As a Graduate Assistant, you will gain experience of working in an educational setting, whilst engaging in a bespoke training programme designed to support your professional development and enhance your employability. Living in a rent-free, en-suite studio flat within aBoardingHomeontheSchoolcampus, youwillsupporttheboardingstaffinthepastoralcareofagroupofboarders.Duringthe School day, youwillalsoworkwiththeacademicteaminyourassigneddepartment We have a wide range of opportunities for Graduate Assistants, including Sport, Art, Music, DramaandDanceaswellasEALandotheracademicdepartments.
The Graduate Programme has been incredibly successful at providing a professional pathway for those interested in becoming a teacher and for anyone interested in a potential career in Boarding Although there are no guarantees, several Graduate Assistants have successfully applied for full time teaching positions a erwards and are
nowflourishingwithinourteachingfaculty.Thereisalsoaneffectivepathwayforgaining residential experience and some former Graduate Assistants are currently Assistant Boarding Master/Mistresses working towards their goal of leading their own Boarding Home.

JobDescription
Much of your time will be spent working in a specific department, enabling you to immerse yourself in yourspecialistareaand,mostimportantly,workwithstudentsinan academic setting. However, there is a significant part of your workingtimededicatedto workingwithintheBoardingHomesandcontributingtotheBeyondtheCurriculumsideof the School. You will have free time every weekdaymorningandsomeevenings,butwill work in the a ernoons and at weekends. You also have one full day off per week. It is importanttonotethatallon-siteboardingstaff,includingGraduateAssistants,needtobe flexible whenitcomestoworkinghours.Awillingnesstohelpout,getstuckinandshow initiativeareessentialqualities.
Specific responsibilities mayvarydependingoneachindividualʼsskillsandinterests,but willinclude:
DepartmentalTime
You will be assigned to an academic department depending on your areaofspecialism. Departments coordinate this, lookingathowbesttoutiliseyourskillsetandensurethat the experience is rewarding. Tasks could range from administrative worktoactingasan AssistantTeacherinlessons,orcoachingandorganisingsportsorartsevents Theremay also be opportunities to support the work of non-academic areas such as Marketing, UniversityGuidance,InformationTechnologyandtheIndividualNeedsDepartment.
BoardingDutiesandPrepTime
YourdutiesintheBoardingHomewillfocusonhelpwithpreptime3eveningsaweekand also assisting with the pastoral development of the boarding students. Prep happens everyeveningintheBoardingHomesandduringthistime,yourroleistohelpensurethat the students are doing their homework quietly and sensibly, though you should be prepared for some to ask for help with their work - you will need to be willingtoguide themwherepossible!
Prep timeisalsoagoodopportunitytogiveone-to-onesupporttostudentswhomaybe struggling.Therewillalwaysbeamemberoftheboardingstaffondutyatthistime,who has overall responsibility, so you can refer any concerns you may have to him or her if necessary.
HouseCompetitionsandTrips
TheSeniorSchoolHouseCompetitionrunsonMondaysfrom16:15-17:15.Eventsinclude basketball,singing,cross-country,anddramatonamebutafew.Yourrolewillbetohelp organise the students involved, take part in the running of events, motivate those participatingandgenerallyboostHousespirit.Greatideasforadditionstotheprogramme arealwayswelcome!Theremayalsobetimeswhereyouhelpwithorganisingandrunning schooltrips.
BeyondtheCurriculum
Studentsattenda er-schoolCo-CurricularActivities(CCAs)from15:20-16:15intheJunior School (Mon-Thu) and from 16:15 - 17:15intheSeniorSchool(Tue-Thu).Thereisahuge range onofferand,asaGraduateAssistant,youwillbeaskedtohelpwithupto3Junior and upto3Senioractivitieseachweek.Forthemostpart,youwillrunCCAsbasedupon your own interests and expertise, but occasionally may be asked to help with others if morestaffareneeded
OurBeyondtheCurriculumprovisionalsoextendsintosomeSaturdaymorningsbywayof theBryantProgramme.Bryantactivitiesrunfrom09:00-12:00andthemyriadofoptions include scuba diving, hiking, swimming, or drama productions Again, you will assist specificprogrammesbaseduponyourexpertise.
TrainingandWhole-SchoolEvents
In addition to the responsibilities above, you will be expected to engage fully with the training and development opportunities provided throughout the year. This willinclude training from the EAL Department, so that you are in a better position to help students whomaystrugglewithsomeaspectsoftheEnglishlanguage Therewillalsobeoccasions whenyouwillberequiredtohelpoutwithwholeschoolactivitiesand/orsupervision.
