Whether it’s the makers distinctive style, the character of the piece, the inspiration behind its origins, there’s always more to tell than meets the eye.

INTRODUCTION

Our Story It started with a journey… and a journal 10 years ago we set out on a life-changing adventure, travelling the world and coming across talented craftspeople and their beautiful work along the way.

It inspired us to do something different, so we moved to rural Devon and started working with artisans throughout the world, supporting and celebrating their skills by bringing their products to a wider audience.

Our name was borrowed from a hut in Zambia, our business plan jotted on the cover of a paperback and our first order was for exquisite leather journals that we still sell today. Our team and products may have grown, but we still have the same hands-on approach, meeting and working with all our makers personally. That’s how we know that every product has a story to tell….

The relationship between an artisan and a beautiful handmade piece creates a story and makes each product not a mass market item, but an individually crafted piece.

Café

It was over two years ago that we first stumbled across a beautiful courtyard of stone barns, located just outside Totnes. The buildings were originally dedicated to farming and cattle and had been derelict for several years. Despite the exposure to the elements and neglect there was a certain magic to the space. Our first taste of the site was enough to inspire us and as we stood surrounded by decaying timber, rubble and a fair amount of cow muck we saw our first store coming to life.

A LAID-BACK SETTING FOR GREAT COFFEE AND FOOD Our café is located within the store in a calm and atmospheric space, styled with Nkuku products and reclaimed materials. The café serves the finest artisan, wood roasted coffee; served by an experienced barista each blend has been personally curated ensuring a delicious flavour. We have taken care to source local suppliers providing fresh produce and our menu provides delicious choice from deli boards to wood fired pizzas.

The stone buildings are laid out in a horseshoe shape with a courtyard within, this area is south facing and even on cold days if the sun is shining it is a lovely sheltered spot. We were keen to keep as many of the original features and stay true to the original building. In keeping with our Nkuku principles we wanted to restore rather than re build. This set about a number of research projects, searching for reclaimed materials and other suitable resources.

There was also a fine balance to be found between look and practicalities. Maintaining these important details really make the building what it is today.

Our beautiful Mali pottery is handmade in southern India as part of a fair trade project offering training and secure employment to artisans from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scheme focuses particularly on empowering women in the workplace.

We were captivated by the traditional skills used to create this wonderful collection.

The process of making the Mali pottery is long and consists of various stages. The kiln is what really made us stop and think, it is hand built from bricks and heated by fire wood bought from local farmers. Once you hear the story behind these pieces, it makes that morning cup of coffee or tea in a Mali mug all the more special.

Food for Thought A DELICIOUS COLLABORATION

Fundamental Sourdough - The most sustainable bread in the world To celebrate fair trade fortnight this year we curated our perfect fair trade breakfast. We combined our own fair trade products with the skill and knowledge of chef and food writer Vanessa Kimbell.

Vanessa is a frequent contributor to BBC 4’s Food Programme and leading expert on the Sourdough section of the World Bread Awards. Her recent cookery book ‘Food for Thought’ blends her own delicious recipes with a real passion for fair trade and sustainable ingredients.

Equipment Recommended 1.5kg banneton baking dome Grignette, for slashing the dough

For the Sourdough 650 g water at exactly 28 centigrade 200g levain *, refreshed using equal parts flour to water and mixed 8 hours before you are ready to bake.

1kg stoneground organic white flour, plus extra for dusting 20g fine sea salt Organic polenta flour, for dusting Makes 1 x 1.85 kg loaf *Levain is made by taking 20g starter and adding 90ml cold water and 90g strong white organic flour. Leave covered with a sample cloth on the counter for 6 – 8 hours, you will see that it is bubbly and ready to use.

Mix (at about 6pm) In a large bowl, whisk the water and levain together. Add the flour, salt (combined well) and mix until all the flour has made contact with the water and there is no more dry flour.

Do not knead

1st Ferment Cover the bowl with a clean damp cloth and leave the dough to rest in a cool environment for 30 minutes.

This is called autolyse.

Fold (6.30pm) Lift and fold the dough over on itself. Do a quarter turn of your bowl and repeat three more times. Over the next hour lift and fold your dough again twice.

Shape (7.30pm) Shape the dough lightly and place into a dusted banneton. Dust with white flour and cover with a damp tea towel. Leave to prove in the fridge for 8 hours.

Bake (8am) The following morning preheat the oven to 220 centigrade/ 200 centigrade fan/ gas 7 for at least 30 minutes before you are ready to bake with your baking dome in the oven. The baking dome must be very hot. Take the dome out of the oven and sprinkle a little polenta flour over the bottom. Put the dough into the dome and slash the top of the brad using a grignette (or lame), then place the lid back on top and return to the oven as quickly as possible. Bake for 45 minutes then reduce the oven heat to 190 degrees centigrade 170 fan / gas 5 and bake for a further minutes. Finally remove the lid and bake for another 10 minutes.

For a really authentic loaf bake until you have a dark brown crust.

Once the bread is completely cool store wrapped in a piece of cotton or linen bread bag or tea towel. If you don’t like crunchy crust then wrap the bread in a tea towel while it is still warm.

To accompany your delicious bread – we recommend a generous helping of homemade blackcurrant jam.

Vietnamese potters have been using these age old processes for thousands of years. Their rich culture of influences include indigenous and Chinese methods.

We use sustainable mango wood to create pieces that not only stand the test of time, but make the most of a beautiful waste material.

The Mango trees are initially grown for their fruit but once they have stopped producing they can be cut down and used to create wood products, this allows farmers to plant more trees and provides them with a supplementary income.

From Devon to Asia, we have travelled far and wide interviewing over one hundred of the craftspeople behind our collections; discovering their personalities and aspirations. Ram is a graduate in mathematics. He is married with three children. Ram lives in Jaipur but is originally from a village just outside the city. As well as pottery Ram is interested in Mogul art designs and typical Rajasthani culture paintings on large canvases.

Poonkubi is from sourthern Indian, she has two school aged children. Poonkubi loves cooking which she learned from her mother. She enjoys experimenting with dishes and coming up with new creations. Poonkubi also loves skipping and listening to southern Indian songs.

Harlal is an expert leather craftsman.

He works as part of a co-operative in Rajasthan. He and his wife work side by side. Harlal is sixty years old and after thirty eight years, he is confident that he is a master of his trade.

Anil is happily married with four children. Anil likes to read in his spare time and is interested in the works of the academic author Ved Prakash on plant and animal science. He is also a cricket fan, he enjoys playing and is an avid supporter of the Indian team.

Mohamed, is from the state of Bihar, he is married with three children. His favourite place in India is the Ajmer Sharif Dargah. When Mohamed returns home from work he likes to play the board game ‘Carrom’ with his family.

Tasha is married with a four year old boy, she lives in Jodhpur with her family in a rented house, which is located close to work so Tasha and her husband can walk there together each day. Her favourite place in the world is the village where she grew up.

Gyarsi is married with five children, her oldest child is now twenty seven years old. She works with ceramics and her role is to finish each product, making sure each one is perfect. Gyarsi enjoys listening to traditional Bajan religious songs in Hindi.

Sunil is single and lives in Billari. He has a very close family and lots of relatives who he tries to spend as much time with as possible, as he believes family is important. Sunil has worked with wood for nearly 3 years and enjoys the process of seeing a product evolve.

Jagdish is from Jodhpur and he lives there with his family. He has recently got engaged and plans to marry soon.

Jagdish cycles to work every day. He is a big fan of Bollywood romantic films. His favourite Bollywood actor is Akshay Kumar.

Cotton Paper TREE-FREE: RECYCLED RAGS AND ANCIENT SKILLS

Our photograph albums and journals are filled with beautiful handmade paper, created from pieces of recycled cotton rag.

This ancient paper making skill has been passed on through generations. Cotton paper has the additional benefit of being tree free as no wood pulp is used.

A BEAUTIFUL P L AC E TO K E E P T R AV E L S TO R I E S Our journals and albums will always be an important part of our collections; they were the first product we ever sold and symbolise so much about Nkuku. The range includes beautiful leather journals with wrap around leather ties. Our rustic journals are handmade from leather by a cooperative of 40 families using traditional methods. The leather is dyed using natural tree bark and vegetable extract.

Meet the Artisan – Shagihad, a Master Stitcher Shagihad Khan is from Khava Rani Ji in Rajasthan. He is married and has just had a baby boy. Shagihad enjoys watching and playing cricket. His favourite player is Sachin Tendulkar. Shagihad loves old Hindi songs and his favourite singer is Lata Mangeshkar. He also likes watching television, particularly the movie channels.

Shagihad has been a ‘stitcher’ for four years.

One of the products Shagihad is responsible for stitching is the braided hemp and this is his favourite product. He would also like to create a new jute bag design.

“I enjoy working here because my colleagues have a good nature and it is a good working environment.”

Savannah and Rustic Leather A STORY OF INDIVIDUAL CRAFTSMANSHIP

Using age old techniques, each piece is the handiwork of one artisan from start to finish, working as part of a co-operative of families providing fair employment and equal opportunity.

Meet the Artisan – Harlal, a Leather Craftsman Harlal is an expert leather craftsman. He works as part of a co-operative in Rajasthan. He and his wife work side by side. Harlal is sixty years old and after thirty eight years, he is confident that he is a master of his trade.

Harlal loves to listen to Rajasthani religious songs and his favourite film is ‘Bai Chalisa Sasriya’. Harlal supports to the Indian cricket team but says he is too old for sport himself. He also enjoys watching ‘Kabaddi’, traditional Indian wrestling. Nevertheless, his main hobby is spending time with relatives and friends at home. Harlal’s favourite place in India is Nasik, located on the banks of the holy Godavari River. He likes it there because ‘there are so many temples’. He would also very much like to visit Canada.

“I enjoy working here because I can make very good quality goods. I learnt my skills at the Indian Institute of Management. I like to earn money making something that I find enjoyable. My favourite product is the Savannah leather bag. I would like to design and make a new bag with my wife”

His role is to make our bespoke furniture collections. Angus came from a fine arts and sculpture background, and he started making furniture once he left college. He worked with various other carpenters and furniture makers and gleaned a lot of knowledge before started working on his own designs.

Angus started making things from wood to fulfil a practical need to make furniture for his own house and enjoyed creating things so much it then became a way of making a living.

Christmas Garlands A NATURAL YULETIDE CELEBRATION

A true symbol of Christmas has to be a beautiful wreath or garland adorning your front door. Wreaths have been placed on doors for centuries, their significance to offer love and long life to all those who cross the threshold. We have created a step by step guide on how to create your own stunning garland as well as some easy but no less stunning Christmas decoration ideas.

To make your garland you will need:

To start cover your copper wire ring with moss, wrapping the florists wire over and around the moss to make sure the base is secure. Then gradually add branches of silver birch styling as you go. Next add some bracken leaves and position as you wish. We have deliberately chosen an asymmetric design which fits the wildness of our foraged materials.

Another festive styling idea...

Our garland is made from a combination of beautifully textured foliage, all foraged from hedgerows. We have used a variety of types of conifer, silver birch, larch cones covered with lichen and some beautiful, textured old man’s beard. A splash of white is added with a few pieces of white heather.

Our zinc hanging stars make a pretty decoration just as they are but to add some natural festive beauty simple add a wisp of old man’s beard, mistletoe and bracken and fix with florists wire to the loop at the top of the star. (We would recommend using an artificial tealight candle near foliage). Hang them on your front door or above a window.

As you layer piece after piece of foliage your garland should start to take shape. As a final addition we have attached some Itari vintage baubles. Their pretty warm tones enhance the rich rusty colours of the foliage.
