Commissioned almost 2,000 years ago, the Ponte Vecchio is Florence's most famous bridge. Hadrian, the Emperor of the Roman Empire, envisioned it as a solution to connect the entire city of Florence by spanning the length of the Arno river. In 2001, my husband, Lonnie, and I visited Italy for the first time with our children. During that trip, my youngest son, Robert, sketched the Ponte Vecchio from our hotel room window. Although he was he was only 9 years old at the time, it was the first time I recognized how strong his gift for design was. Today, he's a member of our Design team.

Life is beautiful in Florence, Italy

With only 70,000 residents, Florence is significantly smaller than Italy's major cities, Milan and Rome, and it does not have the same international recognition that draws tourists to Venice and Sicily. Despite that, Florence has its own unique kind of magic. This enchanting city in Northern Italy stole my heart the first time I visited it and has always remained one of my favorite places in the world. It became even more special when I got to return with my children for the first time.

Despite its small size, Florence has played an outsized role throughout history as a haven for artists, scientists, and free-thinkers. It was the birthplace of the Renaissance, and still remains the place where you can find more artwork by Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo than anywhere else in the world. The city's energy is magnetic, and has been for centuries; no matter where you look, you can always find beauty. Florence is dynamic, endearing, and irresistible, which is why there's no surprise that its entire city center is one of very few UNESCO World Heritage sites worldwide.

La Vida Bella: Firenze

Galleria Degli Uffizi

The Uffizi Gallery is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Tuscany. Originally commissioned in 1560 to house government officials, it later became a museum and opened to visitors in 1765. Along with Rome's Vatican Museum, the Uffizi is one of the two most visited museums in Italy. It holds the world’s most important collection of Renaissance art (including the The Birth of Venus, La Primavera by Botticelli, Bacchus by Caravaggio, and Doni Tondo by Michelangelo). Some travel advice: try to visit later in the day to help avoid crowds. www.uffizi.it

Il Duomo

One of Florence’s most popular sites is Il Duomo ('the cathedral'). Construction on this building began in 1296; today, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that covers the city of Florence. Filippo Brunelleschi (the father of Renaissance architecture) engineered the building's famous dome, which remains the largest brick dome ever constructed. It's best highlight is the view from the top where you can get a panoramic look at Florence's iconic tiled rooftops.

Sailing The Tuscan Coast

Tuscany has a long coastline with plenty of variety. You can choose to visit a ‘bagno‘ in Versilia in the North, the glitzy resorts of Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, or the tranquil shores of Tirrenia and Marina di Pisa. The furtherer South you go, the clearer the water becomes. For true sea lovers, there’s no better place than the Maremma; it boasts beautifully clear water, incredible sunsets, and the Uccellina Park nature reserve. The best time to visit is during the Summer months, anytime from June to September.

Insalata di Panzanella

Panzanella is a classic Tuscan bread salad. Made with ripe tomatoes, rustic Italian bread, and a tangy vinaigrette dressing, this is the perfect summertime dish. By toasting the bread in the oven, you can add an additional touch of texture to this easy, go-to recipe.

From Florence to Rome, there are endless variations of this salad. However, almost all Italians do agree on one thing: using hefty day-old country bread is a must. Prepared the traditional way, this salad always starts with stale bread that's soaked in water for about 15 minutes or so, then wrung out and cut up or crumbled by hand to be tossed with vegetables.

What You Need

5 ounces or half a loaf of rustic Italian bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

– Extra virgin olive oil –

Kosher salt

2 ¼ pounds ripe tomatoes, cut into small wedges

¼ cup red wine vinegar

2 garlic cloves, minced

– ½ teaspoon of Dijon mustard –

1 teaspoon fresh thyme (optional)

– Black pepper (to taste)

2 small shallots, peeled and thinly sliced

– ½ cup fresh basil, finely torn

4 ounces fresh baby mozzarella cheese (optional)

Tips

Cut the bread into cubes ahead of time and leave it out to dry for a few hours. While it may be easy to skip toasting the bread, don't skip this step. It only takes a few minutes in the oven; this makes a big difference in texture and helps keep the salad from becoming too soggy.

You can always pare down the dressing if you would prefer something simpler. While both extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar are essential, the exact mixture of these two dressings is completely up to you.

Directions

– Heat your oven to 400 degrees Farenheit.

In a large mixing bowl, combine bread cubes with a generous drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and kosher salt. Toss to ensure bread is well coated. Spread the bread cubes on a sheet pan and bake in a heated oven for 10 minutes or until golden (the edges should be crisp while the bread remains chewy).

– Place a large colander over the same mixing bowl. Put the tomatoes in the colander and sprinkle with kosher salt. Toss briefly. Set aside for a few minutes to allow tomatoes to release their juices in the bowl.

Move the colander with tomatoes aside. Use the mixing bowl with the tomato juice to prep the dressing. Add red wine, ½ cup extra virgin olive oil, garlic cloves, Dijon mustard, thyme, and a pinch of black pepper. Whisk to combine.

Add tomatoes, bread cubes, shallots, basil and mozzarella (if using) to the mixing bowl and toss to coat with the dressing. Allow the salad to sit for 20 to 30 minutes before serving.

– Toss and transfer to a serving platter. Garnish with basil leaves and enjoy.
