The five-stage process to clean air at Edmonton EcoPark’s new facility.
Primarily water vapour is released from the stack. KEY FACT
North London Waste Authority is building the UK’s most advanced facility to convert north London’s unrecyclable rubbish into energy. This prevents waste from rotting in landfill. High-tech cleaning equipment will make it one of the safest facilities in the world, operating under one of the most stringent permits issued by the Environment Agency.
After rubbish is incinerated to generate energy, the flue gas flows into the Reactor. Activated carbon captures heavy metals, dioxins, and furans; hydrated lime absorbs acidic gases.

The Baghouse Filter works like a vacuum cleaner to capture particulates.
Selective Catalytic Reduction reduces emissions of NOx to a level up to 60% lower than the minimum standards.
Emissions are dispersed at height which means that for the large majority of the year, the facility’s contribution to pollutant concentrations at ground level will be effectively zero.
5 The Wet/Dry Scrubber gives the gas a final clean.

Inside the stack, a system continually monitors emissions to ensure compliance with the Environment Agency permit.
