NJMEA President Welcome to the 2022 NJMEA State Conference!

On behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to thank you for joining us for our 2022 New Jersey Music Educators Association State Conference here in Atlantic City. We are excited to be able to greet you in person for the first time since our 2020 conference. It is hard to believe that just two years ago, our entire way of life was upended. Between COVID-19 protocols which have severely changed the way all of us do our jobs and the daily influx of changing information, many of us are doing our best to make it through the day.

I want to commend you all for making the investment in your profession and your students by coming to this convention. Professional development is a central component to what we offer our members and is my earnest hope that by taking advantage of the sessions, performances, exhibits, and opportunities to connect with colleagues, you return to school excited, renewed, refreshed, and refocused.

As you look through the conference schedule, please note that we have dedicated concert hours that feature several performance groups from throughout the Northeast. Our General Session on Friday will provide us a time to recognize our Master Music Teachers and other award recipients, as well as hear from this year’s keynote speaker, Anne Fennell. We hope you also enjoy our special guest evening performance artists, The US Air Force Band, and the Singing Sergeants!

One of the reasons we moved our conference to Atlantic City, was so that you could enjoy some of the evening and social life of the city. Please take some time to visit some of the area’s eateries and stores, they will be grateful for your business.

I hope you will join us in Newark at the New Jersey Performance Arts Center, for the performances of our All-State Treble Choir, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble. The concert will take place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. This will be the first time since 2020 that our All-State Ensembles have performed in person and we couldn’t be more excited to see them mark this momentous return to the stage!

Finally, would like to thank Marie Malara, our Conference Chairperson, and her team for all of their time and hard work in putting together this year’s program. I would also like to thank our Executive Director, Bill McDevitt, for his efforts and aid in all aspects of registration and planning. His wisdom and institutional knowledge have been essential during this transitional time in our profession and our organization.

This has been a trying 2 years for the world as a whole, but particularly music education has suffered many setbacks. I firmly believe that this conference can be a moment for you to reignite and reimagine yourself and your profession. Do not miss this moment. Use the momentum from this weekend to propel you to the next level.

ANNE FENNELL Anne Fennell is the K-12 Music Program Manager for San Diego Unified School District in San Diego, CA. She holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education, a Masters in leadership Studies, Orff Schulwerk certification for levels I, II and III and has additional training and certifications in global music studies, character education, gifted and talented education, and cross-cultural language and academic development. Her experiences include 32 years of teaching kindergarten through grade 12 music education, integrated arts and music, leading performance ensembles in civic and professional organizations and national conferences, including the annual NAMM Board of Directors meeting (2013 & 2016), and teaching three levels of both steel drum ensembles and music composition through technology, grades 9-12.

She is a recognized presenter and clinician at professional conferences and workshops at local, regional, national, and international levels, including the International Society of Music Education, the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, American Orff-Schulwerk Association, the National Parent-Teacher Association, Tennessee Arts Academy, National Association for Music Education, California Music Educators Association, and numerous music education conferences throughout the United States.

Ms. Fennell has given advocacy presentations and served as a consultant for school districts on assessment, standards-based curriculum, creativity, composition, and integrated arts instruction. Her publications include titles from Pearson Education and Silver Burdett, MusicVentures created with a U.S. Dept. of Education research grant in conjunction with NAMM, Disney - Baby and LIttle Einsteins, Labels for Education: Discovery Through Music with the GRAMMY Foundation, and K-12 integration connections for the Roots and Rhythm curriculum. She was a Sub-Committee Music Writing Team member for the National Core Arts Music Standards and is 2016-2018 member of the NAfME General Music Education Council and 2016-2020 National Chair for the NAfME Innovations Council.

2022 NJMEA State Conference Friday Night Gala Concert

US Air Force Band and Singing Sergeants The Concert Band is the official symphonic wind ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that form The U.S. Air Force Band. Featuring 52 active-duty musicians, the Concert Band performs across the United States via biannual tours, engages the local community in our nation's capital through numerous concert series, and reaches millions globally through live radio, television, and internet broadcasts. Additionally, Concert Band members perform in smaller chamber ensembles at official military and civilian functions, education outreach events, and local concert venues.

The Concert Band performs a wide variety of music ranging from classical transcriptions and original works to solo features, light classics, popular favorites, and patriotic selections. Remaining faithful to the Air Force's pioneering spirit, it is renowned as a champion of new works for band, with dozens of world premieres to its credit. The ensemble is sought-after by many of the world's most highly respected professional musical organizations, including The American Bandmasters Association, the National Association for Music Education, and The Midwest Clinic.

The Singing Sergeants is the official chorus of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that form The U.S. Air Force Band. Featuring 24 active-duty musicians, the Singing Sergeants support military and civilian ceremonial and diplomatic functions, education outreach events, and concerts throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C., and the United States.

Formed initially as a men's chorus in 1945 from the rank and file of The U.S. Army Air Forces Band, the Singing Sergeants became the first premier military chorus to enlist women in 1973, diversifying their mission and increasing their scope of musical versatility. Today, the group's members often perform for the Department of Defense and other high-level military and civilian functions, using music to bridge language and cultural differences and helping advance positive diplomatic relations through song. The chorus is regularly featured at regional and national music education conferences, including the American Choral Directors Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and Chorus America. At varied venues, the Singing Sergeants reach a diverse audience with the beauty and power of music.

As part of The U.S. Air Force Band, the Concert Band and Singing Sergeants’ mission is to HONOR those who have served, INSPIRE American citizens to heightened patriotism and service, and CONNECT with the global community on behalf of the U.S. Air Force and the United States. All-State Symphonic Band Conductor Jay S. Gephart joined the faculty of Purdue University in the fall of 1995 after completing 12 years as a public school band director. In November, 2006, Professor Gephart was appointed Director of University Bands and currently serves as the Al G. Wright Chair of Purdue Bands and Orchestras. He is the director of the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band the Purdue University Wind Ensemble. He is also coordinator of the concert band program.

Professor Gephart received a Master of Music Degree in Tuba Performance with High Distinction from Indiana University in 1988 and a Bachelor of Music Education Degree with Distinction from Indiana University in 1983. Under his direction, the Purdue Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra have shared the stage with some of the nation’s outstanding soloists and have represented Purdue at the Indiana Music Educators Association state convention on two occasions.

Under his direction the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band has traveled literally around the world. With recent performances in Beijing China, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland and La Feria de las Flores in Medellin, Colombia, the “All-American” Marching Band continues to serve as an ambassador for Purdue, the state of Indiana and the nation.

Professor Gephart has served as a guest conductor, clinician, lecturer and adjudicator both nationally and internationally. In 1997, he was selected to conduct the music camp honor band for the Department of Education in the Northern Region of Queensland, Australia. In his career he has been the recipient of many awards and honors including the Indiana Outstanding Bandmaster Award, the Purdue University New Professional Award, and the 2018 James Calvert Outstanding Music Educator Award. In 2016, he was named an Honorary Old Master by Purdue University. Mr. Gephart has been very active in various professional organizations including National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, College Band Director’s National Association, Indiana Bandmaster’s Association, Indiana Music Educators Association and Phi Beta Mu. In 2012, he was elected to a position on the board of the National Band Association, serving as the Collegiate Representative.

He and his wife Jana have four children and two grandchildren. They reside in Lafayette, Indiana.

All-State Wind Ensemble Conductor Ray E. Cramer holds degrees from Western Illinois University and the University of Iowa, Honorary Doctorates from Western Illinois University and the VanderCook College of Music. In 2009 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship at the Musashino Academia of Musicae in Tokyo.

Ray E. Cramer was a member of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music faculty for 36 years. As the Director of Bands the IU Wind Ensemble earned an international reputation for outstanding musical performances.

He is a past National President of the College Band Directors National Association and The American Bandmasters Association. He also served as president of the Indiana Bandmasters Association, the North Central Division of CBDNA and the Big Ten Band Directors Association. He was a member of the Midwest Clinic Board of Directors for 20 years and was president 13 of those 20 years.

He is an Advisory Board member for the Japan Band Clinic and was elected as an Honorary Member of the Japan Band Directors Association in 2016.

Mr. Cramer has received numerous awards including the Edwin Franko Goldman award (2002), The MENC Lowell Mason Fellow Medallion (2003), Midwest Clinic Medal of Honor (2005), Bands of America Hall of Fame (2006), The Northshore Concert Band Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), the 17th Japan Academic Society of Winds, Percussion and Band Award (2007), The Academy of Wind and Percussion Arts by the National Band Association (2008), the John Paynter Lifetime Achievement Award (2009) the National Band Association “Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors” (2009) and the CBDNA “Lifetime Achievement Award.” (2015) Mr. Cramer remains actively involved in clinics and guest conducting engagements nationally and internationally. He serves as a regular guest conductor for the Musashino Academy of Music in Tokyo. (1990 to present) He has conducted the Musashino Wind Ensemble on tours throughout Japan and three performances at the Midwest Clinic in 1995, 2006 and 2018.

PROG RAM

All-State Treble Chorus Conductor Brandon Williams is an Assistant Professor of Choral Music and Choral Music Education at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He conducts the Rutgers Voorhees Choir (Carnegie Hall 2019, Eastern ACDA 2020) and teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses related to choral music education. Dr. Williams also appears internationally as a guest conductor, clinician, and presenter.

Dr. Williams amassed a decade of middle and high school teaching experience in St. Louis, Missouri, where he also served on the voice faculty at Maryville University and as a conductor with the St. Louis Symphony IN UNISON Chorus and the St. Louis Children’s Choirs. His school ensembles received invitations to perform at the 2010 and 2013 Missouri Music Educators Association conventions, and his middle school ensemble was featured on GIA’s DVD entitled “How to Make a Good Choir Sound Great!” Dr. Williams has been awarded the 2009 Missouri Choral Directors Association Prelude Award for excellence in choral music, an Outstanding Teacher Award from the University of Missouri-Columbia Honors College, and the 2020-21 Rutgers Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovations.

Dr. Williams holds degrees from Western Illinois University, the University of Illinois Urbana- Champaign, and Michigan State University, where he earned the prestigious University Enrichment Graduate Fellowship Award. He also completed an Artist Teacher Diploma from the Choral Music Experience–Institute for Choral Teacher Education. In addition to his articles in the Choral Journal and the Music Educators Journal, Dr. Williams is the editor of Choral Reflections—a collection of interviews with 30 leading conductor-teachers. He has numerous choral compositions and arrangements published with Hal Leonard, G. Schirmer, Mark Foster, and Colla Voce. Dr. Williams is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, and the National Association for Music Education.
