Arts Festival The Arts Festival takes place for 5 days at the end of the summer term and has become one of the key events that makes NLCS Jeju exceptional. That we celebrate our student’s talents in such a creative and positive end to the year is a testament to the commitment the school has to the arts. Up to 100 events ranging from PAC spectaculars to small fringe performances make up a fabulous programme, even in the difficult circumstances of the last two years. Many of the most important efforts go unseen and it is the large technical teams helping with the staging, lighting and sound design, along with what have become mini TV studios that support each of the live streams that are the real ‘engine rooms’ of the Festival. Past students clearly remember the experiences of performing or providing technical support for events and the large number of Alumni that continue to be involved has been significant. Traditionally, Parents have also been very generous with their time and resources and to have this creative support adds another level of expertise to the events.

Dance The Dance Department aims to showcase as much student work as possible via curriculum, co curricular and student led activities. When opportunities arise we enjoy collaborating with other departments in the Arts faculty. Dance is available to all students from Year 3 to IB level and it is growing in popularity each year. Performance opportunities are incredibly important to build students’ confidence, to give them a goal to work towards and to provide a creative challenge for them to enjoy. Through this they build friendships across all year groups, experience leadership opportunities and maintain physical fitness.

Concept shows One of the most exciting aspects of the Arts Programme over the years have been the Dance Department’s concept shows. Based around themes such as ‘Superhuman’ (inspired by David Bowie) and ‘Rooster’ (inspired by the Rolling Stones) these shows showcase the exceptional talents of our students in creating and performing contemporary and popular dance choreography. This year we have a range of exceptional dance recitals that are sure to be ‘standing room only’ including Arts Festival performances and a highlights programme in Drama Studio 1 in November.

Drama The Drama Department at NLCS Jeju provides a vast array of activities for students as part of the Co-Curricular and Bryant programmes. The majority of these culminate in a performance that is open to the public. These performances may be small-scale intimate pieces of theatre in one of our smaller Drama performance spaces, or they may be one of our ensemble productions with a large cast of students from all year groups. These have been known to involve upwards of 150 students in various capacities ranging from Set and Costume Design to Technical support, making these a truly whole school event. We stage plays, musicals, improvised and devised theatre and dance theatre in many genres and styles. Some are directed and produced by staff but many are student-driven projects. These performances compliment the many performances that are generated as part of the IGCSE Drama course and the IB Theatre course. Both these courses demand that the students perform live and we believe that allowing our students to do this to an invited audience provides them with an excellent opportunity to showcase their work and assess the impact that the performance has on their audience.

Musical Theatre Mainstays of the Arts Programme, these ambitious projects encompass Drama, Dance, Music and technical teams and without exception result in outstanding shows. Previous shows have included ‘Disco Inferno’ and ‘Into the Woods’ and this year the Senior School will be taking ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ to the stage in December. Student-led musicals have been hugely successful in the past two years with a successful staging of Dear Evan Hansen and even more impressively a highly ambitious and enjoyable student-devised musical ‘When Colours Speak’. Stage Productions Various devised and scripted performances, often to support IGCSE Drama and IB Theatre, are regularly performed by our exceptionally talented drama students in the Performing Arts Centre (PAC) and the more intimate Drama Studio 1. Superb recent shows have included ‘Victorian Ghost Stories’, ‘The Christmas Carol’ and ‘Grimms Tales’. Also KS3 Devised Productions in recent years have included “In Their Shoes’’ (a subtle piece exploring the plight of migrants around the world which was creatively supported by Red Leap Theatre Company), and an environmental piece called “The Tree”. This year we will be having a showcase of drama from Years 7-9 in ‘Magic or Tragic’ performed in November, the Tempest performed in the Spring Term and the Junior School will be performing a Korean myth ‘The Three Questions’ in the summer. Opera One of the outstanding elements of our Arts Programme in the past three years has been the introduction of Opera to the PAC stage. Working with Opera@Jeju, our chamber orchestra and our Year 8 students the drama department have very successfully staged Dido and Aeneus (2019) and the Magic Flute (2020) and are looking forward to presenting Bizet’s Carmen in this year’s Arts Festival in June.

Music The music department aims to ignite a passion and appreciation for a wide variety of musical styles, from any time, place or culture. We relentlessly promote an ethos of personal excellence and leadership, nurturing students’ intrinsic motivation for success. The music department is a bustling area of the school during breaks, lunch and after co-curricular, active with instrumental lessons, independent practice and student or teacher-led ensembles. The Music society, Sonitas, is an ever-growing organisation, with several branches, representing a diverse range of musical genres. We provide a platform from which any student with a passion in music can express themselves, regardless of their level of proficiency. Winter and Spring Junior and Senior School Concerts (November and March) These concerts are an outstanding showcase of musical talent and diversity on our PAC stage and regularly feature over 200 students. Recent items have included chamber orchestra works by Darius Milhaud, Concerto for Two Violins and Strings in C Major by Telemann and a combined whole-school orchestral arrangement of Holst’s Jupiter. Recital Series Many of the performances heard in our monthly evening recitals would not be out of place in musical conservatories around the world. The Junior School students start the musical year formally by performing in a stunning Chuseok soloists concert in our PAC and various recitals, often to support GCSE and IB studies, are performed by our exceptionally talented students and are beautifully enhanced by the superb grand piano and acoustics in our Concert Room. Unplugged An opportunity for the upcoming pop, rock, hip-hop stars of NLCS Jeju to perform in front of their peers in an evening event. These events are so much more than just the music, as sound, lighting and promotional teams work together to put on an outstanding show for their peers. Always a sell-out. Busking Typically, NLCS Jeju takes an informal concept and makes it exceptional. Concert-standard performances regularly ring out around the corridors at break and lunchtimes in the Junior and Senior Schools as confident classical and pop performers play whilst the world drifts by.
Instrumental Programme We have a team of 28 instrumental teachers providing lessons to over 350 students a week. These lessons can be individual or ensemble-focused and we have just started to offer music technology lessons to those who wish to develop their knowledge of computer-based music. Details of this programme are sent out before each term by our Instrumental Programme coordinator. ABRSM Exams More than 150 students take part in ABRSM exams in November and May each year. NLCS is one of the biggest ABRSM centres in Korea and our instrumental team is expert in preparing our students for exam success. The honours boards in our music department showing the many Diploma and Grade 8 distinctions are a testament to the success of this programme since we introduced it in 2012. Trinity Exams NLCS Jeju is the first (and currently only)Trinity Rock and Pop exam centre in South Korea. These International examinations credit our Rock and Pop musicians with a qualification equal in value to our ABRSM candidates. Trinity exams develop Rock and Pop performing skills through learning carefully selected songs by Trinity which continually challenge our musicians from Grade 1 to 8. Examinations are available on drum kit, bass guitar, electric guitar, keyboard and voice.

Visual Arts The Art department is a vibrant and successful department that aims to provide an extensive and varied education within the Visual Arts and Design. We teach a collaborative and integrated curriculum that delivers different aspects of art and art history aiming to nurture informed and risk taking young artists. Our belief in teaching outstanding technical skills ensures that each student is equipped and empowered to move forward and realise their own passion within the Visual Arts, be it within ceramics, digital arts or painting. All forms of expression are openly celebrated and encouraged within a department that truly resonates a passion for creativity.
IB Art Exhibition One of our most prestigious events, the IB Art Exhibition is always astounding in its quality, diversity and its scale. With around 30 students exhibiting two years of work it is always a challenge to physically exhibit the work but the Art Department always manages to put on a superb show. When you walk around you can understand why so many of our students are successful in gaining places at prestigious institutions such as The Slade and Central St Martins.
Printmaking Students are given opportunities to exlpore a wide range printmaking teachniques and these include monoprint, cyanotype, linoprint, drypoint edging and photographic silk screenprinting.
Fashion Clothing design and tailoring has always been a major part of the Art Department provision but has recently seen a resurgence and is now run as a Bryant and co curricular activity throughout the year. The department is equipped with a range of professional tailoring equipment. Expert staff lead students towards a spectacular Fantasy Fashion show in the Arts Festival in June.

Student Technical Teams An integral part of the NLCS Arts Provision is our superb technical team that supports the running of our performance spaces. Two full time members of staff are kept incredibly busy making sure that everything looks and sounds stunning as well as keeping everything safe and running smoothly. These staff also oversee and run a CCA (co-curricular activity) for a number of student teams who help with the technical setup and performance during large and small scale performances around the school.
Student Media Teams So what to do with all of this content? Our student teams overseen by our marketing department work tirelessly (especially during Arts Festival) to film, photograph, edit and publish media in outstanding quality. This opportunity has given many students the inspiration to study arts-related courses at university. Examples of our student-media work can be seen on our website and Youtube channels.
Arts Societies These student-led societies are some of the most active in the school and have large memberships working on projects throughout the year and most notably during the Arts Festival and during Enrichment Weeks. (weeks in the year where the subject is promoted by teachers and students)

The group meets fortnightly and plans student-led arts events such as those held during the Arts Festival. The Senior Arts Council are currently Alison Hyeyun Song, James Hyeonmin Bang, Andrew Kimyoung Cheon, Alice Seungju Oh, Elysia Seoyoon Bae, and Ginger Heeoseo Kim.
