Therehasneverbeenabettertimetoconsiderboardingforyourchild.Ourhighlytrainedandskilled boardingstaffwillsupportyourchildthroughtheirtimewithusatNLCS.Withaccesstoallofourfacilities andadditionalacademicsupportthereiseveryreasontosuggestthatboardingstudentshaveanadvantage. ItismypleasuretowelcomeyoutotheNLCSJejuboardingcommunityandthankyoufortakingthat all-importantfirststeptowardsbecomingtheamazingyoungmenandwomenthatyoucouldbe.Wearea boardingschoolandweareproudthatourstudentscometoseeusasa“homeawayfromhome”whilst goingthroughsomereallyimportanttransitionsintheirlives.Manyboardingstudentsenjoytheunique benefitsofthislearningenvironmentandtheythrivewithinourstructuresandroutines Thisleadstomany usefullife-skills,includingindependence,self-confidence,resilience,teamworkskills,andmutualrespect. BoardersalsogettoliveinanengagingEnglishlanguageenvironment,withotheryoungpeople,whobond andendupcultivatingfriendshipsforlife.Forstudentswhoboardwithus,transitioningintouniversitylifeis anaturalstep,andtheyexcelwiththeimprovedorganisationalskills,theenhancedemotionalintelligence, andtheself-disciplinethatarealldevelopedunderourcare.

Boarderswhotrynewexperiencesandpushtheirownpersonalboundariesmakethemostprogressduring theirtimewithus.Therearefantasticfacilitiesavailableforyoutokeepahealthylifestyle,regularandfree accesstofacultystafftoimprovetheiracademicattainment,andcaringexperiencedpastoralstaffthereto help.Livinginboardingwillprovidechallengesforyoubutalsosupportthismeansthereisalotofpotential forthedevelopmentofʻsoskillsʼ.Boarderslearntobeassertive,knowrightfromwrong,listenand compromise.Theremightwellbebriefmomentsofarguingaboutsomethingaspettyasthetemperatureon theACcontrolswitharoommate;thesemomentsdevelopyoursocialskillsandgiveyoubetterconflict managementtechniques.

NLCSJejunowenableschildrentostarttheirboardingdevelopmentaljourneyfromYear5andcontinueall thewaythroughtoYear13.YoungchildrenstarttheirjourneyintheSeniorHomes,andthenperfecttheir life-skillsinourSixthFormHomes Boardingisanextremelysupportiveandnurturingenvironmentwhich graduallydevelopstheirindependence,assertiveness,andinterpersonalskillssothatourstudentsleaveas confident,mature,andindependentlearnersreadytofacethechallengesoftheworld

EachBoardingHomehasanon-residentialMatronwhoisresponsibleforthebasichousekeepingofthe BoardingHomeandforensuringthequalityofourlaundryprovision,cleaning,andmaintenance Theyare amazinglywarmandwelcomingtoourboardingstudentsanddosomanysmallthingswhichhelptosupport ourmainaimofprovidingahomeawayfromhomeenvironment

5.5AcademicSupport

Studentsarelikelytobeintroducedtoanumberofothermembersoffacultystaffwhogivesomeoftheir timeintheeveningstoensuretheboardinghousesofferthebestboardingprovisionpossible.Weexpectour boarderstomakegreatacademicprogressandthefacultystaffmakeavaluablecontributiontotheboarding houseswithafocusondeliveringacademicchallenge,stimulationandsupportforourboarders.“Academic Support”isaverybroadtermandtheacademicneedsofourboardingstudentsarejustaswideanddiverse. Anacademicsupportdutycouldincludesupportforidentifiedstudentsandʻdrop-insʼforboardingstudents, orenrichmentandrevisionlecturestoalargergroupofboarders,forexample.TheAcademicSupport ProgrammeiscreatedwiththecollaborationoftheVP(Academic)andAVP(Boarding)sothatitcanbest meettheneedsofourstudentswithoutjeopardisingtheNLCSeducationalethos

6.1Whotocontact?

WewilltranslateanyemailwritteninKoreanorMandarinintoEnglish,sopleasedonothesitateabout contactingus.Pleaseunderstandthattherewillbeashortdelaywhilstyourmessageandourreplyis translated.Duringtermtime,ourstaffmembersshouldreplytoyouwithin24hours,andwedohave translationservicesavailable(KoreanorMandarintranslation)butthesetranslationservicesarenormally onlyavailableduringofficehours.Ifyouhavenotreceivedacknowledgementofyourmessagewithin24 hours(duringtheworkingweekandintermtime)pleasecontacttheSeniorSchoolOfficeorJuniorSchool officeandexplainthesituation.

6.3Whentocontact?

PleasemakeanyrequeststotakeyourchildoutofschoolduringtermtimeinadvancetotheTutorandHead ofHouseviatheParentPortalandatleastaweekinadvance.Wewouldencourageyoutoavoidrequestinga leaveofabsenceduringtermtimeasfaraspossible.Itisadvisedthatfamilyholidaysshouldbeorganised onlyduringschoolholidaytime.Theschoolwillgenerallyauthoriseabsenceforcertainsituations:

-Thestudentisrepresentingtheschoolinacompetition/event;

-Thestudentisrepresentingtheircountryinacompetition/event;

-Thestudentisrequiredforafamilygatheringofimportance,egfuneral;

-Thestudentrequiresmedicalattentionthatcannotwaituntilholidays;

-Thestudentisrequiredtoattendaninterview.

Ifboardingstudentswillnotbereturningattheusualtimeatthebeginningofatermorhalfterm,parents shouldcontacttheBM.

6.4PositiveRelationships

ItisimportanttorememberthateveryoneatNLCSJejuandallourparentswantthesamething;everyone wantsthechildrenunderourcaretobehappyandtogrowandmatureintothesuccessfulyoungadultsthat weknowtheycanbe.Wefeelthatwecangetthebestoutofyourchildrenifweworktogetherasateam,and thatcanonlyhappenifweallmakeanefforttomakesurepositiverapportsareinplaceandpositive relationshipsareinpractice.

7.TheBoardingRoutine

Ourboardersfollowregularroutineswhilstintheboardinghomesandwerecognisethattheycansometimes takeabitoftimetounderstandandbecomehabitual.Theroutinesaredesignedtoensurethatourstudents makethemostoftheirtimeatNLCSJejuandthatthereisahealthy,balancedlifestyleforallourboarders Noteveryoneagreeswithalloftheroutinesbuttheyareanicecompromise,mergingbothKorean,British, andInternationalculturesintosomethingthatmakesusproud

StudentsofSeniorSchoolageandaboveareencouragedtohavealarmclocksandtakeresponsibilityfor gettingthemselvesupanddressedeachmorning;matronsandboardingstaffcanandwillsupportthis.This isobviouslyanimportantlifeskill.However,entrenchingthislifeskillformanyteenagestudentswillneed ongoingsupervisionandguidancefromanadultteamandsoBMsandtheirteamstaketheoverriding responsibilityforthiseachday.

7.2Aernoon

JuniorBoarderswillleavetheirBoardingHomewithalltheyneedfortheday.Thisisbecausetheywillhave theirCCAsstraightaertheirlastlessonoftheday.Aertheiractivity,theywillbereceivedbythestaff memberonduty.Theywillusethetimebeforedinnergettingreadyfortheirhomeworktimeanddinner. Dinnerwillbecompulsoryforallourchildrenandtheywillbeaccompaniedbytheboardingstaff.Aer dinner,theywillhavesomefreetimetosocialiseundersupervisionbeforetheybegintheirhomework. HomeworkwillbesupervisedandassistedbyJuniorSchoolspecialistteacherstodriveforththescholarship ofourchildren

StudentsinYears7to11returntotheirBoardingHomesaertheiraernoonlessonsandcangetchanged beforetheirCCAifneeded.StudentsmustleavetheBoardingHomeingoodtimeiftheyaretobeattheir aernoonactivitiesontime BoardingstudentsreturntotheirBoardingHomesaerCCAswheretheyare welcomedbythestaffmemberonduty.Allstudentsshouldmakesurethattheyattendsupperinthedining hallbetween17:45and18:45.Thedutymembersofstaffattendsuppertogetherwiththeirboardingstudents andaninformalregisteristakenduringthistimetomonitorattendanceandensurehealthyeatinghabits.

7.3Evening

ForJuniorBoarders,theywillbeexpectedtobewithintheirhouseaerdinner.Thestaffaccompanyingthem todinnerwillensurethatthechildrenarereadyandsettledforprepat18:30andworkuntil20:30withan appropriatebreakinbetween.Theywillthenprepareforthenextdaybeforegoingtotheirroomsat21:00 andthenlightsoutwillbeat21:30

By19:00,atthelatest,allSeniorSchoolboardersshouldbebackintheBoardingHomeandtheevening routinestarted;onlybypriorarrangementcanexceptionstothisbemade.Eveningregistrationandhouse meetingtakeplaceat19:00andprepshouldbestartedbefore19:15.

Betweenprependingandlowlights(reading)time,itisimportantthattheboardersgetthemselvesreadyfor thefollowingday Uniformsneedtobeorganised,schoolbagsneedtobepacked,andweoenhaveto remindthemtocallhomeiftheyhavebeentooexcitedorbusytoremember.

7.4Weekends

Theweekendsareabusyandvibranttimefortheboardersandparentsmustbeawarethatthisisan extremelyimportantpartoftheBoardingHomeroutine.SaturdaymorningsareoenfilledwithBryant activitiesandtheboardersjoinwiththedaystudentsforthis.However,whilstthedaystudentsleaveschool aer12:00,theboardersareonlyjustgettingstartedwiththeirweekendroutine.EachBoardingHome designstheirweekendroutineinconjunctionwiththeirBoarderCommitteesandtheymustfulfilcertain minimumrequirementseachweekend:academicactivityortimetoworkindependently;timetoreadand relaxtogether;timeforasportingactivityorexercise;and,anactivitydesignedtobringtheboardersmore integratedandclosertogether

TheBoardingHomesmakegreatuseoftheexcellentfacilitiesonofferaroundtheschoolandtheyoentake theboardingstudentsontripsoutsidetheschoolandGEC.Itisimportanttonotethatallthesetripsare risk-assessedandappropriatelysupervisedbyourboardingstaff IfthereisaweekendwithoutaBryantthen theBoardingHomeshaveintroducedanumberofneweventsthatarenowinthecalendarforthenext academicyear.ThereareBoarders-Onlyevents,likeBoardersʼBryants,specialbrunchesorBBQs,and ScheduledExeatssporadicallyinterspersedthroughouttheyearsothatwegetthemostoutofthestudents underourcare.

Therearetwoworshipservicesavailableasitisimportanttomeetthespiritualneedsofourreligious boarders Thesefocusaroundanoff-siteCatholicserviceatSt Isadoreʼsoranon-sitePresbyterianservice whichareoptionalweeklyeventsavailabletoallourboarders.Theweekendroutineisnotaffectedbythese servicesandboarderscanchooseiftheywanttoattendwithoutitdetrimentallyimpactingtheirweekend schedules.

Ifaboarderrequiresmedicalattentionoutsideofclinichours,inthenighttime,forexample,itisreally importantthattheydonottakethemselvestotheMedicalCentrealoneandwithouttellingthedutymember ofstaff.Thereisalwaysadesignatedstaffmemberondutywhichcanbecontacted,evenduringthenight,in caseofemergenciesandtheymustbeinformedthatthereisaproblemsothattheycanassist.Boarderscan asktheirroommateorafriendtogetthedutymemberofstaffiftheyareunabletogetoutofbed.

IntheSeniorHouses,theBMgathersfeedbackonthestudentsintheirBoardingHomefromtheboarding staffandboardingstudents.AstudentisselectedandappointedtobecometheBoardingCaptainofeach BoardingHome;becomingtheHeadofHyeopjaeorHeadofAewol,forexample.Thesestudentsworkin collaborationwiththeboardingstafftorepresenttheviewsoftheirfellowboardersandareresponsiblefor formingstudent-ledBoardingCommitteesineachoftheBoardingHomes.

8.2HomeLeadershipTeams

IntheBoardingHomes,theBMmayappointotherseniormembersoftheboardingstudentstoassistwith supportingtheBoardingCaptain.ThiscollectionofseniorstudentsformtheHomeLeadershipTeamand theyalsoworkcloselywiththeBMandABMsineachBoardingHome.

TheBoarderCommitteeisacommitteeofstudents,twoboardersfromeachyeargroup,chairedbythe BoardingCaptainandundertheguidanceofanABM.TheBoarderCommitteechangesatleastonceduring thecourseofanacademicyearalthoughtheBoardingCaptainsremainasYear11representativesovertheir entiretermofoffice.

Itisafundamentalstrengthofboardingthattheolderandmoreseniorstudentshelpandassisttheyounger students.Itshouldhappenineveryboardinghousearoundtheworldandwearereallyproudofthelevelof positiveinteractionbetweenourstudentsintheSeniorSchoolBoardingHomesandthesixthformstudents inHallaEastandHallaNorth.Academicexcellenceamongstoursixthformstudentsisaprizedassetand theirachievementsatIGCSEshouldberecognisedandchampionedsothatyoungerboarderscanseethem astherolemodelsthattheyare.

AllBoardingHomeshavesecuredstudyareasthathavenetworkediMacswithfilteredinternetaccessand thereisaccesstoaprinter.ThereisWi-Fiaroundthehouseandsostudentsareabletousetheirownlaptop; however,thisisnotstrictlynecessaryfortheyoungerstudents.TheschoolprovidedWi-Fiisstoppedduring thenighttime(wheneveryoneshouldbeasleep)soweaskparentsfortheirsupportinensuringthattheir childdoesnothaveanunlimitedmobiledatasupplyorinternethotspot.

9.3ValuablesandMoney

Studentsarediscouragedfrombringingvaluablesintoschoolandtheschoolcannottakeresponsibilityfor anyoftheseitems Passportsanditemsofparticularvaluethatyouhavetobringtoschoolshouldbegivento theBMorABMforsafekeeping.TheseitemswillbekeptintheBMʼssafe.Anymoneythatyouwouldlikeyour childtohaveshouldbehandedintotheBMorABMatthebeginningofthetermandtakenfromthesafe whenrequired.Itmaybeadvisabletoopenabankaccountsothatsmallamountsofpocketmoneycanbe withdrawnfromtheATMmachines

NLCSJejuhasaBehaviorPolicy,whichensuresaconsistentapproachtoallmattersofdiscipline.Itis importanttonote,however,thatthedisciplinepolicyisnotprimarilyaboutruleenforcement,butameansof preventingpoorbehaviourandpromotinggoodrelationshipssothateveryonefeelshappy,safeandsecure Withthataiminmind,BoardingHomeshavetheirownrewardsystemstoencouragestudentstorespond positivelytoallthoseaspectsofcommunitylivingwhichservetocreateanorderlyandsafeenvironmentfor everyone.ExpectationsofappropriatebehaviouraremadeexplicitbytheBM,andstudentsaregiven appropriateguidanceandsupporttomeetthoseexpectations Wherestudentsdonotrespondpositively,the usualsanctionswouldbethewithdrawalofprivileges,dutiessuchastidyingupcommonareas,andlossof freetime.

Bullying

Theschooliscommittedtohavingzerotolerancetowardsanyformofbullyinganditisimportantthat boardingstudentsunderstandthis Thereisaspecificanti-bullyingPolicy(PC015)whichtheschoolfollows andstudentswhoengageinbullyingareswilyaddressed.

SmokingandAlcohol

NostudentmaysmokeontheSchoolsite,bringcigarettes,ore-cigarettes/vapingparaphernaliaontothe Schoolsite,smokeduringtheirjourneytoSchool,smokeonaSchooltrip,norsupplycigarettestoother pupils.StudentsshouldnotsmokeanywherewhilstwearingSchooluniformandastudentwhoisnot smokingbutwhoispresentwithanotherstudentwhoissmokingmayalsoreceiveanappropriatesanction.

Nostudentmaypurchasealcohol,bringalcoholontotheSchoolsite,supplyotherpupilswithalcoholnor arriveataSchoolfunctionhavingconsumedalcohol Theserulesapplytostudentsonanyschooltripand anyonefoundtobeinvolvedwithsmokingoralcoholcanexpecttoreceiveaserioussanction.

StudentsandparentsshouldbeawarethatalcoholbreathalysersareavailableontheschoolsiteandtheBMs canrequesttousethem Nicotine(cotinine)testingkitscouldberequestedbytheAVP(Boarding)ifa significantconcernhasbeenraisedregardingthepossibilityofsmoking.Repeatedfailuretofollowthese rulescanresultinastudentʼsplaceintheschoolbeingputinquestionandcanultimatelyresultinastudent beingremovedfromNLCSJeju.

11.1ArrivingtoBeginaTerm

ItisimportanttobeawarethatthetimingtoreturntotheBoardingHousesarepublishedinadvancesothat itcanbeensuredthehousesareappropriatelystaffedandroomsarereadytobeoccupied.Boardersare usuallyexpectedtoreturntoNLCSJejubetween15:00and18:00;however,thesetimingsareconfirmedby lettertoallboardingparentsbytheAssistantVice-Principal(Boarding)inadvanceoftheholiday.NLCSJeju willprovideschoolcoachesforboardingstudentswhentheyarriveatJejuAirportbetweenthehoursof14:00 -17:00.Coacheswillnotbeavailableoutsideofthesetimessoifyourchildʼsflightarrivesearlierthan13:30 andlaterthan16:30,theywillneedtomaketheirownwaytoschool AllstudentsneedtogotoareaB1inthe carparkwherecoacheswillleaveapproximatelyevery30minutes.Theywillberegisteredwhentheyboard thecoachandoncethestudenthasbeenregistered,theschoolʼsdutyofcarewillbegin

Theweekendscheduleisimportantforboardingstudentsasithelpstoensureintegrationandavoidsocial isolation.Inshort,itisverydifficulttobefriendswithsomeonewhoisnothereandsowevalueourboarders takingpartintheweekendactivities Thatbeingsaid,havingtimetovisitfamilythroughoutalongtermisan importantpartofhealthylifesowehaveintroduced“ScheduledExeats”tobeheldatcertainpointsacross theacademicyear AtNLCSJeju,anexeatisashortamountoftimethataboardercanspendwiththeir parents,family,oraguardianwhichisnormallyoveraweekend.Thereisatransferofcareandcontrolduring thattime,andtheboardersbecometheresponsibilityofthepersontakingthemoutonexeat,ratherthan beingunderschoolcontrol.Inanidealsituation,parentswouldonlytaketheirchildrenoutduringthe weekendsdesignatedasscheduledexeats;however,weunderstandthatcertainimportantfamilyeventsmay

falloutsideofthesetimes(weddings,birthdays,graduations,etc) Underthesecircumstances,studentsmay leavetheschoolsiteaertheirBryantactivitiesat12:30andtheyarerequiredtoreturnbeforesupperon Sundayat16:30.Requestsmustbesubmittedbyparentsatleastthreedaysinadvance,usingtheelectronic formontheParentPortal,andBMswillgrantpermissionassumingthestudenthashonouredall commitmentsandthatparentswilltakefullresponsibilityfortheirchildwhilstoff-site.

AllsuchrequestsarereferredtotherelevantBMandgrantedordeniedbasedontheperceivedbenefittothe studentʼspastoral,educationalorpersonalexperience IfthereisanydoubtthenBMswilldiscussthiswith therelevantAssistantVicePrincipal.Studentsleavingtheschoolsiteundersuchcircumstanceswillneeda LeavingSitePermissionSlipissuedbytheirBMandthiswillneedtobecheckedbysecurityatthegate.

11.5CanonsVillage,GEC,andWeekendPasses

OutsidethefrontofNLCSJeju,thereareagroupofshopsandrestaurantswhichtheboardersareallowedto accessatcertaintimesthroughouttheweek.Themajorityofthesetripsoutoftheschooloccurduringthe weekendalthoughweareconstantlyreviewingthepoliciessurroundingstudentfreedoms.

Olderstudentsareallowedtoleavetheschoolsiteona weekendtospendafewhoursintheGEC;however,thereisa procedureeachtimethishappensanditisimportanttonote thatparentalpermissionisrequiredinitially.Studentsmust requestpermissionfromtheirBMandsignoutoftheir BoardingHomewithprecisedetailsofwheretheyintendtogo andaclearindicationofthetimetheywillreturn.For non-sixthformStudentsthatareallowedtogoout,theywill needtobeingroupsofatleastthreetoamaximumofsix. StudentsintheSixthFormmayalsoapplyforaWeekendPass forSaturdayeveningorSundayaernooniftheyhaveprior parentalpermission.SixthFormstudentsmayrequesta maximumoftwoSaturdayeveningoffsitepassesatermanda non-negotiablecurfewof22:00isset.SixthFormstudentsmay alsorequestamaximumofthreeSundayaernoonoffsitepassesatermwithacurfewof19:00set If parentalpermissionhasbeensecured,studentswilldiscusstheirproposedeveningplanswiththeirBMand

presentanitinerarytoincludetimings,destination(s),modeoftransport,costs,aproposedsequenceofthe evening,andariskassessment.

TheBMswillhavethefinaldecisiononwhetheranindividualcangooutornot.AllSchoolrulesapplyoffsite aswellasonit.Ifanystudentisfoundtobeinbreachoftheschoolruleswhilstoff-siteortheirbehaviouris inappropriate,inadditiontotheassociatedsanction,theymayalsolosethisprivilegeforafullterm. HomesicknessandOtherIssues

Homesicknessisperfectlynaturalandisnotsomethingthatstudents,parentsoranyotherpartiesshouldbe embarrassedabout.Onthecontrary,earlyrecognitionandsubsequentdiscussionofanyissuesgreatly increasethechanceofapositiveoutcome Itisimportantthatparentsandboardingstaffworkwelltogether toensurethebestchanceofsuccess.BoardingHomeswilldothefollowing:

- Disregardforsiteaccessrulesandrequests

- Refusal,orexcessivedelay,inengagementandcommunicationwiththeschoolregardingissuesof concern

- Applyingpressureonstaffmemberstoalterreports,gradesoranyotherrecordsrelatedtohisorher child

- Recordingmeetingsortelephonecallswithoutthepriorconsentofthoseinvolved.

- Failuretodiscloseorshareinformationrequiredtoallowtheschooltosecurethewelfareofhisorher child,orthatofothers(eg.medicalinformation).

- Actionsthatbringtheschoolintodisrepute.

ItishopedthatparentscanappropriatelydirecttheirconcernsandcontributetoaharmoniousSchool communitythatreflectstheSchoolʼsGuidingPrinciples.TheconsequencesforbreachesofthisParentCode ofConductwillbedeterminedbythePrincipalandmayincludethefollowing:

- Theschoolmayasktheparenttoattendameetingtoaddressthebehaviourinquestion;
