ANNUAL FUND 2016 –2017

At North London we believe that education changes lives. We use our budget wisely to ensure that our pupils benefit to the full from what we offer. A pupil’s experience at North London Collegiate School combines three key elements: the provision of an exceptional education which encourages scholarship and a love of subject; the importance placed on pastoral care so that no girl is without support in her time at the School; and an environment that truly allows the whole personality to grow. We are an ambitious school and want to ensure we are able to provide the ‘extras’ that make a North London education so transformational. The Annual Fund is a way of enabling parents, former parents and alumnae to play their part in assisting further development of North London Collegiate School by concentrating on small but significant projects. The projects selected are diverse in nature and support a range of teaching and learning ventures and extra-curricular activities with benefits for

our students across the School, from four to eighteen. Through the Annual Fund we wish to create a ‘community of giving’ to help the School year by year. In the past, Old North Londoners and parents have contributed generously towards the facilities pupils enjoy today. We are continuing this tradition by launching our Annual Fund for 2016-2017 to all those connected with the School. With the Annual Fund, you have the option to give to a project which resonates with you, knowing that your gift, no matter what the size, will benefit current pupils, as well as those in the future, providing extra resources both in and beyond the classroom. If you decide to make a donation you will be enriching the lives and development of North London pupils, and helping us to give them the widest possible range of opportunities during their time at North London Collegiate School. We would, on behalf of the pupils and staff, greatly value any contributions you feel able to make to the Annual Fund.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Due to an increase of students wishing to play the piano we would like to purchase three extra upright pianos for the Music Department. Pianos are not cheap, unfortunately, but do last a long time and will be used by generations of North Londoners. The costs to purchase the pianos and necessary accoutrements are: 1. 2.

Upright Piano: £3,000 to £,6,000 each (3 required) Piano Stool: £600 each (3 required)

3.

LEGO LEGO is used within our Junior School to engage students in Computer Science, Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and energise learning through real-life problem solving. The LEGO MINDSTORMS series of kits contain software and hardware to create customisable, programmable robots. They include an intelligent brick computer that controls the system, a set of modular sensors and motors, and LEGO parts from the TECHNIC line to create the mechanical systems. The cost of this project is: ®

CREATIVE EXPRESSION Integral to a good education is involvement in the creative arts, which develops the student’s creative expression, a skill which will guide her throughout her life in whatever career or pathway she may choose. All pupils at every year-level are able to participate in drama, either onstage or backstage. At the heart of drama and music at North London is the Performing Arts Centre, a 350-seat theatre with a flexible orchestra

TABLET TEACHING Tablets and the iPad are transforming the way we teach and learn. Powerful creative tools, interactive textbooks on every subject and a universe of apps and content make for endless learning possibilities. The costs of providing iPads for the Geography, Maths, Art and Economics Departments and a Microsoft Surface Pro for the Junior School are: 7. 8.

Microsoft Surface Pro: £960 Apple iPad: £400 each (36 required)

8.

INTERACTIVE GEOGRAPHY An augmented reality interactive sandbox is a fun and engaging way to learn how the world works. The sandbox combines an actual sandbox with a 3D camera, a digital projector and a computer to display a topographic map that adjusts as sand is moved around inside the box. When users hold their hands over the sandbox, it becomes a cloud and virtual water flows from it into the sandbox. Students can simulate topography by creating physical features in the sand which

is then augmented in real time by an elevation colour map, topographic contour lines, and simulated water. The system will enhance the teaching of basic geographic, geologic, and hydrologic concepts like reading and understanding topographic maps, contour lines, watersheds, catchment areas and levees. The cost of purchasing an interactive sandbox for the Geography Department is: 9.

AR Sandbox: £1,000

10.

SPORT AND GAMES With its extensive playing fields and array of sports facilities sporting life flourishes at North London. At every level of ability, students can participate in a wide range of sports, including netball, lacrosse, swimming, cross country, badminton, gymnastics, dance, athletics and tennis. With many ‘away’ fixtures in the busy sporting calendar our PE Department would

like to share the girls’ experiences with you and therefore require new photographic equipment. We would also like to provide a branded gazebo for the girls to shelter and store their equipment under during inclement weather. The costs of this project are: 10. Camera: £1,200 11.

Gazebo: £479

12.

MUSICAL CREATIVITY All styles of music thrive at North London Collegiate School, from classical to rock and from chamber ensembles to large orchestras; and girls are encouraged to participate in as many musical activities as possible. All levels are accommodated in the various orchestras, numerous choirs and jazz and rock bands and many girls have instrumental lessons with our talented peripatetic teachers. To further broaden the range of musical opportunities we would like to provide tuition for an extra Chamber Music Ensemble and

various masterclass sessions. The costs for these projects are: 12. Singing, Strings, Woodwind,

Brass or Piano Masterclass: Half-Day, £200; Full-Day, £500 13. Chamber Music Tuition Masterclass:  Half-Day, £200; Full-Day, £500 14. Extra Chamber Music Ensemble to be coached for one year: £500 (20 rehearsals)

MAKING YOUR GIFT AS FLEXIBLE AS POSSIBLE You may choose to allocate your gift to ‘wherever the School needs it most’. This will give the Headmistress and Governors maximum flexibility to apply funds to where they feel the need is greatest. Also, in the event that all the other projects in this brochure become fully funded, excess funds will be reallocated to where they are most needed.

GIVING AND RECEIVING Lucy Wray is an Old North Londoner who now plays Lacrosse for Wales and has played at two World Cups. She has supported the School in gratitude for her time at North London. She is the Honorary Secretary of the Old North Londoner Association.

I had a fantastic time at North London and enjoyed every day of it. It gave me a great start in life and I felt it would be nice to be able to give something back and ensure that others have the same opportunity as I did.’

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED What is an Annual Fund? It is a request for support that will be sent annually to everyone in the School community. What you give is not important; a donation of any amount is appreciated. Many small gifts will add up to making a big difference to our pupils. Don’t school fees pay for all this? Actually no, they don’t. We are fundraising for the ‘special extras’, and the School does not have an endowment. Projects which need funding may change year on year, depending on current needs. Many vital resources that pupils enjoy today were only made possible thanks to the generosity of Old North Londoners, staff and parents in the past. How do I know the School will use my gift appropriately? We will report back to you and all donors on how much we raised, and how we spent the funds.

North London Collegiate School welcomes gifts of all kinds, whether one-off, multi-year, bequests, gifts in shares, or donations via the British School & Universities Foundation (for US taxpayers). We would be delighted to talk to prospective supporters about how the School can direct and credit a gift. VIRGIN MONEY GIVING If you would like to support our Annual Fund you can now donate online via our Virgin Money Giving page (uk.virginmoneygiving.com/ charities/nlcs). Both one-off gifts and regular donations can be made via this route and Gift Aid can also be reclaimed on any donations made online by UK tax payers.

REGULAR GIFTS Regular gifts can be made monthly, quarterly or annually for as long a period as you wish. By making a donation in this way you provide the School with a regular income that enables us to plan ahead and use your donation more efficiently. The easiest and most efficient way to give regularly is by Direct Debit. SINGLE GIFTS Single gifts can be made by credit or debit card, cheque or the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). Cheques should be made payable to North London Collegiate School.

PAYROLL GIVING Under the Give as you Earn Scheme, you can authorise your employer to deduct your charitable donation from your payroll before calculating Pay as You Earn tax and then forward your donation to the School. MATCHED GIFTS Many companies run matching gift programmes which can double or even triple your charitable contributions at no expense to yourself. Check with your Human Resources office to see if your company does this and then contact us and we will be happy to help you complete the paperwork.

*Higher rate tax payers can claim extra tax relief by including donations on their next Self-Assessment Tax Return form.

SHARES AND PROPERTY If you choose to donate shares or property to the School, you can save up to 40% capital gains tax and deduct the full value of the shares or property from your income for tax purposes. CHARITIES AID FOUNDATION CAF account holders may give to the School via cheque or card.

In 2015, the School reclaimed over £50,000 in Gift Aid. Please help us to make this figure even bigger. If every charity supporter were to give their donations tax-effectively, charities could claim an estimated additional £900 million from the HM Revenue & Customs each year. Providing you are a UK taxpayer, you could boost your charitable donations just by giving in a tax-efficient way. We appreciate that tax has its complexities and
