Our Values

Our house, Geomun, have developed positive morals and values. Achievement led us to success, but risk taking and failure gave us lessons. We have experienced failure and tough times when things didn’t work, but we've learned from them and improved every time. Perseverance is deeply embedded in our house spirit and we keep trying regardless of the activity. Geomun takes risks and stands out even when there are obstacles. Geomun shows courage, grit and determination in every house competition, but we also participate with a sense of fun and kindness.

The House Leadership Team have been absolutely phenomenal this year. They have inspired, motivated, organised and communicated relentlessly and they really are the secret to the success of Geomun House. We are blessed to have some incredibly strong leaders across all of the year groups and they have fulfilled their roles with a sense of dedication and fun. Nothing seems 'phase' this group and they are often working under pressure and to tight deadlines. Whilst Charly and Ju Yeon are our overall House Captains, each member of the team has seized their opportunity to 'step up' and lead but has also recognized when to 'step back' and support. Miss Gulley and I are immensely proud of them.

All change! The month of April sees the next round of leadership applications and interviews as we form our leadership team in preparation for next year. I'm pleased to announce that Hailey Choi and Sean Park (both G10A) are our new House Captains and will lead Geomun House for the next 12 months. The selection process was grueling (application, video, hustings, interview) so these two have done incredibly well to emerge from a very strong field. Their first task is to assist with the selection process for the Vice Captain positions, which will be very tough given the depth of leadership talent that we have. Congratulations and good luck!

Reflecting on Success

The journey of preparing the house glee in fact started when I was in year 8. Back then, Ju Yeon and I were obsessed with imagining ourselves leading the house in the future - especially preparing for the house song and glee. We enjoyed hunting for the songs which we could possibly perform, and I could feel that “That’s how we do” would be a perfect fit for the glee as soon as the tune played. As a result, three years later, selecting the song and concept was easier than I thought. Preparing for the performance was all consuming. Choreographing, creating formations, planning lighting and buying costumes and props; nothing was easy, but it was a valuable and enjoyable experience and certainly helped to improve my leadership skills. The most difficult part was maintaining everyone’s attention during the rehearsal period so I tried to make the rehearsals as enjoyable as possible. Recalling, I believe this spirit of “having fun” was the key to our success as I knew that the energy we created would be transferred to the audience and judges. The happiness and sense of achievement when we won the competition was indescribable. Receiving some messages from Geomuners thanking me for creating such a wonderful memory was also incredibly fulfilling. It was only possible because every ‘dancer’ committed to the project and really demonstrated the spirit of being a Geomuner! It wasn’t a simple journey, but the whole process but I really hope that for the Geomun students it will be remembered as one of the core moments of their High School period.

Reflecting on Success

The House Singing Competition was a significant event that I wanted to excel in. Also, I was fully aware how this experience will affect individuals with their year in Geomun. Thus, it had to be a good one.

Preparation began three months before the competition, with Michael and I selecting "Supermarket Flowers" and rearranging it into a choir-friendly format. The key factor when choosing was how impactful it is when done as a choir. Leading such a large group was a new and challenging experience for me. One of the biggest hurdles was working with inexperienced singers, which led to difficulties in maintaining harmony during practice. We made multiple changes to the arrangement, striking a balance between performance impact and accommodating the singers' needs.

As the competition day approached, our rehearsals became more frequent and intense. We worked on perfecting the harmonies, dynamics, and emotions, ensuring that the performance would be a powerful and emotional experience for the audience. I could see the sense of unity and teamwork building among the members, and I was proud of how far we had come. Finally, the big day arrived. The school auditorium was filled with an excited audience, eager to witness the talents of each house. I was nervous and excited knowing that all our hard work was about to be put to the test. But deep down, I was confident in our performance. The moment came, and Geomun took the stage. As we began singing "Supermarket Flowers," I could feel the impact of the music on the audience. Our harmonies were beautiful and resonant, and the arrangement we had worked so hard to create was shining.

Our victory at the House Singing Competition was even more rewarding , as it demonstrated the power of unity and hard work. Special thanks must go to Michael, Yoonkyo, Minwoo, Juyeon, and other Y11 students who played a cru g me so kindly along the way.
