Nicole Volavka (ONL, 1997)
Please include:
“Canons Follies Twelve Days of Christmas. I was the partridge in the pear tree. Dressed in brown I’d come on stage for each verse and when we all sang “and a partridge in a pear tree” I’d reply, “that’s me!”

“Junior School Christmas party, when we took party frocks in, and they hung up all round the classroom all day… Many pink frillies as you’d imagine in the 1960s, but I was smugly proud of the black velvet shift dress my Mum had made me.”
Hannah Minghella is a film producer who worked on Lou, a Netflix movie. This movie is about a young girl who is kidnapped and whose mother teams up with the mysterious woman next door to pursue the kidnapper. A journey that tests their limits and exposes shocking secrets from their pasts.
- What industry you work in
“The Christmas hat competition in Junior School.”
-Jane Schofield (ONL, 1975)
Another one to add to your watchlist. (Available to stream on Netflix)
- What you studied at university (if applicable.)
_Claudia Saunders Goodman (ONL,1993)
Series 2 of The Pact offered a brand-new storyline and cast, and I wanted to take the show to darker, more gothic visual style. It is psychological thriller about a social worker who has four adult children, one of whom died recently. One day, the doppelgänger of her dead son turns up, and this tight-knit family is blown up as a secrets are revealed and a murderous pact is formed.

Comedian Sophie Duker is currently on a U.K. tour with dates up to end of April 2023. Her ‘HAG’ tour is in full swing, starting back in August 2022. She has received some great feedback with one viewer quoting “A riotously funny journey of self-discovery”.

It was such an adventure to film on the Welsh coast, which offered incredible cliffs, beaches, and ruins. We took over the main Pier Café in Penarth and re-decorated it to suit our jewel colour palette, which was fun. We had a fabulous cast crew, which helped on the long cold night shoots! I particularly loved collaborating with the Spanish Cinematographer Sergio Delgado, who had previously worked (as a Focus Puller) on Pan’s Labyrinth, one of my all-time favourite films.
“The Scotland ONLs inaugural event was held at the Royal Botanic Gardens on Sunday 3rd July 2022. We had eight attendees in total. The weather was kind to us and we had a lovely walk around the gardens, followed by tea and scones at the café. There was lots of chatter reminiscing about our days at school, which spanned form 1952-1983!”

“During my time at NLCS, I was the C Chairperson of the Psychology Society, got involved with several volunteering opportunities with young people such as travelling to Flying Angels School n Zambia, reading with pupils in the First School or assisting teachers at Northway School disabilities. All combined prepared me extremely in Birmingham and later added to my combined experience of working with young people, giving me the foundation to complete in Educational and Child Psycholog in July 2022 as Dr Noureen Lakhani, with my thesis focusing o teachers’ views on working with children who have experienced trauma. I always hold a great deal of gratitude for my teachers and friends at NLCS that enabled and empowered me to this point in my education and career today.”

Transforming Lives with Bernice McCabe Bursary Fund
Sue Minter, an ONL from the Class of 1967, recently recounted her experience at North London Collegiate School.
Despite keeping her bursary confidential, Sue's mother was determined to provide her with the same opportunities as other girls.
“I cherished my time at NLCS, from the beauty of the school grounds to the activities in the Drawing School. The bursary opened doors for me, leading to achievements such as attending Girton College, Oxbridge achieving a 2:1 in history, and even receiving a Fulbright scholarship to study for a year at The University of California, Berkeley.”
Congratulations to Natasha Blackbrun-Friesinger on becoming a Veterinary Surgeon.
"There are 3 exams, small animal, equine and farm & public health. Each one has to be passed in order to qualify. That now makes me a member of the Royal college of veterinary surgeons with a bachelors degree in veterinary science (BVSc MRCVS). Along with passing exams, over the 5 year course we have to complete 12 weeks of pre-clinical placement and 13 weeks of clinical (although most of us do more, think I did about 28 weeks of clinical placement). This is where a lot of our practical knowledge is gained. The placement where I was filmed for landward have actually offered me a job so in mid-august, me and my husband will be relocating to the Highlands near Dingwall, where I will be a rural mixed vet (I.e. we treat anything & everything from rabbits to cattle and horses)."
Natasha also featured in an episode of Landward while part taking in work placement. Click the link below for the episode.

The rain stayed away just long enough for us to enjoy our Sports Day this year!
Huge congratulations to all the students who took part, competed and cheered along their peers, it was a wonderful morning showing NLCS spirit at its very best!
Gibbons house were the overall winners this year following a fantastic performance!
We welcomed current and former Junior School staff to the unveiling of a portrait of Jo Newman (ONL 1976) in the Junior School Library.
Jo joined the Senior School as a student in 1970. In 1989, Jo returned to NLCS as a teacher and in 1996 was appointed the Deputy Head of the First School. After a short break from NLCS in 2000, she came back to Canons in 2003 when she became Head of the Junior School, a post she held until retiring in July 2022.
The portrait marks Jo’s long-standing connection and commitment to NLCS as a student, parent and teacher and now hangs in a place very dear to Jo’s heart, the Junior School Library.
Summer Term at NLCS:
We enjoyed a fantastic afternoon for our Valedictory Ceremony, a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our Year 13 students, and welcome the now class of 2023 to the ONL community.
We wish you all the very best for your future endeavours and will miss you all!
We are delighted to announce another most impressive set of International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma results. The 2023 results, published on 6th July, show our students achieving an average Diploma score of 41.3 points (before re-marks).
The school has again achieved an average score in excess of 40 points, comfortably within the top range of marks available, and the range of institutions at which students have secured offers includes Yale in the US and Oxford and Cambridge in the UK.
The national and international picture will become clearer over the coming weeks, but we are confident that these results will underscore North London Collegiate’s status as one of the very highest-achieving IB schools worldwide.
These results are testament to the success of the talent, hard work and commitment of the students and staff. Congratulations to our students on their achievements.
If you want your news published in the next termly newsletter, please email onla@nlcs.org.uk or message us on social media. The next newsletter will be published in July.
