Halla East News October 2023

Message from Ms Coughlan (BM) October 2023

Year 13: Last year, the Halla team worked closely with the then year 12 girls, monitoring their progress across academic subjects, the core- EE, CAS and supporting their wellbeing. This effort has already paid off as the year 13 girls came back ready for the final leg of the IB journey. I am very proud of the girls and the strides they are taking and progress they are making. There has been clear evidence of a concerted effort, meetings with UGC and test taking, as well as, completing their college applications. There has been emotional highs and lows but they are all moving forward. They also experienced their first “Out, out” Outduction night, where we were aiming to instill skills and knowledge for independent living when they move beyond NLCS. Year 12 : R1 grades rapidly approaching has had a settling effect on some of the girls, whilst others have been concerned about their performance. Some bad habits have creeped in - with late nights and poor self-care meaning the Halla team have needed to intervene. We aim to treat the girls as young adults in Halla, as this is their stepping stone between the structured IGCSE and boarding environment and the freedoms of University life. Some of the girls clearly need to support in developing their own routines and working to their potential. All the girls identified have been meet and plans will be in place to support them after the break.

Student Events October 2023

Halla Climb Y12 students went up to the Halla mountain October 21st, Saturday morning. The majority of students successfully climbed up to the top, to the summit of 1500m. Although it was slightly windy, the weather was sunny and perfect for students to climb the mountain. The picturesque scenery of fall leaves coloured in red and orange captivated students and aesthetically pleased them. After their successful climb, students headed to the Korean pork barbeque place and enjoyed their lunch after an intensive excursion. Most of the students thought that the Halla climb activity was a valuable and memorable experience.

Congratulations on your Halla Climb!

Oxbridge & Academics Year 13s had their due date for Oxbridge university applications this October. Emily Lim, who is one of our applicants mentioned that “My motivation was due to the presence of ‘joint degree’, which is the unique curriculum provided by oxbridge university. As I applied for two major subjects including psychology and philosophy, I found highly intriguing that the university provides me that opportunity to study in various fields.” Wendy is another applicant and said, “I love it! Oxbridge asks for many steps, tests, and personal statements. Although it’s demanding, each step feels like I’m doing something. It’s fulfilling.”

Home life October 2023

As we gazed out of the window from our boarding house on Jeju Island, the sky was always been a breathtaking canvas of colors. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow that painted with hues of orange, and rarely pink, or purple. The tranquil night slowly descended, revealing a starry sky that sparkled like a thousand diamonds. Unlike haughty atmosphere of city, Jeju gives a small gift of calm, peaceful, and beautiful night for all of us in boarding house. Jeju's skies, sunsets, and nights are truly a sight to behold, a natural masterpiece which we can easily view when we only take one step outside.

Outduction October 2023

Outduction workshops 15th October: Year 13s First night “Out out” - this event raised awareness of the social differences in Western countries and building knowledge and understanding on keeping safe. We want them to enjoy their socialising but be aware of potential risks. Year 12 will be directed by the medical staff on self medicating, dangers, awareness and again about how to keep self safe and healthy when you are away from home and your support network. What can you find in your fridge to make you feel better? What three words can locate you?

Halla East News October 2023

Mandarin Night: For the last couple of weeks on Wednesdays, IB Mandarin students were invited to Halla Mandarin Night led by Ms Kang in Halla East. Students got together to practice speaking Mandarin and discuss topics regarding Chinese culture. So far we have discussed about health and education in relation to Chinese culture. We also had some Chinese mooncakes and milk tea during the sessions. It has been very successful and hearing from one of our participants it seems to be a helpful and enjoyable time. We hope to see more students join after the half-term break!

French Night: "French Night," as described by Ms. Grady, is an exceptional opportunity for individuals to engage with the French language in a warm and inclusive environment. It serves as a platform to cater to the specific needs of participants, whether they are working towards language fluency assessments or simply seeking assistance with their homework. The primary focus is on honing oral communication skills through meaningful conversations, although valuable resources from the French Department are available for guidance. What makes this program truly exciting is the promise of diverse and enjoyable activities, including the prospect of indulging in delectable snacks, hosting guest speakers, and even planning an off-campus excursion. French Night not only encourages linguistic development but also fosters a sense of community and cultural appreciation within the participants.

Until next time… October 2023
