EMIL & THE DETECTIVES If Mrs Tischbein had known the amazing adventures her Emil would have in Berlin, she’d never have agreed to the trip! Emil’s life is changed forever on the journey from the monotony of a small hometown to the bustling city of Berlin. When Emil’s money is stolen on the train by a mysterious stranger it seems that everything is lost. However as Emil starts tracking down the thief, it soon emerges that there are many others in the big city who wish to help and that the crime is the start of a wonderful adventure. A talented cast of Year 8 and 9 students will transform the PAC into 1920’s Berlin: a place full of music, surprises and danger, where Emil will come to realise that growing up is the most exciting adventure of all. THE SENIOR SCHOOL PLAY 13, 14 and 16 March 2019 at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre

SISTER ACT Sister Act the musical is based on the 1992 film of the same name. First performed in Pasadena, California in 2006, it opened at the London Palladium in 2009. Described by critic Charles Spencer as “a truly engaging musical comedy, with a terrific score by Alan Menken strongly influenced by disco and gospel movie soundtracks” it traces the story of aspiring singer Deloris Van Cartier when she is forced to take refuge in a nunnery after witnessing a murder. After several years of trying we have now been able to secure the rights to perform this vibrant and highly entertaining show which will offer a wonderful contrast to our hugely successful West Side Story. Anticipate a huge demand for tickets as students from Years 10-12 bring this show to life.

THE YEARS 7 & 8 PRODUCTION 19 and 20 June 2019 at 7pm in the Performing Arts Centre

THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO The Adventures of Pinocchio first appeared in 1883 by Italian writer, Carlo Collodi. This enchanting tale follows the adventures of Pinocchio, a mischievous puppet (carved by the woodcutter Geppetto) who dreams of becoming a real boy. This classic story will be brought to life by a large cast of Year 7 and 8 students using influences from the traditional Italian style of Commedia Dell’Arte. With physical theatre, puppetry and a good dose of comedy, Pinocchio is sure to entertain audiences of all ages. THE YEAR 10 SUMMER PRODUCTION & YEAR 12 STUDENT DIRECTED PLAY: 26 and 27 June 2019 at 7.30pm in the Drama Studio

THE HOUSE OF BERNARDA ALBA A group of Year 10 students tackle this modern adaptation of Lorca’s famous play. Following the gangland execution of her husband, the formidable matriarch Bernarda Alba will do anything to safeguard her family’s dubious fortune and the 4

future of her five daughters. A deal is struck - a marriage of convenience between her eldest girl and the son of a rival gang leader. All Bernarda has to do is ensure that the wedding happens, and quickly. Faithfully preserving Lorca’s sense of boiling tension and impending tragedy, this adaptation brings a classic text thrillingly up to date. YEAR 12 STUDENT DIRECTED PLAY The opportunity to direct a play of their choosing will be offered to Year 12 students. Previous productions have included a range of quality texts and have demonstrated the ability of our students to bring complex and challenging work to life. THE YEAR 11 PRODUCTION: 30 June 2019 at 5pm in the Drama Studio

SEND: Mirroring the rehearsal routines of Shakespeare’s actors, students from Year 11 will have only one full rehearsal to prepare this new play written by Deborah Gibbs, Director of Drama. This comedy explores what happens when technology goes wrong and a group of people become rather careless about the messages they send from their mobile phones.

VISUAL ARTS THE FANTASY FASHION SHOW- IDENTITY The Art Society’s Annual Extravaganza in aid of the Karenni Charity 28 January 2019 at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre Arts Society is delighted to invite you to its annual Charity Show in which students from Years 7 to 13 design, construct and model wearable art, this year in response to the theme of Identity. The catwalk show is a spectacular event accompanied by a charity auction of items of haute couture donated by big names of the fashion world and there will also be a sale of second hand fashion items and Karenni crafts.

This exciting event continues to raise money each year for the KSDP, a charity set up in memory of ONL, Stephanie Lee, and which works with the Karenni people, providing basic needs and education for the smallest and poorest of the ethnic states in Burma. Around 23,000 Karenni people are confined to camps in Mae Hong Son province, some of whom have lived in these camps for 20 years, including children who have never seen the outside world. The refugees are not allowed to work so rely on support from humanitarian organisations. The Karenni charity will be represented at our Fashion Show, with a stall selling items made by the people of Vietnam.

FORTHCOMING EXHIBITIONS:The year ahead promises to be rich with an array of exhibitions by artists around the school: In October, we look forward to an exhibition in the Performing Arts Centre by our recent artist-inresidence, Emmy Lopes, an ‘eco-artist’ who uses recycled materials to create beautiful illustrations depicting legends and fantasies, including a dramatic retelling of the Chandos story. This will be followed, in the Spring and Summer terms, by two further exhibitions by artists working with students here at school in the new academic year.

PRE-U, IB & GCSE ART EXHIBITIONS The Summer Term will bring the annual private views of work by our GCSE, Pre-U and IB students, which will take place on one evening as part of the school’s annual Arts Festival and during Valedictory week. Our students bring an extraordinary and wonderfully rich array of skills in a broad range of media and processes, including paint, print, sculpture, ceramic, fashion, 3D design, photography and digital arts. The private views are always a fantastic event and a great opportunity to meet and talk to the artist themselves, and we very much hope to see you there.
