All in Faith The All In Faith Team was formed to Honor, Loretta Bisson, who at the age of 64 died suddenly from heart failure and was able to continue her legacy of love by being an Organ Donor. Loretta was simply a single mom on her own, holding one of the most demanding schedules anyone can imagine. The most loving person and least self-serving person I have had the pleasure of sharing my life with, and best of all I will always be able to call her Mom. My Mom has always been and will continue to be one of those special people, one of those people that so many other people count on. Folks like her are simply hard to come by these days. Becoming a Donor Family has been like receiving an extra special inheritance from my Mom. It has not only given our family vast opportunities to not only Honor my Mom but has also given me the opportunity to find a passion within myself that will enrich others’ lives. I have had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people of various ages and situations that have had their lives changed for the better due to organ donation and many others, who like me, who have become a Donor Family through great loss.

Organ Donation became important to me after a dear friend was diagnosed with a kidney disease that has no cure or treatment, the only hope resided in one day receiving a kidney transplant. Silvia is the kind of friend that when you have fallen and are sitting in the biggest mud puddle ever, she steps right in there with you and yanks you out. She is the kind of friend I have always aspired to be like and I could not imagine my life ever being the same without her being a part of it. That is why I decided to become a Living Donor. For her to accept what I gave her has been difficult, and even as I write this, it is still difficult for her, but it was time for her to experience what she has so often given.

Alpha Omega Come on out and run or walk with team Alpha Omega as we raise awareness for Organ and Tissue Donation. This is my 19th year volunteering with the NJ Sharing Network and my 8th year supporting the 5K. The Long Branch 5k is a VIRTUAL 5K this year and will definitely be different but we will still be running through the neighborhood. Hopefully some friends will join us on a virtual run!!

The 5k in New Providence has been moved to September but is always amazing because you are at the NJ Sharing Network Headquarters. The streets of beautiful New Providence are closed off. As you run, homeowners / spectators cheer you on to the finish line. Almost every team sets up a tent here to showcase what their team is about. I will bring the tent and tables, please bring a folding chair.

Team Andrew Team Andrew was created in the memory of Andrew Jova. Our son, Andrew ,was born July 3, 1991. His heaven date is August 23,2008. He was 17 years old.

Andrew was about to start his senior year in high school. He was an active member in our church's youth group and was involved in local mission work. Andrew loved to play golf, lacrosse and football. He loved the Yankees and the Green Bay Packers. Andrew was also a member if the Jr. Firefighters program in Brick, NJ. He was a fun boy full of energy. He had his drivers permit and was looking forward to driving in October 2008. Andrew died from a brain injury he sustained in an accident.

We made the decision to donate his organs after spending a few days in the hospital waiting for things to get better. The waiting was horrible and after we were told Andrew would not survive, we thought of the many people waiting for that phone call that would save their lives. It is a way of remembering Andrew and we know if the choice was his to make, he would have chosen the same.

Losing Andrew is a daily struggle for us but we have faith that Andrew is home with Jesus and donating his organs has made it possible for others to live.

Team Andrew proudly brings awareness to organ donation and honors the memory of our sweet, crazy, Andrew.

Angels Among Us In December 2016, after a lung biopsy, I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), a lung disease that results in scarring of the lungs for unknown reasons and placed on oxygen therapy. After completing a series of tests, I was listed for a right lung transplant in September 2017.

While waiting for a lung to become available, I began taking Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Monmouth Medical Center and attended several support groups to help me understand what I was about to go through, which I highly recommend. In addition I stayed active doing the things that I enjoyed doing in my daily and social life.

Over a period of time my oxygen level started to decline and was admitted to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in May 2019 and placed on the High Flow oxygen machine a month later transferred to the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation machine (ECMO) to help me breathe. Within a few days my Doctor and a Fellow staff member came to my room and informed me that a lung had become available. On June 24, 2019, I received a right lung transplant.

Throughout the time that I was waiting I never gave up hope and stayed positive. I had my Faith, Family, My Son Darren and his wife Josefina, Friends, Neighbors,Transplant Team and my Music and to ALL, I say “Thank You” from the bottom of my heart.

Extra Special “Thank You” to my Donor and her Family for giving me this Gift of Life and hope to one day meet them and thank them in person.

This year I will be participating in my first 5K/ Transplant Games for the NJ Sharing Network. I’ve recently become a Certified Advocate Volunteer and look forward to sharing my journey with others to give them hope and to stay positive.

My daughter Dana was taken from my life too soon. She's definitely an Angel in heaven looking down and is a guiding force in my life. Also, I was recently blessed with my first grandchild, Waimea Dana Burke. We always have Angels Among Us whether they are deceased or living. These two angels give me a strong sense of purpose and a sincere desire to contribute to society in a meaningful way.

ARTIE’S PARTIE

Arthur lost his life in a fatal car accident in March of 2012. Even though his life was over, Arthur was able to give the gift of life to three others. Arthur gave the greatest gift someone could give to another.

Since then, every year his family and friends walk in honor of him and his gifts. Arthur was an outgoing and wonderful person who really cared about people and would do anything to help them. We walk to keep his memory alive and show our love and support to those who have given, those who have received, and those who are waiting for the gift of life.

A-Team

Everything happens for a reason. We may never learn the answer to the question “Why?” but we have to accept there is a reason. This is my story.

One of the many things I enjoyed doing with Angela was walking. At least four times a week Angela and I would walk our two mile route. This was our time to talk privately with each other. Speed records were never set but we didn’t care. On one particular stroll this past summer she brought up the topic of being laid to rest. I have always wanted to be cremated and Angela shared her desires with me.

She also wanted to be cremated. When I asked her why she replied, “So I can always be with you.” We made a joke about it because she was 28 and still living home. Looking back, this conversation proved to be essential in honoring her wishes at such a young age. Why did we have this conversation? God only knows.

As a little girl, Angela was the child that everyone loved. She had lots of friends and would do anything to make them happy. Angela loved to cheer and play softball. She wasn’t overly athletic but always put her heart into everything she did. As a teenager, she was the person her friends confided in.

She could keep a secret and gave advice from her heart. Why? Because she truly cared about the people in her life.

Angela earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Centenary College. Not completely fulfilled, she furthered her education by studying to become a drug and alcohol counselor. Working on a non-paying internship, Angela would put in ridiculous hours. This came as no surprise to my husband and myself. Once again, Angela showed her love of caring for others.

Even in death, she continued to help those in despair. Becoming an organ donor was her decision and one we proudly followed through with. Although deeply saddened by our loss, we were happy for the many people her final act of generosity supported. All of her major organs were instantly procured and offered life and hope to someone less fortunate.

Angela was our first child. She is sadly missed by us, her brother and sister, her Godson, numerous relatives and countless friends. We may never know the answer to the question “Why?” but we do know everything happens for a reason. Perhaps her reason was to continue to live on through others. It is our hope to someday hear from those who benefited from her.

On December 8, 2017, Barry Wilson, a loving husband, father, papa, brother and friend was called to Heaven. While our family gathered together the night of his passing, we received a call from the Sharing Network informing us that Barry registered as an organ donor. In the midst of this very sad time, there was this overwhelming feeling of pride and happiness knowing that Barry would still be making a difference in someone else’s life.

Barry was a confident, strong, yet sensitive man. He was also a man of his word, a man who held himself and others to the highest standards, a creator of beautiful things with attention to the finest detail, a man who never stopped learning, an adventurer, a true friend, a soulmate, a protector, and the glue that held us together. He was the builder of all the dreams our family had, and continue to have. It is with his leadership and act of selflessness that many of his friends and family members now have also registered as organ donors.

We have been blessed to have received several letters from recipients. Each time we do, we are touched by the kindness of their words and it helps us to heal a bit more. The cards, his donor certificate, our green NJ Sharing Network bracelets, are all displayed for us to be reminded of this beautiful gift Barry has given to others. We are glad to be gathered for the NJ Sharing Network 5K to walk in honor of Barry and celebrate the life of an amazing man who truly gave everyone his all each and every day!

Team Big Daddy Marcus It’s that time again!!

I am participating in NJ Sharing Network's 5K Celebration of Life to honor my late husband, Marcus. Marcus gained his wings December 2018. However, Marcus loved to help whoever he could whenever he could. My beloved husband was able to save lives by donating his heart, kidney and liver. My dream one day is to have the chance to meet these individuals that now carry a piece of my husband.

The 5K Celebration of Life is more than just a 5K‌ it celebrates the many lives that have been touched by organ and tissue donation and translation and honors those who have given the gift of life. I invite you to join me on Sunday, May 17th, 2020 at 10am in Long Branch to honor, to remember, and to give hope.

After being on the transplant list for 14 months Bill received a single lung transplant on August 9, 2015. He was sick for over 10 years with emphysema and COPD and in the 14 months of being listed he was hospitalized several times. We had 4 dry runs before receiving “the call�.

We have written several letters to our donor family and hope to one day be able to meet them and learn more about our donor Angel that has given life back to our family.

We have become volunteers with The Sharing Network to bring the importance of organ and tissue donation to every person that we come into contact with.

This is our first year participating in the 5k and we can’t wait for many more to come!

Billy Romanello's Team Our team is named Billy Romanello, in remembrance of a very special son, brother, nephew and friend, who would have turned 43 this year.

Billy was always smiling, the first person that new neighbors were bound to meet, and the life of the party. Billy was the one who volunteered to be dunked to earn money for local charities, who loved shopping at the mall, and who would give his last penny to the needy.

His death was sudden, and we miss him every day. This hurt is eased by knowing that even during his last moments, Billy was busy caring for others, by donating his organs so that others could live.

Team Bob Born in the coal region of Pennsylvania in Robert (Bob) McCullion spent his childhood years in Centralia, PA. In 1961, the McCullion family New Jersey. Following high school graduation, Bob served his country in the United States Army as a Chaplains’ Assistant during the Vietnam War. Upon completion of his military duties, Bob enrolled at Seton Hall University as a Sociology major graduating in 1972. While at Seton Hall, he met his future wife. At the time of his death, Bob and Eileen were married for 43 years.

Bob and Eileen moved to Toms River in 1974 where they raised three wonderful children: Katie, Mike and Tim. Bob drew great pleasure watching his children on the soccer fields and basketball courts. He was also a devoted Seton Hall Basketball and Giants Football fan. Bob worked for over 30 years for various technology companies, achieving numerous awards for his successful sales career. He took great pride in providing his customers with excellent products and service.

Bob considered his immediate and extended family as his greatest blessings. His beautiful Irish smile lit up every gathering he attended. People recognized Bob as a loving, caring and compassionate person who generously extended help to those in need. Bob registered as an organ donor years before his death in 2014 from heart disease. His family has derived great comfort knowing that his tissue and cornea donations have enhanced the lives of over 65 deserving individuals.

Bob would be incredibly grateful to his 5K team members consisting of his loving family and dear friends. He would also be most appreciative of the life saving work of the New Jersey Sharing Network.

BOB’S BRIGADE

We are a proud family of an organ and tissue donor, our beloved Robert "Bob" Ehrentraut. He was a loving husband, caring father, loyal friend and is missed dearly. His legacy lives on in our hearts and a part him lives on in those he was able to help through his donations.

We will be walking again together

for the fourth year since his passing in 2014. Please join us and/or consider donating to this very special organization that is near and dear to us. Being a part of these walks and meeting friends who have been through similar experiences has truly helped us to remember to "Celebrate Life" and how special "giving back" truly is.

TEAM BUCK TEAM BUCK, a team formed in 2011 for the very first NJSN 5K, really exemplifies and illustrates the far reaching powers of organ and tissue donation. Now more than ever, we need to be reminded that the strength and the hope within the human spirit will prevail.

Our family was not unaware of the miracle of organ donation. Back in 1995, my brother John’s father-in-law, the beloved John Luciano, received a heart transplant. At the time, it was almost unbelievable yet so amazing. He went on to live for nearly another 20 years and got to enjoy, and be adored by, his ever-growing family. But that was all I ever remember about the subject of organ donation. We all supported it, checked the boxes on our driver’s licenses, that was it.

Then in 2009, our son Dan, happened to share with us that he’d renewed his drivers license and he had to show us how handsome he looked in the picture, and he told us that he was an organ donor….that one day, someone was going to get his beautiful green eyes.

Of course we never dreamed that he would donate his organs within days of showing us that license, but he did go on to save three lives and assist dozens of others with his donated tissue.

So TEAM BUCK was formed in 2011 to remember and honor Danny and to help spread awareness about organ and tissue donation. This has always been a wonderful event for our family. In the early years, it was Dan’s friends along with aunts and uncles and cousins. Our friends and neighbors and co-workers often came….some who had known and loved Danny, and some who just felt like they did because of knowing and loving us.

Along the way, as Amy volunteered at NJSN, she met Dr. Patrick Buddle. Patrick is a LIVING DONOR, having donated his kidney to a friend and colleague in 2002. Sometimes they would speak together giving their audiences different perspectives about organ donation.

In 2013, immediately following the 5K event, Amy and some friends continued celebrating at The Parker House in Sea Girt. After noticing that the bartender and Amy were both wearing a bright green rubber bracelet, they got to talking about their respective associations to organ donation….Amy, because of Dan and the bartender, Vincent Buddle, because of his Dad, Patrick! Well, that chance meeting really turned into something special, with Amy and Vinnie recently getting married. So, now Patrick is Amy’s father-in-law.

Over the years TEAM BUCK has been supported both emotionally and financially by our wonderful family and friends.

A special mention needs to be made to my Blue Buff “family” who often came from Connecticut to show their support.

Sadly, in 2017, a very special member of the Buff family died tragically. She was my friend, Joyce Novotny, beloved sister and aunt to Jim and Stephanie and their son, Eddie. Joyce also became a hero, saving the lives of eight people. Being an organ donor was very much in keeping with her generous and giving spirit.

Our one VERY SPECIAL TEAM, has many reasons to celebrate the gift of organ donation.

For this 10th ANNIVERSARY year, sadly we will not physically be together, but the 2020 Long Branch Virtual 5k is wonderfully represented by members of TEAM BUCK from near and far.

So many of you have generously supported The NJ Sharing Network, and for that we thank you. We have photo submissions from near and far! We appreciate you sending in photos!! Our virtual team is taking part from as far as California. A VERY special shout out to Bruce’s fellow classmates, the Thirty-third/17th Company, Class of 1975, US Naval Academy! It’s been wonderful to reconnect with some of you and I hope that you can consider taking part next year.

TEAM BUCK will not be beaten by Covid-19. Of course we will be smart and keep it virtual this year. We will miss seeing you this month but we’ll be sure to let you know if the NJSN is able to move forward with the Sept 13 event in New Providence.

Caitlin Gives Team Caitlin Gives was created in loving memory of Caitlin Mary Nelson. Caitlin was a selfless, warm-hearted young woman who was 20 years old when she tragically passed away. She had a brilliant smile, dazzling charm, and warm personality. Her passion for life and devotion to helping others was remarkable. Caitlin was always eager to assist people and sometimes even put the needs of others above her own. She enjoyed knitting hats for premature babies in the hospital. Caitlin was a volunteer at Sister Pat’s Kids Camp for children with cancer and other blood related disorders and she volunteered at Camp Sea Stars North, a sleepaway camp for children affected by the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School. She was studying social work and hoped to become a pediatric oncology social worker.

Caitlin was a fervent supporter of organ donation and strongly encouraged her family and friends to register to become organ donors. At one time prior to the accident, she even told her mother to donate her organs if anything ever happened to her so that someone could use them. Her selflessness and thoughtfulness is admirable, especially at such a young age.

In her ultimate act of kindness, Caitlin chose to give the gift of life. She selflessly donated her heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, and liver. The magnitude of the impact Caitlin made is clear-she also donated over 200 bone and tissue grafts for oral and orthopedic surgeries. One of these has already been used for a young man’s knee surgery. We wish that Caitlin could be here but we are grateful that she lives on. In September of 2018, Caitlin’s family had the opportunity to meet the recipients of Caitlin’s organs. The recipient of Caitlin’s kidney even named his new daughter Caitlin, in honor of the girl who gave him the gift of life. Many donor families never get a chance to meet the recipients for a number of reasons, so they were fortunate to do so just a year and a half later. It was a difficult yet beautiful experience. The tragedy they faced afforded these amazing individuals another chance to live.

Our angel baby accomplished so much and touched so many lives in her 20 years. As a daughter, sister, girlfriend, cousin, friend, and niece, Caitlin will be missed terribly but will live on in our minds and hearts.

This is our 4th year participating in the NJ Sharing Network 5K Celebration of Life. We continue to walk and run to honor Caitlin and keep her legacy alive.

Carm's Crusaders Carm’s Crusaders is excited to celebrate the Silver Anniversary of Mom/ Carmella’s liver transplant! She wouldn’t be where she is without the amazing Sharing Network family! We’re walking to honor those who gave, pay tribute to others who received, offer hope to those who continue to wait and remember the lives lost while waiting for the Gift of Life.

Team Charlie's Angels Losing our Charlie unexpectedly on March 3, 2018 shortly after retiring from a rewarding 42-year career with Con Ed on Staten Island has left a void in our lives. He was much more than a supervisor. He was a unique mentor and a true friend who went above and beyond to ensure each of us excelled at our current positions while challenging us to achieve our fullest potential.

To celebrate Charlie’s life on what would have been his 66th birthday, we will again be participating in NJ Sharing Network’s 5K Celebration of Life on Sunday, May 17, 2020, albeit a VIRTUAL one. This non-profit organization is responsible for recovering organ and tissue for transplant 24/7 for the nearly 4,000 people in NJ who are on the waiting list!

As a donor, Charlie’s tissue donations have already improved the quality of life for his recipients.

Chilton ICU Coderunners Our team was first formed about 5 years ago but our story starts long before then. The ICU at Chilton Medical Center (formerly Chilton Memorial Hospital) has had a long standing relationship with the New Jersey Sharing Network (NJSN). From the time I began my employment almost 20 years ago it was clear to me that supporting this initiative was held in a high priority. From the ICU perspective the support is bitter sweet.

As you care for a patient who has advanced to brain death there are many emotions from both the family and staff that evolve from admission to the time a brain death determination is met. I have been priviliged to be able to see just how helpful the partnership with the NJSN staff is in these situations. They get to know the family as much as the bedside staff and are right there to provide the support needed to help families make what has to be the hardest decision of their lives. Whether families decide to proceed with organ donation or not, the NJSN staff has provided the same level or support and understanding, that has been truely inspiring to me. I was only 18, working as an Operating Room Technician at another hospital, when I participated in my first Organ Procurement procedure. I remember as if it was yesterday the feeling of awe just knowing that the patient's heart and kidneys would save several lives. Being on the inpatient side now rather than the operative side has given me an even broader perspective of just what the family goes through in making this very brave decision to give the gift of life. Over the course of my career I have cared for many patients who have met criteria for organ donation, some who's families have agreed to donation and some who have not. When a family does agree it is incredible working together with the NJSN on-site nurse to determine viability of the organs and seeing their process to find the proper match or matches for the donors organs and setting up the procurement teams, all the while providing support to the family. It is for these reasons and many more that I have been so passionate about supporting the New Jersey Sharing Network during my career as a Registered Nurse and am proud to work for leadership who share and support my passion.

CINDY’S AMAZING GRACE Cindy passed away in February 2016 of a brain aneurysm. She was 55 years young, married for 35 years and a mother of two. Besides her family she had three serious passions. Cindy was an avid skier, a beach lover and atop it all a baker - a true connoisseur. Cindy would spend months baking Christmas cookies for family and friends. Over 30 different types! Along with her

daughter’s help, they would decorate and ship them all over the world! From the mountains of California to our military bases in Europe - her cookies have been there.

Cindy was the most generous women, always offering her hand to those who needed it. From donating herself and organizing donations for those who needed them to rescuing dogs, Cindy made many efforts to help those she could. The day she left us she gave the ultimate gift, of four life saving donations and multiple life saving ones!

We kindly ask that you join our team and walk/run with us in Long Branch on May 20th or make a contribution to the New Jersey Sharing Network to help honor those who gave, those who received, those who wait and those who have lost their lives while waiting for their gift.

David’s Flock was created in memory of David Bird, a 2004 liver transplant recipient and avid supporter of organ and tissue donation. David championed the cause in New Jersey and New York by competing in the NJ Sharing Network 5K, cycling in the NYC Triathlon and running the 2013 NYC Marathon to raise funds and awareness for organ and tissue donation. A member of Team Liberty, David was thrilled to compete in the 2008 and 2010 Transplant Games. David always had his donor and her family in his heart and mind, especially when he competed. Our team honors David for his zest in life, his donor who gave him renewed life, and all donors who give the gift of life.

DaVita Stars

TEAM DOROTHEA TEAM DOROTHEA participates in the NJ Sharing Network 5K Walk/Run in support of Dorothea (Dede) Duffy. Initially, as she waited in hope of a kidney transplant and, now, in gratitude for the kidney transplant she received in January 2014.

Dorothea has walked in every NJSN 5K through dialysis to transplant and now walks to honor her Donor, Ben Diamond and Ben's Family.

This is her story.

"I had some medical challenges that began in 2010. I was diagnosed with an uncommon autoimmune disease which affected my kidneys. I was on dialysis and the wait list for a kidney transplant for almost 4 years.

Then, in January 2014, I was blessed with the long awaited kidney transplant.

I am eternally grateful to my Donor Family for making the decision to give the Gift of Life through their loved one, Ben. As a NJ Sharing Network Volunteer Ambassador, I am glad to have the opportunity to share my experience and information about Organ and Tissue donation.

Eileen's Transplant Trotters I would like to tell you about myself and Eileen’s Transplant Trotters.

I suffered from PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). I was on dialysis for 5 1/2 years. Going for treatments was not a pleasant environment or lifestyle, but I had to make it part of my routine, and made the best of it. I made many friends with the caring staff, as well as fellow patients. I was listed at 2 transplant facilities and received my call for my Gift of Life on 12/15/13, which happened to be the day before my birthday and the week before Christmas. I could not have asked for a better gift, ever, in my life. Pre and post transplant times were very difficult, but promising. I had (and have) a very strong group behind me~my husband and my 3 beautiful children, family, as well as many close friends. I thank my donor and their family every single day, for giving me the ultimate Gift of Life, at the most tragic time in their lives.

As I recovered, I thought of many ways I could get involved with spreading the word of the importance of organ and tissue donation, as a token of my appreciation and to give back. Since I received my transplant in Pennsylvania, it would have been difficult to travel back there often for volunteer training and meetings, events, etc. I began to get involved with the NJ Sharing Network, and became a certified volunteer almost 2 years ago. I am very happy to be part of such a wonderful group of Volunteers, Staff and others. It is a tremendously rewarding experience to be part of that team, and to give back when sharing my story. It is a warm feeling for donors, donor families, recipients and recipient families to see how well a recipient can be doing.

I have greatly enjoyed participating in the NJSN 5K Celebration of Life for 3 times now. I walk in honor of my donor, who, without their Gift, I would not be here to participate with my family and close friends.

The event is just a wonderful way for those associated with transplants, to come together and support each other. The day is filled with so many heartwarming stories, different activities and more.

I live by the quote, “One Day at a Time.” When my Dad was suffering with kidney disease, he would always say that and it would get him through some rough and good days. I live by his quote every day, to honor my donor and to be here to enjoy life One Day at a Time.

Team Elise PAPD 3382 Elise Catherine Bastardo left us on 2/12/16. She was in an automobile accident at the age of 24.

Elise was a graduate of Rutgers University and a volunteer for the Scarlet Listeners. This is an undergraduate student run peer counseling, crisis, and referral hotline. After many hours of training, Elise answered these calls. It changed her life and guided her towards a life of public service. Elise became a proud member of the Port Authority Police Department. She was assigned to Newark Airport and loved life and her job.

Elise believed in fitness and probably joined more gyms than most. Elise was very strong both emotionally and physically. However, she didn't take family, friends or life for granted. She valued the idea of "today" and living in the moment. To say Elise "lit up a room with her smile" was an understatement. We were so blessed to have her for 24 years. Our lives and family are better because of her.

Elise's grandfather was the first heart transplant in Union County or NJ. (I am not sure of that check People Mag.) He was featured in People Magazine in 1978. This transplant allowed me to meet my husband's father. We never forgot how important the gift of life is. As a family we knew that we would donate Elise's organs, but she already had made that decision by filling out her license. She was an organ donor. Elise had a great understanding of life at a young age.

Her organ donation would allow three more people to continue with living their lives~their destiny.

Please honor Elise by becoming an organ donor and participating in the virtual 5K on 5/17/20.

TEAM ERIC

We are here for the third year to honor the memory of our angel, Eric Caposele. He was a wonderful son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin and friend. His smile is something that will live on forever in the memories of all who knew him. We are proud of the decision he made to become an organ donor and are grateful to our transplant coordinator, and the NJ Sharing Network who helped us through this difficult journey. We are forever grateful for their compassion, love and support. Our lives are forever changed because of our loss and again because of his gifts.

The Extra-organaries As many of you may know, Mike's father was the grateful recipient of a heart transplant in 2010.

Within a few weeks he was full of energy and back to all his normal activities. Since then he has considered every day to be a gift. We are so grateful, too, for the generous but anonymous donor who gave us all these years with Mike Senior.

On May 17th our family will be participating in a virtual 5K Run/Walk to honor all of those who gave the gift of life, to celebrate those who have received, and to offer hope to those still waiting. Funds raised by the NJ Sharing Network go to support donor families, innovative transplant research, and raise public awareness.

TEAM FES Our very first 5K was in 2011, the inaugural 5K at the New Jersey Sharing Network. This picture is a collage of our first experience at the 5K. Team Fes is in memory of our son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend James J. Fessel.

Participating in the 5K was a way to take an extremely heartbreaking event, and changing it into a celebration of hope. On the afternoon that he was taken from us, someone at the hospital asked if we would consider tissue donation. In our extreme grief and confusion, we declined.

However, late that night, someone from the NJ Sharing Network called and asked again. She added that the donor ID was on his license. This was his choice. So the 5K became a celebration of his life, but also a reminder of his generous and gentle spirit.

With every year, we learn more about this wonderful organization. We know that the funds raised at the 5K support the mission of the Sharing Network through awareness and education.

So we not only celebrate his life, but continue his generous spirit, knowing that more people are receiving the gift of life through the support of the Sharing Network.

It has been such a blessing to be a part of the NJ Sharing Network. We are so very grateful for having the opportunity to celebrate James’ life through our grief.

In honor of those who gave, on behalf of those who have received and with hope for those who continue to wait for a life saving organ and tissue transplant.

Guardian Angel Grandpa Allen In October of 2017 my father, Allen Ramsey Peddie, was taken from me. His death was sudden and devastating for myself and everyone who knew him. He had a kind heart, an amazing work ethic, a silly sense of humor, and a love for soda and chocolate cake. The thing he was best at was being my father. He was my superhero, to say the least. In 2019 I gave birth to my first child.

A boy I named Weston Allen. My son will never meet my father, but I will make sure he knows what an incredible Grandpa he has looking over him. I will make sure that my son knows that not only does his grandpa's soul continue to live on, but that he lives through multiple transplant recipients because of NJ Sharing Network’s amazing efforts. I will make sure that he knows that my father was a superhero—that even though he has passed, he still continues to save lives.

NJ Sharing Network has given me a gift that is hard for me to describe in words. Maybe one day I'll find the right words, but for now I'd just like to say: Thank you, NJ Sharing Network, for eternally honoring my father's life and for letting me be a part of this amazing community.

Rich was a donor and we were all pretty excited when we learned that at least one person benefited from his "gift".

TEAM HAILEY The story of how “Team Hailey” came to be.

Hailey was an energetic and good-hearted teenager. She was best known for her contagious smile and laughter. Hailey had a tremendous number of friends who love her and miss her dearly, as well as her family. At the young age of fifteen, Hailey had a dream, not one any ordinary teenage girl would have, she wanted to save lives. Hailey was actively involved in the Junior ROTC Program at her high school. After receiving her high school diploma, Hailey wanted to enlist in the Air Force, soon to graduate after fulfilling her duties, to continue her education and become a surgeon.

Unfortunately, Hailey’s life was cut short due to a tragic car accident.

After her passing, the Palumbo Family was approached by The NJ Sharing Network. Thinking of what Hailey wanted to accomplish, we decided to carry out her dream and donated her organs. Through this generous donation, Hailey saved five lives and gave many others a better quality of life through tissue and bone donation. Hailey’s dream had come true. Two of Hailey’s organ recipients have already contacted us, by letter, through the Sharing Network. At the NJ Sharing Network’s 5K Celebration of Life in 2019, Team Hailey was given the honor to meet Hannah, Hailey’s liver recipient.

Meeting Hannah and her family was the most amazing opportunity. Our lives were changed, but in the most heartwarming way. Team Hailey absolutely adore and love Hannah and her family as if we have known them our whole lives! As well as being able to meet Hannah in person, we have been communicating with John, one of Hailey’s kidney recipients, via letters. It is the most wonderful feeling knowing that her organs gave someone a better quality of life. The Palumbo Family had decided to participate in the 5K Celebration’s, not only because of organ donation, but to honor our precious daughter, sister, and friend. Hailey continues to live in spirit, thru her friends and family.

Team Hillsborough High School Donate Life Club HHS Donate Life Club was started in March 2017 by Zachary Roth to honor his brother, Matthew. Matthew was killed by street racing drunk drivers on July 19, 2015. Matthew was living in Arlington, VA and was a CPA with PwC. Matthew’s wishes were to be an organ donor. He saved 5 lives through organ donation (heart, liver, pancreas, both kidneys and one lung). He also donated his corneas to provide the gift of sight.

Matthew loved sports and was an avid Rangers, Jets and Mets fan, along with his alma mater, The University of Maryland Terps. Matthew loved spending time with family and friends. He stayed in touch with his high school, college and study abroad friends after graduation and made a point of organizing get togethers with them.

Matthew graduated from the University of Maryland, Smith School of Business in 2013 with a double major in Accounting and Finance and passed his CPA exam the first time he took it. Matthew loved to travel and made a point of taking time to go on a family vacation every year. He studied abroad in Italy and visited many other countries during that time. Matthew loved music, traveling to many music festivals.

Matthew will always be remembered for his big smile, infectious laugh and kind heart. He would go out of his way to help people and never judged anyone.

Matthew’s motto was work hard but play hard too and that’s how he lived life.

Team HHS Donate Life raises funds for NJ Sharing Network so they can continue their lifesaving programs and walks to honor Matthew Roth, Jared Colon and Joseph Hernandez who were all HHS students and organ/tissue donors.

TEAM HOPE

Three months into our pregnancy we learned our baby girl had serious problems.

Clinging to The Lord for strength and wisdom, we named her Hope and prayed for healing. As the pregnancy progressed we learned she had a skeletal dysplasia that made life outside of the womb very difficult. Hope was born on February 6, 2014 and lived for a beautiful 90 minutes. She was able to donate liver cells to help bring life and hope to other hurting families. We miss our baby girl terribly but know her short life had great purpose. Thank you NJ Sharing Network for honoring Hope's life and preserving her legacy.

In it for the Lung Haul HI ALL! This is our first year participating in NJ Sharing Network 5k!! We are all excited to be part of such a beautiful event!

We are walking for my dad who on October 4, 2018 was the recipient of a double lung transplant.

We are also remembering, honoring, and showing much gratitude and love to all the donors and donor families as well as all recipients.

Sharing is caring and it’s the most selfless act someone can do for another human being and because of this we thank God each and every day that my dad is still here with us!

We can not wait to participate in this years virtual 5k !

Go Team “In it for the Lung Haul”

Members of the Infineum community joined in the 6th Annual NJ Sharing Network 5K earlier this month. Organized by Steve Sutkowski, in honor of his wife who is a liver transplant recipient, team Infineum had 53 participants and raised $3,030 to date. Proceeds help fund clinical research, public education, scholarships, and outreach programs just to name a few.

We congratulate Greg Kaasmann who took 2nd place for the male group ages 25-29, and we thank everyone who participated in the yearly celebration of life.

Team Iris My dad was very sick for several years and it progressively got worse to the point where activities such as walking became difficult. On our way home from my grandmother's funeral we pulled over because my dad was having a heart attack. We called 911 on that day in May and he was transferred to Newark Beth Israel where the amazing team of nurses and doctors took care of him for months on machines that kept him alive while he waited for a new heart.

We started Team Iris to commemorate the generous young woman who donated her heart and saved my dad's life. Our family is forever grateful this beautiful soul that has granted my dad with more years together and the ability to participate in this 5K.

Jane's Cardinals Jane's Cardinals was formed in honor of our beloved Wife, Mother, Sister and Friend Jane Conrad who passed suddenly and became a donor on January 15th, 2017.

Jane spent her whole life taking care of and helping everyone so it is extremely fitting that she could continue doing so after she passed. Jane was the backbone of our family and enjoyed cooking, gardening and spending time with friends and family. She spent her daughter's younger years as “room mom” and chaperoning class trips. She cheered loudly on the sidelines at the girl’s sporting events, whipped up “your special birthday dinner” and had an answer to every “how do you…” question asked.

NJ Sharing Network has been the #1 thing that has gotten us thorough this difficult time. This is our 4th year walking as Team- Jane's Cardinals and though we can't all be together this year, many of us will be running virtually.

Jayla's Journey Team Jayla’s Journey was initially created for my daughter Jayla who was born with a chronic kidney condition and will one day need a transplant. It was also a way for me to continue my love for running and begin to run for a purpose, so in 2018 we created our team and never looked back.

We have since increased our running as well as our involvement with the NJ Sharing Network, spreading awareness for organ and tissue donation. This will be our third year participating in The 5K Celebration of life and we look forward to many more along our journey to help and support people now that are in the position that my daughter will one day be in.

LISA A. HULBERT

Our team name is in memory of one of Lisa’s favorite nicknames (Jellybean) and 1 of her favorite hobbies (coloring with all the colors of the RAINBOW with her niece and nephews.)

My little sister, Lisa, passed away on January 15, 2012 while waiting for her third liver transplant.

Fortunately, in 1996 and again in 2002, she received liver transplants because of someone’s gift of life. Her only chance of survival was through these transplants. These 2 transplants gave her the gift of life for 17 more beautiful years. Without organ donation Lisa would not have ever even th seen her 14 birthday. Fortunately she was able to live to the age of 30. She was a strong, determined young woman who fought her battle to the very end.

Despite the hardship of enduring 2 liver transplants in 6 years, she always had a positive outlook and attitude. There are not many people who need 3 liver transplants in a lifetime. It is even more unusual to require 3 transplants by the age of 30. With every reason in the world to complain, Lisa refused to. Through all of her pain, she never complained, but simply accepted and embraced it as yet another challenge to overcome. She was a fighter for her entire life. Lisa never felt dory for herself; she spent her days living life to the fullest and breathing life, love and positivity into the lives of everyone she touched.

We are sad for all that Lisa struggled with, but we are also so proud of her for her strength and bravery, as she fought her illness to the very end. Lisa would want us to remember her for the passion, love, and feistiness she exhibited on a daily basis. Although we many all struggle with the question of why God would take Lisa from us at such a young age, we must be at peace in knowing that her spirit lives on and honor her life by emulating the strength and courage that she showed us every day. We must look at her death as the beginning of a legacy of hope and courage. She would want each of us to become the most positive person we know, discover that we are stronger than we think we are, and face adversity with the same courage and tenacity that Lisa showed us throughout her life. As she looks down on us today during this 5K, we should look back up at her and let her know how much she has impacted our lives, and the lives of others without even knowing it, Thank you for joining me and my family in celebrating the life of my sister, Lisa, our guardian angel.

Team Jerry In memory of my beloved son Jerry, I am walking with some of my friends to support NJ Sharing Network 5K event. To honor, To Remember and To Give Hope. Jerry’s life was cut short in a tragic accident. It was one day short of his 25th birthday in April 2012. Jerry is always a giver. He is a gentle and loving soul.

Although Jerry’s time with us is short He did accomplish great things. Not many people in their lifetime have the opportunity to save another person’s life. Jerry did better than that, he has saved several lives. THE GIFT OF LIFE Jerry gave to people is precious and priceless. Although the pain of losing my only son will never go away I believe helping others will also help me to cope with my grief.

Jerry will be forever loved and missed.

ed. I am proud to say that I know one of those recipients. After almost a year on dialysis for the second time, my dad received a life saving kidney. He is doing well and getting better and better each day. One organ an tissue donor can save up to 8 lives and restore health to over 75 others. As both a dialysis nurse and the daughter to an organ recipient, I support the efforts the NJ Sharing Network has made for my dad and countless others. Please educate yourselves on the benefits of becoming organ donors and consider participating in the NJ Sharing Network 5k that celebrates life.

Team Jessica 5k season is almost here again and we would love for everyone to join us for a 3rd year at the 5k Celebration of Life in Long Branch, continuing our tradition in honor of Jessica’s loving and everlasting spirit. We are incredibly thankful for the love and support we have received and continue to receive from our family, friends, and the incredible Sharing Network community.

And, we can only speak for ourselves in saying this organization beyond doubt supports an incredible cause and its influence has a ripple effect.

While it is hard to imagine that it will soon be three years since we had to say our goodbye’s to Jessica, the support we received since her passing has helped us through some of the most difficult of times. And, truly is what makes a foundation so close to our hearts possible.

John's Super Striders My brother John was a very caring guy with a huge heart. In June of 2017 we participated in a Relay for Life as I had cancer. At the event my brother befriended a little girl named Meghan who was fighting her own battle. He was blown away by her strength and spirit. At the end of the night, he told we spoke of Meghan and he said to me, “ I would give my life if she could have hers.” That was the kind of person he was. Unfortunately, hours later we received a call that he was in the hospital and had suffered an aneurysm. John’s last gift was that he chose to be an Organ Donor. His heart, kidneys and liver were donated. He had an amazing nurse who not only took exceptional care of him but also travelled with his heart and was able to meet the recipient and extend all our best wishes. The NJ Sharing Network has also been extraordinary during the entire journey. We run annually to honor not only John’s memory and spirit but also for all the recipients and their second chance at life.

Johnny Did Goode March 2020 will mark one year since heaven gained a true hero. Being the generous and selfless man he was, John was able to save the lives of those in need through organ donation.

To those that have had the privilege of knowing John, knows that he was a truly amazing person who would never hesitate to help those in need. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, pop-pop, brother and friend. His family was everything to him, he never loved in vain and was always willing to give others another chance.

John lived life to the fullest and died shortly after his 59th birthday. We miss and love him every day and although he is not physiclly present in our lives, he still lives on through others and will remain in our hearts forever.

We continue to grieve his sudden loss however we are filled with great joy knowing he was able to give a little of himself to ensure a better quality of life in someone else. We know he would not want it any other way. Please help us honor John and all those who gave, pay tribute to those who received, offer hope to those still waiting and remeber the lives lost while waiting for the Gift of Life.

John's Journey John's Journey started June of 2012 when he received a life saving heart transplant after being admitted to the hospital and being told he would not be leaving without a new heart. What started out as a trip in for general testing, ended up being the start of John's transplant story.

By a miracle, after just 8 days on the transplant list, John received the gift of life, when an donor heart became available. We now call the night of June 1st his "Heart Birthday/Anniversary".

Since his heart transplant, John has had the joy of becoming a Grandpa to 3 adorable Grandchildren and well as seeing his own children get married. The first last Aug, and 2 more marriages in the coming year. John also had a kidney transplant in May of 2018. The interesting fact behind this kidney transplant, was that he was part of a Kidney donation chain in which his son, John Patrick, donated his own kidney to save a strangers life and his fathers, at the same time. Any of his children, another son and a daughter, would have stepped in and done the same. Because of these amazing live donors and donor families, John is still here to celebrate all the birthdays and milestone with his family and friends, and continue on new adventures.

We are running and walking in celebration of a wonderful husband, father, family man, friend, and mentor! Through organ and tissue donation, Joe saved and enhanced the lives of OVER 70 people.

WE LOVE YOU, WE CELEBRATE YOU, WE MISS YOU!

KTD ACK Our story began in September of 2012. We received a phone call that our dear Katie Ackerman, only 23 years old, had been killed in a car crash. Amongst the devastation, her father, Dennis, received a phone call from the NJ Sharing Network indicating that Katie was an organ donor.

Although Dennis was traumatized and couldn't even make sense of what just happened, he remembered how strongly Katie felt about organ donation and knew this was something that needed to be done.

The most heartfelt gift was then given to Katie's father, Dennis Ackerman; her mother Susan Ackerman; and her sister, Erin Ackerman. Katie's name was etched onto the Landscape of Life in New Providence. It is with sincere gratitude that friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, and immediate family can reflect on Katie's life here, as well as pray for the lives of others.

That year, Katie's family participated in the 5K. Katie's dad had a bad case of arthritis and so be it, he pushed his wife in a wheelchair through the streets of New Providence in Katie's honor.

The team was named KT ACK after her screen name on social media.

We then lost Dennis in January of 2018. He was also able to donate life. What a miracle that people who are living can benefit from a life lost! For this, we are thankful and find comfort. To continue to help raise funds for this miraculous program, we have added an initial, and our team is now named KTD ACK in remembrance of Katie and Dennis. Their memories live in us always, and their donations continue to help those in need.

Team Kidney Beans My Dad, Chip battled most of my life with illness. When I was very young he was diagnosed with Lupus. This long battle finally ended with kidney failure. He was lucky enough to have his sister, Kim, come forward and donate a kidney to him.

Her kidney was strong and gave him 10 years. Although he had many other health issues along the way, it kept him off of dialysis and living a mostly normal life. When he needed a second kidney, I was lucky enough to be a match and I gave him his second kidney.

To be a living donor is an amazing experience. Most people look at it as an amazing gift or sacrifice. I just looked at is what I needed to do to give my dad more years without the horrible three hours of dialysis three times a week.

Even though my kidney was strong, and it gave my dad two wonderful years full of energy and life, he was diagnosed with cancer last August and it took him quickly in October. He had fought most of his life, and he was ready to be done.

My dad was one of the strongest people I know. He was lucky to have two living donor transplants. When I think of all the people waiting for a life saving organ, I just want to be able to spread the word that being a living donor is so easy and such an amazing gift.

My dad was able to walk in the 5K last year as a part of Team Kidney Beans. He was so proud of himself for being able to do it. We walk today in his memory to support all the wonderful things that NJ Sharing Network is doing to help spread the word about organ donation, as well as help people receive the life changing transplants that they need.

We are participating in NJ Sharing Network's 5K Celebration of Life on May 20, 2018 at 10:00 am, located in Long Branch, NJ. We will be honoring the life and gift of my beautiful mother, Carmen Mohamadi, who we lost far too soon.

She was always known for having a heart of gold! Carmen was the woman always willing to wake up early and assist with a school fundraiser, the woman willing to teach children about faith and the light of God during Catechism classes, and the woman willing to give you the coat off of her back if you mentioned you were cold. Carmen passed away suddenly on February 9, 2018, yet, she still managed to provide her greatest gift of all - the gift of life. Carmen gave the gift of life to five people in need through her decision of being an organ donor. Although my mother passed away at only 40 years old, she left behind two daughters that are endlessly proud of her and of all the courageous efforts she left behind in this world. We will forever celebrate her life as if she were right here, and her memory will never fade away from any of us.

Law & Order Why We Run Eight years ago, Melissa and Tom Clarke's father, Jim, passed away. But every cloud has a silver lining. Eight years ago, two people also received the call that the kidney they each desperately needed was finally available. In passing, Jim got to "donate life" -- an extremely rare opportunity given the confluence of circumstances required to do so -- and the Clarkes earned the honor and privilege of becoming a "donor family" -- a fact that has comforted us these last eight years.

If you're not already registered as an organ donor, please consider doing so. It isn't just about the strangers you could help. It could also be the silver lining for the loved ones you leave behind.

Why Team Law & Order Tom is a police officer, and Melissa is a lawyer (and once upon a time, she worked at the storied Manhattan DA's office). Jim was pretty proud of his kids. Also, Jim and Melissa loved watching Dick Wolf's original police procedural and legal drama. Notably, when Jerry Orbach (a/k/a NYPD Detective Lennie Briscoe) passed in 2004, he gave the gift of sight to two New Yorkers when his eyes were donated! Whether you're in law enforcement or just love a good legal drama, we'd be happy to have you join us!

Team Liberty is comprised of organ, tissue, and corneal transplant recipients and their families, donor families, living donors, and medical, donation/transplantation professionals from the NJ, NY, and CT tri state area. We come together at the Donate Life Transplant Games of America in a different city every two years to promote the success of transplantation, to raise awareness for the urgent need for organ and tissue donation, to increase the number of registered donors, and to honor donors and their families who have so generously given the gift of life. The Transplant Games is a multi-day athletic competition for organ, tissue, bone marrow, and corneal transplant recipients and living donors ages 2 -99. Over 40 teams across the U.S. compete in a variety of athletic and non-athletic events. There are also inspiring programs for donor families and all attendees. There is something for everyone!

Team Liberty also gathers year-round at educational, outreach, and fundraising events in our local communities to raise awareness and to support those touched by donation and transplantation. This includes NJSN’s fabulous 5K’s, where Team Liberty’s 5K team can be found in their Team Liberty t-shirts as walkers, runners, or volunteers, sharing in the energy and inspiration that is always at the center of these yearly events! We welcome new team members with open arms, so please join us if you’re not already part of a team.

NJ Sharing Network is the proud host of the 2020 Donate Life Transplant Games at the Meadowlands in New Jersey with Team Liberty as the host team. It has been rescheduled to July of 2021 and is a great opportunity for many more Team Liberty members to experience everything the Transplant Games has to offer and to raise awareness in our area together. Funds raised by Team Liberty’s 5K team will be used to assist with Team Liberty expenses and grants benefiting team members.

Team Liberty is a program of NJ Sharing Network. It is managed by Team Liberty volunteers, partnering with NJ Sharing Network to work towards their shared mission to save and enhance lives through organ and tissue donation. Team members from NJ, NY, and CT also volunteer with their own local donation, transplantation, and other related organizations in their community.

Linda’s Home Team On June 29, 2012, my little sister Linda received her new kidney.

Linda was born with bad kidneys. As she got older, her kidney function declined at at age 13 she was in need of a kidney transplant. My mom was not a match and my dad also has cystic kidneys, so neither of them could be her donor. I started a Facebook page My Little Sister Needs A Kidney in hopes to find her a donor.

In addition to the Facebook page, Linda registered with the NJ Sharing Network. On June 28, 2012, Linda had a doctors appointment that would put her on dialysis. The night before at 2am, we got a call the the NJ Sharing Network had a perfectly matched kidney for my little sister. We took Linda to the hospital and by the next day, she had her new kidney. The NJ Sharing Network saved Linda's life, and we will be forever great full.

Team LJM Please join our family in a 5K walk/run with the Sharing Network, on May 17th in Long Branch NJ. We are very excited to do this walk in honor of my father, Luis Jaime Martinez for the second year! As many of you know, he received the gift of a kidney transplant. He believed in organ and tissue donation so much, so we know he would have a lot of pride knowing he was able to donate himself. Our team name is Team LJM. Luke David Bautista was born on April Fool’s Day 2001. He brought love and laughter to everyone he came in contact with during his entirely too short 15 years. Luke lived life in a remarkable way. ​He was kind, caring, funny, unique, adventuresome and creative. He instinctively shared his happiness with all around him and thoroughly entertained everyone who had the pleasure of being in his presence. Luke had a great love of music, attended countless rock concerts and was an aspiring drummer. He had a passion for creating movies and videos and greatly enjoyed his TV Production class along with the TV Production Club at his high school. The combination of his humor and creativity led to a multitude of highly entertaining videos. He loved nature and spending time outside, especially riding his bike, hiking, chilling out on the roof, in the hot tub or at the beach. He was always thinking entirely outside of the norm and introduced us to things we never would have experienced without his way of seeing life.

Luke’s light continues to live on within the people he was able to save through organ donations. He was able to provide 5 life saving gifts (his heart, both kidneys, liver and pancreas). Luke was unable to donate his lungs, but was able to gift his descending thoracic aorta, which aided in the creation of approximately 30 dialysis ports. That combined with his skin and tissue donations have helped close to 100 people. He is truly a hero in our eyes but not only through the gifts he provided. He is a hero because of the way he lived his life and the impact he had on so many people. He made every moment of his life count, he was never afraid to be himself, and he took time every day to make other people smile.

As members of Team Luke, our goal is to not only honor Luke’s memory by celebrating his life and applauding what he was able to give, we also want to follow his example and continue spreading love, laughter and light. What better way than by honoring those who gave, paying tribute to those who received, and offering hope for those who continue to wait for their life-saving gifts.

Team Maeve The Brave Maeve Annette Behan passed away on August 13, 2017, a week shy of her fourth birthday. She always wanted to be a super hero and now she truly is. Maeve saved four lives by

donating her organs through the NJ Sharing Network.

Maeve’s heart saved a one year old boy, her liver a one year old girl and her kidneys saved two adult men. We are so proud of her strength.

has been the rainbow at the end of the storm. Maeve was a beautiful little girl who touched so many lives. She was a firecracker and liked to stomp her foot to get her point across. She was also a very

loving child. She loved to cuddle on the couch sucking her thumb and twirling her hair. She is forever in our hearts.

Marino Makes Miracles Nicholas became an organ donor in December of 2015 at the age of 24.

He is known as our “Christmas Angel.” He gave 5 families the ultimate gift, the gift of life. I am in contact with all 5 recipients and they are all doing fine. Nicholas now experiences life through his recipients and sees and travels through the lives of others. Nicholas has taught my family and I the importance of organ donation and how important it is to be a caring and selfless person.

As Nicholas’ mom, I couldn’t be prouder of the decision he made to be an organ donor!

Team Martial Arts for Life was formed by Michelle Brugger, tissue recipient and owner of Martial Arts for Life academy in New Providence, NJ as a way to thank all donor families for the selfless gift of organ and tissue donation.

IN MEMORY OF ARNOLD STRONG

We are Team Meow and this will be our 3rd year participating in the NJ Sharing Network 5k! But this year we will be running and walking for a different reason. Our captain Christine Archer was a living kidney donor for her uncle, Arnold Strong on 1/11/11. Arnold waited years for the call for a life saving kidney transplant but the call never came. But luckily Christine was a perfect match and the transplant was a huge success!

He was given an extra 4 ½ years thanks to Living Donation. This year we will be running and walking in memory of him. We all miss you so much Arnold!!

Team MICHAEL FITZPATRICK’S GIFT

Michael passed away May 18, 2017 - four days shy of his 38th birthday.

Team Michael Fitzpatrick’s Gift was formed just a few days later.

Twenty of us walked in the June 4, 2017 5K in New Providence in Michael’s memory - heartbroken and dazed beyond words by the sudden loss of this vibrant, funny, talented, loving guy.

To know Michael was to love him. He truly would light up a room. His smile was beautiful, his laugh contagious, his quick wit and sense of humor was wonderful. He was the best son, husband, nephew, cousin and friend anyone could ever ask for. Michael loved music and was a very talented musician - he could play a pretty mean guitar. The Mets was his baseball team and yes, when it came to football JETS JETS JETS! Each year, Michael’s family and friends will participate in the 5K as Team Michael Fitzpatrick’s Gift to honor him and to celebrate his gift of life…

Michael’s heart beats in the chest of another man, his corneas gave the gift of sight to another and his tissue helped to improve countless lives.

Miles for Maddie

All of us who were lucky enough to know Maddie remember a beautiful little girl who always had a big smile on her face. Our team captains, Madelyn Fama, April Doyle, and Katie McCluney, wrote this about their friend: “Maddie was a very special friend with a great sense of humor. She always had a huge smile on her beautiful face. She loved the color blue, cotton candy, butterflies, and pandas. She also loved hanging out at the pool with friends. Maddie always saw the good in people, and she once said, ‘My gift is to share.’ One of her greatest gifts was the organs she donated to help other people.

Missy’s Miracle

Missy’s Miracle celebrates Missy Rodriguez and the life-saving liver transplant she received over 31 years ago. She was the first 10year-old to receive a successful liver transplant. Since her surgery, Missy has led an active and fulfilling life as an accomplished athlete, successful student earning two graduate degrees and, most importantly, the mother of three healthy, active boys.

In addition to their annual participation in the 5K Celebration of Life, Missy’s Miracle also supports education as a family fund under the NJ Sharing Network Foundation. Each year, Missy’s Miracle awards scholarships to high school students whose lives have been touched by organ and tissue donation and transplantation. It is through this and other community focused programs that Missy is able to give back for the gift that saved her life.

Team Monroe Share A Spare Facebook post September 14, 2018: “…This is not an easy letter for me to write, but I know that without sending this, someone who might be interested in helping me won’t have that opportunity. … Please consider this and consider being tested to be a donor for me.” That same day my donor’s response came via Facebook Messenger “I’m blood type O+, ready, willing, and able. It was my neighbor.

The hospital phone call came Christmas week— we are a MATCH!!! I am shouting my news from the rooftops—I have hit the lottery! No, not the mega ticket, much, much more valuable —The gift of Life!!!

Our surgery was performed at St. Barnabas in Livingston, NJ on January 22, 2019 and was broadcasted live for the Live From Kidney Transplant session associated with The Live From Surgery program at the Liberty Science Center.

This life changing experience has convinced me that there are many, many good, caring and altruistic people in this world, contrary to the bad in the world and all the terrible things we hear on the news.

Ocean Place Resort & Spa During a 34 week ultrasound, my cousin Alyssa and Ray experienced a horrible surprise as they were told baby Xander had critical aortic stenosis, a congenital heart defect that was inherited through Alyssa’s family. They were then immediately sent to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and within an hour they were seen by the top pediatric cardiologists. They were told once the baby was born, the doctors would perform a balloon valvuloplasty which is a tiny catheter inserted in Xander’s heart that helps expand his narrow aortic valve to allow more blood flow to the body. Due to the narrow aortic valve in the womb, the only set backs were that his left ventricle and mitral valve were overworked and severely damaged as well.

Alyssa spent 2 weeks on a high risk obstetric floor to monitor Xander closely. He proved to be a stubborn boy and began having decelerations, so it was decided May 3rd that Alyssa would undergo a C-section the following morning. On May 4, 2018 at 11:36AM their beautiful baby boy had finally arrived at 8 lbs and 11 ounces, 22 inches long. The couple only had merely 30 seconds to see and not even touch their bundle of joy as he was immediately rushed to NICU. Xander underwent his procedure with much hope from the cardiologists that it would be successful. Sadly, there was no improvement with his aortic stenosis and after a few weeks Xander began to have a larger left ventricle and mitral valve regurgitation. After seven weeks, Xander was decompensating having respiratory issues and bradycardia. The poor baby had gotten so bad that they had to do compressions and intubate him in order to stay alive.

Luckily, he was placed on the transplant list on June 21, 2018 and the doctors said he is a lot more stable since being intubated.

Xander has made strides to recover from his severe heart failure with help from medications, respiratory therapists, a nasal feeding tube, the wonderful doctors and nurses, and huge prayers from all their family and friends. Baby Xander received his donor heart on September 26th, 2018 and is doing amazing when it comes to his transplant!

Xander is our X-man the Warrior! It is an honor and privlage to walk with the NJ Sharing Network in celebration of our X-Man the Warrior!

Xander is currently a warrior fighting Hepatoblastoma (a form of liver cancer). He was diagnosed in September 2019, cancer free in December 2019, and had a relapse in February 2020. Xander is a fighter and we have no doubt he will kick cancers butt!

THE ORGAN-IZERS As many of you know I am part of a large and generous family.

We have ďŹ ve living kidney donors on our honor role, and we all feel that donor awareness is an extremely important topic.

Team RB Team RB was created by Christine Linton, the oldest sister of Robert Bruce Linton III. In 2004, Robert was struck and killed by a negligent driver on his 11th Birthday.

Shortly prior to the accident, Robert had seen "organ donor" on my mom's driver's license. He asked her what that meant, she told him and immediately he said he wished to be an organ donor.

Unfortunately, due to Robert's injuries and life-saving attempts, Robert was unable to donate life. In the weeks after Robert's passing, neighborhood children set up a lemonade stand and raised money in Robert's tribute to The Sharing Network.

The creation of Team RB was to allow friends and family to celebrate the life that Robert had and remember the amazing person he was. While Robert was unable to donate life...we call him a Donor in Spirit thanks to all of the generous contributions the NJ Sharing Network has received in his honor. The day of the Celebration of Life 5K is a way to connect with our family and friends, spread awareness around the community and share memories of an amazing son, brother, grandchild, friend, neighbor, student, cousin and boy.

Team RB continues to grow year after year with more friends and family participating, getting involved and Robert's family growing with his niece and nephews.

Remembering Robin My family and I have participated in the Sharing network 5K since its beginning in 2011.We walk in honor of my beautiful bride, Robin.

Robin and I had been married for 27 years and we had two wonderful children. She was my soul mate and best friend. My life was perfect! One morning she woke, complaining of a severe headache. 4 hours later she died. March 2, 2010.

While in the hospital, a doctor approached me and discussed organ donation. I spoke with my daughters and they persuaded me to donate Robin’s organs. We have since had the honor of meeting the recipient of Robin’s heart, and the daughter of a man who received Robin’s kidney.

I got to see first-hand how organ donation was truly a miracle.

Since Robin’s passing, my family and I have been on a crusade, preaching about the importance of organ donation.

So, anyone who has not given thought to this, I urge you to consider it.

Rhat Pack My father received a lifesaving liver transplant five years ago. This blessed gift from a total stranger has not only given my father a second chance at life, but has offered his entire family a second chance at creating memories. We are forever grateful! This is our third year and we are excited that thanks to all of our friends and family we continue to grow and raise awareness for organ donation!

Robert's Crew Let’s celebrate Life virtually on Sunday, May 17th, 2020!

This will be our second year participating in the NJ Share 5K to honor those who gave and received the gifts of life.

On June 13, 2018 at the age of 24, Robert changed my world. Through his strength and donation of his life, he reminds us every day is a gift and not to be taken for granted. Love is forever in our heart and his spirit is always alive within all of us.

If you knew Robert, it would not surprise you that he signed up to be an organ donor that gave people a better quality of life through bone and tissue donation. He left this world providing a gift for eight people. The gift of corneal restoration, skin grafts, saphenous veins that helped people with poor circulation and bone grafts to prevent someone from needing an amputation.

Robert was an incredible Son, Brother, Nephew, and Friend to all! He always made you smile with his crazy laugh, dancing up a storm, and always doing his best to bring a smile to your face.

Robert always lit up the room everywhere he went.

ROD TEMPLON’S RUNNERS On September 15, 2016 Rod Templon passed away and gave the gi of life to others. His family and friends are gathering together to celebrate and honor his life.

Rod's Runners is a team of runners, walkers, and volunteers assembled of the community and family that have helped each other grieve and celebrate the life he gave to others a er his passing. The NJ Sharing Network has also been there every step of the process with Rod's family, providing regular check-ins and other donor family support.

Team Ron

We lost Ron in March of 2011 at 47 years of age. Ron was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend to many. His spunky, sweet, yet rough around the edges personality, has left a lasting impression on every person who had the honor of meeting him.

Since Ron’s passing, the NJ Sharing Network has helped our family to find light in the darkest of days.

This organization has played a pivotal role in helping us to turn our grieving for Ron into a celebration of his life. Through tissue and organ donation, Ron has been able to give back to over 50 people in need.

The recipients of Ron’s gifts have ranged from children to the elderly. He has saved eye sight, rehabilitated injuries & provided new life to those who were out of options.

Not only has the NJ Sharing Network given Ron’s life new meaning, it has provided an avenue for Ron’s family and friends to get together and celebrate in his honor. 2017 will mark the 3rd year that Team Ron will participate in the NJ Sharing Network 5K. The team consists of over 50 members of Ron’s family and friends and has raised over $15,000 in its first two years. Getting together for the 5K has become an event that the whole team looks forward to as a time to reconnect and remember our beloved Ron in a joyous, celebratory fashion.

Second Chance I raise funds to honor my girlfriend, Tanya. Tanya was eleven years old and getting ready for school, when she suffered a stroke. As a result of the stroke, it was determined that Tanya had a life threatening condition known as Restrictive Cardiomyopathy and would need a lifesaving heart transplant, that was nearly nineteen years ago. Today, Tanya is preparing to start her nursing career, after successfully completing an accelerated nursing program and passing her boards. She looks forward to giving back, just as so many nurses did for her. Join me in honoring those who gave, paying tribute to those who received, offering hope to those who continue to wait, and remembering the lives lost while waiting.

Some Assembly Required In June 2013, Jim received a life-altering medical diagnosis - end stage liver disease due to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

In March 2014, he received an incredible gift - the liver transplant that would save his life.

This year, we walk in celebration of 5-years of good health, in thanks for the incredible generosity of his donor, and in fervent hope for those on the waiting list.

Both Jim and his wife Tara are certified NJ Sharing Network volunteers and are thrilled to support this outstanding organization in its mission of education, advocacy, and saving lives through organ and tissue donation.

TEAM SORRENTINO Two years ago my brother Brad Sorren no suered a trauma c head injury from a tragic work accident.

Brad was a son, a brother, a father and a husband and was loved by all for his sense of humor and his ability to light up the room. Above all things, Brad was an Organ Donor and saved the lives of many with his gi s of life. Please join our team to celebrate Heroes like Brad, and raise awareness for the countless others on the transplant list wai ng for their gi !

Standin' for Brandon As this will be our first of many walks with the NJ Sharing Network, we are so happy to be able to be apart of something so amazing.

Brandon gained his wings on February 11th 2020. He was just 24 years young, he would have been 25 on May 8th. We want to walk in his memory and bring awareness to the good about organ donation.

Our beautiful Brandon managed to save 55 lives. That in its own is a miracle.

Team Stevie B.

Team Stevie B. honors the memory of Steve Ben'Ary. Steve was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease in 1977. He was activated on the list for a kidney transplant in 1994 and received the transplant in 1999. In those 12 years he was able to enjoy his son's graduation from college and law school, attend his son's wedding and meet his two incredible grandchildren.

His donor was an 18-year-old girl who died in an auto accident. She gave the most precious gift one human being can give to another.

Steve passed away on February 28, 2012 from congestive heart failure and pneumonia.

His family and friends will never forget him or the impact he made on our lives.

STOP FOR NIKHIL TEAM

Nikhil was a talented, fun loving, caring and compassionate 11-year old boy. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was eager to learn and explore the world. He was a dedicated straight-A student, a gifted musician, and most of all a loving son, brother, and friend.

With his pure heart and a smile always on his face, he was ready and willing to help others. Nikhil accomplished so much and made a difference in so many people’s lives during the short time he was with us. His smile was infectious, his sweetness was remarkable and his dedication to any task he took on was commendable. Nikhil continues to touch everyone’s life even now. Nikhil’s cornea and heart valve were donated after his death in 2011. Now a young man is able to see this world through his beautiful eyes.

His family and friends set up the Nikhil Badlani Foundation to honor his memory. The mission of the Foundation is to nurture musical and academic talent of the children and to raise traffic safety awareness.

Every September the Foundation hosts the STOP For Nikhil 5K Run/Walk to remember and honor those who have died or have been seriously injured in motor vehicle crashes. This year the event will be held on September 21, at the West Orange High School.

Strides to Remember Joey Bakos September 29, 2019 we lost Joey to a tragic car accident.

He was only 17 years young with his whole life ahead of him. Our family, friends, and community were absolutely devastated by his loss and we know he will be remembered for his amazing personality, ability to make anyone smile, and impact he had on so many at such a young age.

Although Joey was lost so suddenly we as a family decided to make the choice to help Joey help others one last time. Through the NJ Sharing Network he was able to do tissue donation and significantly help the lives of up to 75 people.

We now walk with all of the other family and friends that have been impacted by this network either through loved ones who saved/helped other or the recipients of said donations. We walk to remember Joey. We walk to remember the good he was in life, and the good he was able to do after death.

Team Summit Sarah will be celebrating her 7 year transplant anniversary this June. Each year we walk in the NJ Sharing Networks 5k in honor of Sarah's good health and for all those people who continue to wait for their life saving transplant.

Our Team Story We are “Team Susie”. We are running and walking, out of our love for our dear friend Susie, who we lost very suddenly on July 6, 2011. She was doing her daily run and was on vacation in Cape May. She suffered a stroke at age 41.

Although we all miss her so very much, we also remember the incredible joy she brought to each of our lives.

Susie made us all feel good. Susie was caring, vibrant and lived her life with great generosity. She never forgot a birthday, because it was important to her that each person in her life should feel special. So it is not surprising to anyone that her generosity was continued with her gifts of life, through her being an organ donor. We are to support and honor all Organ Donors, their Loving Families and all Organ Recipients.

About Susie: She was a Much Loved Mom to her amazing son Jake, in 7th grade now.

Also a loved Daughter, Sister, Cousin, Niece, Aunt, Granddaughter, Goddaughter, Godmother, & Friend.

Susie was a beautiful woman, with a gorgeous smile. She brought smiles to everyone else.

Having Susie around meant fun was about to occur. We can’t help but think of Susie performing her “worm dance” at every fun friend get-together. She liked theme parties, togas and pretty much, parties in general.

Her joy was in gathering family and friends together.

So it was fitting that she found her niche in being a successful event planner in her professional life, and her clients adored her.

Susie loved writing poems for some birthdays and for including with annual Christmas cards. So here is a poem for Susie: Dear Susie, Your life was a precious gift But how were we to know, You would leave us too soon That it was your time to go?

It has been so hard not to see you Or hear your voice every day.

Your laughter and kindness Helped us all make our way.

We miss you so much For us, losing you is still hard to bear But in knowing you helped others Helps us heal, and see your loving care.

You gave so much of yourself, Every day you lived, far or near.

So it seems fitting to see, You are still giving, with all your gifts of life still here.

TEAM T-BONES CREW Todd Allen Holloway On March 11, 2017 a light was ex nguished when Todd passed from a sudden cardiac arrest. He was known by many names: father, husband, brother, uncle, cousin, nephew, godfather, colleague, roommate, friend, and son.

His light did not go totally out because Todd has given the ul mate gi of sharing to the NJ Sharing Network and Eversight to allow his life forces to con nue in helping others to con nue to live a full life.

He is part of a gene c study at Johns Hopkins for ARVD/C. We have joined this organiza on to help spread the awareness of ARVD/C which was not diagnosed at the me he ďŹ rst became ill. More research is needed and this disease needs to be addressed by medical personnel. Without a heart MRI, 24 hour halter monitor, and an echo this disease can't be found.

TheNobleFish As I am celebrating my lung transplant 20 years post. In fact Gwenn's Mom Sandra is on the list for a liver transplant we decided it was very important to make a team and support the NJ Sharing Network.

We hope to see you there!

Tim's Rangers April 22, 1999, Tim walked to a friends house to pick up some hockey equipment. On his way home, he was hit by a car and passed away. At that time, we decided that we should donate his organs. They were able to use his cornea's and heart valves.

As you can imagine, this was a very difficult time for us, but we find comfort in knowing that donating his organs would help others. It was the one good thing that came of this tragedy.

Since that time, I have volunteered for the NJ Sharing Network and started participating in the 5K (2013). Tim's Rangers started with a small group of 3 (2014) and have grown to a team of about 50 and we hope to keep growing our team.

This event means so much to us. It is a celebration of life. It is such an uplifting event and we appreciate the effort of the NJ Sharing Network puts into it!

TEAM TINK Saving and enhancing lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation is something that inspires me every day. Like all of our local healthcare heroes, NJ Sharing Network’s clinical staff continue to bravely work on the frontlines during this pandemic to coordinate life-saving transplants and honor organ and tissue donors and their families.

Because of this, I am excited to participate in the 5K Celebration of Life with Team Tink to raise funds to support donor families, as well as research and education to help give the gift of life to those in need of life-saving organ and tissue transplants.

I began my involvement with the Sharing Network in 2009. The NJ Sharing Network continues to educate and provide me with so much knowledge regarding the transplant process. As the Captain of Team Tink, I have had the opportunity to meet so many inspiring people that shared their wonderful stories of the Gift of Life. Here is my story: I thank my donor everyday for her love and courage. Esther's family embraced her decision to donate life. Because of her, I have been able to lead a healthy life. I am able to work, be active and enjoy life. On June 27, 2020 it will be 10 years! I cherish her friendship and embrace her love.

My family carries the gene for Polycystic Kidney Disease. The disease ripped it's way through my family one by one. I was young when I lost my mother, brother and sister to this disease. Unfortunately, I lost all three immediate family members as well as aunts and uncles. I miss them all. I know they are proud of my dedication to the Sharing Network.

This year’s event will be held virtually online on Sunday, May 17. I hope you can join me and tune in from 10:00am to 11:30am at NJSharingNetwork.org/5K for an inspirational live and interactive program. Although we cannot come together in person for the 5K, we will not miss the opportunity to honor organ and tissue donors and celebrate the gift of life!

Today, there are 115,000 people nationwide waiting for a transplant and 20 die each day. One donor can save eight people and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 people.

Team Tinman My team has been walking since the very first walk. I lost my partner Patrick in January of 2010 and I found my way to you shortly after. My team has changed over the years. The members fluctuating. My sister Diana has walked with me in everyone and the last few years my sister in law and my very best friend have rounded out the core of our team. I walk fro Patrick, who received a heart transplant in 2005 and it was the greatest gift we ever received. The heart that loved me came from a stranger and it is one of the most meaningful and amazing thing that has ever happened to me. Patrick had an underlying issue, a very rare disease called Amyloidosis that took him from me to soon. I walk for Patrick, and my team walks with me for Patrick too. I'd like to thank them for always being there for me and I'd like to thank you for all you did for me and for all you do for so many that still wait or have made the ultimate gift.

We were surprised and proud to learn he was an organ donor and have found comfort in his selfless act and that he will live on in others. This has opened a whole new community and world for us and we are proud to support organ donation and meeting all of those impacted in our community. Thank you NJ Sharing Network for all you do- we love you all! This is our first 5k of many more to come.

It is hard to believe I have been one of the lucky ones as I am going into my 4th year with an outstanding state of health due to my generous and selfless donor. My donor saved my life, providing me with 2 of his organs and there are no words to describe the graciousness of numerous donors that save lives every day. However, please know we need more people to spread the word of the importance of signing up to be a donor as many people die waiting for that perfect match. People often wait years and many never see the day that they are fortunate to get a transplant to give them another chance at life. Please know that your generous donation not only helps those that wait but You are helping the Sharing Network to continue to do research and help them find that perfect match for those that wait(as they did for me.) You are also helping us bring awareness to a cause that is often overlooked but that so many of us need. Some day you or a loved one may be in the situation as many of us have been in or still are, and you will be happy to know that you did all you could to help those in need and the foundation will be there for you if needed. Life is so unpredictable, never say never because most of us could not have ever imagined or predicted we would be waiting for an organ transplant. We Beat as One

Josephine Riley April 2,2014 changed the lives of many people. Josephine suffered a massive heart attack, which spiraled into a long road of hospital visits, an LVAD, and amazing support from friends and family. February 3,2015 was the day Josephine's life changed forever. She finally received her new heart.

Josephine and her family are so thankful to the NJ Sharing Network and to the donor her gave her the second chance, as well as all of the amazing doctors and nurses that aided in her care. Josephine and her friends and family are proud to be supporting such a great cause.

Team Wesley Walkers Our story started 17 years ago when I donated a kidney to my husband, Howard. His family has a history of Polycystic Kidney Disease...5 out of 7 siblings had PKD. All have had kidney transplants, some living donors, some deceased donors.

In 2009 team member, Helen Hunter, joined our church, Wesley United Methodist Church. Helen, also, has PKD. When we started our team Helen was on dialysis and waiting for a kidney. Happily, several months after our first walk Helen received her gift of life on September 5, 2014.

During Lent in 2014, our church embarked on a health and wellness program. At the end of the program, a suggested group activity was to participate in a 5K. Hence the Wesley Walkers was born. We are walking to honor Howard and Helen...those who have received and those who are waiting.
