Hello and welcome to our second edition of the NNBN Digital publication – here for the North Northamptonshire community as part of the new NNBN Membership Scheme. Well what can I say since I last wrote in our first edition launched on 1st February except it’s been an exceptionally busy time for us and we are delighted with our progress and growth since we launched. The NNBN Launch at Chester House was a fantastic night for North Northamptonshire as business leaders, councillors, community groups and charities came together to celebrate our first event. Over 100 people gathered at Chester House to hear from Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, Cllr Jason Smithers, Marie and I and representatives from our Supporters, the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce and the Business & IP Centre Northamptonshire. You can read more about the launch on page 8. In the latest edition of NNBN Digital, you can read stories from across North Northamptonshire, find useful information for your business and meet a few of our local business leaders who are helping to drive our North Northamptonshire business community forward. 2
Of course, the NNBN Digital publication is only part of the jigsaw when it comes to the NNBN Membership Organisation and the publication will help keep you up to date with events, news and information from what’s going on in the area. What’s more…..it’s named the NNBN Digital publication as we will only be publishing the magazine digitally so we can consider the environment and accessibility of our readers. Wine Chateau represents a small family business supplying wines from Moldova in UK. The owners, Constantin and Cristina Paunoiu are a young couple passionate about the wine culture and heritage. The idea behind the business came after visiting few wineries in Moldova. Each time, returning to UK they brought wines as gift for their friends and many times have been asked from where these wines can be purchased in UK. As Business and Management students at Roehampton University in Birmingham Campus, Constantin and Cristina decided to transfer their knowledge into a business idea and open the first UK shop specialised in Moldovan wine. THE NNBN LAUNCH NIGHT Over 100 people attended!
Over 100 people attended the official launch of the NNBN as the new and exciting business membership organisation for North Northamptonshire was unveiled. Founding Members joined the event at the beautiful Chester House Estate where attendees heard from the visionaries behind the new organisation, Simon Cox and Marie Baker, about their story behind the NNBN, why they introduced the NNBN to the area and the membership benefits.
Superbly hosted by Jessica Pilkington from Pilkington Communications, attendees, ranging from local businesses, business support organisations, charities, town councils, community groups and Executive Members of North Northamptonshire Council also heard from the supporters of the new organisation, Cllr Jason Smithers, Leader of North Northamptonshire Council, Kate Denne from the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce and both Kirk Underwood and David Tonks from the Business & IP Centre Northamptonshire about why they are supporting the new organisation.

SANTA POD RACEWAY TEAMS UP WITH CAWLEYS TO ACCELERATE RECYCLING RATES Local recycling and resource management company, Cawleys, have stepped in to help Santa Pod Raceway drive its recycling rates forward and cross the finishing line on its environmental targets. The iconic, Santa Pod Raceway, has long been mindful of the importance of environmental issues associated with events and now that footfall is increasing after the pandemic, a sustainable approach is more important than ever for the organisation. As the home of the FIA European Drag Racing Championships, Car shows, festivals and public
track days, Santa Pod Raceway attracts thousands of visitors each year and it is committed to ensuring that the waste generated at its events causes minimal damage to the environment. Under the new partnership staff will be segregating all cardboard waste on site and glass waste in the licenced bars for recycling. As well as segregated recycling collections, general waste will be collected by Cawleys and processed through its unique Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). Cawleys’ MRF allows all general waste to be examined and sorted using sifting tools, magnets and picking lines to identify and extract items that are suitable for recycling.

Any left-over residue is diverted away from landfill and delivered to an RDF plant where it is converted into energy. Cawleys will also be onsite during popular weekend meetings to engage with the public about the benefits of waste reduction, re-use and recycling. This approach ensures that all waste is put to use in a sustainable manner. Santa Pod’s environment credentials are evolving at a rapid pace and this partnership is just the latest development in a long list of actions the organisation has taken to become eco-friendly. Recent initiatives include: • Working towards eliminating single-use plastic on site • Switching to compostable cutlery and food packaging including straws • Moving away from selling drinks in single us plastic bottles • Switching to paper or woven bags in the onsite retail and merchandise outlets. • Site ban on polystyrene • Locally sourcing stock wherever possible to reduce carbon emissions produced by transportation.
Commenting on the Santa Pod partnership, Nicky Severn, Marketing Manager at Cawleys, said: “Working with such an iconic venue as Santa Pod Raceway is very exciting. The organisation’s events are extremely popular and, as with all high footfall sites, waste can be a challenge. The solution we have in place will not only help the organisation maximise recycling rates, it will also encourage waste reduction. We will be heavily involved with the team in terms of educating visitors and staff to ensure they understand the importance of recycling.” Neale Saunders at Santa Pod, added “Reducing our environmental impact is important to us. With upwards of 400,000 visitors a year all our staff are conscious of the environmental challenges that come with being such a popular venue. On Friday 11th March, the covers were removed for the start of the 2022 Hyundai Coupe Cup, as teams met at Donington Park for the start of season media day. Amongst the teams was Desborough local, Roger Owens, who is returning to the series for a 4th year with hopes this year of running two cars in the series. Over the winter, working with Racetec motorsport, Roger has been developing a new car based on the very latest Coupe model, as well as rebuilding last year’s car ready for the new season. “We still have some work to do on the car to be competitive, no one has run this model before so we’re learning as we go.

As well as unveiling the new car, Roger Owens Racing were also very pleased to announce a new partnership with the North Northamptonshire Business Network. NEW BUSINESS RADIO SHOW COMES TO THE AIRWAVES! March 2022 saw the first radio show dedicated to business for the North Northamptonshire business community. The show, which was aired on Rushden based Beat Route Radio and hosted by Ian Griffiths where he chatted with NNBN Director Simon Cox for an hour live on air talking about business and what’s happening locally.
We are seeing businesses open back up and gaining confidence since the pandemic measures have been relaxed but there is always the cautionary feeling that “what if” we go back into strict measures. The show will help local businesses to understand what’s going on locally and signpost them to people who can assist.”
In the first show, local businesses were able to tune in to listen to local business news, support available for businesses, up and coming business events and tips and ideas across the hour. Simon and Ian chatted about the current challenges businesses are facing, details of the new NNBN Membership, the successful Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce exhibition which took place at Kettering Conference Centre in March and how the Business & IP Centre in Northamptonshire can help your business.
Beat Route Radio is excited to invite Simon to join the station adding another dimension to the programming schedule that will give local businesses the opportunity to gain valuable information all aspects of running a business.

“I staged the shot whilst walking through their factory looking for interesting locations and my client and British Vogue loved it. One of the world’s most iconic fashion and lifestyle magazines has published a picture by a highly experienced Northamptonshire photographer. Nick Freeman, of Nick Freeman Photography, is well known throughout the UK as a professional photographer who delivers eye-catching images for companies and individuals. At Poppy Design Studio we get asked ‘What is WordPress?’ a lot because we use this to create websites for our clients. WordPress is a CMS (Content Management System). A software that is used to manage web content without the need for writing the code from scratch. WordPress is the most used open source CMS worldwide with currently over 455 million websites use WordPress as of 2021, and that number only continues to grow. Considering there are about 1.3 billion total websites across the internet, that’s an impressive number.
WHO USES WORDPRESS? Millions of people and companies choose WordPress as their website platform. Many well-known brands such as Heinz Beans, BBC America, MTV News and The Offical Star Wars Blog use WordPress to power their website. WHY USE WORDPRESS? WordPress is 100% free ! The WordPress framework can be self hosted and then you can hire a web designer to create your website using its framework, or you can even sign up for a wordpress.com account and use its hosted service. Of course, as a business, you will want to self host your website and have your own domain name but you can always have a look at wordpress. com to begin to understand behind the scenes of WordPress. An advantage of using self hosted WordPress is you can add plugins to your website (explained below).
WHAT IS THE WORDPRESS DASHBOARD? The WordPress Dashboard is the administration section of your website, in other words the behind the scenes. If you installed your WordPress in the root of your domain you would access the dashboard via www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin or via your secure login URL if you have installed extra security. When you get to that page, you log in with your user name and password and then you are logged into your dashboard.

WHAT ARE WORDPRESS PLUGINS? WordPress plugins are little bits of software that extend the functionality of your WordPress website. They can be anything from adding a contact form to your pages, to adding social media widgets. It is always advisable to not overload your WordPress website with plugins, as they will eventually slow your website down but, having a few essential ones to improve your website is a fantastic idea. PAID OR FREE PLUGINS? There are millions of free and paid plugins (extensions) for WordPress. The main difference between paid and free plugins is support and extended functionality. Many websites can be created with free plugins to avoid extra costs when designing your website. That is one fantastic part of WordPress, everyone loves FREE! That being said, sometimes to get exactly what you need, you will have to put your hand in your pocket and spend a little if you want that extra function only the premium plugin version provides. Always look at the reviews of plugins, and check if the plugin is regularly updated and if it is compatible with your version of WordPress. You can find WordPress plugins by searching the WordPress plugin directory from your browser or from your WordPress dashboard.

Northampton’s archaeological collections find a new home A large collection of archaeological objects owned by the Northampton Museum and Art Gallery has moved to the new state-of-the-art, publicly accessible Archaeological Resources Centre (ARC) at the Chester House Estate near Wellingborough. The collections and archives include excavated objects from Northampton’s medieval streets such as building materials from religious houses, jewellery, costume fittings and ancient pots, which were previously spread across two stores in Northampton and Daventry. The ARC has a dedicated curator who can provide access by appointment to researchers, members of the public and school groups, allowing them to view material excavated from Northampton and across the county. Councillor Adam Brown, Deputy Leader of West Northamptonshire Council and Cabinet Member for Housing, Culture and Leisure, said: “We are really pleased that the museum’s archaeological archive is now accessible to members of the public, thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers who have spent months planning and undertaking the move.
“The ARC is bringing collections together from across the county, so Northamptonshire’s archaeology can be studied without having to visit different venues. “We anticipate that researchers from universities and organisations across the world will use the collections and we look forward to what they might uncover while using this new research facility.” The move was supported by 21 volunteers from the museum and the Chester House Estate, who gave over 300 hours of time across two weeks to photograph the boxes being moved, label crates and repack boxes. In total, 9114 boxes and 153 crates of stone objects were moved in 23 lorry loads, including quern stones used 1400 years ago to grind grains at Hunsbury Hillfort and painted plaster from Roman Villas. Councillor Helen Howell, Deputy Leader of NNC and Executive Member for Sport, Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “It is great that this collection of archaeological items has a new home at the ARC on the Chester House Estate. “Research into the archive will help contribute to the story of people across Northamptonshire from the earliest times through to the present day. I can’t wait to visit and hope that residents will enjoy this collection and the history it brings with it.” The ARC offers unique access to the archaeology of the county and collections can be viewed during tours aimed to inspire the next generation of archaeologists. Local and government leaders, including North Northamptonshire MP, Philip Hollobone, formally launched construction works at Ball Corporation’s new can-making factory at the SEGRO Park Kettering Gateway. With accelerating demand for infinitely recyclable aluminium drinks cans growing fast in the UK and around the world, Ball is investing in the new cuttingedge facility to meet the needs of its customers. This new facility will be the largest ever beverage packaging plant in the UK. Set for completion in January 2023, the site will occupy 56,000 sqm, with space to expand production later. In its first year, the plant will be producing over one billion fully recyclable cans and generate 200 local jobs. The multinational can-maker is working with key public services including Job Centre Plus to together level-up employment in the area. A celebration to mark the construction of the plant was attended today by the local MP, local councillors, and community groups. The growth in demand for aluminium cans comes as consumers seek alternatives to single-use plastic, with a recent poll showing almost 80 per cent of people are taking steps to reduce single-use plastic and two-thirds want to do more. Aluminium cans are currently the world’s most widely recycled beverage packaging, with a UK recycling rate of 82 per cent and a European average of 76 per cent. These innovative technologies will make the Kettering plant the most advanced facility of its type, demanding 20 per cent less energy and 70 per cent less water than traditional can-making processes.

WICKSTEED PARK ANNOUNCES NEW FARMYARD ATTRACTION Visitors to Wicksteed Park can enjoy a wonderful new farmyard attraction and meet the animals when the park opens fully for the season on Saturday April 2. Wicky’s Farmyard offers the chance to interact with giant rabbits, pigs, goats, barn owls, ferrets, chickens, ducks and guinea pigs in a brand-new animal-friendly enclosure. The new attraction is located at the top end of the park and entry is included in the price of a wristband, or you can buy individual tickets for £2.50 each. It is part of the park’s commitment to add even more fun and excitement for visitors and follows the opening of Meerkat Manor and the launch of the new Galaxy Invaders ride last year. All the park’s rides and attractions will be open throughout the Easter holidays, so you can enjoy rides like Dinosaur Valley and Rocky River Falls or favourites such as the Paratrooper, the Dodgems, the Train, Sway Rider, Mini Rangers, and the Carousel. ROUTE MAP SETS OUT NORTH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNCIL’S CLIMATE COMMITMENT A Climate Change Route Map which will set out how North Northamptonshire will work towards carbon neutrality is the focus of a paper before a meeting of the Council next week. Last month, the authority declared its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030 with £1million to be spent over the next three years to kick-start carbon reduction initiatives. The route map shows how the council’s commitment to be carbon neutral will need to be embedded in policy making decisions as well as through a number of bespoke projects. The blueprint shows how strategic planning policy will need to be guided by climate mitigation objectives while transport policy will include a continued drive for active travel projects such as electric bikes, the installation of more electric vehicle charging points and ongoing work with transport providers to explore accelerated adoption of electric vehicles. The climate agenda will also influence procurement procedures in the council with work undertaken to explore how the authority can make best use of local suppliers who have a commitment to reduce carbon emissions and promote green practices. The council will also produce a carbon management plan which sets out the means of capturing carbon emissions from buildings and vehicles. Cllr Harriet Pentland, the council’s

VOI-AGE CONTINUES AS NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNCILS EXTEND TRIAL Voi, West and North Northamptonshire Councils welcome today’s news to extend the region’s micromobility trial until November 2022, as e-scooters and e-bikes have proven an invaluable way of travelling around.
Jack Samler, General Manager for UK and Ireland at Voi Technology, said: “It has been such an exciting year working with West and North Northamptonshire Councils and we are delighted to have been given more time to build our vision of a cleaner, greener future for living. A recent announcement is a reflection of the close cooperation between the UK and Europe’s largest micromobility operator and the two councils to tackle the impact of the climate emergency head-on. Micromobility is a safe and sustainable alternative to the car, with almost half of Voi’s e-scooter riders adopting this as their main form of transport. This move towards micromobility can be seen by Northamptonshire riders Chante, Clive, and Luke in their recent testimonial videos. Voi’s research shows that nearly 40% of shared e-scooter riders are leaving their cars behind for the daily commute and, much like Councillor Lawman in this video below, Voi is also keen to encourage more people travelling from numerous industrial estates where their scooters are located, to ‘hop-on’. Northampton was the first place in the UK to host a Voi e-scooter trial, 18 months ago and, since then, it has expanded geographically to other towns such as Corby, Rushden and Higham Ferrers, Wellingborough and Kettering, the latter also including Voi’s e-bike service, with overall ridership reaching nearly 1.6 million and covering more than 2.3 million miles. To put this in a Northamptonshire context, this is the equivalent of 630,000 laps around Silverstone’s racetrack. The trial is now leading the way for others not only in terms of micromobility usage but also innovation. Voi has been a leader in introducing, for example, clear ID plates, mandatory safety messages and the use of geofencing technology to control speeds and riding zones.
“Over the next six months it’s critical we build on our success to show how micromobility is not only safe, convenient and sustainable, but can truly shape the way we live and get around. The extension is a vote of confidence in our ability to deliver a service for all, and we’ll continue to work with our riders, local community and key stakeholders, such as the police, to ensure micromobility is at the heart of Northamptonshire. “This trial extension will be invaluable and can only help to strengthen an already proactive and prodigious collaboration. SUPERHEROES LAUNCH FUN RUN The team at Northamptonshire Health Charity have launched their inaugural Superhero family fun run at Wicksteed Park. Charity staff dressed in capes and masks, and were welcomed by Wicky Bear to promote their exciting new event which is taking part on Sunday 3 July at the local theme park and gardens.

FARMERS, PRODUCERS AND HOSPITALITY BUSINESSES JOIN TO CELEBRATE SUSTAINABILITY A project set to shine a light on sustainability and slash food waste in the north of Northamptonshire has been launched – with food and drink businesses from across the area pledging their support and commitment to protecting the environment. The ‘Full Circle’ project, made possible thanks to funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund is providing farmers, producers, suppliers and food retailers with a trio of online platforms to help them chart their journey to sustainability and to provide a matchmaking service that will link hospitality businesses with producers and suppliers who have food produce that would otherwise go to waste. Rachel Mallows MBE, a director of Made in Northamptonshire who also heads up the Weetabix Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards, said: “The statistics are shocking. Over a third of all food produced globally goes to waste, and in the UK, we throw away around 9.5 million tonnes every year. When we waste food, we also waste all the energy and water it takes to grow, harvest, transport, and package it. And if food goes to the landfill and rots, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas even more potent than carbon dioxide. “As well as the interactive platforms our Full Circle project will include a detailed mapping exercise, so that we can create an interactive digital map and understand for the first time what and where all our food businesses, food banks and food larders are.” Jay Davenport, who is managing the project for Made In Northamptonshire, said: “Our aim is to have over 100 businesses from the north of the county signed up to our Full Circle project. We’ve already an excellent response, so if you are in the food and drink sector make sure you don’t miss out.” An early member and supporter of the project is Ganders Goat, a goat farm based near Rockingham Castle and Corby which produces soap and ice cream. 52
Co-founder of Ganders Goat, the first farm in the UK to use biodegradable and compostable packaging, Ian Horton, said: “We put sustainability and biodiversity at the forefront of everything we do which is why we are delighted to be involved with and supporting Full Circle. We see the whole process through from beginning to end, from milking our dairy goats to picking the fruits.” Rachel added: “We want all of you to make conscious decisions about where you buy your food and drink and our apps and interactive map will help you do this. Please spread the word.” Simon Cox, Co-founder of NNBN, said: “Congratulations to Rachel, Jay and the team for this innovative, exciting launch. The official launch took place at our NNBN monthly meeting, something we are proud of.” Full Circle includes three apps, which businesses signing up to the project will have access to free of charge for 12 months. These are: • Zellar – a sustainability audit app that that will enable food and drink organisations to create an online profile and document their sustainability journey. • Food Loop – which matches businesses who may be seeking to receive or use food supplies with other businesses that have unwanted produce. • Too Good to Go – which matches vulnerable people and food banks with local producers. • Full Circle is being managed by Northamptonshire ACRE and Made in Northamptonshire. Four Key Reports Every Business Needs Business finances can be daunting and they can be difficult to get your head around. Looking at reports, spreadsheets and forecasting isn't everyone's cup of tea. There's also a lot of jargon, and of course lots of numbers so it's no wonder many business owners find finance and planning overwhelming! Our aim is to get you looking at your business finances in a new light, so here's our jargon-free (well as much as it can be) guide to the four key reports every business needs. As a business owner, it is important not to lose sight of your business numbers. The data they provide is crucial in helping you understand what your business is telling you. Without them, you'll find it difficult to plan ahead. Think about it; if you don't know
2). Balance Sheet The second is the Balance Sheet. This is a measure of exactly what the worth of your business is at any one date or point in time, typically the end of the month. It includes who owes you money, whom you owe money, and where the cash is hiding in your business. If you have a computerised accounting package these reports will be readily available to you. When you run them, take a moment to ask what your business is trying to tell you. If you don’t understand, or it doesn’t feel right, talk to your bookkeeper or accountant, or come and speak to us.

Having a Budget Report will show you how you expect to make money in the next few months or years, and how much you will have to invest to get that level of income.

The first one of these is the Profit and Loss Account. This is a detailed look at the things your business has earned or spent in the period under consideration. It's here you will also need to include things that you have committed to (for example an advert in a newspaper) but have not yet paid for.
A Cashflow Report in basic terms ' follows the money'. Here you can add and monitor what will you spend when, when will you get paid by your customers, what you need to borrow and when will you repay that, etc.

SHOPPERS AND STAFF AT RUSHDEN LAKES COMMENDED FOR GREEN TRAVEL
Rushden Lakes has received an accreditation for its sustainable travel plan, making it the first retail and leisure destination to achieve this endorsement. Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accredited and Recognised) accredited Rushden Lakes with a Bronze level for its sustainable travel plan, implemented last year. This plan aimed to reduce car journeys to Rushden Lakes by 7%, and make active and sustainable travel a feasible choice for as many customers and visitors as possible. The team have worked with customers and visitors to raise awareness, highlight the benefits, and help to remove barriers to sustainable travel. As part of this a number of initiatives have been introduced at Rushden Lakes to promote sustainable travel, which have included; onsite free bike repairs and maintenance sessions, bike safety training, and providing vouchers from AJ Cycles and Decathlon The Crown Estate, working with Savills, has also been making improvements across all its places, to facilitate and promote more sustainable modes of transport for everyone travelling to its destinations. Modeshift STARS is the Centre of Excellence for the delivery of effective travel plans in education, business and community settings. The scheme recognises schools, businesses and other organisations that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.

A Kettering business owner has pledged 10 days of volunteering to Northamptonshire charities to mark a decade of trading. Sam Sayer – founder of brand, web and video specialists DeType based in Kettering – will celebrate their milestone 10-year anniversary by giving back to local organisations; Northants Community Aid, Northamptonshire Community Foundation, The Lewis Foundation, Kids Aid, and Shack Food Project. Sam, whose company name was inspired by his engineer grandfather who was the chief designer of Jaguar’s C-Type, D-Type and E-Type sports racing cars, will be fundraising, marshalling, decorating, and offering any other support which might be needed. He said: “A lot has changed since I started out from my home office as a solo businessperson 10 years ago, and I feel very proud to have grown DeType to become the innovative international creative business it is today – with most of that growth taking place in the last three years. “I have always been keen to give back, and have recently had the privilege of being welcomed onto the board of trustees at Northants Community Aid who have contributed a lot to small charities over the last few years.

RUSHDEN LAKES BECOMES UK’S VERY FIRST RETAIL PARK TO ACHIEVE GREEN TRAVEL AWARD Rushden Lakes has been commended for its commitment to green travel and crowned the UK’s very first retail park and multi-use site to receive a Modeshift STARS award. To achieve this accolade the Northamptonshire retail and leisure destination has been working with Northamptonshire based Brightwayz, a social enterprise which promotes active travel, for the last year. Rushden Lakes Centre Manager Donna French explained: “Within our travel plan we support staff parking and we want to encourage sustainable and alternative travel for our visitors to Rushden Lakes. We reached out to Brightwayz and the progress has been incredible. We surveyed staff and visitors to find out how people travelled to Rushden Lakes and from there we have held events to encourage people to walk, cycle, take a bus or use a scooter.” Modeshift STARS (Sustainable Travel Accredited and Recognised) is the UK’s leading active travel scheme and recognises schools, businesses and other organisations that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. Rushden Lakes was awarded bronze level for its sustainable travel plan, which has helped reduce car journeys by over 7%, and made active and sustainable travel a feasible choice for as many people as possible. Alison Holland, founder of active travel social enterprise Brightwayz, said: “It has been so rewarding working with Rushden Lakes and seeing staff and visitors start to embrace greener modes of transport,” said Alison.
“More surveys are planned and will be working with individual stores and outlets to identify active travel champions. We will hold another sustainable travel event later this year and are confident Rushden Lakes will achieve silver within the year.” Another way Rushden Lakes have tackled active travel has been by utilising their social media channels. Donna explained: “When Cineworld recently offered £3 tickets for all films for a whole day we knew that parking could be a challenge if everyone decided to turn up in cars. So, we hit our social media and did everything we could to encourage people to leave their cars at home and use other means of transport. It worked. On that day Stagecoach recorded a 60% increase in customers, there was a 73% increase in Voi scooter use and an extra 37% crossed the bridge into Rushden Lakes.” The Crown Estate, working with managing agents Savills, has also been making improvements across all its places, to facilitate and promote more sustainable modes of transport for everyone travelling to its destinations.
