Project Title /

Media Center

Overview / Media center is situated in Moscow on the territory of VDNKh (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy), huge exhibition with the pavillions from the times of USSR flourishing. Since that time requirements to exhibition spaces changed a lot and this change can be seen by the contrast of program and appearance of the media center to soviet pavillions. It contains open exhibition spaces, like temporary exhibition, audio-video presentation hall, leisure zone, cafes, that are put between closed spaces, such as library, lecture hall and storage. The shell of the media center with its gradual transition from openness to closeness demonstrates this relationship between the inside spaces.

Theatre in Kolomna

Overview / Theatre and cultural center for small Russian town Kolomna is situated on the historical site between the XIX century mansion building and the old Russian baths. New center connects all the existing buildings together and fills them with the new functions. At the same time its new landscape “roof provide picturesque views to the historical center of the town. The auditorium of the theatre is made in the Russian baths building. It is transformable, so it can be used either in performance mode or in gallery mode.

One of the challenging parts of the project was to find some effective ways of working with its landscape geometry. New instrument, which was made for this purpose, interprets the form of “hill” as part of 3D sinusoid. With its help it became possible to work with the “hill” geometry, controlled by its center, radius and rise.

Another goal of this design was the reconstruction and expansion of the old Russian baths building. Its new roof design allows to get as much solar enegry as possible in a given size container taking into account the shading from surrounding buildings. To minimize the amount of computer’s calculations during the roof’s form generation there were used the evolutionary algorithms, and after the about 5000 calculations it stops on the fittest form with the result of 410 000 kW*h annually.

Project Title /

Solar Parking

Overview / Solar parking is situated on Moscow Garden Ring-Road (Sadovoye Koltso) and serves as incentive parking for the transport stream to the city center. It is oriented with its longest side facing South to maximize the amount of enegry that is recieved by the shell of photovoltaic elements. The openness and closeness of the street elevation depends on requirements of light transmission for the inside spaces and achieved by the various thickness of photovoltaic elements.

Summer School Pavillion

Overview / Conditions of competition for “Project Russia” architectural magazine’s pavillion allocated the situation in Museon park near the Central Artist’s House in the center of Moscow. According to the task pavillion must have had an ability to be used for lectures, presentations, round tables, workshops and exhbitions. Its budget must have not exceeded 33 000 $. So the main aim of this design was to accomodate all the functions in the most modest way.

The task of competion restricts the maximum area of pavillion to 100 m2 on site with area of 625 m2. So there was made the decision to divide the pavillion into two movable parts and one stable to use the site effectively.

The ability to move the parts of the pavillion is used to form different spaces, which suit the different functions in the most appropriate way.

Social Housing in Kolomna

Overview / Masterplan for the industrial district in Kolomna, town in Moscow region, aims to accomodate new housing and working places. The existing district is split into the parts by the old industrial railway, which is not used now. Instead off splitting we propose reconnecting all the parts of the distict by converting this railway into public space and using it as road for ecological public transport. For the one block of the new masterplan there was designed a collective housing complex. All parts of building are oriented in such way which provides the better views to the park and green zones and fulfils the requirements of insolation.

School Renovation in Kuzminki

Overview / This project is renovation and extension of Moscow typical school design, which was build in Soviet era. This particular example is situated in Kuzminki district on the outskirts of Moscow. The project provides new classes (even for guide-by-side teaching model as opposite to sage-onthe-stage model), new sport areas, and separate access to the building for the evening studies. One of the project aims was to integrate energy-efficient considerations into its design, and reduce the energy consumption for heating and ventilation by providing efficient cooling of the building in summer period and holding the heat in winter period with its double facade structure.

Former school building is covered by a second facade made of ETFE foil. The double skin facade opens differently depending on wind direction and air temperature. This system was tested in ANSYS Fluent and showed desired results. The old building is extended to the West with evening classes part, and to the East with primary school.

Skolkovo Housing District

Overview / This is the project for the competition for a Technopark district of Skolkovo, Moscow Innovative Center. Its aim was to choose the architects who will develop there different types of housing. This particular project is made for the collective housing type. The principle of the given district was based on the contrast relationship between the functional strictness of the Technopark and a certain flexibility of the urban organization of the housing. The housing must have been organized in the circles subscribed in the landscape treated in a natural way. The most challenging part was to deisgn the buildings that are not too close to each other, but at the same fulfil requirments of extra high density (FAR 3.0) and limitation of height (26 m).

Project on Architectural Theory

Overview / This personal project is mostly affected by the current situation in Russian architectural discourse, where there’s a lack of information about contemporary acrhitectural theory. It includes a very different range of activities: translating into Russian some important texts of past and present architectural theory, that are not easy to read or not easy to get; organizing a discussion club in MArhI; creating a database of architectural texts and links to its translations into Russian from diffenerent sources; and blogging.

Photography

Overview / For several years I worked on a team, which created several series of photography. “Static/Dymamic Series” (right column) explores different way on how to look at everyday reality. It was exhibited for a month in one of Moscow’s galleries. The other successful series called “Series III” (left column) focuses on a world without gravity force. All the photographs from these series were made without photomontage.
