MESSAGE A TIME OF SOLUTIONS

This is going to be an incredible year for the collision repair community. The first quarter of 2019 has already been an exciting time for this industry. As I write this message, WMABA is finalizing the slate of presenters for the Collision Professional Repairer Education Program (Collision P.R.E.P.) at the NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show this month in Secaucus, NJ. Looking over what the association has put together, I’m thrilled to see that some of the field’s leading experts have signed on to bring their unique perspectives to the thousands of shop owners, vendors, technicians and other auto body professionals who will hit the Meadowlands Exposition Center for NORTHEAST. WMABA’s relationship with NORTHEAST’s host association – the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) – goes back years, and both parties can’t wait to further their collaboration in bringing valuable content to attendees on the East Coast and beyond. The complete schedule of events and course information on P.R.E.P. offerings are featured in this month’s issue. A few weeks ago, I joined hundreds of industry members and representatives from across the country at the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) in Palm Springs, CA. Without question, this most recent event was one of the best CICs I’ve attended since joining WMABA OFFICERS PRESIDENT

Hammer & Dolly in 2007. For this first gathering of 2019, new Chairman Jeff Peevy (AMI) formulated the agenda to include hours of in-depth inter-industry discussions on advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). This structure allowed for input from a host of new faces, some of whom are featured in our CIC coverage in this issue. It was a meaningful and highly educational morning, and I look forward to seeing where Jeff’s involvement with CIC at this level will lead over the next two years. Whether you’re hitting education events by car (like with NORTHEAST) or by plane (to attend CICs throughout the country), it is clear that the industry is offering more opportunities to grasp and train for the future than ever before. If it’s been some time since you’ve ventured out to these events – or if you’ve never gone to any of them before – this is the time. You will not be disappointed. H&D

WHAT IS YOUR “EXIT STRATEGY”? Have you planned out how you’d get out? I’m not saying it in a negative way, but rather in a “Plan A or B” kind of way. There’s been quite a few instances lately where I’ve had conversations (with people in and out of our industry) about a business being closed or sold and what that person’s plan for retirement or change looked like. In all of these instances, it was noticeable that there was a lack of planning for this to happen. They just sort of winged it at the end after the decision had been made. There’s one instance in particular where I didn’t talk to the person but read about what happened. A shop just closed its doors and left many employees, vendors and customers completely in the lurch. The news picked it up and, knowing the family personally, I was sad to hear the story. They didn’t sell; they just closed their doors and left the customers to fend for themselves with their cars. One woman had been a customer for 20 years and was just in complete shock. I can imagine that her shock equaled the pain and anguish this family went through before, during and after they shut those doors. It may have been a plan, but it certainly doesn’t appear that way at all. This seemingly successful business just abruptly ended. With all these swirling conversations, I see that many people don’t have an exit strategy until the exit is inevitable. In my own personal business, I think about it all the time. Not that I want to close my business, but what if I needed to? What if I decided tomorrow that I want to open a coffee shop – or open a yoga studio in the

Treating your business like it’s living and breathing means you’d want it to be healthy. A sick business doesn’t survive turmoil. Himalayas? I’d want to think that I had ducks in a row to sell or close it up. What would I do with my financials, employees, customers, equipment and everything else? How could they be protected through this so that I’m not leaving with a mess...or worse, shame that lingers through the rest of my life? I don’t think anyone who starts a business imagines it will be a short-term project; they see it as a lifelong endeavor. You go through so much to grow it, run it and hopefully make a wage and profit. I’ve never had a conversation with a shop owner where they say, “You know, it’s been so easy lately. I just sit on back and watch it work itself.” Those are never words said by any collision repairer, ever. Yet, all you crazy cats seem to still find joy in turning a crumpled mess into a shining beauty again. Knowing you’re all collision repair lifers, because it’s your nature to be so, still has me saying you should know what your “Plan B” would look like. Would your books be ready at any time to be looked at by a possible buyer? Would you have a lot of debt ratio? Is there healthy cash flow, savings, reinvestment in equipment or training? What does your property ownership or lease look like? How is your book of business (list of customers)? All these things can be positioned while you’re still not intending to go anywhere. It would likely save you catastrophe if you suddenly find yourself with a health crisis or other emergency. Treating your business like it’s living and breathing means you’d want it to be healthy. A sick business doesn’t survive turmoil. Just something to think about when you’re pondering over morning coffee and production schedules. H&D

Stories from WMABA facilities.

MEMBER

SPOTLIGHT ROMAN’S BODY SHOP Eric Roman was truly born to do auto body work. The youngest of six kids (three boys and three girls), he says it came down to him when his older siblings took no interest in their father’s business – Roman’s Body Shop in Martinsburg, WV. “My dad said, ‘This one is going to be a body man,’” he recalls. This prediction turned out to be right. At the young age of 11, Roman started working closely in the shop and honing his skills painting cars. By the age of 12, he had become so well versed in the trade that he soon found himself performing paintwork for a nearby shop in the evenings. But it was his family business that he was destined to work at, manage and one day take over – making collision repair his life’s work. “Once I started, I was hooked.” As to what he finds most satisfying about the business, he says he “personally like[s] to see the finished products when they are done.” James “Buster” Roman opened Roman’s Body Shop in 1959; 2019 marks its 60th anniversary. By 1986, Eric started running the business, eventually taking over the ownership when Buster passed away in 1996. The foundation of the shop’s success over the past six decades lies in the remarkable reputation Buster built throughout his career. “We’ve been around a long time, so we must be doing something right,” says Eric. “People just knew to bring their cars to my dad. I built this off his reputation.”

14

March 2019

Roman still stands by that reputation today, as he believes it’s excellent customer service that keeps people coming through the door. “We will bend over backwards, and I am always in the shop. I’m not the type of owner who is never there. I always make sure things are done right. We are ranked high with all the major insurance companies. We do good quality work, and we stand behind that.” A good reputation has led the business to grow over the years in both size and location. Originally, the shop was located at a different building in the same town with just four bays. In 1999, Roman decided to move the business to its current location at 190 Grapevine Road in Martinsburg. The new location originally featured six bays; thanks to an additional building constructed in 2005, Roman’s Body Shop now has 14, allowing them to take on more work. One of the biggest struggles Roman faces is finding good technicians. Thankful to have a solid crew - including longtime estimator Craig Gogan (15 years) and mechanic Wayne “G.” (20-plus years) he is currently looking to add two to three more members to the team. In the meantime, Roman and his seven-person staff are always keeping up with training. “A car is basically a computer now. You have to be careful with everything you do.” With challenges including technology and insurance companies having changed the collision repair industry dramatically, Roman found it important to get involved with WMABA as soon he learned the association opened its membership to West Virginia body shops. “I wanted to have a relationship with an organization that can back me up if something happened.” As for the future, Roman doesn’t foresee his own sons taking over, as both are currently pursuing other interests at college, but he doesn’t plan for the family tradition to go away anytime soon. H&D

Eric Roman is proud to be an active member of the WMABA community.

Certification and scanning.

NEWS Ford Launches New Certification Program, Releases Scanning Position Statements

Ford has announced the creation of a new, self-managed collision repair certification program. According to an official announcement, the Ford Certified Collision Network (FCCN) will support the company’s “customer-first philosophy of providing our owners with quality, safe collision repairs utilizing Ford repair procedures and original equipment parts.” The new initiative replaced the previous Ford National Body Shop Network (NBSN) in January. “Ford is dedicated to delivering collision repair solutions that meet vehicle complexity needs, which have evolved since the original network was launched, and ensure our owners have access to a network of shops that demonstrate commitment to providing quality repairs to Ford and Lincoln vehicles,” stated Ford in a prepared statement. “Our customers have told us that they value a referral for a certified collision repair shop that comes from the vehicle manufacturer over all other sources.” “We are committed to delivering quality and safe collision repairs,” added Jennifer Boyer, Ford global collision business and strategy manager. “The evolution of our collision repair certification program demonstrates this commitment and represents our desire to manage the program internally and include new benefits to certified repairers.”

Ford says that the network offers certification, access to technical repair procedures and detailed shop and inspection requirements. New program features include performance metrics, proper repair verification and access to a technical hotline. Improved certification options include specialization in advanced driver assistance systems and electric vehicles. “We are eager to build this new network and provide customers with improved access to certified collision repairers. The Ford Certified Collision Network is an evolution [that] prepares us for the future of the collision and claims industry,” said Boyer. Ford is accepting applications for certification and anticipates the network will grow by the end of 2019. For more information, go to collision.ford.com/fordcertifiedcollisionnetwork.

New Position Statements Ford’s certification program announcement coincided with the release of new Ford and Lincoln position statements on pre- and post-repair scanning. The Ford position statement is reprinted below (with the Lincoln version available online at oem1stop.com):

PRE- AND POST-DIAGNOSTIC SCANNING DURING A COLLISION REPAIR

Ford Motor Company vehicles contain many state-of-the art features that provide occupant safety and enhance the driving experience. During collision repairs, it is critical the proper function of these systems and features be restored back to pre-accident condition and performance. Ford defines a collision as damage that exceeds minor outer body panel cosmetic distortion.

All Ford Motor Company vehicles from and including model year 2010 forward involved in a collision require a pre-repair diagnostic scan during the estimation phase of a collision repair to properly identify all required repairs. During the repair process, certain modules and other system components may require calibration or initialization to properly complete the repair. Additionally, the vehicle must have a post-repair diagnostic scan completed after the vehicle has been repaired to verify that new faults have not been introduced in the course of the repair and to verify that the vehicle has been fully repaired. The following points show why a diagnostic scan is crucial to the proper repair of the vehicle:

1. Preliminary diagnostic scans provide a baseline to the condition of the systems on the vehicle and what concerns may need to be addressed during the vehicle repair plan development. 2. Not every malfunction will illuminate a malfunction warning light (MIL) or message center warning. 3. A system may require a certain number of drive or function cycles in order to set a warning light or manifest a concern. 4. Low battery voltage may allow for numerous Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) to set.

It is important to utilize Ford repair procedures for all collision repairs to ensure quality results. Ford also recommends the use of the Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) or Ford Diagnosis and Repair System (FDRS) to perform all vehicle diagnostic testing, module programing and system calibrations during collision repairs. Ford dealer-owned body shops can access service information, training and diagnostic scan tool support through the Professional Technician Society at fordtechservice.dealerconnection.com, and independent collision repairers can find information at motorcraftservice.com.

Ford Motor Company vehicles are designed and built to provide optimum fit, function, safety and structural integrity. For this reason, Ford Motor Company does not approve the use of aftermarket, recycled, salvaged or reconditioned parts. The quality, performance and safety of these parts cannot be verified and may result in substandard repairs, which can inhibit proper vehicle function and cause erroneous DTCs. Only by using Ford original equipment collision parts can you be assured of the part’s fit, finish, quality and safety.

NATIONAL

NEWS ADAS: Demands, Dilemmas and Determination If you’re not completely awed by the automotive world right now, then you haven’t been paying attention. Two years ago, approximately 30 percent of vehicles on the road were equipped with some kind of advanced driver assistance system (ADAS). Last year, that number jumped to 40-45 percent. Now, according to Collision Industry Conference Emerging Technologies Committee Chair Jack Rozint (Mitchell International) at the most recent CIC in Palm Springs, 2019 will be “the first year in which the majority of vehicles hitting the road are going to have ADAS installed” either as standard or optional equipment. This is not an insignificant figure, as (according to AAA) something as common as windshield replacement can now cost close to $2,000 if that item features ADAS technology. These realities come at a time when there are still inter-industry debates over the appropriateness and economic value of pre-and post-repair scanning. While these procedures are critical to proper repairs circa 2019, it appears that what shops charge for this work – and what they receive from the industry for these services – is disordered at best. Ways that shops perform scans run the gamut from using in-house OEM and/or aftermarket tools to sending the vehicle off to a dealer to utilizing mobile technicians and third-party interfaces. These variances have led to scanning rates ranging from $1,000 to sublet scanning work at an area dealer to flat rates at a fraction of that amount – problematic scenarios for one industry that seeks to contain costs and another that relies on making a reasonable profit from every service it renders. “It’s all over the map,” Rozint said. As many in the industry struggle to address the rise in new vehicle technologies and designs, a host of third-party vendors have

seen the opportunity to tap into the post-repair inspection market. While these ventures may create entrepreneurial advantages for these entities, they could spell trouble for shops that fail to maintain what CIC Emerging Technologies Committee member Roger Cada (Accountable Estimatics) calls “bulletproof documentation that’s going to stand the test of time.” In his mind, not following ADAS creates a potentially unsafe outcome for consumers. “Every step that’s created to document a proper repair should be considered to make the vehicle owner whole.” A poll taken by Cada at the most recent CIC revealed that 90 percent of attendees would like to see the forum create a special Estimate Committee to address estimating issues between shops, OEMs and bill payers. Obviously, the escalating demands on repair facilities to properly address these technological changes has necessitated a greater focus on getting technicians up to speed on the shop floor – a point driven home by a recent CIC Education and Training Committee panel discussion on ADAS/safety systems. “Get involved with your local career-technical schools and colleges and make sure they’re incorporating this type of training into their curriculums so that they get young, employable technicians coming out of their programs,” commented panelist Jason Bartanen (I-CAR). “We go to traditional training and learn the fundaments, but you learn by doing,” added Scott Brown, president of Diagnostic Network. “Take it upon yourself to do hands-on [training] and learn from others.” With ADAS and other critical vehicle developments changing the landscape of collision repair, Rozint ultimately sees a hopeful future

Future successes, current worries.

for the industry – but only for those who are willing to get on board today. “I believe there’s going to be plenty of work for collision repairers in the coming years. Collision frequency per mile driven is going to continue to decline. Average repair costs continue to go up based on vehicle complexity. The type of repair work is fundamentally shifting; if you’re a collision repairer, you need to be prepared for it. Work is transitioning from primarily metal frame and refinish to electrical and software. It’s only just starting now, but it’s a trend that will happen very quickly here in the coming years.” H&D

Executive Director’s Thoughts

Building a bulletproof file is something that has become an increasingly popular topic of discussion in light of recent lawsuits. It’s something your shop needs to wrap its arms around. Having the proper photos and notes and complete repair sheets will be just the beginning of what keeps a shop out of the liability arena. - Jordan Hendler

Remembering CIC Co-Founder Jack Caldwell Veteran California-based shop owner and industry advocate Jack Caldwell, who co-founded the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) and served in the Photo courtesy of CollisionWeek California Autobody Association (CAA) for several years (including time as association president in the early ’80s), passed away on February 2 at the age of 85. Current CIC Administrator Jeff Hendler remembers his friend and colleague fondly. “Jack was a leader throughout the development period of the ’80s and ’90s...[He was] actively involved in the passion and times of our industry. Bottom line, he cared - I was proud to know him and even prouder that he considered me a friend.” Caldwell was inducted into the prestigious CIC Hall of Eagles in 1991. In addition to his work with CIC, his numerous industry activities also included active participation in the Automotive Service Association (where he served as collision division chairman) and chairing the California Auto Repair Political Action Committee. Caldwell is survived by three children (Kevin, Kerry and Kelly), six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. WMABA and Hammer & Dolly offer Jack’s family and friends our deepest condolences. H&D

NEWS Data Privacy, DOI Engagement Drive SCRS Agenda

The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) recently kicked off its 2019 agenda with an Open Board Meeting in Palm Springs, CA that updated affiliate members and other industry representatives on the national association’s activities during the final quarter of 2018 and its various plans for the year ahead. In addition to partnering with I-CAR in presenting an exclusive webinar on the organization’s revamped curriculum (i-cartrainto gain.com), SCRS’ successes during the latter part of 2018 included presenting a record-setting Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas and engaging in ongoing discussions with Audatex and other Information Providers in regard to functionality and micro issues with the database products they produce. More recently, the group has been closely monitoring a new law in California that grants consumers the right to have businesses disclose the categories of specific information they collect about them. SCRS Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg discussed potential areas this could dovetail with collision repair business practices, thus having a considerable impact on the growing concerns surrounding data use and ownership in the auto body field. “It’s becoming increasingly clear that collision repairers have very little visibility into how other companies access information that we may need to exchange in the process of performing repairs.” Last summer, SCRS sent out inquires to all 50 state Departments of Insurance for input on their respective regulatory positions on governing the automotive repair claims handling process and keeping insurers and polices accountable to recognizing documented manufacturer procedures. Although not every state had responded by the time of the Open Board Meeting, Schulenburg noted that the participating DOIs had so far revealed a host of issues that SCRS plans to address moving forward.

24

March 2019

Tackling national and regional issues.

“What was evident in the responses was that there was either a lack of understanding or there truly are gaps in statutes that don’t identify this at all. There is certainly language that holds carriers responsible for making parties whole, but the policies don’t necessarily address procedural operations.” Survey results from those DOIs that have responded were released in early February and are available at scrs.com/doi-responses. In other news, SCRS continues to monitor positive initiatives by its various state affiliates. As previously reported in Hammer & Dolly, WMABA has opened a survey for collision repairers in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and Washington D.C. to anonymously rate insurance company market behaviors in several categories. This led SCRS to encourage other state affiliates to participate in the initiative to determine how various carriers are performing at a national level. “This is exactly why we have this network in place,” observed Schulenburg. “Each affiliate would have the opportunity to get what their state looks like,” added WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “This is just a really simple way of letting shops give feedback on insurers and how they are in their market. If affiliates do share it and get enough responses, they’d be able to say, ‘We have this one standout, good insurer that everybody likes working with, and there are standouts that others are having big issues with’.” The Open Board Meeting also featured a special “Kool Tools of SEMA 2018” presentation by SCRS Education Committee members Toby Chess and Kye Yeung. The discussion updated attendees on a host of interesting products by Toby Chess showcased exciting companies, including Car-Oproducts by Car-O-Liner and others. Liner, Reliable Automotive Equipment, Pro Spot International and GYS. The Committee also debuted a new SCRS-produced video on performing diagnostic scans (available online at scrs.com/scrs-education-committee-presentsperforming-diagnostic-scans). SCRS’ meeting/event schedule for 2019 will continue on April 16 with an Open Board Meeting/Annual Board Elections in Nashville, TN. The following day, the association will host its annual Repairer Roundtable and Annual Awards & Corporate Member Recognition Lunch. More information on these and other activities is available at scrs.com. H&D

Executive Director’s Thoughts SCRS is on a major roll lately. If you’re not keeping up with it, they are paving many inroads for affiliates like WMABA to better advocate, educate and innovate our association. They are the ones to watch! - Jordan Hendler

TAKING THE WHEEL TOWARDS EDUCATION: A LOOK INSIDE WMABA’S COLLISION P.R.E.P. AT

The time has come to get ready to head north for some of the best education offered on this coast via the NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show! NORTHEAST returns March 15 to March 17 to the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ and will once again provide one of the biggest annual opportunities for networking, education and industry innovation in the collision industry. WMABA has partnered with the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) to present its Collision Professional Repairer Education Program (Collision P.R.E.P.) for the second consecutive year. “WMABA is excited to team up again with AASP/NJ to host Collision P.R.E.P. for the Eastern US; this is the only opportunity to participate in national-level learning from the industry’s leading experts on this side of the country,” says WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “It may be a bit of a drive or short flight, but it will be well worth the effort. If you missed going to SEMA and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists’ [SCRS] Repairer Driven Education [RDE] series, then you want to make sure to get you and your team to NORTHEAST and Collision P.R.E.P.!” “We are happy to welcome back WMABA and their Collision P.R.E.P. series to the NORTHEAST show,” comments AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee. “They

brought exceptional value to the show last year, and we are excited to have them return with another great slate of topof-the-line, national-level classes.” The educational series kicks off on March 15 at 3pm with the digital marketing course “Expand Your Customer Base – Reach More Online Collision Repair Customers” with presenter Brent Betts (AP Media). Industry favorite Mike Anderson (Collision Advice) will debut a new seminar, “Scanning Best Practices,” at 7pm. On March 16 at 10am, he will present the popular “Write it Right, with Life Nuggets to Live By” course, where he will discuss the documentation needed for conducting business in today’s world of proper vehicle repair. (See facing page for more!) WMABA will also bring together leaders from top car manufacturers for an OEM repair panel on “The Changing Landscape in Certified Repair & Understanding the OEM Repair Procedures” on March 16 at 12:30pm. Collision repairers will not want to miss the chance to hear directly from the manufacturers on how to navigate through the certification process, manage proper documentation and get a glimpse of what the future has in store as things continue to rapidly evolve. Mark Allen, collision and equipment manager for Audi of America, hopes

attendees will walk away with the same critical message that many OEMs have been sharing for the past several years. “It is time to change your business to come into this new millennium and be ready to repair cars from our brands – as well as like-constructed vehicles from other manufacturers.” Allen’s advice to repair professionals is to take a good look at their operations, understand who their consumer is and identify what vehicles they are driving. “Don’t aspire to fix every car anymore; aspire to take care of your customer. Look at what trends are out there in your market. Is that customer going to change or stay the

Michael Bradshaw of K&M Collision (Hickory, NC). Titled “Repairer to Repairer: Realities of Structural Repair & Tooling,” the discussion will see Bradshaw review techniques, processes and considerations for repairers when it comes to structural repair methods and equipment. Mark Olson of VECO Experts will educate auto repair professionals on “Building the Bulletproof File: Documentation for Repair and Reducing Liabilities” on March 16 at 3pm. “NORTHEAST is the perfect venue for this discussion, as there is a good mix of technicians, owners and stakeholders in attendance. They will all have the information,” comments Olson about the value of this course, which will give attendees a clear understanding of how to build a bulletproof file, understand the liability involved in collision repair and learn how to protect themselves. During “Damage Assessment Documentation: Key Steps for Maximum Reimbursement” (March 17 at 10am), John Shoemaker, BASF automotive refinish business development manager, will show attendees ways to document a repair so that everyone from the estimator to the painter and parts person understands what needs to be done. “It is important that a damage appraiser answers the questions before they are asked,” he says. Attendees will also walk away with the knowledge of how valuable a photo can be in validating a repair and related labor hours. Shoemaker recommends attendees come to the presentation with a copy of an estimate they have written. As he has discovered from past discussions, it’s a great practice. “As we go through [the steps], they can make notes on their estimates and see how they could have improved their communication. lot of information, and they will want to make sure they document it so they can remember it for the future.” Are you a repairer looking to get more familiar with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)? Are you ready to advance the way your shop addresses vehicles equipped with these systems? Either way, you will want to attend “Getting it Right for Successful ADAS Diagnostics” on March 17. “ADAS repair procedures and calibration requirements must be followed to a ‘T,’” explains presenter Chuck Olsen (AirPro Diagnostics). “If you make a mistake during the repair – such as overlooking proper installation and alignment of parts or an incorrect thrust angle from alignment – you won’t be successful in ADAS functionality. The same is true when it comes to following OEM service information and knowing what must be done – and when. There are excellent repairers out there, but if you are not very careful, you can really run into serious problems.” Olsen intends to go over all the components for the inputs and outputs used for ADAS – such as cameras, radars and the many other sensors these systems include – and their effect on proper ADAS functionality. From start to finish, the Collision P.R.E.P. class schedule will cover every aspect of today’s ever-changing and often complex repair world. This year, all Collision P.R.E.P. classes will be conveniently located just a few steps away from NORTHEAST at the Holiday Inn Harmon Meadow – the official host hotel of the show. Executive Director’s Thoughts The NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show and Collision P.R.E.P. are big for WMABA. We work to provide this quality education to those in our area and all around the country. It benefits our members directly and also helps the work the association does throughout the year. It’s a big kickoff in the spring, and you could use that as a springboard to get more and more throughout the entire year! Working alongside others to create this event is one of the great works of our Board, and it shows by the participation and excitement that takes place! - Jordan Hendler
