North London Collegiate School Jeju
Dear Parents, Students, Staff and Friends of NLCS Jeju
What an exciting few weeks we have had. Students all over the school have been actively involved in activities! We have Junior School students performing for their lunchtime recitals as well as their participation in Enrichment weeks. It has been inspiring to see the children engaged even at the youngest age in academic enrichment activities. In both schools Diversity Week was a resounding success with all students participating in a range of events and we were able to welcome into the School some illustrious guests from the Embassies as well as the community for lectures and seminars with students. As usual the students have also been active in sports events and competitions with tremendous success.
The student leadership in events such as Diversity Week is of the highest quality and they have motivated and reached out to our community with clear messages. Their commitment to DEI (Diversity Equity and Inclusion) is inspiring and their work is clear from our new Charter which articulates NLCS Jeju’s commitment to DEI. Student leadership is crucial in all our sports teams as well as our societies as seen in the enrichment week plans. We thank all the teachers for their roles in guiding and supporting our students in this.
At NLCS Jeju we have hundreds of students who play a key role in the Performing Arts, be it in school productions or orchestral and other musical events. All this takes commitment and enthusiasm and our students exhibit this in bucketfuls! I have watched the cast, production teams and orchestra for the Senior School Production of ‘ the Wiz’ develop, grow and learn to collaborate over the term and I, like many, feel fortunate to then be able to watch the production in all its glory! If you have not yet seen it, the last opportunity is tonight at 7pm. I am conscious that over these last few weeks of term students are tiring after a long term but around us we still have the energy and commitment to participate in so many events. We all look forward to the winter concerts in both schools over the next couple of weeks.
We look forward to welcoming many of you into school over these final few weeks to celebrate the achievements of NLCS Jeju students.
Yours sincerely,
Lynne Oldfield Principal

DIVERSITY WEEK
What a wonderful week, packed full of exciting and informative activities and events. A massive thank you to everyone who helped arrange such a brilliant week for us.
Why Do We Celebrate?
“Diversity is central to the CAC’s mission of creating a welcoming environment for all members of the NLCS community. Diversity Week reflects the CAC’s belief in the power of experiencing new cultures and worldviews, and enables us to grow in our understanding and support of one another. The more diversity and inclusion we embrace, the more unique perspectives and bright ideas we share.” - CAC. More pictures.

The Main Event
A message of thanks from Ms. Alex Gellersen - “The CAC would like to extend our utmost gratitude to all the guests who helped make Diversity Week the experience it was.
Ms. Lucinda Walker from the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea gave an insightful lecture on how to thrive while studying and working overseas, which ‘helped put into perspective the unique rewards and challenges of international living’ (Hai Kim Y11).
Mr Daniel Ahifon & Co. awed KS3 students with their energetic performance, which was ‘an enjoyable departure from forms of dance I knew, into dances of different cultures and origins. Being able to interact with the music also made the performance fun!’ (Alynn Kim Y9). Dance students also appreciated the cultural dance workshops: ‘it was unlike any dancing I’ve ever done before and it was very exhilarating to dance with all their cultural instruments’ (Georgina Downes Y11).
Deputy Ambassador Gareth Weir from the British Embassy set the bar for next year’s Diversity Week with his poll on diversity and inclusion within the school. He answered questions about diversity in the context of diplomatic work, and gave students food for thought with his witty adages. ‘His dance-party slogan—’ according to Mr Weir, diversity is getting an invitation to the party, while inclusion is being invited to dance ‘—helped me look at diversity and inclusion in a completely different way from before’ (Michelle Choi Y11).
Ms Jamila Benson’s workshops with KS3 art classes made inroads in promoting understanding of creativity and mental health, ‘two subjects I came to appreciate much more deeply thanks to Ms Benson’s insights on how one could influence the other’ (Dahye Lim Y9).
Dr Yunhee Choi, a researcher from Sookmyung Women’s University, discussed the importance of Cultural Diversity education for young people in her talk. ‘It was fascinating to hear about the approaches of different nations to the intentional teaching of intercultural skills’.
Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Diversity Week. We hope the experience has helped you appreciate the importance of adopting open-minded attitudes towards people of all backgrounds!”

ASIST TRAINING
Milestone training delivered at NLCS Jeju
Livingworks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is considered to be the ‘gold standard’ in training for members of the general community for suicide intervention. NLCS Jeju is now the first school in Korea to have its own faculty members, Mr. Richard Washington and Mr. James Caudle, trained to deliver ASIST here in South Korea in English. The inaugural two day training course was completed on Friday and Saturday 11-12 November for twelve members of NLCS Jeju’s Boarding and Emotional Guidance Counselling teams. The training was met with ringing endorsements from participants. Most importantly, the completion of this training continues to advance the School’s agenda of striving to destigmatize open discussion about suicide, address suicide as a community issue and also to contribute to the wider task of making the world suicide safer by acting locally: ‘Think global, act local’. The commitment of NLCS Jeju faculty members to this training and the sharing of their existing knowledge and expertise with one another highlighted the quality of the teachers we have here. It also underscored the importance of the strategic approach to safeguarding professional development put in place by our VP Staff Relations and Designated Safeguarding Lead, Dan Coll.
NLCS Jeju has been shortlisted for an ISAward within the safeguarding category for ASIST training. We are pleased to inform you that more staff undertook training recently.

BLOOD DONATION INITIATIVE: SAVE LIVES - OTHERS, OURS, YOURS
In collaboration with the Korean Red Cross, on the 10 December a Blood Donation Bus will be coming to NLCS Jeju Senior School to provide easier access to its facilities for blood donation. This initiative aims to proliferate the accessibility of the donation centres for potential donors who were unable to donate blood due to the lack of time or lack of transit. Currently, the technology is such that blood cannot be artificially made to replace real blood, and donating blood is the only way to save a life of a patient in need of transfusion.
We ask for your support and participation in our inaugural Blood Donation Initiative which will bring a remarkable opportunity and a rewarding experience to the NLCS Jeju Community.
Thank you to Stella Han (Y12) for bringing this project to fruition. Click for more information - Korean (https://bit.ly/blooddonationk ) and English (https://bit.ly/blooddonatione ).
Sixth Form students and all staff (faculty and support) can sign up here (https://bit.ly/bldosignup ).

NEXON TRIP
Our Year 7 students visited the Nexon Computer Museum in Jeju City as part of their Computer Science class, with the aim of developing their knowledge of computer hardware, they all enjoyed a tour of the Museum with an experienced guide, had an opportunity to make their own mouse using computer hardware and undertook a number of tasks created by our teachers.
Everyone had a great time and learnt so much! Thank you to Mr. Tajvir Singh and the Computer Science team for arranging the trip and sharing photos.
KOMODO
Wellbeing is a priority at NLCS Jeju for all our students and the community. We are pleased to announce that we will be working with Komodo Wellbeing (https://www. komodowellbeing.com/ ).
Mr. Richard Washington says “by using Koodo, our students will build their understanding of self-reflection, and the impact and importance that their wellbeing has on their lives. They will develop resilience, and become more adaptable to the on-going challenges that our modern and ever-changing world will reveal in the future.
Komodo allows us to enhance the overall school experience for a child’s needs by using informed data to drive our ‘Seeds for Success’ social emotional learning programmes within the Junior School. One of North London Collegiate’s three pillars is Pastoral Care and Komodo allows wellbeing to be at the forefront of a child’s education and development”
