Eachyearweofferapproximately60places toexternalcandidatesat11+,tojoinaround45 studentsmovingupfromourJunior School.Weattractalltypesofpersonality,and thereisnotypicalNorthLondoner.Aneducation atNLCSisbroadreaching,flexibleandexciting. Ourstudentslearnaboutmuchmorethanthe curriculum,withacademicenrichmentandextracurricularactivitiestakingasignificantproportion oftimeattheSchool.Studentsaresupportedbya strongpastoralteamandtheydeveloparelaxed self-confidenceandindependenceofthought; theydisplayaloveoflearningthatleadsthemto takeonchallengesthroughouttheirlives, tomakethemostofopportunitiesandtomakea differenceintheworld.

Theexamwillconsistofwrittenpapersin EnglishandMaths.Youcanfindexamplesof thesepapersonourwebsite
TheexamsareheldattheSchoolandareset independentlybyourHeadsofDepartment. Theyarenotpartofanyconsortiumtests.On theexamday,allprospectivestudentswillbe metbymembersofourAdmissionsteamand madetofeelasrelaxedaspossible.The studentswillsittheexamsinsmallgroupsin ourclassrooms.Weʼllofferallcandidates snacksanddrinksbutifyouprefertosend yourchildwithherownhealthysnack,thatʼs fine.

FollowingtheEntranceExam,anumberof studentswillbeinvitedbacktoSchoolforan interview,thatwilltakeplaceinJanuary. Interviewsareconductedbyexperienced membersofstaffandprovideanopportunity forustogettoknoweachstudentalittle betterandprovidethemwiththechanceto askanyquestions.Duringtheinterviewthere willbefurtherMathsandEnglishtesting,in theformofverbalquestions.

Tosecureyourchild'splaceyoumust confirmyouracceptanceinwritingandmake thedepositpaymentofhalfaterm'sfees. Theacceptancetermsandconditionswillbe senttoyouwiththeofferofaplace.

Sinceitsfoundationin1850,NorthLondon CollegiateSchoolhasprovidedfinancial supporttostudentswhoweknowwill thriveatNLCSbutwhosefamiliescannot affordthefees.Weofferthisintheformof bursariestostudentsjoiningtheSenior Schoolat11+or16+.

Bursariesexisttoensurethatchildrenwho wouldbenefitfromattendingNLCSarenot preventedfromdoingsobecauseofthecosts.A bursarycanbebetween10%offees,alltheway upto100%offeespluslunches,50%offfares forcoachusers,uniformsubsidyforYears7,9 and10, mandatorycurriculumequipment, examfeesandcompulsorytrips,dependingon yourfinancialsituation.
Wejudgeeachapplicationcarefully, consideringtheincomeandassetsofthe family.Bursaryassessmentiscarriedout independently,includingahomevisitbyathird party.
Bursariescanbeawardedonaslidingscaletogirls whosehouseholdincomeisbelow£86,000.
Applicantswithhouseholdincomein excessof£86,000areunlikelytobe grantedanaward.Awardswillonlybe availabletostudentswhentheSchool issatisfiedthefee-payingparent(s) areresidentintheUKfortax purposes.
› MUSICSCHOLARSHIPS
Anumberofmusicscholarshipsareawardedat11+ (for5years)and16+.
TheNLCSHandelMusicScholarshipisanannualaward equivalenttothecostofindividualmusiclessonsatNLCSinup totwoinstruments(worth£1,680in2022-2023). WeencourageourMusicScholarstostudyanadditional disciplinealongsidetheirmaininstrumenttofurther theirmusicianship.MusicScholarslearningjustone instrumentwillbeofferedafinancialawardequivalenttothe costoflessonsinoneinstrument(£840in2022-2023 alongsidefreelessonsatSchoolinanadditional discipline(£840).
TheNLCSHandelMusicScholarshipalso entitlesstudentstoanadditional£115 instrumentstudied,awardedannually, toassisttowardsthecostofsheetmusic andinstrumentmaintenance.
Onceyouhaveregisteredyourchildforthe 11+entranceexam,pleasealsocompletethe application form for a Handel Music Scholarship wewillalsorequireacopyofthelatestmusicexammark sheet(s)andareferencefromtheteacheroftheirfirst instrument.Pleasesendthesetothe11+Admissions Officerby15November2023.

CandidatesshouldbeatthestandardequivalenttoABRSMGrade5 distinctionoraboveontheirfirstinstrument.However,applicationsare welcomefromstudentsperformingonthefollowinginstrumentsatalower grade:doublebass,oboe,bassoon,anybrassinstrument.
