Welcome to

Kuopio LIFE IN Kuopio is easygoing, intellectually humorous and harmonious. Top league sport teams, Tahko tourism centre, sports and cultural activities, gorgeous nature, thrilling events, diversity of restaurants and Finland’s most modern city theatre keep you busy during your leisure time. Don’t worry about feeling alone in the heart of Savonia – the quick-witted locals are eager to socialize.

THE AREA is a unique combination of science, art, technology and industry. Here great stories come out of unexpected and unusual encounters. Kuopio is a haughtyfree zone, a place where something essential about life has been understood. This realization echoes on in music and it can be seen in the motion of dance, it hums in the tranquility of Puijo's forests, splashes on the waves of lake Kallavesi and it twinkles in people’s eyes. It means authenticity that isn’t ashamed of its origins. It means caring and feeling positively curious about new things. It is east and west, Lutheran and Orthodox. It is Kuopio at its best. WINTER TIPS 1. Finland Ice Marathon

”The annual outdoor ice skating competition brings skaters from all around the world to the frozen Kallavesi lake.”

2. Snow sports

- The ice formed around flowing water is usually thinner. Places such as rivers, bottlenecks and straits, reefs, points, river and stream estuaries and embankments that drop steeply into the water.

”Snow sports attract people to Puijo and get them moving.”

3. Riisa ”The Finnish Orthodox Church Museum offers a unique cultural heritage.”

- The ice is thinner at drainage areas of industrial plants and residential areas due to the flow of warm emissions. - Bridges, piers and ships that are in the ice keep warmth and create current so the ice nearby is weakened. - Areas where a body of water deepens have larger quantities of water and takes longer to freeze, so the ice in these areas can be weaker. - Reedy areas can sift the ice making it weaker. - Cracks in the ice can weaken the load capacity of the ice. Snow piles up in these cracks and other gaps which makes the ice thinner and can even melt completely. - Shipping lanes are really dangerous and shouldn't be crossed if traffic moves regularly.

Beautiful nature and an enjoyable environment with plenty of services makes Kuopio an appealing place to live – a high quality city life.

Winter travel

There are over a hundred restaurants, over dozen shopping centers and an abundance of shops in Kuopio.

SOURCE: FINNISH METEOROLOGICAL INSTITUTE

THE STUDY OF Finland's water systems carried out by the Finnish Environment Institute in 2005 still shows that lake Kallavesi's main body of water freezes on average at the beginning of December. As everyone can observe though, in recent years we have had to wait significantly longer for the lake to freeze. If the ice is strong enough, then a 2.4 km ice road opens between Itkonniemi and Vaajasalo that is safe to drive on by car. There is no sure way to tell where the ice can bear weight or not. The thickness of the ice doesn't guarantee safety because the ice could be porous or brittle and hollow spring ice. Extra caution should be given if the ice is dark during spring but bright white ice could also be surprisingly dangerous.

Kuopio's museums are always interesting places to visit. A variety of exhibitions are open for those interested in days gone by and those in to modern developments. Kuopio’s museums and galleries always offer something interesting to see and experience. In addition to permanent exhibitions, there are visiting exhibitions with various themes from which there is plenty to choose. Plan your own cultural day and even visit all! 1. Kuopio Museum

1

The basic exhibitions in the Kuopio museum display Eastern Finnish nature and cultural history. Each year the museum arranges various exhibitions. The themes of each exhibition compliment the exhibition as a whole and they are often linked to current events and developments. This winter, the museum has “A hundred years - a hundred pictures” exhibition on display, which depicts the phases and mind-set of the Finnish countryside. “Everyone’s Kuopio – Home in Kuopio,” the exhibition series to celebrate Kuopio’s 100-year anniversary, includes an “Everyone’s Kuopio” Scarves Pop Up. The exhibition combines scarves and the scarf user’s story into a live piece of art.

STATUES Oksapoika is not alone THE OKSAPOIKA STATUE stands on

guard beside the town square at the junction of Haapaniemenkatu street and Kauppakatu street. His gaze is mysteriously directed to the heavens. The boy isn't staring into emptiness though, the focus of his gaze are Kuutar, the Maiden of the Moon, and Päivätär, the Maiden of the Day.

3. Kuopio art museum The art museum began operating in a former bank in 1980. The museum is situated right in the centre of town next to the cathedral, near the market square. It functions as the North Savo district’s art museum and it’s tasks include the exhibition of local visual arts, documentation and research. During the winter, there is the “Seven Giants” exhibition as well as “Frozen Days” which brings the chilling beauty of winter to be admired by museum visitors. Open: Tue-Sat 10am-5pm. 5. The J. V. Snellman home museum The J. V. Snellman home museum is in the building that Snellman lived in for most of the time he was in Kuopio, from 1845-1849. The building is a typical 1800’s residence of a fairly wealthy family, with hipped roof and six pane windows. The museum is decorated with furniture and articles belonging to the Snellman family.

8. The Riisa Orthodox church museum Riisa is one of the most remarkable Orthodox church museums in Europe and one of Kuopio’s most significant attractions. For the most part, the collection represents the 1700’s and 1800’s, but older artifacts date back to 1100’s. The hall contains Byzantine culture, Finland’s Orthodox church history, iconostasis representative of the 19th century academical school of thought, and a hall where icons from different centuries picture martyrdom on red walls.

There is much to see and do in Kuopio during the winter. Be sure to explore at least these unique spots. 9. Kuopio's market hall and marketplace The elegant Art Nouveau market hall is a traditional trading center and attraction. In addition to shopping, the hall is used to meet people and enjoy the laid back Savo atmosphere. At the moment there are 21 shops operating in the market hall. In addition to groceries such as meat, fish, bread, spices, cheeses and cold cuts, purchases of handicraft accessories, souvenirs, flowers and books can be made. In the Hall Café you can ease your coffee cravings. If you don't have time to sit and enjoy your coffee, then you can take it away along with something sweet from the specialized shop. The glass pavilion located at the side of the all, and the Apaja shopping center located under the market square, complete the services on offer at the market hall. Located right at the core of the city center with it's pedestrian streets, the market square is a bustling center of activity. Also known as 'Mualiman napa', the market square sells traditional delicacies such as Finnish fish pasties (kalakukko) and pan fried vendace and meat pasties.

Other features of the pedestrian center are the Siskotyttö and Veljmies statues in addition to the seven new sculptures by artist Pekka Kauhanen.

of day, the darkness of the evening reveals the lights shining all the way to the horizon, and tells how people live so far and wide.

10. Puijo tower The modern Puijo tower is the third viewing tower to be built on the Puijo sight. Puijo tower is a major attraction for visitors and represents the heart of Kuopio's landscape. The tower is a beacon of the region, warmly welcoming home travelers from their journeys. A visit to the 75 meter high tower is a memorable experience. The tower's location on the hill creates the amazing view from the top, which brings together Lakeland-Finland's wooded landscape and the buildings of Kuopio. City and nature meet in a way that makes the experience unique. A visit to the tower is a good way to make an impression both on Finnish and foreign visitors alike. A return to visit the tower is surprisingly good for locals too. The scenery changes slowly with time but changing seasons, weather, and the time of day affect the view enormously. 11. The Saint Nicholas Cathedral Kuopio's Saint Nicholas Cathedral is the main church, or cathedral of the Kuopio Orthodox congregation and of the Karjala diocese. The cathedral was designed by master builder A. Isakson and was dedicated for use in 1904. The church was built using local builders, but General Governor Nikolai Bobrikov helped immensely with funding and planning. As a result of the second world war, the central administration of the Orthodox church had to leave Sortavala and in 1955 a church assembly decided that the new location would be in Kuopio. So the church in Kuopio became the denomination's central cathedral and the archbishop's own church. The church has undergone three large changes and renovations, the latest being in 20032004, when it was returned as closely as possible to it's original appearance. The church hall contains

12. Koivumäki manor The manor’s history begins in 1792 when the Koivumäki manor, in connection with land parcelling, was formed from the excess land of two army official residences. King Gustav IV Adolf gave the estate to tax assessor Salonius in 1802. After the death of Salonius, his successors were unable to maintain the estate leading to a forced auction in 1869. The Björkbacka estate was purchased by Gustaf Emanuel Ranin in the same year. Ranin’s trading house is the oldest running business in Kuopio and is still owned by Ranin’s descendants. The current art nouveau style main building was built in 1907 and was designed by Helsinki architect Waldemar Aspelin. The rooms of the manor contain 18 tile stoves and many old artifacts and family portraits hang on the walls. Today the café and restaurant services are taken care of by Koivumäen Kartano ltd. Bonfires and campfires are an integral part of Finnish culture and the mind’s landscape. Hiking is a popular pastime in Kuopio, so campfire sites are abundant. Sitting by the fire is relaxing and is also a good time to catch up or to tell stories with friends and family. An open fire is more than just a way to prepare food and keep warm- it provides an important social atmosphere.

K

uopio city and a few associations have around 50 lean-to sheds, huts, shelters for cooking and campfire places that are available for use to anyone. Located around Kuopio, mainly on the shores of lake Kallavesi and the islands close by, a skier can find well over 20 places with a campfire and often a shelter to take a break. Lean-to sheds can be found close by too. Hietasalo island is a favorite spot for boat trips during the summer, but it is also nice to visit during the winter too, especially at spring time when the snow is hard enough to walk on top of. There are several

shelters where cooking is possible. One of the town’s most popular cooking shelters is on the mainland at Pölhö. It is easy to reach even by foot leaving from the road that leads to Saaristokaupunki. People living in Saaristokaupunki have places near by called Selkähavukka, where there is a rebuilt leanto shed, and Savolanniemi, where there is a hut for a barbecue. Kirveslahti has a place for a campfire at Kielonsaari. K-CITYMARKET PÄIVÄRANTA Päivärannantie 18, +358 10 537 9600 Mon-Sat 8.00-21.00, Sun 10.00-21.00 www.k-citymarket.fi

TIPS: Prepare all ingredients at home as much as possible. Among other things, chop the vegetables and put the necessary spices in small bags. Think carefully about what you need for your outing. If possible, use natural ingredients. Nature provides the best ingredients, especially in autumn. Fish dishes can also be made from fresh fish caught during the same trip.

REMEMBER: Do not leave any waste behind!

Everyone residing in Finland has access to nature without a special permit or license, regardless of who owns or occupies the land. This right is nation-wide. Extensive natural areas and low population density create good conditions for the exercise of Everyman’s Rights. However, there are also restrictions and responsibilities. Here is a checklist. Everyman’s Rights can be restricted in protected areas and national parks regarding, for example, open fires, collecting plans and modes of transport. Check the local and individual national park guidelines and instructions.

The city of Kuopio has a service network of over 50 ice hockey and skating rinks or areas. The list of sites to be frozen can be found on the city’s web page.

Areas to be frozen will open up for skaters as they become fit for use.

Ice fishing is an ancient type of fishing in Finland. Ice fishing You use an auger to drill a hole in ice on a lake or at equipment sea, from which you catch fish. In summer you can 1. ICE FISHING ROD use similar methods from a boat or from a pier. A short and light fishing rod

ce fishing as a hobby is fun, exciting and affordable. Equipment is cheap and you need no fishing licence. It’s important to remember dress warm, as ice fishing mainly means sitting still in freezing weather. Experienced ice fishers know the best fishing spots. A beginner may find these spots due to clusters of fishing holes, and thus benefit from good fishing spots. Without such clusters, you can start where the fish hang around during summer, which is next to reeds and headlands. There are different methods of ice fishing. The methods differ from each

other based on the jig i.e. lure in use. If the fish take bait easily, a vertical jig is the best to use. A type of weighted jig called mormuska works better when the fish take bait poorly.

THE CITY CENTER AND ITS ALLEYS

Kuopio is just the right size to be explored on foot. The city holds tranquil culture paths, unobstructed walking experiences and scenic routes for joggers. Trails varying in length permit an effortless bike expedition to the heart of Savo region. CULTURE TRAIL KUOPIO IS ALSO a city for children and senior citizens. The unobstructed routes and the center’s smaller alleys are safe. The surroundings of Valkeisenlampi pond in the city center offer an unobstructed trail with many park benches to rest on.

STARTING FROM TULLIPORTINKATU by the market square we’ll head towards Kuopio City Theatre (Niiralankatu 2), passing by Sankaripuisto cemetery and Kasarmipuisto park. Behind the culture building there are the traffic park, which is rather quiet during winter, and the livelier playgrounds as well as the beach of pond Valkeisenlampi. On the opposite shore you can delight in the rugged beauty of the church of Alava. (Keihäskatu 5). You’ll be able to explore the Kevät sculpture while strolling back towards the city center on the paths next to Alavantie. By the pond you might bump into Mr. Pushkin (the statue) and it’s easy to steer towards Torikatu and Hanna Partanen’s Finnish fish pasty bakery (Kasarmikatu 15). If you’re around before Christmas, it’s easy to drop by from here to the Pikku Pietari market alley (Hatsalankatu 24) to shop gifts and handicrafts.

SAARISTOKATU AND SAARISTOKAUPUNKI

THE CULTURE TRAIL (3-8 km) takes place in the city center where you’ll run into authentic city culture with its pubs and art experiences as well as nature in the middle of the city. During winter, the snow covering the parks entices to make snow angels, and often the park is littered with snow men, each classier than the next. NATURALLY OUR JOURNEY begins by the Market Hall and continues on the pedestrian zone of Kauppakatu beside the restaurant quarter towards Kuopio Art Museum (Kauppakatu 35). On the other side of the road rises the recently renovated Kuopio Cathedral (Vuorikatu 17), and by following its stony walls we reach Snellman park and Kuopio Museum opposite of the park (Kauppakatu 23). As we proceed down on Kauppakatu towards the harbor, we discover art galleries and the legendary restaurant Sampo with its vendaces and other Savonian delicacies. Restaurant Sataman Helmi is situated on the ground floor of the oldest stone building in Kuopio. After crossing the park you’ll get a glimpse of the glistering Lake Kallavesi, the ships and the

harbor warehouse restaurants and the Ice Marathon course in the winter when the lake is frozen. Walking on the waterfront (and on Varastokatu) towards Väinölänniemi you’ll spot the windmill on Vasikkasaari island and hear the shrieking of the seagulls. You’ll marvel at the wonderful lake view and pause to gaze at the beach or the beautiful gazebos situated on the cape. The Rönö bridge leads us onto Honkasaarentie and all the way to Varvisaari island and its observation point. Upon returning to the city center it’s recommended to drop by St. Nicholas Cathedral (Sepänkatu 7), Old Kuopio Museum (Kirkkokatu 22) and VB Photographic Centre (Kuninkaankatu 14-16).

IF YOU’RE UNDAUNTED by a long trip, or you’re on the move by car or by bicycle, you should travel to the pride of Kuopio, Saaristokatu and Saaristokaupunki. For the passionate exerciser, the 15km route is a study in contradictions through industrial areas and the outdoors. The magnificent Saaristokatu is an experience worth seeing: nothing beats a picnic in the Pölhönsaari island shelter by live fire. And no view is as surprising as the 13-story apartment houses on the top of the already high banks of Keilankanta channel. www.nmt.fi

Winter travel

THE MOST BRISK route goes directly from the market square past the Kummisetä terrace and the Music centre towards Haapaniemi. After touring around the shores of Haapaniemi and having admired the chimney of the Saastamoinen roller mill, the energetic traveller can recharge at the power plant and move towards Bellanranta beach and Saaristokatu. By the bridges you can find the cooking shelter of Pölhönsaari as well as the campfire spots of the Pikkusaaret islands. After reaching Käränkä island, the road goes on under the eyes of the Bridge guards to the other side of Keilankanta channel all the way to the of home fair area of Lehtoniemi. From there you make an U-turn back towards the center and cross the bridges via Tasavallankatu to the shrine of KuPS football team at the stadium, and through Myhkyrinkatu back to the market square. Well done!

Dress properly for WINTER CONDITIONS 7

TEXT NMT/EMMA HEINONEN, HETA JYRÄLÄ PHOTO JONNA KAASALAINEN

During winter, it is important to dress correctly in clothing which is neither too warm nor too cold when you’re outside.

F

innish winters can be harsh, but the right type of clothing holds up against any type of weather. First, you should think about what kinds of activities you’ll be doing outside. Wearing more than one layer of clothing is usually a good idea. It is especially important when moving briskly or in windy conditions because it can be especially cold. You should choose clothing that is water-repellent, wind-resistant and removes moisture from your skin to keep you dry. When layering, it is good to first have a moisture-wicking base layer, then an intermediate layer and then a water-repellent outer layer. Having many layers allows you to add or remove layers as needed, for example, if the weather changes.

The right kind of winter 2 clothing consists of a jacket, trousers and good shoes. It is important to wear a hat to keep your head warm, a windproof scarf to protect your neck and warm gloves for your hands. Luckily, the materials used today are soft and flexible, so they are comfortable to wear. “When selecting outerwear, you should first think of the purpose of the garments. For coats, the thickness and material are essential criteria. For active and sportswear, a slightly thinner coat is suitable, while a thicker, insulated coat is better for less active situations,” advises Margit Leppänen from Intersport Kuopio. Shopping centers offer entertainment, refreshment and possibilities for making purchases. In fact, for many travelers shopping is a pastime amongst the traditional tourist attractions.

I

n addition to sightseeing, visiting cultural attractions, and enjoying luxurious pamper treatments, these days a growing number of travelers wish to go shopping. Shopping is not the same as making purchases, rather it’s a way of spending time: looking around, daydreaming, wandering around the stores, passing time with friends or

family. Shopping is a choice of pastime. Shopping centers meet the needs of those who wish to shop by creating a comfortable setting. The indoor shopping lanes are like beachside boulevards decorated by trees and café terraces, neat and tidy rest and refreshment areas and plenty on offer to families that need child care facilities and play areas.

ONE OF THE finest attractions in Kuopio is the market square that has dominated the city center since 1818. During the summertime it is a lively trade spot. Numerous market stalls sell a traditional Savo delicacy called kalakukko, or Finnish fish pasty: fish baked inside a loaf of bread. At the market place one can buy pastries, berries, vegetables and handicrafts among many other things. There are also several cafés and food stalls at the market square.

KUMPPANI

What to eat IN KUOPIO?

People feel that local food is familiar, intimate and secure. Someone once decided that local food is everything grown in the area visible from the village church tower. As the phrase “local food” implicates, it comes from within the local and surrounding region.

F

or us, having a domestic origin is important. Our store is a pioneer when it comes to Finnish food as well as the local and organic food selection. 80% of the products are domestic, says Pasi Toppari, the Shop Owner from the K-Citymarket in Päiväranta. Local labor and resources are used to produce local food. This is one way to support the region’s prosperity. Local food is consumed locally, sold in the local supermarket and is fresh due to the fact that it does not need to be transported over long distances. It has been said that Finnish eating habits vary slightly according to socio-economic backgrounds, but at least whole-grain products, potatoes, root vegetables and dairy products are traditionally included in one’s diet. Berries, lake fish and rye products are of note because they are not used on this scale anywhere else in the world. The Savo region is certainly famous for its delicacies such as a baked fish pie with a rye dough crust (called “kalakukko” in Finnish) containing a mixture of fish and pork.

Other variates are stuffed with rutabaga or potato. Dessert versions are filled with blueberries or lingonberries. A “kalakukko” is traditionally baked in a bread oven. The area has several local bakeries whose products are also sold in the supermarket. Unleavened bread from the Savo region, called “rieska,” is made with barley, potato or other hulled grain. Local food is seasonal food: it favors the best raw materials of different seasons and respects the local cooking traditions. During the summer, berries, vegetables, root vegetables, mushrooms and fish are the domestic Finnish delicacies. Päiväranta K-Citymarket supports local food production and employment, as well as bringing fresh flavors to the tables in the Savo region. It’s worth bringing the pure Finnish food to the rest of the world. Lake fish, cheeses, wild herbs, mushrooms, berries, and Finnish liquorice are excellent gifts to take home as a tasty memory of Finland.

The Food Finns eat varies somewhat according to each sosioeconomic background, but traditional diet has included wholegrain products, potatoes and root vegetables, dairy products, vegetables, berries and fruit.

The bread culture here is very rich. Kalakukko is a Savo tradition. Usually fish and pork rind are baked inside the delicious rye dough shell. Karelian pasties are inseparable part of Finnish culinary tradition. Fresh bread is baked everyday.

The best bit about exotic, unique, world renowned delicacy, cold smoked reindeer roast, is the unmistakable flavor. Our meat department is known for its broad selection, freshness and versatility.

Finns are a little too modest, because clean Finnish fish could be marketed even more. Lake fish could easily have more demand. Fish caught in Savo is fresh high quality nutrition and is available year around.

Finnish chocolate holds its own in the world because it is genuine, unique and special. Finnish salty licorice, salmiakki, is an ammonium chloride flavored licorice. It can taste both, salty or sweet.

BEFORE CHRISTMAS, Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus and the Christmas elves work hard on Christmas presents at Korvatunturi. Christmas elves are checking up on children and recording what gifts they want. On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus sets out from Korvatunturi with his team of reindeer to deliver gifts to all the good children. For Finns, Christmas Eve is the most important moment of Christmas. We stop to spend time as a family, have a traditional Christmas sauna and open Christmas gifts. Public transportation stops on 24th December in the afternoon, and most of the shops close. The exceptional operating hours during Christmas will continue until Epiphany (6th January). PARTICIPATE IN Finnish Christmas at many happenings. Santa Claus will have a branch office at Matkus Shopping Center. He will be there on the weekends in the afternoons so everyone who wants to deliver letters to him will have a chance. At Matkus, you can also see the Lucia maiden winner, and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere in the form of choir performances. You can also enjoy a traditional Finnish Christmas at Spa Hotel Rauhalahti. Rauhalahti’s Christmas festivities cater to all ages and there you can experience the Finnish smoke sauna, Christmas church and taste wonderful Christmas dishes. Churches in the Kuopio area offer a wide range of concerts and Finnish Christmas fairs during December. The traditional Christmas radio in Kuopio is broadcast on 96.3 MHz.

Kuopio Museum

THE KUOPIO Museum’s drama tutorial presents the past Savo Christmas festivities from a child's point of view. The smoke hut’s hostess picks up the visitor group from the museum’s ground floor and shifts them a hundred years back in time. In the smoke hut, the hostess tells a Christmas story about how a family in the late 1800's celebrated Christmas, and the group can participate in Christmas traditions, for example, wool carving. The Old Kuopio Museum’s Christmas exhibition allows you to experience what Christmas smelled and looked like before. The museum’s families' homes have been decorated for Christmas celebrations from the late 1800s and 1950's. Information about Christmas, a Santa Clause costume from the late 1800's and 1950's Christmas radio programmes are also featured. LET THE FROST COME 20th-29th Jan

Kuopio area

CHILDREN AND youths’ Frozen Days are celebrated at the end of January in Kuopio. The main contents of the event, held since the 1990s, are rich and varied culture and sports happenings. These will be organised by the City of Kuopio’s well-being services in cooperation with the city’s museums, libraries, sports services and educational institutions as well as a number of associations and clubs. The Frozen Circus, presented by Kuopio Circus, is a circus story about friendship intended for the whole family. Kuopio City Theatre's performances tell a story of a youth’s journey from the idyllic and peaceful countryside to the big world hustle and bustle and meeting a long-time pen pal. The whole family celebrates the Frozen Party in Kuopio, as well as in Maaninka and Nilsiä. www.kuopio.fi www.kuopionkaupunginteatteri.fi

A TRADITIONAL MARKET 27th-28th Jan

Kuopio Market Square

THE JANUARY market is part of Kuopio’s strong market tradition ever since 1782. It has been organised at its current location at the market square annually since 1856. “The market has a dedicated regular visitor base. During those two days, there are thousands of visitors coming to experience the market,” Market Supervisor Kari Laitinen says. In the old days, horses, spirits and furs changed hands at the market, just like strong sales items, handicrafts and clothing which are still sold today. Selling sweets and other delicacies is a newer market tradition. This year, the January market is held on Friday and Saturday 7:00-18:00 unlike previous years. Each year, the “market item of the year” will be chosen, and it must be Finnish, eco-friendly and a high-quality handicraft product. There will also be the traditional competition to find the best kalakukko (a Finnish delicacy of fish wrapped in dough and cooked). Vendors from all over Finland travel to Kuopio for the January market and the event itself is interesting to even random travellers. “The best part is the long tradition that the January market brings numerous specialty vendors to Kuopio. By walking through the stalls, you can find unique items which cannot be found from normal stores,” Laitinen suggests. www.kuopiontori.fi

OPERA FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY 1st Apr

Kuopio City Theatre

THIS SPRING will be unlike any before on the Kuopio City Theatre’s stage when Koirien Kalevala (Dog’s Kalevala), based on Mauri Kunnas’ books, will have its first showing on the Minna stage on April Fool's Day. The opera is directed by Virpi Rautsiala and composed by Jaakko Kuusisto, and tells a story about a wild and free dog tribe that lived in the distant lands of Kaleva. In the dark North, the tribe’s neighbour was a vicious pack of wolves and in between lived a small but resilient tribe of cats. When the dogs and wolves competed for the forest kingdom, even the feistiest battles couldn’t be avoided. The opera is a collaboration between theatre, Savonia University of Applied Sciences and Kuopio Conservatory and Musti and Mirri. The production includes over 60 performers and is in cooperation with educational institutions. www.kuopionkaupunginteatteri.fi

THE FREEZING TEST OF

endurance in Kuopio The Finland Ice Marathon skating event in Kuopio is known both in Finland and abroad. The event attracts competitive skaters, outdoor enthusiasts and school children.

T

he last week of February in Kuopio is an versatile week of winter sports. Attention turns to the ice on lake Kallavesi where the school children’s skating, ice biking, and the skating in the moonlight events take place. The week climaxes when competitive and recreational skaters take to the ice for the Finland Ice Marathon (FIM) on Saturday 25th of February. - The Finland Ice Marathon in Kuopio is Finland’s oldest and best known skating event organized on natural ice. Between 600 and 700 skaters are expected to participate in the race and fitness series, and between 3000 and 4000 are expected on Friday evening as moonlight skating is open to everyone.

MOST OF the skaters participate in the 50 ki-

lometer event where ice hockey skates and poles can be used. The elite event is the 200 kilometer race which is long and tough. FIM has attracted participants from many different countries for over 30 years, especially from Holland. Skating is an unbelievably popular sport over there, and the best natural ice skaters travel around the world to take part in marathon skating events. Successful competitors are true sporting heroes. The international element is one of the things that FIM have focused on. Holland is the sport’s home and fin would like to have both top athletes and skating enthusiasts from there in the future too. Kuopio has become well known in the skating world be-

cause of the event and we hope that our biking event will be similarly successful too. Accompanying events still draws thousands of skaters and viewers. School children’s skating day is an important part of the event, which stays long in the memory of young skaters. The School children’s skating day brings around 7000 children to the harbour and is probably the largest school sports event in our area. Children look forward to the event and come her with great enthusiasm. Finland Ice Marathon 22nd - 25th Feb 2017 Ice Biking competition 24th Feb 2017 www.finlandicemarathon.com

Skating rinks and equipment rental ONE OF KUOPIO’S best known skating tracks is the Finland Ice Marathon track on frozen lake Kallavesi. The track is down by the harbour and stretches through the Väinölänniemi area and

is available for use from February to March. Skating areas and rinks located at school sports fields and local sports areas are in use from the beginning of winter. A skating rink can be reserved

by calling +358 17 182 550 or by visiting liikuntapaikkavaraukset@kuopio.fi. If a skating rink is free however, it is open to all without payment. Skating indoors is possible in the Ice Hall www.nmt.fi

at Lippumäki. The hall is open for general use on Saturday mornings and available times can be checked at www.kuopio.fi/asiointi-ja-neuvonta/tilatori

ICE BIKING – A NEW EVENT AT LAST YEARS Finland Ice Marathon a Dutch

group covered the elite distance of 200 km on bicycles. At this year’s event an official competition will be Ice Biking, covering 50 and 100 kilometers. There aren’t any hill trails, but a more slippery surface presents a challenge for even the experienced winter cyclist. A narrow tyre roles better, but a wide tyre feels nicer and has better grip. - Cyclists use the same track as the skaters. It requires certain equipment, of course cyclists need a helmet and clothing that is water resistant and that protects against the cold. Tires with studs are also recommended.

Kuopio is one of Finland’s most significant event cities, a fact visible in all the activities happening on the streets throughout the year.

K

uopio is a lively and attractive event destination with sports, dance, theatre, comedy and concerts both in the summer and winter. Local residents, visitors from around Finland and even international tourists are interested in the various events and happenings. The Kuopio Ice Marathon during the winter and the Kuopio Dance Festival during the summer both attract a large number of international guests to Kuopio. “The goal is that by 2020 the Kuopio-Tahko area is Finland's fastest growing event and tourist area,” says the City of Kuopio event expert Kirsi Vartiainen. She continues, “These ambitious targets are possible to achieve because Kuopio has many strengths as an event town. Being a university city and surrounded by unspoilt lakes and landscapes give the tourist centre Tahko and Kuopio a trump card which other cities do not have. The city has a

I

t is nice to see three generations including children, parents and grandparents at Tahko enjoying the slopes at the same time,” says Huippupaikat Oy’s Tahko slopes Vice President Pasi Martikainen. According to Martikainen, Tahko is even more focused on increasing family tourism, taking into account even the smallest skiing fans. “During the summer, we made an easy access route to the top of the children’s slope. It supports activities in the ski school.” TAHKO’S FAMILY friendliness is also reflected in its slope safety efforts. Safety is ensured by skilled lift and slope maintenance staff and experienced Ski Patrol professionals to help in situations requiring assistance. “The Ski Patrol begins to operate as soon as the slopes open. Safety is additionally taught at the ski school, which also starts when the slopes open. Last winter there were adults, adolescents and children alike,” says Pasi Martikainen. TAHKO’S SKI season started on 11th of November, and the goal is to open the slopes completely by Finland’s Independence Day on 6th December. It is possible sooner if the snow guns can continuously fabricate snow for a couple of weeks and there are no sur-

prising heat waves. Hopefully the ski season lasts for at least 150 days. Slope entrepreneurs and skiers are expecting a long skiing season. To ensure long spring season snow guns are ready and they are brought into use as often as temperature drops below -2 celcius degrees. “The large electrical renovation has improved the opening and maintenance of slopes because it allows for more efficient and richer use of snow cannons. This season we will get the fourth new snow cat to maintain the slopes and other areas. The new equipment is also more environmentally friendly than previous ones,” smiles Martikainen. TAHKOVUORI PROVIDES numerous days of joy on the slopes. However, if you want more variation, it is easy to find nearby in the neighbouring city of Siilinjärvi. Kasurila in Siilinjärvi celebrates 30 years of having their slopes open. This special event will be celebrated in January 2017 and includes fireworks, skiing with a lit torch and an 80's-themed costume party. There will also be discounts for tickets and rentals to help celebrate the anniversary. Links: www.tahko.com, www.kasurila.com

TAKE THE SKIBUS

TO THE SLOPES Getting to Tahko this winter is convenient even without owning a car thanks to the free SkiBus. The SkiBus is operated between the Nilsiä bus station and the centre of Tahko. Depending on the snow conditions, the bus runs five times a day on weekdays and weekends from 3rd December 2016 until 16th April 2017. The SkiBus offers free rides between Nilsiä and Tahko, and the bus picks up from all the bus stops in the area. Visitors from Kuopio can also hop on the bus. The SkiBus route is provided in cooperation by Tahko slopes, Break Sokos Hotel Tahko, Skimac, Tahko-Chalet, TAHKOcom, Tahko Spa Hotel and Kuopio Tahko Marketing. The bus is operated by Linja-Autoliike E.Ahonen Ky.

Cross country ski rentals under the rock THERE ARE AS many as ten stores selling skiing equipment in Kuopio, from sports shops to supermarkets. The biggest problem though is if you don’t want to buy your own equipment but wish to rent it for a few skiing sessions. The immediate Kuopio vicinity doesn’t have a cross country ski rental shop. Kunnonpaikka and Rauhalahti spa hotels have a certain amount of ski equipment available for guests and customers, but not for general rental. Nowadays sports shops don’t rent out cross country skis. The closest rental outlet is at Tahko, where SkiMac offers a wide range of equipment for both skiing styles.

ON HORSE SAFARI TEXT NMT/OUTI KOKKARINEN PHOTO TAHKO FARMI

On a wintry horse safari you can enjoy Tahko's beautiful landscape from a new perspective and learn how to handle a horse.

The North Savo area has almost 1100 kilometers of maintained snowmobile routes. Tahko’s route network stretches to Valtimo, Sotkamo and further to the north of Finland via Rautavaara.

T

he 25 km Tahko circuit encircles Tahko. Tahko also has connections in many directions meaning there are hundreds of kilometers of snowmobile tracks to choose from. The routes vary from those suitable for beginners to interesting, more technical routes for the more experienced riders. More and more often, people are renting snowmobiles for just one person at a time, even for the whole day. - It’s easy and safe to rent a snowmobile for first timers too, tells Seikkailu Kuopio Oy’s Arto Jauhiainen. - Tahko has well marked routes, and before leaving for the trek we give operating instructions and advice about the weather conditions. The snowmobile is equipped with a tracking device and you get a GPS to take with you. The tracks or snowmobiles in the Tahko area are exceptional with regards to mainte-

T

nance and distance. Heading west you can go in the Iisalmi direction, heading north you can get to Rautavaara and further. Places for resting and sleeping are spread out appropriately along the routes. - From Tahko it’s possible to ride up the eastern border all the way to Ruka or Levi.

here's no need to fret over a cross-country tour, since you don't require previous riding experience on a low threshold horse safari. - We have a suitable mount for riders of all sizes and ages. A placid Finnhorse or a warmblood might be a better fit for the larger rider than the traditional safari horse, the Icelandic horse, or a pony, says Päivi Merikari of Tahko Farmi, which runs the safaris. On a horse safari you practice handling a horse from the beginnings. You familiarize yourself with the horse by stroking and scratching, you brush the horses and saddle them up. Before heading out into the wild you go through initial rider's training at the Farmi's field and finally leave for the cross country tour. On the tour the guide will walk the horse if necessary and parents may walk alongside young riders.

225 km of regional snowmobile tracks are maintained by Kuopio. HUNDREDS OF KILOMETERS of snow-

mobile routes in the Kuopio area allows excursions in many directions within the city area. To the west of Kuopio lies the 70 km route from Kuopio-Kaislastenlahti-Rytky-Korsujärvi-Pitkälahti-Kuopio. There are also links between Kuopio and Siilinjärvi, Nilsiä, Karttula, Suonenjoki, Leppävirta and Vehmersalmi.

In winter riding proper clothing is worth taking note of, because especially toes and finger can easily get too cold. Elastic, weatherproof and warm suit, warm gloves, warm heeled shoes and a woolly hat is a good ensemble for sub-zero weather. You can borrow a helmet and a safety vest from the stables. INDOOR EXERCISE at Tahko

T

TEXT NMT/JERE LEHTONEN PHOTOS VISIT LAKELAND

Tahko’s winter definitely includes outdoor and snow sports. However, the wide range of available indoor activities provides a nice balance.

ahko is a great destination for an active holiday. The beautiful scenery can be enjoyed while downhill skiing, cross-country skiing or snowmobiling. Nevertheless, you don’t need to worry about the weather. If the weather is really miserable outside, or even to just offset the normal outdoor sports, you can be active indoors as well. In particular, Tahko Spa offers an impressive range of indoor exercise facilities. Among others, there is a 25-metre exercise pool and a bowling alley with six bowling lanes. Also, Tahko’s Multi-Purpose Arena provides many opportunities for physical activity. Mainly badminton, floorball and table tennis are played in the hall, but basketball, volleyball, handball and futsal are all possible. The Spa Hotel’s gym is run by Huippu, a partnership which began in December 2015. When the cooperation was started, the fitness centre was expanded by 100 square metres and the equipment was modernized to meet today's needs. Huippu’s

CEO, Hannu Airila, an orienteerer on Finland’s national team, feels that Tahko is a natural and easy environment. “People who come to Tahko invest in their own well-being. That means their holiday consists of sport activities, good company and relaxation,” says Airila. “In an environment such as Tahko, life is natural and comfortable; we can offer good vibes here even on holiday. My goal is to spread the joy of physical activity and inspires people to move.” When renewing the gym equipment, special attention was paid to functional training conditions. At the same time, requested group exercise classes were added to the offered services. “During holiday seasons, we offer daily guided group exercise classes, so that people would be able to exercise even if the weather isn’t so good. During peak seasons and on holiday weeks, there is a full-time trainer at the gym so it is possible to even get personal guidance,” Airila says. www.nmt.fi

55

“Through the fitness centre, we also organise both indoor and outdoor recreational services for companies at Tahko.” Going to the gym can also serve as part of a ski holiday. Going and doing a good workout at the gym provides a valuable variation compared to only skiing, or going to stretch after an intense day of skiing or participate in a low-impact group class is very beneficial. Having nearly unlimited time and multiple choices for physical activity, both indoors and outdoors, provides a risk to stress one’s body too much. To combat that, the gym offers relaxed body conditioning classes. Combining the gym and the spa is also a good mix at the end of the day. “We don’t want to limit beneficial physical activity to just training at the gym. All exercise is good – everyday activities, chopping wood, downhill skiing - and working out at the gym can support that,” says Airila.

YOU CAN try out ice track driving on the ice of Tahkolahti lake, with the possibility to choose a ride of one hour, three hours or six hours.

THE RACE is arranged on the 10 and 11 of March by Nilsiän Urheiluautoilijat ry in the snowy scenery of Tahko. There are over 100 special trial kilometers for the competitors to carry out, including both older and brand new tracks. -The venue builds up around the central area of Tahko, treating the spectators not only with the bliss of special trials, but also with other services, states the competition’s vice director Pekka Föhr. th

th

At least 150 cars are expected to arrive at Tahko. -The rally weekend also contains extra activities, which will be announced later with more details, reveals Föhr, who has himself been driving rally since 2002. Tahko’s wide variety of hotels, villas, apartments and restaurants leave plenty of room for choice. Splendid slopes, versatile events, smooth ski tracks and a laidback atmosphere make Tahko stand out.

In connection with the festival, there is a summer seminar on health and well-being, as well as all levels of dance classes. www.kuopiodancefestival.fi COMEDY FESTIVAL 8th-10th Jun The most fun summer event is definitely Kuopio’s Comedy Festival. Held during the second weekend in June, the festival will again bring together the nation’s top comedians, comedy clubs and giggles for the whole family. www.komediafestivaali.fi

In addition to the other extensive accommodation options at Tahko, a nearby campground area was opened up to better serve festival visitors. www.tahkojuhannus.fi
