Congratulations to Ed.D. student Atiba Buckman (Ed.D. Student, Cohort 9), Principal of Malcolm X Shabazz High School in Newark.
Through her vision and leadership, the school has opened the first Newark Board of Education Makerspace, and the second largest in Newark. The space is for all of the school’s students and will support their STEM programs, Robotics Club, and non-traditional LEARNERS. We know great things are going to happen there!
Helping FirstGeneration COLLEGE STUDENTS
Dr. Susan Suarez (Ed.D., Cohort 7) was appointed to the More Than Bootstraps Advisor Board.
On the board she has been helping to build a community of first-generation, underrepresented students who empower each other to access and succeed in higher education. Dr. Suarez is a high school English teacher in the Baltimore Public Schools. More than Bootstraps is a New Jersey non-profit dedicated to helping first-generation students succeed in higher education.
ALUM’S Pioneering Work
Congratulations to Dr. Michael Bermudez (M.A., Ed Tech; Ed.D., Cohort 5). He recently took a position at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio, where he joined the Department of Occupational Therapy as an assistant professor.
Michael’s research interests include creating assistive devices for people with disabilities using technology such as makerspaces, circuit boards, simple coding, smartphone apps, and wearable technology. He is also sharing his case study research at the European Network of Occupational Therapy in Higher Education (ENOTHE) conference in Oviedo, Spain—”The Need for Early Intervention in Uganda: A Cross-Case Analysis”—where he is proposing a new model of occupational therapy based on his experiences and research in Africa.
Math Education AND EQUITY
Janet George (Cohort 10) presented “Equity in Action: Building Mathematical Thinking” at the Fall 2023 New Jersey Association of Mathematics Teachers.
HER presentation focused on successful approaches for teaching mathematics in an urban high school. Janet is a mathematics teacher at Snyder High School in Jersey City.

SUCCESS AND INCLUSION at Community College
Enrique Noguera (Cohort 10) was promoted to the position of Assistant Dean of the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) and the Men of Color Success Initiative (MOCSI) at Passaic County Community College.
In his role, Noguera will champion initiatives that support the academic success and professional aspirations of low-income and historically marginalized students. Leading a dynamic dream team of 20, Enrique embodies Passaic’s commitment to inclusivity and progress.

Dr. Katie Kirby (Ed.D., Cohort 7) has been researching, presenting, and publishing on AI in Education.
She contributed a chapter “Generative AI in Critical Thinking“ in the book Chat(GPT): Navigating the Impact of Generative AI Technologies on Educational Theory and Practice. Dr. Kirby is the Principal of Robert Waters Elementary School in UNION CITY, N.J. and a consultant on Virtual Reality and AI in education.

SUMMER STEM Institutes
The Educational Technology Department was proud to run two successful STEM Institutes for New Jersey Teachers—one at NJCU @ Fort Monmouth and the other at Our main campus in Jersey City with over 80 total participants from New Jersey school districts.
Students and Alumni shared workshops on AI, programming, makerspaces, STEAM in School Libraries, and many other topics. Kudos to Dr. Samantha Kozar, Director of the STEM Certificate Program, for organizing the events.

Accepted to N.J. LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Congratulations to Violet Robinson, Ed.D. Student in Cohort 10 and Principal of Paul Robeson Community School for the Arts in New Brunswick. She was just accepted into Cohort 2 of the New Jersey Institute for School Leadership.
The purpose of the Institute is to provide a cadre of principals with world-class training opportunities to improve student learning and engagement, increase teacher and principal retention, and engage community support. Way to go Violet!
Data-Driven LEADERSHIP
Dr. Linda Lampert (Ed.D., Cohort 5) is starting a new role as the District Testing and Data Specialist for the Rahway Public Schools. She will be the District Testing Coordinator (DTC) for all state assessments, overseeing the administration of district, state, and local testing.
Her responsibilities will include the development and implementation of district testing protocols and programs, and working with various teams to analyze data and inform instructional decisions. Rahway Public School contains SIX schools and over 4,000 students. Dr. Lampert is an educator with over 25 years of experience— including classroom teaching and teacher education in higher education. She is an active member in our Assistive Technology Users Group, and her dissertation focused on teacher-parent communication and student performance.
Innovating WITH AI
Dr. Katherine Nieves (Ed.D. Cohort 7) published “5 Ways to Use AI Tools to Meet Student Needs” in Edutopia. Dr. Nieves is a Technology Coordinator at Wayne Public Schools, podcast host, researcher, author, and nationally recognized expert on technology and special education.
Dr. Nieves also presented several highly attended presentations at the 2023 ISTE Conference on technology, special education, co-teaching, and inclusion.

HIGHER ED AND Transfer Students
Kudos to Dr. Michael Arbitblit (Ed.D., Cohort 6) who was the featured speaker at the induction ceremony for the NJCU Tau Sigma Induction CEREMONY. Tau Sigma is the National Honor Society for Transfer Students.
Dr. Arbitblit is the Transfer Enrollment and Articulation Analyst and Manager at the NJCU Transfer Resource Center. He is currently taking the helm of reimagining the Transfer Resource Center from the ground up in the Office of the REGISTRAR, ensuring that NJCU becomes the most transfer-friendly university in the State of New Jersey.

M.A. ALUM APPOINTED AS N.J. Holocaust Speaker
Beverly Margolies (Ed Tech M.A., 2008) was appointed TO THE Speakers Bureau for the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education. Beverly recently retired as the Instructional Designer for BERGEN COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
She has organized and spoken at Holocaust Remembrance events where she shares her parents’ experiences as Jewish teenagers in Europe during WWII.
ED.D. ALUM AND ADJUNCT Earns Adjunct Award
Here’s one congratulation that has earned some interest over the last SIX years. Dr. Remberto Jiminez (Ed.D., Cohort 3) earned the Adjunct of the Year Award in 2017. However, he could not attend the conference to receive the award because he was defending his doctoral dissertation with us. At the 2023 annual conference they gave him the award. As one of our all-star adjuncts, A LEADER in corporate ed tech, scholar, researcher, writer, editor, AND AN all-around awesome person, we say “CONGRATS Rem!”
Maker Day AT NJCU
We had a wonderful Maker Day Event in MARCH, 2023. There were presentations and hands-on activities with a focus on accessibility and projects with our partners at A. Harry Moore. We had teachers from 12 different school districts and over 27,000 online votes for our STEM project competition. COHORT COMPLETES STEM Certificate
Congratulations to the teachers IN HILLSIDE, N.J. for successfully completing our STEM Certificate Program. The 41 teachers of the Hillside Board of Education Cohort successfully completed the four courses, which were delivered online and in their schools. Dr. Gigi Mohamad (Ed.D., Cohort 2) was part of research team that was awarded the New Jersey Library Association’s 2023 Research Award for their article “First Years’ Information Literacy Backpacks: What’s Already Packed or Not Packed?” published in The Journal of Academic Librarianship, Dr. Mohamad is an Assistant Professor at William Paterson University in the School Library Media Program.

Congratulations to Ed Tech M.A. graduate Julie Anne Marck. She won the University’s 2023 #MYNJCUSTORY Contest. Her video highlights the connection between her work as a Jersey City educator and the wonderful education that she received at NJCU.

Dr. Martha Osei-Yaw is the Principal of P.S. NO. 30 in Jersey City. Her school earned the eMerge STEM INITIATIVE Award for making a positive impact on the environment. Congrats Dr. Osei-Yaw!
LEADING IN Health Education
Kudos to Dr. Judith L. Francis (Ed.D., Cohort 6). Dr. Francis was elected the President of the New Jersey Society for Public Health Education (NJSOPHE). NJSOPHE is an organization of health education professionals and students dedicated to improving health through practice and research.
Dr. Francis is the Program Manager for the Central Jersey Family Health Consortium. Her duties include managing grant funded state initiatives centered around maternal and child health concerns, supervising community health workers, and creating digital resources for public health prevention and awareness programs.
Under Dr. Francis’ leadership, her organization recently received an $805,000 grant from Healthy Women, Healthy Families Program to improve health outcomes among Black and Hispanic infants and mothers in New Jersey.
Ed.D. Alum’s Innovative School
Congratulations to Dr. Peter Mattaliano (Ed.D., Cohort 5), Principal of Mahatma K. Gandhi School P.S. NO. 23 in Jersey City. His school earned a Verizon Innovative Schools Grant and the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was on March 23, 2003.
The grant equipped the school with two LABS of 3D printers, Virtual Reality technology, and a host of other hightech equipment. Peter is An M.A. and Ed.D. ALUMNUS in Educational Technology at NJCU. He also EARNED his principal’s
certificate and his B.A. in Special Education from NJCU. Mahatama Gandhi is a Full Service Community School that provides clothes, food, medical, and dental services for their students. Dr. Mattaliano said the vision for this project began in 2003 with his MASTER’S Thesis in Educational Technology. Kudos and thank you Peter for all of your work in the Jersey City Community. Among the luminaries celebrating was Dr. Anna Boscarino (Ed.D. Cohort 4), a Technology Supervisor for the Jersey City Board of Education.

Congratulations to Dr. Martin Hoffman (Ed.D., Cohort 1) who was appointed to the position of Chief Information Officer at Rowan College at Burlington County.
Dr. Forde is the Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services for the New Brunswick School District.
In this role she has worked with a team of mental health providers to develop a mental health program that uses virtual reality. She and her team were invited to present in Washington D.C. for the June 2023 Mental Health America Conference and presented IN October 2023 at the annual New Jersey School Boards Workshop in Atlantic City.
M.A. Alum NEW CORPORATE JOB
Congratulations to Susan DeVito (M.A. Ed Tech, 2017). She was recently promoted to Manager of Operations and Analytics at ClassLink. ClassLink is a global education provider of identity, access, and analytics products that create more time for learning, and help schools better understand digital engagement.
In her new position, Susan will play a pivotal role in overseeing and driving various aspects of business performance optimization, data management, and project management. She will collaborate with cross-functional teams to spearhead a range of initiatives aimed at optimizing business performance through data-driven insights, refining operational procedures, and overseeing projects and personnel metrics. Susan was previously the Educational Success Director at the company.

Dr. Douglas Koch (Ed.D., Cohort 5) presented “Creating A Meaningful Learning Experience Through the Community of Inquiry Framework” at the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Educating Leaders 2023 Conference and “Diverse Minds, One Goal: Using Ed Tech to Support a Diverse Medical Student Population.”
Dr. Koch is the Associate Director of Teaching and Learning at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and the President OF THE Northeast Digital Learning Association.
BLAZING THE TRAIL ON Games in Education
Kudos to Dr. MATTHEW Farber (M.A., Ed Tech; Ed.D., Cohort 1). This year, Dr. Farber published “Going Beyond the Page: Pairing Children’s Literature with Video Games” in the journal Children and Libraries.
He authored the chapter “Awkward Moment” in the book Learning, Education, and Games: 50 Games to Use for Inclusion, Equity, and Justice. Dr. Farber is the author of numerous books and articles on games in education and is an Associate Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Northern Colorado.
DOCTORAL STUDENT with Global Reach
Nadia Abdallah (Ed.D. Student, Cohort 10) is the COO for Junior Achievement Worldwide and an international thought leader focusing on education in the Middle East and North Africa.
She was a featured panelist at the COP28 Summit where she discussed the integration of climate education and life skills. She was interviewed in the Leading, Language and Literature Podcast for her expertise in the International Baccalaureate (IB) and for leading professional development in the creation of interdisciplinary units. Nadia also shared her expertise on the panel discussion at Franklin University Switzerland’s on ‘Social Impact in Education: Transforming the Funding Paradigm.’

Alum Earns SCHOLAR AWARD
Congratulations to Samantha Melworm, a current student in our M.A. in Ed Tech with SLMS Certification. Samantha received the 2022 New Jersey Exemplary Educator Award from the New Jersey Department of Education.
Furthermore, she was just board approved to start as the Library Media Specialist at Nettingham Middle School in her current school district of Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Way to go Samantha!
GIRLS IN STEM Symposium
NJCU Ed Tech students and ALUMNI were an integral part of the Hudson County Girls in STEM Symposium this March.
They shared hands-on learning activities with young women from all over Hudson County and focused on the link between NASA and their use of origami. Special kudos to Dr. Dana Mason (Ed.D., Cohort 7) and Dr. Fahima Bachia (Cohort 3) for their continued leadership in this event.
Chinese Cohort Graduates
After three years of hard fun, our 13 students from Jilin International Studies University in Changchun, China graduated. In MAY, 2023, a hooding ceremony and graduation were jointly conducted via Zoom in the U.S. and in China to honor these students, faculty, and administrators who made this partnership work. We are grateful for the privilege of working with these dedicated educators.
Michael DUNLEALife Changer of the Year
Congratulations to Michael Dunlea (M.A. Ed Tech, 2008). He was nominated for the Life Changer of the Year Award for 2023-24. Michael is the only N.J. Teacher to earn Teacher of the Year from two counties—Ocean (2011) and Burlington (2020).
The Life Changer Award recognizes and rewards K-12 educators who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying a positive influence and leadership.
NEW JERSEY EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION Rocking Great Time
The department had a wonderful and exciting time at the 2023 New Jersey Educational Association Convention on November 9th and 10th. Sharing information about our programs, giving workshops, and connecting with ALUMNI from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s and the 2020’s. Social Emotional Learning Published GREEN Teacher
Congratulations to Dr. Filiz Zebek (Ed.D., Cohort 8). Her doctoral research was just published in the open-access e-book What PreK-12 teachers Should Know About Educational Technology in 2023: A Research-to-Practice Anthology published by the Association for the Advancement of Computers in Education (AACE).

Congratulations to Dr. Dana Mason, (Ed.D., Cohort 7) for being selected as a 2023 Green Teacher by the Green Mentors Organization at the 7th NYC Green SCHOOL Conference 2023. The Green Mentors Organization is based in India and they have special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
Dr. Mason also recently took the position of Service Specialist in the Educational Technology Department at NJCU. Way to go Dr. Mason!

Congratulations to Mr. Roberto Romero (M.A. Ed Tech) for successfully completing the 2023 New York Marathon.
Roberto successfully beat back stage 4 pancreatic cancer with a experimental treatment at Sloan Kettering Hospital in December 2022. He ran to raise money for the hospital in the THE NOVEMBER 2023 Marathon.

In November, Dr. Christopher Shamburg (Ed.D. Coordinator and Professor) led a day of Professional Development for the New Jersey Educational Computing Cooperative. The focus was on Technology, Inclusion, Engagement, and Assistive Technology.

Dr. Bensetti-Benbader is the Director of Computing and STEM Career Initiatives. Her team was honored at Rutgers for going to “exceptional lengths to remove barriers and provide access…and recognizing the value of a diverse student body and the challenges that students often face and seeks to make education more accessible and attainable.”
STUDENT LEADING IN Games in Education
Kudos to all of the work that Patricia Dennis (Ed.D. Student, Cohort 11) is doing with games and education. Patricia is a member of Games 4 Change Professional Development Network where she focuses on applying game design principles to global citizenship. She is co-founder of her school’s Girls Who Code Club and founder of the school’s Esports team. She is also a member of the Garden State Esports Emerging Leader Program. Patricia is the Instructional Media Technology Specialist and Technology Director at the Pride Academy Charter School in East Orange, N.J.
LEADING AFTER Retirement
Mr. Jerry Tuttle (M.A. Ed Tech) is currently an online adjunct in Math and Data Analytics at Southern New Hampshire University, after retiring from the insurance industry.
He has regularly presented at American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) and at Florida Gulf Coast University on diverse topics such as “Data Analysis of Speed Dating” and “Data Analysis of the Donner Party.” Inspired in part by one of his NJCU courses, he also presented on Copyright and Math Teaching.
FACULTY MEMBER RECEIVES Service Award
Congratulations to Dr. Christopher Shamburg, Professor and Doctoral Coordinator of the NJCU Educational Technology Department, on being awarded the Joe Riotto Award for Extraordinary Service to the Senate.
This award is presented by the New Jersey City University Senate to an individual in recognition of their ongoing contributions and superior services, exemplified by Dr. Riotto’s commitment to shared governance, integrity, transparency, engagement, civility, respect, and consistency. WE HELD OUR ED.D. SUMMER INSTITUTE ON CAMPUS DURING THE WEEK OF JULY 17-21, 2023. IT WAS A WEEK OF HARD FUN. Cohort 9 defended their dissertation proposals, gave poster sessions on their dissertation topics, and presented their portfolios. Cohort 10 took their comprehensive exams, and Cohort 11 was welcomed into our community (check out this wonderful new group: The Elevated Eleven). The week featured guest speakers from our alumni network, field visits, classes, team building activities, good food, and hard fun. Here are some of the highlights in pictures:
