ALL ABOUT THE WALK By Arantxa Mathapersadh NMMU’s Vice Chancellor (VC) has opted to swop his traditional work attire and briefcase for something a little more unorthodox. It was announced earlier this month that the VC, Professor Derrick Swartz, has chosen to tackle the challenge of climbing Mount Fuji in Japan on 7 August this year in attempts to raise funds for students requiring financial assistance. This campaign, which aims to raise awareness of the current financial issues, was initiated by Prof Swartz’s personal commitment to the University’s 10 year celebration. Mount Fuji has ten base camps; therefore each one will represent the ten years of NMMU, as well as values such as Mentorship, Talent, Vision and Ubuntu. The campaign, which has become known as “#climb4NMMU” emphasises the greatness of the need for financial support for students, especially in the Eastern Cape which is considered the poorest province in South Africa. The climb, a total of 3776m, serves to metaphorically represent the endless struggles faced by numerous

students on a daily basis as they fail to obtain a tertiary qualification due to funds. All funds raised by the campaign will go towards the University’s Bursary Legacy Campaign, which is led by the NMMU Trust. Ultimately, the University aims to raise R500 000 to support students through the duration of their studies.
There will be a series of events that will take place leading up to Prof Swartz’s departure from Port Elizabeth on 31 July. These events will aim to raise both funds and awareness for Prof Swartz’s climb. As a motivation for his bold adventure in the name of education, Prof Swartz stated, “I studied at university
because of the bursary support I received from people I never knew personally. My bursary was a gift from the past to the present. I strongly believe that this is our generation’s responsibility too. We can give back in thousands of different ways. The #climb4NMMU campaign is just one way.”
