White Noise

OUT OF BODY (AND MECHANICAL) EXPERIENCES by THOMAS GRECO, PUBLISHER

As I sit down to write this column, there are so many thoughts going through my head. Like most of you, I have no idea what the world will be like each day during these crazy, crazy times. But THIS is not the place to come to if you are looking for commentary on the state of the world, the industry or this FU**ED UP virus. This is a place to take your mind off all of it for a few minutes. My job is to try and make you laugh and smile, and I will continue to do my best. I have chosen to stay as positive and hopeful as possible during all of this, so I try and limit the amount of news I watch and read. Like many of you, I use an Amazon Echo “Alexa” as a wake-up alarm. Naturally, when the alarm went off last week, I rolled over and said, “Alexa, snooze.” Alexa responded, “News?” and then proceeded to start reading all of

the latest COVID-19 updates. I picked my head up off the pillow. “No news! Snooze!” She kept reading. “Alexa, stop!” She kept reading. I hit every button and shook the damn thing. She just kept on reading. Finally, I grabbed the device, yanked it out of the wall and said, “Snooze, motherfu**er! Snooze!” Sometimes, you just have to laugh, right? As someone who has always slept late, waking up or getting woken up has always caused problems for me. I grew up in a ranch house where every room was on one floor. Luckily, the kids’ bedrooms were in the back of the house, so I didn’t hear much for the first decade or so of my life. Those were the glory days! But then my brother had kids, and they LOVED to run up and

down the long hallway connecting our bedrooms. So every Saturday and Sunday – PRIME SLEEP LATE DAYS (I’m talking not getting up until 3:30pm4pm!) – I’d be a good six hours into REM sleep and I’d hear “boom boom boom boom” around noon. It sounded like 100 pairs of tiny feet running and banging on the floor just inches away on the other side of the wall. I’d jump up and pound my fist on the wall as hard as I could. Then, I’d hear whispering and laughing and, of course, my brother’s big mouth: “Get your ass out of bed, you lazy bastard.” I wrapped the pillow around my head and raged. It was no use. I could never go

back to sleep. And even if I did, I would hear “boom boom boom boom” five minutes later. It never stopped! Up and down, up and down. Christ, I hated those kids. When I would get up and they would finally leave hours later, I would plead my case to my dad. My old-old-old-school Italian dad. “Dad, can you please keep them in the kitchen until I get up?” Old-old-old school dad didn’t even put the newspaper down. “Dad????” “Son, do you want [some Italian slang word I can pronounce but have no idea how to spell]?” “No, dad, I don’t want a slap across the face.” Case closed. This went on for the next decade or so. And boy, did I resent those kids. And don’t judge me! He had SIX of them! Funnily enough, as I finally matured, those kids became almost as close to me as my own. We are still as close as ever. When I moved out of that house, I finally had the chance to sleep as late as I wanted on weekends. No kids running up and down the halls. No brother yelling at me. Or so I thought. Growing up in a big house with a big yard tends to isolate you from a lot of things. Like lawnmowers. Dogs barking. People talking. When you move out on your own into a normal

house, you learn fast that the sound of little feet should have been welcomed. Gil, my neighbor to the right, loved his lawn. Loved it so much he played with it Every. Single. Day. At 8am. Lawnmowers, leaf blowers, branch cutters. The pain in the ass could have opened up his own Home Depot. My house was a cape, so there was nowhere to go. My bedroom was at the front of the house about 10 feet away from Gil’s garage. I tried to move to the living room (which was about two feet away), but that sure didn’t help. The neighbors on the other side (I never even knew their names in the 10 years I lived there) had a pair of fake dogs. By fake dogs, I mean those tiny little suckers that just yap and yap all night and day even though they were in their owners’ arms half the time. I guess they would call them comfort dogs today. Back then, the only comfort I would have gotten from them was if my German Shepherd broke off his chain and ate them. I finally moved to a bigger house in 1998. Thankfully, our bedroom was on the second floor away from any yapping dogs, lawnmowers or other noise. Or so I thought. This house has a wonderful backyard, a big living room, a playroom and a finished basement that covered the length of the house. But where do you think my kids liked to bring their friends and play? PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE by JERRY MCNEE

Keeping Busy during Quarantine

As I write this message, everyone is in the grip of a situation that none of us could have anticipated and prepared for. Our neighbors in New York are currently suffering the worst, and all of us in the Garden State should be doing what we can to stay safe and healthy. Of course, many of us also have businesses to run, and we’re facing rules and conditions that seem to be changing by the day. Even if the coronavirus situation resolves itself today and is all over by the time you read this message, the disruption we have already experienced will have longlasting effects on our industry. Fortunately, there is a silver lining to all of this. As work slows down, we’re being given an opportunity to focus on areas in our businesses that are often overlooked or pushed aside. There are moments every day in this industry when we look at things piling up and think, “There is not enough time in the day, but there’s always tomorrow.” Then, tomorrow rolls around…and we’re saying the same thing all over again. Now is the time to deal with these things. At my shop, we’re actively catching up on inhouse training and reorganizing. We’re also paying close attention to our internal safety and equipment protocols and OSHA compliance. At the same time, everyone here is

conducting business with Lysol in hand, spraying everything down throughout the course of the day. We have purchased extra industry-related cleaning and health supplies and are making sure that everything that is touched here on a regular basis is maintained in the safest way possible. These precautions will be in place at our shop long after this is all over, and our daily operations will be better for it. It’s difficult to see the positives in what we’re all going through right now, but there are ways to use it to our advantage. On a related note, I’d like to thank our exhibitors and sponsors for sticking by AASP/NJ during this challenging time and signing on to be a part of our rescheduled NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show this August. Our industry needs to work together now more than ever, and we look forward to using NORTHEAST as a way to celebrate our resilience and survival. We’re all struggling in some way right now, but this is also the time to demonstrate just how strong and committed we can be when faced with such a powerful obstacle. Let’s continue to support one another and show what we can accomplish as a true collision repair community. NJA

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE by CHARLES BRYANT

COVID-19: AASP/NJ

Automotive Industry Update In these trying times, one of the benefits AASP/NJ offers to our members has become more valuable than ever before. When the COVID-19 crisis took hold, AASP/NJ’s Hot Line lit up and hasn’t stopped since. The first real panic call came when a Bergen County official issued an executive order that went well beyond the one issued by Governor Murphy by calling for repair and mechanical shops to shut down and stay shut down until further notice – even though the Governor’s executive order did not go that far. Right behind the first call came another from a Bergen County-based AASP/NJ member, and more followed almost immediately. We immediately jumped into action seeking the answer to the critical question of which order our members should follow – and what might happen should we follow the wrong one before getting a solid response. Needless to say, it was virtually impossible to directly get through to the Governor or the Bergen County official. Therefore, we tried to reach an assistant from both offices and eventually expanded our efforts to New Jersey senators, assemblymen/women and every other state official available. We soon received word that the executive order from Bergen County set to take effect on March 17 had been

extended or postponed to March 21 at 8am in order to provide clarity to the document. However, by that time, we had already discovered that there was a conflicting clause in the Governor’s executive order: No municipality, county or any other agency or political subdivision of this state shall enact or enforce any order, rule, regulation, ordinance or resolution which will or might in any way conflict with any of the provisions of this executive order, or which will in any way interfere with or impede its achievement. We made the argument to anyone we could get to listen that the Bergen County official could not legally issue an order that was in conflict with the one issued by the Governor. One senator somewhat agreed with us, but he said he was unsure. However, he did say that when there is a conflict of this nature, he would normally recommend that one follow the Governor’s rule. He suggested that we speak with an attorney after assuring me that he would look into it and get back to me if he could get an update. As we continued to contact every official who we thought might be in a position to assist us in getting an answer to the questions we had, the calls from our members continued to roll in. Eventually, we got word that

I ask all AASP/NJ members to be thoughtful of each other and stand ready to help one another in this trying time.

16 | New Jersey Automotive | April 2020

the Bergen County official had rescinded his executive order at the request of Governor Murphy, whose administration stated that the only closures that could be enforced were the ones he issued. What a relief, we thought. However, before we could get a bulletin out to our members about the Bergen County issue, yet another matter lit up the Hot Line. This time, it had to do with another (and even stronger) executive order that the Governor had just issued. The question now being asked by our members was, “Is a collision repair shop considered an ‘essential business?’” The answer seems to depend on where one finds it. To explain the problem, we found an article via a major news station in Las Vegas that defined auto repair and trucking service centers as “essential” services. Another search found an article from Business Insider that defined gas stations and repair shops as “essential” businesses, but these sources were not strong enough for us to take a substantial stand on, so we kept going. Eventually, we were able to locate an entity that we felt comfortable relying on. It was a memorandum issued by the US Department of Homeland Security that deemed “automotive repair” as an “essential” business. Although the memorandum noted that it was meant to serve as an advisory guide, it was specifically issued by the US Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) to address issues on the identification of essential critical workers during COVID-19 response. As such, we felt strongly that we could rely on an agency as strong and important as the US Department of Homeland Security (CISA). We issued a bulletin to our members to use or refer to if/when they were ever challenged on their decision to stay open as an “essential” business (at least during the hours the Governor’s executive order allowed). AASP/NJ members can visit the Department’s website at dhs.gov for more information.

With that said, members of AASP/NJ should be aware that things are changing by the minute. The “essential” business status can also change at any time – or an even stronger order could be issued that would require more businesses to close because COVID-19 cases are still growing at press time. Members of AASP/NJ can trust that the association will stay on top of things as they progress and are here to provide answers to as many questions and deal with as many issues as possible during this difficult time. Many of our members have asked questions about COVID-19 scenarios and benefits available to their employees. We’ve found great information that goes into explaining available benefits and the circumstances that need to take place in order for them to be applicable. The NJ Department of Banking and Insurance has issued a bulletin to all entities it licenses or regulates encouraging them to take into consideration the difficulties consumers have endured (and will continue to endure) until the spread of COVID-19 is controlled and those affected begin to receive regular payments and reimbursement for monies past due. The Department specifically encourages the entities and individuals it regulates to assist those affected by the current conditions by taking actions including (but not limited to) relaxing due dates, extending grace periods and waving late fees/penalties. The full bulletin can be viewed on the Department of Banking and Insurance website at dobi.nj.gov. This site also contains great and helpful information as well as links to other websites where additional information can be found. The New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development website (nj.gov/labor) also has a wealth of information on employers’ responsibilities and the rules pertaining to employee benefits, including earned sick leave, unemployment insurance, temporary disability family leave insurance and workers’ compensation. Before I conclude, I want to make

a request of our members who are able to assist. Two of our members were contacted by health agencies dealing with COVID-19 and asked to help in their attempt to locate any excess supplies of N95 masks. Those members then contacted me to request that I put out a notice to our members to see if any would be willing to donate some of these masks. Apparently, collision shops often use the same type of mask that health workers need to wear when in close contact with patients (especially at the present time with the COVID-19 pandemic going on). The more I thought about it, the bigger the list of items collision shops often use (like Tyvek suits, eye protectors, surgical gloves and even regular masks) came to mind. One of the members was contacted by Jenny Collins of Atlantic Health System, who was reaching out to see if the member or anyone they knew might have some masks to donate. If any AASP/NJ member might be willing to donate any of the items I just mentioned – regardless of how small the donation might be – Jenny can be contacted at (973) 971-7106 or Jenny.Collins@atlantichealth.org. I would ask that any member in the position to do so please contact her (or any health organization in your own area) to donate any available items. You can also contact me at (732) 9228909, and I will arrange to have them picked up and delivered to the appropriate parties. I ask all AASP/NJ members to be thoughtful of each other and stand ready to help one another in this trying time. I have often included some words in my articles that AASP/NJ members – and the entire world, for that matter – need to hear and adhere to now more than ever: “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” We don’t have to hold hands or even be close to one another physically to stand united. We will get through this, and it is times like this that make us realize just how important everyone is to one another. I hope to see you all soon once we can schedule another great AASP/NJ meeting. Stay safe! NJA New Jersey Automotive | April 2020 | 17

Fast-forward to today, and I have personally participated in all but two minor storms in the last 38 years. About 20 years ago, I noticed some media reference “global warming” when speaking about the run of relatively warm weather we were experiencing. It was plausible and it fit the situation then. However, when the winters turned colder and we received much more snow, the media used a new phrase: “Climate change.” I needed to know average snowfall for contractual reasons, so I crunched the numbers using my own data, which I knew was accurate. Upon doing so, I saw that snowfall over the last 18 years was up 15 to 20 percent.

Schoolhouse Blizzard: January 12, 1888 During January, western Canada is very cold. The days are short with minimal sun in which to heat the earth during the day, and the long nights allow the heat to escape, keeping temperatures very low. This area is actually the source of much of the cold weather we experience in the tristate area. During late 1887 and early 1888, the “chilling fields” of Canada were particularly intense, and cold engulfing much of midwest Canada and the US with very cold temperatures – many below zero degrees and ranging from -12° F to -41° F. This cold air eventually traveled east, and a low pressure cell brought warm air from the Texas Gulf Coast area. Depending on location, the morning temperatures on January 12, 1888 were 30° F to 52° F warmer than the prior morning. Around late morning, high winds ushered in

LOCAL NEWS by Alana Bonillo

Setting the Stage:

AASP/NJ Seminar Focuses on Maximizing Estimate Values You have to set the stage for what you want. Roughly 100 collision repairers from around the Garden State heard this message loud and clear during “Estimating Accuracy Essentials: Part 2,” a recent seminar presented by AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee (Ultimate Collision; Edison) and John Niechwiadowicz of QLC, Inc. at two sessions at the Hilton Garden Inn’s Springfield and Hamilton locations. The discussions were sponsored by AASP/NJ, Central Paint, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Innovative Solutions & Technology, Metropolitan Car-o-liner and Reliable Automotive Equipment. The follow-up to a course presented by McNee and Niechwiadowicz last summer, this second installment dove into the steps repairers need to take when blueprinting a vehicle for repair. Stressing that tracking every aspect of a job is key to conducting a successful negotiation, they led an interactive discussion focused on the three main components of formulating an accurate estimate: Disassembly for repair, OEM repair procedures and proper documentation. Delving into the critical need to conduct a full disassembly for repair, the speakers presented data to demonstrate the importance of relating factors such as touch time. Niechwiadowicz explained that increasing touch time is a benefit to reducing stress and chaos on the shop floor and will lead to increased profits. To get to that point, shops need to take a look at their in-house conditions and make sure all things are in order. This includes making sure technicians have access to everything they need to begin the repair. If that is not the case, technicians will hit a roadblock and have to stop the process, slowing things down. McNee urged attendees to fully dissemble damaged vehicles prior to repair. “We had partially torn down cars in the past that we said

were totaled, and the insurance company would come in and say ‘I don’t see it as totaled,’ and [we were] back in the action again. We’ve seen this over and over...You learn the hard way. So, when insurance companies question me about tearing it down 100 percent, we have to [do it]. We have no choice. We got somebody coming in with a tape measure, and they are measuring out that dent. At the end of the day, who is the professional? Who is fixing the car? What liability do they have? They are just writing it on paper. You need to do your job.”

Continued on page 46

John Niechwiadowicz (QLC., Inc.) urged attendees to perform 100 percent disassembly on each repair.

AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee discussed ways to improve estimating and negotiating practices.

Safe & Strong:

COVER STORY by Joel Gausten

2020 Rescheduled to August AASP/NJ is committed to taking action for the safety and betterment of the industry it serves. This was proven in early March when the association became one of the first associations in the country to address the growing coronavirus pandemic head-on by rescheduling the 2020 NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show from March 20-22 to August 21-23 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center (MEC) in Secaucus. “When [New York] Governor Cuomo announced [on March 7] that they were declaring a state of emergency, we immediately began discussions regarding this year’s NORTHEAST show,” explains AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee. “We were pretty sure that New Jersey would soon follow, and so first thing [on the morning of March 9], we began reaching out to vendors and member shops to see what their thoughts were. Needless to say, we weren’t surprised when everyone we contacted felt that it would be best to reschedule the show for later in the year. Our top priority is always the safety of our attendees, exhibitors and supporters, and we felt that we just couldn’t take the chance that someone

30 | New Jersey Automotive | April 2020

might become infected at our show.” New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency later that day, while President Trump did the same on the national level five days later. AASP/NJ had the NORTHEAST backup date of August since the outbreak began. “Thankfully, the MEC had a few open dates available for us to choose from. We wanted to make sure it was far enough in the future so that the COVID19 danger would pass, but not so far as to be too close to SEMA. We also felt that August would work for us since NORTHEAST is predominantly a ‘driveto’ show as opposed to a ‘fly-to’ show.” McNee was quick to add that AASP/NJ is focused on the continued health and safety of those who attend and exhibit at the show. “There wouldn’t be any other reason other than an act of God that we would reschedule. But this was all about keeping everyone who comes to the show safe and worry-free, and we want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding. This year is an anomaly, but that won’t stop the NORTHEAST show from continuing the amazing growth it has maintained since we

returned to New Jersey back in 2009. Next year, we will return to the third week in March as always.” The Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association (WMABA) will continue its support of AASP/NJ and NORTHEAST by providing its muchanticipated Collision Professional Repairer Education Program (Collision P.R.E.P.) on the new show dates. “In business, pivoting is required for success,” comments WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “Oftentimes, staying put is the worst decision when faced with adversity. Even though we had concern for moving to the summer date, there is now a host of new opportunities open to us to bring even more value and more reason to join us.” Despite the disruption to the show’s original dates and growing concerns over the coronavirus situation, exhibitors and other participants are standing by ready to return to Secaucus this summer. One of NORTHEAST’s most avid supporters, longtime exhibitor Metropolitan Car-o-liner immediately pledged to participate at the rescheduled event. “We have products that don’t lend

themselves well to customers looking online or in articles for them,” explains Metropolitan Car-o-liner President Dave Demarest, Jr. “There is still the hands-on technical experience that’s needed. NORTHEAST still gives us the opportunity to show our latest and greatest tools; that is why we continue to go year after year.” Dave Gruskos of Reliable Automotive Equipment is looking forward to exhibiting and presenting at NORTHEAST in support of his industry peers. He encourages them to use the current downtime to their advantage as they plan to attend NORTHEAST in a few short months. “Slow times are when people should be concentrating on the inner workings, tooling and procedures of their businesses so that the minute the switch is turned on and everything is back to normal, they can really capitalize on the situation. We need the NORTHEAST show for that. “As a business owner, nobody

wants to see an employee stand around,” Gruskos adds. “You should be taking this opportunity to get them educated in as many facets of the industry as possible so that when they do go to NORTHEAST and get state-ofthe-art seminars, they’ll really understand that they’ve learned a lot of things they can put to practical use.” Of course, moving NORTHEAST to August has the potential bonus of serving as a warm celebration once current hardships are behind us and we can experience a more united industry. “Who wouldn’t want to be in New Jersey in the summertime?” McNee asks. “At NORTHEAST, you get the best in collision industry education and training. You get to see the best in equipment, paint and tools...And you’re three minutes away from the brand-new American Dream indoor theme park, ski slope and water park. You’re also 45 minutes from the Jersey shore!” While the pandemic has put a question mark on more immediate

events, McNee and the AASP/NJ Board of Directors are hopeful that the extra months will allow for the health crisis to be resolved and give NORTHEAST attendees the chance to experience the largest regional show in the country with confidence and comfort. “We jumped on this immediately to get ahead of it, and we made the right decision. The exhibitors and attendees are all of the same mindset: Better safe than sorry. The last thing we wanted to do was continue to spread this. We can’t say it would happen, but doubt is more than enough reason to say we did the right thing.” Pre-registered NORTHEAST attendees will not need to re-register, as badge data will be carried over to the new dates of August 21-23. For updates and information on NORTHEAST, please continue to visit the official event website, aaspnjnortheast.com, and visit AASP/NJ online at aaspnj.org. NJA

MECHANICAL CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Continued from page 20

another cold front. Huron in South Dakota reported 42mph winds at 11:45am and 57mph at 12:15pm. Gusts were up to 80mph at 1:30pm. The snow began to fall; even through midday, the sky darkened and visibility was all but eliminated by the combination of snowfall and winds relaunching snow on the ground. People reported not being able to see buildings across the street. Temperatures dropped dramatically. For example, Helena in Kansas dropped 55 degrees in roughly four and a half hours. Because the day started out relatively warm after a prolonged cold spell, people had ventured far from home and children had gone to school without proper attire for what was to follow. This blizzard made the shortest trip outside difficult and dangerous. Since the storm began midday, teachers had to make a decision about how to handle the children in

class. Some teachers chose to release the children early, while others waited for the normal day to end before releasing them into a raging blizzard. Many of these children perished on the trip home, hence the name “Schoolhouse Blizzard.” Fortunately, some teachers chose to detain students in the schools until the following day (which was the right choice). Overall, the students kept in the schoolhouses fared much better and returned to their families the next day – hungry but safe. It is estimated that between 230 to 500 people (many being children) died in this storm, while others received frostbite. Here are some factors that caused this disaster: • The suddenness of the blizzard caught many unprepared, in part due to the relatively warm temperature that day.

• The timing of the storm, which began midday while the children were in school. • The Army Signal Corps in charge of weather forecasting and dissemination was not up to the task • The poor and inadequate training of the Signal Corps personnel. • A lack of communication to warn people over the vast distances. Despite the tragedy caused by the quickly changing storm, there was no mention of global warming, climate change or blame placed on politicians or lifestyles. There is one “bright spot” to this tragedy, as it received national publicity due to the number and age of victims and caused a big push to advance the field of meteorology with improvements in training and forecasting in the years to follow. COVER STORY by Joel Gausten

Coronavirus : Note: This article represents current information as of our press deadline of March 26. At that time, automotive collision repair and mechanical businesses were permitted to stay open as per Governor Phil Murphy’s March 21 executive order for “essential” businesses. We encourage our readers to follow the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and state and municipal news for the most up-to-date information on the coronavirus response in your area.

Resilience. That’s the word that comes to mind when considering the American collision repair industry’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. With the vast majority of consumers staying indoors and everything from regional events (like the NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show and the annual New Jersey SkillsUSA competition) to

The Industry Reacts

national gatherings such as the April Collision Industry Conference (CIC) and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists’ (SCRS) Annual Elections and Repairer Roundtable either canceled or postponed for the foreseeable future, auto body professionals in the Garden State and beyond are bracing themselves for a future that is unpredictable at best. Thankfully, the spirit within the New Jersey industry at present is one of inspiration and innovation. With the normal ways of doing business suddenly on pause, many businesses are finding new ways to go the extra mile for customers while ensuring their workflow remains as steady as possible. As just one example, Joe Amato, Sr. of the Amato Agency has seen shops implement “curbside service” for customers in an attempt to adhere to current social distancing guidelines. “They’ll come and pick up the car and drop it back off to [customers]. They’ll sanitize the car before doing that. They can get paid over the phone instead of having customers come in.” Additionally, Amato has heard of multi-shop operators giving one employee a week an opportunity to take a day off to avoid layoffs. “That’s a pretty clever way to handle that. This way, the employee has some vacation or sick time they can take, they don’t lose their job or get laid off and [the owners] are able to survive with one less employee.” With the current health crisis, Dave Demarest, Jr. of Metropolitan Car-o-liner has quickly established alternative ways to reach the industry. “We’re focusing on getting started with as many ‘virtual’ engagements as possible, whether it’s through Facebook Live or email. We’re using what we have available to us right now.” With regular customers throughout six states, Metropolitan Car-o-liner is committed to weathering the storm and providing all that it can as the pandemic continues to unfold. “We’ve made the determination that we’re going to stay open for business. The way we have to conduct that business will be different, but we will remain open. As of now, we remain fully stocked in terms of service equipment and systems. When we see the other side of this and shops start picking up, we’ll get back to our business as usual also.” While many industry-related businesses are staying afloat by thinking outside the box, the early days of the pandemic response proved confusing and frustrating for many. As lawmakers and municipalities struggled to provide swift remedies to the emergency, many repair facilities found themselves unsure of how to react to new rules of conduct that seemed to change daily. This was especially true for shops in Bergen County, where an executive order was issued that demanded “nonessential” businesses to close down completely until further notice. This was in direct conflict to an order

issued days earlier by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who required all “non-essentialâ€? businesses (which included automotive repair/service facilities not attached to a gas station) to follow a daily 8am-to-5pm operation schedule. This gross inconsistency caused great concern for Robert Bartels, owner of Bogota Auto Body II in Bogota, who works on police and fire vehicles and seriously questioned Bergen County’s decision to still classify his business as “non-essential.â€? Fortunately for him and many other shop owners in the area, Bergen County later removed its executive order at Governor Murphy’s behest. “It was a crisis until that executive order was rescinded,â€? Bartels says. “We were thinking, ‘What are we going to do with the cars that are in the shop?’â€? AASP/NJ was quick to get involved in this executive order discrepancy, working diligently behind the scenes to

provide a sense of direction for Bergen County-based members. (An extensive overview of these activities – including work to bring much-needed clarity to the “essentialâ€? and “non-essentialâ€? business categories –  is featured in this month’s Executive Director’s Message by Charles Bryant.) Bartels credits AASP/NJ for its part in helping shops like his stay open. “That’s why we belong to the association. I can pick up the phone and call Charlie or [President] Jerry McNee. I’ve learned more in a year than in the last 25 years. Jerry and Charlie are people who care.â€? At the time of this writing, Bogota Auto Body II is maintaining a steady work schedule thanks in large part to referrals from an area dealership. “We keep our distance from each other, and we do what we have to do. We’re a small-town shop, and we still help people.â€? Aside from feeling some expected

anxiety over the current state of affairs, Bloomfield Auto Body owner and AASP/NJ Board member Anthony Trama experienced a “normal week in the first seven days following President Trump’s national emergency declaration on March 13. As things have progressed, he has implemented a strict pre- and post-repair disinfectant regiment on vehicles to protect his crew and customers. Additionally, every doorknob in the facility is regularly wiped clean. “Most of the customers who have come in have been perfectly fine. [Some of them] have had gloves and masks on. They really didn’t seem too paranoid about grabbing the door handle and picking up a pen to sign a piece of paper. Only two customers have canceled jobs at Trama’s shop as of this writing, while none of his employees are showing signs of illness.

18 USI Italia Booths and Still Counting at No. 1 Collision

When anyone has a technical question for No. 1 Collision regarding any piece of equipment from a car rack all the way to a paint booth, they ask Facilities and Equipment Manager Milford Cumberland is the person to ask. At the age of 66, he is the old wise man that holds the cards and is the information gatekeeper on every facility, as well as all of its training, tools and equipment. One of Cumberland’s job at No. 1 is overseeing the acquisition, installation and ongoing maintenance for 18 USI Italia booths. It’s an enormous investment that keeps paying for itself over and over again, and as a result, Cumberland is likely North America’s #1 expert about these Italian-made high-end spray booths. The No. 1 Collision Centre in Richmond, British Columbia invested $19 million in an impressive 70,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art location on two acres that is over the top in every way. “We call our facilities the superstars of the industry and our largest one definitely has that ‘wow’ factor,” Cumberland said. “Other shops and many of the OEMs request tours of this shop all the time and fly here from the U.S. and Europe just to see what we’re doing. When they see a dozen USI Chronotechs here set up side-by-side and full of high-end luxury vehicles, they are impressed, no doubt.” If you walked into any of the No. 1 Collision locations, you’d find primarily Teslas, Land Rovers, Jaguars, Porsches, Mercedes-Benzes, Audis, Volkswagens, MINIs, Ferraris, Maseratis and even a few Rolls Royces being repaired. Certified to work on this impressive assemblage of 10 OE certifications, No. 1 Collision works hard to stay current with the training and equipment required to make this list. CEO Rob Walker and his brother COO Scott purchased a shop in 1993 and today No. 1 Collision repairs a total of more than 1,0000 cars every month. The Walker Group of Companies have built an impressive business that includes four collision centers in Canada and one in the U.S. This MSO has invested approximately $1 million in its USI booths after acquiring their first one in 2009. When it comes to acquiring any tools, equipment or training, Walker isn’t afraid to pay for value, “We learned rather quickly that trying to cut costs isn’t the best way to go,” Rob Walker said. When we started looking at paint booths, we realized that the European ones were superior and that USI was the best. Our Chronotechs are like BMWs while some of the others are more like KIAs. We will never buy another type of paint booth, because these have proven to be superior across the board. The technology is unmatched with incredible lighting, better air movement and sturdy construction.” Cumberland agrees with Walker and is more than willing to expound on the capabilities and advantages of using USI booths, he said. “We are very impressed with the USI direct drive system and their powerful motors (15hp), and everything is tunable on-site. Some paint booths contain cheap components and in the end they’re nothing more than just cargo boxes with lights. A great booth is something you can install and then not worry about it for 20 years and that’s what we have with USI.”

Refinish Technician Ben Yi paints primarily high-end vehicles in a USI Chronotech spray booth at No. 1 Collision.

Whenever he purchases anything, Cumberland makes certain that the support that is both accessible and accountable. “We made sure that the support from USI was going to be strong, and that was one of the many things we considered before acquiring the booths,” he said. “At the very beginning, all of the USI people gave me their phone numbers, which has turned out to be a real blessing. They’re very responsive and you can tell they love what they’re doing. When I call them, especially their tech people, they are more than willing to answer all of our questions. We can’t afford to be down at any time if we want to maintain our reputation. I tell people the sign says No. 1, not No. 2.” “I always tell people that to succeed in this industry, you should never skimp on things such as air compressors and paint booths,” Cumberland said. “We’ve been very fortunate with USI and now they’re an integral part of everything we do here.” When it comes to maintenance and upkeep, Cumberland has a huge calendar that tells him what to replace and when with every USI booth. “With 18 of these babies, we have to stay on top of it, so that they will perform at a high level all the time. With USI, we don’t have to replace the filters or the intake and exhaust cubes as frequently as we would with another brand, which gives us another advantage over the competition.”

COVER STORY

LOCAL NEWS

Although the final word on this unexpected and challenging time in history has yet to be written, the collision repair community is working hard to overcome the obstacles ahead. If there’s one profession that can rise above while keeping customers safe and secure, it’s this one. As one New Jersey shop owner told us on March 20, “It’s business as usual but with cleaner hands!” NJA

“If you do not do a 100 percent disassembly for repair, you can not write a 100 percent complete repair plan,” added Niechwiadowicz. Another crucial component is researching and then following OEM procedures every single time – no exceptions. “I look at it like I’m looking up [OEM procedures] to get paid for it. I think you owe it to the customer to repair cars correctly,” shared audience member and AASP/NJ Collision Chairman Dennis Cataldo, Jr. (D&M Auto Body; Old Bridge). The major takeaway from the course was that getting paid for repairing vehicles is achieved through proper documentation where repairers build a business case that represents what they are asking for in a way that is clearly and effectively communicated. According to McNee, shops need to think outside the box with what they are seeking on their estimates. “What can we give them that they can look at and then say ‘yes’ or ‘no?’” For information on upcoming AASP/NJ meetings (including those rescheduled in response to the coronavirus outbreak), please visit aaspnj.org. OUT OF BODY (AND MECHANICAL) EXPERIENCES Continued from page 11

That’s right. Right across the hall from me in their bedrooms. No wonder I had bags under my eyes for most of my life. But then I saw it… I was browsing in Sharper Image or Brookstone, and there it was: A sound machine! It was like finding a leprechaun’s bag of gold! Here was this little device that played all kinds of noises. Rain, wind, fan, ocean, stream, “summer night” and oh my God: WHITE NOISE! It was a glorious day in the life of Thomas Greco.

Since that fateful day, I’ve been through three or four of these marvelous gizmos. Kids playing? Turn it up to four. Dogs barking? Turn up to six. Leaf blower? Now that’s a solid nine. I just turn the dial and sleep like a baby. Now, I just have to make sure Alexa doesn’t try to teach it to play the news instead. Have faith. Be positive. Stay safe. Smile and laugh. We will get through this together. NJA

Wharton Insurance Briefs A safe working environment is critical to your operation. Eye protection is one of many areas. Eye injury can come from many sources, such as flying particles, chemicals or vapors. Eye protection should be worn when workers are grinding, welding, sawing, hammering or using any type of power tool. There are four basic types of eye protection: Safety glasses (which come in prescription and non-prescription), goggles, face shields and welding helmets. If you have employees working in areas where there might be flying debris, dirt or grit, you should at least have them wear safety glasses or goggles. If they are welding or cutting, they should be wearing the proper welding helmet with a face shield. Statistics show that there are more than 2,000 eye injuries in the US each day, and 200 will result in temporary or permanent loss of vision. Ninety percent of these injuries can be prevented or lessened with the use of proper eye protection. As always, if you have any questions regarding this topic or your insurance program, please contact me.
