Letter from the Editor

Striving to Bring You the Best Dear Readers, When on deadline for Thani Talk, I often don’t get much sleep, but nevertheless I love the work, because I enjoy bringing readers useful news and tips that help make your life easier, as well as informative articles that promote a better understanding of our community and the world. We Appreciate Reader Feedback The Thani Talk team worked hard last month under unusual circumstances to bring you a special edition in honor of HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Working with a new publishing program in the midst of the challenge, not everything went our way. You, loyal readers, let us know what you thought of our attempt and offered constructive critique. We heard you loud and clear and worked extra hard to improve the readability of the font and resolve other design and print quality issues. Thank you for your feedback. We hope the December issue is to your liking. We welcome comments at: nnrnews@ gmail.com. We Support Local Photographers There’s a wealth of photographic talent in Thailand, so it has been my pleasure to feature the original works of photographers in our community, especially on the Thani Talk covers. This month, we are very fortunate to showcase the stunning infrared photography of Zrs Gamboa. He expertly captured a temple image

at Ancient Siam in Samutphrakan province using the infrared technique to transform a tropical temple scene into a dreamlike winter wonderland. Enjoy this issue, and I wish everyone safe travels during the winter holidays!

Cover Story

Life After Thailand Tales of Post-Nichada Days As what’s known as a “Stayer,” I’ve seen countless dear friends come and go through the years, leaving after their Bangkok posting to return to their home countries or fly off to another foreign assignment. I try to keep in touch, but since I’m still a novice at social media, I’m often clueless about the new milestones in my friends’ lives. In this month’s cover story, I caught up with a couple of friends who used to live in Nichada. “What has your life been like after Thailand?” I asked. They kindly agreed to share their stories with you. One friend, Jane Davis, founded the first book clubs

in our neighborhood in the late 1990s. She traveled the world and is now in Ghana. Another friend, Patricia Kenrick, is a former president of NNR. She’s the one who recruited me to re-join the Board as editor of Thani Talk. Then there’s my friend Kathryn Dupuis, who worked with me at Touchstone when I edited the school’s newsletter eons ago. Kathryn is enjoying being a grandmother. Her daughter Kaitlin, the teenager I saw in school plays and on the softball field, is now a doctor with a newborn. Kaitlin also shares her story. Happy reading! Liz Lu Editor, Thani Talk

The Expat Adventures of the Davis Family to test pharmaceutical products. Visiting him gives us a chance to see Nichada Park neighbors, the Voses. We moved to South Africa when Evan graduated from ISB and capitalized on our first empty nest years with extensive travel through this varied and rewarding country -- wildlife safaris, whale watching, desert blooms and townships. We cultivated a broad group of South African friends who enhanced our appreciation of the country. Our sons joined us for trips to Namibia and Zimbabwe during our three years there.

Germany

Jane and Tom Davis met as a young couple in Germany.

Thailand The Davis Family lived in Nichada Park from 1993-1999. Both of our sons graduated from ISB and both went to University of Virginia. Alec is now Vice President of Marketing for BOOMCHICKAPOP® (get Villa to import some – amazing flavored popcorn!!) living in Minnesota with his wife, Gina. Evan is living the expat life in Amsterdam as he develops new products and markets for Lighthouse Instruments, which uses lasers 8

Had this article been written a year ago, it would have focused nostalgically on our expat life that spanned four continents. It would have talked about how our homes in Virginia and Florida were filled with vestiges of our lives in these countries.

South Africa

USA

From South Africa, we had a short stint in Belgium-sitting out the residency requirement in the EU thereby preventing our dog and cats from having to go through quarantine as we entered our time in England. Our time there brought us back into proximity to our old haunts in Western Europe where we met in the 1970s. I helped lead a book group in our last corporate posting in England and coordinated it with a series of lectures and tours called English Experience. We visited Windsor Castle, and I led a Downing Street tour that included a rare and exclusive tour into the Prime Minister’s residence. Our time in England was the longest stint we had as expats, and I became an English citizen (Tom and our sons already were citizens). We traveled extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe during our three years there.

England

December 2016

Expanding on that theme, the article would have mentioned that after Tom’s retirement from KimberlyClark (where he finished as President of Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Africa) we had traveled even more than we did as expats—sometimes in volunteer work for the International Executive Service Corps (i.e. Lebanon) and sometimes topping off that oft-cited “bucket” of life experiences in Latin America, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, the Baltic and our own great country—including watching our Packers win the Superbowl and Cardinals win the World Series At our Florida home we enjoyed the beach, and Jane started a book group that included her leading trips throughout the South (i.e. to see To Kill a Mockingbird performed at Harper Lee’s father’s courthouse, the Tennessee Williams festival and the homes of William Faulkner and Eudora Welty, etc.) At our Charlottesville Virginia home we revel in the offerings of a fine college town. It has been fun to have old Nonthaburi neighbors, the Heppners, move to Charlottesville this summer as well—they and their daughters are all UVA grads. We have stayed in touch with a wide variety of Bangkok friends, including Liz Lu who attended the 2009 Obama inauguration with me. No waxing nostalgic about expat life, however,

Ghana because a few months ago we became expats again. Tom accepted a year-long volunteer position with the Stanford Graduate School of Business SEED program and is doing pro bono consulting for emergent businesses in Western Africa (currently working with six businesses in Ghana and Nigeria). I’m volunteering with several non-profits in the area. Those of you who were around the Nichada area when I helped launch two book groups -- “Nuts about Novels in Nonthaburi” and “Of and About Asia” -- will not be surprised to learn that I’ve already started a book group in Accra, capital of Ghana. The first book we read was the critically acclaimed Homegoing—which is set in Ghana. We remain grateful for the experiences that our life as global wanderers has given us ---our time in Thailand being one of the most cherished of them all. Jane Davis

Kenrick Family Enjoying Outdoors in Texas, Lousiana & Colorado I left Thailand in June 2013 and moved back to my home state of Texas. I had not lived there in over 20 years. My husband started a rotational job in Angola, and my son was off to college. I became an empty nester in a new place. The beginning was an adjustment as there was no NNR or school community to welcome me back home. I had to seek out volunteer opportunities and social groups hoping to make new friends. In a place like Nichada, friendships just seemed to happen faster. The NNR provided lots of opportunities for getting involved socially and with local charities. A couple of things I miss the most are the friends I made in Thailand and the travels in SE Asia. It’s a part of the world I knew very little about before I moved there. Traveling in Thailand and other surrounding countries was incredible. I miss the Thai people, their calmness and smiles; truly a land of smiles. It was heartbreaking to hear about the death of the King but comforting to know he left Thailand a better place.

Other things I miss are the Thai food, especially the pomelo salad and mango sticky rice. I took several cooking classes in Bangkok but have yet to put them to use. I have relearned to cook, do laundry and iron. I miss my wonderful ladies and driver that worked for us. Hosting a dinner party is much harder without them. They were all amazing people. The benefits of returning to the states include being closer to my family, a wonderful church and grocery stores that carry everything you could possibly need and more with labels you could understand. In addition, I started enjoying more than just two seasons (rainy and hot), potable water from the tap and reconnecting with old friends. Since being back in the states I have gotten to see many amazing places. A few months ago I made a road trip to visit national parks in Colorado. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful state as it has so much to see including the Rockies, sand dunes, red rock formations, rafting and all sorts of winter sports.

My husband is now back in the states. We’re living in the New Orleans area, so I split my time between Texas and Louisiana. I was fortunate when I moved to New Orleans in that some of my former Nichada neighbors living there warmly welcomed me. One of the many blessing of living overseas is having friends around the world you can go visit, so if you’re passing through New Orleans or Austin, Texas, please look me up. One of things on my bucket list is a return visit to Thailand. I suggest to the expatriates living in Thailand or anywhere to embrace your time in that country, learn about your host country and its people, travel and volunteer. Patricia Kenrick December 2016

After 4-Nation Expat Tour, Dupuis Family Welcomes 3rd Generation in Canada We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time T.S. Eliot

Kathryn Dupuis, whose expat journey began in Singapore, was an active member of the Nichada community during the late 1990s. She left Thailand for additional postings in Malaysia and Vietnam before returning to Canada. She and husband Ron now have three grandchildren, including baby Diego, whom she is hugging and kissing above.

The above quote is what I’ve asked my kids to inscribe on my headstone, hopefully not any time soon, because eleven years of living in SE Asia taught me that where we are defines who we are. My family’s expating started in Singapore in 1996. When that foreign culture impacted my Canadian one, my unexpected response was “shields up.” Curious by nature and already a seasoned backpacking traveler, I still needed to fortify my own identity with familiar household items Haida oven mitts for example. Arriving in Bangkok one year later ( twenty years ago today ) made me understand the Singapore sobriquet “Asia Lite,” and the term “culture shock” took on a very personal meaning. Is life really a journey? If so, does there have to be this much traffic on it? On route from downtown Bangkok to Nichada Thani looking for a new “home,” I chanted my usual mantra: “ I’m either going to love this or hate this.” Our three years in Bangkok offered a new choice: “mai pen rai” (nevermind) or go insane. I hope I chose the former. I also hope I can model this attitude as well as a “jai yen” (cool heart, or stay calm) at least some of the time to my three grandchildren for the vertigo-paced world they are inheriting. In my view, you can never truly understand a different culture; however, living in one provides a chance to understand different facets of yourself. We were fortunate enough to have more countries and more chances ahead to do just that. In Malaysia, the Muslim handshake followed by a touch to the heart (“this is where I keep you now”) still fills me with joy and makes me less hasty to judge the contradictions of every culture. In Vietnam, a Tet “superstition” holds that New Year’s good luck can be guaranteed if that day’s first greeting is to someone you admire. I disdain superstition but what happened to that disdain when our building’s maids ran to greet me as soon as their shift started? Today we have been “home” in Canada for as many years as we had lived overseas. When I look out the window, I see a world I know. But when I close my eyes and remember foreign temples, friends, traffic, monsoons, snakes(!), smog, heat, humidity; now I see myself. Kathryn Dupuis

ISB Alum from 1990s Enjoys Medical Practice and Revels in Motherhood

Dr. Kaitlin Dupuis attended ISB from 1997-1999. Now living and working in Toronto, Ontario, Kaitlin and her husband Kerry recently welcomed baby Diego. I loved my time as a “third culture kid”. When it came time to move back to Canada to attend Western University, I knew I would be homesick for Southeast Asia - and I was. I loved my first snowfall back home and tobogganing down University Hill on garbage can lids in freshman year…but I also missed riding my scooter through Nichida and drinking cola from a plastic bag! After completing my undergrad in medical sciences, I was thrilled to be accepted to McMaster University for medical school. Settling on the speciality of family medicine with a focus on women’s and children's health, I now have the best job in the world -delivering babies and caring for adolescent patients at a teen drop-in clinic in downtown Toronto. I was also lucky enough to meet my husband Kerry in medical school, and we have just welcomed our first son, Diego. He is absolutely our best accomplishment to date! In our spare time, we love to travel and explore the parks and trails of Toronto with our dog, Will. Our next trips are planned for Germany for a family wedding and back to the Philippines so Diego can meet Kerry’s mom’s family. Although I’ve swapped tuk-tuk rides in Nonthaburi for Uber rides in Toronto, I like to think I’m still the “same same” girl I was then; curious, open-minded and ready for adventure! Kaitlin Dupuis

Heard it Through the Grapevine

New Post Office Opens at Nearby Oasis Complex of a friendly neighborhood branch of a modern bank. If you like to collect stamps, you’re in luck. Whereas the former ground floor branch stopped selling decorative stamps more than a year ago, the new branch has a good supply of decorative Thai stamps. Boxes, envelopes and wrapping supplies are all available for sale. The counter is stocked with glue and some tape that the staff happily shares. The new Oasis post office delivers outgoing mail to the main post office in the late afternoon. Enjoy the convenience! There’s a new neighborhood post office at the Oasis shopping complex on Samakkee Road. The former ground floor post office at Oasis moved up to the 2nd floor in early October. The new branch is bigger and more modern. Service hours are extremely convenient, from 9am to 7pm. Instead of having to stand in line, you can now take a number and sit in comfort while waiting for your number to be called. The ambiance is similar to that

Gluten-Free Goodness at Sunshine Market After searching for and trying the sparse gluten-free bakery options in Bangkok, we were delighted to find Sunshine Market on Sukhumvit Soi 31. It has good tasting breads (sandwich type and sweet in gluten-free and some dairy-free varieties) and a small selection of fresh baked cookies and desserts. The bread types change daily and are sold in 4-6 slice packets. In addition, there’s a huge selection of Bob’s Red Mill products, as well many other gluten-free and organic packaged food and beauty products. While Sunshine is not a big shop, it’s packed with options for gluten-free and organic shoppers. If you go and like it, help me work on them to get their breads in our Nichada Villa! El Mercado: Chef’s Market I've been twice to this awesome place; one time for dinner and one time for a babyshower. You can sit outside and inside and both are cosy. You can buy the best cheeses (I loved the truffle cheese), cold cuts, fish and bread. They also have great wines and oils (like truffle oil). If you are a truffle lover, you absolutely have to go here! The fish and meat on the barbecue is also so tasty; the quality is so good you can taste the difference. Some of the good things they can do: • El Mercado can marinate the meat and seafood for you. • They have a roasting service, so if you need something for Christmas, go there and they can do it for you! • They can cater your event. • They do monthly cooking classes. • You can order anything you want online, and they deliver to your house (for free when you order for more than B5000). Cozy Downtown Cafe: IWane Goes Nature Nestled in the heart of Sukhumvit, not too far from MRT Sukhumvit station, on Sukhumvit 23, you will find IWane Goes Nature. There is a cozy cafe with both inside and outside seating. They have both a breakfast and a lunch menu. We completely enjoyed the French crepe with raspberry sauce and ice cream as well as two types of pancakes, including Swedish pancakes. Or why not try the Rocky Brick Brownie with matcha ice cream and hot espresso sauce? Or one of their signature drinks? The homemade ginger ale and lime soda are one of their specialities. There are 7 well-behaved house cats to keep you company. Colleen Fielkow December 2016

NNR Textile Workshop A Study in Culture and Fashion

The NNR Textile Workshop on Nov. 21 was a delightful combination of Thai culture, textile history and fashion show. The event started with an introduction to Thai textiles by textile designer and collector Sek Mangmee, who shared with the audience his personal collection of antique textiles from each region of the Kingdom. Khun Sek was joined at the presentation by fellow textile lovers Noplapass Swisspada and Pichada See Rajavech, who helped him demonstrate the many ways of wrapping traditional cloth into an assortment of wearable fashions -- including, skirts, dresses, wraps and even Thai pantaloons. The textile workshop was organised by Khun Pichada, a customer service representative from Asian Tigers, which sponsored the event. The session was held in Nichada Park at the home of Lisa Middleton. Lisa was actually out of town on the day of the event, but she generously offered NNR the use of her spacious residence for the NNR gathering. In addition to showing selected pieces from his own textile collection, Khun Sek also shared with the audience the inspiration for some of his fabric designs. For example, one piece of fabric with diamond-shaped patterns was inspired by the iconic walls of a famous temple, he said. The idea for a piece of cerulean fabric was sparked by his love of blue and white Chinese porcelain. 34 Than

Following a coffee break, ladies who brought their own 3 metres of Thai fabric were shown how to wear them as skirts, dresses and pantaloons. With a twist here and a tuck there, gorgeous lengths of traditional fabrics were transformed into wearable art. The volunteers then modeled their new outfits, and the final group photo captured and showcased the wonderful creations of all three workshop presenters. To purchase some of Khun Sek’s unique textiles, contact him at his Facebook page: Sek Mangmee. Thank you, K. Sek, K. Pichada, and K. Noplapass, and thank you, Asian Tigers, for supporting the textile workshop as well as other cultural programs. NNR also extends its warmest thanks to Lisa Middleton for the use of her lovely home for the event. Last by not least, thank you to Susanne Rodriques and Elizabeth Bredin, tour coordinators for NNR, for coordinating the workshop. Liz Lu

Harveys Treat ESL Students to Field Trip at Local Park on Nov. 27 Bill and Mare Harvey sponsored bus rental and lunch for more than 50 adults, children and chaperones from the Bumble Bee Free Library’s free ESL program. The Nov. 27 field trip to Nonthaburi’s Chaloem Phrakiat Park offered children a chance to feed fish at the Chao Phraya River, enjoy a playground, play sports, run and enjoy the sunshine, and relax with a picnic lunch. Drinks, fruits and cookies were provided with funds donated by Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach. Bill and Mare both personally chaperoned the trip to keep the kids safe and to serve lunch and snacks. They also distributed goodie bags, containing notebooks, color pencils and Oreo cookies provided by Chevron. The Harveys also offered their car as private transport for wheel-chair bound Lidya Tefera Robi, an Ethiopian teen who is in Thailand for cancer treatment. The Bumble Bee Free Library (BBFL) has been providing house calls to Lidya, delivering books, magazines and language tapes to her apartment. Lidya’s mother Alem is a student in BBFL’s Sunday ESL class for adults. All in all, a good time was had by all! Thank you to the Harveys for their generous support! Liz Lu

Bumble Bee Free Library Fundraiser Supports Free Access to Books and ESL Classes The Bumble Bee Free Library’s first fundraiser, Cocktails and Characters, was a sold-out success thanks to the generous support of our community. Guests arrived - many in costume as a favorite literary character - and gathered in the story like garden setting of Mansions in the Park. They were greeted by the Bumble Bee’s Little Ambassadors from our free ESL class, and after receiving a Thai lei, guests mingled while eating delicious storybook themed hors d’oeuvres and desserts and sipping on margaritas and fine wine. In between drinks, guests toured the library and met some of our adult ESL students. Later in the evening, we were wowed with the talents of professional storytellers Nat and Jen Whitman. A few guests were even sent home with fabulous door prizes. The Board of The Bumble Bee Free Library would like to thank all of our guests and sponsors for supporting our efforts to burst the bubble and bring the power of our Thai and expat communities together to help children learn to read and read to learn. Funds from the event will support access to books, education and community building. Thank you for your support! Kim Ellison

PEOPLE

Profile of Wanda Grove Charity Co-Chair Makes a Difference Big and Small Wanda Grove, cochair of NNR’s Charity Committee for the past two years, is stepping down from the NNR Board of Directors in order to focus time and energy on her family and prepare for her move back to the US this upcoming year. When Wanda and her family moved from northern Virginia to Bangkok for their first overseas assignment in January 2014, political street protests and shootings worried her relatives, who urged her not to move to Thailand. But Wanda wasn’t dissuaded. The family arrived at midnight to a dark and humid capital, but the heat didn’t phase Wanda. “I’m from the South - North Carolina. Our summers are really hot like this.” There were learning curves as she learned to adjust to Thailand. Early in her stay, she hailed a taxi and asked to be taken to the United States Embassy. The driver took her to the United Nations headquarters. So, now Wanda always makes sure to say “American Embassy” and use google maps on her phone. After her husband, Steve, started his Bangkok assignment with the State Department and their daughter, Madeline, and son, Josh, were settled in at school, Wanda dove into volunteer work for the community. She signed up to be co-chair of NNR’s Welfare Committee, in charge of making recommendations to distribute proceeds from the NNR Bazaar. Another major part of the job was to stay in touch with major local charities, visiting each group at least twice a year. She also matches donors and volunteers with local organizations that need help. It’s a huge job, so Wanda shared duties with Jennifer Skobel. After Jennifer moved to Malaysia this fall, Wanda worked with co-chair Sandra Wilson. “It’s been great,” said Wanda. “Everybody in Nichada is super nice.” In addition to being an NNR Board member, Wanda is also active in the Boy Scouts program. Along with other family members, she has volunteered on numerous community projects. For example, she and Steve repaired and hand-painted a white fence outside the Bumble Bee Free Library; and her son Josh, in pursuit of his Eagle Scout badge, has submitted a proposal to help refurbish the library’s bathroom and 40

build book shelves. Wanda also enjoys her local book group as well as her favorite sport, tennis. She got interested in tennis back in the U.S. when she met a physical therapy client who was “a cute little lady in her 80s, and she still played,” said Wanda. Realizing that tennis is a sport for life, Wanda took lessons in Thailand and then joined a local tennis group. “I love the feel of the ball when I hit it--because a lot of times, I don’t!”

With her expertise and training in physical therapy, Wanda has been able to offer her advice as a volunteer to assist others. One particular case, involving a Pakistani 6-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, was especially memorable for her. The Jesuit Refugee Service had contacted Wanda for her help. Wanda worked closely with fellow volunteers, Dana Stehwien, who assisted at the Baan Fueng Faa home for disabled children and Patricia Smith, who had worked over 30 years in the US school system. It turned out that the boy, Tashif, needed custom bilateral knee ankle foot orthotics in order to walk.

The necessary leg braces made in Germany cost B60,510. The British Women’s Club pitched in B10,000 and Wanda sought help from other donors. She contacted the Pakistani parents at ISB and many families immediately funded the project. “They gave me everything and more. It was a great example of all these groups coming together.” Recently Wanda received an email from Tashif’s father. He said he and his family had resettled in Virginia, and that Tashif was doing well. “My mouth just dropped,” Wanda said. “I always wondered how Tashif was doing. She said she’ll try to visit Tashif after she returns to the U.S. “We’re Facebook friends now.” As Wanda wraps up the last 6 months of her family’s stay in Thailand, she offered sage advice for other expats. “Take advantage of all the opportunities you have here in Nichada and Bangkok, and the ability to travel to other other countries,” she said. In particular,

she highly recommends a trip to Kanchanaburi and the Oriental Kwai Resort, as well as Elephant World and the river raft trips there. Wherever her next home will be, Wanda will continue to be active in her community and giving back to help others. Said Wanda, “I was brought up to always help people, to make the world a better place” . Liz Lu

CHOKCHAI FARM – Fun and Educational

Looking for a fun and educational weekend excursion away from the city? Imagine wide open spaces, beautiful mountain views, lush green pastures dotted with black and white cows, fields of corn, flowers, dragon fruit and yes, even cowboys. Scenery is not your thing? How about mouth watering steaks or smooth, creamy ice cream? I recommend Chokchai Farm, a short 2.5-hour drive from Nichada. Recently, we visited Chokchai Farm on our way to Khao Yai National Park with our kids ages 16 and 12, and we all agreed it was fun and educational. We left early in the morning and arrived just before 10 a.m., in time for the first farm tour. Tickets are 300 baht per person. All tours are conducted in Thai only, but signs and movies have English subtitles. TIP: Pick up an English brochure at the ticket booth before the tour. The dairy farm tour started with a short movie highlighting Chokchai Farm’s beginnings, philosophies and products. Following the movie, we entered the farm and walked to the Artificial Insemination Center where the audience watched a clip on the genetically engineered process that produces the signature “Chokchai Frisian”. After the film, a short walk took us to the “Super Cow” station where we were given 44

an opportunity to milk a cow the traditional way – by hand. Next up was my favorite – the filling station. They demonstrated how milk and ice cream were filled for distribution, and at the end, everyone received a cup of delicious ice cream. After the filling station, we loaded into a tractorpulled covered wagon to tour the expansive farm. We finally stopped at the “Cowboy Station”, a.k.a. the fun and games station. We had to pay for the shooting games and activities (driving an ATV and rides on horses and ponies), but the prices were reasonable. Many Thais took advantage of this time to take pictures among the flowers and dragon fruit fields. Lastly, we enjoyed a show where Siam Cowboys featured their skills on gun twirling, trick roping and whip cracking. Caution: the whips were very loud and actually made a young child cry so be aware of this. We concluded our trip to Chokchai Farm with a delicious lunch at the steakhouse restaurant. They have a selection of imported steaks but try their local steaks which are tender, delicious, and less costly. Whether it’s a weekend excursion or you’re going on an extended vacation to Khao Yai National Park, the Chokchai Farm tour is a must visit. The farm is closed on Mondays, but you can double check their operating hours at www.farmchokchai.com before you go. Emily Lo

Restaurant Review

Hidden Backyard - A Restful Find in Nichada’s Backyard

I recently went to lunch with a friend and my mom, who was visiting from Canada, to a lovely restaurant find called the Hidden Backyard. This restaurant, like most in Bangkok, is very casual and quite eclectic. The atmosphere inside is rural and rustic. The staff seems very friendly, but only a few speak limited English. They specialize in craft beers and specialty beers, which they bring in from time to time. They serve brunch, lunch and dinner and are open Tuesday – Sunday from 11am to 11:45pm. The restaurant is not huge, but the garden is spacious with a pond and a water feature. Tables spread around the pond on grass, and patio areas have fans. I could see whiling away an evening trying various beers in good company and conversation! It is a delightful setting. They have a good variety of food of both western cuisine, including salads, pastas and appetizers, but most of the menu is Thai cuisine. They have a lovely brunch menu and dessert menu that you can order from any time. My mom had a tofu salad that she enjoyed. Crisp fried tofu with very fresh leaf lettuces and other December 2016

greens. I had a soft shelled crab salad, which also had delightful fresh leaf lettuce, cucumbers and other greens. The soft shelled crab was delicious; however, it was topped with quite a large amount of roe which I don’t care for, so I simply scooped it off on to my bread plate. My friend had the basil chicken with rice and side salad. She found it a little too spicy, so it’s best to specify one’s preference when ordering, which we did not. It was, however, a very good sized portion. We topped it off with soda water with lime; we got nice big glasses filled with ice just the way I like it. I am not sure if they offer free refills as we didn’t stay long enough to find out. All in all the bill was less than 500 baht which I thought was incredibly reasonable. If you want some place relaxing and unique, go to Hidden Backyard for a break from the buzz. Hidden Backyard can be found at: 45 Soi Chaeng Wattana Road, Nonthaburi, Telephone: 099-053-732.
