LETTER FROM SANDY
DEAR MEMBERS, So many things are happening at the Beach and Golf Club this season! Everything about the season in Naples is exploding, including the beautiful weather, the energy of the city (since awarded the healthiest and happiest in the United States), and having many of our members back in residence. Season kicked off with great events from the very entertaining Motown dance night, the Fashion Shows by Well-Read and Marilyn’s on Fifth, to the Lecture Series on Naples Beach Homes, Cottages and Castles, which were all successful, fun and informative, with more to come. As you know, we installed a completely new computer system in the resort and club this past fall. As with any new system, there are glitches, challenges and opportunities. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced while we implemented the system. Our overall goal has been protection and security for our members during our overall technology transition. Easter falls Mid-April this year so we are in for a lengthier fun filled season ahead. Naples will be jamming with visitors, which means we will be busy at the Club. Because we understand that every family visit and time spent

with the grandchildren is a memory built for years to come, we want to make sure you have a pleasurable club experience. For that reason, in this issue of The View, we have an article on tips to better enjoy your Club. Each time you visit the Club, we will ask for your membership identification card throughout the various outlets. Yes, it’s true, we know your name and we recognize you, and many of you we have known for years. Yet, please don’t be offended when the team asks for your card. They are following company policy. The best analogy that I can provide is that most of you evolve from the business world, so you understand logistics, reporting and data analysis, company security, and overall business practices, and since we are operating a business and a club, we follow the same approach. Yet the most important factor is that your card ensures all charges go to the proper account. Plus, it’s the only way to get your preferred pricing! We sincerely thank you for presenting your Membership Card while at the Club. Karen Nardella, Member Services, has an article on the many ways to keep in touch with LaPlaya. Also, if travel is in your plans, check out the Noble House Hotels and Resorts website at www.noblehousehotels.com to preview our luxury boutique hotels and exclusive resorts in elegant destinations. Whatever your preferences – beach, golf, spa or dining – we will be waiting to see you at the Club! Sandy Cotter Director of Membership

THE VALUE OF
COMPOUNDING And now you know….the rest of the story….. To borrow radio personality the late Paul Harvey’s catch phrase, this seems appropriate to share the back story of how Saturday, February 4th, 2017 became Billy (& Audrey) Heck day. It also marked the conclusion of the Men’s & Ladies 2017 Member / Member Championship, and congratulations go to all the winners, both Gross & Net divisions! To cap off a memorable day Dr. Glenn Stevens arranged a special occasion to recognize and pay tribute to long time LaPlaya G.C. Starter, Billy Heck. Club members who participated in the field of 84 players were gathered, as were other members and staff who wished to be there to lend their support. Dr (Doc) Stevens hatched this idea only 3 weeks ago when he heard that the Collings Foundation was coming to town. This organization finds, restores and flies all manner of planes from years gone by; however they specialize in World War II vintage combat planes. For a fee, members of the public can ride as a passenger in one of those planes as they travel from one venue onto the next. Glenn wanted to organize this for Billy, (96 years young) a former ‘Hellcat’ pilot in WWII operating in the Pacific theater. As Billy has been missing from the 1st tee recently due to recent health set backs, flying wasn’t an option; just for right now. Instead monies raised by the members and the club would be forwarded to the Foundation for the restoration of a Hellcat Plane in Billy’s name. The trick was to convince Billy to be at the Golf Club to present him with a commemorative picture of a flying Hellcat plane and let him in on Glenn’s plan. LaPlaya Club Newsletter | Vol 88
Billy, (& Audrey) of a certain Generation (the Greatest) didn’t want any fuss, and was uncomfortably suspicious when Glenn called him 3 days beforehand to invite him to the club, the members want to recognize you. “WHAT FOR, I’m embarrassed!?” was the usual reply. Upon learning of this Director of Golf Ben Bryant, yes Director, nudged the process along by suggesting to keep Billy ‘fully’ informed about the plans. That did the trick, upon learning about the Hellcat and monies being raised on his behalf, “What an honor. We’ll be there. What time!?” Billy & Audrey arrived at 1:40pm sharp to a standing ovation from the membership, and Master of Ceremonies Glenn ‘Doc’ Stevens, supported by Ben, Laurel, Joanna, Cheryl Debbie, Terry, Jay Johnson and team paid a wonderful tribute to Billy, thanking him for his service to our club, and of course our country! The Members all raised a glass of bubbly, toasted our friend and great patriot, and finished off with one verse of America, My Country, ‘tis of Thee “My country, ’tis of Thee, Sweet Land of Liberty Of thee I sing; Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrims’ pride, From every mountain side Let Freedom ring.” Thank you Billy & Audrey Heck. And now you know… the rest of the story! Have a great March/April 2017 everyone! Enjoy your club. Yours Aye, Alan

GOLF TIP Pitching 10-50 Yard shots: I see so many players try to scoop the ball with their hands with the shots that are not a full swing. Even if you hit it solid, it doesn't go the distance because when you scoop, you add more loft to your wedge. You still want to use your core to turn through the ball. Think of it as a mini swing. You can put a little more weight on your front foot like a chip. You do not need a big weight shift, but you do need to turn your body and arms through together. Practice with a ball between your arms. This will give you that feel of using your core going back and through the shot while staying connected. This does take some practice to get used to how long of a swing to use and how much energy to use for your distances. The better you get at this, the lower your scores get. You will be amazed at how much straighter these shots become. Not as many pulls to the left (Opposite for lefties). Ask about the impact ball in the Pro Shop. Good Luck! Laurel Kean LPGA Professional

DEAR MEMBERS,
Cherry Glazed Baked Ham
During the winter months, the amount of play on the golf course has increased dramatically. In order that the additional traffic does not affect playability, we ask all members and guests to observe proper etiquette and assist in the repair of ball marks, the filling of divots and minding of directional signage during their round. Quite often, the golf ball will impact the front of the green and roll toward the back. As a result of this, the front portions of the greens often have more unrepaired ball marks. Encourage your playing partners to fix their own ball mark plus one more in order that the putting surfaces remain as pristine as possible all season long. In addition, the amount of divots will also increase as rounds increase. A divot that is not filled with sand will take twice as long to heal. This issue is of particular importance on Par 3 tees and fairway landing areas. In order that we may preserve the condition of our roughs throughout the season, we ask the carts be driven in the overseeded fairways as much as possible. This grass has a higher growth rate in the cooler months and will be more resilient to the increased vehicle traffic. As the soil temperatures increase, the rate of growth of our native Bermuda grass will increase as well. Thanks very much for your continued assistance! Patrick Lewins Golf Course Superintendent

LETTER FROM BEN
DEAR MEMBERS, The season is moving along and the weather is quite nice. Patrick’s team has the course in nice condition. In the Golf Shop, there are a few new lines of merchandise. For the Ladies’, there are JOFIT and San Soleil and for the Men, we just received a shipment of LevelWear. If there is something that you would like in the way of merchandise and we do not have it in the Golf Shop, please let us know and we will get it for you. Listed below are the upcoming golf events for March and April. • Club Championships – March 3 & 4 – Ladies’ and Men’s Divisions ҊҊ Format: Stroke Play 2 Days – Flighted ҊҊ Overall Club Champions determined by lowest 2 day gross scores ҊҊ Flight Winners determined by lowest 2 day net scores ҊҊ All Flights will be repaired by score for Round 2 ҊҊ Round 1: Tee Times begin at 12 PM ҊҊ Round 2: Tee Times begin at 8 AM • Men’s Invitational – March 9, 10 & 11 ҊҊ Course Closed Thursday, March 9 all Day ҊҊ Practice Facility Open at 12:30 PM for all non playing members • Dozen and Dinner – March 17 – St. Patty’s Day Theme – 3 PM Shotgun • Men’s Closing Day – April 5 – 8:30 AM Shotgun • Ladies’ Closing Day – April 6 – 8:30 AM Shotgun • Dozen and Dinner – April 7 – 3:30 PM Shotgun January through April, morning tee times are available beginning at 7:30 AM alternating every 8 and 9 minutes through 12:02 PM to allow more access to the desired morning tee times for all members. The effectiveness of this comes when the last player in each group to tee off is hitting their drive so the group can leave the tee at the scheduled tee time, not arriving at the tee at the scheduled tee time and then beginning to tee off. This helps create proper spacing between groups and allows for a good pace of play.
An 18 hole round should take no longer than 4 hours. As it is high season, please remember twosomes that are scheduled in the morning will be paired with other singles and twosomes to provide a better pace for your group and all other players during the day. The afternoons are a little less busy and allow for a faster pace of play for singles and twosomes. Congratulations to all of the following event winners: • October 9 and Dine ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Hauser and Mr. & Mrs. Hanson ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Spiller and Mrs. Altemus & Mr. Moeller ҊҊ November 9 and Dine ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Coyne and Mrs. LeBlanc & Mr. Brenner ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Cusimano and Mr. & Mrs. Grandin • December 9 and Dine ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Norcia and Mr. & Mrs. Bloom ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Fitzgerald and Mr. & Mrs. Kohn ҊҊ January 9 and Dine ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Neeson and Mr. & Mrs. VanderMolen ҊҊ Mr. & Mrs. Skowronski and Mr. & Mrs. Bloom • Opening Day Mixer ҊҊ Mrs. Mattera, Mrs. Middendorf, Mr. Denucci and Mr. Treadwell Lastly, please take care of your course by repairing your ball mark and one other, raking bunkers, watching your footsteps on the greens and sanding your divots in the fairway. Respectfully, Ben Bryant, PGA
