ARTS FESTIVAL CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2023
IGCSE RESULTS - TOP IN THE WORLD!
Well we have finally reached the end of term after the Arts Festival has drawn to a magnificent close. This week has seen our Year 6 graduation ceremony as well as the Senior School Sports Day and celebration assemblies. It has also been delightful to be able to hold our first Summer Fete for four years! What a very busy week!
It is always delightful when this year’s graduates come back into School to give back to the School by helping at events. Thank you to all those who come in regularly to help. We also thank our alumni who have worked with students in various musical events. As always their contributions are valued and appreciated by all.
We all want to wish our graduates of 2023 a wonderful summer as they relax and prepare for the next stage of their lives at universities. We have confidence in their abilities and we look forward to receiving their IBDP results in July and the later about their experiences at their chosen universities.
We are also always very sad to say goodbye to any of our teaching staff. As always we have some leaving who may have been with us for only a couple of years or so but we will also lose some longer standing members of staff. Dan Long who has been with us for such a long time and is a stalwart of the PE Department and Boarding is moving on to promotion elsewhere and he takes with him his wife NIcola who has also been a teacher at the School and his family. We wish them all every success in the future.
On the Senior Team we are also saddened that Dan Coll along with his wife Sandra will be leaving us to take up new opportunities with NLCS International. Dan started at NLCS Jeju at the same time as me and his commitment and support will be greatly missed by us all and none more than me. We wish them every success and expect them back at NLCS Jeju when we all come together as NLCS schools from time to time.
On behalf of all of us at NLCS Jeju we wish all our students and their families a wonderful summer holiday. We hope they will have time for relaxation and exploring new interests and passions. We all thank our teachers for their care and hard work over the last year and we hope that they too have time to relax and enjoy life away from NLCS Jeju over the summer!
Yours sincerely
Lynne Oldfield PrincipalHere are the biggest stories from around the School this week.
As with every year, the Valedictory was a huge success and a very memorable occasion. Each Year 13 Tutor took to stage to personally mention each of their tutees, our previous Head Boy (Philip Kim) and Head Girl (Julia Back) gave an inspirational speech, we received a warm message from our Alumni Parent Association Chair and our students gave an impeccable musical performance for our alumni and guests.
The day was full of joy and we are all looking forward to following their journeys, wherever life may take them. They are all now officially ONLJ members and we will keep in touch!
Thank you to the Sixth Form team, the Events team, the Tech team and Quadra team for their arrangements. More photos
Congratulations to Inwook Hwang, Jeremy Kim and Amy Nam who were selected to receive a generous scholarship from the Alumni Parent Association. The three students were chosen based on their unwavering commitment to community service whilst at School and in the wider community. These awards are very well deserved. We will miss them at the School but know that their actions would have inspired our younger students to continue their community work.
We are proud to share the news that two NLCS Jeju students have won IGCSE awards for the May/June 2022 exams.
Hwayoung Shin (Y12) achieved the ‘Highest Mark in the Republic of Korea’ for IGCSE Art and Design: Fine Art.
Kyubin Min (Y12) achieved the ‘Highest Mark in the World’ for IGCSE Mathematics. Here, his Maths teachers reflect on their time teaching Kyubin.
“Kyubin is simply an exceptional and academically gifted mathematician and it was my pleasure and privilege to teach him in years 10 and 11. His outstanding achievement in IGCSE Mathematics is fully deserved and is a result of not only his natural ability, but also his hard work and dedication.” - Ms. Sarah Roberts.
“Kyubin is a curious student who is always motivated to learn more exploring mathematics beyond the syllabus” - Mr. Jearson Narvaez.
This is the second year in a row that a student has received this award in Maths - won last year by Hyeonbi Lucy Jee (class of 2023).
“NLCS Jeju has a very strong reputation for being academically exceptional.Mathematics is one of the subjects where our students achieve incredible results. NLCS Jeju is a unique place, where mathematics has no limits.” - Ms. Duygu Bulut (Head of Maths)
As with every year, the Arts Festival brought the School to life. It is easy to see why many of our students say that it is the highlight of their time at NLCS Jeju. The whole School is involved and all forms of art are celebrated. We were treated to dancing, busking, recitals, concerts, art exhibitions and much more. There was a sound of music and joy across the campus as students practised for their big moment or whilst the performances were taking place, and again after the performances as the audiences reminisced about what they just watched.
A massive thank you to the Music, Dance, Drama and Art departments, the PAC tech crew, the student tech team, the events team and all the performers for such a special week.
No more words though, here are some photos which speak for themselves. More photos
On Sunday evening we gathered together with Yujin’s friends and family and took time to remember the talented Yujin Choi, who sadly passed away last year. Yujin was a talented musician and singer songwriter and this evening of music and reflection was a fitting tribute to her. We thank everyone who helped make this evening special.
A memorial garden, which will be a space of peace and reflection for all, is being created on campus, in memory of Yujin and will be completed soon.

“The Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) is carried out in conjunction with the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO) and the University of British Columbia . The CCC is aimed at the top 10% of Canadian high school and cégep students under 20 years of age taking chemistry. The following NLCS Jeju students:
Jeongmin Chae, Guru Han, Hyeonki Kim, Jae Yoon Kim, Yeonwoo Kim, Junghyun Lee, Yujin Lee, Chaeyun Shin, Junseo Shin and Dongmin Yoon have received the special merit by coming in the top 10% of all competitors in this competition. Congratulations to them all!”- Mr Derek Patenaude.
“The NLCS Jeju representative team, comprised of Yehee Jung (Y10), Soowhan Jun (Y9), Teddy Shin (Y9) and Bella Kim (Y9), won a place in the World Schools Debating League (WSDL) 2023 Open Finals, progressing beyond NLCS Jeju’s previous record of Junior break. After nearly 10 weeks of debating, the team achieved a unanimous victory in the final round despite Yehee and Soowhan having iron-manned against a full team of 3.”Soowhan Jun
“2022/23 was the 45th year of continuous operation of the ACSL competition! Last year, over 700 teams in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia participated. Each season is divided into four contests, testing students on fundamental concepts in computer science, ranging from Number Systems to Boolean Algebra to Digital Electronics. In the upper divisions, each contest also includes a problem to solve by programming using Python, C++ or Java.
Contests are administered online. Team advisors facilitate students’ access to the online platform; the platform corrects the submissions and reports the scores to ACSL.
From NLCS Jeju, we had 4 teams from senior school enter this competition this year. 7 students from NLCS Jeju got an award in the final contest which was held on 29th May 2023. I congratulate these students on their success. They have spent numerous hours preparing for this competition and motivated many other students in school to take the challenge next year.” - Mr. Tajvir Singh.
Gold - Geonwoo Kim (Y10)
Silver - Kyubin Min (Y12),
Bronze - Joonseok Kang (Y12), DongHo Yang (Y12), Seohee Han (Y10), Edward Yoon (Y9) and Hojin Kim (Y9)

Well done to Riwon (Emily) Hwang (Y8) who won bronze in the first round of the KOI and to DongHo Yang (Y12) who was awarded the gold award in the general high school division - only 0.46% of students have achieved this award. He was placed 11th position overall and 2nd place in the non-science high school category in South Korea.
Junyoung (Joshua) Lee in Year 9 won a judge award in VEX IQ Robotics World Championship held in April in Dallas, US. His team 2684W qualified for the Korean national team by winning the VIQC Korea National Championship in February. Congratulations!
Congratulations to Seo Yoon (Sarah) Park (Y13) who has been selected as a presidential Science Scholarship student. Sarah will receive a generous scholarship during her university studies. Sarah informed Mr. Gwangho Im that she referenced her service experience during the interview process and believes it contributed to her selection.
Yerim (Chloe) Lee in Year 8 showed off her Latin skills in international awards this year. She won the gold medal in the 2023 National Latin Vocabulary Exam. She received 60 points based on a cut-off score this year of 56. She also received the silver medal in the 2023 National Latin Exam and ‘maxima cum laude’ honour, with a score of 34 on the exam. Congratulations!
Year 9 Yunseo (Shirley) Jang, Seungah (Elina) Han, and Yewon (Apple) Kim participated in the WSC competition (https://www.scholarscup.org/) from May 27 to 28. They achieved the feat of winning first place in the team debate, first place in team writing, and first place overall in the competition. Congratulations!
It is back - bigger and better than ever before. After a COVID hiatus our students have thrown themselves into arranging a fun packed and exciting day for us all to enjoy. The students are all still busy tidying up as we finish the newsletter, so we will be sharing photos and information soon.
Stalls included games such as roulette, ping pong ball throwing and traditional Korean games. Food and drinks including bubble tea, chicken, cotton candy and watermelon punch. Activities - face painting, photo booth, lucky draw and a tombola.
Thank you to the students, Heads of House teams, Beyond the Curriculum team, Events team, PRG and CNS for everything they have done to support this event.
A really lovely day celebrating the completion of their first year at NLCS Jeju. We wish all the students well for the next academic year when they join Year 1. More photos
Marking the end of an era, our Year 6 students took to the stage and had their moment in the spotlight. A number of students also won awards for excellence in particular areas, including; Behaviour, Languages, Drama, Music, Effort, Sportsmanship and more! Well done to all the award winners. More photos
“This project, as a component of the activities carried out by the student-led organisation ‘About Korea,’ has been to demonstrate appreciation for the labour and efforts of the campus workers that were previously overlooked in celebration of Labor Day. The project has further aimed to elevate awareness and advocacy for the rights of workers in recognition of their invaluable contributions towards the advancement and productivity of our school community. By promoting a culture of gratitude and respect towards workers and recognising them as human beings with unique individuality, this initiative has endeavoured to foster an equitable and just school environment that values the welfare and dignity of all workers.” -
Here is the video, edited by Yerim Jeong (Y 10). We urge you all to watch this and as it will make us all think more carefully as we walk around the School.
“Anthony Bourdain said that ‘Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small, and in return, life - and travel - leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks - on your body or on your heart - are beautiful.’
The Duke of Edinburgh Award provides the opportunity to have vivid experiences of life, exploration and observation. Travel is the only thing you can buy that will make you richer. It is no coincidence that the most successful people travelled their own country and the world. Just today Ms. Oldfield was telling me about her four months in Rwanda. I was immediately transformed to a different place and my desire to travel grew with every description of her experience in Africa.
Joonseok Kang, Lijie Lu, Dongha Kim, Sangwoo Park, Hwayoung Shin, Eujune Lee, Taehee Kim and Seoyun Ju have just returned from ‘An Exploration of the north-east coast of Japan, it’s culture and people and the impact of the 2011 tsunami’. It was an incredible trip to one of the most beautiful places in the world. They saw awe-inspiring coastlines, met wonderfully kind people, learnt about the horrendous impact of the tsunami and immersed themselves in local culture and cuisine. This was experiential learning at its very best.” - Mr. Nick Chaddock.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Chaddock - his passion for DofE and outdoor education in general has inspired many.
Here is a wonderful video highlighting the best bits of the Mandarin Enrichment Week which took place earlier this term. Thank you to the Mandarin Department and to Mr. Masrey for editing.
“A competition for students aged 13-15 who have a genuine interest in Biology, was held on 12 May 2023. This competition consisted of two papers with questions set on school curriculum but also on the knowledge of Biology-related books, magazines and news articles. 21 students were recognized with a Bronze, Silver or Gold award. Congratulations to all the contenders of the Biology Challenge!” - Ms. Lindsay Lee
“22 May was the ‘International Day for Biological Diversity’, proclaimed by the United Nations to increase the awareness of biodiversity.
In order to support the good cause of International Day for Biological Diversity, the Biology Society held the ‘Invasive Species Removal from Jeju Campaign.’ Educational session about invasive species in our neighbourhood and the significance of conserving biodiversity was delivered to students, who took a step forward and went out to the GEC community to clear invasive species.
On 13 May, the members of the Biology Society of NLCS Jeju —I, Rayne Seobin Lee (the chair, Y12), Dowon Kim (Y10), Daeun Lee (Y10), Hyomin Gwak (Y9), Jihu Park (Y9), and Nayeon Kim (Y9)—worked to remove invasive species on the GEC path near our school. Specifically, they cleared “flatweed (Hypochaeris radicata)”, also known as ‘fake dandelion’, designated as an ecosystem-disturbing species by the Ministry of Environment of Korea. This campaign was a great opportunity for the Biology Society of NLCS Jeju to protect the biodiversity of our community.
Looking very similar to dandelions, flatweed is commonly found on roadsides, grasslands, and mountains in Jeju Island, not to mention the southwest coast of Korea. You can easily spot this species in our neighbourhood.
The flatweed grows in the shape of a plate covering the ground and spreads hundreds of its ‘helicopter’ seeds. The problem is that flatweed forces great pressure on the competition of plants for limited resources and eventually kills and replaces the defeated native plants from the area.
Invasive plants designated as ecosystem disturbance species, such as flatweed, cause a great disruptive impact on domestic ecosystems. This is why the Biology Society held a campaign to remove the flatweed. We are a part of nature, and biodiversity needs our effort to last.”
Rayne LeeAs you are aware we are trialling air quality monitors at School to better educate ourselves on how to improve the air quality at NLCS Jeju for the benefit of all our students, staff and visitors. This is of huge importance to us and we were pleased to see the company we have selected, ‘AirGradient’ featuring on the BBC news as they are undertaking a huge survey of classrooms around the UK. We are clearly in safe hands.
SO HAPPY - EPISODE 4
Another great video created by Seoha Han. The video was displayed throughout the Pride month exhibition and during the Arts Festival. The video focuses on diversity, equity, and inclusion and makes us really think about what that means and how we can all be better and ensure we are all practising what we preach.
“Speak Out / Look Out - The One Shared Humanity Exhibition, ran throughout Arts Week.
Taking inspiration from NLCS Jeju’s Arts Week theme of ‘Secrets and Discoveries’, the Equity Society curated this exhibition to explore identity and celebrate inclusion.
The exhibition began by looking at some of the many projects undertaken to promote diversity and inclusion throughout the year as well as exploring what Diversity, Equity and Inclusion mean to us as staff and students.
In the main exhibition, Matt Jerram’s Pride photographs are a festival of colour and joy. In fact, this exhibition would not have been possible without the extreme kindness, enthusiasm and positive support of photographer and producer Matt Jerrams. A year ago, while working on our strategy and plan, we approached Matt about the use of some of his photography on the off-chance we may get permission to use the odd image. We were blown away when, without hesitation, he gave us access to his Pride series. Just incredibly generous. We are genuinely touched and can not thank him enough.” - Mr.
James Tuffs and Lyulf Tuffs Video“The society run by co-chairs Joona Kim and Seobin (Rayne) Lee has tackled everything from learning practical techniques to make medications e.g. aspirin to making exploding touch powder. Recently, we ran a new initiative drive to educate and promote the safe use and proper disposal of medications. Our senior school nurse Min Ji Jeon visited Halla East girls to explain why the proper use of medications is vital to ensure antibiotic courses were completed. In school, we set up a medical disposal unit as improper pharmaceutical waste disposal causes alarming consequences to the environment. Unwanted chemicals thrown away result in the contamination of water supplies for wildlife, as well as ourselves. Some drugs, specifically chemotherapy drugs (also known as antineoplastic drugs) disturb the reproduction and survival of many aquatic organisms. Steroids and hormones can have similar effects. Thus this campaign has significance in promoting the responsible disposal of medication in our community.” - Ms.
Shayna Coughlan. This week we are reminiscing about a Spanish cooking lesson where our Year 10 students learned how to cook tortilla de patatas.
“After a term of learning in the lesson about ingredients, healthy lifestyle, famous hispanic dishes and the benefits of the Mediterranean diet, it was only logical to culminate it with a hands-on cooking lesson and put to the test everything they learned.
The class was divided into two teams, the one making the tortilla with onions, and the other without onions. These are the two versions of the tortilla in Spain, and there is always the question of which one is better. We wanted to give an answer to that!
The clear winner was the tortilla with onions, which was devoured within minutes! The team that made this tortilla followed the recipe to perfection and used the right amount of onion, which added a delicious flavour and spongy texture. The other team’s tortilla was also scrumptious, but lacked the sweetness that only the onion can give.” Ms. Alejandra Lopez
Thank you to the generous PRG who donated 8 million wons worth of books to the Junior School Library. Our students will really benefit from this kind gesture!

Why did you pick this course and university?
Being a Christian has continually inspired me to pursue a life devoted to humanity. When I read about Médecins Sans Frontières, my eyes were opened to the altruism of these doctors in particular, but also all doctors who strive to comfort and ease su ering on a daily basis. I realised that being a doctor is a boundary where my ethical values and academic passions can converge.
How did NLCS Jeju prepare / help you?
I am first thankful for the devotion of my parents for supporting me in studying at NLCS Jeju. Besides academics, NLCS Jeju has fostered me to interact with people from diverse backgrounds and to realise how privileged I am. I was fortunate enough to meet teachers and friends who always encouraged me. Along with Sam Kim, I will forever cherish the support of Ms Bulut, Ms Bate, Mr Kim, Mr Canning, Ms Prichard, and the UGC team.
What are you most looking forward to when thinking of university?
Although I am aware of the e ortful years of study ahead of me, I am excited to study Medicine which is a subject that I truly enjoy. Also, I am looking forward to interacting with new people in a new environment.
What are your plans a er university?
A er my long journey of studying Medicine, I would spend more time with my family and people whom I cherish. Whether I work in the NHS or in the US, I want to be a part of Médecins Sans Frontières as a cardiothoracic surgeon. Hopefully, I wish for NLCS Jeju to invite me back to School a er my graduation.
The Senior School Sports Day took place yesterday and what a great day it was! Well done to all our students who took part and thanks to all those who cheered them on. You all showed such great sportsmanship. More photos
Thanks to Mr. Pua for sharing the photos from the Year 13 farewell Volleyball and Basketball CCA which took place at the start of June. A great send off, you will all be missed!
If he wasn’t busy enough, Mr. Pua also hosted a family badminton tournament for our staff, students and their families. Such a lovely, fun filled day! Thank you to everyone who joined us.
“NLCS Jeju showcased their remarkable sporting prowess at the U11 FOBISIA Games, leaving a lasting impression on the competition. This prestigious event held in Thailand brought together 7 top sporting schools in Asia. NLCS Jeju earned their place in FOBISIA’s top group for schools with exceptional sporting achievements. Throughout the competition, the NLCS students displayed outstanding sportsmanship, talent and passion in athletics, football, swimming, and tee-ball.
In swimming and athletics, NLCS Jeju secured gold, silver and bronze medals in many events. Their hard work and determination shone through as they competed against strong opponents, showcasing the depth of NLCS Jeju’s sporting talent. In football, NLCS Jeju demonstrated their competitive spirit and impressed with their skills. The Girls B team emerged victorious, claiming 1st place, while the Girls A team secured a commendable 3rd place. The Boys B team showcased their prowess with an excellent 2nd place finish, and the Boys A team achieved a respectable 4th place, just missing out on a bronze medal.
The children’s dedication and relentless pursuit of excellence were outstanding, and they represented the school with pride, and we are immensely proud of their incredible achievements. This will undoubtedly inspire future generations of athletes at NLCS Jeju.” Ms. Sophie Perry
A huge thank you to the parents who travelled and supported the competition and our excellent teachers, Ms. Sophie Perry, Ms. Miriam Davies, Ms Geun Lee, Mr. Andy Cronin, and Mr. Jeremy Freeman. Your dedication and guidance have been instrumental in the success of the U11 FOBISIA Games. More photos
Here are some key dates from our CAC.
A national holiday in the Canadian province of Quebec and celebrated by French Canadians worldwide, especially in Canada and the United States.
HAJJ (June 26 to July 1)
The Hajj is an annual pilgrimage to Mecca that all Muslims must take once in their lives if they are physically and financially able to do so. Mecca is in Saudi Arabia and is considered Islam’s holiest city. The pilgrimage ends with Eid-al Adha on 2 July.
Helen Keller’s Birthday (27 June):
This day celebrates the birth of Helen Keller, an individual who was both blind and deaf. She was a leading humanitarian in the 20th century as well as one of the co-founders of the ACLU
Other birthdays in June and July include Thurgood Marshall (a champion for civil rights), Nelson Mandela (anti-apartheid activist) and Frida Kahlo (an artist celebrated for her attention to Mexican and indigenous culture and by feminists for her depiction of the female experience and form).
St Swithin’s Day (15 July)
A day on which, according to folklore, the weather for a subsequent period is dictated. In popular belief, if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, it will rain for 40 days, but if it is fair, 40 days of fair weather will follow.
We are extremely proud of all our students and we love to keep in touch and find out what they are up to after graduating from NLCS Jeju. Our ONLJ (Old North Londoners of Jeju) is an active and supportive community, guided by our Alumni and Development Manager, Ms. Shin.
Thank you to Skylar Shen who shared their story this week.
If you studied at NLCS Jeju and you want to share your news with us, please email Ms. Shin (alumnioffice@nclsjeju.kr). We cannot wait to hear from you.
Why did you choose the major?
Many would say that theatre is the most evanescent of all art forms and I wholeheartedly agree, the same cast can perform the same play every night and it’s still going to be a new experience for both the performers and audience, which fascinates me to a great extent. To me, human lives are also as ephemeral as a theatre production, each character I get to play is another chance to live another life no matter how close or distant it is from my own self. Acting is a process of investigation and recreation, and seeing how the result of the process can influence the audience to empathise with my journey is truly rewarding.
How is College life so far?
I’m beyond grateful for my college experience. As an Asian actor in the US, I was first nervous about my standing in the theatre community, but CalArts accepted me with open arms. The community here consists of artists from all disciplines of arts and all cultures, and they’ve supported me through my accomplishments and hardships. I had tremendous growth not only from the intensive classes that helped expand my skills, but also curricular productions that I was honoured to be a part of. Some of my CalArts School of Theatre works include “When Five Years Pass”, “Bacchae” “Men on Boats” “Something in the Air” and “The Lemming E ect”.
What are you doing now?
“Fishbowl Sonata”, an original play that I wrote and directed just had its world premier at the CalArts Co eehouse Theatre with the support of the community, and I’m also producing it to be a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2023 lineup, where we get to share our works in an LA theatre to LA audience and critics! I’m also writing other original plays to work towards becoming a published playwright a er graduation, building a company of talented artists to produce other works, as well as getting into film acting!
Memorable moments at NLCS Jeju
I have profound memories of theatre productions that I was in, including “The Kitchen”, “Two” and “A Christmas Carol”, these experiences opened my eyes to the world of theatre and also helped me to bond with fellow cast members, which led to long lasting friendships beyond graduation until this day. I’m also appreciative of the variety of classes and activities NLCS Jeju has o ered. For example, I did IB Philosophy and the class influenced the core of my artistic pursuit, as I grew passionate about writing and performing material that has deep philosophical themes.
“For 12 days throughout the summer, I’ll be cycling alone over 1500 km from Copenhagen to Paris, to raise money for Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders); a global charity that offers medical aid to the underprivileged.
The catch is, I’m not a cyclist. Years have passed since I last biked, and especially coming from a sprinter background, I am completely new to the game of endurance cycling. Yet, I chose this physically and mentally strenuous journey out of sympathy for the millions of vulnerable and unprotected individuals whom Medecins Sans Frontieres seek to help. To understand the plight of displacement by actively removing myself from my comfort zone, hence the slogan—couch to 1500 km.
I’ll be documenting my journey via a digital diary on instagram. You can check my progress on Strava, which will be linked to my Just Giving page. By the end, I plan on creating a short documentary about the journey I can send back to NLCS Jeju.
Your contribution will enable Medecins Sans Frontieres to continue operating their rescue ships, homeless shelters, minor protection services, and so much more. Further, your interest towards the charity and the issues it deals with would motivate me to finish my journey with determination, knowing that it has acted as a beacon of awareness. For those new to Just Giving, I don’t receive any of the donations. They go directly to Medecins Sans Frontieres. You are not giving to me. You are giving to MSF. Thank you.
Any advice on cycling would also be greatly appreciated. Additionally, since I plan on buying a bike in Copenhagen, advice in that regard would also be helpful to my journey.” Woon Lee (class of 2023).
On 7 July Mr. Dorian Brown will cycle from Land’s End (South West England) to John O’Groats (North East Scotland). The ride will take 7 days and cover approximately 230km a day. Mr. Brown is raising money to purchase 3 specialist monitors for a neonatal intensive care unit at a hospital in the UK (where his premature nieces were taken care of). Here are some details If you would like to sponsor Mr. Brown and contribute to this life saving cause.

We were delighted to discover this week that we have been shortlisted for a World’s Best School Prize. NLCS Jeju is one of 10 schools that have been shortlisted in the ‘Community Collaboration 2023’ category. Our shortlisting focuses on all the amazing work that our students and staff do via the many service Bryants we undertake that support the local Jeju community and beyond. The number of hours that our students have committed over the years and the large amount of money raised is testament to the selfless and generous nature of our students.
The top three will be announced in September with the winning ceremony taking place in October. We are crossing our fingers but we are already pleased to be shortlisted and for our students and staff to have the recognition they deserve.
As part of our Arts Festival, students in their House (Y7-11) had to respond to the theme ‘Secrets and Discoveries’ by creating a piece of art on a large roll canvas using acrylic paints, whilst referencing an artist. The work is incredible and will be framed and displayed in the House areas for us all to enjoy.
We had 27 excellent entries to the calendar competition. We had a difficult time shortlisting the top 5, there were beach scenes, photos of Halla and pictures of beautiful Jeju nature. The top 5 were shared with the Principal and we are delighted to announce that the winner of the calendar competition is Ms. Hyunjin Jo (PA to the VPs). Well done to the four runners up, Mr. David Lock (Events Officer), Ms. Aekyung Gwan (Trips Assistant), Mira McKeogh (Learning Assistant) and Yujin Kang (HR Officer). We look forward to sharing the calendar with everyone in the new year. Thank you to everyone who entered.
