind her first two albums, her stripped down work on The Haunted Man is a bit of a departure.
“I felt like it was important to present something un-photoshopped and not messed about with. There’s no makeup, it’s just a very raw image, a quite intimate image,” Khan says. “That’s how I think it serves a lot of different aspects of femininity, and not just a one-dimensional kind of sexual representation. Also, the dynamic between me and the man is what’s interesting. The different questions that could be raised as to what that relates to -- I’d like there to be some discussion about that.” With an impressive new record under her belt, the album cover won’t be the only thing worth discussing. Keep up with Bat For Lashes at www.batforlashes.com
“It was quite different, this record,” Khan shares over the phone from her London apartment. “I decided to just [hang around] at home, and really try to peel back some layers. To strip back the exterior things, and I suppose some of the more far-fetched concepts and characterbased stuff. I tried to really reveal some things that are much more intimate, and honest, and raw.” The Haunted Man is a natural progression for Khan, whose growth on the musical effort is apparent. Deep piano ballads like “Laura” evoke emotion from the listener, while curiously flirtatious tracks like “All Your Gold” equip the album with flavor. One of the most striking aspects of the record is the courageous album art, where Khan matches the stripped down feel of The Haunted Man –quite literally– by posing in the nude, draped in a full-grown man.

Hip Hop Artists
MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS M
By Gwen Connors
acklemore (Ben Haggerty) and Ryan Lewis have been on a three-year journey to independently create a hip-hop album that is shaping up to be one of 2012’s elites.
What does it take for a project to go from a small grassroots movement to #1 on iTunes and debute at #2 on the billboard charts? A loyal fan base and relentless devotion to their music. The duo’s single off their debut full-length album The Heist, “Same Love” supports marriage equality and earned high profile praise from Ellen DeGeneres who tweeted about the pair, applauding their hard work and support through the track and picturesque video Lewis produced. Just when their Cinderella story seemingly couldn’t get any better, every show on their world tour sold out, with U.S. dates on par to do the same. All of this has surmounted to what producer Lewis shares is a “A dream come true.” Macklemore (Haggerty) is the storytelling creative lyricist while Lewis is the producer and architect of all the extraordinary sounds that create the backbone to their music. Although each has their trade, they collaborate like a well-oiled machine turning out progressive music, creating top of the line videos and even a clothing line. Each song on The Heist has its own flavor and flow. Songs such as “Same Love” have an Americana feel, whereas “Cowboy Boots” has a beat created out of banjos and 808s. Turning up the volume and pulse is with the anthemic “Can’t Hold Us” which initiates serious head bobbing. “It’s special that Ben and I come from such different backgrounds musically. I think that he has been a devoted hip hop listener since he started listening to music and I started off in rock and dance.” Lewis says. “And as I got into producing I started listening to everything. I think that kind of pallet of influence that goes into making each one of these songs is a wide one.” Being an independent artist in a world seemingly run by mainstream labels is no easy task. Many grassroots artists try to create a name and a success story, and can’t seem to make the interchange that is necessary to gain the notoriety. With the help of their followers known as the “Shark Face Gang” and hometown supporters in Seattle they have blasted apart the glass ceiling that holds so many independents down. “Being an independent artist debuting on the Billboard charts is really special and unusual in terms of truly doing it all yourself,” says Lewis. “It’s been something that you can’t anticipate. It’s a dream come true, what any artist would hope for. We’ve been very lucky.”

Big Gigantic Bring an Experience of Massive Proportions
B
ig Gigantic formed in the musical frontier of Colorado and are winning over audiences with their lively stage show, creative new sound, and completely free music. Electronic beats and big bass are combined with the masterful saxophone playing of Dominic Lalli and the outstanding drum patterns of Jeremy Salken to produce a whole new brand of musical innovation. NiteGuide Magazine: Acting as a major influence to the Funk, Soul and Jazz movement of EDM culture, how do you continue to separate yourself from more traditional electronic music? Dominic Lalli: You know, I guess that’s just what we kind of have been trying to do all along. I think we just like to mix a lot of different styles together into our own and keep it fresh and unique in this electronic world. NGM: Where does the influence behind the Big Gigantic sound come from? DL: Everything from classical music up to more funky-type stuff like Herbie Hancock. Funk and soul have always been a major influence, even more modern funk and electronic stuff still highly influences us and we try to fit it all in there. NGM: So what’s your secret? With only two members to the band, how does it all come together and operate? DL: Well basically I do all the production and music writing. Jeremy is just a huge influence on my writing because we play so much together and then of course he also does the live drum situation. As far as Big Gigantic as a whole, there’s quite a bit that goes on behind the scenes for it all to work. Fortunately we have a cool team of people to make it all happen and we’re having a blast doing it. NGM: What should first time attendees expect from a Big G show? DL: Wow. [Laughs] Just a raging dance party. We always tend to bring a pretty fun light show and a lot of good energy, that’s for sure. NGM: You guys seem to be a touring machine at the moment, what has been your most memorable tour or festival played? DL: Well, we did just have a really, really fun summer. I mean, we got to play Electric Forest, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Outside Lands, it’s been pretty insane. We’ve been super lucky to bring our rig around and play some really awesome spots. This summer’s really been quite the game changer for us. NGM: One word to describe the upcoming year for Big Gigantic? DL: Oh, BIG for sure. Don’t miss out. ropkick Murphys take pride in being a band of the people. After fifteen years of Irish tinged, blue-collar punk rock, conviction to their music keeps fans coming back for more.
Rock Band
“You know what you’re going to get with us, and it draws no-nonsense types of people. It always has.” - Matt Kelly
Throughout their career, the Massachusetts natives have blazed a trail for fired up, sing-along crowds to follow, and show no signs of slowing. The bands eighth studio album, Signed and Sealed in Blood, consists of twelve songs rooted in Murphy-style sound accented with a rock edge. Due to the early release of the first single “Rose Tattoo” and circulation of unreleased material via YouTube live performances, drummer Matt Kelly notes that the reception to the new music has been exceptionally warm. With a heavy dose of Boston in his voice, Kelly shares, “There’s no real formula to what we’ve got, we’ve just done it the way we’ve always done it. Take the reigns and done what we could to make the best songs we can, singing about things that mean a lot to us. I think that’s very attractive to people.” “Rose Tattoo” is not only gaining attention for its early release, its attracting fan interest due to an opportunity for die-hards to become involved with the album art. Loyal fans have been known to tattoo band names and song lyrics on their bodies, but few bands pay homage to the life-long endorsement. Kelly explains that fans who have an interpretation of a “Rose Tattoo” (or any lyrics from the song) inked on their body can send in photos for use in the album images, consequently becoming part of the group’s history. “It will be a permanent thing on them, but a permanent thing for us too. If albums are still around in a hundred years, they’ll still be [a part of us] in a hundred years. It’s oddly humbling and a real honor to have people that are so dedicated to us.” It’s hard not to admire a band that can rally that sort of dedication. However, attending a live show may shed some light on the subject. Keep up www.dropkickmurphys.com or catch them live at The Observatory on November 12th.

September IN REVIEW: FEATURED EVENTS Avicii Invades Santa Monica Santa Monica Civic Center [Los Angeles] By Electra Keller | Photos by Matt Copely Tim Bergling, better known as Avicii, Prince of the EDM phenomena, invaded the Santa Monica Civic Center on Saturday September 15th with an unrelenting and vivacious set. This event was the second night out of three total in Santa Monica for the Le7els tour. Even though Avicii’s set lasted nearly three hours, the crowd never backed down and continued to bounce to the massive beats and boisterous bass well into the night. The acoustics sounded superb and smooth, making the music nearly angelic. The visuals on stage were amazing. The multi-colored directional lighting along with laser lights mixed with 3D visuals over the wavy LED screens definitely enhanced the overall experience of the show. Avicii himself was placed right on top of a monolithic human head where he was seen fist pumping and doing what he does best; making music. When the Swedish Producer/DJ made his grand entrance, crowds flocked to the pit for a closer view where numerous cell phones lit up as Avicii opened up with “Fade into Darkness.” Other favorites of the evening included “Sunshine” and “Silhouettes” (Avicii’s new single), but the most astounding moment of the night was when the mega hit “Le7els” played for the grand finale. This particular anthem had nearly the entire audience chanting the song from start to finish.
Fresh Music From Gaslamp Killer The Mayan [Los Angeles]
By Justin Olsen | Photos by Brian Brown
San Diego born William Bensussen, AKA Gaslamp Killer, celebrated the release of his first album on Brainfeeder Records, “Breakthrough,” with a night encompassing raw and unhinged energy. Presented by the Red Bull Music Academy, The Mayan in Los Angeles filled itself with creativity, psychedelic beats, and a vast amount of underground hip-hop lovers. Beginning the night with mellow, mind-bending melodies, DJ Nobody, Computer Jay and J-Rocc took to the stage, creating beats on the fly within their DJ sets. Adrian Younge & Venice Dawn acted as an intermission to the bass-filled evening, sending the listeners on a journey through space and time with their tripped-out, blues inspired rock. Vocal performers joined as their performance drew the crowd closer to the stage. Gaslamp Killer took on the venue as his own house party, running rampant around the crowd, announcing his special guests and simply enjoying the celebration. Eprom warmed up the tables before the unannounced, but not unexpected, Flying Lotus, busted out four completely new tunes that simply destroyed the dance floor. The energy of the night exploded from the crowd and the tension released from everyone’s bodies. Following up his top two favorite producers, Gaslamp Killer took control unleashing his new music for the first time live. His signature dance moves and energy are things that not all humans possess and served as the highlight to the night. Daedelus came out to close with a blend of bass heavy and free-flowing world music that acted as a perfect closer to the evening.

Treasure fingers Extravaganza YOST Theater [Santa Ana]
Photos and Story by Christina Montaldo The Yost is quickly becoming one of the staple music venues in Orange County, and on the night of September 29th, hosted an event that left guests talking for days. DJ Treasure Fingers played at the historic venue, and made quite an impression on attendees. A completely packed room of fans came out that Thursday night for an unforgettable show. The evening was an assortment of talent that included opening DJs, live musicians, go-go dancers and arealists. The beautiful work of the arealists (suspending from ribbons and cascading down from the ceiling) brought a whole new aspect of entertainment to the night. There was a distinct vibe that carried all throughout the Yost, producing only good spirits and enthralled smiles thanks to theatrics of the event. But more importantly, there was the amazing music from Treasure Fingers. The DJ and producer has a way with both original and remixed tracks that keeps people energetic and on the dance floor. His “Nu Disco” sound is contagious and fun, thrilling party goers with a sound that’s curiously both nostalgic and fresh. Overall the night was a giant success, and one more show to ensure the Yost’s spot in EDM glory.

FYF Festival Expands To Two Days
I
f the music festival season is coming to a close, don’t tell that to LA! Braving the dust and the sun, Southern Californians hit the FYF Fest at Los Angeles State Historic Park September 1st and 2nd. For the first time in the festival’s nine-year run, it featured not one, but two days of heavy line-ups serving up some of the hottest music from across the country. Concert-goers arrived Saturday to four venue stages strewn across the park, along with plenty of food vendors and a carnival game area laid out for what promised to be an amazing weekend. Fans seeking refuge from the hot sun could be found in tent-covered beer gardens or cooling off at one of the watermisting stands throughout the venue. Once settled in, the unanimous agenda became deciding which bands to see. Fortunately, the line-up schedule was rearranged at the last minute to accommodate simultaneous set times. The fest kicked off just after noon, when bands like White Arrows took the stage. As the day went on, it seemed like much of the fest was a matter of getting from one stage to the next. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Future Islands battled for fans before most split between Sleigh Bells, James Blake, and Purity Ring. As the evening fell and the masses settled in, huge crowds gathered to watch headliners M83 perform. The hugely famous French group took the stage to hundreds of smiling fans looking for (and getting!) a playfully upbeat set to close out day one of FYF. The threat of a distant smoke cloud in the San Gabriel Mountains wasn’t enough to keep fans from pushing through the early afternoon to see Against Me!, whose lead singer Laura Jane Grace (formerly Thomas Gabel), delivered a much-anticipated and hard rocking performance. Nicholas Jaar played shortly afterwards on a nearby tented stage, dropping jaws with his phenomenal set.

Sunday then closed out with a series of tough choices, including picking between Yeasayer and Twin Shadow; two heavy-hitters whose set times seemed unable to avoid a collision. Another was opting for The Faint or Beirut, two completely different but equally incredible performances. FYF Fest cut it close with a nearlyoverwhelming venue lineup, but all in all the event was hugely successful and certain to become an LA music fest staple for years to come.

Thrilling Collaborations at iHeartRadio Music Festival
i
By Justin Olsen | Photos courtesy of iHeartRadio “Sweet Thing” and “Nothing Compares 2 U.” The festival brought a new level of interaction for the audience by providing programmed, multicolored iHeartRadio LED wristbands, which flashed to performances. The collaborations continued throughout the night with superstars rotating in and out of performances, keeping everyone on their toes with the anticipation of the next celebrity appearance.
Ryan Seacrest kicked off the festival Friday, introducing performances by artists No Doubt, Miranda Lambert, Bon Jovi, Jason Aldean, Lil Wayne, Swedish House Mafia, Usher, Green Day and Rihanna. A great deal of attention at the beginning of the night went to the duet performed by No Doubt & P!nk, “Just A Girl”, which seemed to perfectly unite these two quirky pop-divas. Lil Wayne switched up the styles by declaring: “I am your hip-hop fix for tonight, so excuse all the cuss words,” before turning the place entirely upside down with his catchy urban flow and heavy beats. Creating massive buzz on the first evening was the legendary Swedish House Mafia, arriving in their three-tiered spaceship DJ booth sporting their signature electro-style sounds and dazzling lightshow. Later the threesome was joined by Usher to perform the live debut of their new hit song, “Euphoria.”
iHeartRadio Music Festival truly is the place to be for incredible entertainment, thrilling collaborations and exciting special guest appearances.
HeartRadio Music Festival rocked MGM Grand in Las Vegas for its second year in a row, celebrating with over ten hours of back-to-back diverse performances from some of the biggest talent in radio history. Selling out in just eight minutes, the Garden Arena at the MGM Grand filled itself with big budget productions, mind-blowing collaborations, and just a touch of controversy, creating one truly triumphant weekend.
The festivities continued Saturday night with P!nk, Brad Paisley, Calvin Harris, Enrique Iglesias, Mary J. Blige, Taylor Swift, Linkin Park, Deamau5, Aerosmith, and Pitbull. One of the biggest surprises of the entire event was Mary J. Blige’s announcement of her special friend, Prince, joining her on stage to perform

Album Review
By Heidi Darby
Sunflower Dead are resurrecting a form of rock that’s hard to come by these days. The myriad of musicians – spawned from members of Droid and Two Hit Creeper – fused to form a new band that couples hard-hitting rock with skilled musicianship. Handling vocal, accordion, and keyboard duties is vocalist Michael del Pizzo who fronts the metal saturated five-piece. Bassist Luis Gascon, guitarists Jim “Jaboo” Amen, Jamie Teissere, and drummer Jimmy Schultz round out the group who recently released their debut self-titled album. The leading track, and initial single off the record, “Make Me Drown” is fueled by vocals from del Pizzo who swings in and out of sinister melodies and metal growl. The band’s surprising cover of “Every Breath You Take” serves as an anchor of familiarity for first time listeners, while paying homage to the great classic rock the group draws subtle inspiration from. Guitarist Jaboo laments and inspires on this reinterpreted classic, breathing edgy life into the rock ballad that now satisfies metal-thirsty listeners. Other standout tracks on the album include a ripper called “Wasted” and the full-bodied introspective track, “Denial.” After earning the honor of Revolver Magazine’s album of the week, Sunflower Dead are charging forward to make their mark, now on tour with HURT and Smile Empty Soul.
Keep up with Sunflower Dead at www.sunflowerdead.com .
