Letter from NNR Chairperson
Get Involved, Build Friendships in 2018 Welcome to a new year and, for some of you, to a new home. I hope everyone has settled into 2018 and this semester and that you are enjoying the unseasonable cool weather – for all you new folk, yes this is “winter” in Thailand. Just before the holidays, I attended the Christmas party at the Christian Care Foundation for Children with Disabilities (CCD). It was a most touching and unique experience to be part of a celebration where special needs and disadvantaged children were performing and interacting with families, eating and drinking, dancing, laughing and generally having a wonderful time. Nonthaburi Neighborhood Reach (NNR) is a not-for-profit organization of volunteers, and CCD is one of the 12 organizations we support with donations (both actual cash and in kind) and by volunteer activity. Our charity coordinators, Mare Harvey and Cyndy Henry, have been doing

an amazing job, not only managing donations, but also raising awareness within the community and coordinating volunteers with regular slots as well as special projects. NNR also publishes this free monthly magazine, Thani Talk, which is delivered to your house at the beginning of each month if you live in Nichada Thani. We organize an annual charity bazaar and host monthly socials and excursions. There are no membership dues, and everyone living in the neighborhood is already a member. Please contact any one of our NNR board members (see inside cover for details) to find out more about us, get involved in any way, or just say “Hi.” Henrietta Bullinger NNR Chairperson

Trekking in Nepal
“How Nepal Won my Heart: A Girls Hiking Trip to Poon Hill”
Nepal is a small landlocked Himalayan country in South Asia between India and China known as home to some of the highest mountains in the world including Mt. Everest. A deadly earthquake in April 2015 put the spotlight on this small nation, and tourism is only now taking off as the country attempts to recover. Nepal was on my bucket list so when I heard about a girls trip there, I didn’t hesitate to sign up! Kelly Poret organized the tour using itournepal. After taking a closer look at the itinerary, I realized I needed to prepare physically for this trek. Some of you may have spotted us training in the stairwell at N1N2 or breaking in a new pair of hiking boots with wool socks around the Nichada Lake. So much preparation, so much anticipation, but I must say the experience did not disappoint! We first took a 3-hour Thai Airways flight to Kathmandu then took a domestic flight via Yeti Airlines
10
(Buddha Air is the other option) to Pokhara where our adventure began. The domestic flight was booked by Rabi, a fun-loving guide who even did yoga with Kelly on a mountain top.
Packing for the trek was challenging for me because we had to bring clothes for 5 days, including layers for the varying weather and keep our bags under the 15kg limit for the porters. Each porter carried two 15-kg bags. Although I would recommend taking most items with you, there were many shops in Pokhara selling gear at reasonable prices. I had never used a trekking pole but it came in handy especially coming down the steep steps on Days 3 and 4. We spent our first full day in Nepal visiting the

Cover Story: Travel International Mountain Museum and the Tibetan Refugee Camp before taking a boat across the lake and climbing up to the World Peace Pagoda. From there we enjoyed some great views of the Pokhara Valley at dusk. The following day we set off to Nayapul to start our trek to Thikedunga (1,600 meters). The fairly easy 4-hour walk along the Burungdi River was a good warm-up for our first day of trekking. Day 2 was a rude awakening as we climbed the 3,000 steep stone steps to Ulleri and continued through the alpine forest to Ghorepani (2,600 meters). The climb was strenuous, but we were able to stop when needed at the many teahouses that dotted the mountain trail. Lemon ginger honey tea became a favorite. In Ghorepani the temperature was considerably colder, and I was glad I had brought some extra layers. Day 3 was in many ways our reward day. We woke up early to view the sunrise from Poon Hill. At 3,190 meters this was the highest point of the trail. We were greeted at the summit by an amazing panoramic view of the mountains as the sun illuminated the snow-covered peaks in a multitude of pinks, oranges and reds. Day 3 continued with a breath-taking walk to the village of Tadapani. We passed through the rhododendron forest before arriving early evening at our teahouse with more amazing mountain views. The Fishtail Viewtop Lodge was probably one of my favorite evenings on the trek. We had been told that the locals would gather after their evening meal and dance. It didn’t take much to persuade our young porters to share their favorite Nepalese music and moves. Such a fun memory! Day 4 was an easy walk to the charming mountain village of Ghandruk (1,900 meters) where we visited a typical Gurung house. The final day of the trek took us down to Nayapul for our drive back to Pokhara where we were able to enjoy one more evening in the lake city. For those of you who are wondering, we were able to shower every night, with a range of hot to cold showers depending on location. The accommodations were rustic but clean, and there were a variety of food choices from February 2018
delicious dal-bhat to curries, Tibetan dumplings (momos) and even some European food. Some of us brought candy to hand out to the local children. My teacher heart melted as we interacted with those precious kids who knew how to appreciate the simple things in life. The people we met in Nepal were beautiful, hard-working and warm. We spotted several generations working side-byside in the fields. We woke up to the sound of mules bringing supplies up the mountain and gained an appreciation for how accessible food and supplies are to us back home. You cannot have a successful girls trip without a little shopping. We picked up some great deals on yak products and several of us came home with mountain bells and rugs. We spent our last day in Katmandu visiting Bhaktapur with its amazing architecture and maze-like streets. The final morning before our flight back to Bangkok, some of us chose to go on a scenic airplane ride by Buddha Air near Everest. The scenic flight cost $200 USD, which seems expensive but I thought, when am I ever going back! If you opt for a helicopter ride, you can land at Everest base camp. The top of the world left me speechless! Our guide, Rabi from itournepal, did an incredible job piecing the trip together. I would highly recommend this family-operated company which organizes many tours to Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. If Nepal is on your bucket list, you can check out his website itournepal.com. Just tell him one of the Nichada “master trekkers” referred you!!

Red Lotus Lake Blossoms in January & February Udon Thani, Thailand
Each year during the cool season something magical occurs in the Nong Han Kumphawapi Lake located in the province of Udon Thani. From January-February millions of pink water lilies bloom on top of the surface of this shallow lake covering approximately 20,000 rai (7,900 acres). It’s truly the stuff fairy-tales are made of. The surface of the lake morphs from green to a blanket of buoyant, vibrant pink (not red) lilies yet is referred to as the “Red Lotus Lake or Sea.” According to the locals, the lake is a remnant of the vast swamp cited in the folk tale of Phadaeng & Nang Ai. Last February our family flew Air Asia from Don Mueang International Aiport to Udon Thani International to witness this spectacle. To allow for an early start, we arrived the night before the day we intended to visit the lake. While the rest of my family usually attempts to boycott an early rise, they have become accustomed to it as I try to capture sunrises wherever we travel. I let them grumble, knowing that what we will behold will be well worth it. I highly recommend getting to the lake between 6 am and 7 am to avoid the crowds. We chose to stay at a hotel near the airport and traveled to the lake in a rental car the morning of our visit. It took us approximately 45 minutes to get to the lake from the airport vicinity. There were multiple locations around the lake 12
with docked boats to rent at a cost of 300-500 baht per hour depending on the number of people in the group. We happened upon a great spot with a dirt parking lot, nice little coffee shop, and food tents. See Google Maps link for this location: goo.gl/ maps/ZQZW95wKXqP2 If you don’t want to rent a car, you can opt to seek out accommodation closer to the lake that offers round trip transport. Gecko Villa is a popular choice: geckovilla.com Before the sun rose we hopped into a boat with our non-English speaking navigator and jetted through the established channels. Among the bobbing blooms we witnessed a beautiful sunrise, fisherman floating by, wading herons foraging for food, and a few small islands with Buddhist

shrines on them. We spent two hours on the water marveling at the sight. Following our boat ride, we drove the rental car on a dirt road around the lake and took in the local scenery. We encountered domesticated water buffalo, small fishing villages, and a small wat. After exploring the area around the lake, we headed to Udon Thani to grab lunch prior to catching our return flight back to Bangkok. Udon Thani has an open-air mall with a wide variety of restaurants and shops. A trip to the Red Lotus Lake is a perfect weekend getaway for nature ponderers and aspiring romantics. For those who enjoy local festivals, you can go during the Talay Bua Daeng Baan (Red Lotus Sea Festival), which typically takes place the second week of January. But the lilies dazzle throughout January and February. Gesina Korte February 2018

Koh Rong Samleom, Cambodia Enchanting Isle
When someone tells you they are off to Cambodia you likely automatically think it must be Siem Reap or Phnom Pehn, but let me tell you that there is more to Cambodia than the temples. My husband travels a lot, and on a flight in September he picked up the inflight magazine which had a small write up about a place called “The One Resort” on Koh Rong Samleom. He proceeded to send me a WhatsApp message saying “Let’s go here for the next holiday.” I was sold. We found the hotel on booking.com, and we were in. However finding a way there was a bit more complicated. In the end, the only option (I thought at the time) was to fly from Bangkok to Phnom Penh (1 hour), book a taxi/bus to a place called Sihanoukville (4 hours) and finish with a 45 minute ferry ride over to this island that promised paradise. Later I found alternative routing via Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which would have saved us a taxi/bus ride, but I thought at the time, no big deal…until the moment I hustled the family into a private taxi and quickly realized that the “no road rules” in Cambodia were worse than any other Asian destination in our experiences. 14
After this trip, I truly believe Cambodia is where the game “chicken” was invented. There were moments in our 4-hour car ride that were an adventure, and there were far more where we seriously questioned whether or not we were going to make it! My recommendation: take planes all the way there!
All that said, once we were dropped off on the island in Saracen Bay, we were greeted with a place of beauty. With picture perfect beaches and blue/green water The One Resort offers large, clean, beachfront

bungalows with air-conditioning and warm water showers. It has a small restaurant and bar and is equipped with a pool, one of the only 2-3 resorts peppered along Saracen Bay to have this luxury. The food was good, but the menu was a little limited. We found ourselves wondering off to find different places to eat, finding other restaurants of a similar nature all connected to the resort they sat on. A family of four can eat well on a budget of about $150 USD/day. We found the wind on the Saracen Bay side of the island a little more than just a breeze so upon recommendation found ourselves traveling completely to the opposite side of the island by way of a 40-minute walk through a well-marked path to find a place called Lazy Beach. While Lazy Beach is open to the public, there is only one resort with 20 bungalows and a restaurant/bar that is also open to the public (except for a few days around Christmas day). We spent most of our time at the restaurant on Lazy Beach which gave us a large variety of homemade food to pick from and beer for $1.50USD! Lazy Beach Cambodia welcomes families who are looking for freedom to park themselves on one of the many seating options from hammocks to papasan style chairs to big comfy couches, or to simply grab a book and just be, well, lazy. Koh Rong Samleom is not a great place to head if you are looking for high impact adventures, but there are walking trails to a lighthouse and waterfall, some snorkeling options and dive trips offered. If you are looking for a “time out holiday then Koh Rong Samleom, Cambodia is the place to go! Chantal Bremner

Charity News
Scouts Host Party on Thai Children’s Day
Cyndy and I have been working hard in the 3 areas we identified last September - recruiting volunteers, distributing donations in kind, and giving money to NNRsupported charities. We have been having so much fun, and are really grateful for all the community support we have received. The NNR charities are always very grateful for any money or goods they receive, but they are especially excited by the volunteer response we have had so far. Interacting with volunteers gives hope that people care about them. Cyndy and I are very encouraged and pleased to see different community groups coming together to work on projects. For example, the Boy Scouts Troop 701 organized and ran the Nichada Worker’s Camp Children’s Day Party on Saturday, January 13. Scout member Will Whitworth said his troop consists of boys in grades 6-12. He also said that about 20 scouts and their families came to run the party. We would like to thank troop leader Oscar Yepes, his wife Erika, and all the boys and their families who helped out with the project. The Scouts and their families hosted about 60 children and their families from the Worker’s Camp. They set up games such as arm wrestling, bean bag toss, and dice rolling. They also set up a bouncy castle and provided lots of food and snacks. The NNR provided 10,000 baht to help fund the event, and a Nichada family provided extra snacks for the families. One of NNR’s charities, Thanksgiving 18 Than
Home, also came and provided a game and performed a magic show to entertain the kids. Regarding donations, Cyndy and I give a conservative estimated value to each donation, so that we have some idea of the value it represents to our charities. From September to December that value was 227,500 baht. Thank you so much Nichada for your continued donations. Cyndy and I match our donations to each charity, and if we can’t use the items we donate them to the White Elephant, another great group that supports local charities. Either way, your donations go to great places. We have received all manner of donations including clothes, shoes, household goods, toiletries, toys, sports equipment, and many other items. We are also grateful to have help collecting items. The Girl Scouts are helping collect toiletries for the
girls’ home on Koh Kret – Baan Kredtrakaarn. Please contact Mary Ann Morse at maryannbanker1@gmail.com or Diana Roeting at drrosen@hotmail.com to donate. The Cub Scouts are collecting bags (small suitcases, duffle bags, sport bags, and back packs) for the Baan Poomwaet boy’s home. The boys are using the bags as they transition out of the boy’s home. Please contact Sarah Perez Brogden at pack701Thailand@gmail.com or Katie Bradfield at bradfield76@gmail.com to donate.

Charity News
Breann Nishimura, a member of Encouraging Women at CCC, collected clothes, toys, and household goods for NNR charities in December. This started with shoes and snowballed from there. Thanks Breann! We are so thankful to these helpers, who enable us to widen our scope and help more people. If everyone pitches in a little, that help and generosity can go a long way. The annual NNR Bazaar provides the main source of our funding. The Bazaar team was great this year and raised a record amount of money! The NNR Board approves a funding allocation 3 times per year to pay this money out to NNR charities.
In December we gave 356,062 baht, which was used by charities to purchase a range of much-needed items, some of which are listed as follows: 12 storage boxes, book ends, 30 colouring books, crayons, low rise tables, 5 irons, 5 water heaters, 40 plastic chairs, 40 packages February 2018
of adult diapers, 10 - 4 litre bottles of Dettol, laundry detergent, floor cleaner, fruit (for 500 people), 20 desk and chair sets, educational supplies, toiletries, hair cutting scissors and clippers, shoes, underwear, protein snacks, tickets to Disney on Ice, 200 pairs of sport shorts, socks, washing machine, kitchen air exhaust vents, badminton sports equipment, Christmas presents, stand up lockers, refrigerator, rice cooker, gas stove, and stainless steel cooking table and dish sink.
It is important to note that we give away as much money as we can each year. If we have any extra money left at the end of the school year, we will give that away as well. We only hold back a small reserve to cover costs in the fall before the next bazaar. We want the charities to benefit right away with as much help as we can give. If you want to get involved with NNR Charity in any way, please contact Cyndy and I at nnrcharity@gmail. com. We appreciate any and all help we can get.

Charity: News
Fair Trade Coffee for Sale! The NNR is thrilled that the Middle School ISBean Coffee Club is supporting the NNR charity Home for Hope with the sales of their coffee. We helped sell their coffee at our December social, and the ISB Booster Club sold ISBean coffee at the season two Spirit Night.
Great team work all around! The coffee will be on sale this semester as well. All three blends of coffee use regular, non-flavored, Arabica beans. The ground coffee is perfect for a French press or drip-style coffee maker. Each bag of 250 gm is 300 baht, or 4 bags for 1000 baht. Online order info is available below. Here is more information from the teens: Middle School ISBean is a social enterprise coffee club, run by middle school students. It helps us learn about managing a business, as well as to create sustainable environments and communities in Bangkok, and in the north of Thailand. We buy Fair Trade coffee, whole beans and ground coffee in large bags from a village in the Chiang Mai region. 20
This village is called Omgoi. We order the coffee through a company called Thai High. As soon as the coffee gets to us, we package the beans and grounds ourselves. And we label, sticker, and seal the packaged coffee bags ourselves. We then sell our coffee at school events, the Booster Hut, and on individual sale days. The three roasts we sell are: Cherrymed roast, Wild Honey-light roast, and Brown Peaberry-dark roast. With the money we make, we help a Nonthaburi organization called Home for Hope, a residential facility managed by Father Paolo of our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. They sustain safe homes for children whose parents cannot care for them due to a variety of reasons. Up to 90 children use this home as their home. We will donate our money to them, buy supplies, and are currently trying to organize a trip to the house. With your purchases, we can help these kids in need, and change their lives. We will be selling coffee at upcoming ISB events. Please see ISB’s Parent Portal News for dates. Online orders are available for pick-up on Mondays after school from 2:30-3:00 in front of the school by the Panther, please use the link below. goo.gl/forms/VG7g586UGiA98Ucf2

** Spotlight on Volunteers **
Liz & Mike Lazich Love Teaching English to Local Kids
My husband Mike and I are originally from Pennsylvania, USA. We have two sons, Jake and Dalton. Jake attends University of California, Santa Barbara, and Dalton is a junior at ISB. We have been in Thailand for about two years. Our charity, the Bumble Bee Free Library (BBFL), supports neighbors close to Nichada who wish to improve their English skills. We prepare lessons and teach English classes to children and adults We spend two hours per week teaching. These volunteer opportunities are so rewarding! The students are full of energy and very appreciative. My favorite is walking into the local Starbucks or 7/11, and hearing a student say, in English, “Hello teacher. How are you today? At BBFL class, we have about five pretty constant volunteers and more who come when they can. We are always looking for teachers, assistants, and often, just people who would be willing to play a board game with some Thai children. IKEA is Coming -- Closer!
Nonthaburi Branch to Open on March 15
InsideRetailAsia
ScandAsia
One might conclude, perusing the contents of the neighborhood yard sale page, that the path between the existing Ikea in Bang Na and Nichada is a well traveled one. But on March 15th we'll be able to get to Ikea in far less time, and we'll get to explore the brand new Ikea at Central Westgate! Construction on the new Ikea has taken just over two years and when completed will be the largest Ikea store in Southeast Asia, with over 50,000 square meters of retail space. The two-story structure will connect directly to all levels of Central Westgate Mall and to the Bang Yai MRT station. The store will include 29 checkout stands - 3 more than Bang Na's store! The canteen will also have a few menu items that are unique to this store. A third Ikea is planned in the northern suburbs. Google estimates a 25 minute route by car in average Sunday morning traffic conditions. Or you can take the MRT’s Purple Line direct to Westgate. 109 Moo 6, Tambon Sao, Bang Yai, Nonthaburi. www.ikea.co.th Susan Yates
Sky Lane for Bikers at Suvarnabhumi
Sky Lane is a 23.5 km, 4-lane bicycle track that goes around Suvarnabhumi Airport. Built as a collaborative project between Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) and Airports of Thailand PLC (AOT), it closed last April 2017 for renovations and reopened (track only) on Dec. 23, 2017. It is currently open from Saturday to Wednesday only and closed Thursday and Fridays for continuation/ 26
completion of the construction of shops and other facilities. Construction of the shops is estimated to be finished by the end of February, but...take that with a pinch of salt. Opening times are from 6 am to 7 pm. Take note, riders will need rear blinker lights if riding early before sunrise and after sunset. Helmets must be worn at all times and closed-toed shoes likewise. (No slippers or sandals allowed). Proper cycling water bottles only. No plastic mineral water bottles allowed. The Sky Lane now has four lanes: 2 blue lanes to the left are intended for slower riders (i.e. anyone who rides slower than 35 kph. The two purple lanes (the color purple is a nod to the signature purple of Siam Commercial Bank’s logo) are for faster riders (those who ride faster than 35 kph). Who is the Sky Lane for? Serious riders and fitness enthusiasts. Due to its length it is not intended for younger children below 12 years-old. There will a 2km “Junior” track available soon.

K. Sa-oat and K. Maew Take Dream Vacation to Chiang Mai
Part III of the Adventures of K. Saoat and K. Maew: With donations from their milk route customers and other community supporters, they finally took that dream vacation during new year’s break! In the October 2017 issue of Thani Talk magazine, readers met the charming husband and wife team who deliver milk and other perishables to residents in the Nichada Thani neighborhood. They shared details of their long days working, and of never having taken a break in decades. The December issue featured a story about how readers surprised them with a cash gift to make their dream trip to northern Thailand possible. The happy couple recently shared photos of their holiday trip. They enjoyed visiting waterfalls and temples, relaxing in cooler mountain temperatures, and spending time with relatives. Both of them would like to thank all their friends and supporters in the community for the trip of a lifetime. Liz Lu February 2018

Nichada Family Clinic Delays Closing Date The flu hit Nichada and ISB hard in January as it has many places locally and globally this season. Thankfully Bumrungrad’s Nichada Family Clinic delayed its closing until 31 March 2018. Given the timing of the flu outbreak just after the school holiday along with the other viruses floating around, Nichada residents were glad the clinic extended the inevitable a few months. There was an upsurge in patients to start the New Year who were grateful for the ability to see a physician who could order onsite testing in Nichada to rule out or confirm the nature of their illness. Bumrungrad remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of service for clinic patients when they do close on March 31; but for now, Nichada residents are thankful for the few extra months the clinic is “just around the corner”. Please note the new hours and phone number! The clinic is open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, and the new contact number is 02 011 5895. Keep washing those hands and stay healthy everyone! Ginny Condra 28

Khun Bouy, Dressmaker Who Makes Housecalls Khun Bouy is a talented dressmaker in Pakkret. She visits your home and takes thorough measurements to make anything you can imagine - from a sketch or a photo or by copying an existing garment you have. She also handled some alterations. She usually brings her teenage daughter along to help translate. I already had the fabric I wanted her to use, but when a friend didn’t know exactly what would be needed for the dress, she offered to take her shopping. We emailed to schedule appointments and the work was returned promptly and finished perfectly! Susan Yates

Tiwanon Print Shop is my go-to place for banners and signs. In my role as the ISB PTA Adult Education Coordinator, I’ve used them to print both banners and free-standing signs. They’ve also printed banners for my personal use. They are located relatively close to Nichada - less than a 20-minute drive. I arrive at the shop with my thumb drive in hand. Khun Golf, who speaks great English, greets me and hands me off to one of his employees who takes my file and “cleans it up” for printing. I’m informed of the price (which is usually cheaper than expected!), I pay, and I’m on my way - usually in less than 15 minutes. Most orders are ready the same day, or next day at the latest. They have many different types of advertising solutions on display in their shop if you’re not quite sure what you want. My jobs are always turned around quickly, on time, and for a very reasonable cost. Highly recommended!

Shaman Arts: Artist Khun Greek Teaches Sketching & Painting We are so fortunate to have an art studio inside Nichada, located above Villa. Khun Greek at Shaman Arts offers drawing, acrylic and watercolor workshops. As a beginner, I chose to start with acrylics. I had an idea of what I wanted to paint and Khun Greek helped me to find a photo to copy then guided me through the entire process. A friend and I had a great fun couple of mornings painting and chatting while we enjoyed coffee and snacks from Cherry’s next door! The schedule is very flexible, all materials are provided, and Khun Greek is a knowledgeable and engaging teacher. I am planning to go back to focus on improving my drawing skills and will take my kids along for some drawing classes too. Highly recommended for a fun and relaxing activity with friends or family, right within our neighbourhood! https://www.facebook.com/shamanart4mind/ Imogen Lee Shaman Arts Classes for kids and adults. Ngamwongwan Fresh Market For those looking for local fresh produce, Ngamwongwan fresh market may just be the place. Located under the Srirat Highway opposite Soi Sammakee 58/10, it opened less than a year ago and is a convenient market to drop by for local vegetables, eggs, fish, meat, fruit and so forth. The best time to go is early in the morning when the produce is still fresh, and the weather is not so hot. Buying by the kilo is cheaper than buying a few hundred grams. Unlike many fresh markets around the Sammakee area, you can still find a parking space at this market. Netra Ruthaiyanont February 2018

Haakon Brekke
Norwegian but Thai at Heart Former Nichada resident Haakon Brekke has returned to the Land of Smiles to work for Boston Consulting Group, and in his spare time, he is back leading Kids Action for Kids to provide lifechanging surgeries that give children back their smiles. In 2009, Haakon and his younger brothers Martin and Anders cofounded Kids Action for Kids (KAFK), a non-profit group registered in the family's native Norway. KAFK's mission is to raise money for surgeries that correct cleft palate and cleft lip for underprivileged patients in Southeast Asia. The cause is a passion shared by their mother Torgunn Aas Reggestad, as well as many friends and neighbors in Nichada and other parts of the world. Haakon, who graduated from ISB in 2011, remembers how the spirit of giving was sparked by their cousins' visit to Thailand. "We wanted to show them the real Thailand other than the beach," he said. The teens visited Phayathai Babies Home, an eye-opening experience. "You feel a bit uncomfortable because of the opportunities you have that they don't have," he said. So all the cousins launched their A young Haakon first fundraiser, a flea market, volunteering at to fund their first project -Phayathai Babies Home renovation of two playrooms at the Phayathai Babies Home. Later Haakon and his brothers founded Kids Action for Kids, which encouraged charity work by children and others in the community. KAFK soon developed a 3-pronged strategy by partnering with the Benchachinda group, an Information Communication Technology company, and Operation Smile Thailand. KAFK mobilized its supporters to focus on fundraising, with the Benchachinda group matching every baht raised, and with 42
Operation Smile Thailand handling the administrative end of surgery missions. Why did the brothers decide to support cleft surgeries? "Those operations last forever compared to playgrounds and toys," said Haakon. The operation makes a huge difference in their lives. It's so concrete. You see the impact you have." Upon his college graduation in 2015, Haakon resumed his position as KAFK chairman. The brothers' shared dedication to KAFK was not the only passion they had in common. All three were competitive swimmers, both at ISB and in college. In fact, while second brother Martin continued competitive swimming at New York University, youngest brother Anders followed Haakon's career, not only in swimming but in academics as well, also choosing to attend Colgate University and joining the swim team there. Anders even chose the same double major as Haakon: Economics and Chinese. "I paved the way," Haakon said, laughing. "Now they say that they looked up to me." Haakon recalls how as a toddler, Martin did not like water, but later, his younger brother took an interest in swimming. When Haakon left for 5:30 am swim practice, Martin would follow. "He sat in the bleachers just to watch," Haakon said. "Suddenly he got this obsession." Haakon said he told his younger brother "Don't get your hopes too high."

His mother, Torgunn, who also loves Thailand, splits her time between Norway and Thailand, where she stays for half the year. At 24, Haakon is ready to chase his dreams. "I'm flexible. I don't have a wife or kids. I can move around." Just as he was super focused on succeeding in competitive swimming, Haakon is now focused on building a career and devoting energy to KAFK. His guiding mantra and work ethic as a swimmer applies equally to his profession and KAFK commitment. Said Haakon, "You get out what you put in." "I really enjoy consulting," said Haakon. He is also getting ready for KAFK's upcoming surgery mission trip to Myanmar in May and a trip to Korat, Thailand in September. “Now that I've moved back, I started taking Thai class," he said. Tony’s Kitchen: A Neighborhood Favorite
Most of you already know and frequent Tony’s Kitchen in our very own Sichaithong neighborhood. For those of you who do not, you will become a regular once you get to taste their simple, everyday, yet particularly delicious Thai food. The menu of the establishment features only eight types of various Thai dishes, ranging from Khao Pad (fried rice) to Pad Krapow (spicy, stir fried meat with Thai basil) and others. Almost every dish is sold at a price of 50 – 80 baht each. Pad Krapow, to Thai people, is like hamburgers to Americans. Yet most Pad Krapow I’ve tasted in the area is laden with MSG that makes it almost too sweet. Tony’s Pad Krapow is a perfect blend of chilies, nam pla (fish sauce), a bit of sugar and NO MSG. I know for sure because my child is allergic, and I make sure to ask if they put MSG in their food every time we eat out. The
roasted chicken with rice is another one of my husband’s favorite dishes. The chicken thigh is prepared beforehand and comes with a tamarind / pepper sauce. Every dish is served with free clear hot soup! I learned that Tony himself graduated from a chef school in Australia and had lived and worked in Sydney for ten years. Around two years ago, he and his family (his wife, Khun Chon, and his son) decided to move back to Thailand. Tony was at first going to work at the Holiday Inn, Chiang Mai, but it wasn’t meant to be. Their first restaurant was opened on the ground floor of their house on Sichaithong Soi 6. They started out selling only a few basic dishes, such as roasted chicken with rice and Pad Thai. Customers started requesting they expand to a bigger space with more seatings. This led to the current location, which opened two months ago, on the Sichaithong main road. Without any advertisement the restaurant can be seen packed with office workers and locals around lunch time. Tony cooks almost every dish served there. Every sauce in every dish is prepared before hand, making sure the consistency of the taste is maintained. He said even if you ordered 20 boxes of packed lunch, he would still cook it one by one. He said it just won’t taste the same if you do it in big batches. Tony’s Kitchen is opened every day except Saturday from 8 am to 8 pm. There’s limited parking for golf carts and cars. Try to avoid peak lunch time. While you are there, check out Moka Mania across the little Sichaithong Soi 6 street from Tony’s Kitchen. They make a mean, strong coffee that will keep you going almost all day. Vara Sumetanon Tony’s Kitchen ID Line: ton-siri Tel: 088-564-6955 Facebook: tonykitchen0885646955
