DETAIL - There and Back #2 by artist Don McKillop Welcome to the first edition of the Artists Studio Tour Guide of New Mexico. This guide is produced and published by EldoradoDaily.com. In the event that you are not familiar with the Eldorado Daily, eldoradodaily.com is a local independent online news and events publication, with more than 120 pages of information about and for the Eldorado community and its neighboring communities. Our pages include a community calendar, local news, civic information, arts, film, cultural events, non-profit activities, entertainment, a business directory, free classified advertising, a listing of local eateries, recreational, health and fitness opportunities, and much more.

In the Fall of 2013 we became aware of the numerous art studio tours which take place in our area in the Fall of each year. Upon further investigation we learned that there are 18 tours, with 21 weekend events involving over 1,000 artists opening their doors to visitors during planned events from the first weekend in May through the first weekend in November. These studio tours are intimate events, wherein the visitor is invited into the “inner sanctum” of the artists’ world, to view, explore and partake of the beauty and spectacle of each artists’ individual contributions. Traditionally, each of these tours have been organized by volunteer artists who give their time and efforts to create wonderful brochures, websites and other materials to inform and invite visitors to partake of the offerings of their respective artists and their studios..

Creating this first edition of the Studio Tour Guide has been a labor of love and a revelation. The artists who volunteer as organizers for these events have been generous and appreciative of the efforts to bring information about these tours under one roof with this publication.

We encourge you to keep this Guide with you for the duration of the Art Tour season. We invite you to plan your weekend visits and excursions to the far reaches of North Central New Mexico - to enjoy the Spring tours of Corrales, Placitas and Eldorado, the Summer tours through Santa Fe and Taos, and the cascade of September tours beginning with Rio Costilla and Pilar at the first of September and into the depths of Fall with the Alameda Tour, the Pojoaque River tour, 2 weekends of the High Road Artisans Tour, then just northeast of Santa Fe to the Pecos Tour.

Our cover art was generously offered to us for use on this inaugural edition of the Artists Studio Tour Guide of New Mexico by local Galisteo artist Don McKillop. The piece, entitled “There and Back #2”, is part of a diptych, oil on birch panel, priced at $1,800. Interested parties may view this piece and other works by the artist at the Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden and Gallery of Kevin Box in Galisteo, New Mexico. FIND OUT MORE at EldoradoDaily.com

In October the challenge will be to decide which tour to see on which weekend. El Rito and Madrid & Cerrillos share a weekend, but Madrid & Cerrillos also continue their tour for a second weekend, along with the 80 artists of the Abiquiu tour. Next is the Galisteo tour, the Las Vegas tour, and the Fall Eldorado show in Santa Fe. The Dixon tour ends the tour season on the first weekend in November. Alameda Studio Tour

4th Annual Alameda Studio Tour: September 13 & 14, 2014 The fourth annual Alameda Studio Tour will be held Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at artists’ studios located throughout the Village of Alameda. Alameda is home to many established and emerging fine artists and skilled craftspeople. The artists will open their studios and display their art work during the two days of the tour throughout the scenic Alameda valley area, just north of Albuquerque. The wide range of art for sale includes paintings, jewelry, recycled art, fused glass, mixed media, folk art dolls, and much more.

The Village of Alameda Nestled in Albuquerque’s north valley is the historic village of Alameda. This area was the center of the Alameda Land Grant in the 17th century. Originally a farming community of handcrafted adobe homes surrounded by irrigated fields, Alameda retains much of its original character today.

Alameda Studio Tour 2 DAYS - 30 ARTISTS

September 13 & 14, 2014 On the side streets, like Guadalupe Trail, you’ll often find yourself on narrow dirt and gravel roads which lead to rustic adobe homes, horse and cattle pastures, apple orchards and brilliant green alfalfa fields. Hidden in the rural beauty are many artisans eager to share their creativity.

Alameda is bordered on the east by the railroad tracks that originally helped to bring New Mexico into the modern age. To the north lies Sandia Pueblo. The famous Rio Grande, New Mexico’s life blood, forms the western border of Alameda, and the historic village of Los Ranchos roughly forms Alameda’s southern boundary. In 2011, a group of Alameda artists got together and formed the first annual Alameda Studio Tour with twenty-five artists opening their studios to the public, inspiring, educating, and offering their work for sale. The Alameda artists will donate a portion of their proceeds to Art in the School, a non-profit art education organization which benefits children. (ArtintheSchool.org)

High Road Artisans New Mexico Art Tour

Sept. 20 & 21 and Sept. 27 & 28, 2014

The High Road to Taos Scenic Byway is a lovely, winding road through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains between Santa Fe and Taos. It offers magnificent vistas of snowcapped peaks, alpine meadows, and charming traditional Spanish and Pueblo villages. This lovely scenery has inspired many artists and artisans who live along the High Road. We welcome you to come, explore, and help sustain the rural economy of this charming, centuries-old region. Always the last two weekends of September, the 2014 High Road Art Tour takes place September 20, 21, 27, & 28. The ‘High Road to Taos’ Scenic Driving Tour

The High Road is a back-country, scenic route between Santa Fe and Taos leading visitors through high desert, mountains, forests, small farms, and tiny Spanish Land Grant villages.

The “low road” runs through

the valleys along the Rio Grande.) Scattered along the way are the galleries and studios of artists and traditional artisans inspired by the beauty of their surroundings.

From Santa Fe take US Highway 285/84 North. Just past Pojoaque Pueblo’s Cities of Gold Casino and the turn to Los Alamos, go right at the light onto State Road (SR) 503 East. Follow this two-lane road as it begins in the Pojoaque (pronounced “poh-WAHkay”) River Valley and winds through lovely old Territorial adobes and idyllic horse pastures. To the right, beyond the arroyo, are the homes of the people of Pojoaque Pueblo. To learn more visit the website at www.highroadnewmexico.com

El Rito Studio Tour October 4 & 5, 2014

Come celebrate the 28th Annual El Rito Studio Tour! Hidden in plain sight is a small community embraced by the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains where residents have lived quietly for generations cultivating lives that foster independence. Fifty miles north of Santa Fe, just 12 miles off Hwy 84, El Rito is bursting with creativity in both traditional and contemporary media including sculpture, pottery, weaving, welding, tin and iron work, paintings, drawings, printmaking, photography and collage, jewelry, handmade books and note cards, Spanish Colonial furniture and carving, and musical instruments.

Twenty stops, including two on the New Mexico Fiber Arts Trail and one on the New Mexico Potter’s Trail, will display the work of over 40 artisans in the setting in which it was created. Visitors to the tour will be delighted by the variety of art, from local village arts and crafts to contemporary artwork. Northern New Mexico College will host the delightful and unique Mercado, a venue open to all ages and communities.

Below is a a representation of the work of some of the 40 artists who will participate in this year’s El Rito Studio Tour.

They also open three departments for the tour: Fiber Arts, Spanish Colonial Furniture, and Retablos.

The El Rito Library will host its scrumptious “Death by Chocolate” fundraiser. The El Rito Quilters Guild will be selling quilts, pillows, art dolls, draw string bags. Proceeds from the tour fund the Library’s general operating expenses.

Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes to enjoy a stroll in the crisp fall weather and work up an appetite. At the College their Cafe will be open to the public. There are park benches in their tree-covered park to rest and enjoy a meal. In the village, El Farolito will be cooking their famous chile, enchiladas, burritos, tamales, rellenos, and frito pies.

The tour is small enough that visitors can see each studio with ease and varied enough that there is something for everyone to enjoy. Autumn - with golden cottonwoods, clear blue skies, warm days and cool nights - is a particularly beautiful time to visit.

Galisteo Studio Tour October 18 & 19, 2014 Just a few minutes south of the historic city of Santa Fe is the village of Galisteo centered in the magnificent Galisteo basin. This all adobe village of some 250 residents boasts of an incredibly diverse artist population. These artists, drawn by the natural beauty of our high desert surroundings and breathtaking sunsets, have made Galisteo their home. As you wind your way through the many studios of Galisteo, you’ll see photography, paintings, pottery and ceramic art, retablos, jewelry, bronze sculpture, weavings, many hand crafted local arts as well as tasty local fare.

16

For over 25 years, these artist residents have participated in one of New Mexico’s premier studio tours. This annual event is virtually the only time the public is invited to tour the private studios and meet the artists that call this classic New Mexican Village home. Much of the

tour can be done on foot. The ancient cottonwoods that line the Galisteo River give portions of the tour a special ambiance rarely found in New Mexico. We hope you’ll enjoy your visit to our beautiful village.

The first year was a great success and the crowds have been coming ever since. People love to come to Dixon and the little villages of the Embudo Valley to wander among the orchards and visit the open studios and local businesses featuring a full spectrum of contemporary and traditional fine art and crafts.

The Dixon Studio Tour is a cooperative effort with the various artists performing all of the jobs from preparing the map to painting signs as well as coordinating the whole event. The local community has also been included with the formation of “The Mercado” which takes place at the public school and the Mercadito in the Mission building.

Both feature many home grown and homemade local products and crafts. A traditional home cooked lunch is available at both venues. The “Collected Works Show” features a piece of work by each of the artists on the tour. The show opens with a public reception at 5:30 p.m. the night before the tour and continues throughout the weekend. To learn more visit w w w. d i xo n a r t s . o r g
