Senate wants a November vote ‘People power’ drives energy take back... On the 3rd of November there hopes to be a referendum on whether Berlin takes control of its own energy supplies again. A collection of over 265,000 signatures gives this initiative much momentum which is headed by
Interior Senator, Frank Henkel. There is divided opinion on which date this vote should take place, with some, such as the house of representatives and the Mayor, favouring the later November date, in contrast to the Green Party wishing
to combine it with the parliamentary elections on the 22nd of September. The signature collection was published on July 5th in the Official Journal and according to referendum law the senate has 15 days to determine a refer-
endum voting date. This has to be a holiday or a Sunday within four months of the journal publication date. Therefore, the 3rd of November is the very latest that this can take place. J.C.
More space for the poor Frankfurt is out-pricing its citizens...
Tensions grow on Asylum Plans for refugee centre ignites debate... The planned refugee camp in Heller village has sparked an overtly aggressive debate on refugees. This area, of MarzahnHeller village, houses 2.4% of Berlin’s refugees, with a plan to create an extended refugee camp in an empty school with a capacity for 200 refugees
rising to 400 next year. The chants of “we are here in Germany”, when not accepting and protesting over the number of refugees being accepted into Germany, are cried angrily. What you see here is a microcosm of what is felt through the rest of the country. The govern-
ing Mayor of Berlin says that, “tolerance to people who come from all over the world to us is the foundation of our community”; a community which is growing with a 30% increase in asylum applications for Germany. J.C.
In Frankfurt, the lowincome families are slowly being priced out of the housing market. It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to find affordable housing, with more pressure being put onto the municipal Office of Housing. Even this is a long-drawn process with a waiting list, registered at the end of 2012, of 7,906 families, compared to 7,154 families at the end of 2011. The coalition party are taking action to try and reduce these numbers and have been acquiring occupancy rights with an estimated budget of €3-million increasing to €4.93-million in 2017, to bridge the gap between the actual rent and the social rent level. The municipality of Frankfurt currently has
access to 779 houses and budgets to increase this social housing by up to 180 houses annually. Although the acquired occupancy rights are spread in different areas of the city, so as not to
create “social hot spots”, there is a cap of €10 per square metre to prevent the municipality from subsidising luxury accommodation.

Children in Berlin go to work More and more companies are offering kindergarten facilities… Sports, English breakfast, swimming lessons, trips and excursions are all part of the children’s schedule. The parents also benefit without having to rush or fight traffic and arrive late to work. One of Berlin’s largest employers, Bayer Pharma AG, has been operating
such a system since 1972, where there are 155 children in 'day care'. The service is not free and parents still have to pay but there is much less stress, proving so popular that there is a waiting list of 80-100 children. ‘Day care’ is increasingly becoming a problem with companies such as the
German Bahn AG establishing 240 spaces nationwide. These ‘day care’ spaces offer maximum flexibility for the working parent with opening times coinciding with shift start and finish times and staying open throughout the summer. Other companies, such as Dussmann Group and
BMW in Spandau, operate similar systems. The appeal of this system reaches beyond industry with public institutions like the parliament and universities understanding the benefits to everyone in supplying their own on-site nurseries. J.C.
Schools spillover in Stuttgart Overcrowding - a real classroom problem… Stuttgart classrooms are heading for a bottleneck, especially in 2014/15. There are not enough spaces for students in the classrooms and the education authority is looking at using additional annexed spaces in mobile portakabin style buildings and introducing profile restrictions to ease the problem. It means that there will not be such a free flow of students to Stuttgart schools from those outside of the area such as the children from Ostfildern and the Sillenbucher Grammar School. The main group of students to be affected are the Fifth graders, and with increased investment it is no guarantee that the authorities can keep up
with demand in resolving this issue. Schools are therefore looking more closely at student profiles such as performance, behavioural
attitude and the will to complete homework, as part of the criteria for acceptance. J.C.
Luxury apartments in Gallus The Gallus district of Frankfurt builds luxury for students… Private developers are building high quality apartments in the Gallus district. There will be a combination of high-end luxury apartments and condominiums together with high quality student accommodation. The Galluspark com-
plex will have 2,100 apartments with a maximum occupation of 3,500 people; of this, there are 600 smaller 1-bedroom apartments expected to be for student accommodation. The student accommodation of 20 to 24
square metre apartments, with facilities such as private parking, concierge and rooftop terrace, although only €490 per month, is still out of the reach of many students. J.C.

Nuremberg Imperial Castle The Nuremberg Imperial Castle is open again… After its refurbishment, the Nuremberg Imperial Castle is open to the public once again. The €16-million refurbishment programme concentrated on the main hall and tower, redesigning the Maria Sybylla garden at the Heide
Tower, screening of the deep wells and designing for a new exhibition on the Sinwellturm. The opening exhibition was titled “Kaiser – Empire – City” which is a show place for many valuable pieces including the Golden Bull. Together
with impressive performances in this authentic setting, it re-creates the history and everyday life of the unique history of Nuremberg and its castle from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. J.C.

CCTV causes complaints
CCTV reaches 12,000 cameras in the city of Berlin... Berliners, according to Alexandra Dix of the Data Protection Commission, are making increased complaints about the intrusion in public spaces. The majority of the 12,000 cameras are focused on the Berlin U-Bahn - according to a 2012 report by internal management. In Bavaria, there are 17,000 cameras; Here the Bavarian Data Protection Commissioner, Thomas Petri warns against the false sense of
security that cameras give, since they do not help in the instance of the crime being committed but can only be referred to after the event. Since last year the four cities of Strausberg, Frankfurt (Oder), Potsdam and Guben have all been officially monitored by CCTV. Legislation from the Brandenburg Police Act obligates the State Government to report overt and covert opera-
tions and information gathered through CCTV coverage. In Potsdam, they consider the cameras a very effective deterrent where in 2012 the CCTV cameras were focused on the main station, and where 91 offences were committed in comparison with 1,325 criminal offences in adjacent areas without surveillance. ECo-logne sees Gas Tanker Silent shipping is the future...…
The Rhine will see over 8,000 vessels sail past Cologne annually, creating noise and engine pollution, leaving very often a bad stink in their wake. It is an important step, therefore, that the 110m, €7-million Green Stream has now come to Cologne on its way to Rotterdam. This is the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) driven ship, with no particulate emissions and
50% quieter on noise. This is only the start. There is already a sister ship, the Green Rhine, soon to be launched and strong demand from the
USA. A Shell spokesman has already indicated that this trend is going to greatly increase for the future. J.C.
Last year, there were 371 reported incidents with dogs, 140 of them so serious that they were the reason for this new legislation. This new legislation applies to any dog taller than 50cm in height from the paw to the shoulder and obligates the dog handler to keep the dog tethered in certain public areas and spaces. In some instances this has
already been the case but it extends to the Old Town Square, signposted pedestrian areas, traffic areas with play street signs, all public markets, meetings and events. Dogs must also be leashed in the vicinity of playgrounds both public and private. Although there was resistance and protests from dog owners, the council vote had no such resistance since the impe-
tus of the debate came from several serious incidents in 2012 including an attack on a two-year-old baby that was bitten on the face. The 371 reported incidents of 2012 were double that of 2011 and this strictly imposed legislation has been introduced to bring these incidents under control. J.C.
Parasite in Mosquito bite Proven: Mosquito bite carries dangerous parasite... According to scientists at the Bernhard Nocht Institute (BNI) in Hamburg, the Brandenburg Mosquito carries a pathogen. This pathogen is dangerous to humans and is transmitted by the Mosquito from infected dogs from the warmer climes of southern Europe, but more recently from Austria, Poland and the Czech Republic. Once transmitted to the human, it has the potential to cause meningitis but, thankfully, due to the cooler climes
so far, this has not been reported. According to the President of the Brandenburg State Office for Environment, there is no cause for alarm, although annoying, Mosquito bites are not dangerous. There are ways of minimising the spread and laying of eggs or Mosquito larva, by taking away standing or stagnant water. Often, plant pots and water barrels are breeding grounds for Mosquitos; this situation
has not been helped by the rains of the early summer. Hopefully, with the dry weather of the summer, it should help to reduce the spread of these insects. Mosquitos are not attracted by light but by human odour, warmth of the skin and the carbon dioxide expelled from breathing; best advice given by the experts is to use insect repellent and sleep under a Mosquito net. J.C.
Female skin clinic opens New women’s skin clinic now under one roof...
P r ev iou sly, t he Depar t ment of Dermatology and Women’s Hospital functioned from a group of scattered buildings on the old hospital site. Now they are combined in a new 14,000 sq metre facility under one roof at the University of
Heidelberg. This new clinic is situated in what is known as the Heidelberg Clinic Ring where all facilities are designed and linked to work together efficiently. Healthcare, ambulance, laboratory, pathology, logistics and administra-
tion are all connected to an underground transport system and pneumatic tube system. This €100-million investment has been a combination of Government and private investment. J.C.

Canadian arrives at Bank of England Canadian, Mark Carney has become the first nonBritish citizen to govern the Bank of England. The 48-year-old heads an institution with a 300-year history and has new powers designed to ensure financial sta-
bility and prevent perverse activity at Britain’s banks. He was previously at the Bank of Canada and is widely credited with helping the Canadian economy recover quickly from the downturn.

Immigration backlog comes as a shock to British MPs
Bob Crow wants new political party The opposition Labour Party in Britain has always had difficulty reconciling its funding and support from the trade unions with its handling of business and labour relations matters and it has not got any easier. Union boss, Bob Crow is
urging the unions to break ties with Labour leader Ed Miliband and create a new party that “speaks for working people.” Mr Crow is opposed to plans to end the automatic affiliation of union members to the Labour Party.
News Corp to break ties with Wapping The latest news on Britain’s newspapers is that Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp is to break its historic ties with Wapping, the scene of trade union unrest that changed the face of the industry in 1986. The operation will share a headquarters on the South Bank of the River Thames with the
Dow Jones financial newswire operation and book publisher Harper Collins. The shake-up is the latest move following the hacking scandal and closure of the News of the World national Sunday newspaper. The Sun and The Times newspapers are involved in the move.
Reflecting on the age of steam There is, in Britain, a great deal of interest in the history of steam trains and recently, a locomotive named Bittern travelled up the East Coast mainline at the fastest speed travelled by a steam train in almost half a century.
in Germany
Built in 1937, the engine is almost identical to the world’s fastest steam locomotive Mallard, which hit a record 126 miles per hour near Grantham in 1938, a speed that remains a record today.
The extent of the backlog of immigration cases requiring consideration in Britain has come as a shock, with the suggestion that at the current rate of progress it could take 40 years to clear them. An all-party group of MPs tasked to look at the problem came up with
the figures and they say half a million people are involved. That there were problems with the UK Border Agency was well known and it led to the agency being scrapped, but the MPs are now concerned to ensure that the new arrangements, under the direct control of minis-
ters, are not simply a rebranding. There has been a suggestion that there should be no bonuses paid to senior management at the Home Office until the backlog is cleared. There are now two agencies, the UK Visas and Immigration Ser vice and the Immigration Enforcement Command.
The latter will concentrate on those who break immigration laws. The campaigning group Migration Watch accepts that the present government inherited a system in chaos but says that while the policy is now right greater resources must be provided to bring immigration under control.
Jacqueline Bisset’s role in new movie Br it i sh actress, Jacqueline Bisset has been working on a new movie entitled Welcome to New York – based loosely on the story of
the former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique StraussKahn. French-speaking Bisset, 68, plays Simone, the wife of an influential
financier in the film. St rauss-Kah n was accused of assaulting a chambermaid in a New York hotel in 2011. At the time he was widely
expected to stand as a French presidential candidate. He later reached a settlement with his accuser and was never convicted of a crime.
‘We must listen to hospital patients’

Bus travel to be free for children? Children in Britain could travel on buses free under plans being considered by the Liberal Democrats, and Deputy Prime Minister and party leader Nick Clegg is keen on the idea. The Daily Telegraph newspaper has reported that child bus passes could be announced later this year as part of a package of measures. But the party says it is too early to say whether the idea can
be delivered. Norman Baker, the Transport Minister, has argued that bus fares for young people vary across Britain and he wants to make bus travel more accessible. Children and young people under 18 in fulltime education can travel free on London buses and Mr Baker is concerned that similar arrangements are not in place throughout the country.
Images of rape may be banned
Patients should own their own medical records and have more say in how much medical professionals earn, according to the former Chief Executive of Britain’s National Health Scheme.
Lord Crisp told the Sunday People newspaper that giving more power to patient should be a top priority and the Mid Staffordshire hospital scandal had shown the importance of
listening to patients. Under the plan, patient representatives would organise satisfaction surveys on the performance of GPs’ surgeries and hospitals. Those who performed
Pain free death policy reviewed An end-of-life regime, designed to offer peaceful, pain-free deaths when used properly, should be phased out in Britain according to an independent review. The regime, known as the Liverpool Care Pathway, results in treatment, food
and water being withdrawn from sedated patients in their final days, but some reports have suggested doctors have been establishing death lists of patients and some hospitals have been using the method to cut costs and free up
Prescott hits out over press laws Former Labour Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott has resigned from Britain’s prestigious Privy Council because he believes delay in new press regulation following the hacking scandal “borders on conspiracy.” He fears a cross party solution, a Royal Charter providing for a new sys-
tem of self-regulation, will be rejected in favour of rival proposals by the newspaper industry. Lord Prescot t had accepted only with reluctance the cross party compromise following the Leveson Inquir y. “The Priv y Council must put Parliament and Parliament’s Char ter first,” he said.

well would get more money and those who do badly would get less. “Patients need to be at the top of the power pyramid, not at the bottom,” said Lord Crisp.
The debate on online pornography continues in Britain and it has been revealed that Government Ministers are now actively considering changes to the law. Concern has already been express on child pornography and more recently images depicting rape have come under the spotlight. A loophole in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 allows the possession
of images of rape in England but it is illegal in Scotland. Pressure groups are now pressing the Government to amend the law in England. Google, Microsoft and BT have been in talks with Culture Secretary Maria Miller and four main internet providers have now agreed to provide an extra £1 million to help the work of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

Oversized White Shirts
I
t's time to make friends with a crisp, white big shirt this season; and don't forget the starch to keep that oversized tailoring sharp. This is one of my favourites and suits all shapes and sizes. It can be worn with skinny jeans, on its own or over shorts depending on how brave you are.
Frilly dresses

Developing a Nose for Wine
I
was unlucky the other day as at lunch I was placed opposite a wine bore. Now wine may be a passion of mine, but when peoples’ eyes begin to glaze over, I know it’s time to stop. Oddly enough, once he’d finished describing at length his extraordinary nose for wine, it made me think about how do you develop a ‘nose for wine’. One of the first things I would say is don’t worry or fret about it. As with many things, it takes time to develop, and just because you can’t initially smell hints of apricot, blackberry or vanilla undertones, doesn’t mean you won’t be able to, and like so many aspects of life the only way you’ll succeed is by practicing. If you decide you are going to practice seriously, and not just sample your wine with your lunch or evening
meal, then the first step is not to eat for a couple of hours before sampling. The rationale is simple. Strongly flavoured foods can actually interfere with how you smell and taste things and what you clearly don’t want are strong flavours obscuring the true aroma of the wine. When you’re ready, pour the wine into a large wine glass and look at the colour. Is it ruby red? Does it have a purple tinge? Remind you of lemons or have a buttery colour to it? Colour is important! When tasting a wine, you really do have to use your senses, so look at the wine carefully. Swirl it round the glass and then look at it again and again. Swirling the wine helps, as it allows particles in the wine to react with the air around it which in turn allows the aromas to develop. So swirl it gently again and
again, watching the colour while allowing the wine’s true scents to develop and mingle. Once you’ve swirled the wine, bring the glass to your nose and breathe in deeply to ensure you pick up all the different aromas. There really is no subtlety about this. It’s not a quick delicate sniff, so make sure you get your nose right into the bowl of the glass and inhale deeply. To help you, make brief notes of what you smell after each swirl even if you just start off with ‘berry fruits’, earthy or even a simple fruit such as blackberries. Write down everything you smell and gradually you will be able to identify individual fruits, tones, spices and scents. But don’t overdo it to start off with; and remember, your nose and olfactory system can become tired. Give your
nose a rest between sniffs and only start off with a couple of sniffs and slowly increase your nose-training sessions as you become more accustomed to identifying different scents. Of course, once you’ve swirled and smelled, you can begin tasting… and remember, you will taste what you have smelled; so again, it may be advisable to take notes. It also helps if you know a few terms, so here is a quick guide:
Fresh-nosed Wines
Are often zesty and very pleasant to drink.
Flowery Wines
Are, as the term suggests, flowery and fragrant.
Fruity Wines
Often smell of fresh, ripe grapes and other fruits such
as apricots, red berries and plums. However, what you don’t want to smell is vinegary wines, simply throw those away. A 'corked' wine may smell of rotten eggs so again it’s totally unfit to drink. Metallic tasting wines may have been caused by metal contamination while mouldy wines could be the result of using rotten grapes or the wine being stored in dirty bottles or casks. Again, these wines are undrinkable. So, like with anything else in life, it’s a case of practice, practice and more practice and sometimes there is nothing nicer than swirling a wine gently round a glass, inhaling deeply and allowing the wine’s aroma to momentarily take over your senses...

Leisure Tanz im August 2013
2 -7 July, 2013
Alongside the Montpellier Danse and Impulstanz in Vienna, Tanz im August (Dance in August) in Berlin is the most important dance festival in Europe. Since 1989, it has showcased a wide range of contemporary dance, including international dance stars as well as experimental choreography and new aesthetics and formats. For its 25th anniversary, the festival is taking a new direction under festival director Bettina Masuch. It is now linked also with the Hebbel am Ufer theatre, which is known for its progressive and queer productions. In 2012, Tanz im August attracted just under 17,000 visitors, selling 97% of available tickets. It is not purely a queer festival, but always offers a large proportion of queer-related content – in 2010, for example, a piece about the transgender experience opened the festival, while last year the theme of Tanz im August was sexual ambiguities and AIDS.

21 – 25 August, 2013
The world’s largest computer games trade show ‘Gamescom’ is moving up to the next level. From 21 – 25 August 2013, numerous new game products and hardware innovations will be showcased at the Cologne trade fair. From 21 – 25 August, Cologne will be transformed into a Mecca for gamers. At Gamescom, the trade show for interactive games and entertainment, exhibitors will be showcasing all novelties in the gaming sector. The latest computer and console games will be on display in the large ‘entertainment area’ in halls 6 – 10 – in the most spectacular fashion! Visitors can test out the games even before their release. Nintendo is once again represented in the halls of the Cologne trade fair this year. The Japanese console producer’s acceptance of the invitation means that Gamescom’s organisers can breathe a huge sigh of relief. Last year, many big names like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo weren’t represented at the show. This year, the latter, at least, has decided to return. This is a great success for the organisers as visitor numbers for 2012 were slightly down compared to the previous year.

Open Tuesday – Sunday
MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt/Main is one of the world’s most important museums of contemporary art and, despite being a relative newcomer on the scene, has in the space of less than two decades established a firm place for itself in the international museum scene. Ever since MMK first opened in 1991, it has played a major part in the cultural and social life of the city. With its post-modern architecture, which is today considered quite exemplary, the MMK likewise offers a major platform for culture in Frankfurt, ensuring the city will never again lack a museum for contemporary art. Today, the MMK Collection includes over 4,500 works of international art, ranging from the 1960s to the immediate present. In terms of its quality, diversity and incomparable profile, the MMK Collection stands out clearly from other museum collections. From the very outset, MMK has had to rely on the support of patrons and friends. In other words, over the last 20 years or so very close links have been forged to the citizens of Frankfurt, to whom the MMK is deeply indebted. It has likewise enjoyed the patronage of countless national and international corporations based in Frankfurt. It is this generous support that has enabled MMK to fulfill its duties as an educational institution and a museum.

The Auer Dult is characteristic of Munich, the Bavarian capital. The history of the popular fair with its folkloric flair can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Nowadays the event is organized by the Munich Tourist Office. Three times a year, the locals flock to the Mariahilfplatz, in the part of town called the "Au", which means "meadow" or "pasture": here they can walk around at leisure, shop for bargains, have a bite to eat and enjoy a good time. During the "Dult", the fairground, which spreads over 20,000 square meters, becomes an island in the heart of the city, alive with conversation and congeniality. Children young and old enjoy going on the bumper cars, the boat-like swings, the merry-go-round or the ferris wheel.

The Eric Gilston 'Life Skills' Column
TRUST - Who can you trust?
I
am writing this article the day after it was announced that two top athletes tested positive for banned drugs. This is not something new to sport, but it just emphasises how competitive sport has become that, in my view, some sportspeople have to resort to cheating to gain that winning edge. However, the question has to be asked, “How aware were they that they were taking BANNED drugs, or was it their coaches who were the guilty ones in giving them these drugs?” The former Trinidad and Tobago athlete Ato Boldon added: "An athlete is trusting of the person he is buying the supplements from, or the coach, or whoever is providing these supplements. "When you listen to Tyson, he is saying he put his faith in someone and they let him down." So trust plays an important
part in everyone’s life, but is it a ‘life skill’? I believe it is, because the web definition states, ”Life skills are a set of human skills acquired via teaching or direct experience that are used to handle problems and questions commonly...” So, we take trust on board to handle problems. Another good example of this relates to the past three weeks when I have been working with different groups of students on different business challenges. As a business coach, I want the students to feel empowered and to know that whatever solution they come up with to the problem they’ve been given, then it is THEIR solution. I put total 100% trust in their ability to work hard during the week, either on their own, in small groups and as one total group. It is my role to facilitate the process, and to ask relevant questions to the students to make sure that they consider
all possibilities rather than just go for the first thing that comes into their heads. The students need to have total trust in me as their business coach from the start of the week when we first meet, right through to the very end when they make the presentation of their findings. The same should apply to the athletes, who take on board a whole team of advisors, from an agent right through to a dietician. In the light of what has taken place, it would appear that the athlete’s trust has been abused, and therefore raises another point for this level of sport? Maybe, the athlete should not trust his team but instead be totally aware of what is going on to help him/her to achieve their goals. If this is the case, then I personally find this situation very sad. I know the great satisfaction that I get when I see a group of students who
I have worked with for a week, and who have trusted me to bring the very best out of them, perform to the highest level. Why can’t the team helping the athletes do the same? It is now coming up to the start of the football season, and the merry go round of football transfers is taking place. Once again, the word trust comes into play. I know that there are many good agents out there, but how many players are putting total trust in their agents finding them the best club that fits them from numerous angles, rather than just financial gain? Trust must be considered as a very key ‘life skill’ and one that is worth acquiring. However, the choice is yours. What do you think? If you would like to know more about Trust, then please feel free to contact me at: eric@thebrit.co.uk

Health & Wellbeing By: Sam Gannon
Loneliness E
veryone suffers from loneliness at some point in their lives - whether they are completely alone or in a crowd of people. Yet, experts believe there are two different interpretations of the condition. The first centres on feelings associated with loneliness such as emptiness and solitude. In contrast, the second interpretation is believed by many to be the brain’s way of telling a person that their current situation is not good for them and that they need to go out and make social contacts. It is very much a case of “you’re alone and therefore vulnerable whereas if you are with people you are in a ‘herd environment’ and therefore much more protected”. The feeling of loneliness can be triggered by many different factors
in Germany
such as lack of friends and acquaintances, lack of close mutual support, depression, relationship breakups, birth of a child, moving away and living in places with small or scattered communities. There are also physiological factors such as anxiety and being housebound due to infirmity and/or ill health. Loneliness can be transient or chronic. The transient condition is regarded as being in a ‘state’ and usually environmentally triggered. It is generally a shortterm condition and can be sparked by an event such as moving house. Once the individual has settled in and made new friends, the feeling disappears. However, chronic loneliness is seen as a ‘trait’ and sufferers would feel lonely whether alone or with a thousand other people. In real terms, it does not matter what is going on
around them as the feeling of loneliness persists which in turn can lead to greater psychological problems. Today’s lifestyles also greatly impact on how we perceive loneliness. In the 1900’s, families were larger, self supporting and provided a vast support network. However, in today’s culture, families are more fragmented and distant and with so many people living alone, it is small wonder that large numbers feel so isolated. Friendships have also changed, many being transient, and in a study the majority of those questioned stated that their partner or spouse was not only their closest friend but their only confidante thus increasing the risks if the relationship should end through death or breakup. Another interesting factor is that many lonely people turn to the internet
to help alleviate their feelings and many will start a conversation thread with, ‘I am lonely and won’t anyone speak to me’, making them vulnerable to predators. There are both mental and physical side-effects to loneliness including the risk of a stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, depression, poor decision making, alcohol and substance abuse and addiction, constant fatigue, insomnia and overwhelming feelings of being helpless, useless and alone which can lead to thoughts of suicide or the act itself. But what can you do? While many advocate counselling and tablets to help alleviate the symptoms, others have adopted a more 'hands on' approach by telling people that it is the brain's way of saying something is seriously wrong and the individual needs to do
something about it. Many experts suggest taking up a new socially interactive hobby. This may sound daunting but the chances are you will be with like-minded people thus making conversation and friendships easier to initiate. Others have undertaken volunteer and charity work thus creating a wider social circle, the chance to meet lots of different people, to contribute to a group or community which in turn will help strengthen self esteem, conversational and listening skills. Unfortunately, those who are lonely don’t want to listen to other people due to their overwhelming desire to talk. But, remember, listening is vitally important
as people are quickly turned off by someone who is permanently in ‘send’ mode. Relax, respond to their conversations either verbally or non verbally and your time will come to respond and who knows the person you are talking to could be just as lonely as you are, a future best friend or partner. One last thing, expect the best. It’s been found that those suffering expect to be rejected. Believe in yourself and remain positive and you will meet like-minded people. But, whether your condition is transient or chronic, if you are suffering from loneliness or know someone who is, try and seek help and encourage others to do so.

Number Please By: John Ware
I
n the late 1930s, my sister worked as an operator at one of London’s largest telephone exchanges. She was one of lines of young girls working their shift day or night connecting all and sundry to the number they required. Very efficient. The telephone then was a simple affair, large, heavy and usually coloured black, resting on its cradle until picked up until you received a pleasant young female voice requesting your ‘number please’. Things have moved on a bit since those tranquil days and now the telephone is a
bit more complicated. Our phone is within my reach as I write. Apart from the numbers for direct dialling there are 21 other buttons for one’s use. I have never used any of them, simply because I have not the vaguest idea what they are for. Phone tapping, to use the American expression, has been used in the USA since they were first installed there. A simple enough method. An ‘official’ arrives to inspect your phone. The mouthpiece is unscrewed and a tiny piece of electronic device, about as large and as flat as the
old English halfpenny, is placed inside the mouthpiece. The FBI and CIA together with major Police centres, all used this method of ‘tapping’. J. Edgar Hoover, then head of the FBI, admitted that he had files and tapes on the private lives of major politicians apart from criminals such as the Mafioso. Nothing sacred then and in some States these recordings were admissible for evidence in courts of law. England, it seems, was free of all these ‘goings on’ - until now, when the flood gates opened up on the phone hacking by the
News of The World. This so called newspaper was a misnomer right from its very first issue. Nothing else but a scandal sheet. Certainly, no business man worth his salt would be seen with a copy folded under his arm. And yet it enjoyed the largest circulation of all the tabloids. People love to read sleaze
and scandal and the News of The World provided it. Just how did they manage to listen in to private conversations at will? - Even it seems royalty was no exception. And how long had it all been going on? So far, these facts are not forthcoming. The only good thing about it all was the closing down of this
disgrace to the good name of journalism. Now, of course, we have to listen to the apologies of the people at the centre of it all. A bit late for that Mr. Murdoch. Can it happen again? If another rag similar to the News Of The World ever gets going again, yes, it probably will.

acism, by definition, is where one race considers itself better than another or one team or one individual, etc.; yet it would appear to me that during my research that almost all think that racism exist only between black and white, which, of course, is rubbish; if you want proof go to a Rangers v Celtic game! My own view is that a person should be judged by his or her actions and that their background, religion or the colour of their skin should never be a factor. So, why do ‘good doer’ politicians of all parties and at all levels practise racism in an effort to eradicate it? They bring in laws and bylaws forcing companies to practise racism. A company must employ so many of this colour and so many of that colour, so many of this religion so many of that one, so many gays so many lesbians, etc., etc., etc. Hang on, all ‘one colour’ could be gay… do you then have to employ only straight people for the other colour? And so on and so forth. Then the situation arises where you only have one vacancy left and due to your quotes you must give it to a Jew who is white and is a Buddhist despite the fact that he cannot read or
write he gets the job ahead of all the highly qualified applicants because he is a white, etc., This is legal racism and obviously leads all those who did not get the job to become racist. What has this to do with sport, I hear you ask? A good question with no easy answer, but in an effort to answer, I will concentrate on British football with one noticeable exception. All policies in life start at the top before working their way down to the bottom; for instance, how would the communist uprising have succeeded in Russia if the intellectuals had not used the ruling class’s middle management structure to inflame the masses? The same principal applies in sport. Racism in British sport is a fairly modern occurrence. The first known black man to play at the highest level was Andrew Watson for Queens Park - then the top team in Scotland, born in British Guiana the son of a Scottish plantation manager and a local girl, he was sent to Britain for his education. He made his debut for Scotland in 1881 and eventually captained his country. However, his work took him to England and he was immediately dropped
never to play for Scotland again; it would seem that the Scottish selectors would only select players who played in Scotland. Racism from the top? In the 1960s, the greatest battle against racism so far, was won. Tom Cartwright, an English fast bowler selected in the squad to tour South Africa, was injured and was replaced by Basil D´Oliviera. Basil was one of the most gifted all-rounders of his day - or any other day if it comes to that, and should have been included in the original squad. However, he was a Cape coloured and was not welcomed in South Africa, so the MCC had decided to omit him rather than endanger the tour. What the MCC had not counted on was the outraged response to his omission by both the British population and the British Press. When Cartwright, a fast bowler, withdrew, it seemed natural that a fast bowler should replace him but they had to select Basil or all hell would have descended upon them. South Africa duly cancelled the tour and they became outcasts in the international sports arena until apartheid was crushed in the 1990s. Modern racism started to occur around the 1990s
Former England bowler Tom Cartwright
when the second generation of British footballers of West Indian decent began to appear, they enhanced every team they played in including the National Team. Small pockets of bigots started to abuse non-white British players, but like the hooligans before them these bigots will be removed from our terraces in the same way as fans and clubs worked together to identify the hooligan ring leaders and removing them from the ground, so eventually will bigots be banished. This is the top acting in a responsible way and working together with the fans, when identified they prosecute and if found guilty ban them for life. Unhappily, we cannot remove racism from the field
of play. Hooligans still prowl the pitches of our country committing vicious tackles always apologising but never
repenting and so: Will racism survive on the pitch until the players themselves say, as I, do Enough is Enough!
Former England cricketing legend Basil D'Oliveira
EXTRA TIME July Answers
Mal Davies Q1. A player taking a goal kick stumbles and only kicks the ball 5 yds. A defender and an attacker race into the penalty area. The defender recklessly fouls the attacker who just manages to toe-poke the ball into goal. The referee: (a) orders the kick to be retaken; (b) awards the goal and cautions (yellow card) the defender; (c) cautions the defender (yellow card) and orders the goal kick to be retaken; (d) awards a corner kick.
Q2. The referee has awarded a direct free kick 30 yds from goal. The ball hit the crossbar and returned to the kicker to head the ball to a team-mate in an onside position to score. The referee will award: (a) a goal; (b) a retake of the free kick; (c) an indirect free kick against the kicker; (d) a drop ball. Q3. True or False: The fourth official determines the amount of stoppage time at the end of each period of play.
A1. (c) award a direct free kick against the kicker. The ball is in play from the kickoff as soon as it is kicked and moves forward. By picking the ball up, the kicker is guilty of two offences : playing the ball a second time (indirect free kick) and deliberate handball (direct free kick). The most serious is penalised but no caution (yellow card) as it did not deny an opponent a tactical advantage in this instance. A2. False. The referee can only signal for a substitute to come on the field of play during a stoppage in play. A3. (c) 100 yards. The minimum length of a touchline is 100 yards (or 90 metres).

Kakuro Puzzle Kakuro puzzles are like a cross between a crossword and a Sudoku puzzle. Instead of letters, each block contains the digits 1 through 9. The same digit will never repeat within a word. If you add the digits in a word, the sum will be the number shown in the clue. Clues are shown on the left and right sides of “across” words, and on the top and bottom sides of “down” words.

The Genie and the Irish Bic Lighter Mick and Paddy were fishing on the Irish shoreline when Mick pulled out a cigar. Finding he had no matches, he asked Paddy for a light. “Ya, sure, I tink I haff a lighter,” Paddy replied and then reaching into his tackle box, he pulled out a Bic lighter 10 inches long.
“My God, man!” exclaimed Mick, taking the huge Bic lighter in his hands. “Where'd yew git dat monster?” ”Well”, replied Paddy, “I got it from my Genie.”
Solutions 1
“You haff a fe****g Genie?” Mick asked. “Ya, sure. It's right here in my tackle box,” says Paddy. “Could I see him?” Paddy opens his tackle box and sure enough, out pops the Genie.
2
Addressing the Genie, Mick says: “Hey dere! I'm a good pal of your master. Will you grant me one wish?” “Yes, I will,” says the Genie.

4
So, Mick asks the Genie for a million bucks. The Genie disappears back into the tackle box leaving Mick sitting there waiting for his million bucks. Shortly, the Irish sky darkens and is filled with the sound of a million ducks flying directly overhead. Over the roar of the one million ducks Mick yells at Paddy: “What the hell? I asked for a million bucks, not a million ducks!” Paddy answers: 'Ya, I forgot to tell yew dat da Genie is hard of hearing. Do yew really tink I asked for a 10-inch Bic?'
