NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK singer DONNIE WAHLBERG came close to death last week (beg24Nov08) after losing control of his car on a highway. The star was driving from San Diego to Los Angeles on Wednesday (26Nov08) night following one of the band's gigs. And Wahlberg was so exhausted after the event, he fell asleep at the wheel and came within inches of smashing his vehicle into the central reservation in the middle of the road. He says, "I nearly crashed my car after the gig. I was driving from San Diego to L.A. and I'd been on the road for three hours. I was so tired that my eyes kept closing. Then I fell asleep and it was raining."

Wahlberg admits he is lucky to have escaped uninjured, but the experience has left him extremely shaken. He adds, "I was like, 'Whoa!' And I've been quiet ever since. I'm so tired."

THE manband reunions are finally complete now the original New Kids are back on the block. Question is, can the Americans compete with our homegrown beloved Take That? Well, they certainly put in 100% effort. Back on the road after 15 years, the Boston boys opened with the Ne-Yopenned Single and set a mood that showed the new material from album The Block is even better than the old hits. Naturally, You Got It (The Right Stuff) and Cover Girl hit the nostalgia button. And the girls screamed louder than their teenage lungs would’ve allowed. But it was the pop perfection of Dirty Dancing (which surely must be the next release) and Joey’s saucy dancing with a laydee during Twisted that sent us back into pure boyband territory. Dripping with raunch, Jordan ripped open his shirt ahead of his solo number Give It To You, then after Click, Click, Click Joey joined in. Coupled with Donnie’s booty-shaking, the lads proved manbands are still a force to be reckoned with

NEW KIDS STAGE PRAYERS BEFORE GIGS New Kids On The Block have revealed they pray before they go on stage. The newly-reformed boy band, now in their 30s and 40s, told the Daily Star that they have their own spiritual way of preparing for a gig."We don't have any superstitions and we haven't been wearing the same pants for good luck but we do a little prayer," said 35-year-old Joey McIntyre. "People take it in turns to say what they wanna say and sometimes we have a quote from the scriptures, or tell a joke, or whatever we need to fit the mood." It appears the prayers are working, as Joey said it was a miracle one of them hadn't fallen off the podium stage yet. "Knock on wood - it's amazing that no one's fallen because there are no railings and it's turning and it's high and bouncy," he said.

LIVE AND DANGEROUS: THE NEW KIDS ARE ALL GROWN UP THE NOSTALGIA WAS IN HIGH GEAR AS FANS TOOK A BLAST TO THE PAST TO WATCH AN ‘80S MUSICAL COMEBACK Megan Telles, Staff Writer They’re back! The New Kids On the Block, also known as NKOTB, came to Cox Arena last Tuesday night to share its late ‘80s boy band style and energy with San Diego. NKOTB was back on stage to make the ladies scream as it performed a flawless concert. Nostalgia was in the air as “N.K.O.T.B” was repeatedly chanted and could also be seen written across T-shirts throughout the audience. But before the audience could see the “kids,” Lady GaGa and Natasha Bedingfield warmed up the crowd with their opening performances.

and Danny Wood — The New Kids On The Block were back. The band performed “Single” from its 2008 comeback album “The Block.” Wahlberg, sporting a Boston Red Sox baseball cap, was pleased with the powerhouse chanting of the crowd and stood on stage in apparent awe at the amount of ladies the band still had screaming for them. Finally he was able to speak. “What we had back in the day was for real!” he yelled. This moment set the tone for the remainder of the night.

These two artists elevated the intensity of the passionate crowd. First to take the stage was Lady GaGa, who gave a powerful electric-pop performance. Bedecked with a shimmered body suit and bold, blonde hair, her energy was contagious as the lights popped and flashed with the beats. Her oomph, coupled with her booty shaking and singing, was definitely entertaining to watch as she performed her hit single, “Just Dance,” which had everyone on their feet. As she wrapped up her performance, she expressed her excitement for NKOTB and reassured the crowd that, despite its age, NKOTB is better than ever, by yelling, “The New Kids aren’t kids anymore!” Next on stage was Bedingfield. Bedingfield took control of the crowd with her unerring talent and casual style. She reminded the crowd that “a night like this is about letting go, having fun and being free.” The Grammy-nominated performer hit her high notes with grace as she brought a more mellow energy than Lady GaGa. Bedingfield performed some of her greatest hits such as “These Words,” “Unwritten” and “Pocket Full Of Sunshine.” The optimistic lyrics of her songs correlated with her positive attitude, which she shared with the crowd, as she belted out the lyrics “live your life with arms wide open.” Bedingfield and Lady GaGa were the perfect opening acts for the heart-throbbing men of NKOTB. After a fifteen-minute intermission, the lights shut off, smoke emanated from the stage and suddenly there they were: Jordan and Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg

After the performance of its hit single “You Got It (The Right Stuff),” it was clear to see that the old-school dance moves were the “right stuff” for the women too. The responses to its old and new hits were promising and it’s for certain that this comeback will be successful. There were handmade posters held by people screaming, “Face time,” and sure enough the band got the memo. The cameraman even came onstage, signaling the crowd to get up and dance, to be captured on the Jumbotron. NKOTB did all it could to fulfill what its fans had anticipated. The band members spoke to the crowd directly, explaining they had already been to 48 cities, and San Diego was by far the rowdiest. NKOTB had special details that set its tour apart from other music performers that simply take the stage by doing the same old thing by making special tribute to popular musicians, actors and family members who have passed away over the years. A slideshow appeared on the screens, with faces such as Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Left Eye, Heath Ledger and Betty Wood, Danny Wood’s mother. Wood was coined one of “The New Moms On The Block.” She passed away in 1999 and because of her powerful influence as an incredible mother to Wood a tribute to the Betty Wood Breast Cancer Foundation ended the night. The Block told the story of her life and death and explained the NKOTB T-shirt fundraiser, which helps support her foundation. The New Kids On the Block are the originators of the boy band genre that has led the way for more recent pop boy bands such as *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Its tour has taken the audience back to the roots of this genre and also reminded everyone that even though life rolls on, there are some things that never change.

REGRESAMOS PARA Y POR LA MÚSICA: NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK CIUDAD DE MÉXICO, México, nov. New Kids On The Block.

LOS NEW KIDS, EN CIUDAD DE MÉXICO El grupo musical estadounidense New Kids On The Block regresó a la escena musical con sus integrantes originales.

Jordan Knight.

WHO IS THE SEXIEST GROUP OF 2008 From music to TV to movies, hot guys are one of the many reasons we keep coming back to our guilty pleasures for more. As the Jonas Brothers continued to rise to stardom this year, the original boy band New Kids on the Block made their triumphant return. The Gossip boys and the cast of High School Musical stayed cute but had to make way for the guys of 90210 and Twilight. There were old favorites and newcomers, but tell us — who is the sexiest group of 2008?

nkotbthing.com USA BOSTON HERALD. THE EDGE 12.08.2008 www.bostonherald.com

BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS ARE A PRIVATE AFFAIR It wasn’t MTV’s VMAs, but our own BMAs, where the New Kids on the Block won big. Last night at the 21st Boston Music Awards at the Roxy, New Kids Donnie Wahlberg and Jordan Knight picked up the boy band’s National Act of the Year award. After a crack about not winning a Grammy when Milli Vanilli did, Wahlberg said: “We’d rather have this than a Grammy any day.” It was cool. The 30-something women became screaming tweens instantly. But it was the only VMA-ish moment of the night. Breaking from the typical public ceremonies at the Orpheum, this year’s BMAs were a private event at the Tremont Street clubs for nominees and industry types. (A few $150 VIP tickets were sold to the public to benefit the Music Drives Us Foundation.) Seemingly the idea behind the local showcase is to, well, showcase locals. But with local fans shut out, the event became a vaguely rocking, appropriately awkward holiday social. Without the spotlight-stealing, not-as-exciting-as-we’d-hoped Extreme reunion and Bobby Brown cameo from last year, this was all about locals cramming their best into 20-minute sets. Many complained about the plug being pulled on the Underbar DJs Baltimoroder and Red Foxx before the 9:30 p.m. awards announcements - who wants to shake it at 7:30 after one cosmo? But the BMAs got in a few nice early performances. Downstairs at the Pearl, College Band of the Year Bearstronaut rocked hard to a tiny crowd at 7:15. With an indie rock take on California AM gold, Drug Rug, Best Song of the Year nominee, got a great response from a growing audience. Then Hip-Hop nominee Big Digits alienated half the packed dance floor and got the other half grooving with some geeky hip-hop. Upstairs at the Roxy, Outstanding Folk Artist Miss Tess didn’t do folk, but a set of dressed-up, low-down jazz. Coming off a win at this year’s BCN Rock and Roll Rumble, Girls Guns and Glory nabbed both Outstanding Americana Act and Local Act of the Year - and with Ward Hayden’s wicked high and lonesome voice, put a sweet set. Like the show, the crowd was an odd mix: slinky cocktail dresses and stilettos next to the Central Square chic of ratty sweaters and skinny jeans. But, like at any good holiday party, the awkwardness melted with a few drinks. And despite its best efforts to bomb - the 30-minute, rapid-fire awards ceremony was clumsy and still excruciatingly long - the BMAs were loose and fun. Sure, they didn’t do much to publicize local music and the place was clearing out by 11, but a boozed-up winter ball beats a broken-down B-list parade of past Boston rockers any day.

MILEY, ANGELINA, BRITNEY, L.C.: THE YEAR'S BIGGEST SELL-OUTS Everyone's a critic—including, it seems, PayPal-enabled web crawlers, who this year voted en masse with their dollar on who's who (congratulations, Michael Phelps) and who's over (sorry, Speidi) in pop culture. Coming out tops in this year's celebrity maternity race, at least according to the highly scientific 2008 sales figures released today by eBay, was Gwen Stefani, whose desirability, bolstered either through Brangelina fatigue or her own new-mother charm, wiped the floor with Angelina Jolie, outselling her related merchandise by a margin of nearly 2-1. Which means Stefani, among other credentials, now has the distinction of being the mom you'd most like to buck. But it isn't all good news: Lindsay Lohan's fans, for instance, proved they were not nearly as buy-curious as the actress herself… Among those joining Stefani in the hearts, or at least wallets, of the American public: Miley Cyrus came tops in the celeb sell-out derby, with her Hannah Montana ephemera selling more—at 223,139 items—than the Jonas Brothers and High School Musical cast combined. Of course, slightly scandalous, skin-revealing underage magazine covers do tend to have ways of bringing out particularly deeppocketed anonymous internet users, but a win is a win all the same. Jessica Simpson outsold her would-be romantic rival Carrie Underwood, with Tony Romo's current arm candy selling 59,037 items to his former arm candy's 15,395. Try as Speidi might to dethrone her, Lauren Conrad is still queen of The Hills, outselling to an almost embarrassing degree her longtime frenemies turned pseudo wedding opportunists Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt. While 1,082 Conrad-related items sold on eBay this year, just 323 Montag-related ones did. As for Pratt, just 10 users felt compelled to own some Spencer paraphernalia. As for the past-their-prime comeback kids men, the Backstreet Boys sold fewer than 9,000 items, while the New Kids on the Block hung tough with a solid 30,075 items sold. The gifts that keep on giving—rehabbed starlets—were given in kind last year, with mess-no-more Britney Spears (at 32,966 items) outselling fellow "treated" celebs Amy Winehouse (6,665) and Kirsten Dunst (4,1456). Lohan's fans, meanwhile, shelled out for just 7,899-related items, but still managed to Nicole Richie, whose buying power was only good enough for 842 items. As for those divas, Madonna, as she always tends to do, came out on top, with the Material Girl's fans proving just as material as her and buying 96,511 items. She easily trumped sometime rival and newlywed Mariah Carey, who sold just one-fifth of Madonna's total.

Also MIA was Brian Dennehy, who plays a former mob-boss-turned-florist-shop-owner. TNT didn’t want to discuss the pilot because it hasn’t been picked up yet. But word from set insiders is that the script bears more than a passing resemblance to the Charles Stuart case that rocked Boston nearly two decades ago. Stuart, the yuppie manager of then-prestigious Kakas Furs, shot and killed his pregnant wife, Carol, and blamed the crime on a black robber. Later, Stuart killed himself by jumping off the Tobin Bridge . Yesterday’s scene had Donnie interrogating a Townie waitress, played by Maria Thayer, inside the historic eatery. Director Jon Avnet called “Roll ’em,” while more than 100 extras dined on hot dogs and burgers while Donnie did his thing. Restaurant owner Joe Milano said the TV types chose his restaurant for its “Boston cop feeling.” The production moves to a Chelsea soundstage today.

WAHLBERG AND GANG TAKE OVER OYSTER HOUSE It was barely 10 a.m., and Donnie Wahlberg was sitting at the bar drinking beer. The New Kid nuzzled a young redhead and then joined a few friends for a game of darts. Welcome to "Bunker Hill," the TNT pilot that began filming yesterday inside the historic Union Oyster House. Owner Joe Milano said the cast and crew pulled up at his place at 5 a.m., and went right to work. "It's kind of like a carnival," whispered Milano, watching Wahlberg and Maria Thayer tape the bar scene. "Bunker Hill," which is being produced and directed by Jon Avnet, is about a Charlestown cop, played by Wahlberg, who returns to Boston to serve and protect his peeps. He costars with Brian Dennehy and actress Bridget Moynahan, better known as Tom Brady's girlfriend before Gisele Bundchen. (Bridget wasn't in the scenes shot yesterday.) In addition to the Oyster House, the pilot's being shot in Charlestown, Chelsea, and at the Tobin Bridge. Avnet, who worked with Wahlberg on "Righteous Kill" and "Boomtown," told us he isn't bothered at all by Boston's frigid weather. "These wimps from LA," the Brooklyn-bred director said, motioning to others in the room. "I like to watch them shrivel up in the cold." Also on set yesterday was Walon Green, the screenwriter whose credits include "Hill Street Blues," "Law & Order," and "NYPD Blue." (

NEW KIDS, NEW FORMAT LIFT BMAS By Jonathan Perry Globe Correspondent

Despite being revamped for its 21st birthday, for a moment Sunday night, the Boston Music Awards felt decidedly old school - more 1988 than 2008. That instant came when New Kids on the Block - yes, those NKOTB - won the award for national act of the year. As two of the all-grown-up Kids, Donnie Wahlberg and Jordan Knight, took the podium on the Roxy stage, the air around them seemed a little surreal. BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS At: the Roxy, Sunday night "We haven't had one of these in a long time," cracked Wahlberg. Twenty years ago, he recalled, the Kids were nominated for a Grammy - and lost to Milli Vanilli. "We'd rather have this any day," he said. With a few catcalls ringing out from the competition - namely hip-hop artist Termanology's posse, who shouted "Who the [expletive] is that?" when the New Kids (and anybody else who was up against the Lawrence-bred rapper) were announced as winners, Wahlberg broke into a grin and pointed to the source of the taunts. "He's got it next year," Wahlberg said. When you're part of a group that sold 70 million albums and is in the midst of a highly successful reunion tour, you can afford to be generous. And in fact, Termanology did nab the award for outstanding hip-hop act, and subsequently performed a rousing set to demonstrate why. Award ceremonies can bring out the best - and worst - in people. MC and former WBCN program director Oedipus said that by eliminating acceptance speeches there would be no "drunken rambling" or other embarrassments. Nevertheless, "Music Drives Us" founder and automotive mogul Ernie Boch Jr. launched into some expletive-laden rambling about his band, Ernie & the Automatics, not winning outstanding blues act (which went to pianist David Maxwell) before presenting the newly created Humanitarian of the Year award to Chad Stokes Urmston. Much has been made about the BMAs' move from the Orpheum Theatre to the Roxy (with nominee performances also taking place at Pearl and the Underbar) - and about the ceremony becoming an industry event rather than a public one, but on Sunday, what ultimately stood out was the music. The set lengths - expanded from a one-songand-out format to roughly 25 minutes per artist - offered a substantive taste of each of the 10 nominees who performed. Scituate-bred country traditionalists Girls Guns & Glory, which won local act of the year and outstanding Americana act of the year (its second time winning the latter), delivered a rollicking, revved-up set of honky tonk. The eightpiece Afro-Caribbean outfit Zili Misik, named outstanding international music act, was the undeniable life of the party: infectiously upbeat brass, rhythm, and groove. Outstanding rock act winners Wild Light, from New Hampshire, waved an indie-rock banner built on angular chords and strident melodies. The half-empty dance floor and thinning crowd didn't seem to faze them. Marissa Nadler, who was named outstanding singer-songwriter, was as ghostly a presence as her haunted songs. "I never won anything in my life!," the shocked Needham native blurted out before picking up a 12-string guitar. "Give me a second to tune and I'll play you the saddest song you ever heard." And then she did.

nkotbthing.com BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS 2008 - ACT OF THE YEAR NOMINEES And the nominees are... Take a peak at the eight artists who were nominated for a Boston Music Award in the category Act of the Year National.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK Dorchester is back in the spotlight now that Joey, Jonathan, Donnie, Jordan, and Danny have reunited the New Kids. In the early '90s, these five Boston natives performed to stadiums full of screaming fans. After a nearly 13-year hiatus, they've reunited and have been selling out stadiums all over again. Guess some things never change. (Handout)

NO LOSERS AT 2008 BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS By Megan Vick

There were no tables with white linen tablecloths or women in shimmering designer gowns at the 21st annual Boston Music Awards held at The Roxy, Pearl and Underbar Sunday evening. In fact, there aren’t any tables at all, and the outfits ranged from jeans and button down shirts to mini-dresses and heels.

The Humanitarian Award, created to honor someone who has made a difference in the community through their volunteer efforts to support music, went to Chad Stokes of State Radio. Stokes was noted for using his musical influence to raise funds to help improve the lives of youth in Zimbabwe.

Banners of the award show sponsors were spread along the perimeter of the balcony, surrounding three jumbo projection screens - two in the middle of the purple-themed room and one over the stage where nominees performed throughout the night.

The Unsung Hero Award recognizes respected musicians with strong ties to the Boston area who have never received the national attention they deserve. This year the honor went to Billy Beard, a venue owner in Cambridge and renowned drummer. He spoke proudly of the music scene being honored that night.

Each screen projected a slide show of images that show the work of Music Drives Us, the non-profit organization which the Boston Music Awards benefited this year. Performers, nominees, friends of artists and Boston Music elites all mingled in the -large ballroom, taking pictures with the live action gargoyles on each side of the stage or posing in front of the winners’ press area. Maureen Rose, 28, Christine Rose, 27, Katie O’Connell, 26, were among the guests creating a photo op before the ceremony. “We’re here to support our girl Lisa Bellow. She’s nominated for Best Female Vocalist of the Year, but I’m most excited to see Donnie Wahlberg [of New Kids On The Block]” explained Rose. Despite buzz about the nominees, the message was clear this year focus less on trophies and more on the music of the new England scene. The entire event lasted from seven to two am but the awards portion was squeezed between 9:15 p.m. and 9:45 p.m. Each category and nominee was projected on the large screens, followed by an announcement of the winners who were to report to the side stage to claim their awards and have their picture taken. The new format was implemented for the first time this year to make more time for musical performances and less drunken acceptance speeches, explained radio legend and host of the awards, Oedipus, at the beginning of the ceremony. Only the winners of three out of the 27 categories: the Humanitarian of the Year, Unsung Hero and Artist of the Year — National, collected their awards on stage. Humanitarian of the Year and The Unsung Hero Award were two new special awards added to the ceremony this year.

“After so many years in the industry, this city still represents the best music has to offer,” Beard said. Girls Guns and Glory were big regional winners, taking home awards for both Outstanding Americana Act and Act of the Year - Local. “It’s our first BMA’s. This is a good cap on the year for us,” Colt Thompson, guitar player and back-up vocalist for the band, said between hugs from ecstatic family members. Other winners include Zili Musik for Outstanding International Music Act, Miss Tess for Outstanding Folk Act and Termanology for Outstanding Hip Hop Act, all of whom had performing rights on the stage that night. The most anticipated award of the evening - Act of the Year National went to New Kids on the Block who wrapped up their reunion tour early this fall. “This is better than any Grammy,” rejoiced Donnie Wahlberg, the group’s token bad-boy, as he and fellow band member Jordan Knight accepted the award. Though many may not have taken away a trophy Sunday night at the 21st annual Boston Music Awards, it was clear there were no losers. The focus and goal of the ceremony was to highlight and celebrate the music scene of the greater Boston area and anyone who helped support it was treated like a winner. BOSTON MUSIC AWARDS The Subaru limousine – which I assume belongs to Ernie Boch, Jr. (nominee: Outstanding Blues Act of the Year) – idling outside the Roxy last night was an appropriate metaphor for the 2008 Boston Music Awards. Despite it being a quasi-posh invite-only event (albeit one that any super fan could have easily penetrated), the gala didn’t reek of superficiality. Even in the VIP lounge, where those lucky enough to secure laminates enjoyed free drinks and passed hors d’oeuvres with Donnie Wahlberg (winner: Act of the Year – National), the mood was refreshingly grounded. Very Boston, I might even say.

SUCH A CUTE BABY New Kids On The Block's Joey McIntyre might no longer have a baby face, but he's still way hawt. And his baby is sooooo adorable! Joey and son, Griffin, were spotted Tuesday shopping at The Grove in Los Angeles. If only Griff were a bit older, he'd make a great play date for Suri. He'd even be a gentlemanbaby and give her a damn coat when she's cold!

A ‘FAITHFUL’ BLOG FROM JOE I JUST FINISHED MY MAD HUNT FOR A CHRISTMAS TREE… IT MAKES ME WANNA GO BACK TO NEW ENGLAND, CUT MY OWN DOWN AND DRIVE IT BACK TO LA. YOU NEVER KNOW HOW LONG THEY’VE BEEN STANDING THERE. A WEEK, TWO WEEKS? THEY LOOK GOOD AND HEALTHY IN THE LOT, THEN YA GET ‘EM HOME AND SET IT UP RIGHT OVER THE HEATING VENT AND THEY ARE BROWN IN A WEEK. I HAVE AN AFFECTION FOR THE FOLKS WORKING THE LOTS. I’M PISSED THAT I’M PAYING THAT MUCH FOR A TREE, SO I START RIGHT IN WITH THE “HIGHWAY ROBBERY” JOKES, THINKING MAYBE THEY’LL KNOW I’M ON TO THEM AND GIVE ME A BREAK. I’M NOT SURE IF THAT EVER WORKS, BUT ITS GOOD FOR A FEW LAUGHS AND MAKES IT EASIER WHEN I FORK OVER THE MONEY. NOW, YOU MUST BE THINKING, YOU CHEAP BASTARD! BUT ITS NOT THE MONEY, ITS JUST THE IDEA THAT I’M PAYING ALMOST $200 (WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD) FOR SOMETHING THAT’S GONNA BE DEAD IN 2 WEEKS, PLUS BREAK MY BACK GETTING IT IN THE HOUSE (I AIN’T PAYING FOR DELIVERY) AND THEN THE THING BETTER LOOK GOOD OR I’LL BE FURIOUS THE WHOLE CHRISTMAS SEASON LOOKING AT IT. (NOT AS MAD AS MY WIFE IS WHEN SHE IS STRINGING THE POPCORN AND CRANBERRIES- SHE LOVES HOW IT LOOKS, HATES DOING IT). BUT ALL THESE GUYS AT THE TREE LOTS SEEM PRETTY HONEST. I BELIEVE THEM WHEN THEY GIVE YA THE WHOLE SCHPIEL. AND I KNOW THEY WORK HARD FOR THAT DOUGH… STANDING IN THE COLD ALL NIGHT, LUGGIN’ TREES ON THEIR BACK, STANDING THEM UP FOR YOU SO YOU CAN SEE IT BETTER, LISTENING TO YOU TRYING TO TALK THEM DOWN IN PRICE. MAYBE I’M A LITTLE BIASED… MY DAD USED TO SELL CHRISTMAS TREES, WHEN HE WAS A LAID-OFF BRICKLAYER. HE’D COME HOME AFTER LONG NIGHTS WITH THE MONEY FROZEN IN HIS HAND- MY MOTHER WOULD HAVE TO PRY HIS HAND OPEN. AND THEN HE’D FALL ASLEEP IN THE TUB, HE WAS SO TIRED. HE DID WHAT HE HAD TO DO WITH 6, 7, 8 KIDS. WHAT A SCHMUCK I AM TO WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING AT ALL. THE QUESTION TO HIM IS ALWAYS, “WOW, HOW DID YA DO IT WITH 9 KIDS?” AND HIS ANSWER IS AND ALWAYS WAS, “FAITH.” MAY YOUR TREE BE GREEN. MAY YOUR ASS BE WARM. MAY YOUR FAITH BE STRONG. A SAFE, PEACEFUL AND VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS, FROM MY FAMILY TO YOURS. -jm

FAN FRENZY By Inside Track

Christmas came early for dozens of starryeyed New Kids on the Block fans, who were gifted with some face time with Donnie Wahlberg and Jordan Knight on the Charlestown set of Donnie’s TNT pilot “Bunker Hill.” Jordan, who visited his bud’s Main Street shoot the other day, snapped photos with giggling gals and signed a ton of autographs. As for Donnie, he gave the female fans props for driving across the Tobin Bridge three dozen times the other morning to watch him film! “You girls are freakin’ crazy! But it’s a good kind of crazy,” the Dorchester homey yelled to his fans. Yesterday, the cameras were due to move to the Lynn Item, which is doubling as a police station for the show. TV STARS, CREW TAKE OVER ITEM NEWSROOM TO FILM TNT'S 'BUNKER HILL' PILOT SHOW By Robin Kaminski / The Daily Item

Production designer Tracy Gallacher said The Item stood out amongst a number of architecturally suitable buildings fit for a Hollywood set.

In a Hollywood minute, or over the course of about 12 hours, The Daily Item was transformed into a Boston Police Department Thursday for the set of the new TNT drama "Bunker Hill" starring Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan.

"We were looking for an older, more grungy type of building, and we heard that Lynn was a very film-friendly city," she said. "So we sent a few scouts here and found a lot of great stuff in Lynn." Throughout the newsroom, maps and photos of Lynn have been replaced with maps of Charlestown, and mug shots now line the walls where Item accolades hung for decades.

A hubbub of activity has swirled around The Item Building since Wednesday morning complete with celebrities, set directors, cameramen, stand-ins and a slew of other people as the newsroom and other rooms were altered to look like a police department set in the Charlestown section of Boston. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the pilot is centered on Wahlberg's character, Mike Moriarty, a Boston cop whose brother was shot in the line of duty. Wahlberg's character reportedly comes back to Boston after serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan, one year after his brother was killed, to take his place on the force as a cop in Charlestown. Associate producer Mark Hankey said one of the scenes filmed Thursday would be of Wahlberg's character meeting homicide detectives for the first time, and the other would be in the midst of an investigation. Actress Jennifer Ferrin, who is playing the part of a district attorney, and Tony Curran will also be in the scenes. Thursday's grueling 12-hour filming focused on Wahlberg's character searching through a police database and building a case against the main suspect for his first case. Hesitant to divulge the exact details of the show, Hankey said the pilot is loosely based on the story of Charles Stuart, the Boston man who murdered his pregnant wife and inflamed racial tension by blaming a non-existent black suspect in 1989. "There is a woman that is murdered on a bridge," he said. "But that's all I can say, I can't give it all away!"

"All of the crew members had a lot of fun taking the fake mug shots," Gallacher quipped. The vintage Item building did prove a brief liability during the 6 p.m. hour as the extra electrical burden of the filmmakers' equipment set off two separate fire alarms in the second-floor newsroom, halting filming. The cast and crew, as well as Item staffers, were forced out on to the street. The Lynn fire department responded and electrical alterations by the film crew soon had the production back up and running. Peter Berkrot, a stand-in for the pilot, who has appeared in Brotherhood, Caddyshack, and numerous other television and radio shows, said the shift at The Item has been far more luxurious than last week's icy cold filming on the Tobin Bridge. "You have to be on set at all times and in earshot if they need you," he whispered in between takes. "On Sunday I worked from 8 a.m. to sundown and the wind was whipping. But you know, I had the hand warmers and the toe warmers."Strikingly similar in appearance to Al Pacino, Berkrot said he has been in the business for over 30 years and worked with countless celebrities. "Stand-ins can make $150 for eight hours, but more often that that, we're here longer than that," he said. "When you're a stand-in, you have to be able to jump right in and then get out of the way really fast." Prior to filming at The Item, Gallacher said the crew shot scenes around Charlestown, including Pleasant Street and 40 steps, an area where Moynahan's character is supposed to live.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK'S SECOND COMING THE success of venerable Manband Take That continues unabated, and even a monumentally annoying Christmas advert featuring them cavorting with Twiggy can’t halt record sales.

monkey suit on, they know it’s you.

It’s perhaps understandable then why New Kids On The Block should crave a slice of the pie, lest we forget that Nigel Martin Smith shamelessly created the Manchester five-piece as a British version of the US boyband.

Did that make the usual teenage rites of passage – everything from drink to consequence-free promiscuity – tricky in the public glare?

In 2008, where every band containing a vowel in its name (bad luck for those awaiting the V reunion) has reunited, the motto is less: ‘Every dog has its day’ and more ‘Every dog gets buried in a Pet Semetary, ready for its festering corpse to rise up and bark until the end of time’. It’s been 14 years since the world’s biggest boyband split, replaced by younger models such as Backstreet Boys and N*Sync, yet having sold 80 million records, racked up more number ones than a urinal, and had their faces transplanted onto every conceivable piece of merchandise, was there a fear of desecrating their legacy? That their faces may no longer match the ones on their 1992 Official New Kids On The Block lunchbox? "There was definitely fears of how would we be perceived," agrees Jordan Knight, speaking to CityLife before performing a gig in Mexico. "But I felt as long as were fit, as long as we were in shape, as long as we did music that we connected with and it felt sincere, that’s all that we could do. "To me, it feels really the same. I guess when I look back at old videos; it’s different because the fans were really young. There’s braces everywhere. But it’s the same energy."

"I don’t know how they do that, but they can spot you. They can sniff you out."

"You know, we had fun and we acted our age and we did all the fun things that young guys will do," he insists. "For sure. Never went too crazy with it, but we had fun. We didn’t miss out of anything." As their star ascended, constant touring began to take its toll. "Well, there was a point where if you tour too long, it starts getting a little monotonous and boring," he explains. Treadmill "Like if you tour too much and stop doing new music, it gets really meaningless and you feel like you’re on a treadmill." "The thing that probably made us feel the most like a product was the merchandise. "We were on the road a lot and our manager was singing off anything and everything that had our faces on it. And it was overkill. "And we did get upset about that. But by the time we had a chance to pull on the reigns; it was too late because our fame was tapering off."

Even so, it’s possibly the most unexpected '90s comeback since the recession. The band were conceived by svengali-like producer Maurice Starr, who had caused waves with R&B teen quintet New Edition, and sought to find a white counterpart to them. In 1984, he met 15-year-old Donnie Wahlberg who helped him recruit the others: including younger brother Mark (before he exited to be reborn as Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch), best friend Danny Wood, falsetto-favouring schoolfriend Jordan Knight, and his brother Jonathan. Starting so young, did Knight ever feel he lost any of his childhood? "It was just really exciting," he says. "I mean, there was a lot of things we weren’t ready for, as far as paparazzi, as far as our critics, as far as the negative feedback we were experiencing. But there was a lot of thrills. "Especially as there was five of us, we got to share it with each other and go through it together. So it was a blast in a lot of ways." Fulcrum At the fulcrum of their success, after hits like Hangin’ Tough and Step By Step, they couldn’t go out without being besieged by hordes of hysterical fans. "We’d have to ask the mall in the local town to stay open half an hour late so we could run in and grab a few things, because we didn’t want to cause a scene," remembers Knight. "At the start, you try disguises, but the fans don’t fall for them. They see some weirdo coming down the street with big hair and a moustache; or wearing a

In 1994, they changed their name to the anacronym-tastic NKOTB, which tanked, precipitating the split. And the ensuring teenagers’ tears could have probably averted a hosepipe ban. The Surreal Life Afterwards, Knight released a series of solo albums, as well as appearing on VH1’s The Surreal Life (alongside Brigitte Nielsen and Flavor Flav) and Five TV’s self-explanatory Trust Me....I’m A Holiday Rep (with er, Syd Little and Jodie Marsh). "I heard some of the other guys say it was hard to settle down after touring and the craziness of being in the public eye and the constant stimulation of that. But for me, it was relief," admits Knight. "I like my privacy. I like to be in calm situations." With a new album entitled The Block, the increasingly-less-New Kids have roped in the modern R&B A-list: Akon, Timbaland, the Pussycat Dolls and NeYo. It’s interesting that in an age where the boyband is an anachronism (discounting ersatz-indie such as Busted and McFly, there hasn’t been a successful pure boyband launched in the UK since Blue), people are more inclined to accept married men with children singing songs with titles such as Sexify My Love (really!), rather than a gym-honed 20-year-old with his top off. "I do think we’re a bunch of good looking chaps, I’ll tell you that much," he disclaims. "Though we have to work a lot harder at it these days."

nkotbthing.com USA THE BOSTON GLOBE 12.25.2008 www.boston.com

NEW KID SISTER Contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, Spike TV has not yet picked up the pilot for "War of '04." But the show, which is loosely based on Whitey Bulger's Boston mob saga, does sound promising. "I can't speak highly enough of the experience," says actress Judy McIntyre, who played the mom to Matthew Marsden's crooked character. "I mean, Sheila Jaffe cast it, so you know it's got some great people." (Jaffe's credits include "The Sopranos" and "Entourage.") The oldest sister of New Kid Joey McIntyre, Judy told us she also auditioned for a role in "Bunker Hill," the TNT pilot starring New Kid Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan. "But I just didn't have connections, I guess," she joked. A veteran actress, McIntyre's resume includes stage work, soap operas - "Ryan's Hope," and "Guiding Light" with Kevin Bacon - and a big screen turn with Tom Cruise in "Far and Away." "I was in my 40s and thinking, 'If Sally Field's having a hard time getting a job, what's the deal going to be,"' said McIntyre. "That's when I came back to Boston." If Spike TV likes the pilot, it'll order a season's worth of shows. Said McIntyre: "I told my hair stylist, Mitch Maher, that if I get to become the Edie Falco of Boston, you're coming with me."

BACK ON THE BLOCK Is Donnie Wahlberg's role on "Bunker Hill" getting in the way of his responsibilities with the reunited New Kids on the Block? "I'm having a really great time acting, and it's led to some questions about whether we're going to make it back on the road," Wahlberg says on a video posted at NKOTB.com. "I really hate to break the news to you guys this way. Maybe I could have had a press conference to break the news in a more sensitive way, but this is just the way it's got to go down. After much deliberation and support from my friends and colleagues and much heartfelt soul searching. . ." Ever the actor, Wahlberg then pauses for dramatic effect. "In 2009," he finally shouts, "we'll be coming back for more face time!" A gaggle of giggling women then pull Wahlberg to the floor.

FAMILY TIME We're starting to think Mark Wahlberg is a big softie. The Dorchester star was spotted taking his family to see Santa in LA this week, and in every picture he's got one of his three kids in his arms. Fiancee Rhea Durham, by the way, was sporting some sizable bling on the finger that matters most.

THE 10 BIGGEST EVENTS 0F 2008 1. Brangelina’s twins are born We didn’t think anything could top Shiloh’s birth two years ago. But the most glamorous power couple in the world giving us a $14 million two-for-one deal on celebrity babies? The tabloids couldn’t have dreamed up a more perfect story. (Which probably explains why they keep trying to insist it’s happening again.) 2. Britney’s VMAs comeback Of all the recent signs that the pop princess was back to her old self, her appearance at September’s Video Music Awards was the most poignant. OK, so she didn’t perform — but she symbolically came full circle after her disastrous, career-threatening spectacle at last year’s ceremony. 3. Lindsay’s Cannes kiss We kind of had a feeling that Samantha Ronson was someone special to LiLo — after all, they went everywhere together. But seeing them sneak a romantic smooch on a yacht in May was all the unofficial confirmation we needed that they’re a couple. Afterward, their relationship seemed to blossom in the public eye. 4. Beyoncé and Jay-Z marry News of the supposedly top-secret NYC nuptials of Shaun Carter and Sasha Fierce quickly broke in April. And after their long courtship, it was about time Jay stepped up and put a ring on it! 5. ‘The Dark Knight’ is no joke Despite the beyond-frenzied hype over Heath Ledger’s final performance, the film didn’t disappoint. Though it was bittersweet seeing the great talent we lost earlier in the year, it was great watching him come back to life, however briefly, onscreen. 6. Clay Aiken comes out After years of him sidestepping speculation, we were super-happy for the "American Idol" alum to finally accept himself for who he is — and get tons of support from fans. 7. Tina Fey’s return to ‘SNL’ The role of then-veep hopeful Sarah Palin was one that Tina was born to play, and she exceeded expectations. The "30 Rock" star’s uncanny impression actually became a talking point in the presidential campaign. 8. Anne Hathaway dumps her man The fan consensus on Anne’s shady beau Raffaelo Follieri was, "What does she see in him?" We were all relieved when she got smart and ended things — days before the FBI busted him for financial scamming. 9. Ellen and Portia wed During the brief period when same-sex marriage was legal in California, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi took each other as brides. The ceremony was a touching celebration of love and equal rights — which made it all the more heartbreaking when those rights were later taken away. 10. The NKOTB reunion Before Miley Cyrus was a twinkle in Billy Ray’s eye, we had the original tween idols, the New Kids on the Block. With underage Disney stars dominating pop culture, their re-emergence was a welcome dose of nostalgia. And 5 we could have lived without 1. ‘Twilight’ We get it. "Twilight" is hot. We really didn’t need to hear Robert Pattinson’s endless string of anecdotes about fans asking him to bite them. 2. John Mayer The singer’s impromptu paparazzi conference announcing he had dumped Jennifer Aniston, not the other way around? Tacky. 3. Jessica Simpson Just like his ex — announcing to anyone who would listen that she loves new beau Tony Romo madly. 4. Nick Hogan The TV personality’s release from jail was hard to celebrate, considering friend and car-crash companion John will never leave the hospital. 5. Britney Spears The pop star’s driving-without-a-license mistrial was a waste of taxpayer dollars — and an unwelcome reminder of her bad old days. 5 priceless celeb quotes 1. "I’m like, I’m a smart person. What the hell was I thinking?" — Britney Spears 2. "I always felt this crazy connection to God." — Heidi Montag on her faith 3. "We got tribal on it, we danced to it!" — Matthew McConaughey on his son’s birth 4. "What Angelina did was really uncool." — Jennifer Aniston to Vogue 5. "I’m, like, totally ready to lead." — Paris Hilton, spoofing John McCain’s campaign ad

Ellos son 'New kids on the block'.

JOEY MCINTYRE WALKING THROUGH AN AIRPORT - STEP BY STEP Aw man that was corny. But I had to title this post with a New Kids on the Block song. I felt it was my duty as a lifelong fan! :)

yesterday afternoon. Looks like these two opted for a Maclaren stroller.

Joey McIntyre prepared to depart from LAX International Airport with his wife Barrett Williams and their son Griffin Thomas McIntyre

I am pretty sure this is the first time we've seen Griffin - and what a cutie he is!! Wonder if he is going to have chops like his dad?

Joe cantó stay the same con partes en español.
