TOP NEWS ANTI BULLYING WEEK SERVICE AWARDS YEAR 11 OPTIONS EVENT FRENCH AND SPANISH ENRICHMENT WEEK

PRINCIPAL’S LETTER Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju

We are very proud of the work of our Year 13 students who have organised their time and so effectively prepared their Oxbridge and medicine applications with their support of the UGC to submit these by the deadline of Monday 9 October. A tremendous amount of time and effort has gone into this all while working on their IB Diploma Programme and of course working to meet further deadlines for applications across the world. Applications for university take an enormous amount of preparation and where there are interviews and tests involved as well from these such as the BMAT for medicine the preparation and work will continue until decisions are released. As will be evident from the newsletter the students across the School have been experiencing many beyond the curriculum opportunities through further academic enrichment and student led initiatives. This has given the Schools many opportunities to participate in and discover their passions in a number of ways often led by the societies and the departments. Such has been seen in the European languages opportunities this week. We continue as do all schools and society in general to be focused on wellbeing and it was so with high levels of student participation and all led by student bodies such as SWAG with their contributions to the work on bullying awareness and how to counter this.

Yours sincerely,

Lynne Oldfield Principal

The Main Event

Here are the biggest stories from around the School this week.

FRENCH AND SPANISH ENRICHMENT WEEK This week our languages department entertained us all with some very fun and exciting activities, which helped our students see just how much fun learning a new language can be and how many doors are opened when able to speak other languages fluently. When learning is fun there is a greater chance of remembering, being motivated and capturing a person’s attention. This was certainly done with the French and Spanish Karaoke, Eiffel Tower building competition and Day of the Dead mask decoration. Thank you - Gracias - Merci to all our Language teachers and students for arranging such a great week for us to enjoy! More pictures

IB OPTIONS FAIR AND INFORMATION SESSION

Selecting IB options is exciting but can be a daunting prospect for both our students and parents, but with such an informative information session and IB options fair taking place last week (for both parents and students) we hope that all our Year 11 students have a greater understanding of the options available to them and how these options can support their future plans. Each department created an interactive, informative and engaging stand for our students. With so many choices available, we know that our students will find the best fit for them with exceptional support from our dedicated and experienced IB teachers.

YEAR 7 PARENT CONSULTATIONS - IN PERSON Last week we hosted our first parent consultation, in person, on campus. Due to COVID we have not had in person parent consultations for a while and we were pleased to see so many Year 7 parents join us. A great event where parents could meet and speak to their child’s class teacher, we hope everyone found the event useful and we look forward to hosting more in person consultations in the future. “It has been wonderful to welcome our Year 7 parents and students to our first face to face Parent Consultation of the new academic year. A fantastic opportunity to discuss student progress and how we can work together to support their learning.” - Ms Wilson, Vice Principal (Academic).

NLCS Jeju Awards and Achievements 25TH NATIONAL YOUTH SERVICE AWARDS

Our Service Bryants and students have won more awards for their outstanding contribution to the community. Congratulations to the groups and individuals who selflessly dedicate themselves and their time to the benefit of others. You are an inspiration to us all.

2ND PRIZE - STELLA HAN

“As I entered high school, my severe atopic dermatitis worsened, making it difficult to stay in school. In particular, last winter, due to the dry weather, my skin peeled and oozed, so I had to miss school for a month. I gradually became reluctant to go out and meet people, but in continuing book-typing volunteer work, I was able to constantly read books, encounter a different world, and maintain a rhythm in life. By continuing my educational volunteer activities at the Jeju Aerospace Museum, I was able to maintain my connection to my academic interests. After losing my grandmother to leukaemia I started to look for things to support blood donation, realising its importance. Inviting the blood donation bus to the School seemed almost impossible at first, as the proposal was met with opposing views, due to it being unprecedented in other international schools. However, thanks to the teachers and friends who helped me, I was able to successfully host the blood donation bus invitation event and further contribute to making it a regular event. In the future, I plan to actively guide others to participate in various service activities, to further share the benefits that I’ve received from taking part.” Stella Han (Y13)

NLCS Jeju Awards and Achievements 3RD PRIZE - SAVE ABANDONED DOGS “Hello! We are the SAD (Save Abandoned Dogs), the community service Bryant that supports and raises awareness for abandoned dogs. Our group not only involves volunteering activities but also promotes adoption rather than purchasing pets. We improve the living conditions in the shelter and support abandoned dogs by donating pet supplies and the money collected on Casual Clothes day. We also raise awareness of the difficulties that abandoned dogs face. By encouraging people to adopt dogs rather than purchase them, we want to achieve our ultimate goal of reducing the number of abandoned dogs in Jeju. Anyone interested in saving abandoned dogs, please make time to visit the shelter or donate money to support abandoned dogs.” Ellie Kim: “We are so glad that we were rewarded for what we did sincerely. However, since our ultimate goal is not getting an award but reducing the number of abandoned dogs, we will not stop until the end. We hope more people show interest in this issue and help them with us.” Kelly Park: “While preparing for this competition, we were able to reflect on the changes that our Bryant brought not only on campus but also in the local community. Additionally, looking at the activities of other awardees, I once again realised that students can have a positive impact on society in many ways through volunteer work. I hope that more and more students recognise the influence they could have on society and participate in these volunteer activities to improve social problems and help their neighbours.”

NLCS Jeju Awards and Achievements 4TH PRIZE - STEW “Our community service Bryant, known as STEW Bryant (Save the Empty Walls), aims to transform bare walls into visually appealing artworks. We believe in the power of art of brightening up neighbourhoods and adding a sense of vibrancy to the environment. We paint murals that incorporate local themes such as Jeju’s traditions, history, and cultural values, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among community members. Last year, our service Bryant reached out to Jeju’s residents who wanted to promote their living environment. Through a blend of creativity and communal engagement, our Bryant will continue to encourage mural art culture that mirrors the island’s distinctive identity.” Giryeong Luna Kim: “Participating in this competition has granted me the privilege of serving our community, and I eagerly anticipate the continuation of our collaborative endeavours aimed at effecting positive change. I am willing to continue contributing to our community through service and dedication.” Jian Ann Han: “Through STEW Bryant, I truly experienced how small actions can lead to meaningful changes within our community. Moving forward, I am eager to continue collaborating with local residents and artistic talents at our school to further enrich and transform our community into a beautiful place.”

4TH PRIZE - CATHERINE KIM

“I am grateful for this achievement - my work at Animal Rights Enterprise, running donation projects and fundraisers for animals in and out of Jeju Island not only gave me a sense of fulfilment but also helped me create fun memories throughout my years at NLCS!” Catherine Kim

TABLE TENNIS SUCCESS i-LEAGUE On 1 October nine Junior school students enthusiastically participated in the i-League table tennis competition held in the GEC. Among the three teams representing our School, one came third-place - Siyoon Sung, Jaeyoon Park and Ye Jun Kim - Congratulations! We would also like to extend our commendations to all the students who were selected to represent our School in this fixture. Their dedication and hard work are truly commendable.

DEI COORDINATOR

Ms. Alex Gellersen has been appointed as the School’s Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Coordinator. This is a very important role and we caught up with Ms. Gellersen to find out more. Why did the School create this role? “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is quite a long title, in simple terms the purpose of this role is to improve belonging. Everyone deserves to feel that they belong in our community. Part of our School aims include building a caring and internationally-minded community. We already had incredible teams working on this at NLCS Jeju, for example our Emotional Guidance Counsellors, Learning Support Team and Translation Department, as well as student groups like the Cultural Awareness Committee and Equity Society. This new role involves working with those existing efforts to ensure we have an overall vision and supporting more staff, parents and students to contribute to the School’s inclusion goals.” Why did you apply for this position? “My personal background as a female physicist is the reason I became interested in DEI work, Physics has the most significant gender gaps of all the sciences. At university I was one of the 10% of women on my course, being different felt very uncomfortable and I questioned if I belonged in Physics. I had lecturers and friends that helped me to feel that I deserved to be there, and to feel included. Because of this experience I know how important it is to feel that you belong, and to feel welcome in a community. Since then I have spent a lot of time learning about improving outcomes and inclusion for all marginalised groups in society, including ensuring schools are safe for LGBTQ+ people, accessible for those with disabilities and that people are able to make progress and achieve their goals regardless of their backgrounds. I was extremely fortunate to receive training from Diverse Educators who taught me about how to be an effective leader in this area and gave me a global network of leaders to look up to. This training empowered me to apply for the role when it was advertised.” What experience can you bring to this role? “In my first few years at NLCS Jeju I volunteered as part of the DEI working party and as the lead teacher for the Cultural Awareness Committee. As part of this we reviewed relevant School policies and made recommendations to the Senior Team, for example we recommended the removal of gendered language from the uniform policy.

Other News Last year I organised my first ‘Diversity Week’ with the student group - Cultural Awareness Committee, where we as a School community celebrate all our differences. This was an amazing opportunity to invite guest speakers, and members of our parent community to share their experiences. This role also includes a lot of professional development and workshops with staff, parents and students. I have experience leading these with small groups but I am still working on projecting my voice as effectively as Mr Scargill!” What are your plans for this academic year and beyond? “Because this is a new role, I am really excited to create new connections and build relationships with the staff that already do this work in our School. A new initiative I have developed is supporting our volunteer staff ‘DEI Champions’ to develop their understanding and implement positive changes in their area of expertise. I am continuing to work with the Cultural Awareness Committee, but we have expanded to a much larger group as well as having an hour a week in our CCA to work on our projects. We will be running some small events throughout the school year - keep an eye out for updates in the newsletter. We have already worked with the history department to celebrate Black History Month Thank you Mr Löser! In the future I would like to develop a volunteer group of parents who are interested in improving belonging for everyone at NLCS Jeju. If you are interested in speaking to me, or have any feedback please email me at agellersen@ nlcsjeju.kr.” You can read about this month’s cultural highlights in our regular feature provided by the Cultural Awareness Committee, later in this edition.

HANGUL DAY

HANGUL DAY

On Monday we celebrated Hangul Day with a variety of activities including drawing King Sejong (the inventor of Hangul), spelling quizzes, making 3D models and decorating our palms with Hangul. This is an important commemoration as Hangul was invented to create an equal world for all where everyone’s right to read and write are respected.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

Other News “In October we celebrate Black History Month which was established to recognise and celebrate the invaluable contributions of black people through the ages. At NLCS Jeju we pride ourselves as being openminded with a view to encouraging tolerance and an appreciation of the contributions of various peoples and cultures to mankind. With this in mind, the Cultural Awareness Committee and the History Department collaborated in the creation of a Black History Month gallery. Members of the NLCS Jeju community were asked to identify black people who they admire from history and who they believe made valuable contributions to society. Portraits of the Black heroes and heroines were displayed in the corridor of the Senior School.” - Mr. Dylan Löser.

UKMT SENIOR MATHS CHALLENGE Year 11 and 12 students took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge last week. This long running competition is one of the largest international maths competitions for Senior Schools in the world with over 700,000 students taking part each year. The competition paper is full of thought provoking problems that stimulate interest in maths, and of course a UKMT certificate always gives a boost to University applications. Good luck to all our students who took part. A question from last year’s paper is shown below - see how you would get on! The hare and the tortoise had a race over 100m, in which both maintained constant speeds. When the hare reached the finish line, it was 75m in front of the tortoise. The hare immediately turned around and ran back towards the start line. How far from the finish line did the hare and tortoise meet? A: 54 B: 60 C:64 D:66 E:72

SOSO DOG SHELTER CCA “In the heart of our community, a remarkable group of students has risen to the occasion, demonstrating extraordinary compassion and dedication. When the beloved owner of a local dog shelter was unexpectedly hospitalised for a month, these students selflessly took it upon themselves to bridge the gap in care. Stepping into the shelter’s daily operations, these young volunteers have not only offered their time but have shown immense love and kindness to the furry inhabitants. With tender care and endless patience, they ensure the well-being, comfort, and happiness of the dogs, just as the shelter’s owner would have. Their commitment and enthusiasm are nothing short of impressive, inspiring all who witness their tireless efforts. These students exemplify the true essence of community service, showcasing maturity beyond their years and a genuine desire to make a positive impact. The school community stands united in admiration and pride for these young individuals, recognizing them as beacons of empathy and selflessness in our midst. Their willingness to stand up and help during a challenging time reflects the values of compassion and kindness that we hold dear, reminding us all that acts of generosity can truly make a difference in the lives of both humans and our four-legged companions.” - Ms. Lindsay Lee

THE ARTS

CERAMICS WORKSHOP We believe in lifelong learning at NLCS Jeju and here are the photos to prove it. Our talented Art Technician, Yoon Lee, led a session introducing ceramic techniques, using the School’s newly purchased pottery wheels, to the rest of the staff in our Art Department. Our students also have the opportunity to learn this exciting skill as part of their curriculum - we look forward to seeing their creations soon.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION DUKE OF EDINBURGH “Half of our new Year 10 Duke of Edinburgh International Award cohort took their first Adventurous Journey this weekend and camped at Gimnyeong in the north-east of Jeju. Pastoral care doesn’t have to be reactive - it can be proactive. Pastoral care doesn’t happen through policy alone - we have to get out there and make it happen. That’s what our Beyond the Curriculum team do at NLCS, Jeju. The International Award isn’t just about soft-skill development. It’s about making friends and building relationships. It’s about enjoyment and feeling good.” - Mr Chaddock.

FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM

CELEBRATION ANNOUNCEMENT

Yifei (Nancy) Gao 12WHE represented her home country, China, and won 1st place in the 2023 Hebei Youth Fencing Championships, competition event: individual teenager’s foil, that took place on October 2nd 2023. We are really proud of her achievement.

MEET THE YEAR 12 TUTORS - MR. DAVID MOORE David is hard at work doing his 1:1 sessions with his tutee. ‘I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a Sixth Form tutor. I have moved to NLCS Jeju from Qatar, where I taught history and sociology. Furthermore, I have been at NLCS Jeju since August. I am a specialist in (history and sociology, and I have experience in leading Sixth Form tutor groups in my previous school, Doha College. I enjoy chess, scuba diving, hiking and sailing. Currently, I am studying ancient Greek and Byzantine History for my PhD at Edinburgh University. I try to bring these subjects into my lessons when the opportunity arises.’

FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM

EYES ON THE SIXTH FORM PASTORAL TEAM

Ms. Minic is a busy bee! She is either aspiring new psychologists in her classroom, or chasing up pastoral issues with a big smile around the Sixth Form. She is rushed off her feet, but she managed to find time to support the European Languages Enrichment Week by building her own spaghetti and marshmallows version of the La Tour Eiffel. Thank you for your hard work, Ms. Minic!

FOCUS ON YEAR 13 The Year 13 students are very busy with their university applications, and their academic commitments; but, they are still following their passions. Derek Kim Y13APA is our fencing pride, he has been managing his demanding academic calendar, and his passion. We are so proud of his long list of national and international prizes. Derek is humble, and always has a smile on his face. How does he do it? ‘Time management was key to excel both in fencing and academics. It is impossible to manage both at high levels; it is important to invest on only one for a certain amount of time, then focus on the next after. But this does not mean to let go of the previous task afterwards. Going back and forth with athletics and academics, this pattern is to be repeated, day after day, uninterrupted in any way.’ We look forward to seeing him compete for Korea on the bigger stage soon! Fighting!

FOCUS ON SIXTH FORM Lahee Hong Y13APA is an avid reader, we always see her discussing a novel, or deep in thought considering the protagonists of her current book. Her current book of choice is Imagined Communities by Benedict Anderson. ‘I continue to read even during the busiest time of the year because they are always a source of inspiration, motivation, and pure joy. The book I am currently reading, Imagined Communities, introduces to me a new approach to nations as a part of the sociological landscape and the emergence of nationalism within the scope of history through an interdisciplinary approach encompassing history, philosophy, and even multicultural literature.’ Lahee’s passion for literature is infectious, look out for the next book she is reading around the Sixth Form Centre!

Eddie Min Y13RMN has always been interested in Computer Sciences, and he has won several awards. Most recently, he won a silver award by the America Computer Science League. Eddie looks forward to getting involved with AI in the future. ‘I feel delighted to see the culmination of my effort towards Computer Science. Also, I would like to thank Mr Singh and the CS department for organising and supporting the competition.’ We see a very bright future for him in this field.

ONLJ We are extremely proud of all our students and we love to keep in touch and find out what they are up to after graduating from NLCS Jeju. Our ONLJ (Old North Londoners of Jeju) is an active and supportive community, guided by our Alumni and Development Manager, Ms. Shin. Thank you to Jinhwa Lee who shared their stories this week. If you studied at NLCS Jeju and you want to share your news with us, please email Ms. Shin (alumnioffice@nclsjeju.kr). We cannot wait to hear from you.

ONLJ Profile Jinhwa Lee Class of 2018 Georgetown University Regional and Comparative Studies What led you to choose this particular major? As someone with diverse interests spanning multiple academic fields, I did not want to confine myself to a single area of study. Choosing an interdisciplinary major that gave me the flexibility in designing my own curriculum allowed me to explore different fields, including language, politics, sociology, culture, and economics of different regions around the world. Coming out of college, I also wanted to possess a unique skill set that can be transferrable to a variety of settings. My chosen major helped me hone my skills in research, writing, communication, and teamwork, which I thought were highly adaptable skills appealing to prospective employers. How was your university experience? Attending a school located in the heart of Washington DC, the capital city of the United States, gave me unparalleled access to historical landmarks, world-class museums, exciting outdoor spaces, and an array of exceptional restaurants. Exploring these places on weekends or after class enabled me to unwind from my studies and create memories that I never could have otherwise. Given the school’s diverse community, I was also able to interact and connect with people from different backgrounds. Furthermore, I had the privilege of learning from dedicated faculty members, some of whom I still stay in touch with, who not only offered academic support but also provided invaluable insights in pursuit of my future goals and aspirations. What are you currently engaged in? What motivated you to pursue this specific career path? In the future, I want to go to law school and work as a lawyer in the States. I chose this career path because a legal education opens the door to a wide range of career and global opportunities and the potential for cross-cultural experiences. In the meantime, I am working as an LSAT instructor in Seoul, helping students achieve their dream of going to US law schools. Also, the NLCS Jeju alumni office has kindly accepted my offer to mentor some of the prospective students interested in a legal career or applying to US universities, so do visit the office if you would like to connect with me. Share some cherished memories from your time at NLCS Jeju I believe that NLCS Jeju stands out as a school committed to fostering a truly tight-knit and supportive community. During my time at the School, I took part in a lot of activities like athletics, basketball, orchestra, and academic clubs, which allowed me to bond with my peers and teachers. On weekends, I would hang out with my friends to explore different parts of the beautiful Jeju Island, including some popular tourist attractions and great local restaurants and cafés, which added excitement and vibrancy to my time at the School.

BEE UPDATE

... AND FINALLY

... AND FINALLY

BEE UPDATE

As the weather is cooling and we are heading towards winter it is time to prepare our bees for cooler climes. Our Beekeeping staff and students met to undertake a number of very important tasks. All three colonies were fed, the food store in each hive was checked to ensure there is enough for winter and the strength of the colonies were checked. The bees have been such a welcome addition to our NLCS Jeju family and it is great to see so many community members taking care of them but also learning so much from having these wonderful creatures on campus.
