BOARDING MASTER MESSAGE
Dear all,
What a fantastic year Hyeopjae boarding home had!
I would like, first of all, to thank you, parents, for the trust and support you have given us this year. Hyeopjae's team has really appreciated it. We believe we can build from this and do even better working together to make the boarding experience of your son even more exceptional. We have taken your feedback seriously and will try to share it with our boarding community. This year, we have been lucky to start the "Parent's Tea Party" and "Seoul Meet " again, and we are looking forward to developing these kinds of events and communication next year!
Your sons have shared some of their favorite times and stories spent this year. I am sure many other and different memories, will be shared and some of these, will be staying with them forever.
For me, it is how these boys got together, worked, and competed together. They managed to bond and build a good family feel within the home Older students supporting the youngsters, guiding them through their leadership skills, welcoming with open arms new boarders and helping them to settle quickly, making a feel of brotherhood and belonging!
Sadly, a few boarders will be leaving the boarding home and I hope they will keep a good memory of their stay in Hyeopjae Boarding Home Our Year 11 are moving to Halla, others moving to another country or returning to their parents, and I hope they can take with them the positive things they learned here.
To finish, I would like to say thank you to Mr. Neiland for his contribution to developing the boarding home, and also for supporting your sons, with dedication, professionalism, and care. He brought “Morning Warriors”, a garden, and much more to this home, and I would like to pass all my best wishes to his next venture! He will be missed by the team and also the boys.
Thank you again to you, parents, the boys, and the Hyeopjae team (including the matron, laundry, and cleaners) to make this year a successful year! See you all after the summer break. Have a safe and restful summer!
Sincerely
Mr Crebier and Hyeopjae's teamY11 - 2022-23
Mr. Neiland
Boys,
Over the last weeks, I quietly have had to reflect on my own wellbeing and what is best for myself and my family. I have come to the difficult conclusion that leaving NLCS Jeju to return to the mainland and be closer to family and friends is in our best interests
In my eyes, the most significant aspect of my job here at NLCS has been the opportunity that I have had to form relationships. It is the relationships that I have with the students, especially the boys in Hyeopjae that brought me the most joy and zest for my job. You truly brought a smile to my day and it has been a pleasure to watch you develop over the last two years. By continuing to overcome adversity with perseverance, and tirelessly serving something greater than yourself, I hope you will look back on your time here with absolute pride in all your accomplishments and memories that will last a lifetime.
I challenge you (in the positive sense of the word!) to continue to use the rich culture of selfimprovement and all-rounded pursuits to not only develop your own character, but to find your niche and excel. Your duty is to go against the grain. To explore the unfamiliar and to do more than is asked of you within the comfortable niche that you might acquire. As Professor Martin Seligman stated: “Do not be drawn back by your past but rather be pulled forward by the opportunities that lie in the future”. I am excited to see where your path takes you all and will quietly cheer for you always.......... you "muppets".
Onwards and Upwards,
Mr NeilandHYEOPJAE HOME LEADERS
YEAR 11
CHARLY LEE 22-23
HOME LEADER
The last 2 years of my life in Hyeopjae were just incredible. I enjoyed every bit of my life, including when I didn’t even have a good time. Amongst the happy memories, my favourite part is chilling outside on a hammock under lush trees. Hyeopjae has a small yard in front with trees and a small garden. Every weekend if the weather is nice enough we put cushions and bean bags and hammocks to chill. Whenever I was lying outside looking at the crystal clear sky of Jeju, I could relieve myself from all the stress and that really made me cope with any adversities.
My most memorable memory in Hyeopjae was preparing for the Halloween party. Previously, we never really decorated for Halloween but this time we turned our first floor into a completely new place. Though this was time-consuming and challenging, the all house worked together starting from brainstorming to execution. The fact that everyone was involved and keen, showed me a unity that I have never seen, which impressed me a lot.
Likewise, I love Hyeopjae no matter what!
This was my second year in Hyeopjae, and I am writing this as the new home leader of this boarding home. Hyeopjae has been more than just a place to sleep. Instead, it was a place that allowed wonderful brothers, friends, and teachers to dissolve into my life as an integral part of it, and I am truly honoured to describe these people as my "Family". As a longstanding member of Hyeopjae, I have been fortunate to experience the many ways in which this home has positively impacted my life, both mentally and physically. The outstanding environment and earnest friendships that I have found here have helped me develop a more optimistic outlook on life. On top of that, I thank Hyeopjae for the significant improvements in my grades, particularly during my challenging year 10.
MEMORIES IN HYEOPJAE
One of the most memorable and impressive activities is the Balloon Olympics. Everyone participated very actively, and the reason it was fun was that the teams were able to cooperate with each other and compete with other teams. We did activities such as blowing up balloons and blowing up a lot of cups with balloons.
Next is Hyeopjae Beach. The best thing I could say at this time was the memories of going out swimming with friends and enjoying the different shops at Tapdong.
Also, I enjoyed the countless amount of barbeques that we had as a house.
YEAR 7 JAY SONG
YEAR 8
JOON PARK
As a Year 8 student, my time at the boarding home 'Hyeopjae' was filled with incredible memories that will stay with me forever. It was a place where friendships flourished, and I shared fantastic and superb times with my friends, elders, and the young ones. The highlight of our boarding experience was undoubtedly our unforgettable barbecues, savouring delicious food and enjoying each other's company under the starry sky. We also had the opportunity to showcase our skills in sports matches against other boarding homes, where the thrill of competition brought out the best in us. The house trips we embarked on were nothing short of magical, exploring breathtaking landscapes and creating lasting bonds along the way. Whether it was the beach or the football stadium, every outing was an adventure waiting to be savoured. This year's boarding experience was truly outstanding, and I couldn't help but fall in love with every moment spent at Hyeopjae.
Reflecting on my two years in Hyeopjae, Hyeopjae always felt like a second or even my real home. Every time I came back from a long break, I always felt welcomed, and safe, and had a sense of affection in Hyeopjae. Friends who were awkward at the beginning of the year are now one of the best friends who share a closer bond than my family regardless of which year group one belongs to. Some might feel that boarding life consists of strict rules and regulations but during my two years, I gained a wide variety of innumerable experiences, including house trips, house barbeques, and various annual events, to list but a few. Although every member of Hyeopjae has come from different families, hometowns, and backgrounds, it is clear that we have come together as a “Family” throughout the long but short, valuable journey of one year.
YEAR 10 SANGHOO AHN
My first year in Hyeopjae has dashed past compellingly in a blink of an eye. Well, that unquestionably means that I’ve had remarkable experiences throughout the year as a member of this beloved house. As soon as I first arrived, fellow members helped me immensely in settling into a new environment. The immeasurable bond between and within the year groups has amazed me constantly, which is considered the most beneficial aspect of being a boarder. Some of the core memories I have had this year include the Hyeopjae beach trip, Tapdong trips, Vaunce, Barbeque parties, battle of the beaches, and house activities such as the fashion show and mini-games. These memories will surely live inside me for the rest of my life when thinking back to my wonderful school days. Ultimately, I believe that Hyeopjae has been the ideal place for me over the past year to excel in both academics and socialisation. I am grateful to be a part of this exceptional community and I’m fully optimistic in looking forward to another year here.
I recently had the most amazing boarding home trip to the beach with my friends, and it was truly a memorable experience. Spending quality time with my friends was the highlight of the trip. We laughed, played games, and created unforgettable memories together. The beach offered the perfect backdrop for our adventures, especially when we all went swimming together. The feeling of the cool water on our skin, the waves crashing around us, and the joy of splashing and playing games in the sea made it an incredible bonding experience. Additionally, we indulged in some delicious food together. This trip has become one of my favourite memories, reminding me of the cherished moments we had as high school students, enjoying the simple pleasures of friendship, swimming, and good food at the beach.
YEAR 10 SANGYOON LEE
MY YEAR IN HYEOPJAE BOARDING HOME. A YEAR IN KOREA. DYLAN
GOTA MURPHY Y10
My name is Dylan. I have lived in the Hyeopjae boarding house this past year. I chose NLCS Jeju because of how far it was from my home, with a different language and culture, which would make my experience more everlasting. I already had a few Korean friends before, but this past year I have immersed myself and learned so much more about Korea.
At NLCS Jeju, I enjoyed boarding a lot for many reasons.
Firstly, the school boarding houses have a system called breakout, where the Sports Hall and Art buildings are open. I loved playing basketball during this time as I am an avid basketball fan. I got to play lots after school and even more on the weekends. Also, I was able to practice my cello which helped me improve a lot this year including performing in Orchestra. Before in Madrid, I did still play basketball every day, but here it is much easier as it is literally a 30second walk away, and the high-quality hardwood courts are not normally packed. I also tried some new sports here such as badminton, and even squash, a game that I never even knew existed until NLCS.
Another reason I enjoyed my time at boarding was the actual boarding house. It had a PS4, which I played FIFA on lots since at my own house we don’t own any consoles, and the rooms are also pretty spacious. Not only that, but it is so good to have a brew room just for our year group since sharing it with more people would make it extremely messy. Not only that but there were many boarding house events, such as Hip-Hop night or barbeques, but my favourite one was the Halloween party, as I loved the vibe that everyone was supporting and it went late into the night! Overall, all of these events went extremely well and it is a big part that I will miss about boarding school. Lastly, it felt like my whole house were my brothers, and I enjoyed the Hyeopjae house where I made many friends that I will remember. I did many things with people from Hyeopjae, and they also helped me when I first got here.
I really enjoyed my time here and it will stick with me forever, and now Korea is one of my favourite places that I will be sure to revisit!
