CONNECTIVY OF SPACE PURPOSE + USAGE Sitiawan has a very unique town planning layout compared to the big city town layout. Usually in the big city like KL, all the massive buildings are all accummulated at the centre of the city. There are not much of residential or green lands can be found at the big city when driving or walking around the big city. At Sitiawan, there are lots of human activities can be observed when driving along the main road to the township of Sitiawan. The development is started at the main road side then slowly to the side. The development of Sitiawan can be divided into 3 regions which are the shophouses, the residential and the plantations. Along the main road side, there are lots of shophouses lots and business going on such as the car workshops, restaurant, convenient shops and clinics. Besides of shophouses, education centres and religious centres are also mostly located at the roadside. Besides that, the residential houses are just located behind the shophouses. The connection between the shophouses and residential areas enhances the daily activities of the people. For example, it is easy for the locals to go to the convenient shops by just only walking without driving a long distance. After the residential areas, most of the lands are covered by massive oil palm plantations. It is very interesting when driving along the main road of Sitiawan because there are lots of different human activities are going on which makes the Sitiawan unique and different from the other township.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF NATURAL RUBBER
Sitiawan is a chinese Foochow town that located at Manjung, Perak. The name of 'Sitiawan' is meant faintful friend directly translated from the Malay words, Setia Kawan. Before the chinese, Sitiawan was occupied by Malays. The migration of Foochow was from the southern China by the colonial government. They were brought to the place for rice cultivation to bring up the local economic. Besides that, one of the reasons they were placed at Sitiawan was because they were forced to stay far away from tin mining areas. Most of the Foochow were under Christian organisation from last century until now. In the older days, all the locals were survived by doing rice grows, pig farms, animal crops and cash crops. They were just living a simple life. The incomes were just enough to raise a family.
Sitiawan was known as a natural rubber plantation area. The natural rubber plantation was encouraged and influenced by the British. Before the presence of natural rubber, the locals were just living a simple life and those incomes were only enough to raise up a small family. There were no extra money to spend. When the natural rubber arrived at Sitiawan, the locals were encouraged by giving them some offers. The rubber planters were given a free 3 acres land for the plantations. Besides that, the British government also paid a RM0.20 per rubber tree to the planter. They also promised the locals by helping them built a church building and orphanage houses which were very important for the Christian worshippers. After the presence of natural rubber, the locals started to change their lifestyles with wealth. Some of them even became a small holder and given a social position.
During World War I, the markets of natural rubber started to fall. The demands of natural rubber in global started to decrease. The first reason was the presence of synthetic rubber during the Industrialized Revolution. Instead of using natural rubber, those manufacturers started to use synthetic rubber to produce tyres, spareparts and more. It is because the rate of production is faster than harvesting the natural rubber and its cheaper. Besides that, the presence of oil palm plantation also caused the falling of natural rubber. Most of the planters had converted the rubber plantations to oil palm plantations because of the dropping price of natural rubber and large labour force needed for harvesting. It earned more and saved more man-power by doing oil palm plantations than rubber plantations. Furthermore, the highway that connects Sitiawan to lpoh and KL was one of the factors. Most of the youngsters had moved to cityto earn more and enjoy the modern lifestyles.
In current situation in Malaysia, the demand of natural rubber is still significant. We used to be the world exporter of natural rubber a century ago while currently we are the top 3 of natural rubber importer all around the world. We had imported estimatedly 1.01 million tonnes of natural rubber ( ~ RM 5.45 billion) from neighbouring countries every year. Natural rubber is still important as the synthetic rubber can't reach its quality. It is needed for medical purposes, biofuel, bioplastic and more. One of the reasons that bringing back the natural rubber plantation in Sitiawan is to appreciate the wealth that given to the locals. Without the extra incomes, the planters weren't have the ability to convert to oil palm plantations. Besides that, Sitiawan has the potential to grow rubber plantations as natural rubber tends to choose lands to grow. That's the reason of the decreasing of natural rubber in global. For the future development, modern way are implemented by designing mechanisms to harvest the natural rubber. This solves the needs of large labour force and fulfills the demands of natural rubber needed in Malaysia. Hope that the natural rubber in Malaysia can gain back its glory again as a world top exporter in global in the future. t-

THE LATICIFERS
Hevea Brasiliensis known as the most important rubber-producing tree worldwide. It is also named as Para Rubber Tree and Brazilian Rubber Tree. It is a flowering plant belonging to the spurge family Euphorbiaceae. It is also a deciduous tree which grow up to 20m in height with smooth and gray bark, dark green leaves, pale yellow flowers, and large capsule fruits. It is the most economically important member of the genus Hevea because the milky latex extracted from the tree is the primary source of natural rubber. This tree was first found in Brazilian Amazon. The natural rubbers produced are higher in strength, elasticity, flexibility, anti-corrosive and electrical insulations. Currently, the natural rubber is still significant as it has higher quality than the synthetic rubber. The amount of these rubber trees are decreasing. People now are searching for new suitable lands for plantations.
Hevea Brasiliensis is very useful not only by producing natural rubber, the other parts can also provide functions to our daily life. The seed contains a semi-drying yellow oil which is used to make paint, spray, soap making and varnishes. In Africa, the seed oils are used to make famine food. The trunk of the tree are is used to make interior furniture such as wall panelling, picture frames, cabinets and more. The timber should not be used for exterior purposes because it is only moderately durable when exposed to elements. Rubberwood in Malaysia are used to produce particle board, wood-cement board, and medium density fibreboard. It can also act as a charcoal for burning purposes. Rubberwood waste can be used as an excellent medium for the production of mushrooms especially oyster mushroom.
Hevea Brasiliensis is facing difficulties currently at all around the world. People are starting to find a new rubber source to solve the difficulties. There is threats to the rubber trees. In South American, the disease - leaf blight disease has attacked most of the rubber trees because the trees are less genetic variation and has low ability to fight against disease. When one tree gets sick, the other will get transmitted too. The presence of oil palm plantation becomes one of the biggest competitors against rubber plantation as it requires less labour force, easy harvest and fast growing. Besides that, the seeds and latex of the trees will cause allergy to the harvester. The biggest problem of the downfall of amount of rubber trees is there tend to choose land to grow. The trees are suitable to tropical climate countries. The trees can only grow on certain types of soils and must be a water-running constantly soils.
Laticifer is the most important part in all the rubber trees as it is the latex vessels that transport the latex. Laticifer is divided into two types which are non-articulated laticifer and articulated laticifer. Non-articulated laticifer is a straight tube and only occurs in baby rubber tree which doesn't contain latex in it. When rubber tree gets mature, non-articulated laticifers will grow into articulated laticifers. Articulated laticifer contains of lots of papillaes and conjugation tubes. Papillae is the main latex vessels while the conjugation tube is the connection between the papillaes. The more the conjugation tubes, the more the latex will produce when doing rubber tapping. It is because tapping will change the frequency of latex flowing in the tree. It will cut through not only the papillaes but also the conjugation tubes. Hence, a network structure is formed through the combination of papillaes and conjugation tubes which allows the higher yield of latex through the method of tapping.

INTRODUCTION The Laticifers are the network structures that formed by the combinations of the papillaes and conjugation tubes. The laticifer is very significant as it is the latex vessel that transport the latex in the trunk. Using the structures of the laticifers in the most commonly used rubber tree - Hevea Brasiliensis to symbolise the situation of Sitiawan due to the presence of natural rubber tree. In the drawing, the life cycle of a Hevea Brasiliensis tree is used to portrait the development of Sitiawan before and after the presence of natural rubber. Natural rubber had brought huge changes to Sitiawan such as the map of the Sitiawan, the lifestyle of the locals and the development of Sitiawan. The life cycle of a Hevea Brasiliensis are divided into three phase - the baby phase, the adult phase, and the old phase. The laticifers are categorised into two types which are non-articulated laticifers and articulated laticifers. Non-articulated laticifer is only found in the baby phase which is only an individual straight tube with no latex in it. Articulated laticifer is found when the tree got mature. It contains of papillaes and conjugation
tubes which form a network structure that contains latex. Latex is transported through this network structure. The situation of Sitiawan before the presence of natural rubber is described as a baby phase of rubber tree in the drawing. The development was small and only located along the roadside. There were only few lands were used for the rice growing, cash crops and animal farming to raise their own family. The lifestyle back then was boring and simple. When Henry Nicholas Ridley brought in the seeds of the rubber tree, the locals were influenced and encouraged by the government by providing them free lands, allowances, church and orphanage house building funds. During the adult phase, the laticifers are filled up with lots of latex and the conjugation tubes connects the papillaes more frequently to allow more latex produced. The natural rubber plantations brought the first glory to the locals and Sitiawan. The locals changed their lifestyle in a wealthy way and some of them even awarded with social positions. The old phase of the natural rubber symbolises the falling of the natural rubber in Sitiawan. During the Industrialized Revolution, the synthetic rubbers were
invented. People started to choose the synthetic rubbers because the production rate was faster and cheaper. The economic of natural rubber in global dropped rapidly. The people in Sitiawan started to convert natural rubber plantation to oil palm plantation as oil palm is cheaper and easier to harvest as well as the higher market price. The highway that connects Sitiawan to lpoh and KL caused the younger generations in Sitiawan moved to city for a better lifestyle. Currently, Malaysia is facing the problem of lacking natural rubber and importing the natural rubber from the neighbouring countries every year. We used to be the top world exported in a century ago but currently, we are the top three important in the world. The main reason of bringing back the natural rubber plantation to Sitiawan is appreciating the benefits that brought by the natural rubber plantation to the people and Sitiawan. Furthermore, Sitiawan has fulfilled all the growing requirement of natural rubber trees. The last reason is the demands of natural rubber in global are still high. We can provide enough natural rubber in Malaysia, at the same time it can also be one of the income source for the country by exporting it to the worldwide.
In conclusion, natural rubber plantation is still significant and needed more attentions in Malaysia. Modern way of harvesting the natural rubber should implement with the knowledge of traditional method to enhance the production of latex. Natural rubber brings us tonnes of benefits not only by the latex itself, the product of the trees can provide functions and job opportunities to the people. Hence, it's time to bring back the glory of Sitiawan and Malaysia that brought by the natural rubber. It's never too late to start but it's a failure if never start!
THE OLD TIME The Old Time is describing the lifestyle of people and the development of Sitiawan before the presence of natural rubber. Before natural rubber, the lifestyle of people at Sitiawan was very simple and boring. They earned money by doing rice growing, cash crops, and animal farming. Sometimes their incomes weren't enough to raise a family. Besides that, the development of Sitiawan back then was just built along the roadside. The houses were positioned far away from each others. There were also lots of undeveloped lands.
THE GROWTH OF RUBER The Growth of Rubber was describing how natural rubbers were brought to Sitiawan. Henry Nicholas Ridley - Father of Rubber in Malaysia, he brought the seeds from England to Malaysia. The seeds were originally found in Brazilian Amazon. When the seeds were delivered to Sitiawan, the government encouraged and influenced the locals to start natural rubber plantations. The locals were attracted by the allowances given. The government promised those planters by giving them free 3 acres land, funds for building church and orphanage houses, and paid RM 0.20 per tree planted. This made 80% of the people of Sitiawan had started their carreer as a rubber planter.
THE WEALTH Once doing natural rubber plantations, the locals and Sitiawan had achieved their first success. The rubber trees were mature enough to produce latex which allowed the planters to earn their first huge incomes. Soon, lots of rubber planters were improving their lifestyles into a luxury and enjoyable life. First, they used the incomes to improve their living shelter from a simple architecture timber building to a complicated building that made by brick and concrete. Some of them even became a shareholder for the rubber plantations. Some were also awarded with a social position by the government. They also gave funds to build church and improved the public facilities at Sitiawan.
THE CHANGING Most of the rubber planters were getting richer and richer. The development of Sitiawan were also getting better and better. There were lots of shophouses and public facilities were built. The amount of vehiculars on the road were increasing. Everyone started to enjoy the luxury lifestyles that brought by the natural rubber.
THE FALLING During WWI, natural rubber plantations in global were facing difficulties as the market demands of natural rubber were decreasing rapidly. The synthetic rubber were invented and slowly replaced the natural rubber during the Industrialized Revolution. People started to use synthetic rubber instead natural rubber because synthetic rubbers were cheaper and easier to produce. At Sitiawan, most of the rubber planters slowly converted natural rubber plantations to oil palm plantations due to market pricing. They used the incomes that earned from natural rubber to invest a new type of plantation. Besides that, the highway that connects Sitiawan to lpoh and KL was one of the factors that caused the falling of natural rubber. The younger generations moved to the city for a better and luxurious life. Currently, Malaysia is the top three importer of natural rubber in global. It is sad as our country used to be the top exporter natural rubber all around the world. Malaysia had imported estimatedly 1.01 tonnes million of natural rubber which costed around RM 5.45 billion from the neighbouring countries (Indonesia and Thailand) to develop the country. It has became one of the main expenses in Malaysia.
THE FUTURE The demands of natural rubber in global are still high and important as it has better quality than synthetic rubbers. Besides that, the amount of rubbers tree in the world is decreasing due to the characteristics of rubber tree that tends to choose place to grow. People are looking for a new place of grow the rubber trees. The main reason to bring back the rubber plantation at Sitiawan is to appreciate the rubber trees for bringing benefits and wealthy to the people of Sitiawan. Furthermore, Sitiawan has the suitable lands, climates, temperature and wind speed to grow rubber tree. For the future development of natural rubber, modern and traditional method of harvesting must implement with each others to enhance the production of latex. With enough of latex produced, we can fulfil the demands of natural rubbers needed in Malaysia. Besides that, natural rubbers can also export to the worldwide and become one of the income sources for Malaysia. It also provides job opportunities not only work as rubber planters, but the products are useful and allowed other jobs such as carpenters, paint manufacturer and more.

THE LATICIFERS - MODEL The model of The Laticifers are divided into 5 levels. First level is the map of Sitiawan with lots of colour sprayed on top. Concrete was casted high and low on a piece of plywood. In the baby phase, black colour is spray on top to symbolise the simple and boring life of the locals while white colour represents the development of Sitiawan which was scattered far away from each other. In the adult phase, few colours are sprayed on top of the concrete which represents the changing of lifestyle of local people because of the presence of natural rubber. Colourful symbolises the wealth and better lifestyle of the locals at Sitiawan. Second layer is the cutting of papillae and conjugation tubes. It is lifted up because it symbolises how natural rubber changing the land and lifestyle in Sitiawan. A changing colour from black to sparkling blue to black was sprayed on top of the cutting. Black at the beginning means there is no latex in the papillaes which symbolises the lifestyle and development of Sitiawan before natural rubber. Sparkling blue represents the latex flows in the tube and brings the wealth to the locals. Black at the end symbolises the old age of rubber tree and the falling of natural rubber at Sitiawan. Third layer is a combination of lots of sharp triangular elements. These elements represent the difficulties faced by the natural rubber which also the factors that caused the falling of natural rubber at Sitiawan and Malaysia. The elements were cut sharply to deliver an irony language to the people who keeps running away from the difficulties. There are also the awareness to the people about the importance of natural rubber. Fourth layer is an architecture structure that surrounded with lots of steel wires and steel meshes. Architecture structure represents the city lifestyle and it's constructed so much taller than the first three layers. This layer is built to deliver the messages about the demands of natural rubber needed in Malaysia as our country is importing tonnes of natural rubber from neighbouring country every year which cost billions. The last layer is the tallest layer among the others. It is a future development of natural rubber at Sitiawan. Natural rubber must bring back as it is still very important. It is also reminding the people of Sitiawan about the benefits brought by the natural rubber. Besides of bringing benefits to Sitiawan, it also brings advantages to our country by providing enough natural rubber and job opportunities to the people.

CURRENT
Sitiawan was known as a rubber plantation estate back in 90s. When Ridley brought in the rubber seeds, the locals were influenced and encouraged with big awards given. They started their carreer as a rubber planter. After they sold out the first harvested latex, they started to become rich. They soon enjoyed the luxury life by changing their living shelter, vehicular and daily lifestyles. Some of them even became a shareholder of the plantations as well as part of them were awarded with a social position by the government.
Currently, most of the lands in Sitiawan are filled up by the oil palm plantations. Oil palm plantations started after the falling of the rubber plantation during the WWI. The owner switched to oil palm plantation because it was more profitable and easier to harvest compared to rubber plantation. It has last for a century and it's still undergoing. 80% of the oil palm plantations in Sitiawan are under government organisation and the rests are under the locals.
DEMAND The demand of natural rubber needed in Malaysia and global is increasing everyday. Especially during this pandemic, natural rubber is needed to produce medical items such as the gloves. The reason of the increment demand of the natural rubber is because it has a better quality than synthetic rubber. Currently, Malaysia is listed as the top 3 importer of natural rubber in all around the world. In a century ago, our country was the top world exporter of natural rubber in global. It used to be our income source to develop the country but unfortunately, now it has became one of the biggest expenses spent by our country every year. Hence, natural rubber needs to be back to fulfil the demands of our country and also brings back the glory as the world exporter.
FUTURE Sitiawan is now occupied by oil palm plantations. Oil palm plantation is very important as it is one of the biggest income source in our country. The reasons of bringing back the natural rubber plantation back in Sitiawan is because the lands of Sitiawan has the potential that can fulfil the needs to grow the rubber trees such as the climate, the temperature, the humidity, the soil types and the wind speed. Besides that, it is also an appreciation to the rubber as it had brought the glory and wealth to the people back in the day. Hence, instead of replacing the oil palm plantation to natural rubber plantation, what if we combine both of them together and form a new source of natural rubber?

OLEOCHEMICAL Oleochemicals are derived from natural sources including plant and animal fats. The formation of basic oleochemical substances like fatty acids are by various chemical and enzymatic reactions. In the past, Sitiawan were mostly occupied by rubber plantation. Currently most the spaces are filled up by oil palm plantation since WWI. Instead of replacing the oil palm plantation to rubber plantation, we use the palm oil in the production of rubber to create a new source of rubber. The fatty acids contained in the palm oil enable the chemical reactions happen together with the rubber to form new rubber - palm rubber. Palm rubber is a natural rubber that has the characteristics of the synthetic rubber as well as better quality than the normal natural rubber. It is eco-friendly which doesn't pollute the environment. It has a stronger crosslinking between particles than the synthetic rubber which resulting a higher hardness and elasticity.

INEQUALITY Inequality is showing the development of 3 different regions which are the city, city-side and village. The development density of the city and city-side are higher than the village. In the city like Kuala Lumpur, tall buildings and technologies have occupied most of the empty spaces. But in the village like Sitiawan, there are lacking of luxury public amenities and technologies. This is one of the main reason why the youngsters of Sitiawan had moved to the city. They are seeking for the luxury and busy lifestyles. They also went to the city for higher education and jobs for higher salary. The modern lifestyle are always linked to the advanced technologies. Young generations in Sitiawan are also attracted by the technologies provided in the city. In result, the current demographic of Sitiawan is imbalanced due to the lacking of the participation of the youngsters.

ENVISION Envision is an imagination, a visualization of the future. Currently Sitiawan is under slow development, everyone is having a slow paced in the daily lifestyle. In the envision of Sitiawan, palm-rubber becomes one of the main elements that enable the development in Sitiawan. It's like the past, the locals had their first glory when they were doing rubber plantation. Palm-rubber will again provide the luxurious lifestyle to the people of Sitiawan. First, by doing the palm-rubber, it provides technologies and job opportunities to the youngsters who are looking for a related field. This helps to solve the problem of imbalance of demographic in Sitiawan. When there is more younger generations staying back in Sitiawan, it will also bring up the current economic in Sitiawan. In result, the development of Sitiawan will increase. Besides that, the social lifestyle increases as there will be an increment in the participation of the younger generations.

LANDSCAPE
Using the river as the separation line to divide the public and private space. Public area is located at the right side of the river because there are two main roads that are connected to the Tua Pek Kong Temple. Hence, there will be lots of vehiculars passing by everyday. Private area is mostly surrounded by greens and residential area so it will be more quiet compared to the other side.
By introducing the new technologies and architecture to the site, the research lab is also acted as a recreation park for the locals. Therefore, the landscape surrounding the site is designed and became one of the public ameneties for the locals who stay nearby. The landscape along the river is also designed which makes the river becomes alive again and parts of the recreation park for the locals.

By providing recreation park to the locals, the research lab is also designed with lots of openings from all sides. These openings act as an inviting element for the locals to come inside the building. Along the walkway to the openings and the buildings, there are beautiful landscapes designed to enhance on the walking experiencing.
In the building, the spaces are separated in the vertical way. There are 4 levels in the building. Underground level is a private area that only for the research lab purposes. Ground level is a public space for rubber tree plantations. Upper ground levels are also public space where the people walking and waiting for the cable cars.

The buildings are shaped in an oval-round shape. It is inspired by the cut off shape of a palm kernel.
The placement of the buildings is following the transverse section of the rubber trees. Papillaes (latex vessels) are the buildings while the conjugation tubes are the walkway connection between buildings.
The walkway is the connection between buildings. The walkway is inspired by the connection of the conjugation tubes and the papillaes which enhance the flowing of latex in the rubber trees .

The buildings are designed with different volumes and heights. The main building is designed as the biggest and tallest among the others.

The top of the buildings is cut slantedly to represent the cutting scars left of the rubber tree after tapping. There are also voids in the middle of the buildings to enhance the natural lighting and ventilation.
The facade is the combination of the laticifers and the palm kernel as the buildings are mainly used for the process of the palm-rubber.

To produce a well dispersed and distributed rubber compound.
I Thermal oxidation is used to remove the water contents in the vegetable oils by boiling the oils up to at least 160'C in an enclosed burning tank. The oxygen will pumped into the burning tank to allow the combination with the water vapour and also increase the presure in the tank. The water in the oils will evaporate and combine with the oxygen to become steam. This method is to ensure the pure content and the quality of the vegetable oils.

PROGRAM CIRCULATION RUBBER ART WORKSHOP IPLAYGROUND Rubber art workshop is an afterschool program for the primary and secondary school kids. This workshop is created to build the creativity and innovative of the younger generations. It is also a type of education for the younger generation to understand mroe about the production of the natural rubber. The rubber art workshop is also designed as a playground for the kids. This is to enhance the ideas of play while study which can build up their interest and ensure the learning process. Hence, the rubber production machineries are turned into the playground equipments in the workshop. The kids can learn the process by experiencing themselves in the playground equipments.

In the past, Sitiawan was known as a rubber estate but currently, 70% of the lands are covered by oil palm plantations. Half of the oil palm plantations are abandoned and bringing negative effects to the locals. Instead of eliminating the oil palms, the lab reuses the palm oil to produce the palm-rubber. Hevea is a new technology brought to the Sitiawan to provide new job opportunities to the locals which can improve the local social lifestyles and economic aspect. It is also a new education hub for the youngsters. A gathering spot and rec centre with public amenities provided for the communities that staying around.

Crossing culture of the technologies, agricultures and human - Hevea is a research lab for a new type of natural rubber Biorubber, a biodegradable and eco-friendly rubber. In the past, Sitiawan was known as a rubber estate but currently, 70% of the lands are covered by oil palm plantations. Half of the oil palm plantations are abandoned and bringing negative effects to the locals. Instead of eliminating the oil palms, the lab reuses the palm oil to produce the palm-rubber. Hevea is a new technology brought to the Sitiawan to provide new job opportunities to the locals which can improve the local social lifestyles and economic aspect. It is also a new education hub for the youngsters. A gathering spot and rec centre with public amenities provided for the communities that staying around.
