Kuopio is one of the national centers of expertise and a significant university city.

There are over a hundred restaurants, eight shopping centers and an abundance of shops in Kuopio.

Kuopio, established in 1775, is Finland's eighth largest city with over 110,000 residents. 600,000 people live within Kuopio's territory.

Kuopio covers a surface area of 3,740 kmÂ˛, a quarter of which is water and half of which is forest. Making up most of the water area is lake Kallavesi with a shore line of 5,442 km.

The most important traditional industries in Kuopio are the wood and food industries. Tourism is very significant to Kuopio's economy. The service sector is the largest employer in Kuopio.

The Kuopio region contains Finland's second largest number of summer cabins. There are 8,684 second homes and cabins altogether.

Around 80% of Kuopio's residents live within the city's borders and around 20% live in the countryside or rural areas.

The water system, rich vegetation and varied landscape typical to Kuopio, all give a unique beauty to local nature.

Altogether there are around 50,000 homes in Kuopio.

There are over 61 000 houses of different sorts in Kuopio. Over half of these, around 35 000 are apartment blocks, around 17 000 are detached houses and over 8 000 are terraced houses.

THIS SUMMER Kuopio is full of dancing, music, boating, sailing, flying and fun. Locals gather together at the market square and at various events during the summer. As Finland's second largest summer cottage area we offer plenty of wonderful summer activities for many different groups, both for locals and for those visiting Kuopio. Kallavesi tempts you to discover our waterways and unique lake archipelago by taking a cruise, by boating or sailing. Boating is in high demand in Kuopio this summer. June celebrates a real boating superweekend when the Kuopio Boating event opens in the harbor and the Kuopio racing event in Finland's sailing league is sailed on lake Kallavesi. The thrills of aviation can be enjoyed in the unique Tour de Sky air show at Rissala airport. According to an unofficial and very loose survey, the walking speed of Kuopio locals proved to be Finland's most lethargic. I am grateful that I have been able to live and grow up in Kuopio.

Kuopio’s museums are always interesting places to visit. A variety of exhibitions are open for those interested in days gone by and those in to modern developments.

1. Kuopio museum

The basic exhibitions in the Kuopio museum display Eastern Finnish nature and cultural history. Each year the museum arranges various exhibitions. The themes of each exhibition compliment the exhibition as a whole and they are often linked to current events and developments. This winter’s theme exhibitions are Veden viljaa – Kallaveden kalat (The water’s harvest, the fish of lake Kallavesi), Lennossa (In flight), about Finnish birds and the mythology that surrounds them, and Verjnuarmu – kuhtumattomat vieraat (Verjnuarmu – gate-crashers), that shows the career and unique visual world of the rock metal band that performs in the Savo dialect.

2. Old Kuopio Museum The Old Kuopio Museum is made up of eleven old wooden houses. The oldest buildings in the group date from the late 1700’s and the youngest date from the late 1800’s. The rooms inside the buildings show the residences of different families from the 1800’s up until the 1930’s. The museum also contains a pharmacy building, exhibition hall, and the room of writer Minna Canth.

3. Kuopio art museum The art museum began operating in a former bank in 1980. The museum is situated right in the centre of town next to the cathedral, near the market square. It functions as the North Savo district’s art museum and it’s tasks include the exhibition of local visual arts, documentation and research.

4. Kuopio Automobile museum The Automobile museum is an enthusiast’s dream. All of the work is done voluntarily and supported by sponsors. There is an abundance of cars, many of which are in fine running order. The selection is constantly changing, new cars come and sometimes cars are out on a drive. 5. The J. V. Snellman home museum The J. V. Snellman home museum is in the building that Snellman lived in for most of the time he was in Kuopio, from 1845-1849. The building is a typical 1800’s residence of a fairly wealthy family, with hipped roof and six pane windows. The museum is decorated with furniture and articles belonging to the Snellman family. VB photographic centre’s aim is to promote the photographic culture of North Savo and Eastern Finland, but it also operates through it’s cooperative network nationally and internationally. 9. The Riisa Orthodox church museum

church museums in Europe and one of Kuopio’s most significant attractions. Still at the core of the collection is the Valamo abbey’s ancient monument collection established in 1911, which is supplemented by artifacts from abbeys and congregations that were evacuated during the war, private donations and the museum’s own acquisitions. The museum moved to it’s current location in 1969 and a renovation that began in July 2013 lasted one year. It's collection includes over 800 icons and around 4,000 textiles, 100,000 photographs and sacral artifacts. For the most part, the collection represents the 17 and 1800’s, but older artifacts date back to 1100’s. The hall contains Byzantine culture, Finland’s Orthodox church history, iconostasis representative of the 19th century academical school of thought, and a hall where icons from different centuries picture martyrdom on red walls. The Minna Canth park is situated at the northeast of Kuopio's central grid plan. The park's planning is from the year 1937 and is the work of garden architect Bengt Schalin. 11. Snellman park Snellman park is the city's oldest park. The park was named Snellman park when a bust of J.V Snellman by Johannes Takanen was unveiled on the 3.7.1886. The outbuildings that make up Pikku-Pieteri belong to a group of wooden houses that were built in 1903. The residence was built by butcher and businessman Wilhelm Tuhkanen for his own family. The City of Kuopio purchased the building for rental purposes from the Tuhkanen family in 1963. Pikku-Pietari market lane began operating in June of 1989. Found in the red log building is a terraced café and a long row of small shops. Unique gifts and items are on offer from among their wide range of items. Art and handicraft exhibitions can be admired in the upstairs sections of some of the shops. The lane also showcases work exhibits as a skillful craftsman demonstrates old handcraft traditions. Kuopio’s Spa Hotels Rauhalahti and Kunnonpaikka arrange open traditional evenings in idyllic shore surroundings throughout the year. The evenings are open to all and you can come alone or with the family. Additionally there is the possibility to enjoy a smoke sauna and catering for a free. There are nibbles on offer at Kunnonpaikka and at Rauhalahti you can sit around the buffet table.

Konttila Savo tenant farm Konttila is a former vicar’s tenant farm preserved in its original condition in the middle of Puijo only three kilometers from the city centre. More is known about the various stages of the farm from the late 1800’s, but a dendrochronological study on the growth rings to determine timber dating has shown that Konttila’s wall timber dates from the late 1700’s. Konttila farm is an example of eastern Finnish hillside residence based on shifting cultivation and it is known that shifting has taken place at Puijo since the 1620’s. At the beginning of the 1980’s the buildings became property of Kuopio city and after many attempts, Konttila was restored and opened for visitors. Visitor’s Gems 1. Market hall and marketplace The elegant Art Nouveau market hall is a traditional trading center and attraction. In addition to shopping, the hall is used to meet people and enjoy the laid back Savo atmosphere. At the moment there are 19 shops operating in the market hall. In addition to groceries such as meat, fish, bread, spices, cheeses and cold cuts, purchases of handicraft accessories, souvenirs, flowers and books can be made. In the Hall Café you can ease your coffee cravings. If you don’t have time to sit and enjoy your coffee, then you can take it away along with something sweet from the specialized shop. The glass pavilion located at the side of the all, and the Apaja shopping center located under the market square, complete the services on offer at the market hall. Located right at the core of the city center with it’s pedestrian streets, the market square is a bustling center of activity. Also known as ’Mualiman napa’, the market square sells traditional delicacies such as Finnish fish pasties (kalakukko) and pan fried vendace and meat pasties. 2. Puijo and Puijo tower The modern Puijo tower is the third viewing tower to be built on the Puijo sight. Puijo tower is a major attraction for visitors and represents the heart of Kuopio’s landscape. The tower is a beacon of the region, warmly welcoming home travelers from their journeys. A visit to the 75 meter high tower is a memorable experience. The tower’s location on the hill creates the amazing view from the top, which brings together Lakeland-Finland’s wooded landscape and the buildings of Kuopio. City and nature meet in a way that makes the experience unique. A visit to the tower is a good way to make an impression both on Finnish and foreign visitors alike. A return to visit the tower is surprisingly good for locals too. The scenery changes slowly with time but changing seasons, weather, and the time of day affect the view enormously. Kuopio’s Saint Nicholas Cathedral is the main church, or cathedral of the Kuopio Orthodox congregation and of the Karjala diocese. The cathedral was designed by master builder A. Isakson and was dedicated for use in 1904. The church was built using local builders, but General Governor Nikolai Bobrikov helped immensely with funding and planning. As a result of the second world war, the central administration of the Orthodox church had to leave Sortavala and in 1955 a church assembly decided that the new location would be in Kuopio. So the church in Kuopio became the denomination’s central cathedral and the archbishop’s own church. The church has undergone three large changes and renovations, the latest being in 20032004, when it was returned as closely as possible to it’s original appearance. The church hall contains paintings by renowned icon painter Petros Sasaki and a mosaic by Moscow artist Juri Jarin.

Kuopio’s harbor is one of the busiest in Finnish Lakeland. Along with boating the harbour offers culture, tasty food and drinks. There are several cozy restaurants by Lake Kallavesi, on which sail different cruise ships. In the summertime the restaurants Wanha Satama and Albatrossi are busy night spots known for their terraces. Additionally by the lakeside you can find Café Satama and restaurant Capri Marina in Kallamarina. The harbor is at its best during markets and culture events. Kuopio Wine Festival and Kuopio Dance Festival take place at Satamatori market square in the summer. The traditional Kalaryssäys fish market event will be held in the early autumn. The manor’s history begins in 1792 when the Koivumäki manor, in connection with land parcelling, was formed from the excess land of two army official residences. King Gustav IV Adolf gave the estate to tax assessor Salonius in 1802. After the death of Salonius, his successors were unable to maintain the estate leading to a forced auction in 1869. The Björkbacka estate was purchased by Gustaf Emanuel Ranin in the same year. Ranin’s trading house is the oldest running business in Kuopio and is still owned by Ranin’s descendants. The current art nouveau style main building was built in 1907 and was designed by Helsinki architect Waldemar Aspelin. The rooms of the manor contain 18 tile stoves and many old artifacts and family portraits hang on the walls. Today the café and restaurant services are taken care of by Koivumäen Kartano ltd. 6. Saaristokatu

Saaristokatu (Archipelago Street) connects the city center to the suburb of Saaristokaupunki. This 4,5 km long scenic route begins in Tasavallankatu in Siikaniemi and runs until Keilankanta, caressing the islands on the way. The street was finished in 2008 and it travels upon the waters of Lake Kallavesi for 1,5 km. The bridges named after famous people originating from Kuopio make up half a kilometer of the street. The Ellen Thesleff bridge reaches 280 meters, the Fridolf Weurlander bridge is 30 meters long, the Anton Lindfors bridge covers 22 meters of street and the Unto Koistinen bridge runs for a lengthy 160 meters. Saaristokaupunki consists of four new neighborhoods rising up on the headlands between the old city center and the so called park area of Petonen. 7. Alahovi Berry Wine Farm

Vaajasalo is 9.5 sqaure kilometer island inhabited by 100 people on Lake Kallavesi, on the east coast of Kuopio. There is a ship pier on Alahovi’s shore which serves regular boat visits. The pier also has places for small boats. It is possible to get to Vaajasalo island by car from Kuopio’s east side (Vt17), on the ferry from the Verhmersalmi road at Kortesalmi.

8. Moomin Café The Moomin Pancake Café is one of the first in Europe. The café that operates in connection with the Carlson department store is Moomin themed both in decoration and tableware. 9. Korkeakoski In total, 36 meters of stepped falling rapids, it’s water’s coming from the small Löytyn creek, ie. the Korkeakoski river. The waterfall is created when the river flows over a broken crack in the bedrock and into a gully surround by a ridge wall. 4. TOURS & CRUISES See Kuopio from a broader view with a train sightseeing ride. The Street Train operates from June to mid-August and allows you to admire the harbor and Väinölänniemi landscape. You can catch the train tours from the side of the Market Square. If you like boats and the water, remember to also take advantage of the many cruises organized to experience the Kallavesi archipelago. Even sit on the top deck for a great view and enjoy the sun!

1. TAKING A WALK If the weather permits, an excellent option to celebrate a holiday or a day off is a walk around the downtown area. You can also marvel at the animals at the Alahovi vineyard located in Vaajasalo, including, for example, pigs, horses and sheep. The winery is easily accessible from the harbor by boat.

6. THE KUOPIO MUSEUM The Eläinlapset! Show (Animal Kids! Show) is organized at the Kuopio Museum (Kauppakatu 23) during the summer. Small stories showcase the different animal families and adventures experienced during the early stages of their lives. Museum visitors can try how it feels to pet real bear cubs and beaver kits. You can also test your own agility, wit and courage as the offspring of animals. 7. KUOPIO’S HISTORY To capture the atmosphere of Old Kuopio, visit Pikku-Pietarin Torikuja (Little St. Peter’s Square alley, Hatsalankatu 24). Just a few steps away from the Market Square, you will find a shed built in the early 1900s housing a charming café and a milieu of handcraft boutiques. In addition to shopping, the place offers interesting things to see for the little ones and even the chance to spot St. Peter’s slingshot. 8. INDOOR PLAY AREAS Enjoy playing at the indoor adventure park HopLop (Kartanonkatu 4) in Levänen or the indoor activity park SuperCorner ABC (Vitostie 1771) in Pitkälahti. Both have activities suitable for younger and for older kids. For example, HopLop boasts a Spider tower, giant trampoline and a climbing wall, and Pitkälahti’s SuperCorner ABC has free-style skateboarding, a climbing city with different routes and as well as a peaceful play horse and an ice hockey game controlled with your own body movements.

It’s a physical version of the mystery games made for computers and devices. In an enclosed space and by exploring your environment, players need solve the problems and escape from the room using logical reasoning, creativity and teamwork. Players under the age of 12 are not recommended to participate in the games due to the level of challenge and thrill. The game Arwoitus in Kuopo requires that

THE PEIKKOMETSÄ LOCAL exercise area is a clever destination for a day out on your holiday. The area is huge and is bordered by a small forest area. The area contains a cable track and the possibility to play disc golf. In addition to rideable animal characters there are also balance bikes, bouncing net and a tyre swing board. The surrounding forest, trails, and large rocks are also great places for adventure.

THE HAPELÄHDE LOCAL exercise area is a large and diversely equipped park. A pleasant and controlled setting is created by the idyllic bridges and ducks swimming on the river. There are playing fields and benches beside the playground. An ice-cream stall and toilets are located at the edge of the park. Ball games can be played on the play field and the lawn area is for throwing a frisbee or for picnics.

THE PLAYGROUND IS situated behind the Wanha Satama restaurant in a beautiful harbor setting, near the water but at a safe distance. There is one larger climbing area, a boat from which you can slide, balance and play ships. Picnic tables and swings are in the park. The playground has a wonderful lay-by area. Ice-cream stall and the Harbor market’s services are just around the corner.

RENOVATED A COUPLE of years ago, Brahe’s park is located in the middle of Väinölänniemi at Kuopionlahti. It is flanked by water on one side and the town’s buildings on the other. The green belt can be used for sunbathing, picnics and spending time. The playground consists of a labyrinth, climbing frames, a rocking off-road car, swings, sandpit and parkour course.

THE LIPPUMÄKI LOCAL exercise area is a very popular recreational park. Beach volley and basketball courts are located around the playground. The area contains an ice-cream stall, swings, climbing frames, and many workout devices. At the end of the football dedicated sports field is a separate skateboard area.

THIS VERY NICE park is situated at the center of Neulamäki at the end of Pinokuja street. The pride of the park is the Indian ship which you can climb. The Indian theme is enhanced by a totem pole and the surrounding nature. Additionally the park has a good selection of other equipment; swings, a seesaw and a large sand pit.

THE LEHTONIEMI DAYCARE’S yard in Saaristokaupunki is available for all to use when the daycare is closed. There are slides, and ball games can be played in the large yard. On the roof of the climbing frame there are colorful ski jumping skis sticking out. On the other side of the yard is a small wooded area that can be used for hide and seek. The play area feeds independent ideas and the imagination.

YOU CAN ENJOY a walk around the pond at ValkeisenLampi park. The actual children’s play area is at the Niirala school end of the park. There is a local exercise area and public toilets at the other side of the pond. The playground has such things as an indian village, spring swings, climbing frames and slides. The spinning clown has been recognized for some time as a little landmark at the park.

SITUATED CLOSE TO Valkeisenlampi, the rules of the road set the pace in this mini world, that attracts peddle car drivers of many ages. TRANSPORTATION LINKS TO the pond’s beach are very good. The location is both a plus and a minus. On the one hand it’s nice that it is doesn’t take long to find, but on the other hand, being in between two busy roads could create a disturbance to sunbathers who are seeking some peace and quiet. Two tables and six benches make sitting and eating possible. The beach has two changing rooms and two portable toilets.

KUOPIO’S SECOND MOST popular beach, Kirveslahti’s beach is close to the center of Petonen. It is possible to to play beach volley on the beach, while drinks, ice-creams and snacks are available from the summer restaurant that operates close by. Kirveslahti has six changing rooms and two piers. Life guards are also present on the beach.

THE BEACH AT Särkiniemi is a little bit out of the way, which means it is quite quiet. The beach is small but very clean and safe. The ground is level with a sand and grass area. In addition the beach has swings. If you really want to enjoy water activities, athletic joggers running along the beach, or beach volley, you should really look elsewhere. There are two changing rooms, a portable toilet and four benches on the shore.

THE BEACH KNOWN as Julkula beach is a nice size, but the steep, grass and hay covered slope takes up most of the area. On the slope it is difficult to throw a frisbee or play ball games, in fact there isn’t much space for sand either. The shore is however a peaceful place, where the sun shines until the evening. Available for use are two changing rooms and portable toilets.

5. Haminalahti culture trail

Katiskaniemi’s nature trail is a two-kilometer-long route that starts behind the hotel and circles around the Katiskaniemi shorelines. The path is located mostly in the protected area. The most valuable parts of the region are deciduous groves and stunning pine forests sprouting out of the rocks. Along the way, check out the groves of vegetation and the plants and animals which live on the beach and in the water. The mark of man can be seen in the lumbering cabin, Jätkänkämppä and pastures. The nature trail passes through landscapes of the artistic von Wright brothers. These views were the inspiration for the famous painting ”Fighting Capercaillies”. Haminalahti has been named one of the nationally important cultural historical environments in Finland. The trail of four and a half kilometers circles in the middle of places with great views, coniferous forests and rugged cliffs. A grill hut, equipped with firewood, is located near the start of the Haminalahti camp and course center. (Leirikuja 2)

4. Ranta-Toivala Ranta-Toivala boasts nature trails measuring two kilometers and five kilometers winding through the protected area. Halmejoki (Halme River) is known for its different groves, from which the region’s most spectacular groves can be found beside the streams passing through the area. Hikers can explore the diverse bird life living around Halmejoki. With luck, you may even hear the call of a bright yellow Oriole, a beautiful fluted whistle. Another trail, Patteripolku, circles around places of war-time action. (Halmejoentie 55)

There is a two-kilometer trail, only a boat ride away, where you can see almost a hundred different species of trees and bushes. The oldest trees are from the early 1900s. Along with the trees, there are memories of the first steam saw mill in North Savo. The villas on the northern side tell a story from the time when the island was used as a summer resort. There is also a lean-to with cut firewood. Tip! Karhonsaari visitors can borrow a rowing boat during the summer season from the City Council of Kuopio Office Building, Customer Service, address Suokatu 42, telephone 0800918511.

The Kolmisoppi-Neulamäki area’s three nature trails pass through a nature reserve. The routes are between two and four kilometers. The hiking trails pass through the beautiful Vuorilampi area, Neulamäki rocks, large boulders carved during the ice age, ancient forests, ferns and the old Yoldia seashore from about 11,000 years ago. You can begin your hike from the north-west side of the Kolmisoppi pond at the end of Juontotie or the parking lot on the side of Pilpantie. Neulamäki’s trail has a connection to a fire place, stocked with firewood, located in Vuorilampi’s north-west end. (Pilpantie 6)

3. Rauhalahti

Three marked nature trails leave from the peak of Puijo, all of which are about two kilometers in length. The trails snaking through Puijo’s forests are located in protected natural areas, old-growth forests, groves and traditional landscapes. While exploring trails and their flora and fauna, you can get to know the area’s cultural history and the Puijo Tower. A beautiful panoramic location can be found along the footpaths of Julkulanmäki including a fire place and Aaro Jalkanen’s statue, easily accessible from the parking lot. (Puijonsarventie 63)

Everyman’s Right: EVERYONE RESIDING IN Finland has access to nature without a special permit or license, regardless of who owns or occupies the land. This right is nation-wide. Extensive natural areas and low population density create good conditions for the exercise of Everyman’s Rights. However, there are also restrictions and responsibilities. Here is a checklist. Everyman’s Rights can be restricted in protected areas and national parks regarding, for example, open fires, collecting plans and modes of transport. Check the local and individual national park guidelines and instructions. CYCLING

Leisurely sightseeing with a cooling breeze - cycling is an excellent way to enjoy a summer day. On the other hand, with a high enough speed, cycling is also excellent exercise. Here are some cycling routes in the heart of Savo.

Easy cycling in the centre of Kuopio THIS ROUTE IS also suitable for children cycling or sitting in a child seat. There are several playgrounds, beaches and ice cream kiosks along the way, as well as cultural places of interest. The route sets off from Kuopio’s market place in the direction of Sankaripuisto. The nearby market alley of Pikku-Pietari is a nice place to take a short stroll. The route continues to the Valkeisenlampi pond, where there is a children’s traffic park (Huuhankatu 2), ice cream kiosk and a playground (Uppo-Nalle). On the other side of the pond there is a sports park and a beautiful beach for relaxing. Next you can head back to the

centre through Alavantie Street and Lapinlinnankuja Street all the way to the Kuopio Cathedral and on to a tour of the lush parks, Snellmannin puisto and Brahenpuisto. Before reaching the Väinölänniemi recreation area, you can make a stop off at the Old Kuopio Museum (Kirkkkokatu 22), which houses a café, and at the St. Nicholas Cathedral (Sepänkatu 7). It is best to tour Väinölänniemi along the shoreline and perhaps visit the island of Rönö. Along the way there are ice cream kiosks, beaches and many lovely resting places. Then you can continue along the shoreline to the passenger harbour, where there is a market place and a playground, and then to Hapelähde park in Suokatu, after which it is time to head back to the market place. The route is marked along the way with green markers.

The tour of Kuopio THIS ROUTE IS for those who enjoy more challenging cycling and longer distances. In the north is the challenging Puijo ridge, where you can cycle on marked routes. In the south the beautiful Saaristokatu Street and Saaristokaupunki area are worth visiting with their sports parks and beautiful landscapes. The route sets off from Kuopio’s market place and heads towards Puijo, first along Puijonkatu Street and

then Puijontie Street. You can explore the Puijo area either on bicycle or on foot. Next the route takes you back to the centre and then through Väinölänniemi beach along Varastokatu Street or along the shoreline to the passenger harbour. Then you continue to Päiväranta along Itkonniemenkatu Street and then along the shoreline through Männistö around the Iso-Valkeinen pond. Next the route takes you through Julkula along Puijonsarventie Street back towards Puijo. From there you continue through Niuva and past the Kuopio University Hospital. From the hospital area you can take a turn to www.nmt.fi

Puijo and Konttila or head straight towards Särkilahti and Rauhalahti. The Route takes you through the Katiskaniemi nature conservation area towards Lippumäki and Pölläkkä, and then on through the magnificent landscape of Jynkävuori towards the Saaristokaupunki area. Saaristokatu Street with its beautiful bridges takes you

back towards the centre. You can stop to admire the Keilankanta canal and have an ice cream or visit the Pölhö Island. Next you come to Kuopionlahti bay through Haapaniemi and then on towards the market place. The route is marked along the way with red markers.

Vehmersalmi Tour THIS IS A beautiful countryside route around Lake Kallavesi through Finland’s biggest inland island Soisalo. The tour is about 110 km long depending on some route choices. Along the

way there are several nice resting places, nature trails and rural tourism entrepreneurs, a cable ferry or two and magnificent scenery. Along the route are for example the Niittylahti outdoor recreation area, Pökösenmäki culture trail and Halmejoki nature trail.

Länsiranta Loop THIS ROUTE TAKES the cyclist through good cycling and pedestrian tracks towards the countryside and several villages. One interesting option is Niemisjärvi, a village amidst beautiful

hill landscape. Hirvilahti is a thriving agricultural community with farm houses among vast fields and with views of Lake Kallavesi and smaller lakes. The village shop is also worth a visit. The route continues heading north through vast forest areas. There is also a village shop at Kurolanlahti.

Tahko Route THIS ROUTE OFFERS exhilarating exercise. It can be cycled through on one go or with stops along the way. The length of this winding route is 100 km one way. It starts from Kuopio towards Joensuu over the Kallansillat bridges. There is a cycling track along the Joensuu high way. Turning at the airport junction, the route takes the cyclist towards

Rissala airport and from there through smaller roads towards Siilinjärvi past Kasurila. From there the route continues towards the manor hotel Kivennapa and Muuruvesi harbour. Next the route takes you to Juankoski, where you can admire the 18th century iron mill setting and landscapes of Karjalankoski and Juankoski canals. After the cultural landscape of Viitaniemi you come to the Pisa River and observation tower and Lastukoski canal. Then you cycle towards Tahkovuori through the centre of Nilsiä, where you can continue by boat to Aholansaari Island. Tahko is a good place to stay overnight and continue exploring the next day.

In Kuopio’s city center, shopping centers, department stores and small boutiques are within walking distance, making your shopping spree a pleasant experience.

he city spreads around the Kauppatori market place creating a unique setting for shopping, including local specialties and design as well as bigger retail chains. There are plenty of things to see and explore. Most of the city center’s shopping spots are within the area covered by the streets Asemakatu, Puistokatu, Minna Canthin katu and Kuninkaankatu. Shopping centers within a short car drive or a bus journey can be found in Päiväranta in the northern part of the city, Levänen in the south, Kolmisoppi and Matkus. The shops have the freedom to choose their opening and closing hours. During the weekdays the supermarkets in the city center open usually at 7 am or 8 am and close at 8 pm or 9 pm. Shopping centers and boutiques open at 9 am or 10 am during the week and close between 5 pm and 9 pm. On the weekend the grocery stores and other shops close usually at 6 pm. Some of the shops in the city center are closed on Sundays. Also the Midsummer affects the open-

ing hours. Generally Alko is open from 9 am until 8 pm on weekdays and from 9 am until 6 pm on Saturdays. On Sundays Alko is closed.

SINCE 1902 THE idyllic Market Hall has offered high quality products in a laid back atmosphere in the heart of the city right by the market square. The building was renovated in 2012. This 114-year-old hall is a popular shopping spot as it offers groceries, souvenirs, meat, fish, bread, pastries, cheese, cold cuts, spices, coffee, sweets, flowers, books and handicrafts, cafés and meals.

ONE OF THE finest attractions in Kuopio is the market square that has dominated the city center since 1818. During the summertime it is a lively trade spot. Numerous market stalls sell a traditional Savo delicacy called kalakukko, or Finnish fish pasty: fish baked inside a loaf of bread. At the market place one can buy pastries, berries, vegetables and handicrafts among many other things. There are also several cafés and food stalls at the market square.

DESIGNED BY ARCHITECT Kaj Michael and opened in 1966 H-talo is the oldest shopping center in Finland. It is located in the most vibrant spot of the city, at the crossroads of Kauppakatu and Haapaniemenkatu right beside the market place. Here you can find fashion, interior decor and gift items, lingerie, a beautician, a pharmacy and electronics.

THE SECOND OLDEST shopping center in Kuopio is a well-known structure in the city’s setting. Torikulma offers home decor products, natural health products and gift items. 9. THE FRIEND OF A SPORTS GUY A sports guy has numerous friends, particularly at Futari sports pub during the important games. Here you can follow several sports on TV and the atmosphere is through the roof.

10. AN EVENING SNACK Our day tour ends here. Pannuhuone offers the largest whisky assortment in town with over 70 different types loaded on the shelf. In Finland there are three bottles of the rarest delicacy of them all, Macallan Reflexion. During the comedy festival the terrace is the funniest one in Kuopio.

2. TREASURE TROVE OF HOME DECOR Sisustus Kodin Picaso on the other side of Puijonkatu holds home decor classics as well as new treasures, lamps, furniture, textiles. There are plenty of things to touch. Fortunately the beautiful furniture is way too heavy to carry around on our city tour.

3. THE BUSTLING MARKET PLACE The market square is bulging with people and cheerful sounds. There are flowers, clothes, berries and meat pie kiosks. After some twists and turns we move on into the Market Hall, where we find Italian ice cream. It’s the first treat of the day. 4. FASHION Our stroll maps out through the Sokos passageway into Nina & Henri, which greets us with a friendly atmosphere. On the other side of Ajurinkatu you can find Muoti-Pia with its pleasantly surprising selection.

The city center and its alleys ed on the ground floor of the oldest stone building in Kuopio. After crossing the park you’ll get a glimpse of the glistering Lake Kallavesi, the ships and the harbor warehouse restaurants. Walking on the waterfront (and on Varastokatu) towards Väinölänniemi you’ll spot the windmill on Vasikkasaari island and hear the shrieking of the seagulls. You’ll marvel at the wonderful lake view and pause to gaze at the beach or the beautiful gazebos situated on the cape. The Rönö bridge leads us onto Honkasaarentie and all the way to Varvisaari island and its observation point. Upon returning to the city center it’s recommended to drop by St. Nicholas Cathedral (Sepänkatu 7), Old Kuopio Museum (Kirkkokatu 22) and VB Photographic Centre (Kuninkaankatu 14-16).

You’ll be able to explore the Kevät sculpture while strolling back towards the city center on the bushy paths next to Alavantie. By the pond you might bump into Mr. Pushkin (the statue) and crisscrossing between the picnic tables and wild flowers it’s easy to steer towards Torikatu and Hanna Partanen’s Finnish fish pasty bakery (Kasarmikatu 15). After savoring a meat pie and a doughnut you’ll have enough energy to make some handicraft findings at the market alley of Pikku Pietari (Hatsalankatu 24).

At the corner of Minna Canthin katu is situated Muotikuu, filled with irresistible summer dresses.

9. ABOARD UKKO After our dose of shopping we steer towards the refreshing winds of the harbor. The vessel is about to leave the port so we board the ship. The reception is magnificent. On the sunny deck of M/S Ukko it’s only fitting to toast at the end of a pleasant day. 10. WAREHOUSES At the harbor warehouses, the evening culminates with dinner at the Italian restaurant Capri Marina and the events held at Satamankulma. Here Savo culture is alive and kicking, mixing nicely into the international breezes.

WHAT TO EAT IN SAVO?

eople feel that local food is familiar, intimate and secure. Someone once decided that local food is everything grown in the area visible from the village church tower. As the phrase “local food” implicates, it comes from within the local and surrounding region. “For us, having a domestic origin is important. Our store is a pioneer when it comes to Finnish food as well as the local and organic food selection. 80% of the products are domestic,” says Pasi Toppari, the Shop Owner from the K-Citymarket in Päiväranta.

Local labor and resources are used to produce local food. This is one way to support the region’s prosperity. Local food is consumed locally, sold in the local supermarket and is fresh due to the fact that it does not need to be transported over long distances. It has been said that Finnish eating habits vary slightly according to socio-economic backgrounds, but at least whole-grain products, potatoes, root vegetables and dairy products are traditionally included in one’s diet. Berries, lake fish and rye products are of note because they are not used on this scale anywhere else in the world.

The Savo region is certainly famous for its delicacies such as a baked fish pie with a rye dough crust (called “kalakukko” in Finnish) containing a mixture of fish and pork. Other variates are stuffed with rutabaga or potato. Dessert versions are filled with blueberries or lingonberries. A “kalakukko” is traditionally baked in a bread oven. The area has several local bakeries whose products are also sold in the supermarket. Unleavened bread from the Savo region, called “rieska,” is made with barley, potato or other hulled grain.

Local food is seasonal food: it favors the best raw materials of different seasons and respects the local cooking traditions. During the summer, berries, vegetables, root vegetables, mushrooms and fish are the domestic Finnish delicacies. Summer in the Tahko area offers easily accessible activities and a chance to experience something new for all ages.

he Tahko holiday centre has become a family summer holiday oasis where the hustle and bustle of everyday life is soon forgotten. The Tahko event calendar is constantly growing and every year there is something new to experience and see. The Midsummer Festival, now organized for the second time, brings together popular artists. The highlight of this summer is a concert by Scorpions at Tahko Event Park in July. Tahko serves as a host for many sports events. This reflects on the high availability of everyday sports possibilities and active events. MTB Tahko, the biggest mountain bike event in Finland, and Finntriathlon are fine peaks in the summer calendar of the sport oriented holiday centre. It is easy to

impersonator, actor, comedian. MY PERSONAL TAHKO story began in the 1980’s when I was visiting my buddy in the old cottage village. From the very beginning Tahko appealed to me because of its beauty. At Tahko I enjoy the tranquility of having my own cottage and all the endless activities. In the summer I golf, play tennis and ride a bike. Every now and then I do catch a zander during my fishing trips. Most of my Tahko buddies come from the southern part of Finland to spend their holidays at Tahko. The Savo people and locals are nice too.

The holiday centre has potential to accommodate up to 10 000 people with its cottages, hotels, apartment hotels and farm accommodation. Tahko is also an excellent base for those who wish to explore other parts of the region. Tahko is everything, except boring.

By Train The closest train station is at Siilinjärvi, 31 km away. The travel center at Kuopio (train and bus station) is 54 km away. Tahko was chosen The Ski Center of the year in Finland 2016.

There are 25 restaurants and 10 activity companies in the area.

There are two 18-hole golf courses.

Tahko has 24 slopes, the longest of which is 1200 meters long. The difference in altitude is up to 200 meters. There is also a slope for kids.

Tahko has two riding stables, a petting farm, spa, bowling alley, sports arena and local exercise park.

Tahko is home to around 60 permanent residents.

Tahko is a part of Kuopio and belongs to the former Nilsiä district. The area covers 848 km2, 136 km2 of which is made up of water. Syväri and Vuosjärvi are the area’s largest lakes.

Lastukoski channel area On the way from Tahko to Pisa its worth stopping to view the Lastukoski channel. The lock located between Syväri and Vuotjärvi lake was opened for use in 1906, and it’s still working. There is a small shop open to tourists during the summer. Nurmeksentie, 73300 Nilsiä.

Kinahmi countryside scenery There is a hiking trail at the top of the steep quartz Kinahmi ridge that offer wonderful views of well kept idyllic countryside. On the eastern slope you can explore the setting of the Pölkkypuro little village that has been preserved in its original condition.

Aholansaari Aholansaari is in addition to its value in cultural history, a camping and holiday center with an idyllic countryside from the 1800’s. Aholansaari’s hut is especially suited for hiking. You can get to Aholansaari by two covered boats or by using your own boat. All scheduled services travel from the Sääskiniemi pier near the Tahko holiday area, to Aholansaari and back again. Tahko’s Scenery elevator The Panorama chairlift (marked number 7 on the slope map) works as the Scenic elevator between 29.6.-7.8.2016, Wednesdays from 12am to 3 pm and Saturdays from 11am to 3pm, Sundays from 10am to 1pm. 6. BEACHES Tahko and Nilsiä have several good sand beaches. The most popular ones are the shallow beach of Tahkolahti right in the centre of Tahko and the Sieraniemi beach a little bit farther away. 7. THE SPA The Tahko Spa Hotel is open through the summer. The pool area has a swimming pool with four 25-metre lanes, therapy and recreation pool, jacuzzi, children's pool, water slide and refreshing outdoor pools. There is also a Wibit -water adventure course, where children can climb, slide and play with friends. 8. DISC GOLF The Tahko Spa Activity Park also features a 9-hole beginner-friendly disc golf course free of charge. It takes about one hour to complete the course. Here is a list of some popular activities for children and young-minded people. 1. ACTIVITY PARK The activity park right next to the Tahko Spa offers many activities for children, teenagers and adults. The park has a sports and play area with, for example, a cable slide, parkour area, floor-ball course and fitness equipment. 2. FARM ANIMALS At the Tahko Farmi petting zoo visitors can admire the adorable farm animals and feed them according to instructions. “Morning in the farm” is a guided tour on how to take care of the farm animals such as alpacas, miniature pigs and Mangalica pigs, hens, ducks, sheep, goats, bunnies, ponies, horses and cows. You can also rent a rowboat, an electric outboard motor, a fishing rod, a bicycle or an ATV quad bike at the farm. 3. 4. AHOLANSAARI ISLAND The Aholansaari camp and holiday centre is a famous travel destination in the Tahko area. In the summer it can be reached from Tahko in about ten minutes by boat. The heart of the island is the historically valuable Paavon pirtti, a traditional Finnish cottage. Two ships, Toivo and Kleofas, take visitors to the island.

GOLF'S POPULARITY AS a form of outdoor sport has grown from year to year. Playing golf in Finland is inexpensive and many different age groups are attracted to the sport because it is sociable and easy to get started. The golf courses in Savo offer a wonderful experience that all golfers should try. The warm spring means grass has grown well and both of Tarina's 18 hole golf courses are in good condition right from the beginning of the golf season. Until recently a male dominated sport, golf has found it's way into the hearts of female golfers. At times it is even taken up as a hobby by the whole family. Thursdays at Tarina are open to all while guided beginner evenings and green card courses always begin on Mondays. - There has already been quite a stir since the beginning of summer, says Tarina Golf Oy managing director Osmo Ruuska happily. - The competitive aspect of golf is often highlighted but most of the players are here for the exercise and who enjoy being together outdoors regardless of age or skill level. The Old Course that was completed in 2000 has received a reputation as one of Finland's most beautiful courses. The New Course was completed in 2008 and can be described as a competition course. It is situated near Syvärinjärvi lake in the Golden Resort villa area. - Along with both courses a versatile and high quality hotel and villa accommodation are also available, tells Ilva. - One could say that the playing conditions on the New Course work better than the Old Course. Services easily found at Savo golf courses are club, restaurant, and other services. Both golf centers offer the same amount of events also. THE SUMMER PERSON’S MALL The summer gives many good reasons to go to Päiväranta or stop there for gas on your way to Tahko. The mall provides the best grocery in the city and a dozen specialty stores under one roof. The Päiväranta K-Citymarket is known for its serviced counters, the best in the city, and its extensive selection of over 22 000 items. H-talo is located in a bustling part of town, on the corner of the market square, surrounded by the market hall, shopping centers and department stores. 12 different businesses are at your service in this shopping center of specialized shops.
