Tell us about your artistic work: why you do it what do you want to express, if you have a a precise style and a specific technique or you changes in each project..
In my view, we are the architects of our own psychological spaces. We design the spaces subconsciously, and we are also the residents in our spaces as well as in reality. Sometimes, we get trapped in our own mental spaceacquiescing the repetitive anxious behaviors become our daily routine, like brush teeth, drink water… We look for the exit sign to lead the way out to a haven. As a maker, I create small-scaled sculptural objects with clay and mechanical apparatus —these are metaphorical devices for me, providing form and access to reflect my inner world. In my both sculptural and performance work, I invite the viewers to experience and feel the fragility and vulnerability from my own anxiety and inner fear, as well as to reflect upon their own inner struggles. At the same time, I see my work as self-reflection, and self-realization as well as a means for healing.

Within which mood of art you place your artwork? I am not sure if there is a specific one, my work contains so much personal emotions, feelings, fears..It’s always being a such struggle for me to decide to hide or expose them onto my work— between folding and unfolding a paper plane... Could you tell us something about the art in your country? Is there an active artistic community? Are you part of it? I started my artist journey since I studied in the United States..So I didn’t know much about any active artistic community back in China unfortunately..But I would love to learn more about the contemporary artistic communities in China when next time I visit home. What’s a typical day in YOUR xi nan life? I am currently a night owl ( want to switch an early bird some time soon), so I usually like to spend my studio time during pm time. I usually run errands and play with my cats (sometimes I walk him outside) for a while in the morning. And go to my studio in the afternoon until 10pm to do my work. Doing some grocery shopping on my way home and I cook around midnight for next day lunch/dinner boxes. Writing down some thoughts and keep journal before go to bed. Traveling for art, for example for personal exhibitions or for other art exhibitions you want to see? Do you like to see others’ art? Yes, definitely! I love to travel to see others artwork and exhibitions whenever I get an opportunity to. Especially for installation artwork and performance artwork, I want to go and experience it/them personally. Where are your favorite places or themes where you can find inspiration for your work? Many of my inspirations are from my own personal experience; I also love to look through other artists’ work on IG. Have you studied art or are you self-taught? I majored in studio art since my undergrad; and continued with ceramics for Master of Fine Arts during my grad school. Do you remember the first artistic work you did? I made a wearable art piece by crashed eggshells. What do you think about social networks and the web about art and artists? I do think the social network such as Instagram is a great platform for artists especially. It’s easy to access and everyone can get to see your artwork, and follow your social life (IG Stories). We can create our own style portfolio for feeds as well as showing the behind scenes and life updates on IG. We also can communicate and make friends over social network, leave feedback for your work, and connect for collaborations and opportunities. Website is still very important although I don’t think it is as active as IG nowadays, it can give more informative content and presenting styles for the artists than IG.
Could you talk to us about the idea of your project? I have been working on a new series— performance art hybrids with (wearable) sculptures in both installation and video format such as my work Routine 1 & Routine 2, images Routine 1: https://vimeo.com/313651445/572b573e8a Routine 2: https://vimeo.com/313617541/8301643069 This series of work is my new direction as a performance artist, by recording, examing, journaling my personal experience of my inner struggles/anxiousness and studying for human behavior—it’s a journey of a healing process rather than a documentary of a personal inner struggles/pain Here I attached another example of this project: obsessive behavior.

You have organized exhibitions in the past. How does it feel to involve others in your art? I am very honored to work with other artists for group exhibitions and collaboration together. I love and enjoy the positive energy throughout the teamwork. I really appreciated other artists’ feedback of my work, and it’s always a great way to add fresh perspectives in to my art. What is your favorite artwork? It’s very hard for me to choose just one artwork. But I will choose Zimoun’s sounds installation work If you could show off your artwork anywhere in the world, where would you choose? I would like to choose Shanghai or Beijing (China)— since started my artistic journey and built up my artist career mainly in the US, I would like to have a chance to present my work back to my home country. Are you reading a book at the moment? There is one book you have on your reading list? Not at this moment, but I would like to read Crushing It by Gary Vaynerchuck- next one on my reading list Is there a famous contemporary artist that you want to report? And an artist who is not famous but who you like and whose artistic research do you share? Zimoun, famous for his sounds/kinetic sculpture/installation artist And an artist who is not famous but who you like and whose artistic research do you share? Shingo Furukawa, http://www.bristolcc.edu/gallery/Archives/StructuresAndMachines.html “Born and raised in Japan, Furukawa received a BFA from the University of Oregon and an MFA in jewelry and metals from UMASS Dartmouth. Currently he is the studio technician for UMASS Dartmouth’s College of Visual and Performing Arts. A metalsmith, machinist, and sculptor he creates works that are at once complex and minimal. An examination of his work may expose elaborate structures, a feast for the mind, and once deciphered, reveal a simple or delicate activity. They are delightful, toy–like, and satisfying to encounter.” Shingo is a friend of mine, who I admired as an amazing artist. I always enjoy to watch and observe his kinetic/mechanic sculpture.

You have been contacted by No Name Collective Gallery and did not know what kind of project we would have made: are you happy to trust us? Yes, I had been contacted through IG, and I did go through NNG page/feeds to see what kind of work/magazines you have done; pretty impressed by your content and do think it’s a great opportunity to apply for, so I did. We ask for a small fee for the selection of the magazine and our other calls (artistic residencies and art clashes) but for the artists, we have selected and which we will select every year then we work for free. What do you think about this thing? Small fee is reasonable for application. Both artists and art related organizations needs funds and support for each growth. I truly appreciated your organization creating and organizing this great platform to help emerging artists to increase our visibility internationally; it’s a tremendous help for us, especially you have been doing this for free XI NAN IG: @bingbingbun Website: nanxiart.com Press/Publication: Interview with The Four Wood online magazine: https://thefourwood.com/arthoc-xi-nan-slip-floating/ US National Juried Exhibition for Emerging Artist with Disabilities at Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC. https:// www.si.edu/Exhibitions/Momentum-ANational-Juried-Exhibition-for-EmergingArtists-with-DisabilitiesAges-16-25-4733 The Kennedy Center: http://www.kennedycenter.org/Artist/A7916

THE SECRET ROOM Contemporary Art and Electronic Music Project curated by Celinè Flamboyant Virtual exhibitions in the virtual world we are creating for artists.
For this first exhibition of 2021, with your help, I have selected three women. Each of them tells a different artistic world. Debora Barnaba, tells with self-portraits her pregnancy and the transformation of the female body during this divine condition, revealing the confusion and the conflicting sensations that all women live in this era. Suzanne Lastrina offers us her fantastic worlds and once again we talk with her about transformation and interpretation. Her words, signs, moods and creations drag us into a her dream world. Raffaella Stringa with her still lifes leads us to reflect on impermanence and on the present moment, which becomes eternal, in a photograph. Her flowers are on the verge of decay and seem to whisper vital warnings.

Like a piece of paper In this moment of my life (pregnancy) mostly at the beginning, I felt very fragile. I looked at myself as a piece of paper: fragile, delicate, easy to break. Concerns, tiredness, hormones, changes, emotions were crushing, bending me. But, as a piece of paper, the more I was feeling bended, the more I started feeling stronger. It’s very difficult to break a folded piece of paper. The more you fold it, the more it becomes strong, as me. In this project there are printed images that are bended on themselves, other that are opened, as I was and I’m feeling. There are also parts of my diary written on a piece of paper that is stretched by some weights. These papers are not broken, they resist and sustain the weights. My invitation is to talk more about pregnancy, about this magic and heroic moment that makes us grow as women and persons. With more reality, and less prejudices.
Debora Barnaba is an artist and photographer, born in Milan in 1985. After studying drawing and painting, she discovered photography, which became her main expression in 2006. Her images express the power of self-portraits, with bodies that are controlled and subverted in favour of the photographic lens. Barnaba’s background can be seen in the detailed, formal construction of the shots and in her effort to aestheticise an idea, “tracing” it in the space of a single click. Since 2006 she has worked with renowned practitioners including Giovanni Gastel and Oliviero Toscani, participated in gr up and solo exhibitions and won numerous awards.

I am a self taught artist, constantly on the journey trying to fulfill my growing passion to express myself. Sometimes I find it easy and fluent and the landscapes are beautiful and giving. Sometimes I end-up in a desert struggling to find my way back. I find my inspiration in the beautiful nature that is surrounding us and in the ancient places with the stories that have formed the world we are living in. From collage to something else
Attempt to avoid using the collage technique to create structures, but using more and more paint to achieve additional organic expression. Transition from paper to canvas
Wanted to be able to achieve improved results mixing canvas and paper. It has been a difficult process to limit the use of collage technique, and I have been very much constrained by this difficulty. Paint
only
I am now using only paint on canvas, where I try to reproduce the natural surfaces I find interesting and beautiful, as in ancient buildings, fossils and nature.

I was born in Tortona 53 years ago . After graduating in Law I decided to take care of the historic family shop, where I literally grew up finding myself just below the house. La Bottega d’Arte Stringa, as my grandfather had called it back in 1924, is a place out of time when you travel through precious silver, carpets, antique prints and precious crystals. A place where you get used to the beauty practicing it every day, touching it and feeling its scent. What I love about photography is its fragility and absoluteness: it is like a flower that embellishes my days in a light and passing, yetsolemn way. Photographing has enriched my life, making it more intense and complete. I like exploring new themes, stopping unexpected glimpses, investigating new points of view with my mind and eyes. It’s like magic to understand a small portion of reality and at the same time find a part of myself in things. It is a profound emotion, fugitive and engaging, that takes up space and consistency, and so can also be offered to other looks. This is for me to photograph, the possibility to touch and fix an instant. .
Support this project: We want to invite you to support this artist Bruna Ginammi Collective 18 Here is her call and her link where you can help: In February 2019 accompanying a friend who needed help with documents I had the opportunity to enter the camp in Rosarno where he had fled because of a fire. At the entrance of the camp there was surveillance, inside the African people were not happy to see their social status photographed. I carefully photographed the houses built by the African fruit pickers in Rosarno, Reggio Calabria. They were in a camp provided by their employers, without any form of assistance, shelter or services. The concept that ran through my work tells how African architecture finds in its own tradition a great ability to adapt, especially in adverse environmental conditions, while maintaining originality, creativity and above all great dignity. The guiding thought is the concept of balance which, far from aesthetic logic, is in harmony with an intimate coherent order, a harmonious unity of the parts which, it seems to me, is the best response to an evidently inhuman condition in which it exists . With my work I have focused my attention on forms, fragile equals, which in repetition have built a strong sturrura. What interests me is to show the dignity of the human being that prevails even in adverse circumstances. Despina Kilakou is a young Greek artist, she is part of the Collective 18. She very often sends us updates on her work and as a magazine we want to give maximum visibility to the artists who enter our collectives. So this month I decided to dedicate the Special Guest space to Despina and her creations. Sculptures to wear, sculptures for performances, simply sculptures to collect. All of Despina’s artworks are linked to a concept and this artwork speaks of a changing world and of connection with a very deep part of our unconscious. Despina asks us if we are willing to accept the changes in the near future ... reflection that I find in many artists at this time. Vanessa
Nude Perplexities In A Dark Universe In a data laden and system world what is the future beyond our planet? Which are the deeper connections with our universe and other individuals? The answers can never be clear but we are finding ways to connect with our spiritual core, think through our senses and feel with our heart. This collection works as a puzzling surface, that invites you to observe more with the senses than with the logic. Many visual aspects in an invisible network to which we are all unconsciously connected. An internal journey of uncertainty and faith in timeless values that are constantly redefined. How quickly can you finally adapt to an everlasting changing universe?
