Welcome
from the Headmistress W
elcome to the latest edition of Canons Life, on the theme of our Summer Festival ‘Spirit of Adventure’. During the last two weeks of term, we encouraged the School community to try something new, to be adventurous, and we have all embraced this challenge wholeheartedly! I do hope you enjoy reading about some of the wonderful activities that your daughters have been taking part in. We have continued our vital mental health and wellbeing work this term, with a series of PSHE lectures and mental health talks including visits from the Spargo-Mabbs drugs charity, ‘The Nutrition Guru’ and even a Scottish reeling session (ceilidh), and I know the girls have found these practical and thought-provoking. As I reflect on the whirlwind of events and activities in the past few weeks, such
as end of exam celebrations, dramatic productions and concerts, a nail-biting sports day, and a joyful Valedictory, I am reminded once again that the founding principles of this remarkable school run so deeply amongst all members of this special community including current pupils, parents, staff and ONLs. I am incredibly proud of the tenacity, creativity, scholarship and altruism of the girls and I hope you enjoy reading about the vibrancy of School life in Canons Life. Thank you for your continued support. I wish you all a very happy and restful summer break. Sarah Clark, Headmistress

News & Events STEPHEN HAWKING INTERMENT AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY Four girls from Year 12 were amongst 500 people who attended the Stephen Hawking memorial service at Westminster Abbey. As part of the one hour service, they heard a reading from one of his daughters on the inspirational nature of his legacy and how he single handily changed the future of science and physics.
NLCS QUESTION TIME
This term we hosted our first NLCS ‘Question Time’ event with proceeds from ticket sales going to the Bursary
Fund. Thank you to our panellists which included current parents, Jo Johnson MP, Lord David Pannick QC, and Rajesh
SYMPHONIE POÉTIQUE – FRENCH POETRY RECITAL Year 9 students from King Alfred School, Merchant Taylors’ School, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, UCS, Berkhamsted School, and North London girls took part in the first Symphonie Poétique – a French poetry recitation competition. Students had to learn three poems on the theme of ‘voyage’ and then recite one of them. Those who went through to the final were given fifteen minutes to prepare Une Carte Postale by F. P Titinga unaided which is no mean feat at that age. The jury was most impressed by the high calibre of the performances, and Aria Banerjee Watts from NLCS was the worthy winner!

Agrawal, Deputy Mayor of London for Business. We were also delighted to welcome back Old North Londoners, Camilla Turner, Education Editor for The Telegraph and Juliet Mann, Broadcast journalist. Our final panellist was NLCS student Zara Khan – Zara is currently in Year 12 studying Economics, History, Spanish, and Maths. It was a brilliant evening with questions submitted by the audience in advance with topics ranging from the lack of female CEOs to the future of Britain’s high streets. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this scintillating evening and in particular Zara who most certainly held her own amongst such a distinguished group of speakers.

CYBERFIRST VISIT TO BUCKINGHAM PALACE Four girls in Year 8 visited Buckingham Palace for afternoon tea with the Duke of York to celebrate their success at the National Cyber Security Centre’s CyberFirst competition. Team Goggles (the team-name appeared “before their eyes” in a chemistry lesson!) qualified for the national final which was held in March, making it into the top 10 in the country after competing against 1200 other teams in an intense online round. Congratulations to Imaan, Sakina, Alexandra and Masha, we hope you enjoyed your afternoon at the Palace.
POSITIVE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING SPEAKERS
This term, our Senior Societies programme delivered PSHE talks from a variety of guest speakers. Kevin Braddock, founder of The Torchlight System Project, a publication and support guide which highlights the importance of asking for help, discussed the relationship between the media and mental health. He discussed the unrealistic pressures
that the media places on society and gave guidance and support on how to manage these positively. We were delighted to welcome back Fiona Spargo-Mabbs, Director of the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation (DSM Foundation). Fiona and her husband Tim founded the drugs education charity in memory of their 16 year old son Daniel
who died after taking ecstasy (MDMA) in 2014. The aim of the charity is to support young people to make safe choices about drugs. She spoke firstly to our Year 9 girls, and also ran an evening drug and alcohol awareness session for parents. It was a very informative day, and her story and the practical advice moved both parents and students. Other speakers this term have included nutritionist Tina Lond-Caulk aka ‘The Nutrition Guru’, who explored Health, Nutrition and Wellbeing, and Deana Puccio from The RAP Project, who delivered a very frank talk about personal safety, sexual assault and consent, as well as examining how information online and social media are influencing attitudes, behaviours and expectations.
PARTNERSHIPS DAYS This term, NLCS girls have taken part in a number of partnerships days with boys and girls from local schools. Year 9 were joined at Canons by students from The London Academy and the Sacred Heart Language College for a Philosophy workshop. The question under scrutiny was “Is it reasonable to believe in life after death?’ In preparation for presentations and a short debate, the 23 students acquired new skills in both evaluating philosophical argument and in reaching independent conclusions. We welcomed students from Heathland School, for a fun and lively afternoon of debating. The event was designed to improve the students’ confidence and enable them to work collaboratively on a shared initiative whilst honing their argumentative skills. The whole of Year 10 took part in a cross-curricular symposium with students from QE Boys. Students discussed and
YEAR 10 SYMPOSIUM
gave presentations on a variety of subject areas. The topics included ‘Managing the movement of people’ (Geography); ‘the Body in landscape’ (Art), ‘Esperanto’ (MFL), ‘Octopus-inspired adhesive’ (Science), and the Music group had an energetic masterclass in conducting. Earlier in the term, eleven Year 12 Economists visited Harrow School for a competitive ‘Balloon Debate’. The teams battled it out to establish who the most influential Economists of all time are. The girls put forward clear, hard-hitting arguments ensuring the Harrow Boys had to work hard to put their case forward. It was a fantastic event with impressive

performances; however, Team NLCS was judged the overall winner due to the quality of their arguments and rebuttals!

News & Events VALEDICTORY DAY
It is the time of year that we say farewell and good luck to our Year 13 leavers, who now embark on their next adventure. We were delighted to welcome girls and their families for our Valedictory celebration. It was a wonderful afternoon, sharing stories about their time at NLCS and saying goodbye to their classmates and teachers.
PARENTS’ GUILD ‘FAMILY FESTIVAL’ The sun was shining as girls, staff, family and friends descended on Canons for the spectacular Parents’ Guild ‘Family Festival’. It was an amazing afternoon, with activities including fairground rides, inflatables, dancing, yoga, an animal show, live band, and an international food court. The judging of the Canons’ Cake-Off also took place, with two sections - one for children and one for adults, congratulations to the winning entries. We would like to extend our thanks to the Parents’ Guild for creating such a fabulous event.

House & Charity CHARITY On Tuesday 26th June, the Year 12 choir, Bella Voce, enjoyed their final performance of the year at the Henry NiHill care home. Following on from the choir’s success at the Royal Free Hospital earlier in their year, where they raised nearly £200, they created a lovely atmosphere in the care home through renditions of classic songs such as Hallelujah and Dream a Little Dream of Me. It was a truly magical afternoon with many of the residents joining in the singing. Over thirty girls volunteered at this summer’s Livability Party, which we have been holding annually at Canons for many years now. Our Founder’s Day prayer “Thou dost require much from those to whom much is given” is a huge part of our ethos and we teach girls to give back to society. NLCS girls regularly volunteer their time after school at local care homes as part of our Community Service programme, and guests from six local care homes were invited to visit Canons for our annual summer get together. Girls chatted to guests, served coffees and cakes, and some even had the chance to be bingo callers which was great fun; a lovely time was had by all. Before the party began, we were
DAVID BIGGS
delighted to hear from David Biggs, a resident at Brookside House, the local Livability care home. He spoke to the Sixth Form girls, teachers and guests about his life and journey with cerebral palsy. This talk was organised by Coral Harding and Ishani Shah in Year 12 and was very special to David as it had been a dream of his to address some students
SPORTS DAY AND HOUSE FÊTE This year the Canonaid House Fête and Sports Day were combined to create an end of term extravaganza. Five school sports records were broken including the 1200 metres and hurdles. Girls from each House set up different stalls including inflatable sumo wrestling, a bungee run and hair braiding, to raise money for PLAN International. It was the perfect way to end another wonderful school year.

about his condition for many years. His words were emotional and thoughtprovoking for the girls and they all loved looking at his photos and asking him questions. David is adamant that although he faces daily struggles no one should feel sorry for him as he loves life and enjoys himself to the full. He told us about his hobbies including horse riding. David was an engaging speaker. He is an astounding man who is always laughing and smiling and inspires us all.

Summer Festival The grounds provided the perfect setting for Year 7’s outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and in the drama studio, a group of Year 12 students performed a studentwritten play entitled Carte Blanche and a cast of Year 11 students rehearsed and performed ‘A Play in Day’. Anthropology Society held a foodthemed event where students could try different foods from all over the world, and the Politics and History Societies
gave a joint presentation on ‘Adventurers Through Time’, looking at figures from the past who have shown the spirit of adventure. On the final days of the Festival, girls took to the courts for the annual Pamela Flower Tennis Tournament and the whole school came together for the biggest House event of the year ‘Sports Day’, which this year also included the Canonaid House Fête.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
Julius Caesar A cast of sixteen Year 10 students performed Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Julius Caesar. For this modern production, the Black Studio was transformed into an office within Caesar’s increasingly autocratic government. The action was also transposed to the strained atmosphere of the Cold War era politics. This mirrored the tension in Shakespeare’s writing nicely, with Caesar working to oust the moles within his government as the conspirator’s against him played dangerous power games. The
The Festival drew to a dramatic close with the ‘NLCS… With Spirit’ show featuring a variety of acts – dancing, singing, instrumental pieces, dramatic monologues and more – and giving insight into a number of different cultures from around the world. Everyone was treated to an array of fantastic performances from students across the Senior School. It was a tremendous way to bring the Festival to a close and a spectacular way to end the Summer term!
immersive nature of this promenade performance meant that the audience found themselves standing with the assassins as they killed Caesar, in the crowd of Romans at his funeral and on the frontline with the conspirators as the play moved towards the tragic conclusion. The talented young actors made light work of the difficult Shakespearean text and presented a range of wonderfully detailed performances. Their performances, combined with top-notch lighting, projection and sound design combined to make a fantastically atmospheric production.

Junior School News T
his has been another jam-packed Summer term the Junior School. Girls have been busy reading poetry, taking part in sporting activities, dressing up as Romans and even organising a charity Spa Day! To mark International Dance Day in April, Lower School girls took part in workshops led by Senior School dancers. Year 3, who have been learning Spanish, enjoyed a Latin class and Year 4’s drew upon tribal influences lining with their work on the rainforests. Year 5 practised some Bollywood moves, whilst Year 6 moved gracefully in a Ballet taster class. All the girls also had the chance to learn a contemporary dance routine; it
was wonderful to see over 50 girls taking part. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous Street Party for the Royal Wedding. The day began with a ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ quiz run by Mrs Powell, resplendent in her wedding outfit. Then throughout the day many different activities took place including icing royal cakes and making fascinators to wear at the party. In the afternoon everyone was entertained by a variety of wedding marches and music, as they sat at a long line of brightly decorated tables enjoying cucumber sandwiches, strawberries, and cream and jam scones. The party was finished off with a resounding chorus of God Save the Queen.

LAST DAY OF TERM - HISTORICAL DRESS UP
In May, our Year 5 girls joined forces with Year 5 from our neighbouring school, Aylward, for an Arts Partnership Day – ‘Perseus in Performance’. The children collaborated brilliantly in a variety of different workshops, including Drama, Music, Writing, Art and Dance, all based around the Greek myth of Perseus. At the end of the day, we all came together in the PAC, for the children to showcase what they had learned. It was hugely impressive to see what they had achieved in one funpacked day. As they come to the end of their time in the Junior School, Year 6 enjoyed an action-packed week in France at Maison
Claire Fontaine. Each day was full of new experiences, from archery and baking to mosaic-making and drama. The girls were given plenty of opportunities to practice their French, including a visit to a local market to buy food. It was fantastic to see the improvement in the girls’ French by the end of the week. The First School girls were filled with a sense of awe and wonder at our stunning grounds during an engaging and exciting Mixer Day. All of the Junior School learning friends were around to help girls collaborate and be persistent during team building games, be original in the Andy Goldsworthy-inspired nature art, and be curious and focused searching for minibeasts on the bug hunt! Special thanks go to the First School’s friend Ted Casey, who enthusiastically shared his fantastic knowledge of the School’s flora and fauna! Even up to the last weeks of term, girls were bust performing and entertaining parents, staff and students in the Year 6 production of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase and the Lower School Concert ‘Here Comes Summer’ Congratulations to all the girls and staff; you all definitely deserve a restful Summer break! The last day of term was dedicated to Mrs Powell’s love of history, as we wished her all the best for her forthcoming retirement after 22 years under the spell of NLCS. Staff and girls dressed as a historical character, and picnicked on pear and chocolate crumble, Mrs Powell’s favourite.

‘Our Town’
Performing Arts
Probably the finest play ever written by an American
- 14 -
A cast of seventy girls from Years 7 & 8 delighted audiences with a mature and sensitive performance of American playwright Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. This iconic play follows the everyday lives of the Webb and Gibbs families as they see their children fall in love, marry and live out their lives. This play, hailed as “probably the finest play ever written by an American” is about appreciating the simple things in life. It is set in a fictional American town in 1901, but in truth, it could be anytime, anywhere. Dealing with such important and moving themes it was astonishing to think this was such a young cast. Congratulations to all for such rich and truthful performances.

Congratulations to all girls involved, for an outstanding production ‘Carte Blanche’ In the final eight weeks of the term, a group of Year 12 students put together a student-led play. Written by pupil MariaSigrid Remme, the play tells the story of Lisa Blanche, who, after the death of her grandfather, is left with the task of carrying out one of his final wishes: to find out what happened to his brother Pierre Delacroix. At the same time, seventy years earlier in the trenches of France, Jamie MaCloy,

a sniper who has returned to his post, befriends a French soldier, named Pierre Delacroix. This friendship does not only shine a new light upon the horrors of the war, but shapes Jamie and the decisions he makes afterwards. Set in both 1917 and 1980, the play follows both groups of characters and the challenges that they face. Congratulations to all girls involved, for an outstanding production.

WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE
The ONLA Women in the Workplace event took place on 26 June. Over the years, we have held many industry-specific events, and many common themes have emerged. Women of all ages and stages in their career share the same pressures and have similar aspirations and ideas of what it should be like to be a working woman in the 21st Century. The evening addressed all these issues and was attended by over eighty ONLs across a range of industry sectors including Engineering, Finance, Civil Service, Medicine and Law.
