Term2: Study leave and Mocks seem such a distance memory that it’s hard to believe it was the start of Term 2. As always this has been an extremely busy term for the girls. Academically, the Yr13’s have been focussed on the completion of EE, TOK, CAS and final IA’s together with preparation for their language IO’s. The Yr 12’s have just had their R2 grades and this is a good point to reflect on teacher advice prior to the upcoming annuals. The Halla East team would like to wish them all a rest over the break, with some productive study periods:) Our girls are all fabulous but I would like to mention some exceptional contributions and achievements from this term.
Seoyun(Victoria)continuestoimpresswithherleadership skills,leadingthegirlʼsbasketballKISACinBusantoasecond placewinandsecuringtheMPVforthesecondtime.Sheis alsosupportingtheorganizationoftheYr13Promwhichwill beahighlightforthemafterGraduation. Welookforwardto hersisterjoiningusassportingprowessrunsinthefamily!

Chaehyeon(Jasmine),aschairofSonitas,puttogetherafabulouseveningofentertainment –wellattendedbytheboardingcommunity.This“Unplugged”eventisseenasahighlight inthecalendarandthepreparationthatgoesintothiseventcannotbeunderestimated. Jasminehadtojugglemanydifferentpersonalitiesanddemands,whilststillkeepingherself up-to-datewithherownschedule.Inhome,ourresidentbakingQueenisJungahn (Gabrielle)andsheisinspiringotherstogiveitatry.MsKangmadeherfirstbatchof madeleineswhichwentdownatreat.JaeEun(Liz)highlightshowdeterminedourHalla EastgirlsarebysecuringherselfaplaceonthePioneerresearchprogramthissummer.We havealsohadthedecisionoftheBIG8-andwearedelightedthatfourofourgirls:

Manydayshavepassedsincethislongterm,andIhadnumerousdaysthatIfeltsoweary.WheneverIstepintotheglassdoorofHallaEastaftera longday,Ifeelasenseofcomfortfromtheteacherswhosayhellotomeandinvitemewithwarmth.TheirfriendlysmilesmademefeelIhaddonea greatjobduringtheschooldayandmotivatedmetoworkharduntiltheendoftheday.Also,asboarders,wehavetheprivilegeofspendingnotjust ouracademichourstogether,butalsoourleisuretime.Iaccumulatedlotsofindeliblememorieswithmyfriends,whetherIamhappyordepressed gainingenergyfromthem.TheamiableandwarmatmosphereofHallaEastofferscomfortandcompanionshipwhenweneeditmost.Itisthesense ofcommunityandgenuinecarethattrulymakesHallaEastmyproudsecondhome.
LastweekonSaturday,wehadaspecialmusiceventcalled Unplugged,wherealotofHallaEaststudentsshowcasedtheir talents.Asamusiclovermyself,Unpluggedallowedmeto momentarilysetasidetheacademicpressuresthatoftenaccompany studentlife.Fromheartfeltballadstoenergeticcovers,the atmospherewasvitalisingyetassuaging,motivatingmetolive anotherweekfullofvitality.
Beingpartofsuchacaringcommunitybringsmehugejoy,andIam gratefulforeverymomentspenthere.

IBArtExhibition2024
IBvisualartstudentsheldanartexhibition.Thiswasacelebrationandopportunity toshowtheirtwoyearsof dedicatedpassion,creativityandhardwork.Theartworkdisplayedtheirexplorationofindividualthemes throughadiversityofmediumandstyles.
Oneofthegreatartistswhoshowcasedhertalent,Eunseo,hadacaptivatingpieceondisplayofawhite-painted guitarcoveredinears.Themainthemesheaimedtoconveyintheexhibitionthroughherartpiecesrevolved aroundthesignificanceofsoundinhumanexperience,thebeautyfoundwithinnoise,theimpactoftechnology onourperceptionofsound,andthejuxtapositionofnaturalandman-madesounds.Shehopedthatviewers wouldtakeawayaheightenedawarenessoftheintricaciesofsoundanditsinfluenceontheirlives.Shewanted toinspirecuriosity,reflection,andperhapsanewfoundappreciationfortheauditoryworldthatsurroundsus.
“Mymemorablehighlightfromtheexhibitionwaswitnessingviewersengagedeeplywithmyartwork,engaging inconversationsabouttheirowninterpretationsandexperienceswithsound.However,onechallengeI faced duringtheexhibitionwaseffectivelycommunicatingthedepthofmyconceptstoviewers.Iovercame thisby incorporatingdetailedartiststatementsalongsidemypieces”.
Eunseowasabletoreaffirmedherpassionforartthroughthiswonderfulchance.Italsoinspiredhertocontinue exploringthethemeofsoundinmyfutureartisticendeavors,perhapsdelvingdeeperintomultimediaand interactiveinstallationstofurtherimmerseviewersintheauditoryexperience.

BasketballKISAC2024
March2024
SunwooparticipatedinthebasketballKISAC2024competitionasa memberofOrcasNLCS teamandshared herexperiencesonthisevent. TheOrcasmadeitallthewaytothefinalofKISACcompetition,facingoff againstteamsfromBranksomeHall,KIS,andDIS.NLCSsecuredsecond placeoverall,gettingbeatenbyanarrowmargin.
Sunwoosaidthattheexperiencewasincrediblyenjoyableand memorable.Sinceitwasafinalgameforyear13members,shewantedto thankthemfortheirleadershipandguidancethroughouttheyears.This experiencehastaughtthegirls somegreatlifelessonsandcreatedlasting memories,bothof whichhavefueledtheirdeterminationtocomeback betterinfuturecompetitions.

BakingisoneofthemajorwaysIdealwiththesometimes overwhelmingaspectsofsixthformlife.Oneofthegreatest takeawaysfrombakinginboardingistheconnectionitenablesmeto formwithothermembersoftheboardinghouse.Forexample,Ibake cakesduringfriendsʼbirthdays,allowingustotaketimetocelebrate witheachother.Evenwithoutspecialoccasion,freshlybakedcookies arereasonenoughforstudentstopauseandenjoyourselvesamidst ourbusylives.Alongwiththesebenefits,bakingalsocomeswitha warmbatchofcookiesorcakestoenjoyfortherestoftheweek.

Beingpartoftheorchestraistrulyarewardingexperienceforme.Itfeelslikeallthepracticeweput ineveryweekpaysoffwhenwefinallyperform.Ilovethemomentwhenourmusiccomestogether, andtheexcitementpeaksbeforewegoonstage.Thistime,Ihadthechancetoplayasthe concertmaster,whichwashonestlyabitmorenerve-wracking.Butintheend,wesuccessfully performedandreceivedagreatroundofapplause,whichfeltgreat.
Unplugged
ThethemeforUnpluggedeventwasʻThemeParkʼ,andChaeyeon(Jasmine),thechairofSonitasin Year12,ledherSonitasteaminpreparingfortheperformance.Underherguidance,theSonitas (NLCSmusicsociety)preparedfortheirperformancethroughcontinuouspracticesandplanning. Notcontentwithjustperfectingtheirperformance,theyalsocreatedandsellthemedmerchandises suchasstickers,badges,anddelicioussnacks.Theeventwasfantasticexperiencethatcreatedan atmosphereofpurejoyandexcitementjustliketheconceptofʻThemeParkʼandlefteveryone smilingandlookingforwardtomorememorableperformancesinthefuture.

[...] Although there were many hardships, I am grateful to have experience this leadership role because it helped me improve myself in every way. I think I couldn’t have put on such a successful show without all the support and trust that my peers and staff gave me!”

AstheirsecondtermR2gradeandtheirannualexamswasapproaching,learningsomestrategiestomanagetheirstresslevels,particularly concerningacademics,wasnecessaryandessential.Toaddressthis,year12boardingstudentswereorganisedintogroupsandeachgroupwere presentedwithvariousstress-inducingscenarios.Theywerethentaskedwithdevisingstrategiestocopewiththesechallenges.Throughoutactive discussionduringtheOutductionsession,manyofthemsuggesteddifferentinsightfulapproachestothesedifficultsituations,demonstrating adaptabilityinthefaceofacademicpressure.

Foryear12,annualexamsarecomingupimmediatelyafterbreak.To befullypreparedfortheexams,theyhavestartedseveralweeks aheadofthebreak.TheyareattendingAcademicEnhancement sessionswithMrJewitt(HoDEnglish)tobetterprepareforPaper1, aswellasusingthesupportofourmathsgrad,MsKang.
Itisimportanttosetupstrategiesontimemanagement,sleeping routines andsticktotheplannedschedule.Especiallyduringthe break,itiscrucialforstudentstomaintainabalancebetweentheir physicalandmentalwell-being,aswellastheiracademic performances.Weencouragethemtotaketimetoenjoythebreak andrechargereadytocomebackanddelivertheirbest. Furthermore,pleasefeelopentoprovideyoursupportand encouragementathomeastheynavigatethroughthischallenging period:)
