Editorial Here is the New Carconcept Magazine: Carconcept is a new magazine on the horizon. A Dutch publication written in English. The first number will appear in the first quarter of 2009 than as a quaterly and later on 6 times a year. Carconcept (has a unique formula: it) is designed to share the ideas, the curiosity and passion of car lovers, of car makers and OEM* parts manufacturers, by writing about concept cars, future trends, exceptional automobiles, and (brand) new automotive technologies. It will provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between car lovers and professionals, between those who build the cars and those who drive them. It will also take you back to technical solutions of the past, the legendary cars and car designers of yesterday, with an eye to their influence on the future. Like the Alfa 8C Competizione, the Gran Turismo which received resounding global praise; the new “discovery” will be produced in a limited edition run of 500. Elaborated by the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, the new car re-affirms the brand’s excellence in this sector, as shown by some Spider’s being regarded among the most beautiful cars in global automotive history. Cars such as the Giulietta Spider from the 50’s or the legendary Duetto made famous by “The Graduate” from 1967 with a young Dustin Hoffman. Today, it’s the Alfa 8C Spider’s turn to take centre stage and project into the future the values of technology and emotion which belong to the Alfa Romeo legacy. Obviously, the new vehicle inherits all the winning features of the Coupé version. Starting with the two “sport seats” setup and the fascinating exterior lines, which characterized by sculpted and finely designed bodywork, “dress” the automotive and mechanical excellence of the model.

In detail, the marked dynamics of the vehicle are highlighted by the horizontal groove “built” into the bonnet at wheel level. The oversize wheels and powerful “muscles” of the rear mudguard accentuate the personality and force of the model, without diminishing the elegance of those fluid lines. Instead they highlight the formal beauty of the singular external features: the “teardrop” fog lights set like a precious jewel in the front mudguard, the front Led lights, a synthesis of technology and rationality, and the essential door handle. Furthermore, in the front we can find the

characteristic Alfa Romeo stylings, with a new interpretaion of the “whiskers” and shield. Without forgetting, that this innovative range anticipates the elements and proportions of the future Alfa Romeo cars, always with complete respect for the historical legacy of the brand. It’s worth underlining that to reach these top levels of areo-dynamic efficiency, solutions which don’t limit themselves to the design of the form have been adopted on the Alfa 8C Spider. All the surfaces and profiles of the uprights and windows, together with the form and positioning of the rear-view mirrors, have been optimized

using computer models and tests in wind tunnels and real-life environments. As a result, air flows round the vehicle following it’s natural path, unhampered by corners and irregularities. The end result is a negative LC (lift coefficient) which like competition vehicles, contributes to stability at high speeds. But the peculiarity of this vehicle, is the hooded top fitted with electro-hydraulic automatic control (controllable via a button on the dashboard). The hooded top of the Alfa 8C Spider is composed of two overlapping sheets: the external one is made with a multi-thread textile which can


adjusted according to the physical characteristics of the driver (up to now, a feature only available to racing cars). Furthermore, for maximum possible personalization of the interior, the client can chose between different environments and aesthetic solutions. All distinguishable by the particular attention to detail and artisan workmanship: from the contrasting stitches, colour tone and exclusive matchings. The bucket seats are upholstered in Frau flower leather (an exclusive and innovative treatment of the weave, in which the leather is bound to a natural fibre, creating a look of great visual impact). In analogous fashion to the interior, the same care has been taken in realizing the exteriors: from the alloy wheels to the brake calipers, every detail can be chosen to your particular design,

withstand the elements, whilst the interior has high sound-proofing qualities. Furthermore, the hooded roof-top, available in various colours, has been perfected aesthetically, aerodynamically and for acoustic comfort. It has also been perfected from a functional point of view, with specially developed film-reels to render more agile, rapid and secure any explanations of the functioning. In the interior, the Alfa 8C Spider guarantees a sophisticated environment, thanks to the vast use of composite materials in the dashboard and internal panels, as well as the use of anatomical seats, produced in carbon fibres, that can be

The unique and un-repeatable Alfa 8C Spider announces the pleasure of a sporty drive with full respect for the brand’s legacy. Like in the best Alfa Romeo tradition, hidden under this pretty “dress” is the best of what’s available in the field of mechanics and propulsions. Firstly, the Alfa 8C Spider has a rigid and light structure (the compact frame is made in steel for maximum torsion to guarantee a drive which is always precise and sure, whilst the body is in carbon fibre). We are dealing with a choice motivated by the need to reduce as much as possible the weight but also to optimize the centre of gravity for agility and drive-ability in the more demanding journeys. Still under the banner of sophisticated technology, the Alfa 8C Spider adopts the new “8 cylinder mated to a 5-speed gearbox with 90°” and a capacity of 4691 cm3 which has been designed with one specific aim: guarantee

extraordinary performances without relinquishing the fluidity of the gearshift or the ease of use in any driving context. Like so, a powerful and progressive propulsion is born with a top power of 450 CV at 7.000 rpm and a maximum torque of 7.500 rpm. This engine has been mated to a self-shifting 6-speed gearshift (with computerized selection of the gears via levers behind the steering-wheel), and a self-blocking differential unit. As in the legendary Formula 1 vehicles from the 50’s, the Alfa 8C Spider sports the Transaxle design which guarantees the best equilibrium in the partioning of weight. The propulsion is placed in the rear whilst the gearshift is placed behind along the differential and hydraulic motor unit. The Transaxle design foresees a tight connection between motor and gearshift, which is fitted with a self-blocking differential. The two groups are linked by a tubular element, at the interior of which rotates the transmission driving shaft: in this manner the load is distributed in an optimal manner between the front and rear suspension. So much power can only be entrusted to an excellent braking system: the Alfa 8C Spider is fitted with carbo-ceramic Brembo (CCM), 380 mm in diameter on the front-wheels and 360 mm on the back-wheels. This solution guarantees a powerful brake action even in the most intense uses. The marked reduction in weight, in comparison to a traditional set-up, reduces the masses unsupported by the vehicle and so improves the dynamic performance and driving comfort. Furthermore, the mono-block calipers guarantee maximum rigidity and minimal deformation, given the high loads generated by the pressure of the pistons on the brake-linings. Therefore, the Alfa 8C Spider “declares itself Alfa” all the way, confirming control and driving pleasure with no compromises. Since always, gear comfort and dynamic performance are qualities specific to Alfa Romeo cars: in this case they have become veritable strong points. Thanks to for example, the suspensions which foresee a high wishbone suspension with brackets and uprights in forged aluminium, that act as a supplementary strut for alignment control. Contributing also to the brilliant road control are specially developed 20” tyres to insure excellent performance, the tyres have a: 245/35 front-suspension and a rear-suspension of 285/35. Fitted on perforated rims in fluid moulded aluminium to ensure lightness and maximum brake ventilation efficiency. Lastly, the Alfa 8C Spider uses an evolved VDC Alfa Romeo traction and stability system, which ensures the driver feels at one with his car.

With its 23inch wheels-to-the corners, heroic proportions and muscular forms, the ZEO exhibits a new youthful breed of muscle-machine interface. This exciting vehicle makes its European debut at the 78th International Motor Show in Geneva. Dodge owners and those who will desire the ZEO concept are unquestionably driving enthusiasts. They are less family-oriented, with a desire for things that are high-tech, and place less emphasis on pure practicality. While they boast environmental and overall responsibility, they also exhibit a “need for speed.” “The Dodge ZEO concept is designed to break the paradigm of what an electric car should look like,” said Bill Zheng, Dodge ZEO concept principal exterior designer. “An electric car can be as expressive as any gasoline-powered vehicle. The Dodge ZEO concept proves that point – and then some.” To this end, the Dodge ZEO’s body has been given an active, three-dimensional form, with the fenders boldly offset to the body.

Concept Technology The advanced propulsion system powering the Dodge ZEO concept is electric-only with a 64 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of at least 400 kilometres. Resting in a rear-wheel-drive layout, Dodge ZEO’s 200-kilowatt (272 horsepower DIN) single-electric motor contributes to a 0-100 km/h time of less than six seconds – which rivals Chrysler’s famed HEMI® powerplant. Unlike other such vehicles, Dodge ZEO is a fourdoor, four-passenger vehicle that delivers function as well as environmental responsibility.

Nestled between the robust circular wheel arches, ZEO’s taut, elongated beltline ends with the signature Dodge kick-up at the rear, where the reverse-angle C-pillar is planted directly over the rear wheel arch.

Inspired by organic forms and wireless technology, Dodge ZEO’s interior is loaded with attitude and intelligence expected by youthful buyers.

Inspired in part by the architecture of a Möbius strip (a continuous surface with only one side), Dodge ZEO’s rakish A-pillars curve into extended roof rails that twist and converge as they race rearward. The windscreen glass continues in an unbroken, curving plane nearly to the rear of the car, giving both front and rear passengers an unimpeded, all-round view while showcasing ZEO’s inventive interior. Other expressive details include “scissor” doors, front and rear lamps treated as separate sculptural forms, and the “ZEO Orange” and dark silver exterior. “The lit crossbar grille,” says Zheng, “is designed to communicate the use of electricity as the ZEO’s power source.”

“The Dodge ZEO concept is an example of designing for people who are used to a dynamic lifestyle and who are surrounded with information and virtual friends at all times,” says Lou Gasevski, Dodge ZEO concept principal interior designer. The entire cabin is treated as if it were a single piece of sculpture. A broad sloping fabric-wrapped surface in front of the driver curves dramatically into the door and quarter panel. It then sweeps around the back panel to the opposite side quarter and door, ending in a sloping surface in front of the passenger. This design approach blends the usually separate-looking parts of the interior into a unified whole. A narrow strip of blue LED accent lighting on the doors and quarters lead to the back panel, adding to the sweeping effect.

A slim centre console slopes down from the windscreen of the Dodge ZEO, creating a dual-cockpit effect. It then levels off to divide the cabin by continuing clear to the back panel. To avoid visual clutter, customary controls and a viewing screen are set flush with the surface. Instead of a conventional instrument panel, the steering wheel, column and instruments are treated as a single freestanding design element. The Dodge ZEO concept’s steering wheel has two vertical spokes, set closely together, leaving 80 per cent of the rim “open” for maximum visibility. The laid-back centre hub, containing the driver air bag and auxiliary switches, is stationary, with the wheel rim revolving around it. Left and right horizontal paddle-levers just behind the wheel rim activate the remote radio functions. The sloping plane of the centre hub, which cantilevers forward above the steering column, houses the instruments, which are displayed on a thin blue acrylic viewing screen set directly in front of the driver. The entire elegant multi-piece ensemble adjusts with the wheel rim to the driver’s needs. Doors and quarters are bisected by a flaring, wide-to-narrow dark gray panel separating the upper and lower surfaces – with the lower portion of the door and quarter curving inboard to provide an armrest surface. Milled aluminium door pull handles, placed diagonally, act as accents. With its bold exterior and curving, sculptural interior, the ZEO concept appeals to Dodge brand customers who want value, expressive design and useful technology. n

A year after the unveiling of the GranTurismo, Maserati is back at the Geneva International Motorshow with yet anothe the ultimate expression of the Trident coupé’s sportiness. The new interpretation of the perfect balance between sportine performance and driving enjoyment.

O

n the exterior the Maserati GranTurismo S is characterised by a number of aesthetic modifications that, although discrete, are highly effective and make the car body appear sportier without abandoning the sleekness of the lines masterfully designed by Pininfarina. The integrated spoiler in the boot lid and the new-design side skirts help to improve the flows around the car. On top of that, the Maserati GranTurismo S boasts new specially designed 20” rims, which resemble the Trident, Maserati’s symbol. The sporty look is complemented by the generously proportioned oval-section exhaust tailpipes, the grille and black headlamp parabola; the

Trident on the grille and the Saetta logo on the “C” pillar are decorated with red prongs, following the tradition of the racing Maserati. The interior upholstered in Poltrona Frau leather and Alcantara (used for the steering wheel and centre of the seat with the option to extend to the whole of the headlining) reflects the sporty flair of the Maserati GranTurismo S; the figure-hugging front and rear seats are distinguished by their new dynamic design with horizontal piping on the seats and seatbacks. technique New V8 4.7 liter, 440 HP engine The main technical innovation on the Maserati GranTurismo S lives under the bonnet, where the latest version of the new family of wet-sump power units is fitted; the new and more powerful 4.7 liter V8 engine is capable of developing power output of 440 HP at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm. Recognizable on the outside by the red cylinder head covers, the new 4.7 engine was developed specifically to increase the car’s performance and provide the driver of the Maserati GranTurismo S with an even more exhilarating driving experience. The technical solutions adopted for this unit have served to emphasize the qualities of the most recent Maserati engines, namely the high specific power output and the ability to go up and down the revs quickly, typical of racing engines. The maximum speed of the 4.7 engine is 7,500 rpm, with the possibility of reaching 7,600 rpm in dynamic gear shift conditions at the limiter. The aim of the intensive development work of Maserati’s engineers was to ensure maximum fluidity of operation in everyday use and a definite sporty character as soon as the foot hits the throttle.

8 cylinders in 90 degree V, total displacement 4,691 cm3. Crankcase and cylinder heads in hardened and tempered aluminum alloy, crankshaft in hardened and tempered steel, balanced individually on 5 main bearings. The timing system features double chain-driven overhead camshaft per bank; four valves per cylinder driven by hydraulic cups. Increased-diameter Nikasil-coated thin steel cylinder liners. Wet sump lubrication, oil sump integral with crankcase, single oil bath pump. Bosch integrated ignition and injection systems and drive-by-wire accelerator.

The engine on the Maserati GranTurismo S is an eight-cylinder V with a 90° angle between the banks; the displacement is 4,691 cc. The timing has four chain-driven overhead camshafts (two per bank), with four valves per cylinder controlled by hydraulic tappets. The camshafts on the intake side are fitted with a low pressure continuous phase variator, with complete actuation times of less than 0.15 seconds. The increase in displacement from 4,244 cc to 4,691 cc has been obtained by increasing the bore and stroke values, paying particular attention to the longitudinal packaging of the engine, with a piston bore/cylinder centre distance ratio on a par with the best competition. The increased-diameter thin steel cylinder liners are coated with Nikasil. Against the increase in displacement, the steel cylinder liner solution helps to contain the weight and size of the engine, especially lengthwise. This is an ideal solution for a car with transaxle layout and with the engine fitted behind the front axle, since it allows the weights to be distributed ideally between the front and rear ends. The single-chain valve gear contributes to the improved longitudinal packaging. It also ensures exceptional engine reliability, the ultimate in silent operation, low friction to the benefit of consumption and the possibility of achieving precise timings that translate into optimized cylinder fill capacity and hence performance.


The 90° crankshaft, fully balanced with an appropriate selection of connecting rods and pistons, ensures that the engine operates with low vibrations and a characteristic and resonant sound, emphasized by a highly permeable intake system and exhaust system with controlled actuation to enhance the sound of the car in full compliance with type approval requirements and environmental aspects. The aluminum crankcase-engine block has 5 main bearings to ensure a highly rigid structure and low friction losses.

The arrangement of the upper part of the engine, namely the internal fluid-dynamics and cylinder head cooling system, is designed to make the intake manifolds highly permeable and provide effective cooling of the intake content and perfect intake and exhaust acoustic intonation. This translates into maximized volumetric efficiency and, eventually, into improved engine performance. The skilful harmonization of the intake and exhaust geometry combined with the use of continuous-actuation phase variators on the intake camshafts, optimized combustion chamber and engine calibration itself means that 82% of torque can be obtained from as little as 2500 rpm. This translates into exceptional pick-up capacity even

with long gears, allowing comfortable driving on motorway journeys and, in general, the engine’s full potential to be exploited over the entire operating range. The cylinder heads are also made of aluminum alloy and integrate the system carrying secondary air into the exhaust manifolds to obtain low emission levels. All the conduits (water, oil, secondary air) are made directly in the engine castings to create a highly rigid, space-saving system and provide a strong guarantee of quality during assembly and hence high reliability. Incorporating the ancillary systems (water pumps) with the engine’s main castings and the highly rigid design of all the wide-wall elements results

in low engine noise levels and high component reliability. In keeping with the philosophy of the most recent Maserati engines, the 4.7 liter power unit adopts a lubrication system with wet paper elements, first introduced with the launch of the Quattroporte Automatica, and also adopted on the GranTurismo with automatic transmission and now applied for the first time also on a model fitted with an electro-actuated gearbox. The lubrication system features a wet sump where the engine oil is collected in a sump integral with the crankcase and circulated by a single oil bath pump. Compared with the previous dry sump solution, the wet sump uses fewer pumps to recover the oil and reduces

operating noise considerably, to the benefit of driving comfort and improved balance between comfort and performance. The engine’s electronic management is carried out by the BOSCH Motronic ME7 system with dedicated sensors. These supply the control unit with constant input data for processing the fuel, advance and throttle valve angle parameters to control the power unit. The new engine is ready to comply with future Euro-V regulations for Europe and LEV2 regulations for USA thanks to the adoptions of an innovative metallic matrix catalyzer with perforated sheets which combines permeability with reliability.

The sporty exhaust — The V8 makes itself heard The Maserati GranTurismo S gives a voice to its 440 HP with a special sporty exhaust system, designed to emphasize the deep throaty growl of the new V8 engine, but also provide the level of on-board comfort expected from a granturismo. The steel exhaust system consists of two exhaust

lines, one for each bank of cylinders, compensated with a central silencer. Two pneumatic valves, controlled electronically by the engine control unit and operated by the driver through the “Sport” button on the centre dashboard, are fitted close to the two rear silencers. In normal conditions the valves are closed forcing the exhaust gases along a long and tortuous route so that they lose their energy and are emitted outwards with very little noise. This all changes when the “Sport” button is pressed: the valves which were initially closed, open up through a pneumatic control and the flow of exhaust gases is channeled down a route that leads directly to the outside. This provides enthusiasts with a distinctive resonance. In aesthetic terms, the modified design of the two exhausts with dual oval chrome tailpipes make the new system instantly recognizable. As on all Maserati models, the Maserati GranTurismo S adopts an exhaust system with metallic rather than ceramic catalyzers. This solution reduces the density of the cells inside the catalyzers and as a result lessens the section resistant to exhaust gas flow.

Transaxle layout and electro-actuated transmission — The Trident’s technological DNA The power unit on the Maserati GranTurismo S features the Transaxle layout, an architecture that belongs to Maserati’s engineering tradition and, not by coincidence, is typical of high-performance sports cars. The Transaxle system further improves the Granturismo’s already excellent weight distribution due to the gearbox being moved back en bloc with the differential: the engine located in the mid-front position is rigidly connected to the electro-actuated gearbox, mounted to the rear, through a rigid tubular element containing the driveshaft. These design solutions mean that the Maserati GranTurismo S boasts a weight distribution between front and rear axle, of 47-53% respectively, which is unique in its respective segment. From the customer’s perspective the Transaxle layout maximizes traction and breakaway capacity when accelerating, the car body is more stable


and balanced and behaves more neutrally. This results in higher lateral acceleration on bends and a more intuitive feel when going into a bend, and also assists with more efficient braking due to the reduced weight on the front. The clutch-type limited-slip differential features special locking settings for traction (25%) and release (45%) conditions, in order to achieve maximum equilibrium between traction and stability in all conditions. The adoption of the transaxle layout is instrumental in enhancing the performance of the Maserati GranTurismo S, and contributes to the car’s excellent dynamic performance. As a result the car is more compact and balanced and really conveys to the driver the sensation of a true sports car.

The electro-actuated transmission An electro-actuated transmission, representing the state of the art in the respective segment, is fitted to the Maserati Gran Turismo S in order to harness the greater power output of the new V8 4.7 and provide a heightened driving experience. In technical terms, the electro-actuated gearbox fitted to the Maserati GranTurismo S, incorporates a dry twin-plate clutch and 6 ratios (plus reverse), with triple-cone synchronizers on 1st and 2nd, and dual cone on the other gears. The dual-plate clutch is a solution derived from the world of racing and is particularly recommended for the most sporty cars:

Rear Isofix attachments for a child seat. the reduced dimensions of the clutch unit (Ø 215 mm), and the small-diameter flywheel (Ø 240 mm), keep the weight of the unit down significantly, and clearly reduces the power unit’s total inertia compared to a single-plate system. This type of arrangement allows the top engine speed to be reached more easily, and results in a more immediate gearbox response, quicker gear

changes and, finally, improved driving dynamics. The hydraulic control is managed by the control unit through the paddles integral with the steering column, the layout of which is highly ergonomic and effective in extreme driving conditions, as amply demonstrated. The paddles on the steering wheel of the GranTurismo S, just like those on all the other Maserati models, differ from the systems used by other manufacturers in that they are integral with the steering wheel column. This solution means that the driver never has to take his hands off the wheel, and so has better control of the vehicle. Thanks to the excellent ergonomic layout of the paddles it is possible to change gear with a simple flick of the fingers. This improves safety, particularly on winding routes, and gives a more enjoyable driving experience. Due to their special elongated design, the paddles on the Maserati Gran Turismo S are always within easy reach of the driver even when steering sharply, compared to those on the automatic transmission model. The Granturismo’s automatic gearbox control lever on the centre tunnel has been replaced with a panel that accommodates two buttons, one for engaging reverse and one for first gear: it is particularly useful during parking maneuvers to be able to engage first gear without having to use the steering wheel paddle. basic operating modes, manual and automatic. Manual mode ensures maximum driving involvement and shifts take place only if requested by the driver and when the car’s top performance is required; automatic mode, by contrast, is intended for those driving conditions in which the driver wishes to have less involvement: the system also decides on gear change speed as well as carrying out the shift and take-off operation. The functionalities linked to the “Sport” button, which affects available power output, shift speed and damper setting when Skyhook suspensions are fitted (optional), can be overlapped in both modes. The Maserati GranTurismo S can be driven selecting from a total of six operating modes: n Manual Normal n Manual Sport n Manual Sport in MC-Shift n Auto Normal n Auto Sport n Ice Manual Normal Mode In Manual Normal mode the valves are closed and the choice of gear lies solely with the driver. To ensure greater driving enjoyment the system holds the gear when the limiter is reached; the control unit merely checks that the gear requested matches engine speed, so as to avoid taking it beyond the limiter when shifting up or below the minimum speed when shifting down. Manual Sport Mode In manual mode, pressing the “Sport” button causes the transmission control system to adopt a more performance-oriented gearshift strategy, with much shorter times to change between one ratio and another. In Manual Sport mode the pneumatic exhaust valves open: the reduced backpressure generated allows the engine speed to increase more quickly. Manual Sport in MC-Shift The gearshift solution known as MC-Shift is the most important innovation of the electro-actuated system on the Maserati GranTurismo S: this includes management software and special hardware components which give top performance in terms of gearshift times. In conventional electro-actuated systems the three shift phases (cut in torque and opening of clutch; gear disengagement, selection and engagement; closing of clutch and restoration of torque) are carried out sequentially. On the Maserati GranTurismo S the shift phases are partially overlapped: gear disengagement and engagement take place in advance of clutch opening and closing; this means that the shift time, interpreted and calculated as the break in

acceleration, drops to 100 ms, whilst the single gear engagement phase reduces to 40 ms. The fast MC-Shift is available only when shifting up and in Manual Sport mode, provided that the transmission control unit recognizes when given parameters relating to engine and transmission temperature are achieved: the quick shift is possible above 5500 rpm and with the throttle at 80%. Once these parameters have been achieved, the system enables fast shift, and warns the driver through the MC-S indicator on the dashboard display, which lights up and stays on. Auto Normal Mode In Auto mode the gear change is managed completely automatically by the transmission electronic control system. The control unit determines engine speed and moment of the shift as well as its speed, based on parameters such as vehicle speed, engine speed and the driver’s request for torque and power. In automatic mode a gear can be requested manually through the paddles behind the steering wheel (gear suggestion). The system recognizes the type of driver by means of functions that assess the driver’s style of driving through lateral and longitudinal acceleration and throttle movement. If a sportier driving style is recognized, the “UP” shifts are moved to a higher number of engine revs. The control system also recognizes the type of road, adapting gear changes when the road climbs or falls, on a bend, in town and on motorways. Auto Normal mode is the mode most designed for comfort: Changing to a higher gear is required as soon as possible in order to obtain the lowest level of vibrations and acoustic return from the engine. Shifting is managed in such a way as to ensure that gear changes are ultra-smooth. This mode also ensures lower fuel consumption when combined with a normal and non-aggressive driving style. In Auto Normal mode the sporty exhaust by-pass valves stay closed, which results in greater acoustic comfort whilst driving. This does not mean, however, having to give up on the car’s sporty nature: when driving in sport mode, with frequent opening of the throttle, gearshift speeds approach those of the Auto Sport mode. Auto Sport Mode Auto Sport mode is activated with the transmission in auto mode and by pressing the “Sport” button located on the centre dashboard: changing gear is still managed automatically by the transmission control unit, but by varying the speed of the operations to open up and reduce torque, disengage, select and engage gear, close the clutch and restore engine torque. The result is a faster gear change and a more sporty driving feel. Compared to Auto Normal mode, shifting up takes place at higher engine speeds, whereas moving down a gear down is accompanied by a

more pronounced heel and toe effect. In Auto mode as well, with the “Sport” button on, the pneumatic exhaust valves open so that the engine can achieve top performance. ICE Mode This mode can be used on low-grip road surfaces and is activated through the ICE button located on the centre tunnel alongside the electric park brake. When switched on, it limits the torque transmitted to the wheels and so loss of grip, avoiding having to run the engine at more than 3,000 rpm. ICE mode takes priority over the Sport modes and does not allow the stability control to be switched off (MSP OFF): When the driver requests the ICE mode, Sport mode is deactivated automatically (if it was on) and the stability control (MSP) restored (if previously deactivated). When the car is started, the Cambiocorsa configuration is the same as when the engine was switched off. Only if the engine was switched off in MANUAL mode does the transmission present itself in easy-exit AUTO mode. In this configuration the gear change logic is automatic, but when a gear is requested with the car moving (gear suggestion) the system changes to MANUAL mode. The car presents the same configuration as when it was switched off previously in NORMAL/SPORT modes as well. Braking system — Dual-cast technology The Maserati GranTurismo S is fitted with a highperformance brake system, which uses dual-cast technology for the front brake discs, developed in collaboration with Brembo and used for the first time in the automotive field on the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S. Differently from traditional cast iron discs, the dual-cast disc consists of a cast iron braking ring and an aluminum hub, making it possible to combine the advantages offered by cast iron’s performance at temperature with the aluminum’s light weight. At the front the Dual-cast discs are combined with the six-piston mono-bloc brake calipers with differentiated diameter (30/34/36 mm), with Ferodo HP1000 pads. The mono-bloc calipers are more resistant to deformation than calipers made of two parts; this means that lighter materials, in this case aluminum, can be used and component weight minimized even further. The caliper is also more efficient at any operating pressure and this translates into lighter use of the pedal use when braking. A the rear 330 x 28 mm discs are fitted with 4-piston calipers having differentiated diameter (32/36 mm), and Jurid 673 GG pads. The brake calipers fitted as standard on the Maserati GranTurismo S are red. The customer may personalize the color of the calipers selecting from one of a further 5 alternative shades: Titanio


e Giallo for a more sporty look, Argento and Blu for a more elegant configuration and the classic Nero. The braking system in the Maserati GranTurismo S also features ABS, which prevents the wheels from locking up when braking, and EBD for better distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels, both integrated with MSP Bosch version 8.0.

“Hill Holder” device and Electric Parking Brake (EPB) The Maserati GranTurismo S is equipped with the “Hill Holder” function, which aids the driver during hill starting. The device holds the car braked for a few seconds (the time varies depending on road incline), so that the driver has time to move his foot from the brake pedal to the throttle without the car moving.

Interior Without a doubt, the most distinctive features of the interior of the Maserati GranTurismo S are the seats, with the contrasting central section characterized by piping running horizontally. The interiors are upholstered in Frau Leather and Alcantara: In the standard configuration the Alcantara is used for the central section of the seats and for the steering wheel’s rim, and can be extended on request right up to the headlining. Frau Leather and Alcantara is not the only combination of materials available for the interior; the customer can select a more classic interior trimmed entirely in Frau leather, or substitute the Alcantara lining the seats with Peccary leather for a more sporty and sophisticated option.

The Peccary leather is available in three colors (the elegant Cuoio and Grigio Vanadio and the extremely sporty Nero Asphalt). It is a full-grain leather with the characteristic embossing that sets it apart from ordinary leathers normally used in the car industry due to the lack of coatings or films. The leather is not chemically treated to preserve its natural look and distinctive velvety feel. The leather is treated so that it is both oil- and waterproof, and meets all the quality standards required for use in the automotive industry. n

Athletic look for the new Maserati GranTurismo S The Maserati GranTurismo S is recognizable on the outside due to a number of aesthetic details that really bring to the fore this model’s sporty credentials, but without detracting from the elegance of the lines expertly designed by Pininfarina. The Maserati GranTurismo S is distinguished by the new-design side skirts, the rear spoiler integrated in the boot and the specially designed seven-spoke 20” rims. he first all-new Lotus since the iconic Elise made its debut in 1995, The Evora enters the sports car market as currently the world’s only mid-engined 2+2. Powered by a Lotus-tuned 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 280 PS, and weighing just 1350 kg (prototype specification), the Evora promises breathtaking performance. During preliminary testing around the famous Nürburgring, the Lotus chassis engineers report that it is extremely agile and great fun to drive - even when clad with the full development disguise that hid the beautiful lines from the prying motor-industry paparazzi.

In addition to its excellent performance and exemplary handling, the Evora offers a more refined ownership experience than Lotus’s existing smaller four-cylinder models. Its elegantly styled cabin is elegantly trimmed and its equipment list includes contemporary features such as an advanced touch-screen multi-media system and electric power-fold door mirrors. Because one of the roles of the Evora is to attract new customers to the Lotus brand, much attention has been paid to its ease of use. Wider, taller door apertures and narrower sills make getting in and out of the cabin a less athletic undertaking than it is in Lotus’s smaller sports cars (the Elise, Exige, Europa and 2-Eleven), while the design of the cabin itself will accommodate two 99th percentile (6ft 5in tall) American

males in the front seats. The ‘convenience factor’ of the Evora extends to less obvious areas of the car. For instance, beneath the skin the entire front-end structure is a high tech aluminium sacrificial modular unit, attached to the main extruded aluminium tub. This modular unit is designed to deform for maximum safety, and to reduce repair costs in the event of a frontal impact. The Evora has been designed with global automotive regulations in mind, and future derivatives are planed, these including amongst others, a convertible. The Evora will be hand crafted and built on a dedicated new assembly line within Lotus’s advanced manufacturing facility at Hethel in the east of England; capacity limitations will restrict production to approximately 2000 cars a year, ensuring the dynamic new sports car’s rarity and exclusivity. Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, has this to say about the exciting new model: “The Evora is the biggest milestone Lotus has achieved since the Elise was born 13 years ago and is part of our bold five year strategic plan, which includes the introduction of new cars and technologies to many more markets around the world. The Evora also represents Lotus core values of performance through light weight and efficiency and proves that you can have phenomenal performance, fuel efficiency elegant design and practicality all in a class leading mid-engine 2+2 sportscar, which will meet


global safety and homologation standards” Mike Kimberley continues, “Looking to the future, we will continue to research, develop and produce lighter, more efficient vehicles which are linked to our extensive and well-regarded work on all aspects of future fuels, alternative engines and electric and hybrid vehicle solutions for the future. We all have an environmental responsibility to future generations and the Evora is another example where Lotus is seen to make significant steps towards improving the efficiency and sustainability of the motorcar keeping Britain at the forefront of the high technology motor industry.”

THE EVORA IN DETAIL Style or function? Have both…

Designed ‘in-house’ by Lotus Design, the sleek and athletic form uses fluid forms and crisp surfaces to communicate velocity, agility and sophistication. Low and wide with modern cab forward proportions, muscular rear haunches and function optimised hip air intakes this is clearly a serious mid engined sportscar that skilfully hides the practicality of its two plus two capability. Russell Carr, Head of Lotus Design, led the Evora’s design team with Steven Crijns, Design Manager responsible for the exterior and Anthony Bushell, Senior Designer, responsible

for the interior. “A cornerstone of the design’s success was working closely with the technical team to develop a package that allowed us to get the proportions correct,” says Head of Design Russell Carr, “The asymmetric wheel sizes, the short rear overhang, long front overhang and cab forward visor screen all contribute to giving the car visual movement and an agile stance. This is incredibly important to us because we want the car’s aesthetics to communicate its driving characteristics”. Lotus products have always embodied a perfect balance between form and function and the Evora successfully continues this heritage. “We never lost sight of the fact that, although this car must provide real world useability, sportscars are emotional purchases and that you have to seduce the customer through beguiling looks and exotic persona. We are, therefore, very proud that we have been able to use technical and user functionality to positively drive the design in key areas and create some of the car’s most distinctive features”. says Carr. Ingress and egress, for example, dictated a minimal “stepover” to get into the Evora. We simply cut away the surface under the door and created a unique and dramatic piece of sculpture that enhances the stance of the car as well as its useability. Elsewhere, aerodynamic considerations for drag, down force and cooling had significant but positive influence

This is unmistakeably mid engined language and the Evora is unmistakeably a Lotus

on the overall form and details such as air intakes. A desire to create balanced down force, that increases cornering performance, led to the adoption of, the now, “signature” top exit radiator vent, race car inspired diffuser and “floating rear wing”. Drag limitation, drove the dramatic tear-dropped cabin layout and the curvaceous plan view has given the car a more muscular rear shoulder and conveys a level of sophistication appropriate to this market segment. “We believe that our designs should be honest as well as dramatic and so we are really pleased with the fact that these iconic features all do a real job” says Steven Crijns, Design Manager. This inherent understanding of the relationship between the technical and the aesthetic paid dividends the first time a fullscale model of the Evora was wind-tunnel tested – only minimal adjustments were required to the car’s aerodynamic package to meet the targets for downforce and stability. Steve Crijns continued, “Overall the design language shows a clear DNA link with its Lotus siblings, whilst establishing its own distinctive and contemporary theme. The undulating shoulder

line is brilliantly mirrored in the lower part of the bodyside by the cut -away sill that creates a torseau-like muscularity.” “The front three-quarter view is really powerful” Russell Carr continues, “Your eye is drawn effortlessly, from our signature mouth, rearward by fluid surfaces and fast lines that create a sense of speed even when the car is stationary. From this angle you can also see how dramatically the visor screen sweeps around the teardrop form of the cabin and the gently waisted plan shape perfectly accentuates the muscularity of the rear fender. This is unmistakeably mid engined language and the Evora is unmistakeably a Lotus.” The view from the rear three-quarters is just as striking and the one that many will become familiar with as the car passes them on the road. The tapered cabin, diffuser, floating wing, centrally mounted twin tailpipes and distinctive engine bay vents all combine to create a completely unique look. The design language of the interior reflects that of the exterior – simple, fluid surfaces, soft forms and crisp feature lines wrap around the cabin cosseting the occupants.


Moving right inside…

Unlike recent Lotus products that use a race car inspired, technical minimalism, the Evora employs a softer approach that utilises premium quality materials and finishes to create a contemporary but luxurious ambience that is unique to Lotus products.

Anthony Bushell Senior Designer explained about the choice of materials in the Evora’s interior, “Tactile quality is incredibly important within this segment and so we wanted the interior to use honest premium materials. Much of the switchgear is bespoke, and every metallic component is actually metal.”

It is, according to Head of Lotus Design Russell Carr, “A huge departure from what people might expect based on Lotus’s recent past. We wanted the Evora’s cabin to feel special and to be surprising as well as sporty. Precision engineered metal inserts and quality edge-lit switches are brilliantly juxtaposed against soft hand-stitched leather surfaces to give a modern interior with a classic twist.”

Focused courtesy lighting is used throughout the interior, giving a spectacular illuminated feel to the sculpture design feature of the cabin. The extensive use of handcrafted, premium leather differentiates The Evora from other Lotus products and such is its importance to the character of the car that an entire new trim shop has been built at the Lotus Headquarters in the UK, dedicated to its production.

High-tech treats

Contemporary technology also features in the Evora’s cabin. A newly developed Alpine multimedia system with a 7 inch touch-screen provides advanced audio, satellite navigation, video, Bluetooth® hands-free telephone and iPod® connectivity functions; the screen also serves as a monitor for The Evora’s optional reversing camera. The satellite navigation element of the system is removable, allowing you to programme it from the comfort of your home, or take it with you to continue your journey in an unfamiliar pedestrian location. The Alpine audio set-up is one of the most sophisticated automotive systems in the world. Called IMPRINT and using MultEQ sound enhancement technology, it is able to cancel out sound imbalances, caused by the cabin window glass, for instance, creating echoes, while carpets suppress mid-range frequencies – resulting in amazingly crisp, clear, undistorted sound reproduction wherever you are seated in the car. A bespoke air-conditioning system developed by Bergstrom is standard on all models, and has been designed for the hottest climate or the closest humidity to help provide maximum occupant comfort. Lotus traction control and on-board tyre pressure monitoring will also be available.

One size fits all

The front seats themselves are very supportive and leather clad with a lightweight manual adjustment mechanism for fore and aft, rake and lumbar, designed to give a supported driving position. The rear seats of 2+2 versions of the Evora –are intended for children and smaller adults. There will also be a two-seater derivative with a luggage shelf in the back. To maximise comfort in the rear, there’s a decent amount of foot-room under the seats in front, while both back seats feature ISOFIX mountings for secure child seat fitment. When unoccupied, the rear seats provide a convenient stowage area, adding to the Evora’s appeal as an everyday car. The 160 litre boot, which ingeniously features a fresh air cooling system to reduce the effect of any heat ingress from the engine bay, will also accommodate a full set of golf clubs.

Easy in, easy out

With the Elise and its derivatives, the no-compromise character of the car makes getting in and out across a wide sill and through a comparatively narrow door/window aperture part of the charm of ownership. For the Evora and its remit for the serious daily driver, and to attract new-

comers to the Lotus brand, greater convenience and practicality is provided. As a consequence the sill is now lower and slimmer (80mm wide compared with 100mm in the Elise), and the whole door aperture taller. The doors open wider than on the Elise and its siblings, while the height of the front seat is raised by 65mm. But while The Evora is undeniably more ‘lifestyle’ in respect of its everyday practicality, once you’re seated behind its flat-bottomed steering wheel, it feels every bit as exotic and sporting as you would expect a Lotus to be.

Safely does it

In common with the Elise and its derivatives, The Evora’s bonded extruded aluminium chassis tub has incredible inherent strength, particularly in regard to side impacts. Additional torsional strength is given to the whole structure by the tubular steel seatbelt anchorage frame that also acts as a rollover structure. Deformable sacrificial aluminium front and steel rear subframe modules are attached to the tub using joints which are designed to minimise damage to the tub, protecting the main passenger cell in the event of an accident. Driver and passenger airbags are standard. The airbag on the passenger side is cleverly engineered to


deploy vertically and then be deflected rearwards by the windscreen, to provide protection for children as well as adults. Anti-lock brakes are standard on all models, as is Lotus Traction Control (LTC); these systems have been specially developed in co-operation with Bosch and enable up and coming drivers to consistently exploit the braking and acceleration capabilities of the Evora, whilst allowing skilled enthusiasts the freedom to enjoy the full Lotus driving experience.

The Low Volume

The Low Volume VVA architecture has been designed so that it can be extended in width, length and height. The strength and stiffness of the low volume VVA chassis can be modified cost effectively by varying the wall thickness of the extrusions, without altering the exterior dimensions. The ability to lengthen or shorten extrusions with the option to tailor the chassis stiffness, vastly increases the number of vehicles that can be developed from this vehicle architecture. Front and mid engine installations have been considered, as well as hybrid and Electric Vehicle (EV)

applications. The Lotus Evora employs a composite roof as a stressed structural member to give an exceptional vehicle stiffness of 26,000 Nm per degree, thanks in part to the seatbelt anchorage frame’s secondary function as a roll over structure, and partly because the high-tech composite body panels are stressed items. However, despite this high stiffness, the complete chassis and modules weight just 200 kg (prototype weight), helping to keep the weight of the whole car to just 1350 kg (prototype weight). To deliver this high performance structure, bonded and riveted high grade aluminium extrusions and simple and elegant folded sheet elements are used in the lower

structure, building upon award winning research projects in this field. Lotus pioneered the technology of bonded aluminium extrusions for use in road vehicles and has successfully developed high performance cars for other car companies around the world. The central tub is attached to an extruded aluminium subframe at the front and a lightweight welded steel subframe at the rear. These subframe modules also offer advantages in terms of convenience and low cost of repair, and during manufacturing can be brought to the production line fully assembled, ready to be attached. The high technology Lotus Evora chassis will be manufactured at the new Lotus Lightweight Structures facility in Worcester, UK. LLS employs 120 skilled engineers, technicians and sales staff and will manufacture all the Lotus aluminium structures, including those for the Elise, Exige, 2–Eleven and Europa and aluminium and composite structures and components for Lotus’s extensive global client base.

The chassis: Production Low Volume Versatile Vehicle Architecture

The Evora’s chassis is an evolution of the Versatile Vehicle Architecture (VVA) from the Lotus APX concept vehicle previously showcased at the Geneva Motorshow, and allows for the development of a range of vehicles up to a gross vehicle weight of 1,900 kg. This architecture has been designed to be more applicable to mid-volume applications by utilising our low capital investment manufacturing processes. The Evora structure progresses the Lotus ‘bonded and riveted’ technology used in the Elise family of vehicles with unique extrusions and folded panels, whilst providing contemporary ease of ingress/egress, build modularity and improved, lower cost repairs.

The Evora suspension wishbones are forged from aluminium to reduce the unsprung mass. These are similar in weight, and stiffer than the steel items found on the much smaller Elise, Exige and Europa vehicles, and have a far higher vehicle weight capacity. They are attached to the front and rear modules via bespoke bushes. The Evora will use Bilstein high performance dampers and Eibach springs with unique dual path top mounts for optimised vehicle refinement. Hydraulically assisted power steering is provided by a Lotus tuned TRW steering rack. All in all, the Evora delivers. It has incredible Lotus handling and provides unsurpassable driving

driver without taking over. The Lotus LTC is active above 5 mph (8 km/h) and operates much more quickly than many brake based systems. The system can be deactivated completely, giving no traction control intervention.

Keeping a grip

18 inch at the front, 19 inch at the rear. Tyre choice is a vital component in the handling performance of every Lotus and for the Evora, Yokohama was chosen as development partner. Lotus’s long-term relationship with Yokohama was swiftly rewarded during development when initially the front tyre size did not generate the Lotus required lateral grip, the Japanese grip gurus went away and developed bespoke tyres especially for the Evora – a 225/40 ZR18 at the front and larger diameter; 255/35 ZR19 at the rear. Both have carcass construction and a rubber compound unique to Lotus and are identified by the letters ‘LTS’ on the sidewalls.

The V6 Engine pleasure. In fact, word from the ride and handling team is that the new car is likely to become a class standard-setter for speed and agility.

Stop right now…

Vented and cross-drilled brake discs – massive 350mm items on the front and 332mm at the rear – and high performance bespoke Lotus AP Racing 4 pot callipers ensure impressive stopping power. Everyone connected with the brake testing programme, conducted on the punishing corners, climbs and descents of the Nürburgring, has described the brakes as ‘phenomenal’ with excellent thermal performance and outstanding feel even after extended sessions of extreme use. Part of that testing programme was to finalise settings for the ABS system being developed in conjunction with Bosch. The system is set to very high thresholds and operates so progressively that drivers are often unaware that they have actually triggered the ABS.

Safe. Fun. Lotus Traction Control

The Switchable Lotus Traction Control (LTC) system has been developed simultaneously with the ABS and works through the engine management system to reduce power when required to maintain traction. Unlike many traction control systems, LTC has been tuned to complement the skills of the

Dual VVT-i (‘intelligent’ variable valve timing) The exceptional working relationship that Lotus has enjoyed with Toyota over several decades, combined with the overwhelmingly enthusiastic reception for the company’s four-cylinder power units in the Elise and Exige, guaranteed the Japanese giant’s inclusion on the shortlist for the Evora engine supplier. The final choice was Toyota’s all-alloy 2GR-FE 3.5-litre V6 DOHC, with dual VVT-i (‘intelligent’ variable valve timing). Lotus has painstakingly developed its own T6e engine management software for this engine to optimise its compatibility with the unique requirements of the Evora to give a peak power output to 280 PS at 6400 rpm, while boosting its maximum torque to 342 Nm at 4700 rpm (prototype figures). Changes to the engine management and exhaust systems also allow the V6 to rev more freely and provide rapid throttle response; feedback from the development team suggests that the strength of the engine’s mid-range torque means that gutsy performance will be easily accessible without having to thunder through to the redline. This makes the Lotus Evora a thoroughly satisfying car for everyday road use and a rewarding one when you just want to drive. The 2GR-FE V6 engine is mated to a manual six-speed gearbox, again Toyota-sourced. A close-ratio version of this gearbox is also currently under development for the even more sport-focussed driver. Many Lotus owners enjoy the blend of unique performance

and efficiency that the brand’s cars offer. True to the Lotus value of “performance through light weight” CO2 emissions are expected to be a class leading sub-225 g/km (prototype figures) while testers report fuel consumption in the region of 30+ mpg (pending formal homologation testing).

What’ll she do?

At the time of its unveiling, full performance figures have yet to be compiled on a production specification Lotus Evora, Lotus has another 6 months development to conduct. While for Lotus top speed is of less importance than stability at speed, early indications suggest a maximum speed of 160 mph; the 0-60 mph sprint from standstill is estimated at sub 5 seconds (prototype figures).

Test. Test. Then test some more It’s a global car, so the Evora has been tested around the world. From the icy wastes of the arctic to the heat of the desert, the high altitude of the Alps as well as the country roads around the Hethel factory. It has spent hours howling around the Nürburgring and endlessly lapped Lotus’s test track at Hethel. By the time the Evora enters production, prototypes will have travelled for hundreds of thousands of miles along some of the worst public roads in the world and been tortured for as many miles on some of the toughest proving grounds the motor industry

n 1952 they pretty much amazed more or less everybody with a prototype for the spider Arnolt Bristol (the car went into production in 1954) and with the Abarth 1500. Aerodynamics and sinuous lines were the striking features of both cars. During the same year they designed the Giulietta Spring 1300. The car was launched at the Turin Auto Show in 1954 and was a great success from the start.

based on the Abarth 1500, where research into more performance-oriented aerodynamics resulted in Scaglione’s unparalleled original and challenging design achievements. Indeed, B.A.T. stands for Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica, which has nothing to do with the English translation “bat” that fascinates the Anglo-Saxons on account of the vehicle’s rear curved fins, which evoke a flying object rather than a car.

This long-lasting success almost “stole the scene” from an elegant family of prototype cars that were built upon the Alfa Romeo 1900 Sprint chassis: the B.A.T. 5 (1953), the B.A.T. 7 (1954) and the B.A.T. 9 (1955). The state-of-the-art, futuristic design of all three sports cars was clearly

Let us take a step back in time. 50 years ago Nuccio Bertone and designer Franco Scaglione produced a number of precious car designs, joining creativity, innovation, good taste and a touch of eccentricity.

THE B.A.T. TRIO IS REUNITED

All three prototypes aroused much interest worldwide ,and withseveral collectors, and later went down in history as part of Bertone style, giving way to new amazing, exciting and fabulous car designs.

Later, in the early Nineties, Gary’s wife had to undergo expensive medical treatment, forcing Gary to sell his car, which was purchased by a collector from Las Vegas who also owned the other two versions: hence the “family” was reunited and is now among some of the most sought-after, top rated collections in the world.

And while, in Turin Bertone, was looking to the future, in America, young medical student and big car fan Gary Kaberly had come across a strange red car sitting on the lot of a car dealers. The car had a streamlined design and resembled a space object. He asked his mother for a loan and bought the car without even actually knowing what it was. He found out a few years later, when a friend of his showed him a supplement of “Road & Truck”, a specialized magazine featuring the B.A.T. 9 on the magazine cover in its original, silver-coated design. The article featured inside described the car as a veritable masterful creation developed by Italian car designer Nuccio Bertone.

The treatment extended Gary’s wife’s life a couple of years. Following her death, he resumed contact with Bertone, asking him this time to add a sequel to the B.A.T. trilogy, and offering to take part in this new adventure. The first step forward has been taken: it is called B.A.T. 11

Gary decided to restore the B.A.T. 9 in great detail and started exchanging numerous letters with Nuccio Bertone, who gave him all the necessary information. After completing the job, Gary, who in the meantime had become a well-established dentist, decided to exhibit the car at car exhibitions and auto show contests, often accompanied by his wife Debra.

STILE BERTONE UNVEILS THE B.A.T. 11 The B.A.T.11 designed by Stile Bertone brings back memories of an episode that marked the car sector in the Fifties and that has evolved up to the present day, indulging a passion for the car mixed with vicissitudes of personal fortune. This project is the logical outcome of the evolution of the B.A.T. 5, B.A.T. 7 and B.A.T. 9, developed by Nuccio Bertone together with Alfa Romeo between 1953 and 1955. The aim at that time was to build aerodynamic cars: BAT stands for Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica (Aerodynamic Technical Coupe). These three models, designed by Franco Scaglione, had very advanced features for their time. They represent three important moments in automobile history and after many trials and tribulations found themselves the property of an avid collector in Las Vegas. They are now considered one of the most valuable collections in the world. This new prototype has been designed with the Maserati GT chassis in mind, to avoid being a mere emotional copy of the past. It strives to be the BAT of the 3rd millennium, an authentic sports car, in keeping with the history of the Bertone name. For example, its design was the most avantgarde among the various proposals, in line with the designer’s penchant for strong messages. At the same time, creativity was combined with reality: the prototype scale model was fine tuned based on aerodynamic tests carried out at the Department Aeronautics and Space Engineering at the Polytechnic Institute of Torino. 4,9 meters long, 1,9 meters wide, and 1,2 meters high, the design brings to the forefront some of the distinguishing elements of the BAT concept, such as the tapered fins and the faired wheels, all in a context where soft proportions are combined with strict and rough lines: a successful meeting of the typical Bertone themes that have inspired so many. The fins seem to have been designed as a shawl that wraps around the car beginning at the front fender. At the rear there is a suspended spoiler running lengthwise, which uses a specific anchoring system. There is, therefore, a continuous flow of surfaces, volumes and open spaces that are uncovered piece by piece depending on the view angle. Even the 21” faired wheels with Pirelli tires contribute to defining the model’s character: they are inspired by the spoked wheels of before and are fixed to the hub; they are made of alloy rims and carbon fiber segmented helical spokes that let one catch a glimpse of the Brembo brake calipers. It should also be noted that the body features that streamline the front wheels are mobile and provide for an electronic opening and closing system linked to the steering wheel to guarantee easy steering when parking. Seen from the front, the model clearly recalls Alfa Romeo: a long hood, very sleek in the upper part, which descends towards a sharp receding front bringing to mind the model designed by Bertone for the Alfa Montreal. At the center is the typical triangular shield with the circular brand logo on the top of the hood from which extend 3 horizontal lines that represent the Alfa Romeo “whiskers”: the central ones cut through the inlet which holds the LED lighting system supplied by OSRAM.

T

he side of the car is very simple, almost basic, and brings to the forefront two particularities that highlight the sporty nature of the car: the low windows combined with the high waistline and the cooling foils (which are also on the rear bumpers) optimize brake cooling. The doors were designed to open towards the front and slightly upwards, allowing access to a two seat cockpit designed to be simply and elegantly furnished, in line with the BAT concept. The dashboard is designed in wood and curved along the lower part on the driver’s side. Finally, the grey-green color, linked to the Alfa Romeo brand and dear to Nuccio Bertone, is yet another element that contributes to maintaining this particular style, created by a master, towards the future. n

De concept car is niet alleen aantrekkelijk om te zien, ook zijn rijprestaties zijn indrukwekkend. De auto beschikt over Snow Motion antislipregeling van de laatste generatie, dat vrijwel niet onderdoet voor vierwielaandrijving, en het UrbanHybrid-systeem waardoor het brandstofverbruik en de uitstoot van CO2 sterk beperkt worden.

Dynamiek en raffinement De C5 Airscape heeft elegante vormen met een geraffineerd silhouet. De krachtige carrosserie wordt nog verder benadrukt door de diepgrijze kleur. voorste gedeelte van het dak van glas lijkt. Hierdoor baadt het interieur in het licht. Het volledig van carbon vervaardigde dak laat zich heel eenvoudig in- en uitvouwen zonder het esthetische aspect van de auto uit het oog te verliezen. Het invouwen gaat automatisch en vereist geen bijzondere handelingen; ook hoeft het bergvak bij de bagageruimte niet apart te worden geopend. De C5 Airscape mag zich tot de klassiekers rekenen in auto-ontwerp dankzij het metalen dak met stoffen bekleding. Het oogt als het canvas dak van weleer en staat daarmee symbool voor een cabriolet van topklasse.

Gedistingeerde vrijheid Het volledig in donkerbruin leer uitgevoerde interieur van de C5 Airscape met de bijzonder fraai uitgevoerde stoelen roepen een gevoel van ongekende luxe op. Het middengedeelte van de stoelen doet denken aan de schakels van een horlogeband terwijl de randen van de stoelen zijn afgewerkt met stiksels die het geheel een strak en krachtig uiterlijk geven. De pookknop is bekleed met leer en chroom, geheel in lijn met de chromen omlijsting van de bediening van de airco en de middenconsole. De bestuurder beschikt over een stuurwiel met vaste kern. Dit bevat direct binnen handbereik de belangrijkste bedieningsknoppen voor comfort en hulp bij het rijden (navigatie, radio, cruise control met snelheidsbegrenzer,

boordcomputer). Al deze bedieningsknoppen zijn voorzien van een originele toplaag die de structuur van de huid benadert. De interface met bestuurder is optimaal dankzij de sensoren. Het geraffineerde instrumentenpaneel van de C5 Airscape komt tegemoet aan de vraag naar een optimale ergonomie en is perfect afleesbaar. De drie wijzerplaten met ringvormige wijzers symboliseren het hoge technologische niveau. De wijzers bewegen overigens niet over de platen, maar draaien eromheen voor een mooiere vormgeving en een betere leesbaarheid. De luchtroosters naast de klokken en de als een luchtinlaat gevormde bovenkant van het instrumentenpaneel benadrukken het krachtige karakter van de cabriolet. Het geheel komt goed tot zijn recht dankzij het pure en welgevormde ontwerp van het dashboard met rechte lijnen die symbool staan voor precisie en zachte rondingen die de dynamiek van het ontwerp benadrukken. Zo heeft de bestuurder alles perfect onder controle terwijl hij geniet van een opmerkelijk rijcomfort. De stijl van de C5 Airscape is indrukwekkend, maar dat geldt ook voor de dynamische eigenschappen van de auto. De concept car is uitgerust met een V6 HDi motor met roetfilter die ook op biodiesel werkt, Snow Motion antislipregeling die zorgt voor rijeigenschappen

die vergelijkbaar zijn met een vierwielaangedreven auto, en het UrbanHybrid-systeem voor beperkt brandstofverbruik en CO2-uitstoot. Deze combinatie maakt van de C5 Airscape een auto met opmerkelijke eigenschappen en respect voor het milieu.

Techniek in dienst van het milieu Dankzij een omkeerbare dynamostarter die is verbonden met supercondensators waarin tijdelijk grote hoeveelheden energie kunnen worden opgeslagen, biedt het UrbanHybridsysteem onmiskenbare voordelen op het gebied van milieubescherming, rijplezier, akoestiek en veercomfort. De motor wordt in de stand Drive bij een snelheid van minder dan 6 km/h en bij ingetrapt rempedaal uitgeschakeld. Voor een optimaal rijcomfort start deze automatisch zodra de bestuurder het rempedaal loslaat. Als de auto stilstaat wordt geen brandstof verbruikt en de CO2-uitstoot wordt in de gecombineerde cyclus met 24 g /km verminderd. Bovendien wordt de energie die vrijkomt tijdens vertragen en afremmen opgeslagen en gebruikt om het boordnet (airconditioning, radio, etcetera) te voeden. Dit leidt tot een lager brandstofverbruik en minder uitstoot. Het koppel kan met behulp van de ‘boost’functie kortstondig worden verhoogd, bijvoorbeeld tijdens een inhaalmanoeuvre, om extra snel te kunnen accelereren.

Rijplezier en goede prestaties onder alle omstandigheden Dat de C5 Airscape tot het topsegment behoort, wordt nog eens bevestigd door de aanwezigheid van een 2.7 V6 HDi motor met roetfilter. Deze krachtige motor levert een vermogen van 150 kW (208 pk) bij 4.000 tpm en een koppel van 440 Nm bij 1.900 tpm. he TS Codatronca sportscar is the first creation of Spadaconcept, a new Italian design studio founded by designer Ercole Spada. With this car Spadaconcept cherishes and revives the important heritage of Ercole Spada and the philosophy which characterized each of his creations. The company’s vision is centered on “functional design”, which, according to Ercole Spada, means toallow functionality of an object to express itself through its shape. Following this

vision Spadaconcept came up with a genuinely breaking product, something bold an daring. Far from creating a show car where anything is allowed, Spadaconcept has worked within strict feasibility constraints in order to reach the quality standards of a niche, handcrafted production, maximizing performance by introducingaerody-

namic lines such to mould a light and essential body. The result is an extremely stable and manageable car, able to achieve good racing performances by exploiting at the best the power of it engine, with an original and nimble shape and essential but elegant interiors. The first version, named TS (Turismo Sportivo), is

a car with an aspired engine of more than 600horse with race performances. Despite the focus at Spadaconcept wasn’t on “pure” power but rather on aerodynamics, lightness and handling, this car can still reach more than 340 km/h and complies with the FIA GT1 regulations. Care for environmental issues has resulted in SapdaVettureSport’s decision to add to the menu an ad hoc “converter kit” which allows fueling the car with E85 green fuel, with a slight increase in torque and power. With this new sport car Spadaconcept aims at reviving the philosophy that inspired Ercole Spada’s past models, in an attempt to combine aesthetics with functionality and racing performances. This new model is the latest evolutionary step of the truncated tail – “coda tronca” in Italian. The typical and aerodynamic shape which Spada had introduced with the Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ, TZ1 and TZ2 in the 60’s - gives this new car unique and nimble lines which bring in lightness and aerodynamics improving performances. TS Codatronca, will be produced and marketed by SpadaVettureSport - a company created and controlled by Spadaconcept - in collaboration with a team of selected technical, industrial and commercial partners. SpadaVettureSport has aggregated the highest profile resources around this project by establishing strategic alliances mainly with small firms located in the district of Turin with great past histories and amazing skills. These partners have great tradition and specialization and allow SpadaVettureSport to combine the

“best of breed” in technology with the tradition and “saper fare” – i.e. the Italian for know how - of Italian small firms. The industrial partner FS Group (a firm based near Turin, who has already realized prototypes for Mercedes, Smart, Range Rover) will realize the body, using material supplied by Elantas Camattini, and PPG. The partner Italtecnica (a small firm located in Cambiano, near Turin, already involved in the tuning of ParisDakar and Le mans cars for Peugeot) will work on braking system, suspensions and engine upgrade, Sparco - the manufacturer of tuning products based in Turin – will supply seats and

other interior items, Pirelli and OZ Racing will provide respectively tires and wheels. For the launch of this supercar SpadaVettureSport has signed a co-branding and co-marketing agreement with AZNOM, a small company based in Monza operating in the production of accessories and luxury items, who will realise and market a line of amenities with the Codatronca brand. The agreement signed by SpadaVettureSport and AZNOM has a long term perspective and involves joint efforts to approach the market. The Codatronca TS version was presented in world première this spring in Montecarlo. According to SpadaVettureSport the TS version is a first step which will be shortly followed by others upcoming. The more powerful TSS version - Turismo Super Sportivo – which is already under test at SpadaVettureSport, will be launched at the end of 2008. n

The A8GCS Berlinetta signed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Two different and attractive projects have been unveiled, based on two completely different approaches, which represent a contemporary interpretation of the essential and traditional Carrozzeria Touring parameters: elegant sportyness, quality of design, well-thought proportions and meticulous execution.

The first prototype, the berlinetta A8GCS is a high performance sports car, of compact and relatively small dimensions, state-of-the-art assembling technology and perfect synthesis of styling between factory tradition and advanced aesthetic criteria. The person behind these prototypes is the young Belgian designer Louis de Fabribeckers, who is in charge of the Touring designing department. The A8GCS lines are fluent and timeless. There is a soft aggressiveness created by the balance between the front end, directly derived from competition, and the harmonious and well proportioned flanks reminiscent of the extraordinary Touring cars of the 20s-30s (such as the Alfa Romeo, Isotta Fraschini and Lancia Flying Star), which are still considered to be “icons� of car design.


The reduced front overhang, front central engine and large rear overhang, are key elements in describing the Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera style. The result is a dynamic shape that does not need a lowered waistline. Moreover, the way the horizontal lines flow creates a natural elegance. The mechanics for the A8GCS is that of the Maserati Coupé Gran Sport, a V8 developing 400 HP, to which it obviously pays tribute. The use of updated Borrani spoke wheels, adds this berlinetta a certain air of nostalgia as well as catching the eye. With this project, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera illustrates an ambitious in-depth research and development programme for both advanced automotive design, as well as a redefinition of the Superleggera concept according to modern standards. Reduced overall dimensions, compactness, lightness and thoroughly aerodynamically tested, the A8GCS Berlinetta Touring bodywork is designed to wrap itself around a newly developed Touring aluminium chassis and Maserati mechanical parts in an optimal and bold way.

For the prototype A8GCS Berlinetta Touring, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera studied and designed a body in advanced composite materials, able to give the car lightness, structural strenght and performance typical of top granturismo and obviously respecting all international safety and environmental rules. The result is clear: the style protoype A8GCS Berlinetta Touring is able to enter small series production, gaining immediately a top place among the best sports cars.

There couldn’t be a better scenario than the 2008 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance for the debut of the stylish A8GCS Berlinetta Touring prototype, a berlinetta GT marking the return of the famous Milan coachbuilders, among the leaders of the Italian automotive school. Based on the Maserati Coupé GranSport mechanics, the A8GCS Berlinetta Touring represents the high performance sports car concept, with small dimensions, state-of-the-art constructive technology and perfect stylish synthesis between factory tradition and advanced aesthetic criteria. The new A8GCS Berlinetta Touring has been designed by the young Belgian designer Louis de Fabribeckers, in charge of the Touring styling department.

T

he 30 year old Belgian designer Louis de Fabribeckers is an up and coming figure in the car design world. Louis studied architecture in Brussels, but admits that he “missed the wheels.” After studying at the design school Institut supérieur de design, in Valenciennes, France, he went on to work for BMW and BMW. Dutch business man Paul Koot bought the name Touring, which had been out of business since 1996, in 2006. Koot asked de Fabribeckers to join the firm. The ressurrection of Touring provided our young designer with new opportunities, in the form of the A8GGS and the Bellagio.

The A8GCS Berlinetta Touring lines are not affected by time or fashion: the car is characterized by a soft aggressiveness originated by the perfect balance between the front end, directly derived from competitions, and the harmonious and fluent flanks reminding of the extraordinary Alfa Romeo, Isotta Fraschini and Lancia Flying Star of the Thirties, an exceptional series created by Touring and still considered the best interpretation of Marinetti and Boccioni’s Futurism. The Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera style is first expressed through perfecly balanced volumes (reduced front overhang, front central engine and large rear overhang). The result is a dynamic form that doesn’t need a lowered waistline. Moreover, the horizontal development of lines create a natural elegance.

he other prototype launched, the Bellagio Fastback Touring is a homage to the Maserati Quattroporte model. The most luxurious Italian saloon car of the post-War period has actually been turned into a sporty station wagon with rear door and large loading space, to offer the market a top level car identical to the saloon. It weighs only 50 Kg more and does not need particular homologation. It’s the ideal car for those who need a high performing car also for leisure, with seats to accommodate four adults in maximum comfort and a series of sport equipment, luggage and whatever necessary in one’s spare time. Not only is the Bellagio Fastback Touring made to measure in colours, interiors and desired accessories, but also with tailormade solutions for its owner.

The whole process starts short after the delivery of a Maserati Quattroporte saloon, of any version. The work begins and is carried out together with the customer, who will be involved in any decision making process: a unique and fascinating experience, unthinkable in the era of mass production even for the most exclusive and extreme cars. The price of a Bellagio Fastback Touring depends on the basic saloon version chosen and materials being used. Even the most demanding client can have a custom-built car, but only very few can have a car signed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. n

ult’s second nature When it comes to the birth of a new car, you won’t find the word boring in Renault’s vocabulary. First comes an imaginative concept, a drawing-board car, then, some sunny morning, you see the concept realised, cruising your neighbourhood in the form of a striking automobile.

N

ot so long ago came the surprising Avantime, then the agressive-looking second generation Laguna, the astonishing Vel Satis, and last but not least, the Mégane. Introduced in 2002, some found its departures from convention unsettling, especially the distinctive rear in the shape of a barouche, but it has established its place as a unique and imaginative design. Now the series is due to be replaced and a new Mégane will appear in the showrooms in October. Renault has done a hell of a job with the new Mégane and deserves to be know once more as: Créateur d’ Automobiles, a slogan they used for several years in marketing campaigns, now long forgotten. Let ‘s go back to the beginning with the Mégane Coupé Concept in Geneva.

MÉGANE COUPÉ CONCEPT: AN EXTREME EXPRESSION OF CHARACTER AND DYNAMISM Renault has chosen the Geneva Motor Show to take the wraps off its Mégane Coupé Concept show car which, foreshadows a compact production coupe to be released at a later date.

he different controls have been inspired by the Renault-pioneered Touch Design approach and are both simple and practical. The central multimedia control is coupled with a display divided into three zones. The central part displays all journey-related information (navigation, radio, music, video, Bluetooth® telephone), while the screens either side show the images relayed by cameras incorporated in the exterior mirrors. Mégane Coupé Concept is locked and unlocked using a Samsung F700

The cabin equipment is modern and intuitive mobile phone which serves as a hands-free card and connects to the centre console. Both rear passengers benefit from a portable Samsung P2 audio/video multimedia player with touch screen which they can use to swap files using the mp3/ video Bluetooth controls. The four-zone climate control system allows each passenger to select the temperature they prefer using controls housed either side of the dashboard for front passengers or on the front seatbacks for rear occupants. Special care has also gone into ensuring that the cabin is brightly lit. The red backlighting of the instruments contrasts with the surrounding black backgrounds. Meanwhile, the panoramic windscreen extends over the roof to provide additional clarity during the day and blue-hued cabin lighting at night.

T

he four independent tubes that make up the modern rear lights are housed in the bodywork and serve as a further illustration of the dynamic, technological spirit behind Mégane Coupé Concept. Day or night, they form a highly distinctive signature. The boot, which pulls open and then lifts to minimize vertical travel, echoes the kinematics of the doors, which are divided into two sections. The panelled door itself is topped by a separate glazed area and, as they open, the two parts deploy gracefully and elegantly in an independent movement redolent of dragonfly wings. A carbon arm at the rear of the doors connects them to the body structure and the system ensures particularly easy access for passengers. In addition to its practical aspect, this technological feature reveals a cabin that blends effortlessly with the elegance and energy expressed by the exterior.

The cabin

The New Mégane series: Designed to seduce Renault’s Design Department worked closely with the project engineers from a very early stage to incorporate styling cues into New Mégane’s genetic make-up suggestive of the world of sport. The result is a family hatchback of 4.30m in length with a dynamic presence, thanks particularly to its short front and rear overhang, a 2.64m wheelbase, steeplyraked roofline and wide tracks.

The interior brings to mind the world of contemporary furniture. The independent, asymmetric front seats, which rise up from the sills, seem to float in midair. Their wafer-like forms express an airy lightness, while their enveloping design is a pledge of comfort and holds the occupants firmly in place. The aperture revealed by the open doors carries over to the front seat shells and the upper part of the two rear seats. This sculptural, one-piece structure, which is finished in fire red lacquer, ensures a seamless link between the exterior and the cabin. The centre console extends through to the rear seats and its layered design recalls the striated bar of the headlamp modules. The futuristic, ethereal dashboard features expressive, flowing lines and can be divided into two distinct sections: the red lacquered main structure and black nubuck inserts which can hold small items. This embedded zone houses the sophisticated instrumentation which takes its inspiration from aviator-style watches, including a speedometer which displays the speed in analogue form on the periphery and in digital form in the centre, plus an analogue rev-counter. Both feature black metallic backgrounds with white graphics and red backlighting. The choice of colours and materials is another means by which the exterior and interior have been harmonized to highlight Mégane Coupé Concept’s volumes and magic. The iridescent Dragon Grey body-colour goes well with the dragonfly-like door-opening mechanism and the paintwork’s rainbow finish gives a fresh vision of the car every time the light changes: even at a standstill, it appears to be in movement. Meanwhile, the interior’s contrasting colour-scheme underpins the dynamic exterior thanks to the blend of fire red lacquer (dashboard, upper part of the centre console, front seatbacks, etc.) and softer black leather or nubuck for the door panels, seat cushions and centre console). The door panels themselves incorporate supple, slide-locking stowage, while the floor is protected by a black, modern, graphic mesh. Carrying over the red of the interior, there are hints of red outside, too, including the roofline, foglamp surrounds, wheel spokes and exhaust tailpipes.

A show car dedicated to passion

The Mégane Coupé Concept’s generous bumper, wide, low grille and alveolar air-intake point to the presence of a high-performance powerplant under the bonnet. Indeed, Mégane Coupé Concept is powered by a 200hp (147kW) 2.0 Turbo petrol engine which delivers torque of 280Nm at 2,600rpm and peak power of 200hp at 5,800rpm to ensure punch and flexibility at all engine speeds for everyday motoring pleasure. Mated to a manual six-speed gearbox, the 2-litre turbocharged unit drives Mégane Coupé Concept from a standstill to


100kph in just 7.2 seconds, yet it returns economical fuel consumption of just 6.5 litres/100km (154g of CO2/km). In order to exploit this engine to the full, Mégane Coupé Concept features a sport chassis, plus suspension and steering engineered to guarantee precise, responsive handling. This promise is compounded by the 21-inch aluminium alloy, seven-spoke, satin-finish Dragon Grey wheels equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres (245/35) which provide outstanding grip for even greater driving pleasure. Mégane Coupé Concept is a compact, stylish, dynamic coupe, which delivers undeniable driving pleasure, while its sporty calling is also expressed by its modern, elegant cabin. This show car, which builds on the trend established by Laguna Coupé Concept, sees Renault take its desire to dial genuine passion into its cars yet another step forward.

Distinctive looks that exude personality and dynamism Mégane Coupé Concept provides a foretaste of the forthcoming Mégane Coupe. “This show car emphatically showcases the evolution at Renault Design. Its squatter proportions and powerful, energetic styling talk directly to the driver’s senses; they say ‘driving pleasure’. The spectacular, unprecedented door-opening kinematics add that little touch of magic which contributes to the dream factor associated with the automobile,” explains Renault’s Patrick Le Quément, Senior Vice President, Corporate Design. Of a total length of 4.51 metres, Mégane Coupé Concept features a modern, dynamic silhouette with taut lines that seem to suggest perpetual movement, while its alert, expressive front-end looks point at once to a truly dynamic personality. The juxtaposition of headlamp modules with aluminium-finish air-intakes also conveys an impression of fluidity and movement. The two rows of main and dipped beam lights sit on a crystal-like striated strip which fills the sidelight and daytime running light functions. The headlamps use high-performance light-emitting diodes which are both long-lasting and extremely efficient. The foglamps also employ LED technology and blend harmoniously with the dynamic, front-end styling. The shoulder-lines flow along the curvaceous sides before culminating in a squat rear-end which expresses power and movement.

Not so long ago came the surprising Avantime, then the agressive-looking second generation Laguna, the astonishing Vel Satis, and last but not least, Introduced in 2002: the Mégane.

ercedes presenteert in Detroit een opvallende conceptcar; de Concept Ocean Drive. De vierdeurs cabriolet is gebaseerd op de S-klasse maar is ondanks de grote overeenkomsten met de limousine een compleet nieuw ontworpen model. Productiekansen lijkt Mercedes niet uit te sluiten. Mercedes heeft inmiddels een reputatie als pionier en trendsetter op het gebied van opvallende segmenten en ontwerpen. Neem de R-klasse, de A-klasse en de vele conceptcars die Mercedes in de afgelopen jaren presenteerde. De autofabrikant uit Stuttgart laat een langgekoesterde droom nu in vervulling gaan. De Duitsers presenteren op de NAIAS in Detroit een vierdeurs cabriolet. Een autosegment dat al tientallen jaren uit het straatbeeld is verdwenen komt hiermee weer tot leven.

Gebaseerd op de S-klasse

De Concept Ocean Drive is gebaseerd op de S600. Ondanks dat is het model compleet nieuw ontworpen. De ontwerpers hadden geen ontwerpvoorwaarden en mochten zich volgens Mercedes naar hartelust uitleven. Het resultaat is een elegante, stijlvolle en zeer exclusieve cabriolet. Volgens Mercedes is de Ocean Drive geschikt om comfortabel te kruisen over de mooiste boulevards ter wereld.

Airscarf

Kenmerkend voor de Ocean Drive zijn behalve de vier portieren ook de grote verticaal geplaatste grille, de LED-kop- en achterlampen en de tweekleurige lak. De lange opening van de zijruiten die, zoals dat hoort bij een cabriolet, niet door de Bstijl of de raamstijlen wordt onderbroken, zorgt voor een naadloze overgang tussen de buitenkant en het interieur, zelfs wanneer de kap gesloten is. Het dak is van stof en opent en sluit geheel automatisch. Het interieur is afgewerkt met de meest luxe en exclusieve materialen waaronder 3D-effect-stoffen en ahornhout. Om ook tijdens de koudere periodes van het open rijden te kunnen genieten zijn alle vier de stoelen voorzien van Airscarf. Airscarf is een verwarmingssysteem voor de nek, dat debuteerde in de SLK.

ercedes-Benz designers frequently have visions of dream cars like the Concept Ocean Drive luxury convertible, but only a few such visions make it beyond the drawing board and get to be presented before a wider audience. This design study is one such exception. In the absence of virtually any constraints in the form of a design brief, production specifications or market demands, the designers were able to get on with the exciting job of building the world’s most comfortable and elegant convertible, in the form of an elaborate one-off special. The result is an awe-inspiring jewel on wheels with which MercedesBenz is reviving its large four-door convertible tradition –a luxury automobile genre that has almost disappeared from our roads. The last four-door convertibles produced by Mercedes-Benz were built-toorder 300d cabriolet models which left the Stuttgart production lines in 1962. The Concept Ocean Drive model is revisiting and reinterpreting this luxury convertible tradition 45 years down the line in a oneoff design study. Like its famous predecessors, the showpiece from Stuttgart features the maximum in elegance, lifestyle sophistication and exclusiveness. To put it another way, it represents automobile culture at its most attractive and desirable.

Clearly defined lines and two-tone paintwork First and foremost however, the seductive Concept Ocean Drive four-door convertible is an exercise in sensual appeal, based on the technical platform of the Mercedes-Benz S 600 with long wheelbase (3165 millimetres) and twelve-cylinder engine. The one-off special has an all-new body with an almost classic flavour and with clearly defined lines and vibrant two-tone paintwork which are exceptionally charismatic. Although on one level it displays the restraint of an elite and aristocratic automobile, the design study is also an open invitation to go on a “topless”, carefree cruise along the world’s finest ocean promenades, in the drowsy warmth of a summer evening. The study combines youthful enthusiasm with genuine passion and healthy selfconfidence. This is never marred even when the soft top has to be raised over the four luxurious single seats. Certainly the car is equipped with the technical innovations which put Mercedes-Benz models among the leading pioneers in the luxury class – but its “dream car” character is centred more on extrovert self-confidence. The four-door convertible study proudly boasts luxurious and unusual materials and meticulous craftsmanship; its uncompromising perfection makes it a masterpiece whose unique qualities are likely to appeal to those who want, most of all, to rise above the mundane and ordinary.

Design excellence reflects the philosophy of the brand The Concept Ocean Drive turns a “dream car” vision into reality. At the same time it is also an affirmation of the design excellence and values of the Mercedes-Benz brand. Design has a dual task: on the one hand to produce exciting lines and shapes and on the other to express and visualise the brand identity. This identity is founded on the values of Mercedes-Benz such as excellent build and quality, comfort, effortless superiority, good value retention and safety.

Design study with space for new ideas There’s one dream, however, that the new luxury convertible from Stuttgart can’t hope to satisfy, namely that of owning it. Being a design study, it remains firmly “unattainable”. That said, however, as a design study it isn’t just designed to inspire dreams and fantasies but also serves a very practical purpose. Because whereas Mercedes-Benz concept or research vehicles are developed to test new vehicle concepts and technologies, design studies are a good opportunity for designers to play around with less familiar topics, to see things from new angles, to explore new ideas and to give fantasies an airing in the real world.

The Mercedes-Benz design philosophy both perpetuates proven styling themes associated with the brand and at the same time combines them with new and surprising ideas and forms. The Concept Ocean Drive is a good example of this. It too reflects the basic design idioms and typical hallmarks of the brand. Needless to say these include the radiator grille, which despite its new treatment is instantly recognisable as belonging to a Mercedes. Other characteristic features of the current Mercedes-Benz style include purity and lucidity of form, with a striking interplay between taut lines and large, restful surfaces, and a rejection of excessive ornamentation in favour of enduring appeal. This gives the design study an air of effortless superiority, power, elegance and forward-flowing energy.

The Concept Ocean Drive is not just a pure design exercise and is more than just a playground for new ideas and perspectives. It is also a way of stimulating a closer dialogue with customers and of trying out new ideas for cars of tomorrow on the general public. This helps the designers get a feel for future styling trends and to develop and implement new design idioms. In the words of Professor Peter Pfeiffer, Mercedes Car Group, Senior Vice President Design: “Our automobile designers have the important task of identifying –and also setting – trends. They must be aware of currents and undercurrents in art, culture and society and must have an intuitive nose – at a very early stage – for what’s coming next. Designers are always working in the future. We can never stand still but must keep thinking further and further ahead.”

Distinctive and unexpected styling touches like the slightly downwardsloping line above the rear wheel arch and the new headlamp treatment help to define the special character of the unique Concept Ocean Drive. And the long side-window opening, which is not interrupted by a B-pillar or a window frame, ensures seamless continuity between the exterior and the interior, even when the top is up. Extensive use of high-quality materials – such as very soft leather, 3D-effect materials or large bird’s eye maple trim panels (in the interior and also on the soft top compartment cover – and many other thoughtfully designed interior details highlight the luxurious, unique character of this design study. n

Three years after the Birdcage 75th, Pininfarina returns with the Sintesi, a new concept car that explores ideas and solutions for the car of the future. The Pininfarina Sintesi besides being a mouthful to say is also a zero emissions fuel cell vehicle rich in Italian design. The futuristic Sintesi (meaning “synthesis”) is meant to communicate with the traffic technology of the future.

“The Sintesi is not only a testament to the creativeness of our design team,” declared Andrea Pininfarina, Chairman and CEO of the Group, “but it reiterates our historical ability to anticipate stylistic and technological solutions that we will see in the cars of the future.” The Pininfarina Sintesi is a sports car with four doors and four seats, developed by a highly innovative approach: it does not consider the car as a shape that covers the mechanicals, but one that gives a shape to the mechanicals around the passengers, starting from the latter. This approach, which is known as “Liquid” Packaging, has overturned traditional volumetric balances, improving weight distribution and lowering the centre of gravity, which are important elements for driving dynamics. This was made possible by close collaboration with Nuvera, which developed the Quadrivium Fuel Cells system, the various components of which were distributed around the car, with four fuel cells positioned near to the wheels. The result is that the space for passengers is much more generous - in proportion to the total volume of the car - without detracting from

the sporty line with its relaxed, elegant profile which is sleek, tapered and aerodynamic (Cd = 0.27). The modular nature of the fuel cells, combined with the batteries and a sophisticated overall electronic architecture (developed with PI Shurlok), allows for modular use of the available power depending on driving conditions. “Our source of inspiration,” said Lowie Vermeersch, Pininfarina Design Director, “was man’s freedom over technology, a car in which technology gives creative freedom back to the designer and allows us to explore new forms and future scenarios. But at the same time, we did not want everything to be limited to a flight of fancy, we wanted our approach to be very concrete. Which is why we combined and tested our ideas with the innovative technologies provided by our partners in this project.” The Pininfarina Sintesi was imagined in a setting of Transparent Mobility which, thanks to Clancast ®, the radio technology developed by Reicom after years of research, envisages that all cars act as nerve cells, creating a dynamic communications network managed by a disseminated intelligence. connective tissue” on which data and information about traffic and security, audio and video, Internet and cross-media content can travel. A concept of wireless connectivity that establishes a continuous, transparent dialogue between the town, the road and the vehicles that we will drive in the future, without limiting the motorist’s autonomy, but increasing his sense of freedom. This futuristic scenario, based on concrete, existing technology, opens the door to advanced active safety solutions which in turn have made it possible to design the car with volumes that are not conditioned by today’s bulky passive safety systems.

The important role played by electronics in the Pininfarina Sintesi project is also evident in the design of the interior and the lights. Inside, the facia symbolises the flow of information in which the car moves. Created as a single semi-transparent piece by Materialise, using the additive technology of personalised manufacturing, its shape disseminates the information around the passenger compartment thanks to the intuitive use of colour and light. The lights become focal points through which the car dialogues with its environment. In addition to the innovative LED system supplied by Osram, which made it possible to create a simple, strong shape that underlines the car’s central axis, the ‘headlights’ also incorporate the telecameras and the proximity radar system.


All wireless traffic infrastructure including the traffic signals, lights and other road signals will be displayed inside the cockpit of the vehicle making the Pininfarina Sintesi a very smart car indeed. What’s also smart about this vehicle is the use of four Nuvera Quadrivium fuel cells, mounted inside each wheel, providing power to the four electric motors for nimble agility as well as torque. The Pininfarina Sintesi has a top speed of 115 mph and can scoot from 0 to 60 mph in just 7.5 seconds. The vehicle’s fuel cell is based upon Nuvera’s Andromeda fuel cell plus STAR hydrogen generator. With the Sintesi, Pininfarina has introduced a couple of novel concepts including “Liquid Packaging” and “Transparent Mobility.” Liquid Packaging refers to the concept of the Pininfarina

Sintesi putting the fuel cells and motors in each wheel, freeing up space for passengers and driver. Without the traditional engine and drivetrain at the front of the vehicle, the weight is better distributed through the vehicle and this also opens up many design options not available with traditional vehicles.

Pininfarina has been around since the 1930s as a coachbuilder and auto design firm that has work with most of the largest European automakers and more recently even with U. S. automakers as well. The Pininfarina Sintesi is a four-door, four-seat sports car with unique design and engineering that a few years down the line, may make a few Maserati owners turn in their gas hogs for a classy Italian zero emissions vehicle with a little pep.

Transparent Mobility refers to the futuristic communication system where a vehicle such as the Pininfarina Sintesi can exchange information with other vehicles and traffic technology, seamlessly and transparently through wireless technology. This smart technology will lead to safer driving as drivers will be alerted to potential dangers on the roads ahead.

INTERVIEW WITH LOWIE VERMEERSCH Lowie Vermeersch, Pininfarina Design Director and, since August 2007, head of a team of designers from Italy and all over the world, is the author of this new concept car. We asked him how Sintesi wasborn. The project was the result of a combination, a synthesis, between desire and intuition: the desire to commence a project from scratch, to look forward and explore that creative freedom you fi nd when you get beyond the prejudices and constraints to which we are accustomed. And at the same time it was our perception that this was the right time to do so because the new technologies that are arriving on the scene will allow us to reconsider many of the limitations and prejudices that infl uence car design today. This balance between creative freedom and concreteness is in Pininfarina’s DNA. And we also fi nd these elements in our design team which is made up of expert designers – who have been responsible for many of Pininfarina’s most beautiful cars in recent decades – and young talents who are led to look “beyond”, to cultivate ideas and visions for the future. It’s a bit like saying that to put your name to a Pininfarina car you’ve got to dare? Yes, you can never rest on your laurels. Our Honorary Chairman, Sergio Pininfarina, says that “the important thing is for your courage never to fail” and I like to think of Sintesi as a challenge we are launching into the future, an across-theboard challenge. Because, as you will learn, we have not only designed the skin of Sintesi, but we began from the heart, the muscles and brain to create a completely new object, to explore the likely scenarios of the car industry in the years to come.

In short, should we be looking at Sintesi with our minds switched on to the future? Exactly. Imagine this as a project for the future. In addition to what is possible today, it has given us the freedom to start from scratch, from a blank sheet of paper, without the traditional starting points. At the same time we did not want everything to boil down to a fl ight of fancy, we wanted a very concrete approach. So everything began with some interesting discussions about what role the new technologies like fuel cells and batteries would play in the project. This gave us a precise understanding of the approach we would adopt: not to consider the car as a form which covers mechanical parts and passengers, but rather to give form to the mechanical parts around the passengers and starting from the passengers. We have called

this method “Liquid” Packaging and we have associated it with the use of a Fuel Cell drive train. With Sintesi we were not so much constructing a car as experimenting with new ideas and future scenarios beyond the car, without however expecting to achieve a fi nal solution.

What does Sintesi have in common with Nido and Birdcage 75th, Pininfarina’s most recent concepts? Nido and Birdcage 75th had marked the two aspects of Pininfarina research which also inspires Sintesi: the sportiness of Birdcage 75th dream car and the search for functionality in Nido. Everything was injected with a strong vocation for the future and encapsulated in a beautiful casing expressing the Pininfarina line. How would you defi ne the stylistic research in this project? Faithful to the canons inherent in Pininfarina styling. Like all Pininfarina cars, rather than describe Sintesi, you should look at it, touch it, be excited by it, want to drive it and take a trip in it into the future of the car. n

Concept NIEUWS Land Rover LRX concept

and Rover werkt aan een compleet nieuw type ‘4x4’ : een sportieve ‘cross-over coupé’. In januari toont de Britse constructeur deze LRX Concept op het autosalon van Detroit (VS) om de reacties van het publiek te peilen. Wij konden hem met een select groepje journalisten al in ‘sneek preview’ in Londen bekijken. En neem het van ons aan; hij is nog mooier dan de foto’s doen vermoeden. Ergens in 2009 mogen we hem effectief in productie verwachten, belooft chief-designer Gerry McGovern. De LRX Concept heeft nog wel stijlkenmerken van de klassieke Land Rover zoals de schelpvormige motorkap, maar hij is tegelijk met geen enkel ander model te vergelijken. Met z’n 4,35 meter lengte is hij 7 cm korter dan de Freelander. Hij is ook 12 cm lager. Het ‘zwevende dak’ met de zwarte stijlen en de gordellijn onder de zijruiten lopen naar achteren tapsgewijs naar elkaar toe. Het geeft de auto een wigvormig, snel ogend profiel.

Eco-rijden De drie deuren maken hem een coupé, maar de grote 20 duims wielen doen ‘m hoog op z’n poten staan als een 4x4. Hij heeft hetzelfde ‘Terrain Response’ 4x4 systeem als de Freelander, trouw aan z’n roots. Nieuw is een speciale ‘eco-stand’ voor zuinig rijden. Leuk detail daarbij is dat de indirecte interieurverlichting van kleur wisselt afhankelijk van de rijstijl: groen voor ‘eco-rijden’, rood voor sportief en blauw in standaard modus. Binnenin kunnen vier personen plaatsnemen in stijlvolle, superslanke designzetels die boven de vloer lijken te ‘zweven’. Ze zijn van alle overbodig gewicht ontdaan, want deze Land Rover moet drastisch lichter worden dan we gewoon zijn. Zo zijn de zijruiten en het dak niet in glas, maar in het 40% lichtere polycarbonaat. Een kwestie van brandstof te besparen en tegelijk de CO2-uitstoot terug te schroeven. Land Rover wil nog geen details over de motorisatie van deze LRX kwijt, maar vermoedelijk wordt het een hybride. Deze ‘kleine’ Land Rover is zeker niet als instapmodel bedoeld. Integendeel. Het moet een ‘premium’ model worden, een sportief en compact alternatief voor de statige Range Rover. Dat zie je ook aan het luxueuze interieur met de smaakvolle lederen bekleding

en de vele futuristische snufjes die erin verwerkt zitten.

Zwevende vensters Zo zitten aan de binnenkant de handgrepen in de deur verborgen, maar als je met je hand in de buurt komt, springen ze er grijpensklaar uit. Het futuristisch dashboard in doorschijnend plexi presenteert de informatie in ‘zwevende vensters’ aan de chauffeur, met de belangrijkste info vooraan. Je kan als chauffeur ook die informatie verslepen naar het centrale display, als je dat wenst. Nog meer gegoochel met muziek, internet en telefoon kan met de ingewerkte Apple iPhone. Voor de fuifnummers zitten achterin zelfs een champagnekoeler en een frigobox ingebouwd, tussen twee uitklapbare luidsprekers van de ‘premium’ hifi.

Mazda Furai concept

This is the latest teaser image of a new concept from Mazda. Though the photo itself reveals very little, we’re told the concept was inspired by the fact that more Mazda-powered racing cars frequent US circuits than any other brand. Using Mazda’s unique Nagare design language, the concept car is based on an American Le Mans Series (ALMS) race car and employs the company’s Courage C65 chassis and a unique 450hp three-rotor rotary engine. “Mazda’s critically acclaimed Nagare design language describes the flow of water, air, people or things moving in one direction.” says Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda’s North American director of design. “Mazda Nagare is flow, with an insightful and spirited styling, which, in Mazda Furai, invokes a raw, unfettered desire to possess everything this car represents.”

A

prototype of the next-generation Honda Pilot will be unveiled at the NAIAS in January. At the moment all we have to go on is this sketch, which depicts a chunky, more agressive vehicle with bulging wheelarches and large wheels. Honda is telling us that the prototype will ‘convey design features of a more boldly-styled, next-generation Pilot’ which aims to emphasize authentic SUV styling, convenience features and clever interior packaging. As always, we’ll share our opinions of the concept from the Detroit Auto Show floor.

Skoda Superb

This is the first image Skoda has released of its all-new Superb, scheduled to be unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2008. Skoda’s flagship model is based on parent company Volkswagen’s Passat architecture and is claimed to ‘offer a generouslysized interior and a number of smart solutions’ within the cabin. The second-generation Superb also takes some design cues from the Passat, including the front bumper clip, headlamps and door mirrors, to maintain the overall stance of its platform sibling. As the current generation Passat already borrows design cues from VW’s range-topping Phaeton, the Superb also seems to be moving upmarket. Power will likely be sourced from the same petrol and diesel engines used in next year’s Passat models, and include a new common-rail diesel unit.


BMW Concept X6

The Concept X6 is a production design in all but the smallest detail and lack of interior: it is a new type of crossover that marries SUV and coupe typologies in equal proportion. Based on the platform of the X5, the X6 differs in being a little lower and having a far more coupe-like DLO and general profile with a fastback tailgate and a shorter rear deck than the 6 Series or 3 Series coupe.

rue to form, BMW has revealed the production version of its new X6 ‘Sports Activity Coupe’ looking almost exactly like the concept version shown in Frankfurt earlier this year. The new X6, which follows closely from other BMW X models save for the flowing coupe-like roofline, is the third SAV launched by the company. The name itself is meant to shake off any negative association that people have with traditional SUVs, and instead highlight the sporting style for which BMWs are renowned. It seems fairly appropriate then that with this new model, BMW has opted for a design language that communicates an athletic aesthetic meant to emphasize the driving characteristics offered by BMWs. The sport aspect continues to the interior, with tense surfaces blending into one another. Kneepads are present on both sides of the center console and the transmission can be shifted via paddles on the steering wheel, a standard feature. The elevated individual four seats, giving a commanding seating position, are divided by a center console running the width of the cabin. The luggage compartment is entirely separate as it is in a coupe.

Elements of the recent Concept CS shown in Shanghai are evident in the bone line running above the broad concave side surface, the integrated exhaust outlets pushed to the sides, and the way that the Concept X6 ActiveHybrid (running a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain) had surfaces inset within the front bumpers wrapping around into brake cooling air inlets. Other interesting design details include headlamps that push into the hood surface, blades that run into the front driving lights, a new type of door mirror design incorporating LED running lights, and a TT inspired rear window shape. The rear lights seem to have missed the potential to connect the strong side feature with the horizontal aspects of the rear, and the kink at the base of the DLO adjacent to the mirror also seems odd. Otherwise the X6 is a handsome car that holds few surprises and balances its dynamic and robust genes well. And, despite coupeSUV crossover concepts having appeared from many brands for nearly a decade, when the X6 launches, BMW will be first to the market with this type of car.

og even de laatste twee concepten van Nissan er doorheen drukken en dan hebben we alle vier concepten van Nissan op de Tokyo Motor Show gehad. Na de Pivo 2 en de Round Box komt Nissan ook met de Intima en de NV200.

Nissan Intima concept Eén van de meest realistische modellen tussen al die gekke creaties in Tokyo is misschien wel deze Nissan Intima. Het designthema was ‘Modern Living’. Vervolgens krijg je een interieur waar kosten noch moeite gespaard zijn gebleven, waardoor alles er inderdaad behoorlijk modern, strak en esthetisch gelikt uit ziet. Meest opvallend zijn nog wel de voorstoelen die in een hoek van 80 graden kunnen draaien om een betere in- en uitstap mogelijk te kunnen maken. Of dit wellicht een voorbode is van een grotere en luxe Nissan? Ik denk het eerlijk gezegd van niet. Tenslotte heeft Nissan luxedivisie Infiniti waarbij ze grote en luxe slagschepen kunnen ontwikkelen. Bovendien was de Nissan Maxima in Europa ook geen onverdeeld succes.

H

et laatste conceptmodel van Nissan is de NV200, we hadden ‘em al verwacht De conceptcar is bedoeld voor zeer drukke ’small business professionals’. Hierbij was het uiterlijk duidelijk van ondergeschikt belang, want dit lijkt nog het meest op een sportievere en kleiner uitgevallen variant van de Renault Trafic. In de auto, daar gaat het bij de NV200 om. In de binnenruimte kun je rustig verder gaan met je dagelijkse werkzaamheden. Van speciale opbergkast voor specifieke doeleinden tot een computer workstation om naast werken af en toe ook nog Autoblog in de gaten te kunnen houden; het is allemaal ingebouwd. Deze versie van de NV200 is bijvoorbeeld bedoeld voor een professionele ‘oceanenfotograaf’ met al z’n spulletjes. Leuk, maar doe mij toch maar een chique Quattroporte of Bentley Brooklands (voor als het wat meer mag kosten) als dienstauto. Lijkt mij ook wel genoeg ruimte hebben om dat oceanenpak en wat fotocamera’s in op te bergen

Nissan Forum concept

A

fter Nissan teased us with the sketches of the Forum concept in November and December, the firm has finally released official images of the ‘exploratory design concept’ developed by Nissan Design America in La Jolla, CA. It will be unveiled at the NAIAS in January. Inside, the Forum is fitted with leather-appointed pedestal-style front seats and a cockpit area surrounded by wood and aluminum. A ‘floating’ IP design blends communications technology with simple controls and includes mood lighting under the upper and lower console areas. A built-in console-mounted microwave, sized to fit a bag of microwave popcorn, is accessible from the front and center seats. The ‘turntable’ 2nd row motorized bucket seats rotate 90 degrees or 180 degrees and include individual wireless monitors in the seat console for watching DVDs or playing games. Nissan has released a sketch of the Forum, a concept vehicle the firm will unveil at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Created at Nissan Design America, the Forum concept offers innovations such as trackless sliding doors and no B-pillars. It is said to ‘explore the next generation of family transportation’. While we’re not exactly sure what that entails, it’s probably safe to assume that the concept will feature some of the styling cues seen on the company’s concept cars unveiled in Tokyo. We’ll keep you updated in our Detroit Auto Show Highlights once we’ve seen it in the metal. An interior sketch, depicting the flowing instrument panel of the new Forum concept, has just been released by Nissan. The minivan’s cabin, Nissan claims, will host an array of communications systems including an advanced Bose Media System with proximity sensor-based information controller and a one-button audio muting system. The technology laden interior will also feature monitoring cameras for the second and third rows,
