How to use this Guide The Artists’ Studio Tours represented in this guide are presented in chronological order as they will take place during the tour season. Each tour has a dedicated page with information about the tour. Some pages have additional destination highlights for visitors new to the locale of the tour.

We have assigned a tour number to each tour. This number serves as a key to find the tour page, as well as the corresponding driving instructions (Page 18) and location on the tour overview map (Page 19). You can also find a complete listing of every tour with tour numbers, names, dates and times for each of the tours (Page 5). was forever searching for her life work. As a hobby, she returned again and again to oil painting and now as a second career, she is focusing her passion on spending the rest of her life immersed in the fascinating world of art. Linda’s classical art training was obtained at the San Francisco Academy of Art. She displays her work in various local and national juried art shows.

L. Heath (Linda L. Heath) was trained as a

mathematician (BA) and sociologist (MA), specializing in computerized forecasting. She spent 25 years in the information technology industry, working as a forecaster, programmer/ analyst and project manager. Growing up in and then living among various cultures, she

dependent in Morocco and later with her husband, while on a 7-year sojourn in Saudi Arabia, exposed her to some of the great art and archaeology museums of the world. The great realistic artists in stone and paint spoke to her as prophets reaching across time, to help the world remember to appreciate beauty in all its myriad forms. Overall, her work reflects a desire to revive classical still life painting, share the beauty of the present through impressionistic landscapes, and reach for the future with a new art form called Fusionism.

Heath defines Fusionism as a new societal

movement that blurs the lines among different cultures, fuses old and new media, and mixes human versus machine-generated work. She is inspired by ancient cultures from New Mexico, digital images from NASA’s Hubble space telescope, and the opening of Spaceport America. Her Fusionist series reflects a pathway from here to eternity led by ancient spiritual guides.

About the New Mexico Artists’ Studio Tours

New Mexico is known worldwide as a

destination for finding fine art created by New Mexican artists, both native artists and artists who have moved to New Mexico for the culture, the landscape, the fresh air, and that unmistakable southwestern light.

For more than thirty years, (Dixon celebrates their 36th tour this season), artists across New Mexico have banded together locally in a cooperative effort to invite art lovers and visitors to meet the artists, experience their studios and discover their art where it is created. In 2017 the Guide represents 24 studio tours. These tours are comprised of as few as 5

or 6 artists to as many as 80 or more. The tours occur on designated weekends from the first weekend in May through the first weekend in November.

Most of the tours are scheduled to take

place from 10 am to 5 pm on each day of the open studios. Many of the tours also feature a Friday art reception, where tour visitors can meet the artists and view representative works in a gallery setting. A few of the tours take advantage of 3-day weekend holidays and extend their tours to the Monday holiday.

What’s new in this edition ?

This year we have added some new as-

pects to our guide that we hope will provide more information and broaden the scope of this annual publication. In addition to the 24 Artists’ Studio Tours we have included our Art Events pages highlighting art-related events that will take place across New Mexico from May of 2017 through April of 2018. We have also added Directory Pages, sponsored by artists, galleries, studios and other businesses. Please visit these pages to learn more.

Scenes from Carrizozo, NM - http://carrizozoworksorg

The historic town of Carrizozo, the county seat of Lincoln County and home to about 1,000 residents, is situated at the intersection of Highways 54 and 380 on the plains in the center of the state. Circled by mountains and a blackened lava flow and nearby white sands, colors dominate the landscape. Muted hues, transformed by natural light, draw artists from across the country to Carrizozo to live and work. New Mexico’s largest gallery of photography is here; so are vernacular architectural styles and embellished metal burros that look down from rooftops and peek out from enclosed courtyards.

Turn east from U.S. 54 at Three Rivers onto County Road B30 and travel five miles on paved road, following signs. This site is one of the few locations in the Southwest set aside solely because of its rock art. It is also one of the few sites giving visitors such direct access to petroglyphs. The number and concentration of petroglyphs here make it one of the largest and most interesting petroglyphs sites in the Southwest. The site offers 5 shelters, 1 group/handicap site, and 2 RV sites. Pets are allowed in the campground, but NOT on the trails. Restrooms and drinking water also are available. https://www.newmexico.org/ places-to-go/regions-cities/southeast/three-rivers-petroglyph-site/

The

annual Carrizozo Artists’ Studio Tour, August 12 and 13, opens those courtyards and homes of some of the most private professional and aspiring creatives in the state. Works vary from illustration to pottery to woven copper to tile, raku, sculpture and sewing, porcelain and painting. What binds them are the colors, light, forms and quirkiness particular to this remote place.

A town Festival on Saturday adds a historic home tour,

parade, fireworks, a beer garden, music, dancing and family fun to the studio tour. Color. Light. Art. Carrizozo. Soon to be a secret no more. August 12 and 13. 11 am to 4 pm. For more information go to Carrizozo Art on Facebook or www.carrizozoworks.org.

The Questa Studio Tour will be the first of the 2017

artist studio tours in Northern New Mexico. On August 19th-20th, artists from Questa and the surrounding communities will open their studios to share their talent and offer unique, hand-crafted works for sale. This truly is “Where Artistic Traditions Meet”. Just a half-hour north of Taos, a new generation of artists is creating quite a name for this historic little community.

Surrounded

by protected wilderness, with hiking trails into the Rio Grande gorge, and mountaintop lakes to fish and explore, this area has a long history of traditional art and crafts. This could not be more evident than in the recently-restored St. Anthony’s church where everything from the new stained glass to the recreated tin sconces was handmade locally, often by members of the same families who built this historic, adobe church in the mid-1800’s. This is just one of the stops on a truly unique studio tour that is slated to include artist studios and satellite locations where the more far-flung artists will gather.

Originally a farming community of handcrafted adobe homes surrounded by irrigated fields, Alameda retains much of its original character today. Narrow dirt and gravel roads lead to rustic adobe houses, horse and cattle pastures, apple orchards and brilliant green alfalfa fields. Fourteen years ago a group of eight artists joined together to celebrate art among friends and neighbors by creating the Sandia Heights Artists Studio Tour. This annual event has continued to grow and to emphasize community. Sandia Heights is located in the foothills of Albuquerque. Sandia Mountain rises to the east, and there is an expansive view of the city and Indian Country to the west, making a stunning background for Tour stops at our studios or homes. We usually feature several artists per location. We welcome new artists each year, all of whom embrace their media with enthusiasm. The result is a fascinating artistic diversity: from woodwork, to oil, watercolor, and acrylic paintings, from jewelry of silver and beaded pieces to fiber art, gourd art, mixed media, photography, and hand-built as well as wheel-thrown pottery. Opening Reception and Silent Auction on Friday evening, September 15th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The auction continues all day Saturday and Sunday.

On open tour days, follow the yellow directional signs with the familiar black crow logo, off Hwy 502, and obtain maps at individual artist’s studios during the tour.

Occupied since the 14th century, San Ildefonso Pueblo is one of the best known of the New Mexico living pueblos. San Ildefonso and the Spanish mission there have been sites of both conflict and rebuilding during a turbulent period in the histories of the peoples of New Mexico. Today, the pueblo is a historic district listed in the National Register of Historic Places, recognized for its historical and cultural significance and its important role in the revival of Pueblo ceramics. Located at the foot of Black Mesa, about 24 miles north of Santa Fe, the pueblo is characterized by its adobe buildings, ceremonial kivas, a central plaza, and a replica of the mission period church.

Today the pueblo is an artist community and welcomes visitors. Artisans at San Ildefonso have built upon and expanded from the traditions revived by Maria Martinez in the early 20th century. The pueblo’s feast day is January 23, where the traditional dances are performed during the day. In addition to visiting Mission San Ildefonso, visitors can stop by the visitor center, shops, and the museum that displays Martinez’s work. Dixon Studio Tour Open Studios Saturday and Sunday November 4 & 5, 2017 9 am to 5 pm

www.dixonarts.org nmastguide.com/tours/dixon-studio-tour

A FALL TRADITION The 36th annual DIXON STUDIO TOUR Saturday Nov. 4 and Sunday Nov. 5 from 9am to 5pm

The group show “Collected Works” will open on Friday Nov 3, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM in Dixon, NM. The Dixon Studio Tour is the oldest continuously running stu-

dio tour in the state. The Tour encompasses the adjacent villages of Dixon, Embudo, Rinconada, Canoncito, and Apodaca. Nestled in the Embudo Valley where the Rio Embudo flows into the Rio Grande, it is 50 miles north of Santa Fe and 25 miles south of Taos at the junctions of NM 68 and 75. The Tour owes its longevity and popularity to many factors, including the local community and the proximity to the active cultural scenes of Santa Fe, Taos, Taos Pueblo, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, and Picuris Pueblo. Only a few miles from the Embudo Valley is the newly documented Mesa Prieta petroglyph and rock art site with over 60,000 images. Long known for its rich Hispanic heritage, productive farm lands, and pastoral beauty, in the last 30 plus years the area has attracted many artists. People love to come to Dixon and the surrounding villages to wander among the orchards and visit the open studios featuring a wide spectrum of contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts.

The local community is included with the Mercado at the local

school and the Mercadito at the Mission building. Both venues feature many homegrown and homemade local products as well as traditional New Mexican lunches.
