About the cover and the artist:
Repair & Rug Pads
“The story of how I became an artist began about 11 years ago when I was working in the field as a farmer weeding carrots and beets. I started playing with the mud in the garden and it reminded me of when I was a child in Mexico. I used to make horses and bulls from the clay in our village. These were my toys. So I began making faces with the mud. I was so excited to be working with my hands to make something, not only to grow vegetables. I started painting the mud faces and making them into small sculptures. Then I began selling them in the Abiquiu Studio Tour. The next year I began making paintings. Now I make paintings and sculptures. I really enjoy making my art because it’s exciting when a lot of ideas come into my head. I’m happy to have another way to express myself with my art.” Gabriel Cisneros, Abiquiu If you are interested in purchasing this piece you may contact Gabriel at 505-685-4419.

Close by you will find water colorist Steve Waldrip and photographer Peter Weiss. Further down road A.5 are the studios of African kora and drum maker Michael Schraud and ceramist Sarah Welch. In the old church you will find ceramist and master cellist Mark Dudrow. Then up to road B to the West ranch Kelly will have a fantastic array of baked goods with Dave and the kids serving refreshments and burgers sizzling on the grill. On toward the Rio Grande gorge you can see Dean Swift’s wildflower fields. Then we go off to Garcia, to the studio of wildlife water colorist Karen Ahlgren, and Moe’s Bar and Grill serving western fare in their newly remodeled restaurant. After a slight detour down Poleo Road to the studios of water colorist Karen McCurtain-Blair and acrylic painter Allegra Sleep we arrive at the Costilla Plaza. Built in 1850 the restored buildings on the North side of NM196 now house oil painter Kathryn Vinson-Tatum and in the two story block house is the studio-shop of woodworker David Satrun. Out front famous local musician Michael Rael usually plays a couple sets Saturday afternoon. Across the road, local crafts people set up their booths and you can vote for the People’s Choice award in the Emerging Artist Show. Miriam Santistevan runs a full service Mexican restaurant, or you can go to Lucy’s for a burger or Frito pie. A half mile further down the road is the Alma De Maria community studio. Mara Cibis shows her Guardian Angels and retablos and serves very good European pastries. Then off to Aurelio’s for a green chile burger down by the Rio Costilla. Next, as we drive toward the Sangre de Cristos is the Cottonwood Meadows Ranch with stylish Sheree Jarrell and her goat products. We meander along the pastoral Rio Costilla for a few more miles to finally end the tour at the Amalia Inn; home and studios of print makers and oil painters Randy Pijoan and Evy McLean. 5th Annual Alameda Studio Tour Open Studios September 12 & 13, 2015
The fifth annual Alameda Studio Tour will be held Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at artists’ studios located throughout the scenic Alameda valley area, just north of Albuquerque. www.AlamedaStudioTour.com NMASTGuide.com/alameda-studio-tour/
Alameda is home to many established and emerging fine artists and skilled craftspeople who will open their studios and display their art work during the two days of the tour. The wide range of art for sale includes paintings in a variety of mediums, fused glass, mixed media, prints, folk art dolls, and much more.
Nestled in Albuquerque’s north valley is the historic village of Alameda. This area was the center of the Alameda Land Grant in the 17th century. Originally a farming community of handcrafted adobe homes surrounded by irrigated fields, Alameda retains much of its original character today. On the side streets, like Guadalupe Trail, you will often find yourself on narrow dirt and gravel roads which lead to rustic adobe houses, horse and cattle pastures, apple orchards and brilliant green alfalfa fields. And throughout the lovely rural area, artisans are eager to open their studios and share their creativity. Alameda is bordered on the east by the railroad tracks that originally helped to bring New Mexico into the modern age. To the north lies Sandia Pueblo. The famous Rio Grande, New Mexico’s life blood, forms the western border of Alameda, and the historic village of Los Ranchos roughly forms Alameda’s southern boundary.
The Alameda artists will donate a portion of their proceeds to Art in the School, a non-profit art education organization which benefits children. ArtintheSchool.org For a printable map of the studios and a complete list of participating artists, visit the web site: AlamedaStudioTour.com The images on this page are representative of a few of the artists who will participate in the Alameda Studio Tour in 2015.

Sandia Heights Artists
Open Studios September 12 and 13, 2015 Preview Night September 4, 2015 Twelve years ago a group of eight artisans joined t ogether to celebrate art among friends and neighbors with the Sandia Heights Artists Studio Tour. www.SandiaHeightsArtists.com NMASTGuide.com/sandia-heights-artists-studio-tour/
The annual event continues to emphasize community. Sandia Heights spans both sides of tramway and the foothills. The stunning vistas make fascinating backgrounds for Tour stops at studios or homes most of which feature two or three artists per location. Each of the Sandia Heights Artists, many of whom change each year, embrace their medium with enthusiasm. The result is an astounding diversity of media: from woodwork to oil, watercolor and acrylics; from jewelry of silver and beaded pieces to wearables, gourd art, pottery, mixed media, and hand-made books.
Preview Night for Sandia Heights Artists Studio Tour will take place the week before on Friday, September 4, at Albuquerque’s High Desert Art and Frame, located at 12611 Montgomery Blvd. (at the corner of Tramway and Montgomery near the Smith’s store). High Desert Art and Frame will feature all of the Tour artists in their gallery for the month of September. That night is a city-wide Artscrawl with many galleries participating from 5-8 p.m. with refreshments at every stop. Each month, the parent organization, Albuquerque Art Business Association, prints up a brochure for the galleries participating that month. That schedule and a printable version of the brochure will be available at AlbuquerqueArtscrawl.com prior to September. High Desert Art and Frame will also have our brochures on hand for the Studio Tour with larger maps by mid-August. High Desert Art and Frame hours are 10-6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Please plan to join us for the 2015 Sandia Heights Artists Studio Tour on September 12-13. Last year, after an 8 year hiatus, a couple of local artists decided to get the studio tour going again. Sixteen artists participated in the 2014 tour and we had visitors come from all over New Mexico and from the Balloon Fiesta to see what Los Alamos had to offer. It was a success! This year, we are excited to do it again, but we have even more in store for our visitors. The 2015 Studio Tour will be held on Saturday, October 17th from 10am to 5pm and Sunday, October 18th from 10am to 3pm. There will be an artist’s reception on Friday, October 16th from 5pm to 7pm as well. Samples of all of the artist’s work will be on display throughout the weekend in the Pajarito Room at the historic Fuller Lodge. LAAST is a 501(c)(3) non-profit which operates under the sponsorship of the Los Alamos Arts Council and consists of a working committee of artists. Right now, we have a vast array of artists participating, but we’re still accepting applications all the way up until August 1st.
Los Alamos has a very interesting history. We’re best known as the Atomic City and for our role in the Manhattan Project during WWII. And although our little city is steeped in science, we have so much more to offer. We have countless outdoor activities, a wonderful variety of shops and a vibrant community of artists who are ready to show off their talent. This year, we’re planning an art themed weekend in Los Alamos, getting as many people in the community involved as possible. The 2015 tour is scheduled to run on the same weekend as the Fuller Lodge Art Center’s Arts & Crafts Fair and there will be demos and activities at the Lodge as well as art that can be seen at various businesses throughout town.
October is a picturesque time to visit northern New Mexico. The Jemez Mountains provide a kaleidoscope of color to all who drive through. While the leaves shift from green to orange to yellow and the skies stay a brilliant shade of turquoise, you can add to the palette by visiting the homes and studios of these talented New Mexico artists.

Galisteo Studio Tour
Open Studios October 17 and 18, 2015 Just a few minutes south of the historic city of Santa Fe is the village of Galisteo centered in the magnificent Galisteo basin. This all adobe village of some 250 residents boasts of an incredibly diverse artist population. These artists, drawn by the natural beauty of our high desert surroundings and breathtaking sunsets, have made Galisteo their home. As you wind your way through the many studios of Galisteo, you’ll see photography, paintings, pottery and ceramic art, retablos, jewelry, bronze sculpture, weavings, many hand crafted local arts as well as tasty local fare.
For over 25 years, these artist residents have participated in one of New Mexico’s premier studio tours. This annual event is virtually the only time the public is invited to tour the private studios and meet the artists that call this classic New Mexican Village home. Much of the tour can be done on foot. The ancient cottonwoods that line the Galisteo River give portions of the tour a special ambiance rarely found in New Mexico. We hope you’ll enjoy your visit to our beautiful village.

The Tour owes its longevity and popularity to many factors like the community, the proximity of the active cultural scenes of Santa Fe, Taos, Taos Pueblo, Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, and Picuris Pueblo. Only a few miles from the Embudo Valley is the newly documented Mesa Prieta petroglyph and rock art site with over 60,000 images.

Long known for its rich Hispanic heritage, (notably writer Estevan Arellano and Santero Horatio Valdez) productive farm lands, and pastoral beauty, the area has, in the last 30 plus years attracted many artists. In 1982 two of these artists organized the first Dixon StudioTour. People love to come to Dixon and the surrounding villages to wander among the orchards and visit the open studios featuring a wide spectrum of contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts. Each artist creates their own world so the Tour visitors seem to step between worlds, using the Tour map to make their own discoveries.
The local community is included with the Mercado at the local school and the Mercadito at the Mission building. Both venues feature many homegrown and homemade local products as well as traditional New Mexican lunches. The “Collected Works” show features an outstanding piece by each of the artists on the tour. The show opens with a reception at the old library, on Friday Nov. 8th at 5:30 PM and runs throughout the tour. This is an opportunity to preview the new work and plan which tour stops are musts to see. Next to the group show and on the side of the local co-op, is a new ceramic mural celebrating the local community and created with the help of local youth and sponsored by Dixon’s award winning library.
