PANARTS CELEBRATES TWENTY FIVE YEARS 1992–2017 • •
•
Panarts was founded in 1992 to encourage respect for diversity through the arts and international cultural exchange. Our first project was a six month inter-community musicians’ showcase which included three months performing across nine states in America. Over the years we have created and delivered many diversity programmes for schools and communities using the arts including... Learn About Us – a six month community relations programme for primary schools Changing Lifestyles – An intergenerational project exploring the history of the Ards Peninsula Musical Frontiersmen – Songs and stories of Emigration to North America Thirteen years ago we created the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival & Conference to celebrate the art of song writing and since then we have been successfully organising concerts, showcases and music industry meetings in both cities.
“One of the highlights promises to be the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival, which is one of the best showcases for established and emerging talent in Northern Ireland” Belfast Telegraph Editorial “As a performer, some moments stand out amongst the others, gems that remain untarnished in any musician’s career. Those moments that will never be repeated, don't need to be bettered, and will last a lifetime. The Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival delivered this with every gig. The value of this experience as a writer is immeasurable” Stephen Macartney, Local songwriter, part of the Panarts showcase in Nashville

5 Days 30 Concerts 100 Songwriters Becoming a teenager is quite a milestone and this year, BelNash is thirteen years old! 2017 is also a landmark as Panarts celebrates 25 years of exploring diversity through the arts and organising international cultural exchanges. It all began in 1992 with an inter-community project with sixteen unemployed musicians. After three months training in Belfast, we toured for a further three months, across nine States in America, driving from Miami Florida to New York. In BelNash 2017, we’re celebrating the art of song writing, and the cultural links between Belfast and Nashville. This year is going to be very special with award winning artists and twenty five students and staff coming to our festival from Belmont University Nashville. Welcome to Belfast and we know you’re going to enjoy linking with the Panarts Young Songwriter of the Year finalists and the Forestside & Panarts Youth Project. Many local songwriters will benefit from our ‘In The Round’ concerts, changing their musical CV overnight. Each year, local artists make new connections through BelNash and friendships formed often last for years. Special thanks to Panarts Trustees and Volunteers, who help to make it all happen. To Nick Martin for his work on the website, Sean Harty & Paul Digby for design, Les Hume & the Dawsons team. To our Principal Sponsor, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Downtown Radio and to all our sponsors for their support. To Panarts Patrons, Paul Brady and Gallagher & Lyle and especially to the many songwriters who perform. Colin Magee, Panarts Director & Anne Coulter Festival Manager
This year, we’re dedicating our festival to the memory of our good friend in music Bap Kennedy, who died in November 2016. Bap performed in several BelNash festivals, including our very first one in 2005. We’ll continue to remember him through his wonderful songs and our thoughts are with Brenda & family. Colin & Anne

A WORD FROM OUR PATRONS PAUL BRADY ‘Songwriters enrich the sonic backdrop of our daily lives with the inspired work that they do. What a dull world it would we be without them! Often overshadowed by the spotlight on the performer and singer, the annual Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival provides an opportunity to bring song writing talent to the fore and to encourage talented new writers to join the ranks. I look forward to my second appearance at the festival on Thursday 2nd March!’ Paul Brady, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist is one of Ireland's most highly regarded and successful artists. His songs have been covered by artists including Bonnie Raitt, Tina Turner, Cher, Maura O'Connell, Brookes and Dunne, Joe Cocker and Carlos Santana.
BENNY GALLAGHER & GRAHAM LYLE ‘The Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival gives the general public, the aspiring and the professional artist an opportunity to experience and interact with performers from all over the world through the art of song. We commend Panarts for having the vision and courage to take the festival to another level with song writing workshops, mentorship, taking music into schools, providing the chance for all to take advantage of these invaluable opportunities. As musicians, staff songwriters at the Beatles Publishing Company and recording artists, we have been unable to identify an educational programme that is comparable with Panarts methods of nurturing, promoting the art and performance of song so comprehensively within the community. ‘ Legendary song writing duo Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle were chart topping performers in their own right and their songs have been recorded by artists including Tina Turner, Art Garfunkel, Bryan Ferry and Phil Everly.

This concert is a rare opportunity to catch Ryan playing his own unique songs with a full band.
"I launched my debut EP with the Belfast Nashville Songwriters Festival in 2015. One of the main headliners, Foy Vance came to my show. This important international cultural exchange between Panarts and Belmont is the fourth year of a partnership that has resulted in twenty five students and staff coming to BelNash 2017 to meet up with our musicians. It follows on from
July’s visit and many friendships have been formed from our work with Belmont. We were overwhelmed by the standard of song writing talent from this year’s Panarts Young SongWriter of the Year finalists, supported by Avalon Guitars. All eight are featured in this FREE showcase and Triona won the beautiful hand-crafted guitar valued at £3,000. She is also featuring in her own headlining concert on Friday 3rd March at BelNash. 13th PANARTS SONG WRITING CONVENTION Academy Conference Centre, 2nd Floor Clayton Hotel Belfast Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th March It’s year thirteen of the Panarts music industry conference and once again we have award winning artists and performance rights organisations taking part in our two day event. When we created the first music industry conference in Northern Ireland back in 2005, we set out to encourage musicians to learn from each other and to be inspired by award winning international writers. Each year, we’ve brought music industry professionals to Belfast and explored issues relating to copyright, collecting royalties and getting your music into the creative industries. Our 13th Panarts Song Writing Convention is being held in the wonderful Academy Conference Centre at Clayton Hotel Belfast and here is a sample of the topics being covered. SO WHY WRITE SONGS?
