Berlin buy-back plan In May, the House of Representative debated, at the request of the Left parties, whether or not to buy back the ownership of the gas and electricity services from the private sector suppliers to the city; also considered was the repurchase of the Berlin Water Works (BWB). The main shareholder to negotiate with is the French group Veolia which owns 24.95% of the BWB. The Veolia RWE Group is also involved, which upto the end of 2012, had purchased from the Government €618
million of land. It will depend on arbitration how much will have to be paid back for the repurchase, but a deciding factor is the court’s decision where it can force the permanent reduction of prices which will reduce the profitability of the BWB and therefore the profitability of Veolia’s shares. Electricity is also on the agenda with concessions becoming available to bid for in 2015. Currently held by Vattenfall, for the power grid, should the ruling go against them in
favour of the state, then the state would have to pay about one billion euros. The Government had planned to budget this amount in the next two-year budget, based on a refinance package of 20 years. The gas supplier for the city is Gasag, but again the future plans are to open up bids to the market, where two successful bidders would run the network. Due to its nuclear fuel connections, Vattenfall is not allowed to bid. J.C.

Berlin welcomes Barack The famous visit by President Kennedy and his “I am a Berliner” speech will coincide with Barack Obama’s first visit as President, to the capital city of Germany by 50 years less one week. On the 18th and 19th of June (this month), President Obama will meet with the German
Chancellor, following his visit to Northern Ireland to attend the G-8 summit. Although no specifics have been given of what is on the agenda, it is thought to include discussions on a broad range of bilateral and global issues. This is not Barack Obama’s first visit to
the country; in 2008, while campaigning for his Presidency, he visited Berlin and made his speech at the Victory Column; as President he has also visited BadenBaden and Kehal as part of a NATO summit, Weimar, Dresden and Landstuhl. J.C.
The Queen has given permission to loan part of her Crown Jewels collection for an exhibition, “Hannover Rulers on the Throne of England 17141837”, but known under its slogan “When the Royals came from Hannover”. The organisers requested items from 140 different entities around the world, totalling over one thousand exhibits showing at the National Museum,
Hannover. The exhibition has a budget of €5.5 million, with items on show from George I – IV including paintings, medals, furniture and important documents. There
is expectation that the Queen or the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the opening ceremony.

Bremen buoyant on immigration Contrary to common belief, immigration, or because of its strong economy and labour market, “economic migration”, Germany welcomes its new people. Often associated with poverty migration, the peoples from Bulgaria and Romania who come to work in Germany are more often than not professionals who fill gaps in the labour market that the economy needs. This also applies to the quality of students who wish to complete their studies here. It must be working because Germany is
strong and areas such as Bremen have not seen such an influx since 1995, but 2012 saw this previous level surpassed with the Federal Republic receiving 966,000 new immigrant aliens and a further 115,000 German returnees. The main influx came from Poland (176,000), Romania (116,000), Bulgaria (59,000) and an increase from southern EU countries of 45 percent (Greece and Portugal was up 43 percent on the previous year). Compared to last year, Bremen itself has seen a
17 percent rise in immigration, which has a double benefit for the local economy; On the one hand, many immigrants prefer the countryside and rural areas to the city and so stop the damaging “bleeding” of rural areas, but more importantly according to the head of the Bremen International Chamber of Commerce, Volkmar Lord, that he expected to see an increased trend in professional and skilled workers coming to Germany. A Kingdom within a Republic Classroom crisis
Plans are underway for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to expand its development in Westend, Berlin. Here, the Saudi Government is planning a school for embassy children, as well as a residential quarter for its diplomats. Currently, the Saudis bought the old empty school next to the Olympic Stadium, in 2010, which they wish to redevelop with a timescale of 18 to 24 months. In addition to this, the Saudi Government bought land between Angerburger and Tharauer Avenues in 2011 on which they plan to build
residential housing for their diplomats. The school will not come under the local curriculum for Germany, since it has limited supervision and the teaching is based on the Saudi curriculum, therefore, the school is only to be attended by children of diplomats. There is an option to extend the school services to non-diplomatic children but this depends on whether the school applies for and is accepted to run the International Baccalaureate. It is yet to be decided whether the diplomatic residential area will be flats only or not. These
questions and that of the construction time are still dependent on the final ideas and recommendations of the architect and engineer, but, according to the Urban Development department
of the CharlottenburgWilmersdorf Council, it can be confirmed that the apartments and houses are to be reserved for embassy staff only. J.C.
In Hamburg, there is a crisis in the classroom. The crisis revolves around the fact that there are not enough qualified teaching staff to take care of the growth in primary school education. With an increase of 60 new schooling facilities coming into service after the summer season, bringing the total in the Hamburg area to 190, demand is certainly outstripping supply. The main area where staffing support is missing, concerns teachers and teacher assistants for
the afternoon sessions of the classroom curriculum. There are on average 3 applicants for every opening compared to 30 a few years ago, which, in itself, creates a big recruitment issue, with no immediate solution in sight, this bottleneck could last up to 2 years. The city authorities have increased its training capacity for these educational posts but they realise that in the short term it is not enough to resolve the crisis.

BMW puts more FIZ into its future BMW is planning an expansion of 15,000 jobs at its Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ) in Munich, growing it by 80% by the year 2050. The research centre located at MilbertshofenAm Hart shows a massive commitment to the Munich
area by BMW, who already employ around 34,000 people in the area. BMW are working closely with the local planning office and community in their current and future planning applications, since they wish to further expand by between
500,000 and 800,000 sq metres. The planning applications, when complete, will then be presented by the city council along with concepts and designs from six architectural companies. J.C.
Caterpillars cause chaos The processionary caterpillar is causing chaos in certain areas. It has to be controlled and in the Potsdam area this is done by spraying the insecticide Dipel ES from helicopters. Not all areas allow the insecticide to be used from the air and a more labourintensive programme of hand-spraying with biocides takes place. Even this has restrictions and the caterpillars are extremely resilient with
both of these processes having a success rate of 70 to 75 percent, so then the rest has to be done by hand. This all sounds very impressive to remove a small caterpillar from its dwelling, which are commonly found in the parklands and forests that surround areas popular with the public. The problem occurs when the caterpillar enters its third phase from May to mid June, where its sting-

ADAC buses to be sent by post The chairman of ADAC, which has 18.5 million members, has launched a city-to-city bus service in conjunction with the German Post service. The main focus of routes will be on cities and towns with populations in excess 200,000 inhabitants.
To maintain this long distance bus service, over 300 vehicles will be part of the fleet, with ticket costs undercutting those of some train services and no reservation fees expected, the appeal of this service is expected to grow quickly. There has been consider-
able interest in this type of service since long distance bus transport was liberalised in January 2013. The first service, which was announced last month, will run between Cologne and Munich. J.C.
ing hairs become airborne. When breathed in, these hairs can cause severe skin and mucous membrane irritations, leading to asthma and allergic shock reactions. The caterpillars favour the oak tree and stay close to their nest but when their numbers swell to plague proportions, as in this case, then severe action has to be taken. J.C.
Berlin rises above the rest for rents Today, the average rent in Berlin is €8.40 per square metre, which represents a 20% increase since 2011 - with some areas, such as Berlin-Mitte and Wilmersdorf demanding rents of €12.90 and €10.10 per square metre respectively. The increase in rents has been fuelled by demand from a growing population and a slow-down in the construction industry which has created a sup-
The mayor of Cologne, Jürgen Rother, loves to breathe clean air and has signed an agreement to expand the city’s green belt, which will conserve it while creating more space for recreation. This has been done to protect the large area ‘green belt’ surrounding and running through the city and also to support the city’s existing parks’ department, which, in conjunction with the Cologne
free of aircraft noise. The lowest rents in Berlin are found in Heller village and Marzahn on the eastern outskirts of the city with an average rent per square metre of €6. J.C.
Berlin-Pankow parking goes sideways Finding a parking space around the Berlin Prenzlauer Berg area is no fun. Now, there is a solution for the smaller cars. Owners of cars like the Smart, Panda and similar sized cars would be allowed to park across a car space instead of along it. It is estimated that this way you could fit 4 mini cars into two slots. Although it may seem biased toward smaller car drivers, it would certainly help to ease the strain on the parking spaces in this area. J.C.

Bid to row solo from Japan to Canada A British adventurer has begun her second attempt to become the first person to row solo from Japan to Canada, her first venture having been cut short last year by a ferocious tropical storm that capsized her boat more than
20 times. The attempt is part of 27-year-old Sarah Outen’s ‘London2London: Via the World expedition’, which will see her row, cycle and kayak a continuous loop of the planet and raise £100,000 for charity.
Overseas residents to lose pensions People living overseas – some of whom have never been to Britain – will no longer be entitled to a British state pension based on the work history of their spouse. Around 220,000 overseas residents receive the payment at a cost of £410-million a year. The measure was included in the Queen’s Speech recently and will prevent new claims from 2016.
Existing pensioners will not be affected. Pensions Minister, Stave Webb told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: “You pay National Insurance, you get a pension, but folk who have never been here but happen to be married to someone who has are getting pensions. Most people would think that is not what National Insurance is for.”
Economy stronger Bank of England Governor, Sir Mervyn King is expected to provide an improved forecast of Britain’s economic outlook following the publication of data that suggesting the so-called “doubledip” recession in Britain never really happened.
Sir Mervyn has been at the helm during particularly turbulent times for the British economy and he is to be succeeded by Mark Carney in July. He steps down as construction and manufacturing appears to be picking up and services continue to do well.

“Sign up to new tax treaties” Cameron tells British islands A mid fears of tighter tax measures, British overseas territories have received a letter from Prime Minister David Cameron asking them to sign up to international treaties on tax. He has written to ten territories and crown dependencies, including the Cayman Islands and the Isle of Man, following claims that some are used for tax avoidance or evasion. A G8 summit in June is expected to see a push for tighter tax measures and Mr Cameron has urged dependencies to get their houses in order. Those who have received the letter are Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the
Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Anguilla, Montserrat, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Jersey, Guernsey and
the Isle of Man. Some have become major centres for international business, but Mr Cameron
has told them “lower taxes are only sustainable if what is owed is actually paid.”
Sale of Royal Mail will go ahead
Too much television food makes you fat?
The efficiency of the Royal Mail in Britain is often taken for granted and it has served as a model for many postal services throughout the world. But the Government has now decided to privatise the institution and the move has come under attack from the opposition Labour Party, which has accused the coalition of holding a fire sale to raise badly-needed finances.
If you have seen British and American passengers disembarking from a cruise liner you might well have concluded that many of them are overweight, and now scientists are claiming that television, as well as fine food on the ocean waves, could be connected with obesity. The experts at Coventry Un iver sit y suggest that the celebrity chefs
Ministers are pressing ahead with the sell-off despite opposition from postal workers who say a sale this year will not deliver best value for the taxpayer. A Government spokesman said the Royal Mail was an important part of Britain’s social and economic fabric and would only be sold if it gets maximum value for the taxpayer.

It is a fact that there are a large number of programmes for foodies on British television and I believe it is much the same in America. They found 87 recipes from the TV chefs were substantially short of healthy eating guidelines, just 13 percent using healthy ingredients.

Anti-European Union sentiment has seen a surge in support for the UK Independence Party with a recent opinion poll putting the party on 20 percent. The opinion poll for Britain’s Observer newspaper put Labour on 37 percent, the Conservatives on 27 percent and the Liberal Democrats on 7
percent. While mid-term polls are a little misleading, they do provide an indication of how voters are thinking. Interestingly, 49 percent of voters suggested that Mr Cameron’s offer of a European referendum would be important to them at the next general election.
Rod Stewart has scored a UK ‘number one’ with an album of original material inspired by the writing of his autobiography.
The new album is entitled ‘Time’ and the last time Rod enjoyed similar success was in 1979 with a compilation of greatest hits.
Immigration hits ten year low The number of immigrants coming into Britain has fallen to its lowest level since 2001 with fewer coming to study at language or further education schools and a fall in those joining their families. However, those going

Mismatched Bikini Tops and Bottoms
Here in Germany the sun is shining and the days are long, so, let’s talk swimwear... ho said it’s hard to express yourself on the beach? Swimwear trends move more slowly and usually are influenced by other fashion trends but it is important to pick the right one to emphasise your curves expressing you in the best possible way! The choice is a little limited... a one-piece or two!!!! I suggest if you are of a more traditional build, stick with an allin-one. There are lots of prints and super loud colours and, whatever your shape, I think bright and bold is always very acceptable by the pool or on the beach. There are a few top trending ideas to help you choose your summer 2013 beachwear...

Greek Goddess Swimwear Style

hat could be sexier than looking like a Greek goddess on the beach? This style gives a chance to add some volume in places that sometimes need it!!! If you go for this look, you can play with colours enhancing your tan in bright orange, pink or electric blue.
Summertime Hair... Sleek and Straight Well, it’s time to dig out those straighteners again ladies; after several seasons out of favour, superstraight locks are back in vogue. Add interest to your sleek look by twisting two strands from the front of your hair and securing them at the back with kirby grips. I love this look. The Bob is Back... Lots of celebs are opting for a new look and going for the classic bob in long and short style. So, who can wear the bob? Anyone with a nice jaw-line and neck will look good in a bob. If you have a round face, a long bob is a better option for you. As for hair texture, bobs work best on thin to medium hair. If you have curly
hair, a bob will turn into a triangle on you, unless you get layers cut in and the ends texturised. If you have fine hair, ask your stylist for a "graduated bob", which are stacked layers cut shorter in the back, and longer in the front, giving needed body and height at the crown. Happy summer time and have fun choosing new swimwear and get a new sleek summer hair do to finish that poolside look.

Sommelier Secrets
By Veronica Meadows
The Importance of a Good Corkscrew A
lthough cork was used as a stopper for jars and amphoras by the Greeks and Romans, it seemed to fall out of favour as the Roman Empire collapsed and really didn’t resurface again until the 1700s in England. It was then that the first references to corkscrews were made. In fact, the first known corkscrew patent was granted in England in 1795. However, many historians believe that the device was originally used to open bottles of beer and cider. Early corkscrews were modelled on ‘gun worms’ which were used to remove bullets stuck in gun barrels. The worm had a simple wooden handle attached to it and hey presto the first corkscrew was invented, and this type of model is still used today. A German, Carl Wienke, is believed to have invented the commonly known ‘waiters friend’ or ‘sommelier knife’ corkscrew and was granted the patent in 1882. He was later granted patents in England and France but it was not until 1979 that an American, Herbert Allen from Huston, Texas, invented the screwpull, which today is found in most households. Yet, despite its relative newness, there are many different types of corkscrews on the market and what you decide to use
is really down to personal preference. But just remember that cheap imitations are readily available so it’s worth shopping around and finding which corkscrew suits you and your budget; because if you are serious about your wine, then you will be serious about your corkscrew. When purchasing a new corkscrew, one of the most important things to consider is length. Yep, length matters because if the ‘screw’ is too short it will not be able to pull longer corks (normally used in more expensive bottles of wine) which can lead to broken corks and embarrassment as you nonchalantly try to stab the remaining piece of cork and drag it out. Another consideration is width and again size matters because if the screw is too thick it will simply break the cork apart and leave you hunting for a sieve so you strain off all the lumpy bits! Most waiters and sommeliers recommend that you use either a waiter’s knife or a screwpull as they are capable of pulling the most stubborn of corks out of a bottle. Screwpulls are also a good choice as they require little effort as opposed to the straight pull type. Another consideration is making sure that your corkscrew will fit all types of wine bottle and that it can remove both
natural and synthetic corks. There is nothing so embarrassing when wining and dining your nearest and dearest to find that your corkscrew won’t fit the expensive bottle of wine you’ve just purchased for the occasion. Relying on your old friend ‘brute force’ to knock
the cork into the bottle is all very well but you will still have to hunt around for the sieve to remove all the extra pieces. And believe it or not, pulling a cork out of a bottle should be a pleasurable experience! So, before you get carried away make sure you practice your corkscrew technique. And remember, when you insert the tip of the ‘screw’ into the cork, not too press too hard as you really want to hook the cork and then gently allow it to draw itself onto the screw rather than stabbing it to death. Once you’ve learned to hook the cork, pulling will suddenly become so much easier, but as I say, it all takes practice… So, until next month… happy pulling!

Open Tuesday – Sunday
MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt/Main is one of the world’s most important museums of contemporary art and, despite being a relative newcomer on the scene, has in the space of less than two decades established a firm place for itself in the international museum scene. Ever since MMK first opened in 1991, it has played a major part in the cultural and social life of the city. With its post-modern architecture, which is today considered quite exemplary, the MMK likewise offers a major platform for culture in Frankfurt, ensuring the city will never again lack a museum for contemporary art. Today, the MMK Collection includes over 4,500 works of international art, ranging from the 1960s to the immediate present. In terms of its quality, diversity and incomparable profile, the MMK Collection stands out clearly from other museum collections. From the very outset, MMK has had to rely on the support of patrons and friends. In other words, over the last 20 years or so very close links have been forged to the citizens of Frankfurt, to whom the MMK is deeply indebted. It has likewise enjoyed the patronage of countless national and international corporations based in Frankfurt. It is this generous support that has enabled MMK to fulfill its duties as an educational institution and a museum.

Town Foundation Festival The origin of Munich goes back to the 8th century and to a tiny monastic settlement known as "bei den Munichen", which is to say: by the monks. However, the actual founder of Munich is Duke Henry the Lion. He destroyed a toll bridge over the Isar near Föhring and then built another one in "Munichen" where he collected his own tolls. Henry's act was finally publicly recognized, thus giving Munich its official "date of birth": June 14th, 1158. The City of Munich is celebrating this anniversary with a 2-day festival for its citizens and visitors. During the two days Marienplatz will offer many attractions, e.g. a stage with perfomances of musicians, dancers and other artists, a craftsmen market and a special area for children.

12 May - 2 June, 2013
The 21st December 2012 was a very special date: many people saw this date as the day on which the world will end, according to the accurate Maya calendar. But the Maya calendar actually records only the end of the thirteenth 400 year cycle since the creation of the world on this date. Join us on the trail of Central America's Maya, who built incredible palaces, pyramids and ball courts between the 3rd and 10th century in Mexico, Guatemala and Belize. The exhibition explains the complicated calendar, provides insight into the unique hieroglyphic script using interactive games and presents the world of Maya nobility through precious objects. Objects are being exhibited from collections from the Leiden Museum (Holland) and Stuttgart Museum, including painted cocoa pots and plates as well as intricate figurines, which illustrate court life.

GIVING BACK
- Why should you?
H
e’s known throughout the world and on the 16th May, he announced his retirement. No, it was not Barack Obama or David Cameron. In actual fact, it was the footballer David Beckham. After 20 years of playing football at the highest level, he decided to call it a day. So, what next? Well he has quoted that it is time to give back, but he has not specified in what way or where. So, we can all speculate, but my money is on him focussing on his own football academies and grooming the youngsters of the future, either here in the UK or in the USA. David will recall those people who helped him in his formative years and the impact that they had on his life. However, a lot has happened in his 20 years of playing, during which time he would have accumulated some fantastic knowledge
from different managers, coaches and players from around the world, and now is the right time to pull this all together and ‘give back’ to the footballers of the future. I know from my days of being a football coach, and now when I conduct life and business coaching, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing a change in people and helping them move forward in their life to reach their true potential. It is interesting to note that a lot of people believe that the time for ‘giving back’ is either when you finish your career or you decide to retire. Why? This does not make sense to me. I remember when I left University, I saw an advertisement for a football manager of an Under 16 football team. At the tender age of 22, I thought that it was time that I gave back something to a sport that I had enjoyed for many years. Ha, ha!! Yes, I got the job, and enjoyed
passing on my knowledge to these young boys, who really wanted to learn and all grew very quickly. So much so, that before they were 17, I put the team into an adults league and watched them come top of their division in their first season. ‘Giving back’ at such a young age was the catalyst for me doing this throughout my life. So, what about you? Time to get the mirror out, hold it in front of your face, and ask yourself, “what do I do currently to ‘give back’ something?” You can then ask yourself, “why do I need to ‘give back’ anything?” Let me tell you where I come from on this one, and share the benefits with you:• You would have been helped by someone at some stage of your life, and it’s now pay-back time; • You have some great knowledge about something, so why not share it with others, so they can benefit; • You may not ooze
confidence, but just see the difference in your conf idence when you start to ‘give back’; • See the change in those you help and realise that you can make a difference, and reap the reward. The time has come for you to ‘give back’. This could
be at work, in your community, at your local church, at your sports club, etc. etc. Please give this some serious thought. To me, ‘giving back’ must be considered a major ‘life skill’ and one that is worth acquiring. However, the choice is yours, but
the benefits quoted in this article are worth thinking about. What do you think? If you would like to know more about Giving Back, then please feel free to contact me at: eric@thebrit.co.uk

Health & Wellbeing By: Sam Gannon
Laughter is Good for You! Believe it or not, but laughter is infectious; in fact, it is thought to be more contagious than a cough, sniffle or a sneeze. Laughter can bring people together, increase general, physical and mental wellbeing and create greater intimacy between loved-ones and co-workers as well as control pain. And one of its most important attributes is that it can bring people of all nationalities together while being cheap, easy to use and environmentally friendly...
A
s one professional commented, the power of laughter and a sense of humour are the most powerful tools we posses which can support both our mental and physical health and wellbeing. The unfortunate thing is that today many people have very little to laugh about but a daily dose of laughter can leave both you and your muscles feeling more relaxed for up to forty five minutes, can temporarily relieve pain and apparently protects your heart by increasing the flow of blood. On the emotional level, laughing puts joy and fun into life, can help reduce feelings of anxiety and fear, relieve stress - all of which contribute to an individual’s wellbeing but also helps in the workplace as those who laugh and have the ability to laugh find that they create stronger relationships with their peers and co-workers and attract more friends. Everyone knows that a good sense of humour can actually diffuse confrontational situations. In addition to keeping you physically healthy, laughing helps maintain your emotional strength as the ‘feel good’ factor stays with you long after the laughter subsides. Both laughing and a sense of humour not only enables you
in Germany
to feel good, it creates positivity, optimism as well as helping you through difficult times, situations, disappointments, loss and grief. Scientists believe that by simply hearing laughter your brain changes gear so that it becomes much more receptive which in turn increases your ability to join in the fun. Remember, if you are laughing you can’t feel anxious, angry or sad; laughter increases your energy levels by reducing stress; remember, stress makes you feel tired and drained. Laughing and laughter can also help you put things back into perspective especially if you can laugh at yourself which in turn allows you to see a situation for what it really is rather than something that has been blown out of all proportion because you have taken yourself too seriously. And… if that isn’t enough, laughter can really help in personal relationships as it helps to re-emphasise and strengthen the bond between two people, increase feelings of love and attachment as well as improve your communication and interpersonal skills with each other. We are all born with the ability to laugh and smile. Babies can smile when they are a few weeks
old and at a few months are able to laugh. While some have very little to laugh about, it is still possible to retain a sense of humour. Whenever possible, relax, let go and enjoy the moment, and if you are a little shy about doing this just take a few very easy steps. The first is to smile, relax and feel good about yourself and your environment and you will be surprised
at how many people smile back. Smile at silly, absurd and beautiful things. Allow yourself to feel happy or good about what you have seen. If you hear someone laugh, try and get closer to the source of amusement as in most cases people are always willing to share the joke or amusing situation and the more people there are to laugh about it the longer the laughter
will continue. Just as importantly, spend time with people who are fun to be around. If your friends are always down in the dumps then the chances are you will be too. Look for like-minded people and enjoy their sense of fun and let them enjoy yours. We all need a little infectious laughter and this is one disease that should be spread around - ha ha ha!

Should Boxing be Boxed? THE LEO SIMMONDS COLUMN
M
y own opinion of boxing is of two semi-naked men standing toe-to-toe with but one intention: to knock the living daylights out of the other (unless the fight has been ‘fixed’, but that’s for another time). In the other corner is the ‘businessman’ who charges – to normally peace loving solid members of the community - a princely sum just for the privilege of witnessing this barbaric act. Boxing, we know, has been around for well over
a century. Nobody is quite sure where it originated from, but the Yanks claim it for their own. The professional roots are buried in the bare-knuckle fights of the 19th century through to its modern day Gladiators. What we all know is that it is a poor man’s sport - if you are a competitor; a rich man’s sport - if you are an ‘OWNER’ and anything in between is a dog’s life. Hang on, I hear you say, haven’t you just justified the existence of boxing? Where else can a poor boy
get off the streets and aim for the top? How about being a doctor, a policeman, a banker, a salesman, a taxi driver or a dustbin man? There are many children from poor homes who occupy these professions, but how did they do it? Simply, the countries with the largest boxing fraternities also have free education to all who are prepared to utilise their own capabilities. They will each reach their own heights without the need to strip to the bare necessities, stand toe-to-toe and try to beat the crap out of each other! I hear the doubters say, WHY? What is wrong with two consenting adults squaring up to each other for the pleasure of the masses? A few blooded eyes, one or two broken noses or a ‘cauliflower ear’ or two - what’s the harm? We have all heard the saying, “Punch Drunk” - and it does not originate from drinking too much of my punch even if some misguided folks would disagree! ‘Punch Drunk’ was first coined as the title of an article written by Dr. Harrison Matland way back in 1928. This article brought to the attention of the American people the possibility of
brain damage caused by Traumatic Multiple Hemorrhages or in layman’s terms, brain damage, caused by too many head punches received during an average boxing career, making injuries such as a broken nose or blooded e y e s seem irrelevant.
In 1962, the American, Emile Griffith, was paired to fight the Cuban, Benny “the kid” Paret. It was their third fight; Paret had held the world waterweight crown on two separate occasions but this was to be his last fight. In round twelve, Griffith knock him stone out but he remained upright supported by the ropes. Griffith landed another thirteen punches on and around his head before the hapless referee, Ruby Goldstein finally stopped the fight. Paret died nine days later having never regained consciousness.
Unfortunately, for boxing, this was the first fight televised with a slow motion capability and the episode was played and replayed so many times that ‘free TV’ banned boxing altogether from its channels, a ban that would last for over a decade. Boxing also lost many fans that night and the ‘ban boxing’ fraternity was ready to move in for the kill. Fortunately for boxing, it got a shot in the arm just when it needed it from the Louisiana Lip, Cassius Clay or after his conversion to Islam, Muhammad Ali. He burst on to the scene with charisma, intelligence and wit (a first and last in boxing) and he alone kept boxing alive for over two decades and whenever the debate on boxing is debated, his career is always used as a shining example; sadly, no-one wants to expand on how he is today. He could have succeeded in many professions, he chose the one that would eventually destroy his quality of life. Let me say at this point that amateur boxing of three rounds of three minutes, with head protection, and the stopping of the contest should one boxer be dominant, is fine. In 1981,
the Norwegian Boxing Association agreed to a complete ban on professional boxing as a concession to allow the amateur game to continue, a ban that still stands today without consequences to the disadvantaged youth of Norway. In 1983, the American Medical Association and the World Medical Association condemned boxing as dangerous ‘sport’ and recommended it be banned worldwide - this was officially recorded at the World Medical Assembly of November 1983. Boxing fans will argue that there are serious injuries in all sports - and this is true – however, in non-blood sports, serious injuries are accidental and rarely end in death or brain damage. The Journal of Combative Statistics, in 2005, claimed that in the last five years there had been 53 deaths worldwide in boxing. How did a ‘sports statistics’ get into a ‘combative’ journal? Is it because it is not a sport but a barbaric act to fuel the blood lust of all those ‘upstanding citizens’ who wish to watch? Please, let us put boxing along with other blood sports such as fox hunting and bull fighting into a box and drop it into the deepest ocean on Earth!

Q1. At the kick off, the kicker only kicked the ball forward 6 inches, so he picks it up as he
wants to take it again. Does the referee: (a) have the kick off retaken; (b) award an indirect free kick against the kicker; (c) award a direct free kick against the kicker; (d) award a direct free kick and caution (yellow card) the kicker.
Q2. True or False: A substitute may come on the field of play at the halfway line upon a
signal from the referee while the ball is in play for a player who had gone off five minutes earlier for treatment but was unable to continue.
Q3. The minimum length of a touchline is: a) 90 yards; (b) 95 metres; (c) 100 yards; d) 105 metres.
A1. (a) send off (red card) both players and restart with an indirect free kick. If teammates exchange blows when the ball is in play, they must be sent off and an indirect free kick awarded to their opponents.
A2. (c) a goal kick. If a ball enters the opponents’ goal directly from an uncontested
dropped ball, the referee will not award a goal but a goal kick. Previous to this season the referee would have awarded a goal. By introducing this new decision, the International FA Board (our law makers, not FIFA) have avoided the opposition sportingly allowing their opponents to score from the kick-off.
A3. (b) square, rectangular, round, or elliptical. Goal-posts can only be one of four shapes and no other.

Kakuro Puzzle Kakuro puzzles are like a cross between a crossword and a Sudoku puzzle. Instead of letters, each block contains the digits 1 through 9. The same digit will never repeat within a word. If you add the digits in a word, the sum will be the number shown in the clue. Clues are shown on the left and right sides of “across” words, and on the top and bottom sides of “down” words.

petrol station owner in Dublin was trying to increase his sales. So, he put up a sign that read: 'Free Sex with Fill-Up.' Soon, Paddy pulled in, filled his tank and asked for his free sex. The owner told him to pick a number from 1 to 10. If he guessed correctly, he would get his free sex. Paddy guessed 8, and the proprietor said “You were close. The number was 7. Sorry. No sex this time.” A week later, Paddy, along with his friend Mick, pulled in for another fillup. Again he asked for his free sex. The proprietor again gave him the same story, and asked him to guess the correct number. Paddy guessed 2 this

Sailor, Soldier, Priest and Reformer An appreciation of the Rev. Canon Henry Bellairs MA JP RD [1790-1872) formerly Rector of Bedworth, Warwickshire by his great-great grandson, Guy ffarington Bellairs...
H
enry was the third child of Abel Walford Bellairs, a country banker of Lincolnshire. He was sent to Uppingham School where he became a hero-worshipper of Nelson, who came from a home not far away. This doubtless inspired him, when England was threatened by the French, to join the Royal Navy as a First Class Volunteer. Within a year of enlistment, he took part in the battle of Trafalgar. He was sent with an urgent despatch to his Admiral, who invited him to stay and fight aboard the Victory as battle was imminent. However, Henry elected to return and fight with his own comrades aboard HMS Spartiate, where, although a mere boy of fifteen years, he would have been responsible as Midshipman for one of the ship's cannon and its crew of six men. In those crucial days, boys were sent on men's errands, faute de mieux as happened again in our year of peril in 1940. Henry was wounded in the leg and arm, and was invalided out with an award of f20 from Lloyd's Patriotic Fund, and the coveted Sword of Honour as the best Midshipman of his term. Essentially practical in his outlook, he took up carpentry, blacksmithing and boxing - to some effect, as we shall see! Then he decided to try the Army, and was commissioned into his younger brother's regiment, the 15th. Hussars, then stationed at Dorchester. He also met Dorothy Mackenzie, a girl from a family of wealthy Jamaica planters, and they fell passionately in love. The match was not encouraged, but they persisted and finally were married in May, 1811 at Twickenham Church, shortly before his 21st. birthday. As his C.O. did not consent to such an early marriage, he had to resign
his commission upon becoming engaged, so his Army service was brief and of little interest. Henry now decided to get himself the orthodox gentleman's education that war service had so far prevented, and went up to Oxford University. As there was no RAF in those days, he opted for the remaining gentlemanly profession....the Church, and was ordained in 1817. In 1819 he was made Curate of Bedworth, a Midlands town in acute economic difficulties. The irresponsible Rector [the playboy son of the Patron] had departed for Ceylon, leaving the church empty and dilapidated,

and the schools almost without pupils. A Government report stated at a later date that: "Fights amongst the men were incessant; even the women stripped in the streets to fight; bull-baiting, cockfighting, drinking and gambling and disorder of every kind had full sway and it was impossible to pass free from insult through the mixed gangs of colliers, weavers and others....the surpassing grossness and degradation of the place obtained for it the proverbial designation of Black Bedworth. But the Minister [Bellairs] made successful war upon the public
houses by information before his fellow magistrates; made himself respected even amongst the roughest mobs by the energy with which he attacked the prevailing disorders; and compelled the parish authorities to the rigorous performance of their duties, at the same time that he wrought unceasingly at his own". Indeed, during his early days, he came upon two women, stripped to the waist, fighting in the centre of a jeering circle of men. He was about to separate the combatants when a burly miner hit him in the face, shouting 'Parson, what right have you to interfere?': a fight followed in which Henry's boxing technique [and a height of 6ft. 2] enabled him to give his adversary a sound beating. He often said, that fight did more for the reformation of the Parish than his sermons or anything else that he had done! In 1830, on the death of the absentee Rector, he was at last given the living that he so richly merited, meanwhile, the congregation had increased so remarkably that 348 new seats had to be provided, and an organ was installed soon afterwards. in 1850 the church had to be further enlarged, Henry [or his wealthy and devoted wife] paying for most of the work. This wonderful man finally retired in 1864, living in Paignton until his death in 1872 at 81 years. He was known to his family as "Henry the Great": in the custom of the times, he ruled his household as a benevolent dictator. He had 13 children of whom 12 survived: the sons went into the Army, Navy or Church, and the girls were married. off to suitable husbands. His eldest son Walford, my own great-grandfather, was also quite a remarkable man, becoming Hon. Canon of Worcester, Chief Inspector of Schools for the county, a J.P. and the founder of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, a revolution-
ary institution in its day. His achievements were matched by Henry's only unmarried daughter, Nona, who was a saintly person who carried on her father's welfare work in the parish at a time of horrifying economic distress. She was instrumental in organising an assisted-emigration scheme which settled over a hundred unemployed townsfolk in Australia: owing to her generosity and practical grasp of details, almost all of 'her' settlers achieved dignity and prosperity shortly after arrival. The Living of Bedworth continued for eleven years in the hands of a playboy appointee who continued to enjoy himself abroad and never came near his Parish while his curate, Henry, was battling in his place. Why was this outstanding practical Christian never honoured, nor even promoted to Bishop, where his great talents could have been utilised to even greater advantage? Today, many of England's cities have deteriorated into gangsterfiefs, with streets where even police squads hesitate to enter. No one seems to know the remedy for this shameful situation. Would that we could conjure up fifty men today with Henry's qualities: the problem would be solved in a decade. Alas, the blue-print seems to have been lost! I visited Bedworth myself for the first time at the age of 76, and was given the warmest of welcomes. My great ancestor's memory is still green and a local school is named after him. In the 'sixties when I commanded my own Brigantine yacht, we sailed past Cape Trafalgar 17 times. I never failed to don my cap and salute the Cape in memory of my great forebear, while our 'crew' laid aft to dip the Blue Ensign. Who would not be truly proud to follow such a man?
