NOONDAY COLLECTION USES FASHION TO CREATE

ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY FOR THE VULNERABLE

style your friends {change the world } Noonday Collection’s first trunk show was hosted by founder Jessica Honegger in her home as a means to raise money for her Rwandan son’s adoption. The style and purpose of the products drew an overwhelming response, and the business quickly grew beyond a fundraiser (and her head is still spinning). Jessica soon partnered up with another socially minded friend, Travis Wilson. Both Travis and Jessica spent years living in resource poor areas of the world and both dreamed of starting a business that would alleviate poverty through entrepreneurship. Together with the Noonday Ambassadors across the country, we offer you the opportunity to use your purchasing power to create change in the world (while looking really good along the way). Your fashion sense can now restore dignity to abandoned women in Ethiopia, empower communities in Ecuador, and create business opportunities for Ugandans.

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } UGANDA Two years ago, Noonday Collection began purchasing small amounts of necklaces, bracelets, and other items from a talented couple named Jalia and Daniel. Little did we know they were so poor that Daniel had recently sold his leather bound Bible in order to provide for his two children. Now, because of your purchasing power, Jalia and Daniel have a car, their kids are in school, and they are overseeing a thriving jewelry workshop employing 20 other members of their community (and growing!). Each of these artisans comes from a destitute background and each is seeing hope restored to their lives. Making the colorful paper beads for their pieces is quite an intricate process. Paper is hand cut into various lengths and then rolled around a tiny toothpick. Finally, the beads are varnished several times to make them hard and shiny, and then carefully crafted into the accessories you now wear! One of our artisans, Ruth, is resilient and full of joy. She was orphaned at age 6 and sent to be a servant in her oldest step sister’s home. Her step sister died when Ruth was 10, and Ruth became the caretaker of her sister’s three small children. After several years, she left for the city to try and find a new life. Sadly, she met a life of exploitation. Her reality changed when she went to church for the first time and the pastor told Ruth she could come live with their family. This same pastor helped solidify her new job with our Ugandan group.

8

“THERE WAS A TIME WHEN MY ONLY HOPE WAS TO DIE,” RUTH EXPLAINS. “NOW I CAN SEND MONEY BACK TO MY VILLAGE SO MY SIBLINGS CAN ATTEND SCHOOL AND NOT BE EXPLOITED LIKE I WAS.”

DANIEL & JALIA

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } ECUADOR All of our jewelry from Ecuador is created from seeds that are sustainably harvested in the Andean region of Ecuador. Some materials are gathered from the rainforest floor, while others

require a skilled farmer to climb high into the tropical canopy and harvest the ripe pods found there. Through a manual, low energy process, tagua, acai, and pambil seeds are transformed into fashion forward pieces that tell a story of sustainability.

Each bead will naturally have sculptural irregularities, both in color and form, to create a truly one of a kind piece.

After the seeds are transformed into beads, skillful artisans craft them into beautiful bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings.

Noonday Collection, in partnership with the Andean Collection,

offers artisans the opportunity to participate in the global market while inspiring you with access to the elusive world of the rural Andes. Since Noonday began partnering with the Andean

Collection in 2010, lead artisan wages have increased from $1 a

day to $26 a day. True poverty alleviation has already occurred in

many lives, and with your increased support, many more to come! Two of those artisans, Nancy and Carlos, create jewelry in their

home workshop and hope to one day meet the people that buy

their jewelry. The couple looks forward to continued access to the global market in order to save for their children’s education.

16

“IT FILLS US WITH GREAT PRIDE TO KNOW THAT OUR WORK IS APPRECIATED THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO MAKE A LIVING FROM OUR CRAFT.” NANCY & CARLOS

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } ETHIOPIA Just outside of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, looms Mount Entoto. Once home to emperors and monasteries, the sacred mountain now houses a community of over one million Ethiopians with a positive HIV status. They have flocked to the mountain seeking the waters that stream and pool there, which are considered to be holy and healing. However, some have found true healing in a small outreach working on the mountain. This outreach makes sure that those living with HIV are assured access to the life-saving medicines that reverse the course of the disease. By taking the antiretroviral medications, HIV becomes almost undetectable in the bloodstream. The disease does not define these women anymore. Now, the women earn a dignified income by making distinct accessories. Each bead in our Ethiopian collection is created from artillery shells that farmers find in their fields from former war conflicts. Once used as a means of violence and destruction, these shells are melted down by village artisans, made into beads, and given a beautiful new purpose when crafted into the pieces you now wear.

“MY LIFE HAS CHANGED SINCE I STARTED WORKING HERE. BEFORE I USED TO ONLY STAY BY THE HOLY WATER HOPING FOR HEALING. NOW I EARN MY OWN INCOME AND CAN PAY FOR WHATEVER I WANT. I ALSO HAVE STARTED RAISING MY KIDS IN A BETTER CONDITION! I AM TOTALLY HEALTHY, I CAN EAT NUTRITIOUSLY AND TAKE CARE OF MYSELF. MY HOPE IS TO SAVE ENOUGH MONEY SO THAT MY CHILDREN CAN RECEIVE A GOOD EDUCATION.” BURTKAN DAMTE

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } G U AT E M A L A In Guatemala, weaving has long played an integral role for the 25 Mayan people groups living in the country. The highly intricate designs communicate the personal identities, heritage, and ideological beliefs of these groups. Over time, weaving has become a cornerstone in the economic survival of both households and villages in the region. We work with an extensive network of artisans throughout Guatemala. Their expertise allows us to interact with the Guatemalan society and environment in responsible ways. Some of our scarves are made using natural dye making techniques that have a long tradition in the Lago de Atitlan region. Local leaves, flowers, and bark are boiled, their natural colors are extracted, and the yarn is dyed, which results in an entirely organic process. The scarves in our collection are created either from a foot loom or a back strap loom. Often the entire family is involved in the process! Jessica recently visited the family who makes our Nod to Neon scarf and our new Ash and Cloud Scarf. Migual and his children, Alicia, Irmer, and Minor, are all grateful for the work their dad receives through your business!

48

ALICIA, PICTURED HERE WITH HER DAD, MOM, AND JESSICA, RECENTLY SAID, “THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CONTINUING TO WORK WITH MY DAD. IT IS BECAUSE OF THESE ORDERS THAT I AM CONTINUING IN SCHOOL.” WHEN ASKED ABOUT HER DREAMS, THIS BRIGHT 18-YEAR-OLD SAID, “I AM STUDYING TO BE A PRESCHOOL TEACHER SO I CAN WORK WITH SMALL CHILDREN AND KEEP OUR NATIVE LANGUAGE, K’ICHE’, ALIVE.”

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } INDIA There are at least 40 million bonded laborers in India today, despite substantive and clear laws prohibiting this. A person becomes a bonded laborer when their labor is demanded as a means of repayment for a loan and they are trapped into working for very little or no pay, often for seven days a week. Under this system, which is rampant in many of India’s industries, the value of the laborer’s work is invariably greater than the original sum of money borrowed. Noonday Collection partners with many different jewelry making groups in India whose goal is to build long term equitable trading relationships that ensure low-income artisans are truly being helped out of poverty. We envision a future where our artisans are not defined by their pasts or social standing, but by their gifts, talents, and the inner strength that we see them display over and over again. Santosh joined the co-op 2 years ago, and she says life is much easier now than it was before she joined. In fact, it’s hard for her to even talk about what her life was like before. Working with this group has provided her with a sustainable future and hope.

60

SANTOSH LOVES WORKING AT THE CO-OP. SHE SAYS THE BEST PART IS THAT HER GROUP MEMBERS WORK COLLECTIVELY AS A TEAM AND HAVE A GREAT TIME TALKING AND LAUGHING TOGETHER. SHE LOVES THE CAMARADERIE.

WHAT INSPIRES ME

WHAT INSPIRES ME

I’m inspired by stories of lives changed by opportunity and hard work. I love that the beautiful collaboration of talent taking place through Noonday is blessing so many people worldwide.

I am inspired by compassion to help and heal others all over the world; by my family and friends and their support and love; by my daughters and the ambition to be a role model for them; by the customers whose eyes and hearts are opened through the stories of Noonday and by the artisans and their talent.

MY NOONDAY STORY

I started working with Noonday during a very transitional time in life. I was a new stay at home mom, my husband was in a career change, and we were moving to a different state. Noonday has been a true gift from God to me. It has provided for our family and helped me to build community and meet people in a new city. Most of all, it has been a way to live out the passion God has placed in my heart for those living in poverty and for kids without families.

MY NOONDAY STORY

I have always enjoyed all things related to fashion (including shopping) and formerly worked as an Assistant Buyer for a major department store. I have a love for connecting with people and making them feel beautiful. When I learned of Noonday, I felt that this opportunity to merge my passions and utilize my abilities and background was truly an answered prayer.

WHAT INSPIRES ME

MY NOONDAY STORY

I have a huge heart for adoption, and I believe there are many ways to be a part of providing a solution to the orphan crisis. Noonday has allowed me to help families in my local area raise money for their own adoptions. It has also allowed me to help mothers around the world provide for their own families through sustainable employment — simply by selling stunning jewelry and accessories! How beautiful is that?

WHAT INSPIRES ME

All of the amazing customers, hostesses, and artisans that I meet through Noonday who are living out Desmond Tutu’s encouragement to “do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.”

MY NOONDAY STORY

With a background in fashion design and a deep desire to see holistic solutions to poverty, I knew without a doubt I wanted to be a part of Noonday. I love sharing the transformative story behind each piece and offering everyone the chance to be the change they want to see in the world. Each day that I am involved as an Ambassador is another day that I get to reach outside myself, partner with artisans who have become dear to my heart, and style friends (new and old) in fabulous accessories.

I have always been inspired by people who are willing to take a leap of faith to try to make a difference in the lives of others. I was privileged to grow up as a missionary kid and have my parents do just that — take a leap of faith to give up the comforts of our life to travel to Central America, West Africa and Eastern Europe to make a difference in the world, one life at a time.

WHAT INSPIRES ME

WHAT INSPIRES ME

I’m inspired by those who care for the least of these, laughter, and finding beauty all around me; and anything turquoise makes my heart skip a beat!

MY NOONDAY STORY

Being an Ambassador has been a blessing in so many ways. It connects me to Ethiopia, the birthplace of my youngest daughter. It is a way for me to connect with women in my community by helping them see the beauty in themselves, and most importantly empowers artisans around the world to embrace their beauty and worth!

Corrie’s faves

I am inspired by women who live their lives boldly to bring hope and opportunity to others, and by individuals who have joy and perseverance in the midst of stark circumstances. I am inspired by Noonday and the power we have to educate women on how their purchase power can change lives in a real and tangible way. I love how Noonday ties me to families across the globe and a community of world changers (Ambassadors) who encourage one another at every turn!

MY NOONDAY STORY

Right out of college, I went to work for an international nonprofit where I learned about holistic and sustainable solutions to poverty. So when I came across Noonday through another adoptive mama, I knew that I had found the right place. Through Noonday, I have been able to work with the poor to reveal their worth in Christ, share their stories through the beautiful pieces they create, and raise funds for the adoption of our Ethiopian son or daughter.

WHAT INSPIRES ME

WHAT INSPIRES ME

I am inspired by people and their stories. When I see our artisans work so hard to overcome their circumstances, and their faith in the midst of injustice, it inspires me. I’ve had the opportunity to meet our artisans in Uganda and their stories have forever changed me.

MY NOONDAY STORY

I hosted a Noonday trunk show to help raise money for our adoption and immediately fell in love with the pieces that I saw. By becoming an Ambassador, I was given the opportunity to advocate for our artisans, all while fashioning women all over Austin. It felt like the job God had created me for. Noonday had a huge hand in helping us adopt our son from Uganda and has given me the chance to be a world changer.

I am inspired by my life verse, 1 Peter 4:10, which tells us to use our gifts to serve others, and by my travels to Africa this past year, where I’ve seen firsthand the need for incomes for hard-working, talented men and women.

MY NOONDAY STORY

I love the opportunity Noonday Collection gives me to go and be an advocate for our artisans and their families. The more I share their stories, the more connected I feel to them, and the more I want to make a difference in their lives. I am so proud to be a part of a company that is making such a lasting impact. Best of all, my work with Noonday Collection is helping me show my daughters what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ and that everyone can make a difference in the war against poverty.

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } RWANDA Jessica founded Noonday Collection as a fundraiser to help bring her and her husband’s son, Jack, home from Rwanda. A friend told Jessica that the majority of poor women in Rwanda have not received an education past sixth grade and that if they have completed secondary, they are still struggling to find work. When Jessica heard of the need so many women have for dignified income opportunities, she and a small team decided to launch a sewing co-op. When we at Noonday let you know that we wanted to send eleven women through school to become seamstresses, you responded by sending in scholarship money for them! They now have an established co-op aptly named Umucyo, which means “Noonday” in the local language--Kinyarwandan. Your continued purchases of these products will enable these women to truly rise out of poverty. Charlotte is the co-op’s go-to girl. By age 17, she had lost both her parents and had to take charge of the family. At 19, she married and had two children, but her husband did not remain faithful to the family and she divorced. She persevered through hard times, and now working with the co-op has allowed her to improve life for herself and her children!

{ H O W I T ’S M A D E } INDIA All of our paper products are handmade in India from

scraps of cotton collected by the local textile industries,

making them both eco-friendly and ethically crafted! The tiny recycled fibers are strained, pressed into paper, and then hung to dry with clothespins. The paper is then

ironed and ready to be transformed into a vibrant journal or piece of stationery by the talented and skilled artisans who make our goods.

As they create these unique paper goods, our artisans continue a craft utilized in India for generations. They

are also able to express themselves creatively as they

thoughtfully embellish each piece, an opportunity that can

be rare for people struggling to survive. The regular income they earn from their work allows them to pursue a better

life for their families. One of our artisans, Zarina, has eight children and her husband rents a bicycle rickshaw for his

work as a bicycle taxi driver. Her contribution from creating these paper products helps pay for renting the rickshaw, and also provides money for her children’s school fees.
